The state of the DHPOA report By Ernie Knobloch DHPOA President
T
he deadline for this article was August 10 so your POA Board will have dealt with additional items by the time you read this. The first Board meeting was an organizational meeting where we decided on the meeting dates for the next two years (the third Monday of the month except for March and October where the Bylaws require a Friday meeting plus the Annual Meeting in June). The monthly business meetings will start at 6 pm and Executive Sessions, if needed, will normally be held after the regular meeting ends. Executive Sessions will only be used to discuss personnel and legal issues. The normal agenda will include a Public Comments section before motions are voted on in public. Members must sign up before the Public Comments section and public comments during this time must be about agenda items This is the time for members to express their comments to the Board before votes are taken on agenda items. All regular business meetings will be open to the members unless Covid-19, or special circumstances, prevents us from having an open meeting. There will be a section later in the meeting where

Seven committees were formed including F&B/ Clubhouse, Golf, Airport & Marina, Recreation, Admin, Future/Covenant Expiration and Grounds Maintenance. About 80 members volunteered to be on a committee and we were able to approve about a total of 30 members to be included in the seven committees. The goal of each committee is to review the area their committee assesses and make suggestions to the Board for improvement in that area. The Board was delighted with the number and abilities of all the applicants. Committee members will be approved at the August 17th meeting. We now have an Organizational Chart which will be displayed during Board meetings. The POA has about 140 employees with approximately 70 of them listed as part-time. Parttime employees include some who work in the F&B area, including special events, and additional help during the grass cutting season. Grass to be cut/ maintained includes about 8.5 miles on the golf courses., the fields at East Rec, the fields at the end of Noma Drive, Twin Lakes, the median on Gex Drive, areas around the duck pond, the RV storage area, the old stable area, the land adjacent to the airstrip etc. The POA has taken a
large financial hit due to Covid19 because of restrictions on events. The Club is used for many events by various entities. The virus restrictions have caused many large events to be cancelled. The previous POA Board applied for an SBA covid-19 loan and was granted the loan. The loan is for $669,000. It’s my understanding that, if the POA kept their employees during the Covid-19-time frame, the loan should be forgiven. The staff has informed me that they have met, and are continuing to meet, all the requirements to have the loan forgiven. The first monthly loan payment of $37,706.69 is due on November 14, 2020, with final monthly payment due on April 14, 2022. The GM and Controller have provided the Board with a detailed explanation of the financials of the POA. The POA Treasurer, along with others, are currently reviewing all the information. We have reviewed the POA’s Disaster Management Plan and made minor changes based upon the new Board members. This written plan involves the steps that must be undertaken before hurricanes approach us, the person responsible for activating the steps, and what to do after a weather event. This plan is to be used in conjunction with the City of Diamondhead and the Hancock County Emergency Operations Center. Communications
with both entities have been completed. Originally the Board was made aware of a potential problem with the fuel tank at the airport. Further inspections show the problem not as bad as was thought. Improvements have/are being made to rectify the situation. The RV park has been remarked, trees trimmed etc. The Facilities Maintenance group has been able to make most of the im-
provements. We are in the process of updating the Policies and Procedures Manual which was provided to us. Some areas need updating since the manual still shows that the POA is responsible for roads, drainage etc. Non-Harassment signs are posted in appropriate areas. The POA seems to be involved with five lawsuits as this article is being written. I cannot comment
on any other specifics at this time. We have a poster that will be displayed at future POA meetings, and one posted in the lobby of the POA offices, which is a map that shows when covenants expire in specific phases and units. Our website is less than optimal, to use a politically correct phrase. We’re looking into updating the website. Several residents have
asked what happens to their property when their covenants expire. The POA would no longer have control over architectural matters. The City of DH would have architectural control thru their ordinances. The next question asked often is what would happen if the City did not exist. If the City did not exist, the Hancock County ordinances would control

The goal of the new ID cards is to give the income producing areas the ability to quickly check whether a member is in good standing. This means that the property owner is up to date in paying dues. This process has not been finalized as of when this article is being written. The budget process for developing the 2021 budget has started. This will be challenging based upon changing covenant situations and Covid-19. Members of the Board met with local real estate brokers to discuss their ideas, thoughts, and concerns. Since the real estate people are usually the first to meet people interested in buying here, it’s appropriate for the POA to work with this group. As of when we met with this group, there are about 65 homes for sale which is a small percentage of the total homes in DH. In addition, we were told that there are almost no rental homes available. The main reasons for buying in DH seem to be overall safe community, well maintained properties, and the various amenities available to residents. The Board has met with the GM, the Admin staff, and all the managers. I think I can speak for the POA Board is saying that we have been impressed with the overall capabilities of everyone. Our first Board meeting was recorded and uploaded to YouTube by a resident. Due to Covid-19 we have not been able to thoroughly investigate other ways to provide visual meetings to the residents. We hope to have a better idea of this situation in the next month. The August meeting will be recorded and uploaded to YouTube as soon as possible. We’ve gotten off to a good start in better understanding the overall POA situation. Everyone wants a simple solution. Unfortunately, there is not one simple idea or process that can be used. There are several legal questions that have never been answered. At some point, definitive answers will be required. You are encouraged to sign up to receive e-blasts from the POA so that you can receive up-to-date information. We want to ensure that you can receive up-to-date, accurate info directly from the POA and not have to depend on outside sources of information. The Board has agreed to make decisions in public so that, if you’re interested, you can have access to the decision-making process. Hope to see you at the next Board meeting.

