Voters in the Diamondhead East Precinct for County, State and Federal Elections
Due to redistricting and the Diamondhead East precinct becoming too large, this precinct has been split into two precincts. The new Diamondhead Central precinct will vote at the Community Center and the Diamondhead East precinct will now vote in the Emerald 3 ballroom in the Club. All registered voters will receive a new voter card in the mail that will show you which precinct to vote in at the upcoming November 8, 2022, general election. If you have any questions, please contact the Circuit Clerk’s office.
back yard.
club should be driven as if this is a” NoWake” zone similar to the way boats are driven in the harbor. With the increased use of the club area, there are more people and children in that area, and most are not expecting to encounter a fastmoving golf cart.
7) We continue to have a few carts which are driven past the out of bounds markers and onto private property.
Under NO circumstances should a golf cart ever be driven past an out of bounds marker onto private property. Some property owners along the golf courses, but not all, don’t mind a golfer walking into their backyard to retrieve a ball. However, no property owners that I’m aware of approve of driving a cart onto their property or hitting a ball out of their
8) ATVs are not allowed on public streets, or the golf courses, at any time.
FERAL HOGS — aerial gunners, under contract with the POA thru the USDA, have eliminated between 80100 feral hogs in the DH area.
MARINAThe ADA compliant restroom trailer has been installed in the marina.
The trailer has “quick connect” plumbing so that it can be moved in case of storms. Some, but not all, of the materials have been received to construct a new pier. Unfortunately, some of the materials are on backorder. All of these materials were purchased about 1.5 years ago. Supply chain issues are certainly continuing.
If you buy nonethanol fuel for your portable generator, lawnmower, chain
saw, etc., you might want to consider trying ValveTech marine gasoline that’s sold in the marina.
It’s ethanol free and contains additives which increase the life of the fuel which is worthwhile if your fuel goes unused for long periods of time.
YOUTH GOLF TOURNAMENTS — There have been several youth golf tournaments held in DH within the last two months. We’ve had over 125 players from approximately 30 states participate and obviously, their parents visit with the players. The ones, to whom I’ve talked, that were visiting here for the first time were all amazed/ impressed by what’s located in our community. Most had no idea about the extent of our amenities and services.
VOTING PRECIENTS
The Hancock County Clerk of Court contacted
the POA to see if it’s possible for one voting precinct to actually vote in the clubhouse. District 3, for County, State and Federal elections, has voted in the Community Center for as long as I can remember. The population in that area increased enough to require two precincts instead of just one. The POA and Hancock County have agreed to allow a new precinct to vote in The Club.
They require only the use of Emerald 3, the area nearest the stage in the club AND ALL ELECTIONS ARE ON A TUESDAY.
This will start for the November 2022 elections. The Clerk of Court will mail information to each registered voter in District 3.
From the map I’ve seen, the dividing line for precincts in District 3 seems to be Golf Club Drive. If you live on the east side of Golf Club drive, you’ll vote in
The Club.
If you live on the west side, you will continue to vote in the Community Center.
AIRPORT AREA — A new vendor is now handling the airport/airstrip area and is working to increase services there. THE RUNWAY IS NOT A WALKING TRAIL, NOT APPROPRIATE FOR EVENING WALKS, NOT FOR GOLF CART TRAFFIC OR AUTOMOBILE TRANSIT. The airfield is private property owned by the POA. In addition, especially at dusk, NO ONE SHOULD PRESUME THAT A PILOT WILL SEE SOMEONE ON THE RUNWAY. If a pilot is making an emergency landing or having to make a go around, the walker may not even hear an engine.
SUMMARY — ONLY PLANES SHOULD BE ON THE RUNWAY.
DH NEWS — Starting
with the November 2022 edition of the DH News, the paper will be printed and distributed by The Sea Coast Echo.
The monthly paper will be distributed to every mailbox in DH and also mailed to property owners who do not live in DH. This will increase circulation in DH which is worthwhile for the companies that purchase ads.
In addition, the goal is to distribute the paper on the first of every month while having a later deadline for articles which should provide time to include more current information.
As we welcome Fall and look forward to lower temperatures, remember the patio at The Club is a great place to eat, meet and enjoy the company of others.
The Deadline for the November Diamondhead News is October 15th.

