Diamondhead Krewe of Mardi Diamondhead junior golf Gras announces Grand Marshall instructors score a new record 2019, Senator Philip Moran Senator Moran was born in Bay St Louis on March 6, 1961. He is married to the former Sheila Morris; they have two children, Lori and Alan. His son Alan is a City Councilman for Diamondhead. The Morans are going to celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary this year. Senator Moran is a former Hancock County Supervisor and board president, He owns his own company, Philips Pest Control, LLC. He attended Mississippi State University where he earned his BS degree in Business and Agriculture. He has had his business for 35 years, having learned the trade from his father in law. Senator Moran, a native of Hancock County, is a member of the Knights of Columbus, through the Catholic Church. He is a member of the Hancock Rotary Club, Hancock Chamber of Commerce, Business & Professional Association and MSU Alumni.

the lottery bill for which he campaigned for 20 years. He also secured 35% BP money for Hancock County, stating that other coastal counties received 25%. Economic Development, Energy, Enrolled Bills, Highways and Transportation, Investigate State Offices, Labor, Ports and Marine Resources. We look forward to having Senator Moran as our Grand Marshall who says it is an Honor to serve as Grand Marshal, adding that the Diamondhead parade is his favorite since it is so family friendly.
Our junior golf instructors have accomplished something that’s never happened In the 50-year history of the Gulf States PGA! No golf facility has won the Junior Player Development Award three consecutive times until now. In 2016 and 2017 Chris Altese, PGA, Director of Golf, received the award and Hoppy Smith, PGA, Director of Player Development, is the 2018 award winner. And, to put a cherry on top, Hoppy has been named as a U.S. Kids Golf Top 50 Instructor. Jimmy Headrick, PGA, and a member of the Golf Academy of Diamondhead teaching staff is the most decorated PGA Professional in the Gulf States PGA for his work of growing and developing junior golf said “what has

PUBLIC SERVICES EAST HANCOCK LIBRARY By Mary Gobert
Everyone at East Hancock Library hopes that all of you have happily rung in the new year and are well into enjoying King Cakes from far and near! We’re never far away from fun here in beautiful Diamondhead, and the library can be part of that fun too! Children’s Story Hour for the littles is every Friday at 10:30. This month’s dates are February 1, 8, 15, and 22. Ms. Lynn has a great lineup of
books and Ms. Carol has a great lineup of crafts to go with them. Strength and Flexibility Classes continue! Come to any or all classes and see an improvement in your mobility! Classes are on Mondays and Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:30. Monday’s dates this month are the 4th, 11th, and 25th. Tuesday’s dates are the 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th. The library is closed on Monday the 18th for President’s Day. Make and Create is held each month on the first Thursday from 10 until 12.

