President’s Message appy New Year from your POA board! We hope you and your loved ones had a wonderful Christmas. Your board and staff worked hard to develop a budget for 2020 that maintained the current low monthly dues of $56, and with a slight increase in our amenity fees. Look for a letter from me in your mailbox this month that outlines all of our 2020 dues and our plans for the year. You can find our 2020 Budget Summary on our website at www.diamondheadms.org. You now have the option to pay your annual and monthly dues online. It’s simple to register and get started. Visit https://hwtreasury.billeriq.com/ebpp/Diamondhead/ and follow the directions. When registering, please put three 000’s before your membership number. Our ongoing collection efforts of member dues continue, and as of Dec. 13, 2019, we

have received 1,202 payments for past due accounts this year, resulting in more than $442,229.44 collected. In a recent meeting, the board approved sharing additional financial information with you, including a Balance Sheet, every quarter. The 3rd Quarter results have been posted to our website and may be found at www.diamondheadms.org. To maintain a superior quality of life for Diamondhead residents, the POA enforces nearly 50 different sets of covenants. As most are aware, the first set of these covenants affecting a lot of houses (known as “Phase I”) will expire in June 2020. We want to make sure the covenant expirations don’t negatively impact such a special place that we have chosen to live, work, and play. To that end, the Diamondhead Futures Committee, chaired by Gary Becker, is hard at work on plans that will be released soon.
We encourage you to stop into the Country Club, present your membership card and receive a 15% discount on your entire food and beverage bill! On Wednesday nights, gather a team, eat, drink, and tease your brain at Trivia Night in the 19th Hole. Our delicious Prime Rib special is moving to Saturday nights in January. It’s a handcut to order, 12-ounce Certified Angus Beef served with horseradish sauce and au jus and your choice of two sides for $27.50. BUSINESS MINUTES OF THE MANDATED OPEN MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS DIAMONDHEAD COUNTRY CLUB AND PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION, INC. October 18, 2019 A mandated open meeting of the Board was held at the Diamondhead Country Club, Diamondhead, MS. President Bob Marthouse chaired the meeting and called it to order at 7 p.m. Present were President Marthouse, Secretary Karen Rice, Director Gary Becker, Director Teresa Ertel, Director Donald Silcio, Director Nicole Boisdore’, Director Sharon McCulley, and Ex-Officio Pat Laird. Absent were Vice President Craig Harvey, Treasurer Bill Hatchett, Director Stewart Nutting, and GM Tom Koger. Also present were Board Attorney August Rechtien, Controller Darrion McInnis and approximately 35 members. Financials – Controller Darrion McInnes presented the financials. General Manger Report – Attorney Rechtien gave the GM report in the absence of Mr. Koger. Committee Reports were given by several Committee Chairs. New Business: There was no new business to discuss or vote upon. Next Regular Meeting of the Board – Monday, November 18, 2019

Executive Session – The Executive Session was held at 6:00 PM prior to the evening’s meeting to discuss privileged legal and human resource matters. The Executive Session ended at 6:45 p.m. A brief recap of some of the items discussed was presented by President Marthouse, including the collection of new member initiation fees in the amount of $300 to be effective November 1, 2019. Member Forum – A
couple of members addressed the Board with questions and concerns. Adjournment – A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Director Boisdore’ and seconded by Ex-Officio Laird. Happy New Year, Diamondhead! Everyone at East Hancock Library wishes each of you an awesome 2020! We’ll do everything we can to contribute to that awesomeness on this end. What? You want your favorite activities to continue? You want more tech classes or maybe a new activity or program? Read on! NOTE: The library will be closed Monday, Jan. 20 for MLK Day. It will be open for 21 days though, so plan to visit a lot! Quick, quick! Get yourself to the library on the morning of Thursday, Jan. 2 at 10 a.m. for our first Make and Create of the year! This is the free choice session, so come use our supplies for your creation or bring your current masterpiece in progress. Mark your calendar for Monday, Jan. 13 for a Penny Crawford session. at this time. This includes a gift from John and Sunny Velkas who donated $925,000 to the building fund from their estate. The formal process now begins with the MHT Building Committee making a presentation to the Diocesan Finance Committee in the near future. In 2020, consider participating actively with this project, if you’re not already involved. MHT parish includes all of Diamondhead. Outreach: The Outreach Ministry provides services to individuals and families in need at the church on the first and third Saturdays of each month, from 9 to 11 a.m. Appli-