Neighbors and Partners

There isn’t a more desirable place to live on the entire Gulf Coast than Diamondhead. One of the most important reasons is that the residents are highly involved in the community. The S.P.C.A. of Diamondhead feels blessed that so many people help us help the animals...whether they are strays, injured animals, or feral cats.
One of our biggest problems over the years has been what to do about all the cats and kittens. Unfortunately, there are people outside of Diamond
head who dump their unwanted animals. We are always scurrying to find homes for them. The Hancock County Animal Shelter
is usually full and overwhelmed by the animals in the rest of the county and more often than not, cannot help us.
So, we are extremely grateful to have been chosen by the new Petsense store to be their partner in Diamondhead. This will enable the SPCA of Diamondhead the opportunity to arrange adoptions for more of the cats in Diamondhead. Petsense is committed to promoting responsible pet ownership.
Petsense is an affiliate of Tractor Supply. They are primarily located in small to medium sized communities. They specialize in providing a large assortment of quality pet food, supplies and services such as grooming and offering customers a tailored experience.
Their operational hours are MondaySaturday 9am8pm and Sunday 10am7pm. They will be offering cat adoption as well as Betta Fish, Tropical Fish, Reptiles, and other small animals. Their plan is to host at least one adoption event at the store every month and take part in as many community events as
possible. Their first event will be their Grand Opening on October 1st.
Lacy Jarrell, the store manager, reports that their Halloween Event will be held on October 15th from 2pm6pm. They will be giving out treat samples for customer’s pets as well as holding a costume contest! They will also have candy for any children participating as well! 10% off Halloween coupons will be given out starting on October 1st that will be good through the end of the month.
Please note: The S.P.C.A. would like to add more foster volunteers. If you or someone you know can foster a few kittens until they are old enough to be spayed/neutered and vaccinated, please let us know. Also, if you know of a

neighbor or friend who must give up their cat for some reason, we can work with Petsense to help us find someone to adopt their adult cat.
Correction notice: In the September SPCA of Diamondhead article stated that Stump & Grind Tree Service was located in Kiln. Vanessa and Mike Benson’s business is located just outside of Diamondhead in Pass Christian, MS.

CHURCHES
The kiddos are in for an exciting treat from our awesome Diamondhead Fire Department, who will be there with their fire truck! We will have wonderful, related stories and crafts as well. Such handson experiences help establish the framework for reading by developing background knowledge, building vocabulary, creating interest, etc. We hope to see you and your little ones there!
The library is starting a longterm program called “Good To Know!”. It is a
series of meetings in six week intervals that will include at least two different guest speakers at each branch. The theme for this cycle is “Health”. The guest speakers and topics for East Hancock are: Tuesday, October 4th Lisa Ladner will present “Medicare 101 Health Insurance New Plans 2023” from 1011; Friday, October 14th at 1:00, Kenny Guess will speak on “Common Sense to Health and Wellness”; Thursday the 20th you can attend the” Medicare
ABCD Educational Workshop” from 10:30 to 11:30.
Though not part of the “Good to Know!” program, A Blue Cross Advantage of MS Info Session will be held at East Hancock from 10 to 11 on October 21.
Crafty Chicks invite you to join them for lively conversation and crafting every Saturday at 10:00! Bring your project and visit with people working on theirs. There’s still time to get in on the mini stocking caps that will adorn this
group’s Christmas tree! Leandra Bekemeyer leads the group.
Elen Black continues her weekly children’s art classes on Thursdays, October 6,13,20, and 27 from 3:30 to 4:30. She leads adult classes on the first and third Mondays, October 3rd and 17th, from 23. All supplies are furnished, and all levels of experience are welcome!
Red beans and rice, anyone?? The library is participating in the CASA Red Beans and Rice Coo
koff on October 22. The event is being held on the Town Green in Diamondhead from 47. The admission price of $10 will get you a taste from each participant and great music from the Dave Mayley Band. Drinks and desserts will be available for purchase. Bring your appetite and come out to support a great cause and the library staff as well!
Please note all libraries will be closed on Monday, October 10 for Columbus Day.
See you at the library!

