Spring is a busy season in Diamondhead. Pools are officially open on Saturday, April 27, and all pool pavilions and buildings are getting a fresh paint. This past month was packed with activities - the Fishing Rodeo was another huge success and our Community Center, Twin Lakes and Playgrounds have all been busy with numerous bookings. In March and April, we also hosted the Gulf Coast Women’s Golf Association, the Jack O’Neill Memorial Benefit and the Sliver Slipper VIP Golf Event. The POA continues to focus on covenant enforcement and collection efforts for member dues. As of March 2019, we have received 141 payments for past due accounts this year, resulting in more than $176,000 collected. Additionally, we have brought 187 of the 205 violations into compliance this year, that’s a 91% compliance rate. Enforcing our covenants helps ensure we are properly keeping up the appearance of our neighborhoods, which maintains our property values. Over the next few months, I will continue to work with our POA team towards 100% compliance and we encourage you to do the same. Meanwhile, to better understand the needs and concerns of our members, we are conducting several research projects. We have

completed a series of listening sessions and will be distributing an online survey to the entire membership. This feedback will be invaluable as we plan for the future of Diamondhead. A complete audit for 2017, conducted by Certified Public Accountants, Alexander, Van Loon, Sloan, Levens & Favre, PLLC, was presented at our last board meeting. This report was delayed due to many significant changes during last year including the completion

of a complex transition to new accounting software and onboarding our new controller. Of particular note, the audit report was unqualified, which means our accounting practices fully conform with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Further, the report showed that the POA is in good financial health. The full report is available on our POA website. We anticipate receiving the audit for 2018 soon. The Diamondhead 2020 Committee has also been

busy. The Committee recommended that our board engage with Golfmak, Inc. to evaluate all amenities for efficiency, current status and future planning purpose for 2020 and beyond. Representatives were in Diamondhead during the week of March 14 talking with property owners. Subsequently, Golfmak reported that the review would require more time than they originally anticipated because of the number and

PUBLIC SERVICES EAST HANCOCK LIBRARY By Mary Gobert

Easter is behind us and Mother’s Day, the end of the school year and Memorial Day all await us in May. Things will be just as busy at the library and we want you to be a part of it. Make and Create happens from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on May 2 and it’s exceptional this month! Penny Crawford, the very accomplished artist who painted the mural in the children’s room at our library, will once again share her talent with us! Come to the class and Penny will help you create a bookmark or Mother’s Day card. This is going to be great fun as well as a great learning experience. Fun and Games continues this month from 2-4 p.m. on Thursday, May 2 and 16. Come with a friend or make a new one while enjoying a board, card, or domino game.

Friday Story Time is every Friday at 10:30 a.m. followed by a related educational craft project. There are only three Fridays in May left to enjoy this library perk, so we hope to see you on Friday, May 3, 10 or 17. Strength and Flexibility sessions meet from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday each week. This month’s dates are 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 and 28. Come get your limber on. LSD (Literary Society of Diamondhead) Book Club meets on Wednesday, May 8 at 10:30 a.m. followed by optional lunch at a local restaurant. May’s book is The Storied Life of A J Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin. If animated discussion is your thing, come join us! Line Dancing meets at 10 a.m. on Thursdays except the first Thursday of each month. The format of the class is changing for the better this month! 10:00-10:30 a.m. is

Finally, we established the Diamondhead Community Collaborative in an effort to better communicate with the city to discuss and find joint solutions to our community issues. Areas of discussion will include the Kapalahama Maintenance Facility Agreement, golf maintenance future needs and requirements, drainage improvements, permitting process, code/covenant enforcement and future plans. The details and action plan for each item will be developed by the collaborative members representing the city and POA. The frequency, time and place of the meetings will also be determined by the collaborative once it is formed. As always, I encourage you to come to me or another POA board member and share your questions, comments or concerns.

We don’t want to see them suffer. We just want to find a way to give them some relief. Below are a few common reasons why dogs scratch and what can be done to help. 1. Seasonal Allergies... Spring means pollen is everywhere. Live Oaks shed their catkins (the stringy stuff) and dogs walk through it and track it in the house. Blooming plants, flowers, grasses, weeds and other trees all produce pollen. Just like people, some dogs can be allergic. Living in a warm, humid climate means that allergies can be experienced year-round. Prevention and treatment: Regular brushing and bathing, air filtration and limiting exposure to the environment will help minimize the risk of allergic dermatitis. Your vet can prescribe medications like Apoquel or Cytopoint. 2. Fleas... Controlling fleas in our area is a yearlong battle and must be attacked in three areas. 1.) Your pet needs consistent treatment. There are very effective topical solutions like Frontline Plus, Revolution, or Capstar to name a few. Ticks... Just like fleas, ticks seek blood to survive. That is why tick bites create inflammation at the point of entry that can worsen the longer it stays attached. According to PETMD, a secondary bacterial infection can occur at the tick bite site that will lead to further irritation and itching. Prevention and treatment: Limit your dog’s exposure to areas where ticks may exist – wooded areas, dog parks, etc. Using a preventative flea and tick treatment consistently is ideal for your dog. 4. Mange... Mites like mange are microscopic insects that burrow deep into the layers of the skin to feed and live. Chewing their way through your dog’s skin creates inflammation and leads to secondary infections. Prevention and treatment: Keeping your dog in good health can help prevent some cases of mange. Often treatment after mite infestation is the only recourse. Dips, injections, oral drugs, and spot-on treatments can all be used to treat mange. 5. Nutritional Allergies... Some dogs may be allergic to certain proteins (beef, dairy, chicken, etc) and/or grains (wheat, corn, rice, etc.). Diagnosing food allergies should be done with the supervision of a Vet. DIAMONDHEAD GARDEN CLUB In May, Diamondhead Garden Club will conclude its 2018-29 meeting year with the May Luncheon and installation of new officers for 2019-21. We have had an eventful year beginning in September helping the Boy and Girl Scouts who planted bird, bee and butterfly plants in our city. We decorated the Diamondhead Library for the Christmas season and the Great Backyard Count in February. In March our club hosted The Gulf Coast Pilgrimage Home Tour and demonstrated our creative talents with a delightful Flower Show. There were 3 beautiful Diamondhead homes on tour; the home tour had over 100 visitors

