K
rewe of Diamondhead’s annual Mardi Gras parade is Saturday, February 22 at noon in Diamondhead. Theme this year is “The British Invasion” referring to the music. Parade route begins at St. Thomas Episcopal church, travels south on Gex Drive to the shopping center. At the fire station, the route turns right and progresses to the Country Club where it disbands. There are ample places to park and stand along the way that are not private property. This is a family friendly, child-oriented parade. The Krewe of Diamondhead is the longest running Mardi Krewe in Diamondhead and is in its 45th year. For more information contact David Sykes, Parade Lt., at (949) 293-6148.

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 7 2020
BUSINESS PRESIDENT’S LETTER Happy Mardi Gras from your POA board! The Mardi Gras celebrations are in full swing in Diamondhead, leading up to our annual Krewe of Diamondhead Mardi Gras parade rolling at noon on Feb. 22. The various Diamondhead krewes have been keeping our facilities fully booked. We’ve hosted seven krewe balls just in January and February! In addition to the krewe events, the facilities have been packed with seasonal events like Puttin’ on the Ritz, which featured Al “Carnival Time” Johnson performing his famous Mardi Gras songs. The event reviews are excellent, and business is exceptionally robust. Hats off to Hoppy Smith, Chris Rahaim, and all our dedicated country club staff. Your team is working very hard to keep quality high and costs low, so we can all continue enjoying this vital community asset for years to come. I would also like to recognize Ginger Necaise for her exceptional service in 2019. Being the front line for covenants enforcement is the toughest job in Diamondhead. Ginger has handled her challenging task with grace, charm, and efficiency. We are grateful for her service to our community. In 2019, Ginger handled 672 violations with a 97% compliance rate! Thank you, Ginger, for all your hard
work and dedication. I want to remind everyone that you can set up your payments online. We are incredibly pleased with our online payment participation rate, and we want everyone to take advantage of this service. Be sure to visit https://hwtreasury.billeriq.com/ebpp/ Diamondhead/ and follow the directions to get started. When registering,
please put three 000’s before your membership number. Our ongoing collection efforts of member dues continue to be healthy. As of January 10, 2019, we have received 1,267 payments for past due accounts, resulting in more than $454,576.75 collected. Thanks to our collections team for your efforts. Upcoming events of

Gifts of Love Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and we are drawn to thinking about our loved ones ... not just sweethearts, but friends and relatives who we feel affection for.
When purchasing candy and flowers and cards, consider also sending a donation to the SPCA of Diamondhead in honor of a loved one. We will send a Valentine to the person you are remembering and at the same time you will be showing love for the many dogs and cats in the Diamondhead community, which the SPCA helps on a daily basis. Each day we work to save all the poor, helpless, innocent animals we possibly can. Recently on a weekend when Animal Control and the Animal Shelter was closed, a six-week old Dalmation mix puppy was turned over to us. She had been found abandoned on the side of the road. We found a forever home for her and made sure she was given proper medical attention, vaccinated, nurtured and most-

But, every single one of them have one characteristic in common. It’s something that us humans usually have a really hard time with ... they have the ability to forgive and to learn to trust again. They seem to know that they have been given a second chance in life and they are forever grateful. Rescue animals may come a little bruised with broken spirits, but once you open your home and your heart to them, they will reward you with unconditional love and undying faithfulness. Please help us help these animals. You might consider donating in honor of a loved one, in memory of a person, or a companion animal. You could give us a list of friends or relatives and their birthday dates for the year with your donation and we will send them a card arriving for their special day. All donations are tax-deductible, and all honorees will receive notification of your gift. Many thanks again to everyone who sent us a “Year End Donation.” Also, a special shout out to Betty Maxwell and her friends who participated in the 15th Annual SPCA Fundraiser. They generously donated to the SPCA and the Animal Shelter. The Hancock Animal shelter is featuring Russell, a beautiful six-month-old Domestic Short Hair. 15TH ANNUAL HOMELESS VETERAN COAT AND BLANKET DRIVE, AND SPCA OF DIAMONDHEAD FUNDRAISER WAS A HUGE SUCCESS AGAIN THIS YEAR! By Betty Maxwell
First, I would like to thank Broker Jon Ritten along with RE/MAX Coast Delta Realty for allowing me to use the office as the drop off point for these two wonderful projects. The office staff was wonderful in making their own donations and accepting donations from others. A huge thanks to VFW Post 2880 members Reid Walker and David Motz. These two gentlemen have collected these items for me over several years and made deliveries for me. They collected the many many coats, blankets, hats,
gloves, scarves, socks, shoes, sweaters, and so much more for male and female homeless veterans in not only Hancock County, but into Harrison by the VA Hospital as well. Some items also went to Kings Kitchen in Bay St Louis for our local homeless. We had to bag everything due to it raining the day they picked up items. Thanks to the wonderful ladies of Diamondhead who once again hand knitted caps and scarves for this event. Thanks to so many wonderful local people who are selfless in their contributions. We all made a big difference in a lot of lives for which I am extremely grateful. On the SPCA side of this annual fundraiser, we collected just shy of $1,800, towels and blankets, food bowls, bedding, and
lots and lots of cat and dog food, kitty litter, and treats. All monies were given to the SPCA of Diamondhead to assist in their spay and neuter voucher program. Bedding, and all of the supplies and most of the food went to the Hancock County Animal Shelter on Texas Flat Road, and some food went to the Hancock County Food Pantry. Many people love pets, and struggle to feed themselves yet alone their pets. When you make a donation to the Food Pantry please remember pets of these nice people. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for anything and everything that you do to assist in providing for the homeless Veterans, and many dogs and cats in our community. I cannot do this alone, and with the help of
RE/MAX, VFW Post 2880, and all of you kind and generous folks, we can and do make a difference in many lives. My wish for all of you is a happy, healthy, and safe 2020. I hope I can count on you throughout the year, but especially November 15 through December 15 for my 16th Annual fundraiser. One more vital thing. Please spay or neuter your pets to help control the pet population. If you need assistance with spaying or neutering your pet, please contact the SPCA of Diamondhead for a voucher. This will help to eliminate those poor sweet homeless pets on our streets and roadways. We can control this if we all work together!