CLUBS
WINE CLUB
The Diamondhead Wine Club is dedicated to the exploration and enjoyment of wine. At each monthly tasting, we sample at least a 6 different wines and learn a little about their history and origins. The Club is open to any who are interested in enjoying and learning about wine.
Join us at our upcoming tastings:
Thursday, October 13th Bang for the Buck Wines, 7:00 P.M. at the Club Most of us can’t afford a $40 bottle of wine every day. Consequently, we’re always looking for the affordable, but excellent wines to meet our everyday thirst. Sometimes, you may find a
Two Buck Chuck that’s pretty decent. That doesn’t happen often but we’re going to try and find some wines we think drink well above their price point and compare them to similar wines at higher price points. We’ll see how many can identify which of the paired wines is which!
Cost is $40 for DWC members and $50 for guests. Please make your reservations by mailing you check payable to DWC to: P.O. Box 6523,Diamondhead, MS 39525 or by emailing Lou at louertel@aol.com or Marshall at mekygs@mail.com.
Thursday, November 17th Blends versus Varietals 7:00 P.M. at the Club
For a long time, American vintners seemed to produce mostly varietal wines, e.g. Cabernet, Chardonnay, etc. In recent years, blends have become much more popular. We’re going to try some blends and, hopefully, compare them with a varietal from the same AVA and/or winery. We hope to understand the differences and similarities between the two. Something different!
Cost is $40 for DWC members and $50 for guests. Please make your reservations by mailing you check payable to DWC to: P.O. Box 6523,Diamondhead, MS 39525 or by emailing Lou at louertel@aol.com or Marshall at mekygs@mail.com.
Wednesday, December 14th High End Reds 7:00 at the Club Our annual celebration for the Holiday Season featuring a special selection of wines. Details to follow.
DIAMONDHEAD GARDEN CLUB
The Diamondhead Garden Club will be participating in the Fall Festival again this year. Stop by our booth, we are giving away plants and gardening information.
Welcome Fall. The weather is cooling, and we can get back to gardening. It’s time to decide which things you want to prune when the weather gets colder. Remember that some things only bloom on new growth and if you cut that off you won’t get blooms in the Spring. Make plans for the Spring bulbs, what you want to plant and where. Some bulbs need the cold weather so plan to refrigerate them until planting. DON’T put apples in the refrigerator with the bulbs. They produce a gas that prevents the bulbs from growing.
The garden club has been busy, and we had some nice projects last year. Six Cypress trees planted at the duck pond, two new benches in the Maluhia Garden, replacing the post on the Bartram Trail marker, and we continue registering the Oak trees. Look up William Bartram it is an interesting story and if you follow the thread, you will know why we have the marker.
If you or anyone you know has a big Oak tree in their yard and want it measured to see if it is old enough to register the one to contact is Linda Naron at 2163430. Registering a tree does Not prevent you from maintaining it or trimming it if necessary. You will get to name the tree and will have a nice plaque put on it that states the age of the tree. All registered trees are over 100 years old.
The Diamondhead Garden Club’s October meeting will be held on the 19th. Social time at 9:30 am with meeting starting at 10: am. The program will be Christian Stephenson the Hancock County Extension Service Agent. He will cover Fall gardens and turf management.
Make your plans to be at the meeting, bring a friend, all are welcome.

