MINUTES OF THE OPEN MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS DIAMONDHEAD COUNTRY CLUB AND PROPERTY OWNER’S ASSOCIATION, INC. April 18, 2022 A meeting of the Board was held at 5000 Diamondhead Circle, Diamondhead Mississippi.

President Knobloch chaired the meeting and called it to order at 6:00 p.m. Present were President Knobloch, Vice President Gillen, Treasurer Rayner, Secretary Sislow, Director Becker, Director Ertel, Director James, Director Nutting, Director Ramirez, and Director Tauzin. Absent: Ex­Officio Marthouse. Also present were GM Abadie, Counsel Jones, and 14 members.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES – A motion to approve the minutes of the 3/18/22 meeting was made

by Secretary Sislow and seconded by Director Nutting.

The minutes were approved unanimously.

APPROVAL/AMEND MEETING AGENDA – A motion to approve the agenda was made Vice President Gillen and seconded by Director Ertel. The motion was passed unanimously.

PRESENTATIONS – None.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT – President Knobloch provided his report.

COMMITTEE REPORTS – Recreation Committee, Administration Committee, and Safety Committee had no report.

Grounds Committee reported reviewing the status of Twin Lakes and RV Storage making a list of needed repairs.

Airport/Marina Committee reported that the Ships Store trailer is almost complete, old docks removal is complete, obtained additional financial support from DMR for one floating dock; City has loaned Noma Drive restroom to Marina for summer use; diesel pump

The Director Tauzin, Election Chair, reported that there will be a up­coming Election forum for President and Vice­President candidates on 5/23 and a forum for Director forum on 5/24, encouraging all to attend.

Summer and Hurricane season

S.P.C.A. OF DIAMONDHEAD Now that warmer weath­ er is here and Hurricane season, it’s extremely im­ portant for dog owners to take certain precautions when it comes to their pup’s health. To ensure that you and your canine companion have an enjoyable summer, the AKC has compiled a list of cautions to keep in mind this season, so that your furry BFF stays safe.

Car Travel Please keep in mind that every year, dogs die from being left

alone in hot vehicles. A car’s temperature increases about one degree a minute and can reach life­threat­ ening highs quickly, even with the windows open.

Bottom line is, you should NEVER leave a dog alone in the car.

Heat Stroke Any dog can suffer from heat stroke.

It is more of a risk for brachycephalic breeds that have a short nose and flat face, such as Pugs, Boxers, and Bulldogs, who aren’t able to cool themselves as efficiently as other breeds because of airway restric­ tions. Dogs that have had

heat stroke previously, dogs that are obese, and dogs with dark coats are also at higher risk for heat stroke.

Humidity can increase the risk for heat stroke; when it’s humid outside, a dog’s temperature rises. A dog cools off by panting, which causes evaporation of saliva. If the environmental air is full of water, saliva can’t evaporate and cool dogs when they’re panting.

Sunburn You may not realize that dogs can get sunburned. Canines that are hairless, white, or a light color are more sensitive to sun exposure and at risk for

sunburn and sun­induced tumors.

Hot Surfaces If the pavement feels hot when you touch it with your hand, imagine what it feels like on your dog’s paws. If you can’t walk on the ground barefooted, neither should your dog.

This includes hot side­ walks, streets, and sandy beaches. Blisters and cuts are commonly seen on dogs whose owners did not con­ sider or pay attention to the bottom of their feet.

Flea and Tick Care Your dog should be on a flea­and­tick preventive to reduce the risk that he’ll contract tick­borne in­ fections.

Heartworm Since heart­ worm is transmitted to dogs from mosquitos, warm weather season is the most

dangerous time for contact­ ing this parasite. For your dog, heartworms cause inflammation and damage the heart, arteries, and lungs – and can be fatal if left untreated.

BBQ With their keen sense of smell, dogs find the scents at a barbecue or cookout very enticing, but the food served can be dangerous to their health.

Never give your dog a cooked bone, because the bone can splinter when chewed, causing choking and serious injury to your dog.

Swimming Pools Not all dogs can swim. If you plan on taking your dog in the pool, make sure he knows how to swim and how to get out. Pools that do not have some form of stairs are the most danger­

ous for dogs.

Fourth of July The loud noises and sudden flashes of fireworks are frightening and can disorient or startle a dog.

Keep your dog safely inside or under control on a leash when outdoors. Plus, there is a great product available for dogs who are sensitive to loud noises like thunder and fireworks. SILEO is a prescription product used to treat canine noise aversion. It is a gel easily applied to the dog’s gums. It works great!!!