cants need to bring a form of identity, and copies of any bills for which they are seeking assistance. Priority is given to any persons residing within the church’s geographic boundaries. The Diamondhead Wine Club is dedicated to the exploration and enjoyment of wine. At each monthly tasting, we sample at least six different wines and learn a little about their history and origins. The Club is open to any who are interested in enjoying and learning about wine. Join us at our upcoming tastings: Thursday, Jan. 16, Down Under Wines, 7 p.m. at the Club It’s time for another visit with the wines from Down Under. Obviously, we are
primarily referring to Australia and New Zealand but we reserve the right to slip in a wine or two from elsewhere in the Southern Hemisphere, perhaps from Chile or South Africa. Annual Selene Royalty and Coronation Ball By Sue W. Warren

litz, Glitter, and Glamor abounded in the elegantly appointed Ballroom at Diamondhead Country Club, the setting for the exciting Royalty Ball and Coronation of 2020 Selene Queen-elect and Kingelect, Angie McClure Burkhardt and Steve Burkhardt. Sandy Hatem organized and decorated the ballroom in addition to being the MC for the festivities. The much-anticipated evening began with Sandy introducing the Founder and Captain of the Krewe of Selene, Terri Downie. Escorted by Mark Cuevas, Terri entered the ballroom and promenaded down the aisle and dance floor before taking her place next to the podium. Past royalty from each of the four Diamondhead Krewes was announced and honored with their own turns around the room, to the delight of all in attendance. Each former queen was presented a rose in honor of her reign. Kings and Queens representing the Krewe of Kamahamaha, the oldest of the Diamondhead krewes, were 2003 Jim and Marcia Frisina (also royalty for the Krewe of Diamondhead in 2007); 2009 Chuck and Jerry Ingraha;, 2016 Ron Rech and Paula Gonzalez; 2017 Jim Brownell; 2018 Richard Brown and Bobbie Yaniga Brown; and from 2019 Joe and Mary Craig Murray. Following three herald calls, the MC introduced the reigning Selene Royalty, Queen Selene the 21st Pam Marshall and King Endymius the 21st, Wayne Maxwell. Pam was also Queen of the Boaters in 2000. Queen Pam and King Wayne entered the ballroom from the rear of the ballroom and paraded around the dance floor, acknowledged Captain Terri, and took their places on thrones on the stage for one last time. The theme for this year is a journey back in time to the land of Dixie! First to enter the ballroom were Maid Jane Aguda, wearing a slimfitting, off-the-shoulder white gown, and Duke Cat Aguda, waving at the crowd as they entered the ballroom and made their way down the aisle and around the dance floor, taking their places in front of the stage. All eyes were focused on the rear of the ballroom again as Maid Gail Gonsoulin, in a beautiful royal blue gown accented with wide lace at the waist, and
Duke Kory Lawrence entered the ballroom and also paraded down the center aisle and the dancefloor before joining Jane and Cat. Last to enter were Lady-in-Waiting Sue Foster Warren, gowned in a red velvet Scarlett O’Hara evening gown with a train, and Equerry Tom Warren — they followed suit and made their way down the aisle and around the dance floor, joining the Maids and Dukes. All of the ladies wore white lace fingerless gloves and each gentleman wore a toneon-tone vest to match his lady’s dress. Each couple was greeted with cheers and applause as they made their way to the stage. The exciting moment arrived for the entrance of the Selene Royalty for 2020. MC Sandy was pleased to present QueenElect Angie Burkhardt and King-Elect Steve Burk-
hardt. Everyone stood and applauded while Angie, wearing a stunning gown in gold satin with a heavily beaded bodice, and Steve slowly made their way into the room, greeting everyone in attendance before being seated on the stage. After they acknowledged the audience, Pam Marshall crowned Angie Queen Selene the 22nd and Wayne Maxwell crowned Steve King Endymius the 22nd. The Court joined the newly crowned Royalty on stage, glasses were charged, and a toast was made by the MC, Sandy Hatem. After pictures were taken, Royal gifts were presented: Kathy and Danny Cobb presented the Royal Banner and Royal Goblets were presented by Mary Mizell and Sandy Hatem. the Chef and Staff of the Country Club — and dancing to the music of South was enjoyed by all. The evening would not have been complete without a traditional Second Line, led by the Queen and King. In keeping with the theme for 2020, Queen Angie and the Ladies of the Court paraded merrily with their white lace gloves, white lace fans and white lace parasols adorned with red fringe and trimmed in blue and
gold. King Steve and the Gentlemen, not to be outdone, carried large and gaily decorated scepters, matching the ladies’ umbrellas. It was a beautiful evening and a beautiful beginning to the 2020 Mardi Gras Season. And the motto for the 2020 Court, you ask? “Food, Fun, and Booze Aplenty, Here’s to the Court of 2020!!!” Laissez les bons temps rouler!