The theme for the flower show this year is “Downton Abbey.” This will be an interesting theme to interpret because the time frame for the British TV series is post WWI, the Roaring Twenties. Put your imagination in gear and sign up to create a design for the show. This year the show will also include Botanical Arts. This is a new division
that includes art/craft types of projects such as decorated hats, coffee mugs, collages and photography. It’s another way to express your creativity. The garden club meets the third Wednesday of every month, September through May. All are welcome. Contact: Brierley Acker, (228) 255-2697

Chuck Ingraham, the master of ceremonies for the evening, kicked off the festivities with a little playful fun. The balls romantic theme was a fitting for newlyweds, King Ken and Queen Janie Dropco. Queen Janie wore her breathtaking wedding dress. Her gown had a light peach embellished bodice with a full tulle skirt that sparkled with silvery tones when King Ken spun her around on the dance floor. “Some Enchanted Evening” by the Temptations played while the newly coronated couple lead their loyal subjects with a first dance. Earlier in the evening, King Ken shared the story of how he met his Queen on a Topless ride with the Topless Club, a convertible enthusiast group in Diamondhead. Queen Janie, a
New Orleans native, listened on as her husband addressed his subjects with the heartfelt anecdote. This fairytale coronation of the Krewe of Kamehameha 2020 royalty was truly a magical night filled with the music stylings of Johnny Fung, delicious food, and wonderful libations. Alas, many fairytales end with a coronation of a King and Queen, but don’t fret fair readers. King Ken and Queen Janie will continue their story with a Mardi Gras ball at the Diamondhead Country Club on Feb. 8, 2020. Until then, farewell for now from the kingdom of Diamondhead, and may all your carnival events be enchanting.

DH GEAUX HIKING CLUB The DH Geaux Hiking Club continues our tradition of exploring cool places, getting some exercise, learning something new, and, of course, exploring a new restaurant or two (natch!) Can’t leave 2019 behind without reminiscing a bit, however, because our trip to Bellingrath to see the home and magnificently lighted garden was one we’ll remember for a long time. We arrived mid-afternoon, which allowed us to snag parking spots right up front and which later proved to be a benefit. The tour of the 15-room mansion was fascinating as it displays beautiful antiques, silver, porcelain and all of the furnishings just as they were used when Walter and Bessie Bellingrath (he had the Coca-Cola Bottling franchise) lived there. It was also interesting that amongst the home’s unique features are central
heating and cooling, ultramodern lavatories in a variety of colors (eg. lilac, pink, green, but NOT white), and gas and electric ranges plus large capacity refrigerators and freezers in the kitchen powered by a gigantic generator … all of this in the “wilds” of primitive 1935 Alabama! The house also has five dining rooms of various sizes to accommodate the large number of family and friends who visited. We then enjoyed the freshly prepared dinner of the day and the soupsandwich-salad combinations served in the on-site café before venturing out into the spectacular gardens at dusk. As it grew darker, we oohed and ahhhed at tableaux after tableaux constructed of millions of lights. From Japanese pagodas to alligators to mermaids to the Coca-Cola polar bears, we were joined by a growing crowd of visitors as we strolled past imaginative scenes set amongst the trees, flowers, shrubs and ponds. As we headed for home driving along the country lane to the freeway (and with visions of sugar-plums dancing in our heads), we were equally astounded at the several miles of bumper to bumper vehicles on their way INTO the Bellingrath parking lot. We said goodbye to December and 2019 with a potluck and caroling party. We may not have “sounded purty but we shore were
loud” as we “decked the halls” and “jingled all the way,” serenading the neighbors (who were probably happy to hear “Silent Night”… whew!... when it finally got dark.) Our January planning meeting kicked off the 2020 season with 18 people in attendance — seven of those were newbies! Welcome to all new and returning Geaux Hikers! Now, as we “roll” into Mardi Gras season, our next planning meeting will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. in the Lakeview Room at the Diamondhead Country Club. There are no dues to join the DH Geaux Hiking Club. You do not have to be a resident of Diamondhead and all ages and abilities are welcome. Where should we go and what shall we do in March? Come to the meeting and bring your suggestions. Our February hikes include the Crosby Arboretum in Picayune, MS. on Feb. 12, when the $5 entrance fee gives you access to miles of trails to hike and acres of flora and fauna to discover. Lunch follows at Middendorf’s in Manchac, LA (yeah, well, we are a hiking AND eating club, um-hum YUM!). Then, before we LEAP ahead, we’ll make good use of that extra day — Saturday, Feb. 29 — to visit Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain just west of Sli-
dell, LA. We’ll check out a free open house and guided tour of Bayou Gardens (1935-1956), workshops and presentations … imagine over 400 varieties of camellias and azaleas. Lunch on our way back to D’Head will be at the legendary Southside Café in Slidell. Keep up with us from your couch on our Facebook page: DH Geaux Hiking (contact the administrator for access); or the Diamondhead Residents Facebook page. Sooo… if you’ve been feeling a little guilty about that resolution to get more exercise, get out here … make friends … learn something new … go somewhere you’ve never been … Geaux Hiking!

