DIAMONDHEAD ANNUAL SPRING PILGRIMAGE he Annual Pilgrimage, sponsored by the Gulf Coast Council of Garden Clubs will be held in Diamondhead on March 26th, 2020, from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be two homes on exhibit, and the Maluhia Garden will also be on tour. We have two added attractions this year. The Diamondhead Garden Club will be holding it’s annual flower show. The theme for this year’s flower is “Downton Abbey”. This should provide some interesting designs, since the TV show takes place after World War 1. This is the era of “The Roaring ’20s” the “Art Nouveau” movement and Jazz music. The Gulf Coast Pastel and Watercolor Artists of Diamondhead will hold it’s “Gulf Coast Painters Spring Fling Art Show” in the Card room. Many of the artworks will be for sale Put the date on your calendar. Brochures, maps, and directions will be available at the Diamondhead Community Center.

SCOUTS CELEBRATE ARBOR DAY he day began with a presentation on the benefits of trees by a member of The Land Trust, was followed by a short presentation by Hancock Whitney bank on Long Term Growth as it linked to trees. These two

organizations were the sponsors of the event. The Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Girl Scouts of Diamondhead gathered at City Hall to celebrate Arbor Day by a joint planting of 70 new trees. The scouts, their parents and members of Dia-
mondhead Garden Club were there to help with digging holes and supervise the planting. Ten trees were planted at the walking trail at City Hall, 2 each of River Birch, Red Maple, Magnolia, Cypress, and Long Leaf Pine. Sixty Live Oak trees were
planted at various other locations throughout Diamondhead. These include Maui Circle, and Twin Lakes. The scouts all received their Arbor Day Merit Badges, after drinks and Cookies at East Recreation Center.

Greetings everyone! Your board and your dedicated POA staff have been quite busy over the last month. Across the board, our General Manager and all your department heads are relentlessly focusing on improving service inefficiency and amenity quality. We are all doing everything possible to ensure your POA is as efficient as possible, moving forward into 2020 and beyond.
In the administration department, we’ve completed a total revamp and modernization of our employee benefits and payroll systems. Those changes will save us over $230,000 per year. We’ve also just completed a comprehensive review of all of our property and general liability insurance policies and have also found significant savings there as well. I want to give a well-deserved shout out to our Controller Darrion McInnis for his tireless efforts on our behalf. In the golf shop, we’ve
completed our transition to the new EZLinks point of sale system. EZLinks significantly lowers administrative overhead and streamlines our integration with our Quickbooks accounting system. All these critical administrative systems improvements are essential to keeping your costs low and quality high. The online payment portal previously introduced is also part of our administrative system overhaul. We encourage you to take advantage of this easy to use service and sign up

On the Southside, we have several important topics to discuss. After navigating all the regulatory hurdles, we’ve released the RFP for dredging Paradise Canal, also known as the “Main Canal.”

Business CONTINUED, FROM PAGE 2 The project includes the finger canals currently experiencing access problems. With a February 26 bid opening, we expect work to begin very soon! For those of you interested in this project, you can find the RFP materials online at https://diamondheadms.org/poa-communications/. I know many of you have also been following the story of our Ship Store and Bait Shop at the Marina. Unfortunately, we were unable to find a permittable solution that would allow us to keep the facility on land. The issue arose when MEMA conducted a community flood risk audit. Structures like the Ship Store cannot be permitted in flood areas determined to be Velocity Zones. Noncompliance with this standard would result in a lower community score and higher flood insurance rates for everyone. We hired engineers to develop alternative plans, and the City went to bat to help us find an affordable and permittable solution. We much appreciate the City’s efforts on our behalf. The solutions proposed were similar to those used by nearby communities. Ultimately, we were unsuccessful and had to move the facility by the MEMA imposed deadline. We also had to move some storage facilities at the Noma Drive ball fields. Until and if we can find another solution, we have moved the Ship Store and
Bait Shop to the water in a small houseboat. For the most up-to-date and accurate information, be sure to visit your POA website at www.diamondheadms.org, where you can sign-up for our e-blast. National Puppy Day Get ready for an overdose of cuteness, because March 23 is National Puppy Day! Established in 2006, National Puppy Day celebrates puppies’ unconditional love and their ability to bring so much joy into our lives. While we are all softies when it comes to these precious furballs, Puppy Day is also designed to raise awareness about puppy mills and help prospective pet owners consider adoption. The SPCA receives abandoned puppies from time to time like the one we acquired on Martin Luther King weekend. A resident called us reporting that she found a small Corgi mix chained to the menu sign at the Burger King. The puppy was barely a year old. The resident named him B.K. The SPCA took him to the Vet for medical

