Message from DHPOA President Bob Marthouse Greetings everyone! As you read this, I am approaching the end of my term as your POA president. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who supported me in my election and who continued to do so throughout my term. I’m grateful for the opportunity I have had to serve you as president, and I will continue to serve you as your ex-officio board member. As the election nears, I would like to reflect with you on our accomplishments over the last two years. When this board took office, we were faced with the daunting prospect of potential revenue loss as covenants begin to expire. Like you, we were gravely concerned with how this legal conundrum would impact us. We were concerned we would be unable to continue maintaining and
operating our beautiful Diamondhead amenities. We worried that those losses would damage our property values and our quality of life. We had to act quickly and decisively and we did. Our efforts to address the challenge had us looking at several different paths. Ultimately, we chose the important strategy of overhauling the business. We had to make sure we had a flexible and sustainable POA ready for any economic environment. The ongoing COVID-19 crisis has been a severe financial stress test that has proven we made the right choices. We’ve passed with flying colors! I’m proud to say that our efforts to revamp the business have been an unqualified success. How did we succeed? The only real choices for any business wanting to
survive and thrive in a challenging business environment are increasing revenue, lowering operating costs, and improving the product. Thanks to an incredibly dedicated board, hard-working committees, and a talented management team lead by our General Manager, Tom Koger, we accomplished all three of these objectives. Dues collections have improved dramatically, business revenue increased, administrative costs were slashed, and waste was eliminated as aging and costly systems were modernized. As for the product, all you have to do is look around, and see that our facilities are just spectacular. In short, all the hard work and tough choices over the last two years have resulted in the most durable POA you have ever had.
And there is more good news. If it’s true that people “vote with their wallet,” then evidence suggests that the vast majority of our members desire to remain in good standing with the POA after their covenants expire. Most notably, the yearly dues payment rate for members with June expiring covenants remains the same. I know many members were expecting a grand plan of some sort. The truth is, we just chose to fix the problems now rather than talk about what we might do sometime in the future. The real plan was to create a lean operation delivering a high-quality, high-value product. We succeeded. As you contemplate who you choose to join the POA board in this election, keep a few things in mind. Your POA is very healthy. The majority of

DCC joined the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC) in January 2020. Holy Communion is celebrated the first Sunday of each month. Worship Services: Services are held Sundays at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Holy Communion is served on the first Sunday of every month. The church has a diverse Music Ministry program. The Chancel

Most everyone I know living in Diamondhead cherishes the community for many reasons including the beautiful surroundings, the peaceful neighborhoods and the friendly people. Unfortunately, we still have problems that arise, which are upsetting. This is the most difficult and emotional subject for me to write about, but I need to make you all aware of it and what you can do to help. During the “lockdown” we received a call from a homeowner reporting that their neighbor (a renter) was seen beating two dogs chained to his back fence. The dogs did not have water and were exposed to the elements all the time. The homeowner explained that an-
other homeowner/neighbor had witnessed it on another occasion and had the courage to confront the renter and ask him to surrender the dogs to her and she would take care of them. He angrily rejected her offer. On a previous occasion, the homeowner saw the renter’s 10-yearold son beating the chained dogs as well. Subsequently, we contacted Capt. Gambino and he arranged for an officer to accompany the Animal Control officer to the renter’s home. The alleged abuser was not at home at the time the officers went by to check on the dogs. They did speak to the wife and required her to provide water to the dogs in containers that could not be turned over. Plus, they were to purchase an igloo so the dogs could get out of
the sun/heat. Animal Control told us that they would check to see that those things were provided. The bottom line is that without video, Animal Control could not do much more than that. After doing extensive research, I learned quickly that animal abuse is a major problem worldwide. The worst thing you can do if you witness or suspect animal cruelty or neglect is nothing. Please be that animal’s voice and get him out of his abusive situation immediately. If you have to make multiple reports, do it. If you see an animal in distress, call Police Dispatch at (228) 255-9191 and ask for Animal Control. It is essential to contact law enforcement when violence is involved since it is
likely part of an ongoing pattern that may include violence against people as well. (The homeowner has also witnessed the renter throwing his 10-yearold son against the fence and threatening him.) Tell the officer as many details of the situation as you can: location, date, time, description of the people and animals involved. Video and photographic documentation, can bolster a legal case. Installing a hunter’s camera pointed towards the dogs would be a plus. Provide names of others who may have witnessed the incident. The Animal Control officer recommended that the two homeowners go to the Hancock County Courthouse and file an affidavit.

