VOL. 32, NO. 8
Congratulations to the 2020 Diamondhead Property Owners Association Officers and Board Members ELECTION RESULTS
Ernie Knobloch, President
Gerald Gillen, Vice President
Karen Rayner, Treasurer
Nancy Sislow, Secretary
The results of the July 18, 2020, Diamondhead Country Club & POA election of directors and officers are as follows. The winner is in bold type.
PRESIDENT Ernie Knobloch - 642 Ricky Sheppard - 405
VICE PRESIDENT Gerald Gillen - 720 Craig Harvey - 296 Lloyd Ramirez, Jr., Director
Ronald James, Director
Teresa Ertel, Director
Dennis Tauzin, Director
The new officers and directors join Bob Marthouse, Ex-Officio, and Directors Stewart Nutting and Gary Becker. Greetings again! I want to take this opportunity to congratulate our new President and our new board on their victories in the 2020 POA election. I wish this election could have been smoother, but these are unusual times. With the elections out of the way, I know our new board members are excited and eager to take on the challenges we face as an organization and as a vibrant community.I’m confident our officers and directors understand that they signed up for a thankless job, yet still, here they are, ready to serve. I know they know they will be under the microscope and subject to constant scrutiny and will become the subjects of relentless criticism on social media. Despite these well-
understood realities, your new board members signed up for this all-consuming, thankless, and demanding task. There is no reward or compensation for doing this job. Board members get no benefits, no discounts, and no special treatment. They spend countless hours working late and attending meetings. They research their ideas and talk to members at all hours of the day and weekends. They are doing this for you. Please don’t forget this as you watch them work and judge their efforts. While criticism is necessary, so is respect on both sides. Our POA and our community are in transition. While the POA is in excellent condition by any measure, our future is uncertain. There
is only so much any board can do to sustain the organization. The rest is up to YOU. Now more than ever, it is vital that our community comes together to preserve all the things that make Diamondhead special. We need your ideas. We need your engagement and participation. At the end of the day, the POA is you. It’s both made for you and by you. It is the backbone of the community and the glue that holds us together. Please join me in welcoming our new officers and directors. I’m looking forward to working with everyone and building relationships that will last a lifetime. I’m looking forward to continuing to work for you in my new role as Ex-Officio. Bob Marthouse

Ambitious undertakings already underway for Diamondhead’s new POA Board A message from Ernie Knobloch, President of Diamondhead Property Owners Association
This is being written on Sunday, July 19, 2020, the day after the recent POA election. The new POA Board Members thank everyone for their support in electing this Board. We pledge to operate in a manner so that you can know what decisions are being made on a timely basis. Executive Session will be used ONLY to deal with personnel and legal issues.
To start, we’ve asked the GM, attorney and comptroller for an immediate overview of the financial situation of the POA, the organizational chart of the POA, a meeting with the GM and attorney to provide an update on all active POA lawsuits, a copy of the Policies and Procedures Manual, a copy of any lobbying contracts the POA has, where non-harassment policy signs are posted, a copy of the POA’s Disaster Management Plan, an up-
date on the grant to dredge the canals on the southside, an update on the fuel tank situation at the airport, implementation of email addresses for all new Board members, the ability to review the official minutes from the last two years, the final cost of the new patio project, a list of the past Violations Compliance Committee members, an explanation of who is authorized to send out POA Eblasts, an overview of the RV park and in-
vestigate the possibility of televising the POA Board meetings. By the time you read this, we will have decided on the Board meeting dates for the next two years, the agenda and format for meetings, hopefully have approved the use of email to approve minutes so that up-todate minutes can be in every edition of the DH News, have met with all managers to know what their individual responsibilities are at this time, have
begun the process for developing the budget for the 2021 budget year, have formed committees to review how the POA operates every amenity, etc. As you can see, we have ambitious undertakings in a short period of time. We have some challenging times ahead, but if we work together for the betterment of our entire community, we can succeed. Thanks. Ernie Knobloch