Daisy Mae helped raise money for the SPCA with an annual fundraiser to help her “furry friends” in Diamondhead. GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP Help for the pain of losing a loved one If you have lost someone you love, you know just how painful and unbearable the feelings are. If you are still suffering the pain of loss or know someone who is going through this, there is help. There is a 6-week Grief Support Group that will be meeting again for the Spring Session beginning March 17. If the loss was recent, or even sometime in the past, it can be a helpful way to deal with the lingering emptiness, loneliness, and host of other feelings that accompany death. Grief is a normal human experience. If you are in a relationship in your life, whether it is marital, parent/child, sibling, friendship, or committed partnership, you will experience grief if one of the
persons die. Grief expresses itself in a vast number of ways. It may be very clear that you are in pain from the loss. It can affect sleep, appetite, work, mood, thinking, productivity, or other relationships. If you find yourself “off” since your loss, that may be the way you are doing grief. Regardless, there are ways to soften the pain, and one of the most effective ways is to share the loss with others who are also going through grief. A grief support group provides a safe, confidential place to share individual memories, thoughts, and feelings with others who understand your pain. As you listen to others in the group talk about their loss, it also has a healing effect for each member of the group. Please consider joining this group that is being offered in the Diamondhead community. It is facilitated by experienced counselors who want to help you process your loss and move forward in a healthy and positive way. The group will meet at St. Thomas Episcopal Church at 5303 Diamondhead Circle, across from the Diamondhead Community Center. They begin at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17 and will last for approximately an hour. Sessions are free to the participants. Selene Travels to Dixie for 2020 By Sue W. Warren
agnolias and Moonlight, Cotton and River Boats, Moss-Hung Trees, and Graceful Ladies in beautiful gowns escorted by Handsome Gentlemen in tuxedos—visions of the old South overflowed the elegantly-appointed Emerald Ballroom at the Diamondhead Country Club on January 18 as the Krewe of Selene traveled to none other than storied Dixie for 2020. Sandy Hatem’s vision of the Old South truly took Diamondhead to another time and place. The evening began when the ever-popular Selene Dancers burst into the ballroom in red and black riverboat dancehall costumes and tambourines, performing to a rousing calliope and banjo rendition of “Waiting for the Robert E. Lee”, led and choreographed by the talented Mary Young Mizell. Dinah Knobloch took the microphone and introduced the emcee for the evening, Pam Hense, who entered the ballroom from the rear to the fan-favorite and rarelyheard “Dixie”. Recognition of royalty visiting from Krewes in Diamondhead followed: King Scott McNamee and Queen Jamie Morgan, Krewe of Diamondhead; King Ken Dropco and Queen Janie Dropco, Boaters Association; King Tim Kennedy and Queen Kelly Kennedy, Krewe of Olympus. Previous Kings and Queens of the Krewe of Selene in attendance were also recognized. Founder and Captain of the Krewe of Selene, Terri Downie,

made a grand entrance escorted by Hoppy Smith and Mark Cuevas. The Queen was wearing a stunning black gown, mantel and headpiece and made her way into the ballroom to take her place for the festivities to the most appropriate “Mame”. Emcee Pam reminisced a bit on all things dear to the hearts of Southerners and Dixie: home of sweet tea--also known as the house wine of the South--pecan pie, gumbo, and Georgia peaches. The ubiquitous pine tree and sweet-smelling gardenias could also be included in this list!!! Pam also touched on various possible originations of the term “Dixie”, beginning with the minstrel song written by Daniel Decatur Emmett in 1859, to the Mason Dixon Line drawn in 1767, and ending in New Orleans with their ten-dollar note and the French for 10—“dix”— written on the back. The Krewe Of Olympus Krewe of Kamehameha celebrate Jewels Mardi Gras Ball of the Sea By Secretary Mary Alice Sierveld