The Hancock County Animal Shelter receives abused dogs all too frequently. Our featured pet this month is Julie. She is a hound/boxer mix, between 1 and 3 years old, who was found on Highway 43. When Julie arrived at the shelter she was considerably underweight. You could count her ribs. She had a scared demeanor and would flinch at sudden movement or noises. Since being at the shelter she has been able to show her true happiness and loving soul. Julie has put on some weight and is looking absolutely beautiful. Her personality is really show-

As summer begins, everyone in the Hancock County Library System wishes continued good health to you and yours. The Library Board has made no determination on when the library will reopen or what that will look like. All restarting of services and in what form they are available will occur in concert with guidelines from government and health officials. The safety of our patrons and our
staff is of utmost importance and will guide all decisions. While there has been a very discernible void for many with all library activities shut down, there are still ways to connect! A Type “Hancock County Library System” into Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. The latest information is posted on the Facebook page. A Type “Friends of Hancock County Library” on Facebook to find other informative posts. If you’re having trouble accessing the library’s digital resources, send an email to hcls@hancock.lib.ms.us. They will be happy to help you out! Some examples of our digital resources are reserving books for when the library reopens, or borrowing ebooks and audiobooks right now! An additional resource called Tumble Library is available now through August as well. You can use it through the main website. TumbleBooks’ databases are easy to use, and feature unlimited access from home. You can read as many books as you want, when you want, and on any device. I guess we have no excuse to get behind on our reading! I hope you will make good use of these resources for entertainment, diversion, education, or whatever makes this long isolation more pleasant. As many of you know and expected our May meeting was canceled. This period of “staying home” provides us with an excellent opportunity to do all those garden chores we have been avoiding. Clean out the flower beds, pull weeds, plant new annuals and perennials, trim the shrubbery, and replace all the mulch that washed out to the neighbor’s driveway. Our next meeting will be Sept. 16, 2020. Diamondhead Country club. 9:30 a.m. social time, 10 a.m. meeting starts. Everyone is welcome. Stay and have lunch with us. The Diamondhead Women’s Club will continue to monitor the situation with COVID-19 to determine when it will be safe to resume our meetings. When we are able to meet safely, we will plan a new date for our wonderful Glitz n Tits fundraiser. This fundraiser benefits both The Pink Hearts fund and the Hancock County Food Pantry. Our meetings (we do not meet in June, July or August), are normally held the first Wednesday of each month beginning at 11 a.m. at the Diamondhead Country Club in the Emerald Ballroom. Facebook Page, which, in addition to this newspaper and our email blasts, continues to be a favorite method of communication. We’re all lamenting the postponement of some of the really cool hikes that we had planned (uh, like the special guided tour of the LSU campus or the trip to Dauphin Island), but we’re putting them on our “wish-list” for the future, when we’ll be able to hike (and, yes… EAT!) together once again (yasss! We ARE a hiking AND eating club!). And some of us continue to come up with ideas for future escapades. Some of these suggestions seem perfectly harmless (“yup, that looks OK, Otto …”)
And, well, other suggestions may need further investigation … (“Oh, jumpin’ jiminy! That was a close one, Hannah …”) Stay tuned, as they say … So, as we all make adjustments to how we live, getting out to hike (yeah, OK … walk …) can be “therapeutic” (does that sound like your analyst?). RICHARD SHEPPARD Ricky is a New Orleans native who has made his home in Diamondhead with his wife, Tracy. They chose our community, over others on the Coast, because of the amenities and the covenants that protect them. Retired to Diamondhead as a full-time resident. Currently serving as a ranger on our golf courses.

I am Ronald L. James, I recently retired and moved to Diamondhead in November 2018. I previously lived in Diamondhead from 1987-1992 when I moved to Houston, Texas for continued employment. I worked in the Offshore Oil and Gas industry my entire career around the world (on 6 of the 7 Ronald James continents). I’ve worked from entry level jobs through middle management into VP officer level the last 10 years. I have been responsible for developing yearly budgets, reviewing with staff and management through final acceptance. We set yearly goals for Safety, Personnel and Financial performance with transparent reviews each quarter.
LLOYD RAMIREZ JR. Lloyd Ramirez Jr. I’m married to Jenny Ramirez. We moved to Diamondhead in January of 2015. I retired from Shell Oil Co. in May of 2017 after 32-plus years of service. I attend Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church and recently joined the Knights of Columbus. Lloyd Ramirez Jr. Throughout the years I have been involved with many community activities and projects. I am concerned about the future of the POA and the amenities. I believe through transparency of activities and accountability of finances, the POA can gain the trust of association members in order to save the amenities and uphold property values.