Allison is in the process of setting up Sunday School opportunities, be on the lookout for communication on this. The youth are still holding weekly zoom calls on Sunday evenings. We have sent a poll out to our Youth and Children's families regarding a potential return, let us know if you have not received that email.

Box 6481, Diamondhead, MS 39525. 228-861-2287 CRUELTY AT THE DUCK POND By Toni Grey On August 2, a concerned and compassionate resident posted information and photos on Facebook of two of the Duck Pond’s white geese who had been run down and killed near the Community Center. She was thoughtful enough to remove the geese from the road. We discovered later that one of the two geese killed was the one we featured in an article in December 2018. She

was the last female white goose in the pond. She had been dumped in the Summer of 2018. She had a defective beak making it more difficult for her to eat. She was attacked by a Snapping Turtle only a few months later. Her leg and foot turned black, but it survived and she was left crippled. The other goose who was killed was her buddy and stayed close to her as if to try and protect her. Each year in the Spring, she laid eggs but even though she did her best to protect them, the Raccoons got to them. One day she showed up with a bloody face as if having been in a fight with a predator. So, the crippled goose survived having a defective beak, a Snapping Turtle attack and a raccoon fight, but she could not escape being run down by a 4000 lb. vehicle driven by a reckless, irresponsible driver. Her surviving 5member goose family have all been dumped at the
pond over the years and have been obviously grieving their loss. These are not wild geese like the Canada Geese. These are all domestic geese (three Chinese Brown geese and two white ones left) who have been dumped. In the five years I have lived next to the pond, I have seen many ducks and geese killed by cars and trucks. I have also seen a white goose shot and bleeding at Christmas time and eventually died. There was a beautiful large white Embden goose with blue eyes (like Mother Goose Fairytales) who turned up missing one day only to find out from a landscaper months later that teenagers bragged about taking and killing her to see how she tasted. They didn’t like the taste and threw her away. These are God’s creatures who give a lot of pleasure to the residents and their children. They are like pets to the community, but there is an
element of evil who prey on anything good. I caught two older teenage boys throwing rocks at the domestic geese who were near the water. The geese were squawking and running from them. I drove over and confronted the boys, explaining that the pond was the geese’s home and they were not hurting anyone. The teens were belligerent and saying with confidence that their Dad said they could come shoot them in the Winter. People have come forward with solutions to this problem. Some have said that signs should be posted discouraging people from dumping domestic geese and ducks. Others have said that a traffic camera should be installed and violators whether speeding or killing the geese and ducks should be fined. We have talked with the City about the possibility of installing a fence. But a fence will not stop evil people determined to hurt helpless animals just because they can. Dino and the Hound Update: At the time of this writing, Dino is doing great, but still needs a “forever home”. The hound is still evading capture.
EAST HANCOCK LIBRARY By Mary Gobert September! Whaaaat??? It seems time flies even in quarantine. All library access information is very fluid right now. As this goes to press in mid-Au-
gust, the library remains closed. Hopefully, however, by the time you read this the doors are once again open. You can also call our branch at 2554800. The good news is that even if you can’t physically be in the library, you can always take advantage of free virtual resources. Here are some examples. FREE BOOKS! The library is giving away free books during the closure. They are located next to the book drop. Books are available for all ages, but they are mostly for adult
readers. Come get something good to read by the pool! FREE WI-FI! Even though the doors are closed, the wi-fi network can reach you in the parking lot! Bring your own device and go to town! The library staff has even put out some chairs for those who were raised on the surface of the sun and can stand the heat! BRAINFUSE FREE TUTORING HELP! Live tutors are available from 2-11P.M. daily. In our crazy times with kids learning from home, adults looking for self-improvement opportunities, etc., Brainfuse is an awesome thing to have. DIAMONDHEAD GARDEN CLUB The COVID 19 cases in Mississippi are still going up, so with caution in mind the September meeting is canceled. We are planning to have a meeting on October 21st, outside in the grassy circle at the front of the Country Club. There is certainly enough room to social distance. Bring your own chair. 9:30 am social time, 10 am meeting time. Meet under the big oak tree. The program will be Linda Naron showing and telling how she measured all the trees we registered. There is a large oak tree in the circle that she has been