tlantis is a fictional island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. There have been books, movies, and fancy resorts of the same name, but the real Atlantis was the site of yet another fabulous ball chaired by our amazing Krewe President Betty Maxwell. The ballroom was resplendent with sparkling silver fish swimming on shiny blue panels thanks to the efforts of Candy Motz, backdrops of the underwater city itself, a photo op featuring a pair of seahorses pulling a giant shell, a stage featuring pillars wrapped in blue tulle and white lights and draped with deep blue skirting with more lights. Sunken treasures were displayed on the ends of the stage. The tables brought to life the vision of our decorator par excellence Betty Maxwell. Mirrored squares held aqua tulle, white pillars, and white shell vases holding underwater greenery. All of this was draped in blue tulle and fairy lights, with seashells scattered throughout. The white chair covers sported blue bows. A sunken chest spilling over with booty was seen in the bar and bistro tables held green glass balls and more shells. A back table was framed by pink and blue seahorses

The pageantry began with Krewe Secretary Mary Alice Sierveld asking for a moment of silence for members who were no longer with us, Dr. Mark Jensen, Queen Hera IX Pat Robertson, and 2020 Apollo John O’Brien. Past Olympus Kings and Queens, known as the Krewe Janus were introduced. She then presented the Master of Ceremonies, Doug Maxwell who entered with his mighty trident. The members of the
color guard, Pat Laird, Paul Larsen, and David Motz came forward and member Carlene Daborval led us in the singing of the National Anthem. The anthems of the 5 branches of the armed forced were played and past service members were invited to stand as their anthem was played. Current royalty and the King and Queen’s special guests were then introduced. Emcee Doug gave a brief history of the Krewe and introduced officers and

nly a mere month ago Diamondhead Boaters Association, Krewe of Kamehameha, coronated new royalty in an enchanted garden setting. King Ken Dropco and Queen Janie Lamb Dropco’s story continued in the kingdom of Diamondhead taking their royal subjects exploring for Jewels of the Sea on February 8th, 2020. Mardi Gras ball chairman, Barbara Miller, with the help of Pamela Marshall’s talents set guests a sail with glittery sea life decor and faux aquarium tablescapes. The evening was full of traditional pageantry, dancing and whimsical entertainment. The krewe’s 45th Mardi Gras Ball kicked off with Ron Rech, master of ceremonies, captivating the crowd with a descriptive introduction to what the night would entail after his grand entrance to “Minnie the Mermaid” by Firehouse Five, with his very own mermaid in tow! Acknowledgment of past courts, royal dolphin recipients and royalty from other Mardi Gras krewes in attendance were recognized and welcomed prior to the court’s Jewels of the Sea

She was a delegate to the 2004 Democratic National Convention from Mississippi’s Fourth Congressional District. The meeting will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 19 in Emerald Room 1 at the Diamondhead Country Club. All are welcome to attend DPIA meetings. They are on the 3rd Thursday of every month. DH GEAUX HIKING CLUB Well, February 2020 is already, as they say, “in the record books,” and the Geaux Hikers enjoyed our relatively moderate (ya could even say “warm”) winter so far, as we had fabulous nearly 80-degree temperatures for our January hike to the Chalmette Battlefield (the site of the last great battle of the War of 1812 between the U.S. and Britain). Our group included a couple of “experts,” a history buff and spell-binding storyteller, Johnnie Phillips; and Lee Taylor, great-great-grandnephew of Andrew Jackson, the legendary General and U.S. President. Needless to say, we were enthralled learn the significance and consequences of the fight that occurred on Lacoste’s Plantation turned battlefield. We walked along the canal and earthworks that Jackson’s men constructed; climbed upon the levee that formed a critical defense during the battle and walked amongst the mouldering graves of those who lost their lives, not only in this battle, but in other

confrontations. There is much to experience at this historic site, from the visitor’s center chock full of information, to the Katrina-damaged plantation manse, to the carefully documented cemetery, where, by the way, some of the trees have completely encapsulated headstones. We did not experience it all so, we put this on the list for a re-visit. Lunch was at Rocky and Carlo’s:
famous mac ‘n cheese with “red sauce,” spaghetti and giant meatballs, and huge portions of really good homestyle food. In January we also visited the WWII Museum in NOLA. Everything you hear about this place is true … everything. You could spend days here … viewing artifacts, watching media accounts, battle footage, and listening to personal stories; absorbing
careful descriptions of the major aspects of the “war that changed the world” from all of the “theaters of action” (and, yes, there are airplanes hanging from the ceiling). There are places to sit down strategically placed throughout the complex, some to accommodate those who are quietly reflecting on their own past. We also enjoyed

