DPIA HOSTS 4TH ANNUAL LABOR DAY BBQ Save Labor Day for the 4th Annual Diamondhead DPIA Event It has become a tradition! Again, this year, Twin Lakes Pavilion will be the gathering place for Democratic candidates and delicious barbecue in an old-fashioned Democratic campaign rally on Labor Day. Invitations have been extended to statewide, regional, and local candidates to come tell us what they care about, what they plan, and how they’ll improve our state. As pictured in the photo, our group met on June 20 to form a car pool for a trip to La Lu's in Mandeville, LA, where we had a yummy breakfast followed by a 1.5 mile walk along the waterfront. Then we had lunch and 25-cent martinis at Zip's! (I guess you could say we are a hiking and eating club). We enjoyed stimulating conversation, beautiful Lake Pontchartrain views, and invigorating exercise.

DH Geaux Hiking Club Diamondhead Geaux Hiking Club is a relatively new group that gets together and, well, hikes (or walks, if you will). We meet at Diamondhead Country Club at 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month to plan our next hikes with our next planning meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 6. We generally walk together a couple of times

a month and follow our hike with lunch somewhere near our hike destination. Currently the group has about thirty members, but not everyone participates in every hike. The hikes vary in length and difficulty and could be in a nature setting or in a small town or even in the French Quarter in New Orleans.

We will be hiking the Airey Lake and P.O.W. Recreation Area in the Desoto National Forrest near Saucier, MS, on Thursday, Aug. 15. Airey Lake Recreation Area serves as a trail camp for the Tuxachanie National Recreation Hiking Trail. We will gather on that morning at DHCC a few minutes before 8 a.m. to form our carpool before

driving to Saucier. After our walk, we will, of course, find somewhere good to eat! Everyone is welcome to join us. Come to the planning meeting or just show up on Aug. 15. There is no charge to participate; you will pay for your own food. Keep up with us by following our Facebook Page.

Save the date! Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2. The event will start at 10:30 a.m., speeches at 11 a.m., Meet & Greet with candidates at noon with lunch. Delicious barbecue will be provided by Family Smokers for $10 a plate. Speakers will be listed in September’s issue of the Diamondhead News. All are welcome! The Diamondhead DPIA is an alliance of democratic, progressive, and independent minded residents whose mission is to inform, organize and energize fellow citizens to achieve a better community. We believe that we’re all in this together. Monthly meetings are held on third Thursdays of every month at 10 a.m. at the Diamondhead Country Club. FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK Here at the Diamondhead POA, we have one primary goal: preserving property values in Diamondhead by maintaining our residential appearance at a high standard, like we have for nearly 50 years. This is why we continue to focus on collection efforts for member dues and covenant enforcements. As of June 2019, we have received 744 payments for past due accounts this year, resulting in more than $305,492.46 collected. We are also steadily pushing towards 100% compliance in regard to covenant enforcements, which is made possible because of the efforts of the POA staff, board, committees and members who are effecting positive change. The Diamondhead POA has been gathering valuable data to better understand the needs and concerns of our POA members. We are constantly thinking of ways to update our amenities to provide new and exciting offerings for our community. Cur-

REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS DIAMONDHEAD COUNTRY CLUB AND PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION, INC. June 17, 2019 A regular meeting of the Board was held at the Diamondhead Country Club, Diamondhead, MS. President Marthouse chaired the meeting and called it to order at 7 p.m. Present were President Marthouse, Vice President Craig Harvey, Treasurer Bill Hatchett, Director Gary Becker, Director Stewart Nutting, Director Donald Silcio, and ExOfficio Pat Laird . Absent were Secretary Karen Rice and Director Teresa Ertel. Also present were GM Tom Koger, Attorney August Rechtien, Controller Darrion McInnis, and approximately 85 members. Motion to Amend the Agenda — Director Silcio moved to amend the

agenda to include a motion to postpone the June 29 vote on the proposed bylaws and charter revisions to allow the membership more time to read and have input on the proposed changes. The motion did not receive a second. Minutes of the May 20, 2019, regular meeting of the Board of Directors were approved as submitted. Motion made by Treasurer Hatchett, seconded by Director Nutting. President Marthouse abstained. Opening Remarks — President Marthouse informed membership that POA Attorney Rechtien will be giving a presentation on the bylaw revisions. We will be recording the presentation so it may be posted later. President Marthouse requested that questions from the audience be withheld until the completion of the presentation. Financials — A financial report was given by Controller McInnis. It is attached as Exhibit “A” General Manager Report — was given by GM Koger. Admin Committee Report — was given by Director Becker. Club Committee Report — was given by Vice President Harvey. Recreation Committee Report — was given by Director Silcio. 2020 Committee Report – President Marthouse read a report from the 2020 committee.

