The Diamondhead DPIA is honored to present candidates for both seats at its June meeting. Incumbent Representative Patricia Willis is being challenged by City Council Member

Nancy Depreo. County Supervisor Blaine Lafontaine will challenge State Senator Philip Moran.

Please join us to hear how the candidates plan to represent Diamondhead voters in addressing issues across our state. The date is Thursday, June 20 at the Diamondhead Country Club. We will gather at 10 a.m. to welcome members and newcomers.

The agenda begins at 10:30 a.m. with a brief meeting followed by our speakers. Stay for lunch and conversation at noon. All are welcome! The Diamondhead DPIA is an alliance of democratic, progressive, and independent minded residents whose mission is to inform, organize and energize fellow citizens to achieve a better community. We’re all in this together.

The Diamondhead POA has been very active this past month with plenty of exciting updates and new initiatives to continue to move our community forward. In May, the POA had our best ever Mother’s Day buffet with over 340 people enjoying the delicious buffet prepared by Chef Brian and staff and folks attending our Kentucky Derby party had great fun. We also recently hosted the Hancock County Chamber Power Lunch and had 40+ local business leaders enjoy lunch and networking.

Enforcing our covenants, which maintains our property values and keeps up the appearances of our neighborhoods, will continue to be a focus of the POA. To date, we have brought 240 of the 261 violations into compliance, that’s a 92% compliance rate. We are well on our way towards 100% compliance, thanks to the leadership of Ginger Necaise, the official Covenant Enforcer here in Diamond-

Don’t let the hot, dog days of summer get you down, friends! There is plenty of fun for kids and adults at our “cool” library this month. Just look at what we have in store for June!

FOR THE GROWN-UPS Strength and Flexibility sessions continue! Come work that rubber band body every Monday and Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. beginning on June 3 and 4 this month.

Make and Create happens June 6 from 10 a.m. to noon. Come see what others are crafting, do a craft here, bring what you’re working on, etc. It’s wide open!

Book Club (aka Literary Society of Diamondhead, aka LSD) meets the second Wednesday of each month at 10:30 a.m. At this month’s meeting on June 12, we will discuss “The Silent Patient” by Alex Michaelies, then adjourn for lunch. Come join our lively critique!

Beginner, Beyond, and Bodacious Line Dancing has something for everyone.

Sessions are on the second, third, and fourth Thursday of each month.

Join us on June 13, 20, and 27 at 10 a.m. if you are a beginner, at 10:30 a.m. if you are beyond that, and at 11 a.m. if you are feeling bodacious! Come to all three parts if you just want to move and meet some fun people.

FOR THE KIDS A Universe of Stories is the Summer Reading Program theme this year for school aged children.

A fun and enriching activity is planned for each Friday at 10:30 a.m. this month.

Come by for Crafts on June 7, Experiments on June 14, a movie on June 21, and the Mad Potter of Bay St. Louis on June 28.

Rubber Ducky preschool reading and activities will take place at the same time as the school age program does.

tion for litter prevention, recycling, and beautification, recently was recognized by Keep Mississippi Beautiful at its annual award luncheon.

Keep Mississippi Beautiful’s annual award luncheon honors Mississippians who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their communities in the areas of litter prevention, recycling, waste reduction, beautification and community improvement.

“This year’s award winners show the good work that these Mississippians are doing to take make our beautiful state a better place to live and for others to visit,” said Sarah Kountouris, Keep Mississippi Beautiful Executive Director.

Keep Diamondhead Beautiful was awarded the Keep Mississippi Beautiful Circle of Excellence Award.

The church has a diverse Music Ministry program. The Chancel Choir is enjoyed during the 10 a.m. service from September through May. Also participating in worship throughout the year are a Handbell Choir, a Praise Band, and the Living Springs Singers.

Two Adult Christian Education classes are offered each Sunday from 9 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. In addition, during the 10 a.m. service, children in grades K-5th meet for Children’s Church. Nursery care is available from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. each Sunday for in-

fants through Kindergarten.

We are currently taking Registrations for the 20192020 School year, which begins in September 2019.