We dodged the raindrops and beat the rush to the restaurant; but ask about our unplanned tour/detour of the French Quarter and environs … (Yah, well, let’s take that next turn … Um, oh, well, I guess… Yikes! Did you see that pothole we almost hit?!!) Our next January adventure led us to the Kern’s Mardi Gras World. Part museum, part warehouse, part workshop and total FANTASY world! After expanding from their historic property in Algiers, the creative “krewe” at Kerns have a really “kewl” location in the emerging warehouse district of NOLA. They will come and pick you up in their shuttle for free from one of their several pick-up/drop-off sites. Once there, we learned their secrets: “How do they make that?” “Why did they make that?” And, OK, we were in the French Quarter … in NOLA … so yah, we did stop for a bite (ok, a sip and a bite ... um-hum) at Tujague’s for (wait for it ...) LUNCH! where they’ve been serving notable cuisine for 160 years. And we couldn’t leave without a stroll through the French Market (trinkets and souvenirs, and OSCAR is still there). And then, suddenly, it was February and some of us animal lovers banded together for another GH “pop-up” (that’s when one of the club members says, “Why don’t we …” and a

few of us kinda go along with the idea … and, well you know where this could lead ... um-hummm…) So we grabbed chairs and coolers and snagged really good parking and sitting spots along the beach in Ocean Springs with a view of the OS to Biloxi bridge and, yes!, we got to see the Clydesdales up close as they unloaded and got hitched to that iconic beer wagon and started their clip-clopping parade. We then discovered a great place for, what else? Lunch (or in our case, brunch)! At the Blue Dog Bistro. They do breakfast all day and we vouch for the perfectly done steak and eggs with their signature champagne and cranberry juice cocktail. Then, as we were leaving, here came the
Clydesdales, ending their parade right in front of the Blue Dog. Now, if that wasn’t cool enough, our next February hike to the Crosby Arboretum in Picayune gave us another surprise (or two). First, our illusive “founding father,” Obie Watts appeared to join us as we wandered through the swamp, marsh, and woodlands of this well-curated 64-acre natural conservatory. We fed turtles, caught early flowers and budding trees (yes, spring is getting a head-start) but Obie arranged for a special treat: a conversation with two “tree experts”: Dr. Malcolm Guidry, Arborist; and Dr. Fred Fellner, LSU’s Landscaping Administrator. These guys told us about
how trees communicate with each other underground and shared their abundant knowledge on many topics ranging from global warming to how trees defend themselves from, yes, predators. (Betcha didn’t know that, huh?) And, we also got a special invitation. (Psst! Watch this newspaper for information on a future escapade!) Can’t end this report without telling you where we went for lunch: Middendorf’s in Slidell. More than one of us enjoyed their famous spectacular thin-fried catfish (and somebody even tried the turtle soup, which probably didn’t come from the pond at the Arboretum) and we all took home a box. Looking at our March planner, we will have our monthly organizational meeting at 6 p.m. in the Lakeview Room at the Diamondhead Country Club on Tuesday, March 3. Join us as we “plot” our next adventures. Also in March, we have two hikes on the schedule. Thursday, March 19: hike the St. Tammany Trace beginning and ending at the Mandeville, LA, entrance. And call us crazy, but we’re gonna do BOTH breakfast (at Lalou’s) and lunch (at Rip’s — ’cause they have 25-cent martinis). Saturday, March 28, we’ll go to Madisonville, LA, to walk through the swamp at Fairview-Riverside Sate Park, the marsh