This month it will be on the 7th. Bring something to work on and visit for a while. Sometimes, activities are planned that you can participate in as well. Come check it out! Fun and Games is a
relatively new activity that is held twice a month. This month’s dates are the 7th and the 21st. Last month, we averaged 10 participants per session and everyone enjoyed the time we shared. Come at 2:00,
play cards or board games until 4:00. It’s fun to learn new games and meet new people! Beginner Line Dancing from 10 till 11 is the newest activity being held at East Hancock Library. Every Thursday except the first Thursday of the month we practice popular line dances but do it step by step so that you can truly learn a dance each week. You can try it out on the 14th, 21st, or 28th this month. Put your boots on (or dance in your socks!) and join us! LSD Book Club is one year old! As we celebrate our first anniversary this
month, membership is at 21 now, and new people join each month. February’s book is The Alice Network by Kate Quinn. Join us at 10:30 on Wednesday, February 13th if you’d like to be part of a great group! More than Books will be a 90 minute session on Thursday, February 14th from 1 to 2:30. COMMUNITY CHURCHES SERVING DIAMONDHEAD Diamondhead Community Church 5301 Diamondhead Circle 228-255-5556, dhcommunitychurch.org Worship Services: Services are held Sundays at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Holy Communion is served on the first Sunday of every month. The church has a diverse Music Ministry program. The Chancel Choir is enjoyed during the 10 a.m. service from September through May. Also participating in worship throughout the year are a Handbell Choir, a Praise Band, and the Living Springs Singers. Our Wednesday Night Youth Program runs weekly from 5:15 p.m. - 6:45 p.m. The program is for Youth in Grades K thru 12. Youth are divided into groups according to school grades. Besides helping to control the pet homelessness crisis, there are also medical and behavioral benefits to spaying female pets and neutering male pets. A According to the ASPCA, your female pet will live a longer and healthier life because spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast tumors, which are malignant or cancerous in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. Spaying your pet before her first heat offers the best protection from these diseases. A Neutering your male pet prevents testicular cancer and some prostate problems. A Your spayed female pet won’t go into heat. A Your male dog will be less likely to roam away from the house looking for a mate. A A neutered male may be better behaved. Unneutered dogs and cats
are more likely to mark their territory by spraying strong-smelling urine all over the house. Your dog may be less likely to mount other dogs, people and inanimate objects after he’s neutered. Some aggression problems may be avoided by early neutering. Debunking Spay/Neuter myths and misconceptions A Spaying and neutering will not cause your pet to be overweight. Your pets will remain fit and trim as long as you continue to provide exercise and monitor their food intake. A Neutering is not a quick fix for all behavior problems. Although neutering your pet often reduces undesirable behaviors caused by a higher level of testosterone, there’s no guarantee that your dog’s behavior will change. Although the surgery will reduce the amount of testosterone in your pet’s system, it won’t totally eliminate it. Neutering will not reduce behaviors that your pet has learned or that have become habitual. When to Spay or Neuter your Pet A For dogs: While the traditional age for neutering is six to nine months, puppies as young as eight weeks old

The Diamondhead Wine Club is dedicated to the exploration and enjoyment of wine. At each monthly tasting, we sample at least 6 different wines and learn a little about their history and origins. The Club is open to any who are interested in enjoying and learning about wine. Join us at our upcoming tastings: Thursday, February 21st – An Evening With Chateau Ste. Michelle – 7:00 at The Club Chateau Ste. Michelle began producing fine wines with the repeal of Prohibition. In 1967 they introduced a new line of premium wines under the guidance of legendary winemaker Andre Tchelist-
cheff called Ste. Michelle Vintners. In 1976, they became Chateau Ste. Michelle (CSM) and built their winery Chateau in Woodinville, Washington. Today, they have two wineries, one for production of white wines in Woodinville and a second producing red wines at Canoe Ridge Estates in Eastern Washington. The evening will be hosted by Distributor Brian Hollis and Chateau Ste. Michelle representative Tracy Weinstein. DIAMONDHEAD GARDEN CLUB In March 2019 Diamondhead Garden Club will be hosting the Gulf Coast Pilgrimage Tour of homes and presenting their Annual Flower Show. The theme for this year’s flower show is “This Land is Your Land”; there will 4 design categories with 4 flower designs within each category. HANCOCK COUNTY RELAY FOR LIFE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY FUNDRAISER Saturday May 4th 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. Hollywood Meadow walking path by RV park, off Hollywood Blvd. Relay is a team fundraising event where team members take turns walking around a track or designated path. Each event is 6-24 hours in length and each team is asked to have a member on the track at