Mail-in ballots, proxies due June 19 Dear Property Owner, The Annual Meeting of the Members (“Meeting”) of the Diamondhead Country Club and Property Owners Association, Inc. (“POA”) is on June 20, 2020. In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the POA will conduct the election through in-person voting AND the use of mailin ballots and proxies. All mail-in ballots and proxies must be RECEIVED no later than June 19, 2020. Ballots received by mail after June 19, 2020, will not count toward the election. The purpose of this package is to provide election process information and to allow you to accurately and timely submit your vote should you choose to vote by mail. On June 20, 2020, the POA will commence the in-person voting process at 9 a.m. Voting will take place from 9 a.m.-noon. Due to the COVID-19 social distancing policy, the POA will re-convene the Meeting via conference call using the call-in information provided at the
bottom of this letter. The Meeting shall re-convene at 3 p.m. and the results of the election will be announced. Results will also be communicated by email and social media. There are four (4) officer positions and four (4) Director positions on the ballot this year. If you choose to vote by mail, you may only vote using either: 1) the enclosed absentee ballot or 2) the enclosed proxy form. Either the ballot or the proxy must be placed in the enclosed yellow return envelope and mailed. The accounting firm of Alexander, Van Loon, Sloan, Levens & Favre, PLLC (“Auditors”) has been appointed by the POA to receive the member verification forms/absentee ballots and proxy forms and tally all votes.
MAIL-IN VOTING INSTRUCTIONS ABSENTEE BALLOTS: If you do not intend to vote by proxy, you must use the enclosed member verification form/absentee ballot and the enclosed
yellow envelope. You must mail your member verification form/ absentee ballot directly to the Auditors in the enclosed yellow envelope. Your member verification form and absentee ballot must not be cut, detached, or separated for the accounting firm to verify your membership and standing. The enclosed member verification form/absentee ballot is the only form of ballot that will be accepted. No copies or alternate ballots will be accepted, and only those absentee ballots submitted in the enclosed yellow envelope will be accepted. Once you cast your absentee ballot, your vote is final. PROXIES: If you do not intend to vote by absentee ballot, submit your proxy form to the Auditors on the enclosed proxy form and in the enclosed yellow envelope. The Auditors will note the name of your proxy holder and check to ensure the proxy holder is in good standing. The proxy holder will then be con-
tacted by the Auditors by phone (at the phone number of the proxy holder registered with the POA) and asked how they wish to vote your proxy. If the Auditors cannot reach the proxy holder during the designated