to the marina, tour the Maritime Museum and maybe the Historical Museum and, of course, do lunch. There’s going to be a lot going on in Madisonville on this day, so there will be “something for everybody.” There is no charge to join the DH Geaux Hiking Club. All ages and abilities are welcome. When the weather has been good the golf activity has been fairly busy. Weather has presented challenges for us but according to golfers traveling through the area the condition of our golf facilities in Diamondhead are better than most. Our golfing guests, from near and far, continue to compliment Diamondhead Country Club on our service, hospitality, facilities, golf course conditioning, and our community as a whole. We appreciate your help spreading the good word about golf in Diamondhead. March is just one of many exciting months for golf. The PGA Tour Champions Rapiscan Systems Classic Qualifiers are again being held on our Pine course on March 20 and March 23r We also will be hosting the inaugural Gulf Coast Collegiate on March 1-3. Also, the 2nd annual Jack O’Neill Memorial Golf Benefit will be held on March 28. With the Big Kahuna Golf Challenge moving to NEW dates of April 3-5, we will be busy preparing for this popular golf event as well. These events along with a few others and the increased activity from snowbirds should make for a busy month. Our 23rd Annual Sweetheart Scramble was held on Sunday, Feb. 16. For the first time that I can remember we had three consecutive Wednesday play days cancelled due to weather conditions. The one play date was a Scramble when the team of Al Mast, Frank Morrow, Joe Murray and Don Perkins led the scoring with a -9. John Benus, Pat Jarrell, Bill Rushing and Tyrone Sartin came in second with a -8 followed by three teams with -7. The USGA plus the R&A have completed a multiyear study concerning the average length of golf shot shots today. Key findings of the project include 1) There is a 100-year trend of hitting distance increases in golf, as well as a corresponding increase in length of golf courses across the globe. The USGA plus R&A believe this continuing cycle is detrimental to the game’s long-term future 2) The inherent strategic challenge presented by many golf courses can be comprised, especially when those courses have not or cannot become long enough to keep up with increases in the hitting distance of golfers who play from the longest tees. This can lead to many courses becoming less challenging or obsolete 3) Increased hitting distance can begin to undermine the core principle that the challenge of golf is about needing to demonstrate a broad range of
skills to be successful 4) If courses continue to lengthen, it is at odds with growing societal concerns about the use of water, chemicals and other resources 5) Longer distances and courses, longer tees and longer times to play are taking golf in the wrong direction and are not necessary for a challenging, enjoyable and sustainable game 6) A concern has been identified that many recreational golfers are playing form longer tees than necessary relative to their hitting distance and that the forward tees on many golf courses are very long for many of the golfers who play from them. The chief executive officer of the USGA is quoted stating, “This is about the long- term future of the game. These increases have had a profound impact on costs to build, modify and operate golf courses and have an impact on golfers at every level. This problem will continue unless this cycle ends. With collaboration from the entire golf community, we have the opportunity to stem this tide and help ensure golf remains sustainable and enjoyable for generations
to come.” Obviously, some of the above findings have a limited effect on most of us playing in DH. However, trying to “read between the lines,” my guess is that eventually changes to the golf ball and/or clubs may be implemented for the 500 or so world-wide professional golfers so their hitting distances are reduced. That may also mean that recreational golfers would remain playing with balls and clubs that are not legal in the pro-level golf environment. What do you think about that?