Kaleigh Rae Warton
Krewe of Olympus announces 2nd debutante Kaleigh Rae Warton is the daughter of Shane and Jennifer Warton of Kiln, Ms. The granddaughter of Larry and Debra Wall of the Kiln, Jesse Williams of Kenner, Louisiana and the late Horace and Gloria Warton of the Kiln. She has one sibling Maguire Warton. Kaleigh is a senior at Hancock High School in Kiln, Ms. She currently serves as Vice President of her senior class. She is a member of National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Technical National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, BETA, Mu Alpha Theta, Educators Rising and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She has been a member of the Hancock High School Cheer team for the past 2 years. Kaleigh was chosen to be a member of the Justin Daniels Photography Senior Team for 2018-2019 in Diamndhead, Ms. She is a member of Sacred Heart Dedeaux Catholic Church in Pass Christian. After graduation she plans to attend College and is interested in pursuing a degree in the medical field.
A
colorful and ground-breaking era in the history of many residents of Diamondhead and most of the attendees was remembered at the colorful January coronation ball of King Akua Kai the 44th, Joe Murray, and his lovely Queen, Mary Craig Murray. Everyone in attendance had been (maybe) at one time or another a peace-loving, tree-hugging, Birkenstockwearing flower child or at least their children were! An enormous and imaginative barrage of beautiful flowers in every hue of the rainbow greeted revelers from the hallway to the stage and everywhere in between, created by the imaginative hands of Ball Captain Elaine LaFontaine and her committee. Many ladies spent days creating the blooms in many colors under the direction of local artist Sylvia Corbin. Large photos of California lined the hallway and postcards of the area were scattered about the tables whose centerpieces were (empty) wine bottles with tiny lights, grapes and custom labels created by Sue Foster bearing the names of the King and Queen and the California Dreamin’ theme. The head table was also decorated with personalized wine bottles for each member of the court and the stage was lined with enormous wine bottles
and grapes fashioned by Sylvia Corbin, surrounded by more large and colorful flowers. The setting was not only the 60’s and 70’s, of course, but especially the beautiful California countryside connecting Southern California and Northern California. An oversized backdrop of the Golden Gate Bridge graced the stage to set the scene for the Ball. King Joe Murray and Queen Mary Craig Murray spent many years living and working in Southern California and chose the California Dreamin’ theme as a nod to that time. Both King Joe and Queen Mary Craig were docents at Point Lobos State Park in California and visit there most summers. After ball guests greeted friends and admired the beautiful décor, Vice Commodore Chuck Ingraham introduced Master of Ceremonies Ron Rech, who sauntered down the aisle of the ballroom to Ray Charles’ “California Here I Come!” MC Rech introduced Royalty from other Krewes and past Royalty of the Krewe of Kamehameha in attendance. To the strains of “Blue Hawaii”, the 2018 royal court was introduced and entered the ballroom for their last promenade, passing out beads to everyone: Lady-in-Waiting Barbara Miller and Equerry Val Miller, Maid Judy Lakota and Duke Joe La-