Ask your Vet for it. Che­ wy has it, also.

Hurricane Season As a reminder, all evacuation shelters require proof of current rabies vaccination for animals to be admitted into an evacuation shelter.

The Diamondhead Aviator

Although we have many certificated pilots in our community, there are those who may still be consid­ ering it but haven’t taken their first flight. This month’s article is for you.

ATTAINABLE GOALS When I was very young, my father took me to the airport to let me watch the airplanes. He even opened a few planes up and let me climb in and have my hand at the controls. It wasn’t until many years later that I realized my father didn’t know everyone at the air­

port and that he was just letting his kid climb into any plane that just hap­ pened to be unlocked. Yeah, not stellar parenting skills.

Another area where he could have done better was in motivation. He told me it was very hard to get into a flying career and I should look elsewhere for my fu­ ture. Dad was wrong again.

When I turned twenty­ one, I finally started taking flying lessons. After that first lesson, I was hooked.

What started as extreme interest became a passion in that 1.2 hour flight. After some research, I discovered that a career in aviation was

indeed an attainable goal.

THE SKY IS NOT THE LIMIT The first step in any civilian pilot’s path is the Private Pilot certificate.

Although the Sport Pilot and Recreational Pilot cer­ tificates require less time and money, the limitations of those certificates don’t make them the best choice for most people. Of the nearly half a million certif­ icated pilots in 2021, over 160,000 are Private Pilots.

Other than getting paid for your services, there are very few limitations. There is no limit to how far you can fly.

Some have even flown around the world. Your only practical limits are weather and the type of aircraft you can operate. While many countries require an in­ strument rating for night flying, no such limitation exists in the U.S. Thinking about a road trip? The average single engine aircraft can travel about 130 knots or 150 miles per hour. Your aver­ age endurance is about four hours with full fuel tanks.

With that sort of speed and range, weekend trips are much more enjoyable. A five or six hour drive time

before you know it. Those hours are broken up into certain milestones.

The day no pilot will ever forget is their first solo.

That first takeoff with no­ body else in the aircraft is both scary and exhilarating.

Even though you’ve been flying the aircraft by your­ self up to that point, you still had the reassurance that your instructor was there to assist. The first solo leaves no doubt that you are in command.

After solo, you’ll start building your navigation skills, learning about weath­ er and refining your skill in aircraft control and land­ ings.

Next, it’s time to actually go somewhere.

DH GEAUX HIKING CLUB NEWS Hot! Hot! Hot! Umm… yeah… it’s HOT! But that hasn’t stopped us…

For example, we enjoyed an informative stroll around St. Joseph (Rotten Bayou) Cemetery, led by cemetery caretakers and Juan de Cuevas descendants, Dorty Necaise and Breezy Bice.

Wow! They told us stories of their ancestors who are interred in the cemetery at the end of Kapalama Drive and who were living here long before Diamondhead was founded.

They were bootleggers, heroes, an Indian Princess, and even a Union soldier who introduced indoor plumbing to the area, then known as Fenton (or Cue­ vas Settlement).

A few of us took a trip to Muddy Creek, Alabama; while others stayed nearby, exploring the hiking trail along Rotten Bayou… Yep! You’d swear you were miles deep in the wilds of Mis­ sissippi… but, yet, we were right here… in Diamond­ head! We picked edible blueberries (yum) and got a lesson in how to spot a Kite (that’s a bird) and oops… that was poison ivy you were leaning on… (whoo…boy… rush home, strip off clothes and throw into the washer! Betty broke a land speed record and still made it to lunch!) Thanks to Geaux Hiker Linda LaCour for sharing her deep know­ ledge of birds ‘n plants ‘n trees ‘n flowers ‘n weeds!

Thursday, July 28— Biloxi Museum Tour An indoor/outdoor tour of three venerable Biloxi ven­ ues: Beauvoir, The Jefferson Davis Home and Library; Ohr/O’Keefe Art Museum, and Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum.

We’ll start at Beauvoir, which features not only the home and library, but other buildings plus a cemetery.

Then we’ll travel via autos a short way to the Ohr/ O’Keefe Museum to “appre­ ciate” the work of a “mad potter” (George Ohr) as well as four other buildings and the reconstructed home of enslaved Pleasant Reed.

The site offers visitors experiences which together create a single unified vi­ sion connected by the expansive brick plaza under the majestic Live Oaks.

THE KREWE OF DIAMONDHEAD HOLDS ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING The Krewe of Diamond­ head held their annual membership meeting on Saturday, June 4th at the Lazy Gator Sports Bar and Steamer. Members, both old and new, gathered prior to the meeting being called to order. Members mingled and discussed the last sea­ son and the upcoming sea­ son. Applications were taken and ballots for the election of a new board were submitted to the elec­ tion committee for the official counting.