The Diamondhead Wine Club is dedicated to the exploration and enjoyment of wine. At each monthly tasting, we sample at least 6 different wines and learn a little about their history and origins. The Club is open to any who are interested in enjoying and learning about wine.

He is certified through the Court of Master Sommeliers and Society of Wine Educators and has extensive experience in all facets of the wine industry. In May Diamondhead Garden Club ended their garden club year with the installation of new officers for 2019-2021. The following officers were elected at the April meeting: President Diane Domangue, 1st vice President Marilyn Bliler, 2nd Vice President Joyce Hunt, Recording Secretary Teresa Lake, Corresponding Secretary Pat Hultman, and Treasurer Mary Street.

At the Garden Clubs of Mississippi Convention in April, Diamondhead Garden Club won the following awards: Small Standard Flower Show Award, Spanish Trail District — this award also had a $100 monetary award, 1st place for The Adopt-A-Park Award for helping the Diamondhead Girl Scouts in planting bird and butterfly friendly plants in the Maluhia Garden, 1st Place in the Tree Planting Award for our work in planting the live oaks in the Diamondhead street medians, and the “9 x 19 Membership Certificate” for adding 19 new members in 20172019. From Deep South Garden Clubs: 1st Place in Tree Planting, again for the live oaks, and 1st Place for the Adopt-A-Park Award.

We are proud of the work that our members do in keeping our Garden Club active in the community that we live in!

In May, many of us attended the Spring Spanish Trail District meeting Bay St. Louis; in October Diamondhead Garden Club

will be hostess for the Fall Spanish Trail District meeting. The Spanish Trail District includes garden clubs in most of the Gulf Coast counties; at these meetings we meet our fellow gardeners and learn about new trends in gardening. We are looking forward to a terrific sum-

mer taking take of our yards and plants and always looking for the great plant that will win 1st place in the Flower Show next year.

When someone finds a stray, they should call Diamondhead Police Dispatch at 255-9191. Subsequently, the police secures the animal and places it with Sonny Frasier, an SPCA Member. Sonny boards the animal, which includes walking and playing with the dog. He gives the cats excellent care and attention, as well. Sonny is a resident of Diamondhead, insured, and is available for boarding your pets. His contact number is 504-452-5543.

Feral cat roundup Feral cats remain a problem in Diamondhead. We encourage residents who can safely trap these cats to call us for vouchers and take them to the vet to be neutered or spayed and receive a rabies shot. If you have feral cats near your home and you do not feel comfortable trapping them, call us at 228-8612287 and we will send a volunteer to do the trapping.

The Newcomers Aloha Luncheon was celebrated on May 10, 2019 at the Diamondhead Country Club.

Our club members said goodbye to another fabulous season in a Hawaiian themed setting courtesy of Maggie Craig, the Hospitality/Welcome chairperson. Hula music played and ladies lunched while old friends and new friends enjoyed wonderful fellowship. If you missed this month’s gathering, no worries we will see you all in September!

fantastic folks that love getting together to share camaraderie, good stories, and even better food! Our first block party started right after Katrina in efforts to bring us closer together as we all had suffered so much loss from flood waters. It was nice to see friendly faces and just be together. As the years have gone by, more and more neighbors have joined in on the fun. This year, Tina Finley did a great job of organizing the event, and even asked for all to bring donations for the Hancock Animal Shelter. (Betty Maxwell delivered and presented almost 100 pounds of supplies to Director Shane Wyman of the Hancock Animal Shelter that was collected the day of the picnic.) Shane Finley and Ricky Hester grilled hot dogs and prepared pulled pork, and neighbors from all around brought in wonderful side dishes and desserts. Doug Maxwell provided fun music, the kids enjoyed the North Rec Swimming Pool, Chili and Mojo joined in, and games were played by kids and adults alike. Myra Derry, Linda Hester, and Tina Finely decorated to make things even more festive. Shane Finley led out group in prayer followed by a rush to enjoy all the wonderful dishes to be had. We love our neighbors and cherish the history we share together.