Diamondhead Lions Club August, 2022 Meeting
At our August 19 meeting we inducted Lion Pat Kessler into the Diamondhead Lions Club. Our guest speaker was Hancock County Supervisor Kodie Koenenn. Also, a special guest at this meeting was Diamondhead Mayor Nancy Depreo.
Supervisor Koenen discussed several ongoing projects in Hancock County and upcoming actions. Mayor Depreo commented
on the impact on the city of Diamonhead projects in concert with the county activities.
In the general meeting the current 6 main Global Causes of Lions Clubs International were discussed. These causes are: Vision, Diabetes, Hunger, Childhood Cancer, Environment, and Disaster Relief. These causes are supported by the dues paid by all Lions, contributions by other residents of our local area, and by grants provided by the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF). For Disaster Relief the current emphasis is support of the people of the Ukraine. Support by internal Lions Clubs and other Lions Clubs around the world is providing aid and comfort of the displaced or homeless people of Ukraine.
In addition, the Diamondhead Lions Club supports many local charities and organizations that need the help that we can provide, as well as individuals that need help with eye care or other needs.
Find out more about the Lions Club of Diamondhead. In a future meeting, be our guest at one of our regular club meetings. Our next meeting is Friday, October 21, for Lunch at 11:30 AM in the Diamondhead Country Club. Future meetings are on the Third Friday of each month. KREWE OF DIAMONDHEAD
Touring the World in Diamondhead
The Krewe of Diamondhead recently held their Around the World Theme party and members showed how creative they could be with their costumes. With flight attendants, pilots, explorers, maps, excited travelers, the Statue of Liberty, the big apple and
many more, laughs and excitement carried on through the evening.
The ballroom was decorated to represent many different world locations along with stacks of suitcases that didn’t get lost on these travels. As everyone boarded for a fun evening, they were greeted by a charcuterie tower, drinks and music as they found their tables for the night. There were four food stations to give attendees a taste of the world, which included Jamaica, Mexico, Asia and Italy. The food was outstanding, and no one went home hungry.
The Krewe held a very successful silent auction,
50/50 and raffle drawing, which will go towards their float. Items in the auction had feverishly competitive bidding up until the very end. It was great fun, and some went home with wonderful prizes.
The Krewe was entertained by Black Velvet Duo, who’s music set a great vibe as everyone mingled and then danced the night away celebrating the close of the Around the World Theme. What a way to wrap up a Mardi Gras theme and as a bonus there were no cancel flights!
The Krewe will next host
Racetrack Buffet served from 6:30 until 8:00. Cash Bar in Room. Six exciting races throughout the evening! Be one of thirty Jockey’s for the night. $15 jockey fee plus $25 entry fee. Name your horse and race the tracks to WIN! (First come first served.)
Call Kelly Allen for the form to be a Jockey: 2288062088. This event is open to Krewe members & nonmembers holding prepurchased tickets. See any Krewe member for ticket sales.
Great door prizes are given away after the six races have run. Tickets with your printed name must be presented at the entry door for seating purposes. Tables of up to ten may be reserved in advance. Everyone will have reserved seating! Contact Betty Maxwell 2283631430 for ticket sales and table assignments. The Hancock County Food Pantry is our Charity of choice this year. Please support The Food Pantry by bringing a nonperishable food item the evening of the race.
THANK YOU & SEE YOU AT THE RACES!