DIAMONDHEAD GARDEN CLUB The next meeting of the Diamondhead Garden Club will be held on Jan. 15, at 10 a.m. Social time is at 9:30 a.m. The program for the meeting will be presented by Pat Bontempo. Pat is a Master Gardener and she will tell us about this educational program and how to become a Master Gardener. It is a program sponsored by Mississippi State University. The garden club is busy making plans for their annual flower show, whose theme this year is “Downton Abbey.” Once again it will be held in conjunction with the Gulf Coast Pilgrimage on March 26, 2020. NEWCOMER DECEMBER SOIREE! With the holiday season in full swing, the Newcomers celebrated their monthly luncheon with a little Christmas cheer on Dec. 13. The group played white elephant, listened to Christmas music and dinned on a beautifully prepared holiday luncheon. All were merry and bright! If you missed the December gathering no worries, just join the us next month on Jan. 10 at noon. Come dressed to impress, wear your trendiest frock and strut your stuff into our Fashion Show-themed event! This luncheon truly is the most stylish event of the Newcomers Club calendar. DIAMONDHEAD WOMEN’S CLUB The January meeting of the Diamondhead Women’s Club will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 8 beginning at 11 a.m. All ladies that are Diamondhead residents are invited to attend. Diamondhead Women’s Club Poker Run was held on Sunday, Nov. 17 to benefit the Hancock Country Food Pantry. $1,277 was earned with winners as follows: Sandy Merdeyan won the overall poker run with three 7’s receiving a fresh crisp $100 bill. Sandy graciously donated it back for the Food Pantry. Daryl Davis won $91 in the 50/50 drawing, and also donated back for the Food Pantry. There were three Spirit Baskets winners: Small basket won by Jimmy Brownell, Medium basket won by Linda DeParto, Large basket won by Patty Blackwood.
At our next meeting the speaker will be Sonya Tyrney. She will be speaking to us regarding Ruby Ribbon, which is a new company with patented technology replacing the misery of a traditional bra with comfort, amazing back support while taking an inch off your mid-section and smoothing out those back rolls. DH GEAUX HIKING CLUB Well, we made it … the DH Geaux Hiking Club is a year old and we’re looking forward to another year of hiking, learning, and, of course, EATING! Here’s a short recap of our November and early December activities: The 41st Annual Peter
The first stop on Geaux Hiking Club’s mid-month trip to Laurel, Mississippi, was an absorbing visit to the Veterans Museum, where memorabilia donated by local veterans (or their families) of all wars is curated and displayed.