VFW Post 2880 members enjoyed a Crayfish Boil for their May meeting. The Post members met at the Twin Lakes pavilion for family fun and comradery.

Post Commander Jerry Peppenger, in his last official act, opened the festivities by welcoming the members and guests, followed by the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance.

He then asked member Reid Walker to give the blessing. The members then led the charge to the food table and enjoyed crayfish, potatoes, corn on the cob, sausage, various salads and homemade desserts. Incoming Commander, Fred Sullivan made a presentation of flowers to Kay Peppenger and presented Jerry Peppenger with a photo album to remember the Post.

We bid farewell to Jerry and Kay, who will be sorely missed, as they are moving to Tampa, Florida.

Business CONTINUED, FROM PAGE 2 addressing many of their concerns, most of the recommendations regarding the clubhouse operation, golf shop, and golf course. We also sent out an e-mail survey last month to get feedback on several areas of interest which received a great response. This feedback will be invaluable as we plan for the future of Diamondhead. We will continue to keep members informed of our plans and process moving forward.

Finally, some of you may have noticed that the restroom and decking have been removed at the Diamondhead Marina “Ship Store.” This action is in response to problems pointed out in a recent flood plain management audit. Recently, City of Diamondhead officials participated in a Community Assistance Visit (CAV) with floodplain management specialists from the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). The purpose of this visit was to assess Diamondhead’s floodplain management practices to ensure compliance with the minimum standards of the National Flood Insurance Program in order for property owners to be able to purchase flood insurance. While the community received high marks overall, a couple of deficiencies were identified where unsecured structures could cause collateral damage.

The Ship Store at the Diamondhead Marina was identified as a temporary structure, which has to meet certain criteria. As soon as the city notified the POA of this issue, we immediately agreed to remediate the problem prior to hurricane season. We are also working with the city to develop a permittable long-term solution. As these solutions come together, we will keep everyone informed.

Our plan is to provide a high-quality facility that meets community needs while keeping our homes safe and insurance rates as low as possible. This is a great example of how the city and the POA can work together to address the issues that impact our community. Additionally, the Diamondhead Community Collaborative had its first meeting this past month. The level of cooperation has been great, and we look forward to con-

tinuing our work to move the community forward.

As always, I encourage you to come to me or another POA board member and share your questions, comments or concerns. Additionally, if you are involved in a group that meets regularly and would like to hear about the activities and developments in our community, please contact me at bmarthouse@dhpoa.org and I would love to make plans to attend. I enjoyed speaking with the Diamondhead Democrat Progressive Independent Alliance at their monthly meeting in May and I look forward to other invitations so that I can continue to keep all members updated on the POA’s efforts and to help address any questions or concerns that the community may have.

As always, I would also love to see you at our monthly board meetings, which are open to the public. We value what you have to say and look forward to our continued communication as we work together to plan for the future of Diamondhead.

APRIL MINUTES A regular meeting of the Board was held at the Diamondhead Country Club, Diamondhead, MS. President Bob Marthouse chaired the meeting and called it to order at 7 p.m.

Present were President Marthouse, Vice President Craig Harvey, Secretary Karen Rice, Treasurer Bill Hatchett, Director Gary Becker, Director Teresa Ertel, Director Stewart Nutting, and Director Donald Silcio. Absent were Director Jerome Tullier and Ex-Officio Pat Laird. Also present was GM Tom Koger, Attorney August Rechtien, and Controller Darrion McInnis and approximately 25 members.

Financials – Were presented by Controller McInnis and attached as Exhibit “A”.

Opening Remarks were made by President Marthouse. He announced that Director Dick Nolan had submitted his resignation, and that it was accepted.

GM Koger gave his report and noted that $43,000 had been collected on past due accounts in the past month and since November more than $180,000 in back dues has been collected.

Committee Reports were given to update the members on activities.

New Business: 1. AVL Audit – Kelli Lyons, CPA, with AVL Company presented a PowerPoint program on the results of the 2018 audit.