January was warm, cold, wet and dry but we were able to get three out of five play days in. On Jan. 9 we had our monthly Trophy Day and this month it was Net scoring. Our winner overall the flights was Beverly Cox with a score of 68. In the 1st Flight there was a tie for first place, Dianne Ackerman and Linda Metz with a score of 72. In the 2nd Flight Amy Swint was first with a score of 71 and Cathy Weber was second with a score of 74. Birdies for the day were Cassandra Godbold with two birdies, Joyce Teerlin with two birdies and Dianne Ackerman with one birdie. Chip-ins were had by Cassandra Godbold and Lotti Williams. In the 2nd Flight Margaret Papaleo won first place with a score of 36 and again there was a three way tie for second place with a score of 39, they are Joanne Fried, Kathy Bell and Cathy Weber. There were no birdies or chip-ins. Closest to the Pins were hole #4 Joanne Fried, hole #7 Kathy Bell, hole #13 Rita Durham and hole #17 Joanne Fried. On Jan. 30 we played a Scramble. On Tuesday, Jan. 14, we played Irons Only. So we all had to leave our woods home and play only with the iron clubs in our bag. Only first and second place awards were given in each flight. And, that game’s winners were: First Flight - 1st Place — Therese Mauterer and 2nd Place — Pat Vandervort. Second Flight - 1st Place — Nancy Sislow and 2nd Place — Kathie Pierson. Third Flight - 1st Place — Kathy Jones and 2nd Place — Carol Wyrosdick. Unfortunately, no ChipIns or Birdies were scored during this round. Good ol’ Mother Nature got her two cents worth in on Tuesday, Jan. 21, and due to very low temperatures forecasted for that morning, our play was cancelled. We had better luck weather-wise on Jan. 28 when we played a Scramble. This month our Scramble was composed of five
member teams. The First Place Team was made up of Therese Mauterer, Linda DeParto, Kathie Pierson, Betsy Lyons and Carol Wyrosdick. The Second Place Team included: Judy Tauzin, Marily Galus, Marlene Gossard, Kathy Jones and Edie Bearson. And, again, no Chip-ins or Birdies were recorded. MOST HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH SPRING 2020 GOLF TOURNAMENT The Modified Scramble with moving tees will be played on the Cardinal course in Diamondhead. There will be a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 18. Teams will receive 10% of their total handicaps to
obtain a net handicap. Moving tees means that your team will tee off each hole based on your team’s score on the previous hole. All teams will start on Red Tees. Depending on your team’s play, you may tee off from tees you have not played lately. The Tees will be placed in flights before the tournament starts. The Sliver Slipper will provide food on the course while various distributors will supply beer, soft drinks and water. In addition, there will be several holes on the course where other refreshments will be provided. The par 3 holes will be offering a new Ford Fusion, or a set of golf clubs should you make a hole-in-one on the designated par 3 hole. The plan is to play four places in each flight. Last year $2,400 was distributed to the winning teams. Ties will split the money. The payouts will be determined by how many teams participate. Last year, there were four flights with nine teams in each flight for a total of 144 players. Three or four teams had to be turned away because of the full field of golfers. McDonough. Three trumpet blasts heralded the arrival of King Zeus XIII Tim Kennedy and his Queen Hera XIII Kelly Kennedy. Kelly was the personification of beauty in a silver satin gown with a halter neckline and flowing skirt. A stunning statement necklace accessorized the gown perfectly. They made their way to the stage followed by Apollo John Kunellis and his lovely Aphrodite Janelle Kunellis. Janelle wore a beautiful gold brocaded trumpet gown accented with a broad pearl collar. Likewise, King Steve was honored to wear the crown of his father King Henry Burkhardt. King Henry is fondly called “King Daddy” by his family! The gowns of all the maids were various shades of hunter green, reminiscent of the dress that Scarlet O’Hara famously made from her mother’s green velvet curtains in the much-loved Southern classic, “Gone With The Wind”. The gowns were complimented by gold opera-length fingerless gloves, reflecting the gold in the Queen’s ball gown. Maid Gail chose a stunning green slim-fitting sequined dress, and Maid Sue wore a dark green fitted sequined mermaid gown layered with lace and net, also sporting a train. The King was “kingly” in white tails and gold bow tie while his dukes wore traditional and elegant black tuxedos. King Jordan is the son of Queen Angie and also son of Jody Woods of Diamondhead. After the Queen and King were seated on their thrones, the Selene Dancers exploded onto the dance floor for their second appearance of the evening. In eye-catching blue sequined costumes, the Dancers delighted the audience with an exciting Rockettes-styled number to “Up A Lazy River”, a nod to the early mode of transportation in the South for
those lucky enough to be near water. Olympus CONTINUED, FROM PAGE 25 sented the King and Queen with their royal goblets. King Tim offered the royal toast to his queen and Krewe members, followed by King 2019 Kurt Braun, who offered a toast to the Royal Court on behalf of the Krewe. The court was escorted to the back of the ballroom to the song “Procession of the Nobles”, followed by the debutantes and their fathers. Within minutes, the court returned to the floor to have their first royal dance, joined shortly by visiting royalty. And dinner
was served! We chose either a filet topped with Demi Glaze or a flounder stuffed with crawfish, crab, and shrimp and covered with Hollandaise and Remoulade sauces. Both entrees were served with butternut squash soup, spinach stuffed tomatoes, Lyonnaise scalloped potatoes, and Crème Brulee. Big round of applause to the chef, and the wait staff for great service. An elaborate evening like this doesn’t just happen. Many worked long hours to make it as special as it was, and all under the guidance of Krewe President Betty Maxwell, who worked harder and longer
than the rest of us! Thanks, too, to Doug Maxwell, our music man, MC, and all around good guy. He was a huge help bringing things to and from the storage unit, setting up speakers, back drops, pillars, stage and door decorations, and I’m sure lots more! The band Southern Voice provided great dance music, as usual. Before the night was over the debs and all their pretty friends were on the stage, joined by Queen Kelly, dancing to Disco Inferno! What a memorable evening as Olympus Visited Atlantis Under the Sea! Laisses Les Bon Temps Roulez!