The Top Fifteen money winners in 2019 were Gene Demedicis, Tom O’Connell, Pat Jarrell, Frank Moreau, Bill Vandervort, Joe Murray, Ron Rech, Al Mast, Ernie Knobloch, Don Perkins, Renny Pangan, Dennis Lauman, Tyrone Sartin, John Benus, and Warren Alexander. If you know these players, you realize that there’s a wide range of abilities, which shows that the formats allow for various winners. In the Closest to the Pin Competition, the Top Fifteen were Warren Morgan, Tom O’Connell, John Bunce, Bill Vandervort, Warren Alexander, Billy Stroud, Pat Jarrell, Paul Cain, Chuck Ingraham, Berni Breen, Joe Murray, Harold Garrett, Renny Pangan, Art Burgone, and Frank Morrow. An interesting observation is that 7 of the guys appear on both lists. Obviously, the more often you play, the better chance of winning money you have. The DMGA officers for 2020 are Joe Murray (President), Glen Conover (VP), Art Burgoyne (Sec/Treas & Webmaster)), Don Perkins (Dir), Ton O’Connell (Dir), Bill Vandervort (Dir), Marion Rotolo (Dir), Dennis Laumann (Dir) and Ernie Knobloch (Publicity). A special thanks to Art Burgoyne for stepping forward to handle the position of
Secretary/Treasurer and Webmaster. A very special thanks to Warren Morgan for handling the money and the website for the past few years. The MIXED BAG format was played twice since the last article. The best posted score of -34 was shot by Gene Demedicis, Bill Roofner, Robert Roth and a Ghost followed by Dick Armstrong, Dick Brown, Pat Jarrell and Frank Morrow with -30. Third place was a tie when both teams recorded a -29. The two teams included Bob Gregoire, Ronnie James, Larry McKay, and Tony Palmature plus bill Blackwood, Joe Murrray, Rennie Pangan and Jim Sherrouse,. The POINTS format was also played twice and, believe it or not, four (4) teams shot +17 to lead the way. The teams were John Benus, Glen Conover, Frank Morrow and Don Perkins plus Warren Alexander, Dick Brown, Chuck Ingraham and Tom O’Connell plus Warren Alexander, Dick Armstrong, John Benus and Marshall Brown plus Ron Rech, Gene Demedicis, Chuck Ingraham and Kenny Pullen. Obviously you might want to play with John Benus and/ or Warren Alexander when this format is used since they won both times. In the ABCD format, which was played once on a chilly, windy day, the team of Joe Murray, Tom O’Connell, Marion Rotolo and a Ghost led the way

In the CTP competition, John Bunce won 3 times on the same day while Val Miller won twice on the same day. On one Wednesday played on the Pine course with a small number of players, no one hit the green on #13. That’s the first time that has happened in awhile. If putting is letting you down, you might want to consider purchasing a golf ball from Nissan that will find the hole every time, no matter how you stroke it. It’s called the ProPilot and is designed to show off technology that will help guide cars onto highways semi autonomously. The ball has sensors and a small motor allowing it to find the hole like a heat seeking missile. The problem is that the ball also requires the presence of an overhead camera attached to a drone. Picture yourself using the ball to sink a 50-foot putt to win a match! No price was included in the public information about this ball.