EAST HANCOCK LIBRARY By Mary Gobert
The dog days of summer are here and it’s too hot to do anything but get lost in a book or DVD! Library personnel are working behind the scenes to make that possible as the mandated closure continues. The number of patrons who take advantage of the goods and services at our branch continues to grow, underscoring their effort and the corresponding benefit to the community. Congrats, East Hancock! You can still get physical items from the library. The currier service has resumed between branches, so you can pick up any book within the system at the East Hancock site. Pickups are available at the book drop drive through from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and until 3
p.m. on Saturdays. Online, you can also dive into a very nice collection of Ebooks and audiobooks. Titles for all ages are available with your library card. Don’t have a library card yet? At the main library website you can access audiobooks and ebooks courtesy of the “Tumble Books” link. Win/ win! Another great resource, Brainfuse, is also available through the library website. This is a live tutoring platform. Anyone from homeschoolers to seniors can benefit from such a fantastic, free option. We head into August missing many things we enjoyed at the library: Make and Create, painting lessons, Book Club, Line Dancing, Strength and Flexibility class, Story Time, computer access, and so much more. As we continue to make our way slowly back to all those things, hopefully soon… I’ll see you at the library!
2020 “BLESSING OF THE CLASSICS” VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Officials with Cruisin The Coast have notified the City of Diamondhead that this year's event is on schedule for October. If you would like to join in the fun, there will be 10 % work and 90% fun. The blessing event cannot take place without all the volunteers offering their time to welcome the cruisers in seeing more than just sun and sand, but a beautiful city inhabited by the great citizens who reside here. Please reply duf993@gmail.com if you wish to join in the fun. Include your shirt size and if you have a golf cart at your disposal. “BUDDIES” UPDATE By Toni Grey
In the May newsletter, we talked about the stray dogs who have been roaming Diamondhead since January. On Monday, July 6, a Good Samaritan resident noticed that the black and white dog was near her property but was struggling to walk on three legs. She carefully approached him, hoping that he was not injured to the point that he would bite her. He was in so much pain that his soulful brown eyes told her he was asking for help. He allowed her to pick him up (all 58 pounds of him) and take

While there, Dr. Parker, removed ticks, cleaned his ears and cut his nails. When checking his chip, she discovered his name was Dino. The Good Samaritan had just been laid off from her job due to Covid, but she took care of the bill. About an hour after being released, I called the Vet about a different patient and was told about Dino. Subsequently, I contacted the Good Samaritan and told her that the SPCA would reimburse her for what she paid. Two days later, she called me at about 6:00 a.m. and was extremely concerned about Dino. So, we took him to the Gulf Coast Veterinary Emergency Hospital in Biloxi since they are opened 24/7. Dr. Jeff Sutton who owns the Emergency Hospital with
his wife, Dr. Jennifer Sutton and who live in Diamondhead, X-rayed Dino which indicated there were no fractures. Dino had multiple lacerations which had become infected and was causing the severe swelling. Dr. Sutton anesthetized Dino and placed six ports in his leg so the fluid could drain. While he was under, Dr. Sutton neutered Dino. He also treated him for a urinary tract infection. At the time of writing this article, Dino was recovering well and had a follow-up appointment scheduled. On the subject of neutering, Dino’s hormones were so active that while on the run, he dug a hole under a resident’s fence and impregnated a Dalmatian who recently gave birth to 12 puppies. As soon as the puppies are weened, they will need homes. If anyone is interested in adopting one of Dino’s puppies please contact Matthew Christopher Pesta on Facebook. In addition, if anyone is

are trying to capture Dino’s buddy, “The Hound”. Hopefully, we can get him the help he needs, also. We will keep you posted. The SPCA appreciates any donation you can afford to make to help us pay the Vet bills for Dino. We receive calls about
lost pets frequently. The latest heart-wrenching call came from a Bay St. Louis resident whose Husky has been lost for a while now. She has placed posters all over the County and has not had any luck until recently someone told her
they spotted a dog who looked like hers here in Diamondhead. If anyone has seen her dog, named Zella, please contact Brooke at (720) 400-1965. She is offering a generous reward for Zella’s return.

