BUSINESS PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The Diamondhead POA has been busy this past month with plenty of exciting initiatives to continue to move our community forward. In October, we held our annual Trunk or Treat for Diamondhead residents. We were also proud to announce that as part of our agreement with the Lazy Gator, POA members will enjoy 10% off of their bill when presenting their membership card. We are constantly thinking of ways to update our amenities to provide new offerings for our community, while also keeping our dues affordable for members. One of our biggest recent updates is that all members now have the option to pay their POA dues online. We will also begin utilizing multiple forms of electronic access to the amenities, including keypads, magnetic cards, and key fobs moving forward. This is a huge step in providing more efficiency for our residents. Our ongoing collection efforts of member dues continue, and as of October 15, 2019, we have received 1,085 payments for past due accounts this year, resulting in more than $403,290.87 collected To maintain a superior quality of life for Diamondhead residents, the POA enforces nearly 50 different sets of covenants. As many of you are aware, the first set of these covenants affecting a lot of

We want to make sure the covenant expirations don’t negativity impact such a special place that we have chosen to live, work and play so we’ve been in the process of exploring options to maintain our amenities moving forward. Attendees at our last Town Hall meeting were encouraged to participate in an informal “dot vote.” This vote helped us gather data to determine the

We asked the participating residents to do two things: 1) prioritize the amenities in terms of importance to each individual participant, and 2) if given the option to keep all of the amenities or eliminate them, vote their preference. PUBLIC SERVICES EAST HANCOCK LIBRARY By Mary Gobert

As we approach Thanksgiving, there is indeed much to be thankful for in our beautiful community. We are fortunate to have so many amenities and conveniences that we may easily use, including our local library. If you’re going to have company for the holiday, come to the library ahead of time to get books and DVDs for the kids and adults coming to visit. Come in even if you’re not! Before we get started, there are two announcements. Please note that the library will be closed on Monday, Nov. 11 for Veteran’s Day as well as Thursday, Nov. 28 and Friday, Nov. 29 for Thanksgiving. Also, line dancing will boot scoot away for the holidays. We will not meet in November or December. Check the January Newsletter for updates on future

classes. Story Hour for the preschool set will be on Friday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Come see us on Nov. 1, 8, 15, and 22. Ms. Lynn will read some great stories and crafts from Ms. Carol will be tons of fun! Strength and Flexibility continues to be very popular. Come see what it’s all about on Monday and/or Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. This month’s dates are Nov. 4, 5, 12, 18, 19, 25, and 26. That’s a lot of strength and flexibility coming your way! An Open Session of Make and Create for Grown-ups will be on Thursday, Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to noon. Bring a craft or project or come and use the supplies on hand to create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. On Monday, Nov. 18 from 2 to 4 p.m., our very talented local artist Penny Crawford will again give a free watercolor lesson. At this session you will create Christmas

cards like the one shown here. All supplies are provided. It’s gonna be so much fun! On Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. there will be a presentation on Semi Precious Stones of the World. If you are interested in learning more about this subject, we’ll see you there! Fun and Games will meet from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21. Come get your board game on! The Sit, Stay and Read monthly session will be from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22. Children have the chance to read to visiting pets associated with the program during this time. The kids love it, so let your child join in the fun! See you at the library!

DIAMONDHEAD GARDEN CLUB Live Oak Tree Registration Do you have a 100-year or older live oak tree on

your Diamondhead property or know of one on a nearby Diamondhead property? If so, Diamondhead Garden Club would like to register your tree with the Hancock County Historical Society. As of January 2018, there were almost 550 trees registered in Hancock County, 300 of which have been registered since Katrina. Trees considered for registration by the Garden Club must be located on privately owned property within the city of Diamondhead. The tree must have a circumference of 9.5 feet or greater, measured at 4.5 feet from the ground. If the tree forks at 4.5 feet, then measure the circumference at the smallest place below the fork. Needless to say, swellings, buttresses or large lumps have to be avoided. Please contact Linda Naron at (228) 255-8277 or lgnaron@att.net if you believe you have a tree at

or near this size on your property or know of one elsewhere in the city. The Tree Committee of Diamondhead Garden Club will arrange with you a

time to measure the tree and submit the necessary paperwork requesting an official measurement by Hancock County Historical Society.