Held annually on the first weekend in June, the Hawaiian Mixed Couples Invitational had another full field. Golfing couples from all over the region along with our members compet­ ed this year. Each year we host couples’ teams from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, and more for this great event.

The Club at Diamond­ head has been selected by the Mississippi Golf Associ­ ation to host the 2022 Southern Junior Cup on August 1st – 2nd. The Southern Junior Cup Match­ es are a Ryder Cup style match play event where four states meet to compete annually. Mississippi, Mis­ souri, Alabama, and Arkan­ sas have teams of 12 juniors (6 boys and 6 girls) that /square off in Four­Ball, Foursome, and Singles Matches. Four­Ball and Foursome matches are co­ed while the singles matches are male/male and female/female. All matches are worth 1 point and a halved match results in 1/2 a point for each side. Team

The road to Augusta goes through Diamondhead this Summer. Diamondhead continues to grow on the junior golf scene and has been selected by the Gulf States PGA to host the Sub­Regional Champion­ ship Qualifier on Saturday, August 20th, for the 2022­ 2023 Drive, Chip, and Putt Championship. We are excited and proud to be part of this incredible event conducted annually by the Gulf States PGA, USGA, Masters, and the PGA of America. Before we were

one of about 350 local qualifying sites and this year we have been selected as one of only 60 sub­re­ gional qualifying sites.

Other facilities hosting sub­regional qualifying include TPC Sawgrass, Bethpage State Park, Old Marsh Club, Golf Club of Houston, Grandover Resort, Nemacolin Woodlands, Haggin Oaks, SentryWorld, DuPont Country Club, Turning Stone Resort, Can­ tigny Golf, and more.

If you are a new resident of Diamondhead I encour­ age you to join the Dia­ mondhead Men’s Golf Association. We play every Wednesday morning and have a shotgun start at 8:30 AM. Check in before 8 AM to be placed on a team by the pro shop. The joining fee is only $25 and the weekly fee is $5. The join­ ing fee is waived for golfers 80 and above.

In the Low Net All Balls competition on May 11 the team of Norman Bowley, John Benus, Dutch Vander­ vort and Pat Jarrell won with a phenomenal score of 28 under par. Second place went to the team of Gene deMedicis, Lee Kormondy, Erie Hebert and Gary Hava with a score of 25 under par. DWGAN Golfing News from May of 2022

The merry month of May be­ gan on the 3rd with our Annual Scotch Doubles competition. This format is usually played in April but inclement weather caused it to be rescheduled to early May. Twenty­two couples showed up to see who would be the most com­ patible on the Diamondhead golf course. The group retired to one of the Clubs ballrooms to await the results of the competition. The Low Gross 1st Place winning couple with a team score of 92 was Therese and Eddie Mauterer.

In 2nd Place with a team score of 93 were Liz and Charles Bell followed by Betty and Scott Lyons scoring 94. The Low Net winning teams in this competition were: 1st Place with a low net score of 71 ­ Nancy and Tom Sislow. Coming in 2nd Place were Pauline and Mark Singer with a score of 72 and in 3rd Place ­ Jerry and Chuck Ingraham scored 73. This is al­ ways a fun format and a good test of personal relationships.

On the following Tuesday, May 10th, we played a Two­Per­ son Alternate Shot game on the front nine holes of the Cardinal course. In this format the two person teams choose who will tee off on the even or odd numbered holes. After each hole tee off, the other player plays the next shot and shots alternate thereafter.

Awards were given for the first five place teams. The First Place Winning Team was composed of Cathy Gesell and Audrey Rami­ rez. Beryl Laird and Judy Tauzin came in Second Place. Third Place was achieved by Susie Fontenot and Sue Hebert. Fourth Place honors went to the team of Shirley Halterman and Betty Perry. And, finally in Fifth Place the team of

Tuesday, May 17th, found us playing a “Blind Holes” format.

The Blind Hole scores are then deducted from the final score. If you only knew which were the blind holes before playing. The Low Net winners of this event were: 1st Flight ­ Judy Tauzen with a score of 20, Susie Fontenot with 23 and Betty Perry with 24.

The 2nd Flight winners were Pat

VanDervot with 17, Cheryl Saak with 19, and Mary Alice Harfoush with 23. The following were the Third Flight winners Kim Knight scoring 18, Beryl Laird scored 20 and Sylvia Corban scored 22.