THE KREWE OF DIAMONDHEAD ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING The Krewe of Diamondhead held their annual membership meeting on Sunday, June 28th at The Lazy Gator Sports Bar and Steamer in Diamondhead, MS. The members enjoyed the chance to visit and discuss changes and updates to the Krewe, along with recognizing those members who helped out throughout the season. New Bylaws changes and ballots were mailed to the members, prior to the meeting. Some members mailed ballots in early, while others chose to vote the day of the event. The members voted to adopt the Bylaws changes, which
will go into effect immediately. One notable change in the Bylaws was that of creation of the Membership Director. As the Krewe has grown in membership over the last few years, it was recognized that this new director would be a much-needed position. The Membership Director will serve as a liaison from the membership to the board of directors with the role of encouraging member satisfaction, retention and participation. The members also elected a new Board of Directors, which will serve a two-year term. Those elected were Hoppy Smith, President; Sandy Hatem, Vice President; Jamie Morgan, Secretary; Dick Brown, Treasurer; David Sykes, Captain; Steph Hardesty, Membership Director; Sarah Schafer, Social Director; Renee Kirschenbaum, Publicity Director and Sara Garcia, Parade Director. The next event for the Krewe will be August 15, 2020 and will celebrate their theme from Mardi Gras, The British Invasion. The Krewe of Diamondhead is incorporated as a not for profit corporation under the laws of the State of Mississippi. The Krewe is formed as a civic body for social purposes and Mardi Gras entertainment.

DIAMONDHEAD WINE CLUB By Lou Ertel & Marshall Kyger
WINE CLUB RETURNS THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 17TH
The Diamondhead Wine Club is dedicated to the exploration and enjoyment of wine. At each monthly tasting, we sample at least 6 different wines and learn a little about their history and origins. The Club is open to any who are interested in enjoying and learning about wine. Join us at our upcoming tastings: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17TH, MERITAGE (aka BLENDS), 7:00 P.M. at the Club French wines have almost always been blends of more than one grape varietals. In many other countries, winemakers often began by offering varietals made from a single type of grape, e.g. Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, however, a vast majority of wines are blends made from multiple grape varieties. Some of these blends are proprietary (secret) while others prominently display their composition on their labels. Come join us as we see what we can find. Cost is $35 for DWC members and $45 for guests. Please make reservations by mailing your check payable to DWC to P. O. Box 6523, Diamondhead, MS 39525 or by emailing Lou at louertel@aol.com or Marshall at mekygs@cableone.net.

Clubs CONTINUED, FROM PAGE 13 and you’re wearing your mask and your glasses are fogging up and, well, it’s just darn HOT! But that hasn’t stopped our intrepid hikers! We’ve launched ourselves across the BSL Bridge to enjoy impressive vistas (and, yup, add four miles to our steps tally, and… OMG are you really counting…?). Recommended for early AM or late-day walkers by Kim…yep, she’s a hardcharger...) And don’t forget the beach—it’s been cleared of all of the debris brought in by Cristobal--so put on your hat and sun screen and get down there and do some “beach-combing”. Ya never know what was “left behind…” And please let us know what “treasures” you find by posting photos of them on our Facebook

