2019 VFW VETERANS DAY PARADE Nov. 9 was a beautiful day in Diamondhead for the VFW Veterans Day Parade, with temperatures in the 60s. The parade was led by the Diamondhead Fire Department (Ladder Co. 1), followed by the Diamondhead police, decorated motorcycles, Hancock County High School Junior ROTC, Harold Dawley’s military jeep, deco-
rated golf carts with veterans and friends of veterans, and the Topless Club (convertible automobiles). The parade began at the clubhouse, proceeded down Golf Club Drive, to Diamondhead Drive East, to the Veterans Bandstand near City Hall, where Pat Laird led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Barb Knapstein led the National Anthem.
A bake sale benefiting veterans in need was held to the delight of the children in attendance. VFW Post 2880 gives a special thank you to the Diamondhead Police Department for the great job it did coordinating traffic for the parade. By Pat Laird, Jr. Vice Commander VFW Post 2880

BUSINESS PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Winter has arrived and the holidays are approaching fast! Our staff has put together some great events to help us all celebrate the season! The Send a Letter to Santa mailbox is going up on the walking trail by the club on Nov. 29. If you want a return letter from Santa, include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Drop-off deadline for replies is Dec. 17. The mailbox will be removed Dec. 21. Our annual dinner with Santa is scheduled for Dec. 12 at the club. Reservations are limited to the first 200 residents. We sell out every year so call (228) 255-1900 ext. 170 to make your reservation. The event is only $14 per person, with kids under 3 free! Also coming up is the “End of Prohibition Party” on Dec. 5 in the “Secret Bar” (aka The 19th Hole) from 7 to 10 p.m. We’ll have karaoke, a costume party, select menu of Prohibition-era drinks, and a Prohibition-era appetizer platter. On Dec. 21, don’t miss the Ugly Sweater & Golf Cart Party from 7 to 10 p.m. Take advantage of the $10 hors d’oeuvres buffet (member discount doesn’t apply), holiday music, holiday drink specials. Be sure to dig out your ugliest sweater and decorate your cart for the ugly cart and sweater contests. Judging starts at 8 p.m. Our annual Christmas

head Futures Committee had its first meeting and is pursuing an ambitious agenda aimed at finalizing new membership plans and options moving forward. The committee is chaired by POA Director Gary Becker. Your committee members include POA Director Nicole Boisdore along with POA members Ricky Sheppard, Bob Pineau, and Paul Guichet. Expect to hear more from the Futures committee in
the coming months and look for an announcement about another townhall meeting where the new plans will be announced and presented for member review. Our ongoing collect efforts of members dues continue, and as of Nov. 6, 2019, we have received 1,128 payments for past due accounts this year, resulting in more than