Summer golf is here! Why play golf or live anywhere else? Diamondhead has it all. Our annual Summer Junior Golf Camp/Clinic has proven to be one of our most popular events. The date for this year will be July 13-July 16. Limited to the first 30 paid entries in each session. Open to all juniors age 5 to 15. $120 per junior with a $20 early bird discount if paid in full 3 days prior to start date. Check with the Golf Shop for more information or to sign up. With summer normally comes tournament golf season so be sure to mark your calendars for our great events. Each year, we look forward to hosting the Hawaiian Invitational, one of our favorite events of the year. But given the current situation with COVID-19, we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Hawaiian Couples Invitational. We explored other ways to host the Hawaiian Invitational, but it’s important to us to host a premier event and nothing less on our traditional dates, the first weekend of June. In lieu of our Hawaiian Invitational, we will be hosting a virtual couples golf tournament, the DCC Couples Virtual Classic, for our members and Mississippi residents only on Saturday, June 5. Restrict-
ed, limited field, straight tee times, no check-in prior to play, no scoreboard, no gathering or congregating. Play golf, drop off scorecards, and then go to our event website to check the results. Just a friendly reminder that due to safety concerns, the golf course property is open only for golf during hours of course operation. Hours of course operation begin at 7:30 a.m. and the last tee time of the day is 6 p.m. Golfers starting at 6 p.m. generally finish around 8 p.m. based on a typical two-hour nine-hole pace of play. During these operating hours, recreational activities such as walking, jogging, and sightseeing in golf carts are not allowed. Golfers are genuinely concerned and frightened of the thought that their golf ball could hit and injure someone that was in the field of play. The POA often informs residents and guests that being on the golf course during operating hours is not permitted — for their safety. Bicyclists, parents strolling babies, even a youngster riding a motorcycle are examples of what we see daily. Following the rules helps and protects all of us. Please be sure to post your scores in GHIN so that you have an accurate handicap index. Make sure if you play, you post. Any questions concerning your
golf handicap can be directed to one of our Handicap Committee members (Roger Schaus, Ken Foreman, Joyce Teerling, Ron Rech) or our golf professional staff. Our Lady Academy presents Outstanding Academic/Achievement Awards to Class of 2020 On May 7, 2020, Our Lady Academy (OLA) hosted its first drive through Senior Award Ceremony held at the Our Lady of the Gulf Crab Fest grounds. Principal Marilyn Pigott addressed the parents and students of the Class of 2020. “Welcome to our annual senior awards night. Although this year’s awards presentation is much different than the presentations of the past, we felt it was important to celebrate who these young women have become over the past six years at Our Lady Academy. These ladies did not quit working during their senior year, but instead, worked hard throughout their senior year
even through the face of adversity. Even when they had to work from home. The Class of 2020 sits here having established some milestones as a class of 39 students. They have earned over $4.3 million in scholarships and grants as of 5/5/2020 and the number continues to grow.” Before presenting the Class of 2020 slideshow, Class President, Elizabeth Elkins addressed her classmates: “Six years ago we entered these doors and now here we are, flying out into our futures with so many lessons and sweet memories. Enjoy the show and be glad that awkward phases don’t last forever. I think we really did set the standard for
living the dream. I hope you all agree.” Each year, students are nominated by the faculty for senior awards. The awards were presented by Ms. Susan Goggins. The American Citizenship Award is presented to the student that shows a positive attitude, strength of character, understands civic responsibility, and promotes citizenship among her peers. The nominees are Sophia Compretta, Mary Laine DeMetz, Whitney Necaise, Rebecca Walk, Hayden Henry, Elizabeth Elkins, Hayden Matheson, and Paige Palazzo. This year’s American Citizenship Award is presented to Whitney
Necaise. The Chamber of Commerce Award is presented each year for exceptional character and respect of peers and faculty. This year, the chamber was able to increase the amount of this award thanks to these generous sponsors: Digital Engineering; James J. The Mary Patricia Schmidt Character Cup is presented to the senior whose character exemplifies such traits as Christian maturity, courage, dependability, service to others, sincerity, and sta-
bility. The nominees are Lauren Willis, Olivia Alarcon, Hayden Henry, Hayden Matheson, Whitney Necaise, and Elizabeth Elkins. This year’s Mary Patricia Schmidt Character Cup is presented to Elizabeth Elkins. The Hull Award is one of OLA’s very special traditions is to honor an outstanding senior as the best all-around athlete here at OLA. This award is named after Harry Hull who taught at OLA in the Mathematics Department for 30 years. Mr. Hull soon became known as Coach Hull as he founded, promoted, and coached many of our athletic teams. Coach Hull and Waddy LeBourgeois created the first women’s high school soccer team in Mississippi in 1988. The Class of 2020 had many deserving young ladies who were amazing student-athletes. The re-
cipient of this year’s Hull Award is Paige Palazzo. The M. B. Swayze Educational Foundation sponsors the STAR Student Program in the state of Mississippi. This program recognizes the student in each high school who has earned the highest ACT score by the December test while maintaining an A average. In turn, this STAR student names a STAR teacher who has had a significant influence on her education. This year’s STAR student is Alma Hearin. Alma has chosen Ms. Susan Goggins as her STAR teacher. Congratulations! Paige Elise Palazzo, daughter of Christina and
Steve Palazzo, was named Valedictorian of Our Lady Academy’s Class of 2020. She has achieved Principal’s Honor Roll throughout high school. While at Our Lady Academy, she was a member of National Junior Honor Society, Vice President of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Interact Club, and an Ambassador Representative. Paige was also a member of the Crescent Soccer Team and Tennis Team and was a four-year letterman in both sports. Elizabeth Maria Elkins, daughter of DeeDee and Andy Elkins, is the Sal-
utatorian of Our Lady Academy High School’s Class of 2020. She has achieved Principal Honor Roll status throughout high school. She was involved in various extracurricular clubs and sports at OLA such as: Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society, Secretary of National Honor Society, Campus Ministry, Co-Editor of the Yearbook Club, Crescent Athletic Club, Captain of the Varsity Soccer Team, Quiz Bowl Team and an Ambassador Representative.