Johnnie reported that he recently returned to hike the “over-themarsh boardwalk” on the Boy Scout Road followed by lunch on the upstairs deck at Rip's on the waterfront in Old Town Mandeville while enjoying cooling lake breezes. “Life is goooodd.” (and he prob’ly enjoyed one or two of those 25-cent martinis… just sayin’…) This spot has the DH Geaux Hiking Club ”Seal of Approval!” Annnd on a previous hike it was also the scene of the memorable $100 dollar bill blowin’ in the wind incident. SPORTS DIAMONDHEAD GOLF Chris Altese, PGA Director of Golf
The DCC Pine and Cardinal golf courses are in beautiful condition and a joy to play. We hope to see many of you out on the golf course this month. Be sure to like the Diamondhead Country Club Facebook page and Instagram page to keep current on happenings and specials. Our Summer Junior Golf Clinic was held the week of July 13 – 16. Our golf professional staff does a great job introducing the game to these youth golfers. It is very exciting to watch Diamondhead Country Club grow the game. If you ever wonder about the future of golf just come watch how much fun these juniors are having while learning this sport that you can play for a lifetime. Even though these juniors are learning at an early age it is never too late to take up the game. Let us know if we can help you pursue learning how to play. All of our junior golfers continue to impress. Many of our juniors competed the last week of July in the Mississippi Junior Amateur Championship held at Northwood Country Club in Meridian and we are looking forward to see how they fared. Karstyn Altese is slated to play again in the US Kids Golf World Championships being held in Pinehurst, North Carolina this month. The U.S. Kids Golf World Championship is the largest and most prestigious events in the
world of its kind. A threeday tournament that attracts nearly 1,500 participants from across the United States and more than 30 countries abroad. To receive an invitation, junior golfers must complete the season as a top player in their age category and shoot the minimum score twice during the season as required by the US Kids Golf World Championship committee. Having juniors qualify for the World Championships from one club 5 years in a row is an amazing accomplishment. Congratulations to all of our winners in the Magnolia Classic! Hard to beat celebrating while competing in a fun golf event. 44 teams took to the links on Saturday, July 4th. After all of the dust settled and all of the low scores were posted, the overall champions were determined…Jerry Jones and Dan Garrison. Jerry and Dan shot an incredible score of 59 to take home the title. The Big Kahuna Golf Classic was held on July 11 & 12. 68 golfers battled the golf course and the heat. We were very excited to see that the ladies’ division continues to grow in size. Thanks to all that played and to all that helped raise funds for the Marine Corps League, our Big Kahuna charity. Be sure to follow Diamondhead Marine Corps League Det 1454 on facebook to see how they are helping veterans in need across our area. Big Kahuna final results will be posted next month.

As always, let us know how we can help.
DMGA By Ernie Knobloch
For the first time in the last couple of months we’ve been able to play 4 times in the month. In the PEERSPOINTS format, the team of Charles Cangeosi, AJ Dilly, Ron Rech and Jim Sherrouse led the scoring with a team score of +28, 9 points higher than the secondplace team. Rech shot an outstanding +12, Cangelosi +9 and Sherrouse +6 . That’s one heck of an example of team scoring. Second place was won by Paul Cain, Warren Morgan,
Tom O’Connell and Don Perkins with a +19. Congratulations to Paul Cain for making an eagle on #2 of the Cardinal. In a Saturday play date using the ABCD 2 Best Ball format, the team of Lenny Alphonso, John Bunce, Joe Murray and Renny Pangan recorded a score of +34 followed closely by Dick Brown, Pat Jarrell, Lee Kormandy and Warren Morgan with a +32. Once again, those are excellent team scores. The individual POINTS format was won by Ron James, Warren Morgan, Frank Morrow and Ron Rech with a +11 followed closely by John Bunce, Don Perkins, Billy Rushing and
Jim Shoemaker with + 10. Billy Rushing recorded an individual score of +8 followed by Art Brugoyne with a +7. On a wet Wednesday, the Scramble format was played and the team of Lenny Alphonso, Berni Breen, Frank Morrow and Jim Shoemaker led the scoring followed by David Barbato, Dennis Laumann, Warren Alexander, John Benus, Art Burgoyne and Al Mast when both teams recorded a – 7. In the Closest to the Pin competition, John Bunce won 3 times, all on the same day (# 4, 7 and 17 of the Cardinal). I don’t recall anyone winning 3 times on the same day before. Paul Cain and Pat Jarrell each
won twice last month. The overall money leaders in mid-July are Lenny Alphonso, John Bunce, Ron Rech, AJ Dilly, Jim Sherrouse, Don Perkins, Warren Morgan, Renny Pangan and John Benus. The overall CTP winners are John Bunce with 4, while Tom O’Connell, Ernie Knobloch, Warren Alexander, and Art Burgoyne have 3 wins each. If you’re looking to find a refreshing, cold snack to use while playing in hot weather, consider the following. Buy a seedless watermelon and cut off both ends so that the melon will stand on an end.

Sports CONTINUED, FROM PAGE 23 Then cut off the green/ white rind. Next, cut the melon into small pieces and freeze 10-15 pieces in zip lock storage bags. Place the bags in the freezer and take a bag out when you’re going to play. If you keep the zip lock bags in an ice chest, the pieces will remain frozen most of the round and give you a really good snack that’s good for your hydration.