Maid Eva Amos and Duke Hawes Amos made their entrance. Maid Eva’s frock was a full gown with glittery top signifying Jade. An amethyst colored sequined evening dress was sported by Lady in waiting Jan Wiley who was accompanied by Equerry Gary Wiley. However, the moment everyone waited for was for His Royal Highness, King Ken Dropco, Akua Kai XLV and Her Royal Majesty Queen Janie Dropco. King Ken stood out in his white tux and gold vest and bow tie, and Queen Janie’s ball gown sparkled in glittery gold and champagne colors like a vibrant colored diamond. As the spotlight followed them
through the tables of guests and krewe members the king and queen’s jeweled robes trailed behind them as they made their way to the stage. All hail the King and Queen! Toasts were made and glasses clinked before the King and Queen honored their royal subjects with a first dance to “Turn Around and Look at Me, by the Vogues. Soon after the master of ceremonies asked for all to be seated for the Boaters surprise entertainment. Lights were extinguished, and “Orinoco Flow” by Enya played as performers, Mary Mizell, Gail Hutchings and Leslie O’Neill, in large lite wings
glided on the dance floor mimicking bioluminescent creatures under the sea. You could hear ooh and aah from all the tables throughout the room in amazement of the dancers’ water like movements. The beautiful choreography was created by the lovely Mary Mizell. Cool Rayz band played for the remainder of the night while the party goers ate and drank the night away! Another spectacular ball for Krewe of Kamehameha comes to an end. The Diamondhead Boaters Association continues their festivities throughout 2020. Happy Mardi Gras, and laissez les bons temps rouler!
Peppenger from Florida, and the King’s son Maurice and his wife Jessica Eaton of Kiln, MS. Also recognized were Lynn and Cookie Naquin, Tommy and Martha Grantham, the Queen’s Aunt Brenda Melton and guest, and the King’s parents Henry and Alice Faye Burkhardt. The crowd cheered during the Royal Promenade as the entire Court made their way down the stairs to take a final turn around the dancefloor behind the King and Queen as the Captain made her exit. The first Royal Dance was a lovely waltz performed to “Moon River” and choreographed by Maid Jane and Duke
Cat Aguda. The Queen and King were spotlighted for the beginning of the elegant dance and were joined by their Royal Court, assisted by Lynn Cox. In the middle of the dance, the Moonbeam Queen and King and the Pages took the floor to wiggle and giggle and gyrate to the delight of everyone to “I Got a Feeling” by the Black-Eyed Peas. The Royal Dance came to a close with a return to the waltz by the Royalty and Court , showcasing the Queen and King. Well done, Queen Angie and King Steve! A delicious meal followed the festivities before an evening of dancing to the music of Dr. Rock and the Interns. Special thanks

The Queen, King, and Court enjoyed their trip “Up a Lazy River”, as they were “Waiting for the Robert E. Lee” so “Mame” could board the riverboat to make her journey in the “Mississippi Mud” on her “Way Down Yonder in New Orleans” and so that she could see a beautiful “Carolina in the Morning”.