Anderson Festival in Ocean Springs on Nov. 2 was HUGE and did not disappoint! Nearly 500 exhibitors and thousands of visitors jammed the streets, which, instead of motor vehicles, were crowded with high-quality art of all types (pottery, paint, textiles, furniture, jewelry, clothing, leather and more). We watched a fascinating demonstration of iridescent glass-making and took a break at Lancasters, where we did a little people-watching between bites of a delicious lunch. We especially enjoyed hearing the personal stories of those veterans as told by museum volunteers, including Jimmy Bass, survivor of a WW2 Japanese kamikaze attack near Okinawa. This is a very special place. Our second stop in Laurel was the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, housed in a beautiful Georgian Revival home and exhibiting American art, native American baskets, paintings from Europe, prints from Japan, and a large collection of silver. Most unexpected was a special exhibit of paintings on Masonite (yes, the fiber-board invented in Laurel by William H. Mason as a building and insulation material made from waste materials from the lumber industry). And we had a downright tummy-filling lunch at Pearl’s diner, an oldtimey spot featuring home-cooked Southern fare (aaahh! Black-eyed peas!) Then, the day after Thanksgiving, we tried to reverse the effects of turkey dinners with a guided tour of the Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuge Boy Scout Road Boardwalk and Trail in Lacombe, LA. Our knowledgeable Fish & Wildlife Service guide patiently explained the nesting habits of the Red-cockaded Woodpecker, a protect-
ed endangered species. She was also an expert in poop! (Oh, they call that “scat,” but it is really animal dung). Anyhow, upon spotting some “scat,” she would get down on her hands and knees, and, using her pen, identify the animal despositor by “dissecting” the specimen, much to the delight of the several children who joined the hike! That did not spoil our lunch, however. We “chowed down” at the ever-popular Southside Café in Slidell before heading back to DH in a food coma. On Saturday, Dec. 7, we made a return trip to the Gulf Islands National Seashore National Park near Ocean Springs. This beautiful park has it all: woodland trails and waterfront piers … a Geaux Hiking Club favorite. We finished up with a luscious Greek lunch at the Country Gentleman (oooh, that baklava was the bomb!) Now, on to the new year and a reminder that Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 6 p.m. in the Lakeview Room at the Diamondhead Country Club we’ll meet to plan upcoming hikes and activities. Remember, there are no fees to be a member of Geaux Hiking; everyone is welcome; you do not have to be a resident of Diamondhead; all ages and abilities are welcome. Come and bring your ideas! Next, we’ll hike on Saturday, Jan. 11 in Chalmette
at the National Battlefield, site of the 1815 Battle of New Orleans, followed by lunch at Rocky & Carlo’s. Carpool will form a bit before 8 a.m. in the DH parking lot. Then, on Thursday, Jan. 23, we’ll carpool a bit before 8 a.m. from the DH Country Club parking lot to New Orleans and the acclaimed WW2 Museum, which encompasses five buildings and provides a riveting retelling of America’s involvement and ultimate triumph over Nazi and Japanese foes. We need at least 10 participants to get the Senior Group Rate of $21.93 (regular adult rate is $28.50/seniors $24.50) Watch the DH Residents Facebook Page or our DH Geaux Hiking Facebook Page (contact the administrator to get access, if needed) for up-to-date info on our activities. Because the deadline for this article was before the Annual meeting and while our webmaster was on a 30-day cruise, I do not know who the DMGA officers are for 2020 and who topped the winnings list in 2019. That info will be published in the February 2020 article. In the two times the

On a cold, wet day 12 players played the MIXED BAG format where Frank Morrow, Bill Balckwood, Dennis Lauman and Jim Sherrouse led the scoring with a -22 followed closely by John Benus, Warren Alexander, Art Burgoyne and Ron Rech with a -1. On another cold, wet day with 11 players playing 2BEST BALLS, the team of Tom O’Connell, Marion Rotolo, Joe Murray and our traditional Ghost (Ron Rech) led the scoring with a -24 followed closely by Chuck Ingraham, Warren Alexander, Ron Rech and Val Miller with a -22. systems used worldwide, joined to form the World Handicap System. The final product came after seven years of work. The new system starts Jan. 1. The idea is that the new system will represent demonstrated ability replacing the intent to allocate stokes based on potential ability. Basically, the new system takes a harder look at past performance rather than how well a golfer might play in the future. This is an attempt to make handicapping systems consistent around the world. The GHIN system will do the calculations. Changes include that the Handicap Index will be based off the best 8 scores out of the past 20 instead of the best 10 out of the last 20. Another change is that the maximum hole score for handicap purposes will be limited to the net double bogey (par +2 + any handicap strokes received). A scratch golfer is limited to a double bogey at max. Another change is that handicaps will be updated
the day after the score is posted. This replaces the bi-weekly method used in the U.S. Event operators will have to designate a specific date for handicapping purposes. The system will account for abnormal playing conditions, limit extreme upward movement of an index (largely to help prevent sandbagging) and reduce a handicap when an exceptional score is posted. There some other minor tweaks. I have not heard how often the GHIN system will send you an email with your updated Handicap Index.