Three trumpet blasts heralded the introduction of outgoing King Akua Kai the 43rd, Richard Brown and his beautiful Queen Bobbie Yaniga Brown, who were warmly greeted by the crowd as they made their final appearance as reigning King and Queen. Trumpet blasts announced the entrance of King-elect Akua Kai 44th Joe Murray and Queenelect Mary Craig Murray who made their way to the
stage amid spotlights, camera flashes and a standing ovation from the crowd. After bowing and curtseying to the outgoing royalty, they took their places on the stage and were duly crowned by King Richard and Queen Bobbie. Champagne toasts from King Richard to the newly-crowned Royalty and from King Joe to his Queen were followed by toasts from everyone to the 2019 King and Queen. Gifts of Royal Goblets, personalized Mardi Gras flags (the “colors”), and Medallions of the Ali’I of
the Krewe of Kamehameha were presented to King Joe and Queen Mary Craig by Paula Gonzalez, Chuck Ingraham, and Martha Bryan, Ali’I Regina-inCharge, respectively. The Ali’i was established for all former kings and queens of the Krewe of Kamehameha and the medallions may be worn at all Krewe functions. Queen Mary Craig’s dress was from the Royal Queen Collection: an A-line scoop neck, black silk dress embroidered with gold and jeweled overlay, with net black sleeves also with
gold overlay. King Joe wore a formal black tuxedo with a gold vest and bowtie. The 2019 Royal Court was introduced and entered the ballroom to “California Dreamin’” by the Mammas and the Poppas: Duke Harold Dawley and Maid Linda Dawley; Duke Phil Ramseyer (seated at the Royal Table) and Maid Cherie Ramseyer, escorted by Gary Ward; Duke Paul Wyrosdick and Maid Carol Magers Wyrosdick; Equerry Bob Saak and Lady-inWaiting Cheryl Saak. Maid
Linda wore a royal blue Ralph Lauren gown with rhinestone straps and soft flowing drape effect; Maid Cherie wore a royal blue v-neck chiffon gown with mid-night blue accent lace covered with rhinestones and sequins; Maid Carol chose a royal blue boat-neck lace gown encrusted with sequins and slim lace long sleeves; Lady-in-waiting Cheryl was also gowned in royal blue with a high neck and peek-a-boo sleeves heavily adorned with rhinestones. Headpieces of each maid were original sequined and beribboned circlets festooned with “flowers in their hair” so reminiscent of the flower children of the time and indicative of the laid-back lifestyle of California including San Francisco, and Woodstock. The Dukes were formally attired in black tuxedos with gold vests and sported elegant gold top hats. The first dance for the King and Queen was, fittingly, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” by Tony Bennett, framed by the backdrop of the Golden Gate Bridge. They were joined on the dance floor first by King Richard and Queen Bobbie, their Royal Court, and finally by former Boaters’ Royalty. An additional highlight of the Coronation Ball is the announcement of the person to receive the Royal Dolphin Award. This year, everyone was
most pleased but not surprised that the tireless and creative Mary Young Mizell was named a Peer of the Realm for her contributions of choregraphing, directing, and participating in the entertainment programs for a number of balls and being either the chairperson or participant on the committees for several other balls over the years. She will carry the title of Lady Mary Mizell henceforth. Past Royal Dolphin Award Award Winners in attendance were recognized also. Special Guests of King Joe and Queen Mary Craig were introduced: Mr. Daniel Lasman, Master Cameron Lasman and Miss James Lasman from Studio City, CA; Col. Charles and Jerry Ingram; Jim and Diane Sherrouse, Keith and Mary Benvenutti; Blaine and Heather LaFontaine; Rodney and Dianne Ackerman; Tom and Barbara O’Connell; Ernie and Dinah Knobloch; Walter and Xochilt Piper. After a delicious dinner, Ball Captain Elaine LaFontaine was recognized and thanked all of those on her committee who helped make the evening such a success: Hank Fried created the magnificent San Francisco trolley that was a huge hit as a photo op, JoAnn Fried, Sylvia Corbin, Sue Foster created the invitations and wine labels, Noni Bucha-
nan handled reservations and seating, Eva Amos created the centerpieces, “flower girls” Rita Beckner, Marilyn Lott, Sue Foster, Leslie O’Neill, and Micheline Cazayoux, and everyone helping to decorate: Ed and Teresa Martara, Dean Shrable, J. J. and Doug Skinner, Linda and Don Thibideaux, Martha Bryan. Lloyd Ramirez and Ken Dropco managed the spotlighting, Diamondhead’s own Music Man, Doug Maxwell, handled the coronation music, and last but not least, Elaine especially thanked her wonderful husband, Ronnie LaFontaine, who, incidentally, volunteered her for the job of Ball Captain! Following the committee recognition, the traditional Second Line, led by Queen Mary Craig and King Joe, paraded around the ballroom to everyone’s delight and dancing to the music of Johnny Fung and his band was enjoyed for the evening, ending the night with a rousing rendition of “Shout” that had everyone on the dance floor. Many thanks to Eli Biggs and the Staff of the Diamondhead Country Club and Congratulations to King Joe Murray, Queen Mary Craig Murray, their Court and to Ball Captain Elaine LaFontaine for a most successful event!

Krewe of Diamondhead Coronation Ball on the Nile, 2019 It was a night of firsts for the Krewe of Diamondhead as Ali’ i honua XLIV Ron Rhoades and Dinah Rhoades were crowned Saturday December 8, 2018. The evening opened with the Mistress of Ceremonies, Nicole Boisdore, who welcomed everyone and provided an update of the Krewe. Board members were recognized before the retiring reigning court appeared to say their fond farewells, thanking everyone for a wonderful reigning year. Once the current court arrived on the stage, the Royal Guard of Past Kings processed in and the Royal Scepters were retired. The moment arrived
when the maids and duke elect entered the room, Maid Judy and Duke Darryl Davis entered first followed by Maid Penny and Duke Henry Majors, who were then followed by Maid Renee and Duke John Kirschenbaum where they took their places on the stage. Before the king and queen elect entered the ballroom, members were informed about a very special event taking place. Our queen elect is the Krewe’s first legacy queen. Her parents Chuck and Till Garrison reigned king and queen over Diamondhead in 2003. We are honored that the wonderful family is continuing the tradition