WINE CLUB RETURNS THURSDAY SEPT. 17 The Diamondhead Wine Club is dedicated to the exploration and enjoyment of wine. At each monthly tasting, we sample at least 6 different wines and learn a little about their history and origins. The Club is open to any who are interested in enjoying and
learning about wine. Join us at our upcoming tastings: THURSDAY, SEPT. 17, MERITAGE (aka BLENDS), 7:00 P.M. at the Club French wines have almost always been blends of more than one grape varietals. In many other countries, winemakers often began by offering varietals made from a single type of grape, e.g. Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, however, a vast majority of wines are blends made from multiple grape varieties. Some of these blends are proprietary (secret) while others prominently display their composition on their labels. Come join us as we see what we can find. Clubs CONTINUED, FROM PAGE 16 opment, adding to those already here, which are the Tiger Trail, Bayou Trail, and the Powerline Trail. New developments include a boardwalk along the planned Montjoy Creek improvement which follows the creek to Rotten Bayou and features a fishing pier, birding pavilion
and a kayak launch. This project is already funded and is in the permitting process, and will hopefully be the first of these new trails to be ready for DH hikers to try out. Another plan involves the implementation of a Noma Drive Trail which would include a combina-

tion of trails, pedestrian bridges and deck walks that would provide additional access to Rotten Bayou. It would connect with the Montjoy Creek Trail and have access to the ball fields on Noma Drive, potentially supporting a 5K race. A further, and even more ambitious, plan for the Airport Loop Trail would connect north and south
Diamondhead, potentially put a fishing pier in the Cutoff lake and provide safe bicycle and hiking crossing of I-10 (imagine that, DH Hikers….!!) There are many other details that have been outlined in these plans and we hope some, if not all, will become reality soon. Meanwhile, pack a picnic lunch (keep up our “hiking and eating” tradi-
tion) and get out there and take a hike along one of the current trails. Don’t forget to take some photos along the way and post them on the DH Geaux Hiking Facebook page. Oh, don’t let club membership be a problem. Just ask to join and we’ll let you in (and also give you the secret password… umhum… the secret handshake will have to wait for
later…). There are no fees. Everyone is welcome. In this hot, humid weather, several players have started using antiperspirant on their hands to help keep the hands dry. This seems to work well. The ABCD 2 Best Balls format was played twice. John Venus, John Bunce, Chuck Ingraham, and Warren Morgan recorded the overall best team score with a -24 followed by the team of Dene Demedicis, Pat Jarrell, Val Miller and Jerry Stamp with a -23. In the two times this format was used. Gene Demedicis, Lee Kormandy Al Mast, John Bunce and Tom O’Connell won money both days. A Scramble was played on a cart-path only day and David Barbato, Mike Cavataio, Al Mast and Marian Rotolo led the scoring with a -8 followed closely with by Gene Demedicis, Lee Kormandy, Frank Morrow , Don Crosby, Chuck Ingraham, Warren Morgan and Bill Vandervort when two teams recorded a -7. In the Peers format Bill Rushing recorded the best individual score with a + 6. Three teams posted scores of +3 to tie for first place. The teams were Don Cros-

