Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency 2nd Annual Hero 100 Ride coming to Diamondhead The 100-kilometer (62mile) Hero Ride leaves War Memorial Park in Pass Christian at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 9. The ride is taking place to raise awareness of organ, eye and tissue donation. Riders can also choose 31mile, 10-mile or 1-mile fun ride distances. A 1938 Roadmaster donated by the Gulf Coast Bicycle Club will be raffled at the event. Riders will be arriving in Diamondhead between 9:15 and 10:00, that morning, and will stop for a brief rest at the corner of Kapalama Drive and Golf Club Drive before entering Diamondhead. They will then head to the water tower, take a right onto Diamondhead Drive West, following that to Diamondhead Drive East, make the loop back to the

water tower, exiting Diamondhead on Golf Cub Drive to Kapalama, and head back to War Memorial Park for the finish. Directional signs will be placed along the course to expedite the cyclists ride through Diamondhead and will be picked up after the last riders exit onto Kapalama. Last year a total of 117 riders participated, 80 to 90 road the entire course, including the Diamondhead loop. More riders are expected this year. We are very fortunate to have golf cart / pedestrian lanes for the majority of the route through Diamondhead. The only portions of the ride without the lanes, are the short section on Diamondhead Drive East from Kalani Drive to Golf Club Drive, and the portion on Golf Club Drive from Ka-

palama to the water tower. Hopefully, the City will be able to add similar lanes to these areas in the future. Bicycle safety is of key concern for the ride. In Mississippi, bicycles are considered to be vehicles. As such, cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as automobile drivers. Cyclists are required to come to a complete stop at stop signs, obey all traffic signals, and ride with the traffic flow. They are not required to ride on sidewalks or bike lane, if one happens to be available, but must ride as close as possible to the right hand curb or edge of the roadway, unless it is unsafe to do so, they are passing another cyclist, or making a left at an intersection, private road or driveway. Mississippi requires that

A car cannot make a right turn at any intersection or onto a highway or driveway, while or just after passing a cyclist, unless it is safe to do so. A motorist may pass a cyclist in a no passing zone when

it is safe to do so. Cyclists are required to have a white front headlamp visible from 500 feet, and either a rear reflector or read taillight also visible from 500 feet. They cannot ride more than two abreast on a road unless in an area where so stated. Unfortunately, Mississippi is one of the few states that does not have a helmet law for cyclists, no matter the age

of the rider. Diamondhead Geaux Hike Club will be on the streets of Diamondhead in early March to remind Diamondhead residents and visitors of the importance of obeying our safety laws and also making them aware of this year’s Hero Ride.