Gus provided an historical overview along and a detailed discussion regarding the effects covenant expiration may have on real estate transactions and communications. We continue to work closely with the city through the community collaborative. Last month we welcomed Diamondhead City Council member Nancy Depreo to the committee. Following a detailed overview of activities to date, we made significant progress on transferring ownership of the Kapalama maintenance yard to the city and transferring “drainage lots” to the city. The committee members, City Manager, and POA General Manger are all actively engaged in detailed discussions regarding ways we can move forward together to find joint long-term solutions that will preserve all our unique assets and recreational amenities. Good news, folks. Santa showed me the “Naughty List” and none of us are on it! Before jolly old St. Nick shows up with our loot on Christmas Eve, however, the library will be alive with holiday cheer and activities for everyone! NOTICES: The annual Tree Gala at the main library branch in the bay will be on Sunday, Dec. 8. It is a festive event with Christmas trees decorated by various groups and organizations on display. Refreshments will be
served. HO, HO, HO! The library will be closed on Christmas Eve, Tuesday, Dec. 24 and Christmas Day, Wednesday, Dec. 25. We wish you and yours a happy day with loved ones. Strength and Flexibility Class rolls on! The holidays sometimes make it hard to keep up a fitness routine, but our library is conveniently located and free! that were either dumped on someone’s porch, yard, or just by the side of the road. One three-week-old kitten was found in the middle of the street near the library. Kitten Season exploded this year, once again. Unfortunately, there are not enough foster homes available for these precious babies. The Hancock County Animal Shelter had no available room for a while. The Friends of the Animal Shelter was maxed out as well. We had to ask the rescuers to take care of them for a month or so until the shelter could take them and, if possible, until the kitties are old enough to be spayed or neutered. So far this year, the SPCA has spayed or neutered over 215 cats and dogs. In addition, we have paid for rabies shots and emergency medical care for low income families with pets, as well as pet food for them and residents who feed the feral cat colonies. Donations to supplement these pro-
grams are very critical. The holidays are the perfect time to thank all the people who donate to the SPCA. We could not continue to service the Diamondhead community without your help. Please consider making a year-end contribution to the SPCA of Diamondhead. With your support, we can impact our city in a lasting way. Fido and the happy kittens can’t say thanks, but we can! We are so grateful to have supporters making happy endings possible for helpless pets. Volunteers are at a shortage, whether it’s assisting with trapping, transporting to a veterinarian for spay/neuter, health issues requiring medical care, rehoming, feeding, fostering, the list goes on and on. This is a luncheon meeting so the business meeting will be very short. We will be having a “Plant Exchange” for the members. Everyone who wishes to participate is to bring a plant. It can be one you have purchased, propagated, or divided. You will then be entitled to take a plant home. The tables for the meeting will be decorated with centerpieces that have been created by the members using identical containers. Come and see how creative our members can be.
NEWCOMERS FALL LUNCHEON Diamondhead Newcomers gathered together on Nov. 8 at the country club for their fall event. A local business, Coastal Hardware, was kind enough to treat the members to their very own trunk show that included jewelry, holiday decor and home goods. DH GEAUX HIKING CLUB The DH Geaux Hiking Club is a diverse group that enjoys a wide variety of experiences and our October 2019 scrapbook provides some good examples. First, we walked the streets of Gulfport taking in the blocks and blocks and blocks of classic vehicles that were on display during the 23rd Annual Cruisin’ the Coast. We oohed and aahed over the shiny chrome and sheet metal, listened to oldies blaring from the crankedup radios (oh, those were the daze!) and put some miles on our sneakers! We
also cheered ’em on as they slow-rolled in Diamondhead, catching more than our fair share of beads (well, we ARE a “fetching” bunch!) Then we explored a beautiful nature trail right here in Diamondhead along the Rotten Bayou. The hiking gang identified trees, sighted flowers, and, owing to the expertise of our leader, Lee Taylor, and DH Garden Club member, Penny Crawford, learned about another “hidden trail” right in Diamondhead. We later enjoyed breakfast/lunch at MacBee’s. (Ohh, didya think we’d skip lunch?) We also carpooled over to Bay St. Louis for the

annual Halloween tour of Cedar Rest Cemetery presented by the Hancock County Historical Society. Normally a curated candlelit stroll through the cemetery, this year’s event was held indoors at the Kate Lobrano House, the society’s history-filled headquarters due to the freezing temperatures. Several HCHS members portrayed and told the stories of some of the notable citizens of BSL who are interred at Cedar Rest; and, of course, we enjoyed the hot dogs and other
goodies offered by the society. Gotta come back and read sum books! Now, on to December, when we will be having our monthly planning meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. in the Lakeview Room at the Diamondhead Country Club. We are always looking for neeeww ideas … of places to explore … things to do … and where to “do lunch” (natch!). At that meeting we will also discuss the details of our car-pooling day trip to Bellingrath Gardens in
Mobile, Alabama, on Dec. 14. $25 to tour the home, museum and grounds; they offer a group discount of $23 per person if we can get 20 people. Anyone who is interested can join us for this great display of holiday lights and beauty (estimated time of departure from DH is noon for the two-hour trip because we want to be seeing the holiday lights at dusk, around 5 p.m., which would allow time to tour the house, eat lunch on-site and then see

Western revelers were greeted to the Emerald Ballroom at the Diamondhead Country Club Oct. 19, 2019. All sorts of cowboys, sheriffs and cowgirls were entertained by RedLine band. Prizes were awarded for best dancing, with the band judging. June Curtin won as a single dancer with a mystery partner. Lou and LouAnn Cox received the couples award, having danced almost every dance. A country western plated meal was enjoyed with brisket and sides, and of course, apple crumble a la mode for dessert. The current court and the court elect were all in attendance. New members enjoyed a fun filled relaxing evening.