Schulze crowned our newly reigning king and queen. Sara and Kevin left the stage and immediately removed their crowns. Champagne toasts were offered by Captain Sandy Hatem and a proclamation was made by our new king Ron Rhoades. King Ron and Queen Dinah Rhoades exited the stage. Shortly thereafter, meals were served and dancing ensued for a wonderful night of celebration.
Good days and some not so good days in regard to weather. A similar pattern to the past couple of years where we have seen weather fluctuations to start off the new year. When the weather has been favorable golfers are coming out in large numbers so the new year looks promising. By now all of the regular golf members should have completed their annual golf membership process. If you have not done this yet for whatever reason stop by the DCC Golf Shop before you play your next round and our staff will assist you in getting this done. Our annual golf membership is open for new members to join at any time. Thirteen to fifteen minutes per hole leads to 4 hours and 15 minutes for an 18-hole round of golf. Spring Season brings gol-
fers from all over the country to Diamondhead. Please show our guests the hospitality Diamondhead is known for. As our courses get extra guest playing we should all anticipate golf rounds to take 4 hours and 15 minutes. Our staff will do their very best to keep pace moving but when you have full golf courses everyone is going to feel a lost ball search from the groups ahead of you.
Three and a half hour rounds most likely will not be able to be maintained. The word is getting out and more golfers are adding Diamondhead golf to their itinerary. Thanks in advance for your understanding and cooperation! The PGA Tour Champions return to Diamondhead in March for the Rapiscan Systems Classic qualifying. This is a first class event that needs our

By the time you read this a New Year will have dawned. We at the Nines hope and pray that yours will be both Happy and Prosperous! Once again Mother Nature interfered with some of our events, but nonetheless we have a good amount to report because of some of our Holiday events. Our normal Trophy Day competition was played as usual on the first Tuesday of the month. Our First Flight winners were: Low Gross - Judy Tauzin, Low Net - Linda DeParto, and Low Putts - Marilyn Galus. Second Flight winners included: Low Gross - Margaret Sherwood, Low Net - Pat VanDervort, and Low Putts - Marsha Roberts. And, last, but certainly not least, were the winners in our Third Flight: Low Gross - Ruthie O’Neill, Low Net - Jerry Ingraham, and Low Putts - Carole Griffin. On Trophy Day we also award prizes to the following categories in each flight: Longest Drive and Closest-to-the-Pin. MOST HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH SPRING 2019 GOLF TOURNAMENT The modified Scramble with moving tees will be played on the Cardinal course with a shotgun start at 8:30 AM on Saturday, April 13th. Teams will receive 10% of their total handicaps to obtain a net score; no high-
er than a handicap of 25 will be used to determine the team handicap. Moving tees means that your team will tee off each hole based upon your team score on the previous hole. Depending upon your team’s play, you may tee off from tees you have not played lately. The teams will be placed in flights before the tournament starts. The Sliver Slipper will provide food on the course while various distributors will supply beer, soft drinks and water. In addition there will be several holes on the course where other refreshment
will be provided. The par 3 holes will have trips or golf clubs given to anyone who makes a hole in one on that hole. The plan is to pay four places in each flight. Last year $2400 was distributed to the winning teams. Ties will split the money. The payouts will be determined by how many teams participate. Last year there were four flights with nine teams in each flight for 144 players. Three or four teams had to be turned down because of the full field. NOON GROUP Charles Harrison has recently been elected the Noon Group’s new chair-
person during its annual member meeting. All of its members wish him well during the coming year. The Noon Group, one of the oldest privately-run golfing groups in Diamondhead, welcomes all players with an established handicap to join them in a variety of games. The Noon Group plays Monday through Saturday,
usually at 12:06 p.m. The courses vary as does the game. Monday there is a combination “team/ individual/skins” game, Tuesdays and Thursday are “individual/skins/par 3s” and Wednesday, Friday, Saturday is “team” play. Just $15 gets you in the game. The Pro Shop can “point” Diamondhead’s new (and old) players looking for a game in the right direction. Hancock Performing Arts Presents ‘An Evening with George Winston’ An evening with celebrated solo pianist George Winston at the state-ofthe-art Hancock Performing Arts Center in Kiln, MS on Monday, February 25th, 2019. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Hancock County School District. Please also join us in support of a local food bank Hancock County Food Pantry by bringing a donation of canned food to the concert. There will be collection baskets at the entrances. George Winston grew up mainly in Montana and also spent his later formative years in Mississippi and Florida. During this
time, his favorite music was instrumental rock and instrumental R&B, including Floyd Cramer, the Ventures, Booker T & The MG’s, Jimmy Smith, and many more. Inspired by R&B, jazz, blues, and rock (especially the Doors), George began playing the organ in 1967. In 1971 he switched to the acoustic piano after hearing recordings from the 1920s and the 1930s by the legendary stride pianists Thomas “Fats” Waller and the late Teddy Wilson. In addition to working on stride piano, he also at this time came up with his own style of melodic instrumental music on solo
piano, called ‘Folk Piano’. George is presently concentrating mainly on live performances, and most of the time he is touring playing solo piano concerts (the Summer Show or the Winter Show), solo guitar concerts, solo harmonica concerts, and solo piano dances (with R&B and slow dance songs). Tickets are $25 and $40 and are available at the website Eventbrite. Calling All Interested in Hiking and Socializing Geaux Hike is a newly formed group in Diamondhead to promote fellowship, increase opportunities to spend time in nature and motivate those
new or seasoned hikers to join. Club meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at the DH Country Club. There are no dues charged for membership. Beginner hikers’ hikes are scheduled on Thursdays, more strenuous hikes are on Saturdays. The Louisiana Hiking Club has adopted Geaux Hike as a sister club and Saturday hikes will be coordinated with them. Several hikes were scheduled in January. February activities include regular monthly meeting on 2/5 at 6:00 pm at the Country Club. On