GEAUX HIKING
We’re welcoming October’s moderate temperatures and looking forward to the holidays that will follow.
In August we enjoyed two interesting hikes at the Crosby Arboretum in Picayune. The first was a botany field walk led by forest and wildlife biologist Robert Smith, with Wildlife Mississippi, for a walk through the Crosby Arboretum’s plant communities. Did you know that witch hazel is derived from the roots of the witch hazel plant?
We also went mushroom hunting! But not before listening to an indepth introduction to “all things
fungi”, provided by “the best biology teacher in the South”, Dr. Juan Mata, of the University of South Alabama. We hiked… and dug up mushrooms (yes… we had special permission…) and brought them back to Dr. Mata for identification… and confirmation… Eat? Or Don’t Eat?
Our September hikes are ahead of this publication date, so we’ll say more about them later.
We determined our October hikes as:
Thursday, October 13— Return to Fontainebleau… yep, it’s one of our fav’s; plus it gives us an excuse to eat! And we’re gonna try a lil’ something different: breakfast at Crazy Pig Southern Kitchen (Tammy & Johnnie say this place is more than fabulous. Then, while most of us are too full to walk, we’ll try to hike. Leader: Johnny Phillips (yup this was HIS idea…)
Thursday, October 25 & Friday, October 26 OVER
We’re also planning a November 10 hike to Red Bluff. It will be cooler… and maybe drier…
Keep up with all of our hikes and activities on our DH Geaux Hiking Facebook Page. If you aren’t a member, just ask to join and answer a few easypeasy questions. If you go on a hike you’d like to share with others, post your thoughts (and some photos) there. Let’s Geaux Hiking!
The next Geaux Hiking planning meeting will be Tuesday, October 4, 2022, Kanaka Room, DH Country Club 6:00pm.
DDPIA
The DDPIA will hold their monthly meeting on Thursday October 20 at 10:00 a.m. at The Club at Diamondhead.
Our agenda will include social time, business meeting and our featured speaker Margaret Dutton, author of Diamondhead Transitions and Future. We will have updates on our campaign support efforts for Dr Johnny Dupree, our candidate for Mississippi’s 4th
Congressional District and exciting news regarding our next community service project and future social events. Consider spending your morning with welcoming, inclusive, community minded citizens. Lunch is available for purchase following the meeting.
DIAMONDHEAD P.E.O. CHAPTER U

Event cochairs, Kim Koppman and Karla Perry, say the bazaar will offer a wide variety of handmade items, baked goods, crafts, plants, and more.
“There will be lots of gift ideas, Mardi Gras fare, and oneofakind finds,” says Koppman. “We invite everyone out to do their Christmas and holiday shopping!”

VFW POST 2882 September 7th, 2022
Tom Warren and his wife decided to donate their Ceremonial Bugle to the Diamondhead VFW Post 2880 in memory of all those heroes who served and didn’t make it home.
Tom being an Army and Air Force Veteran from the Viet Nam era lost several friends in the conflict and wished to honor them with this donation.
The bugle has already been used twice presenting TAPS for two fallen heroes of Post 2880 and will sound again on November 5th in the upcoming Veterans Day Celebration, here in Diamondhead, honoring those who have served this great nation.
This Bugle is the first step in our post building a formal Color Guard. The Post is recruiting new members every month and is hunting energetic service members, young and old, to fulfill a position in the New Post Color Guard. The Diamondhead VFW Post 2880 meets at The Club at Diamondhead, the first
Wednesday of each month at 6:00PM.
HANCOCK COUNTY REPUBLICAN WOMEN

The club continues to draw speakers from local interests including local elected officials, candidates for public office, statewide elected officials and speakers representing community interests.
HCRWC is open to women throughout the county, guests, and men are often in attendance because of interest in a particular speaker or topic. Men often become associate members. We have several now.
HCRWC meets on the first Thursday of every month at 11:30 for mix and mingle and a Dutch Treat lunch followed by the Speaker for the month and general meeting.