Those of us who spend lots of time with more mature ladies and gentlemen know just how charming and lovable they are (particularly the animal kind!). November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month. Senior pets are often overlooked for their

younger four-legged friends, but these gems still have plenty of life and love to share. Older pets seem to be calmer and more familiar with basic training making them great additions to any family. Please consider adding a golden girl or guy to your home. We are featuring one of Thelma Hopkins’ foster cats, Oscar. He is a Domestic Short Hair orange tabby about 6 years old. His vaccinations are up to date and he is in very good health. Oscar doesn’t mind being left alone while you are at work or running errands. He doesn’t need a lot of attention, but he is sweet and likes to be petted. Our senior dog looking for a forever home is Sassy, who is a Dachshund mix, 10 years old and like many of us seniors, she is a tad overweight and a slow mover. She is very reserved and shy, but once she is comfortable with you, she loves to be petted and loved on and will seek you out for affection. Sassy would be best in a home without children and with low activity. Recently, yet another study was published in the Journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Out-

comes, dog ownership could be particularly beneficial to heart attack and stroke survivors who live alone. The study found that people who suffered a heart attack and lived alone were 33% less likely to die right after being released from the hospital if they owned a dog. Meanwhile, for stroke victims who were dog owners, the risk of death was 27% lower. Findings from a separate meta-analysis published in the same journal supported the study’s results. The Hancock Animal Shelter is a no-kill shelter and has many lovable pets available for adoption. Please check them out. Also, if you are not ready to adopt, consider volunteering at the shelter. If you are steady on your feet, perhaps you could take some time to walk some of the resident dogs or take them in the back ard and play ball with them. Or if your time is limited but you would like to make a difference, stop by and hand out some treats to the dogs in their crates. They would love the attention. DIAMONDHEAD LIONS CLUB City of Diamondhead Proclaims Nov. 2 as “White Cane Safety Day” In honor of the Diamondhead Lions Club “Walk for Sight” on Nov. 2, the Mayor of Diamondhead has proclaimed Nov. 2 as “White Cane Safety Day” in Diamondhead. White Cane Safety Day reminds the public that citizens who are blind or vision-impaired are to be given free access to sidewalks and street walkways as they move independently in their daily activities. The blind and vision-impaired are recognized by the use of a White Cane — clearly marked with a white body and red tip. State law requires all citizens to recognize this as a reminder to give the blind person the right-ofway while walking and to alert the person of any danger in their path. The signature charity of the Lions Clubs International is to aid the blind and vision-impaired, and the Diamondhead Lions Club sponsors the Walk for Sight as a fundraiser to provide any additional support required by the

Clubs CONTINUED, FROM PAGE 16 there was free admission to the Walter Anderson Museum, so we took advantage of that to learn about Walter, who was a real character as well as a prolific and talented painter, potter, and muralist whose works were inspired by his surroundings. The art and murals of this eccentric and fascinating artist can still be found in OS, and not just in the museum that bears his name. We also visited Shearwater Pottery, where Walter and his brothers, Peter and James (Mac), produced ceramics and earthenware pottery that is both functional and beautiful. Owned and operated by

Peter Anderson’s children, Shearwater carries on the family tradition producing art pottery, utilitarian ceramics, decorative tiles and figurines and other pottery. They are also fostering a ginormous raccoon in the pottery backyard! But we weren’t done, yet: we returned to OS for yet another art experience, starting with an introduction at the train depot (which doubles as the headquarters of the OS tourism bureau) followed by curated tours of Hillyer House and the Pink Rooster, two of the outstanding shops and galleries in OS. We then enjoyed an expertly guided exploration

“organic” architecture of Carroll Ishee, (there are several of his homes in OS) and the painting of Roger Rice, whose “outsider” art is inspired by verses from the Bible. But we didn’t forget our “roots”; we also spent a morning in search of the Mississippi Sandhill Crane at the Wildlife Preserve in Gautier as well as at the secondary location in OS. We were excited to see four of these rare magnificent birds take flight as we drove into the parking lot and walked several miles over easy trails, taking note of many colorful flowers and vistas. We even got up close and personal with the carnivorous Hooded Pitcher Plant, which attracts insects with nectar then traps and digests them (no foolin’). We also got back to DH to attend the Hummingbird Festival (and feel the beat of a tiny heart going 600 bps — Wow!) And, finally, we did a little retail therapy, doing a