Nov. 7 we had the monthly Trophy Day and this month it was based on Gross Score. The winner overall was Pat Ellis with a score of 91. The first flight winner was a tie, Linda Metz and Jean Hudgins with a score of 99. The second flight winner was Lottie Williams with a score of 99. The second
flight 2nd place was a tie, Cathy Weber and Marian Wideman with a score of 101. Jean Hudgins had a birdie. Cathy Weber had a chip-in. Closest to the Pin were Terry Woolbright on #4, Jeanne Hudgins on #7 and #17, Georgeann Luxion on #13. Nov. 14 was cancelled because of weather. Nov. 21 we had a fun filled Turkey Tournament. This is where everyone has their own Turkey sign and the turkey is planted when you get to your maximum strokes. The turkey that lands as furthest is the winner. In the first flight 1st place was Amy Swint, 2nd place was Jodi Crosby, 3rd place was Betty Bowen. In the second flight 1st place was Becky Stritzel, 2nd place was Patty Hourin, 3rd place was Margaret Papaleo. In the third flight 1st place was Marian Wideman, 2nd place was Cathy Weber, 3rd place was Judy Amox. Betty Bowen got a birdie. Chip-ins were made by Dianne Ackerman and

This month, of course, we all start getting busy with preparations for the approaching holidays. And the weather was quick to remind us of the changing seasons bringing rainy days and some colder weather. As reported earlier, the first week of our Club
Championship had to be cancelled because of rain. Therefore, the Champion had to be determined from only nine holes of play. We also gave awards for Longest Drive and Closest-tothe-Pin. Fortunately, Nov. 5 proved to be a beautiful day for golf. And our winners were: RED Tee Club Champion was none other than Therese Mauterer with a gross score of 46. Not very surprising as she has been playing great golf all season. Our Black Tee Club
Our Third Flight winners were: 1st Place — Renie Dack, 2nd Place — Kathy Jones, and 3rd Place — Mary Murray. And our winning Scramble Teams were: First Place Team of Sylvia Corban, Kitty Gregoire, Therese Mauterer and a ghost. For Second Place honors we discovered three teams with the same score. Therefore, the winning

Sports CONTINUED, FROM PAGE 26 Thanksgiving appropriately found us playing our Turkey Day competition. When you play this game, you are given a laminated picture of a Turkey. On it is the score you should be able to shoot based on your handicap. The goal is to shoot at least the same
score as posted on the Turkey or to better that score. Twenty-three of our gals played but only two managed to shoot their Turkey: Carol Wyrosdick shot a 58 — her Turkey goal was to shoot 62. And Pat VanDervort’s goal was to shoot 52. She shot 51!
We also awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each flight as well as Longest Drive and Closest-to-the Pin. In the First Flight Pat VanDervort took first place while Therese Mauterer and Fran Smith tied for second place. While in the Second
Flight Judi Brannan and Betsy Syons tied for first place and Dinah Knoblock and Nancy Sislow tied for second place. In the Third Flight Carol Wyrosdick walked off with first place, Mary Mizell took second place and Patti Black and Charlene Smuck tied for
third place. When it came to Longest Drive, Therese Mauterer took the honors in the First Flight, Nancy Sislow grabbed it in the Second Flight, Mary Craig Murray came away with it in the Third Flight while Carol Laux got the award fro the
Black Tees group. Closest-to-the-Pin honors when to Kathie Pierson in the First Flight and unfortunately, no one came close the pin in either the second or third flights. Congratulations to all of our winners. Job well done, gals.