Chris Altese, PGA Director of Golf
We love this time of year for golf on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and Diamondhead! This time of year is hard to beat and we are looking forward to everyone getting back out on the golf course to enjoy the game, outdoors, socializing with old friends, and meeting new friends. Golf in Diamondhead is great in so many ways. Don't forget, booking online at www.theclubatdiamondhead.com is the fastest and easiest way to book tee times!
As I write this article our MemberMember is taking place and so far its shows to be a huge success. 46 teams participated this year which included 6 ladies’ teams. Thank you to all that participated and congratulations to each of our winners.
Residents, please refrain from traveling the golf course during operating hours. This is to ensure your safety and our golfing guests' pleasure. Please only use the golf cart paths briefly to cut through to an adjacent side street. Those of you coming to the clubhouse to check in for golf or to enjoy a meal or beverage should also use the side streets for traveling during the day instead of using the golf cart paths. Hours of operation for the golf course are sunrise to dark 7 days per week. We appre
ciate you using this good golf etiquette and abiding by the rules set in place relating to golf cart travel around our community.
By now our golfers know that the greenside “No Cart” markers are no longer on the golf course. We continue to promote the “Scatter” rule which helps reduce the turf damage from excessive wear from carts using the exact same entry and exit points. We must still all protect our golf course. Even without these “No Cart” markers we must keep all golf carts a minimum of 30 yards from the green.
Speaking of golf carts, most of us know not to drive golf carts outside the boundaries of the golf course. Our golf course neighbors would appreciate
us not entering their private property and especially not driving our golf carts on their private property. If you see anyone on the course that may need a refresher on this rule of golf course etiquette, please let us know.
The golf shop is receiv
ing new items regularly and holiday shopping is just around the corner. Please stop by and check out our inventory. We might just have something you are looking for. Diamondhead Property Owners should take advantage of their discounts on all regularly
priced apparel in the golf shop.
Please be sure to fix two ball marks and fill two divots every hole...any two will do! It's your golf course so let’s all take care of it!
We look forward to seeing you "PLAY MORE GOLF.”

DWGAN Golfing News from August of 2022
By Shirley Halterman
Just like last month, our first Tuesday of August was rained out. Bummer! Everyone one was set to play when, just as we were to tee off, the heavens opened and that ended that round of golf.
We fared a bit better during the next two Tuesdays, August 9th and the 18th, as we held our Electic Tournament. Fourteen of our ladies signed up for this competition and six more because they could not play both days followed the field. The format for this tournament is that you play the first Tuesday and record your scores. The next Tuesday you play the same nine holes and record those scores. Then the best score for each hole on each of the days is the one that is recorded. Our winners this
year were as follows: First Flight = 1st Place, Georgeann Luxion and 2nd Place, Therese Mauterer. In the Second Flight = 1st
DMGA
By Gene deMedicis
The weather was the hot topic for the month of August as rain continued to plague Diamondhead. The competitions scheduled for August 10 and August 24 were both canceled due to rain. On a positive note the DMGA continued to add new members to its ranks.
In the Mixed Bag competition on August 17 the team of Whitey LeJeune,
Byron Gandy, Val Miller and Al Mast won with a score of minus 19. Second place went to the team of Renny Pangan, Berni Breen, Ronnie Austin and Jim Shoemaker with a score of minus 18. In third place was the team of George Thibodeaux, Marc Beddoe and Marshall Brown with a score of minus 17. Two teams tied for fourth place with a score of minus 15.
Ron Davis, Bill Blackwood,
Place, Margaret Sherwood and 2nd Place, Shirley Halterman. The Third Flight winners were 1st Place = Kim Knight and 2nd Place,
Dinah Knobloch. In addition, Kim Knight, in round two, scored a ChipIn on the third hole.
On Tuesday, August
23rd, 18 gals started out with good intentions only to be, once again, rained out. Thus, is typical summer weather in the south of
Mississippi. There is always next week.
A scramble was scheduled for the last Tuesday of the month. Low and behold, we actually got to play this round of golf. The Low Team Gross First Place Team was comprised of Brigitte Becker, Kim Knight, Therese Mauterer and Mary Mizell. In Second Place was the team of Pattie Blackwood, Toni Rossol, Judy Tauzin and a ghost player. And finally, in Third Place, in a scorecard playoff, the team of Margie James, Dolores Louvier, Janice Murray and Pat VanDervort. Margie James had a Birdie on Hole #4.
So, until next month, as we continue to battle the elements just to play our favorite game, hit those drives long and straight and keep dropping those long putts.
Lenny Alphonso and Bill Merna tied with the team of Norman Bowley, John McLaughlin, Erie Hebert and Pat Jarrell. Bill Merna won low individual with a net score of 65.
Closest to the pins were won by Berni Breen, Marion Rotolo and Don Crosby who won two pins. Closest shot of the day was Berni Breen at 2’11”.
The format for the game on August 31 was ABCD Two Best Ball. Capturing first place was the team of Tom Garriga, Mike Sheffield, John Bunce and John Speed with a score of 19
under par. In second place was the team of Norman Bowley, Larry Osburn, Chuck Ingraham and Al Mast with a score of 15 under. Two teams tied for third place with a score of 14 under. The team of Jan Vest, Renny Pangan, Ronnie Austin and Dennis Tauzin tied with Billy Stroud, Byron Gandy, Tony Holt and AJ Dilley. In fifth place was the team of Tom Amedee, Berni Breen, Art Burgoyne and Ernie Knobloch with a score of 13 under.
Closest to the pin winners were Billy Stroud, Ernie Knobloch, Norman
Bowley and Tommy Garriga. Billy Stroud had the closest shot of the day at 3’7”.
In the Mixed Bag Competition on September 7 the team of George Thibodeaux, Marion Rotolo, Don Crosby and AJ Dilley won with a score of 14 under par. Two teams tied for second with a score of 11 under. The team of Jan Vest, Gene deMedicis, Ronnie Austin and Dennis Tauzin tied with Norman Bowley, Berni Breen, Tony Holt and Al Mast. Finishing fourth was the team of Charlie Riels, Mike Cavataio, Lenny Al
phonso and Bill Merna with a score of 10 under. In fifth place was the team of Tom Garriga, Dave Barbato, John Bunce and John Speed with a score of 9 under.
Closest to the pin winners were Lennie Crawford, Erie Hebert and Dutch Vandervort who won two pins. Lennie Crawford had the closest shot of the day at 4’9”. Honorable mention goes to Art Burgoyne who had the second closest shot of the day at 4’9 1/2” and was “edged out” by Lennie on hole number 17.
I’ll see you on the course.