pop-up trip to the nifty little thrift shop in DeLisle, where you pay only $1 for anything and everything you can fit into a plastic grocery bag (they even supply the bags). All proceeds go to the Knights of Columbus. Of course, we did end each of our excursions with a delicious lunch! Come to the next hike and we’ll give you our “expert” restaurant reviews and also tell you about the other things we did, but have no room to report on (heh heh heh, our little secrets…) Now to preview some highlights of our up-coming November events: A Nov. 2: Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival (the largest in Mississippi) A Nov. 14: Day trip to Laurel, MS, where the HGTV show, “Home Town,” is filmed; there will be something for everyone: shopping, museums, history and lots of walking/hiking! There will be other

hikes, too! Watch the DH Residents Facebook Page or our DH Geaux Hiking Facebook Page (contact the administrator to get access, if needed). Come to the planning meeting Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. in the Lakeview Room at the Diamondhead Country Club and help come up with future hikes (and places to eat, mmm?) And, remember, there are no fees to be a member of Geaux Hiking; everyone is welcome; you do not have to be a resident of Diamondhead; all ages and abilities are welcome … just get off your couch! Meet some new people! Geaux Hike!

SPORTS DIAMONDHEAD GOLF By Chris Altese, PGA Director of Golf Diamondhead Country Club & POA

Both golf courses are in fantastic condition. Be sure to take advantage of the great weather and come play golf. Booking online at www.DiamondheadMS.org is the fastest and easiest way to book tee times! We have several groups of golfers of various skill levels that welcome newcomers with open arms. Check with the golf shop staff if you are interested and we will be happy to assist you. Golf is fun and meeting new friends along the way makes it even better.

Christmas is not too far away, which means holiday shopping! Don’t forget that the golf shop is receiving new items regularly. Please stop by and check out our inventory. We might just have something you are looking for. Diamondhead Property Owners should take advantage of their 20% discount on all regularly priced apparel in the golf shop. We also have select apparel items on sale now for up to 50% off! The golf shop is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Sunday. Top apparel brands are available such as FootJoy, Callaway, Antigua, and more. Congratulations to the

CP Four Ball winners: Rob Muse and Scott Favre (Championship Flight), Dwayne Braud and Richard Willis (First Flight), Harold Bevan and David Beckner (Second Flight), Scott Lyons and Chuck Sites (Third Flight), Uwe Sietz and Jeff Hardesty (Fourth Flight)! This event was nearly a full field of 48 teams again this year. Special thanks to all our club staff for making the event successful. Hoppy and the F&B staff did an outstanding job with the Friday night steak dinner and the Saturday shrimp boil. Dan and his crew had both golf courses in top shape. The golf shop, cart operations, and player

assistants staff conducted an excellent competition. Our Diamondhead junior golfers are in the TOP 5% in the country. Jack Lawson, Karstyn Altese, and Grace Jin competed in the the Regional Drive, Chip, & Putt Championship held at The Alotian Club just outside of Little Rock, Arkansas, on Oct. 5. These three juniors train at Diamondhead Country Club and were in the field of only 960 junior golfers that qualified out of tens of thousands of juniors for this Regional Championship. Jack Lawson finished in 6th place overall and took home 3rd place honors in putting. Grace Jin also finished in 6th place

overall and took home 2nd place honors in driving. Lastly, Diamondhead will have a junior golfer competing at Augusta National Golf Club the Sunday prior to The Masters next year in April. Karstyn Altese won her age group and will now compete in the National Drive, Chip, & Putt Championship. All our junior golfers in the many junior golf programs continue to impress us every day. Jack, Karstyn, and Grace are shining examples of what our golf programs are doing at Diamondhead. Diamondhead proud! Congratulations to all! Upcoming Events Nov. 2 – Silver Slipper

In the ABCD 2 BEST BALLS formats last month the team of Charles Cangelosi, Don Crosby, Gene Demedicis and Joe Murray led the way with a score of -37, followed John Bunce, Pat Jarrell, Randy Maynard and Billy Rushing with -36. During the two times this format was played, the team scoring ranged from -37 to -24. Overall a lot of good scoring. The PEERS format resulted in John Benus, Bernie Breen, Ron James and Tom O’Connell having the best score of +17 followed by Norm Durapau, Larry Hall, Ron Rech and Tyrone Sartin wth a +12. Teams scores in this format ranged from +17 to +5. That’s the first time I can remember when at least one team score was not in the minus range.