That shows some serious accuracy with his irons. John Bunce won twice on one day while Mike Cavataio and Frank Morrow won two times during the four rounds of play covered in this article. Art Burgoyne had a shot that ended up 3 feet 1 inch from the cup on #17 of the Cardinal giving him the best overall tee shot on a par 3 during the 4 rounds. Leading the money list for 2020 is Al Mast, John Bunce, Gene Demedicis, Mike Cavataio and Frank Morrow. The 1st Flight winner was Margie James who scored 75, Jodi Crosby was second with a 76 and third was Jeanne Hudgins with a 77. The 2nd Flight winner was Betty Bowen who scored 74, Terri Woolbright was second with a 76 and third was Colleen Jones with a 77. The 3rd Flight winner was Cathy Weber who scored 75, Patty Hourin was second with a 77 and third was Carol Kirschenbaum with a 84. Birdies were had by Jodi Crosby, Cassandra Godbold and Margie James. Closest to the Pin on the Cardinal Course were hole #4 Patty Hourin, hole #7 Cassandra Godbold, hole #13 Terri Garrett and hole #17 Betty Bowen. No chip ins were had. July 9th we played a game where you only count the even numbered holes and take half your handicap on the Pine Course. The winner of the 1st Flight was Teresa Ertel with a score of 32, second place was Jeanne Hudgins with a 32.5 and third was Cassandra Godbold with a 37. The winner of the 2nd Flight was Joyce Teerling with a score of 34.5, second place was Becky Stritzel with a 35 and third was Amy Swint with a 36.5. July 16 we had our special tournament the Pal Tournament. This is where you pair up with your Pal and play Net Best Ball. After this tournament some are still pals and some are not (I think we all stayed pals). There was a tie for 1st place teams. Joanne Fried/Carol Kirschenbaum shot 68 and Teresa Ertel/Colleen Jones shot 68. Second place team was Jeanne Hudgins/ Cathy Weber shot 69 and third place team was Jodi Crosby/Margaret Papaleo shot 70. There was only one birdie by Becky Stritzel. The closest to the pin on the Cardinal course was hole #4 Cathy Weber, hole #13 & #17 Jodi Crosby (we call her dead on Crosby). Chip ins were had by Betty Bowen, Joanne Fried and Margaret Papaleo. July 23rd was a rain out. July 30th we played a game we had never tried before, 3 Club Only! You could only play with three clubs for all eighteen holes!! You really had to think about what clubs to use in all situations. It was very wet after a week of 10 inches of rain and we hope to do this again with dryer conditions. Since we only had three clubs everyone got to tee off the black tees and we used the black tee handicap. The 1st Flight winner was Mary Lou Czaplicki with a score of 79, second place was Jeanne Hudgins with 81 and there was a tie for
third between Jodi Crosby and Margie James with 82. The 2nd Flight winner was Linda Metz with a score of 77, there was a tie for second between Colleen Jones and Liz Bell with 81 and third place was Becky Stritzel with 82. Birdies were had by Linda Metz, Terri Woolbright, Cassandra Godbold, and Jeanne Hudgins. Closets to the pine on the Cardinal course was hole #4 Liz Bell and hole #13 & 17 Linda Metz (we will have to call her dead on Metz). Chip in was had by Linda Metz. Linda Metz was hot that day, she won everything you could win.

Months of taking precautions in our gatherings against this virus pandemic. Pandemic clearly meaning that we are not alone in this. This problem is worldwide! The Nines continue to try to get in as much golf as weather permits. It allows us to socialize at a distance and be outside instead of in our homes. On Sunday, July 5th, we were notified by the Pro Shop that the Two-Day Eclectic Tournament scheduled to be played on July 7th and July 14th would have to be delayed for one week and played on July 14th and 21st because of aerating maintenance being done on our Pine Course. So, on Tuesday, July 7th, we decided to play a Scramble. Teams

will be drawn by A, B, C & D flight players. If your team has only three players, you will play with a Ghost. These parameters have been explained in previous articles. While 33 gals ventured out to play and we really thought we were going to get our round in, Mother Nature had other ideas and after a few holes the skies opened up and we had to cancel our game. However, Mary Craig Murray did have a Chip-In on hole #14. Congrats! Mary. Twenty-Two players signed up to play in our two-day Eclectic Tournament beginning on July 14th. For those of you unfamiliar with the term “eclectic”, this Tournament is played on two consecutive Tuesdays on the

Example: If you shot a 7 on the first hole the first week, but shot a 5 on the same hole the following week, the 5 is recorded as your score for that hole. It was a very warm day, but we did persevere. Both Jerry Ingraham and Therese Mauterer scored birdies on hole #4. Plus, Jerry also had a ChipIn on hole #4. That will certainly help their scores next week. The following Tuesday, July 21st, we played the second part of this Tournament. After applying their appropriate handicaps, the winners were awarded in each of the four flights. In Flight #1 - 1st Place was taken by Audrey Ramirez while 2nd Place was shared by Ann Nutting and Judy Tauzin. In Flight #2 - Sue Hebert took 1st Place, Sandy Merdinyan took 2nd Place while Pat VanDervort garnered 3rd Place. In Flight #3 1st Place was taken by Marsha Roberts, 2nd Place by Sylvia Corban and 3rd Place by Jerry Ingraham. In our Black Flight 1st Place went to Carol Wyrosdick, 2nd Place to Jeri Harris and 3rd Place to Lenna Weisenhorn. No one managed to have a Birdie or Chip-In during this second round of play. Waves of rain for three days in a row falling on our Gulf Coast generated by passing hurricane Hannah caused our Tuesday morning golf on the 28th to be cancelled. Guess we will just have to see if our course is dried out enough to play next Tuesday. In the meantime, we remind you to stay safe as we continue to battle against COVID-19. One thing we can be thankful for is Golf is not a close contact sport. Always SCATTER - NOT GATHER and stay 6 to 10 ft apart.