In May of this year after the pilot passed out, a passenger took control of a Cessna Caravan, flew to Palm Beach International Airport and landed safely with no prior experience. In 2015, an eighty yearold woman landed the plane after her husband lost consciousness. There have been many similar stories like this over the years. In the General Aviation community, it’s rare to have more than one pilot in the family. Many people love riding in planes but how many are prepared to take the controls in an emergency?
A number of organizations offer “Pinch Hitter” courses which teach basic aircraft control, landing techniques and radio communications. The skills taught in these courses cover many of the same material students learn prior to solo flight. Some graduates of these courses have even gone on to earn their Private Pilot certificate with some moving on to advanced ratings.
Aircraft Control
What makes an airplane fly? Many will say the force that keeps a plane in the air is cash, but aerodynamics helps.
The new student will
learn about lift, and the other forces acting on the aircraft. The focus will not be precise control of altitude and heading but the ability to keep the plane in the air and get it pointed toward an airport. A discussion on stability is important because the chances are high that the aircraft was in stable flight when the emergency happened. A good understanding of how power changes will affect the aircraft is important. As power is reduced, the aircraft will want to descend to maintain the trimmed airspeed.
Changes in aircraft configuration will be introduced so the student understands how changes in flap and landing gear settings will affect the pitch attitude. Some aircraft will exhibit a pitch up tendency while others will pitch down.
Practicing flight at minimum airspeeds is important to allow the student to gain confidence in controlling the aircraft at speeds just above stall. When landing, aircraft will be at these slower speeds so it’s important that the student become proficient at maneuvering at the lower speeds.
One thing that differs from training for pilot certification is you’ll probably be flying in the right seat since that’s where you’d be if an emergency developed requiring you to take control.
Navigation GPS has made naviga
tion so easy. Moving maps show exactly where you are and where the airport is but understanding the equipment is important. If you don’t know how to operate the equipment, it’s useless. Most GPS systems have a Nearest Airport function which will provide a list of nearby airports, the direction and distance from the aircraft. Once the airport is selected, the student must learn how to follow the instrument indications to fly to the airport. Then they must descend, configure the aircraft for landing and land the aircraft.
Communications
It’s surprising how quickly new student pilots begin to feel comfortable with aircraft control but radio communications seems to still be the bigger hurdle. Prior to taking a Pinch Hitter course, spending some time with the Pilot/ Controller Glossary in the Airman’s Information Manual will help. Knowing what air traffic controllers are going to say helps make sense of what is heard on the radio. Time spent with an airband radio also helps.
While riding with your flying friends or family, offer to handle radio duties. The more comfortable you are with radio communications the better. Many people who’ve been flying for years still don’t like talking to air traffic controllers but, in an emergency,
they can be an invaluable resource. Being comfortable with radio communications will help reduce the stress of an already stressful situation.
Building Confidence
While some students will become more confident in their ability to handle the aircraft if the pilot becomes ill, others will decide to continue their training to gain their Private Pilot certificates. In both cases, they’ll know they have the ability to bring the aircraft to a safe landing if the need arises.
If you fly with the same person in the same aircraft, it would help to get the instruction in that particular aircraft so you can become familiar with your particular plane’s characteristics and avionics setup.
Companies like Garmin are designing auto land systems that will fly the aircraft to a safe landing, and also make radio calls. These systems will be great safety backups but nothing beats the ability to fly the aircraft to a safe landing. Considering the cost of those auto land systems, it will be many years before any older aircraft will be retrofitted. Learning how to get that aircraft on the ground yourself is a much cheaper option.