2. Social Media Policy – In Executive Session a motion to accept the Social Media Policy was made by VP Harvey and seconded by Director Ertel. A copy is attached as Exhibit “B”. All “Employees” as listed on the document will be required to sign it. Motion passed 7-0.

3. Sale of POA owned lots – In Executive Session a motion was made by President Marthouse to approve the agreement drafted by Attorney Rechtien to enter into a purchase/sale agreement with Elliott Homes for 43 identified lots. Motion was seconded by Director Nutting. Motion passed 7-0.

4. Harbor House – In Executive Session a motion was made by Treasurer Hatchett to conditionally approve the reassignment of the Harbor House lease. Motion was seconded by Director Silcio and passed 8-0. (Point of order, Director Silcio was not in attendance for the two previous motions, but he arrived in time for this one.)

5. Next Regular Meeting of the Board – Monday, May 20, 2019 Executive Session – The Executive Session was held at 5:30 PM prior to the evening’s meeting to discuss privileged legal and human resource matters. The Executive Session ended at 6:56pm.

Member Forum – No one signed up to address the Board. There was one question from the audience about insurance protecting the POA on the youth sports program.

It was noted that we are protected under the insurance that the participating teams have in place.

Adjournment – A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by President Marthouse and seconded by Treasurer Hatchett. The motion passed unanimously. The meeting was adjourned at 7:35 p.m.

It was noted that there is a potential for conflict of interest in that the low bidder is a Board member, it was acknowledged, and any conflict of interest was unanimously waived by the Board members.

Motion passed with a 6-0 vote. The Board member with the conflict of interest was not present at the meeting and did not participate in the vote.

Adjournment – A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by VP Harvey and seconded by Director Nutting. The motion passed unanimously. The meeting was adjourned at 5:35pm.

Summer golf is here!

Why play golf or live anywhere else? Diamondhead has it all.

Our annual Summer Junior Golf Clinics has proven to be some of our most popular events. Call the Golf Shop today at 228-255-3910 to see if space is still available. Two separate clinics will take place with the first running from June 10-13 and the second from July 15-18.

Limited to the first 30 paid entries in each session.

Open to all juniors age 5 to 15. $120 per junior with a $20 early bird discount if paid in full three days prior to start date. Check with the Golf Shop for more information or to sign up.

Speaking of junior golf, congratulations to several of our Diamondhead juniors on their play this high school golf season.

Our juniors had a strong state championship runs!

Klausen Madison was the first girl to score in the 80s for Gulfport High School and finished Top 12. Peyton Russell finished Top 12 for Hancock High School.

Katelynn Altese, Hancock, won the 6A State Championship individual title and was nominated for the Clarion Ledger’s Girls Golf Athlete of the Year. Taylor Tinsley also had a Top 12 finish for Pass Christian.

One of DCC’s favorites, The Big Kahuna, is scheduled for June 22-23, the Wheel of Misfortune is back on June 29, and the Hawaiian Couples Invitational is scheduled for June 1-2. If you have the game, we have the entry form. Please join us for any of our golf events if you like testing your game.

Please be sure to post all of your scores in GHIN so that you have an accurate handicap index. Any time you play, your score should be posted. Often we see players involved with large groups forgetting to post because they believe someone else might be taking care of the score posting for the group. This is not the case in most situations. Make sure if you play, you post.

Keep our golf courses beautiful! When parking your golf carts next to tee boxes and greens please keep all four tires on the cart path. This prevents unnecessary wear and tear on the edges of the cart path. Also, we changed to green and white “no cart” stakes instead of signs in front of each green. Please return to the cart path before the “no cart” stakes.

A huge congratulations to Bill Roofner. The 92year-old shot a 79 from the red tees with 5 birdies.

How many of the rest of us will even be playing golf at

his age?

We had a record team score shot in the ABCD 2 Best Balls when the team of Gene Demedicis, Tony Palmature, Bill Roofner (see above) and Dutch Vandervort recorded a score of -47. Yes, that’s correct, -47! The second place team of Fletcher Coker, Pat Jarrell, Jerry Jones and Tyrone Sartin posted -37, which is an excellent team score also.

All post-play urine samples came back clean.