Miss Hayden Fairley Matheson is the daughter of Dr. Duncan and Mrs. Karyn Matheson of Diamondhead, MS. Hayden is the granddaughter of Mr and Mrs Craig W. Foster of Bay St Louis, MS and Dr Skip Matheson and the late Dr Sue Matheson of Diamondhead, MS. Hayden is a senior at Our Lady Academy where she serves as Secretary of Student Council, Co-Captain of the Quiz-bowl Team, a member of Campus Ministry and is one of
the Student Extraordinary Ministers. Hayden is a member of the National Honors Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honors Society, and is Vice President of Spanish Honors Society. Hayden is the Cheer Captain of the Saint Stanislaus Varsity Cheer Squad and is a 3- time UCA AllAmerican Cheerleader. She is also a six-year member of “The Vibe� competitive dance team at the Studio of Classique Vibe where she has competed and won numerous awards at a national level. Hayden is a

The Diamondhead Boaters Association held a scary and ghoulish Halloween Party at the Diamondhead Country Club. The event planners, headed by Hank and Joanne Fried, came as the Ghostbusters — and, they also won the first prize for group costumes. Becca attended Coast Episcopal School for her elementary education. At OLA, Becca is an honor roll student, president of Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, a member of National Honor Society, yearbook editor and photographer. She is a member of the Our Lady Academy retreat team and the Kairos retreat team. Rebec-

Jan Wiley was the nurse in charge with her long flowing red hair — a delight to her male patients! Susan Hightower won the prize for best female costume — definitely over the top! Dick Brown won for best male as the “top cat” in the room. Many more prizes and creative costumes were throughout the ballroom. As always, the Country Club dinner was delicious and enjoyed by all. Witches, cats and ghostbusters danced to the music of Rick Mocklin Southern Voice Duo. In Diamondhead, there is always a party and the groups are fun and welcoming! The next Boaters event will be the Coronation Ball on January 4, 2020.
ca is a five-year varsity Letterman for the OLA volleyball team as well as a five time State Champion. Rebecca plays club volleyball with the Mobile Storm Volleyball club, where she is a member of their National team. In her time outside of school, Rebecca is a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where she volunteers her time teaching catechism to the youth of the parish. She has also been a counselor at Camp Able, a day camp for special needs children, for several years.
Rebecca will be attending the University of South Alabama in the fall where she has accepted a scholarship to play volleyball for the Lady Jaguars. Hayden and Rebecca will be presented at the 2020 Olympus Mardi Gras Ball being held on the evening of Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020, in the Grand Ballroom of the Diamondhead Country Club.

Pullen and Bill Vandervort led the way with a team score of -29 followed by John Benus, Berni Breen, Joe Murray and Ron Rech (-28) and Charles Cangelosi, Gene Demedicis Chuck Ingraham, and Bill Roofner (-27). FYI: Bill Roofner will be 93 years old on Dec. 7, 2019. Amazing! The PEERS format was won with a team score of +28 shot by John Bunce, Mike Cavataio, Ken Walker and Berni Breen. Think about that team score —
each player produced an average individual score 7 points ABOVE what they were predicted to score. Bernie Breen has a +11 score to top all individual scores. Second place won with a team score of +26 shot by Dick Brown, Chuck Ingraham, Marion Rotolo plus a Ghost. Maybe the Ghost was Bernie Breen! The Twelve Day of Christmas sale runs Dec. 3 to Dec. 14 in the Pro Shop. Remember to spend the money that you have on the books before the middle of December. If your money is not spent, it magically disappears! The Annual Meeting will be held after play on Saturday, Dec. 14. The cost to play is $10 per player with $5 going to help pay for the meal. You must play that day to be able to eat the meal. After the meal, the Annual Meeting will be held to vote/name the DMGA officers for 2020. Volunteers for the various positions are needed. Warren Morgan has been the Secretary/Treasurer for the last few years. He will not continue in that position. It takes less than one hour a week to upgrade the website with the weekly info. On Oct. 10, the Ladies of the 18-Holers played a Mixed Bag. 1st Place team members were Dianne Ackermann, Georgeann
Luxion, Judy Amox and J.J. Skinner. Diamonds in the Rough Tournament offered by DWGA on Oct. 17. Great turnout with 92 participants from Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Format was 2-person best ball. Player handicaps ranged from 8.3 to 35 divided into 5 flights. Tournament committee decided to pay 4 places in each flight assuring better chance of winning a monetary prize. Great reviews from participants, who enjoyed beautiful fall-like weather and dry course conditions. Kudos to all participants but more especially to the many volunteers who made the tournament a great success. Best 9 out of 18 was played on Oct. 24. 1st Place Winners were Jodi Crosby first flight, and Jo Webre second flight. Trophy Day Gross on Nov. 7 was won by Linda Metz first flight and Lottie Williams second flight.