per home during the 3 hours the homes were open. The Pilgrimage Home Tour was definitely a super success for or visitors. The Flower Show at the Diamondhead Community Center was also well attended; we had over 140 horticulture specimens ranging from late blooming camellias to a large potted rick-rack cactus. The 16 creative designs high-light ted the Flower Show theme “This Land is Your Land”; the Botanical Arts theme had 5 hats showing what can created with flowers and greenery to wear on a spring day. By Mary Alice Sierveld, Secretary The sounds of Shama Lama Ding Dong by Otis Day and the Knights from the movie Animal House are not ordinarily heard in the Emerald Ballroom at the Country Club. But they were on the night of Saturday, March 30, as we celebrated the 12th annual Toga party, a unique experience in Diamondheadnone of the other krewes do this. Krewe President Betty Maxwell directed her minions to decorate the ballroom for this unusual event. The stage was festooned with a blue, twinkling fringe, blue, silver and white mylar balloons, pillars, lions and a full moon. The tables were so pretty with white pillars, grape vines and more balloons — all mounted on mirrored circular trays. Guests enjoyed the photo op which had a background of deep, starry blue, and tall pillars draped with blue and silver tulle with twinkling stars. Krewe President Betty welcomed everyone and introduced new members: Hoss and Eva Amos, Ron and Michelle Slattery, Mike and Deanna Slattery, Pat and Beryl Laird, and Kay Bodamer. We mingled, enjoyed adult beverages, and admired each other’s costumes until dinner was served. Spring salad, chicken Piccata with sautéed lemon caper sauce, seasoned vegetable me-

dley with rice pilaf, and vanilla ice cream with caramel sauce and an Italian cookie — yum! Many thanks to the staff for the timely, courteous service. Music was provided by Southern Voice, one of the best bands to be heard in Diamondhead and the providers of the song mentioned above. We danced and sang along and had so much fun! But then, we always do. Olympus is an intentionally small krewe, but we are nearing our membership cap. The First Annual Jack O'Neill Memorial Benefit golf tournament was held on Saturday, March 30. This tournament was followed by a very nice luncheon arranged by our Social Chairpersons: Sylvie Corban and Susie Fontenot. Thanks gals for making our event such fun. On Tuesday, March 19, we played Odd Holes. As the name implies, you only record the score for the odd numbered holes that are played. And our winners were: First Flight: Carroll Gothie and Carol Laux tied for first place honors while Linda DeParto took the second place award. Second Flight: Pat VanDervort took first place and Nancy Sislow and Rachel Stewart tied for second place. Third Flight: Charlene Smuck took first

place, Carol Wyrosdick came in second, and we had yet another tie for third place with Renie Dack and Mary Murray recording the same scores. Linda DeParto scored a Chip-In on #5 and Marsha Roberts had one of #7 while Marilyn Galus had a Birdie on #6. Great job! On the last Tuesday of March we played a Scramble. Again, the weather favored us and we were able to get in our round followed by a Business Meeting and a briefing on the current PGA rule changes. Once again we experienced some tie scores. Tied for First Place were the teams of: Marsha Roberts, Nancy Sislow and Pat VanDerVort along with the team of: Pattie Blackwood, Linda DeParto, Kathy Jones and Beryl Laird. The two teams tied

for Second Place were a team composed of: Ruthie O’Neill, Judy Tauzin and Carol Wyrosdick and the team made up of: Judi Brannan, Sylvia Corban, Carol Laux and Charlene Smuck. During April we will once again play our Scotch Doubles (sometimes known as the Divorce Scramble). This is an 18-hole event followed by lunch at our Club. GARDEN PARTY AND HOME TOUR Beautiful scenic drive home opens its doors and gardens for viewing during Pass Christian Historical Society’s Annual Event On Sunday, May 5. The McElroy home sits on approximately five acres of beautifully landscaped gardens. The Pass Christian Historical Society will hold its annual Garden Party and Home Tour at the magnificent home of Janet and Michael McElroy, located at 533 E. Scenic Drive, on Sunday, May 6 from 2-5 p.m. The present home, originally commissioned about

1934, has been expanded to the east and west to be approximately 10,000 square feet and is decorated with fine furnishings, art and antiques. Equally interesting are the ample grounds with meandering walks, seating areas and buildings, including guest homes and a spa. The gardens were designed by Tom Eaves of Hattiesburg, working closely with owner Janet McElroy. Except for the old oak and pecan trees, all the planting has been done since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. During the party, light refreshments including canapes, wine and tea will be offered. Christy and the Rascals, a swing jazz band, will provide musical entertainment. Advance tickets cost $25, available online at www.passhistory.org until the day prior to the event and at the Cat Island Coffeehouse/Pass Christian Books (300 East Scenic). Beginning at 2 p.m. that Sunday, tickets may only be purchased at the home for $30. The Pass Christian Historical Society’s aim is to preserve and share the history of Pass Christian and the Gulf Coast. This event is core to that mission, and it’s also the Society’s largest fundraiser, helping to maintain operations throughout the year.