The SCRAMBLE format was won by Art Burgoyne, Billy Stroud and Tom Woolbright with a -13. Second place was earned by Berni Breen, Al Mast, Tom O’Connell and Tyrone Sartin when they recorded a -11. Yes, the winning team had only three players, so they had to rotate the extra shot. In the POINTS format Gene Demedicis, Frank Morrow, Tom O’Connell and Bill Vandervort shot an excellent score of +24. Wow! A team average of 6 points above what each team member usually shoots. Second place was won by Marshall Brown, Don Crosby, Marion Rotolo and Ken Walker with a +20 As of mid-October, Gene Demedicis is the leading money winner with $180 followed by Tom O’Connell with $158. Can anyone catch these two before the

end of 2019? Fourteen players now have over $100 in credit in the Pro Shop. In the Closest to Pin competition, Warren Morgan has 13 wins, Tom O’Connell has 9 and 54 players have won at least once this year. The Annual Meeting and play date will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14. The DMGA Board is looking for some “new blood” to run the weekly play dates. Consider running for the DMGA Board for 2020. Voting, usually by acclimation, occurs during the December meeting. Reminder: In order to attend the meeting and eat, you MUST play that day! Have you ever wondered why caddies are not used on a regular basis on most golf courses? Obviously, money is a major consideration. However, it may be due partially because golf carts cannot count,

criticize or laugh!

NOTA BENE

CONTINUED, FROM PAGE 24 2nd Flight — Judi Brannan, 3rd Flight — Mary Mizell and Black Tee Flight — Beryl Laird. Therese Mauterer scored Birdies on Holes #2, #5, and #6. Beryl Laird had a Chip-in on Hole #3. Just in case you noticed that Therese Mauterer’s name has shown up a lot in this event, it is probably because she had a great day and shot an Even Par - 36. Tuesday, Sept. 10 was our Annual Pal Day. For this event, each of our members plays with one other. Then the combined scores and handicaps of each two-some are applied. This year’s 1st Place winning team was Kitty Gregoire and Rachel Stewart. The 2nd Place team was Sylvia Corban and Therese Mauterer. There was a tie for 3rd Place. The team of Carole Griffin and Beryl Laird and the team of Nancy Sislow and Pat VanDervort shared this place. In addition, Beryl Laird had a Birdie on #6 while Chip-Ins were scored by Sandy Merdinyan on #1 and Nancy Sislow on #7. Occasionally we get to take a “road trip” which is set up by our Club Pro, Chris Altese. On Tuesday, Sept. 17, 22of our gals played a 9-hole Scramble at The Bridges Golf Course in Bay St. Louis. Since no monies were exchanged, this game was for Bragging Rights only. The First Place Team included These Mauterer, Cheryl Saak, Fran Smith and “a ghost.” The Second Place Team

was comprised of Judi Brannan, Marilyn Galus, Pat VanDervort and “a ghost.” The Third Place was made up of Susie Fontenot, Dinah Knobloch, Nancy Sislow and Carol Wyrosdick. If you are unfamiliar with the term “ghost” in a golf game, it simply means that since the team was one player short of a foursome each team member must play an extra ball on each of three holes to make up for the missing player. And, we don’t want to overlook the fact that Marilyn Galus, Therese Mauterer and Nancy Sislow all had Birdies on #16 (a par 3). Our game was followed by a great lunch supplied by the staff at The Bridges. A Scramble was played on Sept. 24. The weather being a bit more comfortable, twenty seven of our gals took advantage of it and came out to play. First Place went to the team of Sylvia Corban, Therese Mauterer, Pat VanDervort and “a ghost”. There is an explanation of this term in the previous paragraph. Second Place honors went to Pattie Blackwood, Linda DeParto, Dinah Knobloch and Fran Smith. Third Place (determined by a scorecard playoff ) was the team composed of Judi Brannan, Renie Dack, Marilyn Galus and Beryl Laird. Good Golfing to all of our gals as we continue to look forward to more rounds and a bit cooler, dryer weather during the coming months.