DWGAN GOLF NEWS FROM JUNE 2020 By Shirley Halterman
We now have spent more than three months fighting an unseen enemy called the COVID-19 virus. We still have been able to play golf whenever Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast summer weather permits as long as we take some precautions. We continue to stay 6ft. apart and whenever possible wear face masks. Actually these precautions are a small price to pay to keep from spreading this awful virus. On Tuesday, June 2nd, 31 gals showed up to play in a traditional Scramble. We played the front nine of the Cardinal Course. We had a 3-way tie for First Place. The following three teams all entered a score of 38: Sylvia Corbin, Toni Rossol & Ghost; Ann Nutting, Cheral Saak, Nancy Sislow and Carol Wyrosdick; and finally, Kathy Jones, Barbara Linville, Therese Mauterer and Rachel Stewart. Nancy Sislow had a Chip-In on Hole #3 and Judy Tauzin had one on Hole #8. Our play on Tuesday, June 9th, had to be canceled due to heavy rains that descended on us both Monday and Tuesday. Although it was not the first Tuesday of the month, we decided to play a “Trophy Day” format since it has been a while since we played that format. Twentyfour gals signed up to play. And, our winners were: Low Gross = Flight #1 Therese Mauterer, Flight #2
- Sandy Merdinyan, Flight #3 - Rachel Steward and Black Flight - Carol Wyrosdick. Low Net = Flight #1 Toni Rossol, Flight #2 Marlene Gossard, Flight #3 - Jerry Ingraham and Black Flight - Lenna Weisenhorn. Low Putts = 1st Flight - Toni Rossol (12), 2nd Flight Sandy Merdinyan (16), 3rd Flight - Judi Brannan (16) and Black Flight - Carol Wyrosdick (13). Longest Drive = Flight #1 - Therese Mauterer, Flight #2 - Susie Fontenot, Fight #3 - Rachel Stewart, and Black Flight Mary Craig. Closest to the Pin honors went to: Flight #1 - Therese Mauterer, Flight #2 - Fran Smith, Flight #3 - Marsha Roberts and Black Flight - Carol Wyrosdick. Ruthie O’Neill and Toni Rossol had ChipIns and Therese Mauterer had a Birdie on Hole #4. Sure looks like Therese and Carol W had a banner and profitable day. On Tuesday, June 23rd, we played a Two-Person Alternate Shot game. We were blessed with beautiful weather and great course conditions. What more could we ask for. In this format each member of the two-person team tees of on the first hole they play. After that each player plays the alternate shot. We played the back nine holes of the Pine Course. For Low Gross the 1st Place winning team consisted of Dinah Knobloch and Pat Vandervort. There was a tie for 2nd Place with both teams (Mary Mizell/Diana Moore) and (Therese Mauterer/ Lenna Weisenhorn) scoring
57. When it came to First Place Low Net - there was a 2-Way Tie with teams (Jerri Harris /Jerry Ingraham) and (Marsha Roberts/Fran Smith) each scoring 40. And, yet a 3-way tie for Second Place Low Net: All three of these teams scored 41: (Sue Hebert/Kathy Jones), (Sylvia Corban/ Nancy Sislow) and (Shirley Halterman/Rachel Stewart). The final Tuesday in June on the 30th we played a Shamble. Winners were based on net scores (handicaps were applied) with everyone teeing off from the Red Tees and the winners were: First Place Team: w/Net Score of 10 strokes under par = Sue Hebert, Jerry Ingraham, Dinah Knobloch and Toni Rossol. Second Place Team: w/Net Score of -9 strokes under par = Marlene Gossard, Kathy Jones, Diana Moore and Carol Wyrosdick. And finally, the Third Place Team: w/Net Score of -6 strokes under par = Judith Brannan, Therese Mauterer, Rachael Stewart and a Ghost. Also, Toni Rossol had Birdie on #4 while Therese Mauterer scored a Chip-In on #9. We also competed for who could score the least Putts. There was a 3-way Tie for this honor with Dinah Knobloch, Betsy Lyons and Mary Murray each posting only 15 Putts. Good job gals. We look forward to more fun golf in July when we hope to play our two-day Eclectic Tournament. In the meantime, stay vigilant and safe and hug your loved ones even if it must be from a distance.