In the POINTS format Jerry Jones, Tom O’Connell, Tyrone Sartin and Dave Stein shot a +16 followed by Mike Cavataio, Charles McCombs, Tony Palmature and Ray Walters with a +14.

The SHAMBLE format was played with an impressive 48 players, the highest number of players to play on a Wednesday in the last few years. A record

Low Net Winners â&#x20AC;&#x201D; 1st Place was taken by Cheryl and Bob Saak, 2nd Place by Fran Smith and Glenn Brooks, and 3rd Place was won by Dinah and Ernie Knobloch. (Unfortunately Rachel Steward and Darwin Helms had to leave before their picture could be taken documenting their 2nd Place Low Gross winning.). The event was followed by a nice lunch in the Club. This event is always enjoyed by all who take part in it.

Due to a tournament being held at our home course, several of us had the opportunity to play nine holes at our neighboring course, The Bridges. We played a Scramble with teams of 5 players. We only played for bragging rights and they belong to our 1st Place Team of Jerry Ingraham, Therese Mauterer, Sandy Merdinyan, Charlene Smuck and Pat VanDervort. With only 3 strokes more 2nd Place was a tie between the following two groups: the team of Pattie Blackwood, Marilyn Galus, Dinah Knobloch, Marsha Roberts, and Margaret Sherwood; and the team of Marsha Biestek, Sylvia Corban, Linda DeParto, Shirley Halterman and Fran Smith.

It was a challenge and fun to play with many of our usual golfing partners at a totally different course layout.

On Tuesday, April 16, we played our usual monthly Trophy Day. First Flight Gross winners were: Therese Mauterer (1st Place) and Ann Nutting (2nd Place). First Flight Net winners were: Margaret Sherwood (1st Place) and Sue Richards (2nd Place). Second Flight Gross winners were: Beryl Laird (1st Place) and Pat VanDervort (2nd Place).

Second Flight Net winners were: Nancy Sislow (1st Place) and Fran Smith (2nd Place). Third Flight Gross winners were: Carol Wyrosdick (1st Place) and Charlene Smuck (2nd Place) Third Flight Net winners were: Mary Mizell (1st Place) and Mary Murray (2nd Place). Closestto-the-Pin honors were captured by: Therese Mauterer in the first flight, Beryl Laird in the second flight, and Mary Mizell in the third flight. Longest Drive awards went to again Therese Mauterer in the first flight, Fran Smith in the second flight, Dinah Knobloch in the third flight and Beryl Laird from the Black Tees. Therese Mauterer had a Birdie on #4 and Dinah Knobloch had a Chip-In on #6. Appears as if Therese had an especially good day. Congrats!

Just a note about the Black Tees. These are official PGA sanctioned tees placed forward of the Red Tees (the closest tees).

When playing from these tees you must do so for at least five recorded rounds to establish a Black Tee Handicap. Several of our gals are now beginning to play from these tees and

soon a Black Tee Flight will be part of our regular playing schedule.

On the 23rd of the month, we played Add Par 3s and Par 5s. In the first flight, Ann Nutting and Margaret Sherwood tied for 1st Place and coming in second by only one more stroke was Shirley Halterman. Second Flight winners were Marsha Roberts in 1st Place and Carol Laux and Nancy Sislow tied for second place. The Third Flight also had a tie for 1st place with Sylvia Corban and Beryl Laird recording the same score. Second place was garnered by Ruthie Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Neill. Chip-Ins were recorded by Carole Griffin on hole #9 and Nancy Sislow on #2.

On the final Tuesday of April we held a Scramble and invited our fellow golf gals from the Eighteen Holers to join us.

Eighteen of these gals took us up on our offer and the results were as follows: First Place Team winners were: Linda DeParto, Mary Alice Harfoush, Margaret Papaleo and Carol Wyrosdick.Second Place Team included Sylvia Corban, Rita Durham, Terrie Garrett and Marsha Roberts. And, last but certainly not least, Third Place Team was composed of Therese Mauterer, Sandra Merdinyan, Vivian Strader and a Ghost.