Finally in the Fourth Flight the winners were: Cathy Gesell with 18, Delores Louvier with 20, and Carole Griffin with 22.

Beryl Laird had a Birdie on Hole #6 while five of our gals had Chip­Ins: Judi Brannan on Hole

#5, Susie Fontenot on Hole #2, Kathy Jones Aldo on Hole #2, Beryl Laird on #6 and Therese Mauterer on #7. Great job gals!

“Free Throw” was the name of the game on May 24th. This team format allows for each player on the team to, at one point, throw the ball rather than hitting it with a golf club. This is not as easy as you might think. It is actually difficult to throw a golf ball very far and the shot very often is best

used on the green instead of a putt. The First Place winning team was composed of Brigitte Becker, Liz Bell and Sylvia Cor­ ban. In Second Place was the team of Pattie Blackwood, Jeanne Hudgins and Kim Knight. Brigitte Becker had a Chip­In on Hole #9.

on May 18 was Mixed Bag. The winning team was John Lee, John Benus, Bill Black­ wood and Ernie Knobloch with a score of 24 under.

The team of Billy Stroud, Dick Brown and Don Cros­ by took second place with a score of 22 under. In third place, two strokes behind, was the team of Lennie Crawford, Berni Breen, Chuck Ingraham and AJ Dilley. Finishing in fourth place was the team of Gene deMedicis, Dave Barbato, Dennis Laumann and Bob Roth.

ners were Dick Brown, John Lee, Chuck Ingraham and Tom Amedee. Dick Brown had the closest shot of the day at 3’9”.

In the ABCD Points Competition on May 25 two teams tied for first place with a score of minus 3. The team of Gene deMedicis, Bobby Gros, Marc Beddoe and Al Mast tied with the team of Tom Amedee, John McLaughlin, Dick Brown and George Thibodeaux.

Finishing in third place was the team of John Lee, Lee Kormondy, Byron Gandy and Marion Rotolo. Sam Lee, Morrison Wilkins and

Erie Hebert finished fourth.

Closest to the pin win­ ners were Val Miller, Sam Lee, Erie Hebert and Nor­ man Bowley. Val Miller had the closest shot of the day at 3’3”.

The format for the game on June 1 was Peers Points.

Finishing first was the team of Byron Gandy, Don Cros­ by, Berni Breen and Jerry Brock with a score of plus 4.

In second place was the team of Marion Rotolo, John Bunce, John McLaugh­ lin and Dick Brown with a score of plus 1.

Finishing third was the team of Norman Bowley,

Mike Cavataio, Whitey LeJeune and Paul Cain. In fourth place was the team of Morrison Wilkins, Don Perkins, Lee Kormondy and John Benus. Finishing fifth was the team of Ron Davis, Frank Morrow, Renny Pan­ gan and Dave Barbato.

Norman Bowley was the low individual with a net score of 63.

Closest to the pins were won by Al Mast, Lennie Crawford, Dutch Vander­ vort and John Benus. Len­ nie Crawford had the best shot of the day almost holi­ ng his tee shot on number 6. His shot came to rest

Toni Rossol and Judy Tauzin played against Betty Perry and Susie Fontenot with Betty and Susie winning. The next group was made up of Bri­ gitte Becker and Sue Hebert versus Nancy Sislow and Pat VanDervort with Nancy and Pat winning the match.

The fourth competition was between Pauline Singer and Lenna Weisenhorne against Dolores Louvier and Mary Mizell. Dolores and Mary were the victors in this match.

And our final match was between Kim Knight and Dinah Knobloch playing against Pattie Blackwood and Sylvia Corban. The winners in this match were Pattie and Sylvia. Susie Fontenot scored a Birdie on Hole #17 on the Cardinal course.

The format for the com­ petition on June 8 was ABCD Two Best Balls. The team of Gene deMedicis, John McLaughlin, Jerry Brock and Al Mast finished first with a score of minus 19.

Finishing second was the team of Frank Morrow, Lee Kormondy, Erie Hebert and Art Burgoyne with a score of 17 under par. Third place was shared by two teams with an identical score of 16 under par.

tied with the team of Nor­ man Bowley, Marion Roto­ lo, Dutch Vandervort and Ernie Knobloch.

The highlight of the day’s competition was an eagle 2 on hole number 11.

Jerry Brock hit a gap wedge from the fairway into the hole for an eagle.

Closest to the pin win­ ners were Marion Rotolo, Lennie Crawford, John Benus and Gene deMedicis.

Marion Rotolo came close to an ace by hitting his tee shot 1’2” just short of the hole.
