On the Duck Pond Update
Blue and white herons have been seen visiting the duck pond on Gex Dr.
VOL. 36, NO. 9
By T. L. Grey, President SPCA OF DIAMONDHEAD, INC.
Last year we wrote an article explaining that the SPCA acquired permission from the POA and a permit from MDWFP to trap turtles in the Duck Pond for the purpose of thinning the turtle population by relocating as many Snapping turtles as possible to the Jordan River. Fishermen have reported seeing a “killing field” at the edge of the woods and pond where they viewed partially eaten duck bodies without feet. The Turtle trappers have been out twice. On July 9, they picked up the traps and spotted a baby alligator in the pond. They could not pick it up because it would have been illegal to do so. We reported the sightings to Tom Koger’s office, General Manager of the POA. We not only worry about the ducks and geese being killed, but we have some very beautiful white and blue Herons, who visit the pond on a regular basis. And of course, alligators are predators of Herons. We are not sure where the alligator originated. It could have come from Rotten Bayou or it could have been dumped. We wonder if the baby alligator has a Mom and siblings and where they may be. Watch your children and pets when around the pond. Deadline for the October
issue of DHNEWS is Friday, Sept. 13