The final list of Top Ten winners in 2018 were Tom O’Connell, Gene Demedicis, Marty Herndon, Ernie
Knobloch, Tyrone Sartin, Bernie Breen, Mike Cavataio, Warren Alexander, Ron Rech and Dutch VanDervort. Eighty eight players won money during 2018. The top Five Closest to the Pin winners were Mike Cavataio, Tom O’Connell, Gene Demedicis, Warren Alexander and Warren Morgan. Hole-in-One’s were made by Al Mast, Gene Sullivan, Glenn Brooks, and Larry McKay.
Breen recorded an excellent team score of -30. If they were not tested for Performance Enhancing Drugs after play with a score like that, maybe? Warren Morgan and Bill Stroud both won Closest to the Pin two times. Conspicuously absent from this list are Mike Cavataio and Tom O’Connell, the two who had the most wins in 2018. As you probably know, there are several rule
changes in 2019 which are designed to speed up play and make rule interpretations easier. Have fun and play more golf!

Many who were unable to play joined us at the delicious Christmas Luncheon. Toys were collected for the Hancock Foster Children’s Program while funds were collected to help the local Food Pantry. We all had an opportunity to view a great video of previous events ably compiled by our own Beryl Laird. In addition, Ruthie O’Neill was presented with the Most Improved Player of the Year Award. Sandy Price presented cash awards to everyone who scored Birdies and Chip-Ins during the past

There were a lot of changes to the USGA rules for this year. Just to highlight a few,
you do not have to remove the flagstick when putting – it is no longer a penalty if you hit it when you putt; there is no penalty for removing loose impediments, touching the ground, or grounding your club in a penalty area; you may remove loose impediments from a sand trap; time allowed to search for a lost ball has been reduced from 5 minutes to 3 minutes; when dropping a ball, it is now dropped from knee height rather than shoulder height; hitting your equipment, or yourself, with the ball is no longer a penalty stroke; hitting the ball twice with your club (which I have done plenty of times from the sand trap) is no longer a penalty stroke – yay! On that Tuesday we played a game called Add Par 4s. In this event, you play as usual but only your score on Par Four holes is taken into account.