Pilot Technique
A pilot was describing his takeoff in a social media post and what got my attention was when he said, ‘I applied brakes, set full power and 2700 RPM, and waited for about ten seconds going through the checklist again before releasing the brakes…’
Years ago, the flight school where I worked was next to the control tower. I spent many hours just hanging out in the tower cab, watching and listening. I also asked controllers about their likes and dislikes. One of the dislikes was pilots taking too long after being issued a takeoff clearance to start the takeoff roll. Much of a controller’s workload is timing aircraft movement.
If a plane has a ground speed of 90 knots and is five miles from the runway, the controller expects it to reach the runway in just under three and a half minutes.
That’s plenty of time for him to clear another aircraft for takeoff. But if a pilot makes a leisurely stroll to the runway, sets brakes, sets power, reviews the checklist, makes a final check of all instruments and then starts the takeoff roll,
aircraft separation can be greatly reduced. I’ve seen quite a few controllers issue a goaround to aircraft due to this behavior.
A final check of pressures and temperatures as power is applied for takeoff is important, but this check can be done without spending too much time immobile on an active runway.
But what about nontowered airports? No traffic calls have been heard. What’s the rush? Most pilots take great care to point their aircraft in a position that allows them to see the approach path to the runway while doing their runup or they may do a 360 to scan for traffic before entering the runway. With all that care in looking for traffic, why would you want to sit with your back to that same approach path and not be concerned about other traffic? Minimum time on the runway is always good technique.

The Marina at Diamondhead
Ahoy maties, from your Harbor Master Dianne reporting the latest updates from The Marina at Diamondhead.
We are sad to be saying goodbye to Ted South. On September 12, he celebrated his birthday and his retirement! After so many years at the Marina, preceded by time with the Diamondhead POA security department, we hope he will enjoy his muchdeserved retirement! Please don’t be a
stranger.
Welcome aboard to our new 1st Mate Corey Willis. Corey grew up in Diamondhead before heading out to travel the country before
returning home and starting his own family. He has been working parttime with us since August. We are the dynamic duo determined to bring back life to The Marina at Diamondhead!
The excessive rain we’ve seen in August has caused a delay in the new pier construction. Hopefully, we will see it completed in midOctober.
If you need ethanolfree or diesel fuel, stop by the Marina (you don’t even need to be on a boat)! Also, if you need beer or sunscreen, please stop by and see us! If you need to reach us, call 2282166247.