October brought us a bit of rain but still managed to be a rather warm month. And, we are still managing to keep our summer storms at bay, or should I say out in the Bay. Since several of our regular members were traveling on our usual Trophy Day,Tuesday, Oct. 1 play was canceled. Since the weather was quite nice, several gals did play just for practice.
Thursday, Oct. 10, was our Pink Hearts Tournament with gals from both the Nines and the 18-Holers playing to raise funds for breast cancer. As in the past, this event was well attended and received. It was followed by a lunch and various other fund raising opportunities. Over $7,000 was raised. We continue to be very thankful for the great support for this tournament and look forward to presenting another check to Joanne Nicely next year to support her work with cancer patients and survivors. On Tuesday, Oct. 14, the weather held allowing us to play our Even Hole game. Each gal plays her own game but only scores from Even Numbered Holes are counted for the competition. This year found us playing this event on the back nine holes of the Cardinal Course. That meant that only what you scored on holes #10, #12, #14, #16 and #18 were counted for the competition. Our First Flight winners were: 1st Place — Linda DeParto, 2nd Place — Ann Nutting, and we came up with a tie for 3rd Place with Shirley Halterman and Therese Mauterer posting the same score. In the Second Flight our winners were: 1st Place — Nancy Sislow, 2nd Place — Rachel Stewart, and 3rd

GOURMET TO GO St. Thomas Episcopal Diamondhead has been holding an outreach fundraiser called Gourmet To Go. Parishioners make casseroles, soups, meats, desserts, and other goodies, all available for sale to those in the community. People come from all over to purchase and take the delicious goodies home to store in their freezer for the holidays or for company which takes the stress out of entertaining!
Last year, 2018, money raised went to the Hancock County Food Pantry and Hancock Kids In Need — an outreach through our local Hancock High School. The food pantry received $600, and the Kids in Need received $100 a month for nine months, a total of $900. St. Thomas is deeply grateful to the community for supporting this outreach. COAST CHORALE ANNOUNCES CHRISTMAS CONCERTS Coast Chorale announced two concert dates for the 2019 Christmas season. The Chorale will perform at Christ Episcopal Church in Bay St. Louis, on Sunday, Nov. 24, at 4 p.m. and at Diamondhead Community Church on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. Concerts are presented free of charge through
the support of generous benefactors. Under the direction of Artistic Director and Conductor, Allen Henson, the Chorale will present, “The Heart of Christmas,” presented in five sections: Time Honored Christmas Anthems; The Heart of Christmas; It’s the Holiday Season of Christmas Favorites; Christmas in My Hometown; and a finale of Selections from G. Nota Bene CONTINUED, FROM PAGE 29 marks the start of the 27th season for Coast Chorale, as well as Henson’s 10th anniversary season as Artistic Director. The Chorale’s performance at Christ Episcopal Church on Nov. 24 will begin the 10th season of that organization’s 4th Sunday at 4 concert series. Henson notes, “The Coast Chorale was the very first choral organization to perform at 4th Sunday at 4, and we have closed their season every year since. We are so proud to be
associated with this great family event.” In addition to annual Christmas and spring concert seasons, Coast Chorale has represented the Mississippi Gulf Coast internationally by competing in choral competitions in Italy and Austria, taking the bronze medal out of 37 choirs competing in Vienna in 1996. The Chorale has also performed in New York City’s Carnegie Hall three times under the baton of British composer and
conductor, Dr. John Rutter. Coast Chorale also serves as a community partner to the choral department at West Harrison High School. Henson and the Chorale offer these high school singers the opportunity to perform with the Coast Chorale. Henson says, “The mentoring program with West Harrison has been a great recruitment tool for their choir program, giving these students a chance to develop their choral sing-
ing skills, while acquiring real-world performance experience.” Henson believes that community involvement is crucial to the success of any community group, and so Coast Chorale also performs at various festivals and outdoor events throughout the year. In conjunction with the monthly Second Saturday celebration on Dec. 14 at 6 p.m., the Chorale will walk the streets of downtown Bay St. Louis bringing traditional Christmas car-
ols to holiday shoppers. Shirley Halterman, Finance Director of the Chorale’s board of directors, states, “The Coast Chorale is a community organization, made up of local singers, supported by local musicians, and funded by local benefactors. This group belongs to the Mississippi Coast, and so we feel honored to give back to the community that supports us. Therefore, we always present our concerts free of charge.” As a nonprofit organiza-
tion, the Chorale is funded entirely through small donations from concert attendees, larger donations by sponsors in the Coast Chorale Angel Supporters program, and corporate sponsorships from donors such as Coast Electric.