NEW BUSINESS Political signs — VP

Harvey mentioned that the Architectural Committee has granted a variance for political signs that mimic’s the city ordinance, which allows you to put signs on your property but not on the utility easement. Signs of any type are also prohibited in yards facing the golf course. Signs cannot exceed 3 square feet. Member Discount Program — VP Harvey discussed the Member Discount Program, which has been in the works for many months. This is not new as POA members currently receive reduced golf and tennis rates from what the general public pays. This new program will have member discounts for food and beverages at the club. By-Laws Revisions — Attorney Rechtien made an hour long presentation on the proposed by-laws revisions. Member Forum — Numerous questions were received from the membership about the proposed by-laws revisions. Several members requested that the vote be delayed until the membership has time to see the final bylaws revisions. Adjournment — A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by VP Harvey and seconded by Treasurer Hatchett. The motion passed unanimously. The meeting was adjourned at 8:28 pm. The Annual Membership Meeting of the SPCA of Diamondhead, MS, Inc., was held June 10 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Toni Grey, as Vice President, presided over the meeting and presented a brief overview of the Annual Report. Old business discussed included an update to the turtle relocation project in the duck pond, the ongoing problem of the dumping (or abandoning) of dogs, cats, ducks, turtles, etc. in Diamondhead and proposed solutions and the need for feral cat trapping, neutering and spaying. The election of new officers resulted in Toni Grey as President; Peggy Hollier, Vice-President; Betty Maxwell, Secretary; and Anna Smith, Treasurer. Board Members included Marie Alongi, Myra Derry, Clare Hanson, and Mary Ellen Turcotte. New business presented included plans for a children’s animal kindness program in local schools. Ms. Grey reminded the members that this is an election year for our State Senators and Representatives. It is an opportune time to discuss the lack of animal cruelty laws in the State of Mississippi. She reminded everyone that Mississippi ranks No. 49 among all the states. She pointed out that Louisiana is ranked No. 7. Even law enforcement complains about the fact that their hands are tied in most cases because there are no laws to protect animals from cruelty. We must hold

our legislators accountable. The Officers and Board Members honored Thelma Hopkins for her years of service by naming her President Emeritus of the SPCA of Diamondhead. In addition, they are having a “Magnolia Honor Tree” planted in her name through the Keep Diamondhead Beautiful organization. Toni Grey asked the members present to be ambassadors promoting the SPCA of Diamondhead and to encourage friends to join, as well as make donations including memorial donations in memory of loved ones including pets and to volunteer to foster

Krewe of Kamehameha announces 2020 Court On Saturday, June 22, the Emerald Ballroom of the Diamondhead Country Club was filled to overflowing with the announcement of King Akua Kai 45th and his queen. Commodore Ex-Officio Paula Gonzalez gave attendees a short time to greet each other after the pause in festivities since the end of the 2019 Mardi Gras season. Paula first recognized all previous Krewe of Kamehameha Queens and honored them. The 2019 Court was recognized and cheered. The ballroom erupted with applause when Ken Dropco and Janie Lamb Dropco were announced as King Akua Kai 45th and his queen. King-elect Ken Dropco took the floor

with Queen-elect Janie by his side to announce their 2020 Court: Equerry and Lady-in-Waiting Gary and Jan Wiley, Dukes and Maids Dean and Micheline Shrable, Hawes and Eva Amos, Bill and Noni Buchanan. All who were present came forward for a photo opportunity and to toast the newly named soon-to-be royalty. Decorations mirrored an evening Luau in Hawaii, accompanied by a deep blue sea, palm trees and tiki hut, thus providing a wonderful backdrop for photos for everyone! Sea shells and flowers adorned the dining tables. A delicious buffet of roast pork, chicken teriyaki and coconut cream pie was served for all.

SPCA of Diamondhead honors Thelma Hopkins with a magnolia tree

Music was provided by Soundsation and dancing was enjoyed until the evening came to a close. Many thanks to Chair Phil Gillen and to all those who helped decorate the ballroom for such an enjoyable evening. The Country Club staff, wonderful as always, provided a delicious Luau and service. Boaters members of the Krewe of Kamehameha look forward to an exciting 2019-2020 Season, with the Fall Party on Saturday, September 21, the Halloween party on October 26, the Coronation Ball on January 4, 2020 and the Mardi Gras Ball on February 8, 2020.

Mrs. Thelma Hopkins, former President of the SPCA of Diamondhead, long-time Diamondhead resident, animal activist, lover of cats, beloved by all her friends and pets, and just an all-around wonderful lady, was presented a magnolia tree in her honor on July 19. SPCA of DH President Toni Grey was not in attendance, but Vice President Peggy Hollier read a heartfelt tribute to Miss Thelma written by Toni. She was also presented the title of President Emeritus by President Toni. Miss Thelma was surrounded by SPCA of DH Vice President Peggy Hollier, Secretary Betty Maxwell, Board Members Myra Derry, Clare Hanson, and Mary Ellen Turcotte, as

VFW POST 2880 EARNS RARE HONOR Diamondhead VFW Post 2880 recently received a rare honor when they were informed that they had earned All-American status. This was the first time in the post’s history that the post earned this particular distinction. Under the leadership of Commander Jerry Peppenger the post earned the recognition for the time period of 2018-2019. Commander Peppenger will attend the National Con-

vention in Orlando, Florida, to receive his coveted All-American Cap. This status is a very hard-earned recognition. Posts must complete all the programs listed in the Department’s Monthly Activity Report (Poppies, Americanism, VOD, Patriot’s Pen, Community Activities, Hospital, and Commander’s Special Project); and also maintain or exceed 100% in membership. The post is then entered into competition with other posts in the District, State and Region. Only the top 50% in the region will be considered for the All- American Status. VFW Post 2880 Diamondhead was one of 10 VFW posts in the state of Mississippi to receive the honor. In addition to earning the All-American status the post also earned All-State honors. Hurricane Barry scared our golfers from their regular routine but it did give us much needed rain. The DCC Pine golf course is in beautiful condition and is a joy to play. We hope to see many of you out on the golf course this month. Be sure to like the Diamondhead Country Club Facebook page and Instagram page to keep current on happenings and specials. Our 2nd Summer Junior Golf Clinic was held the week of July 15-18. The weather impacted our first day of the clinic but then cooperated the rest of the week. Our golf professional staff does a great job introducing the game to these youth golfers. It is very exciting to watch Diamondhead Country Club grow the game. If you ever wonder about the future of golf just come watch how much fun these juniors are having while learning this sport that you can play for a lifetime. Even though these juniors are learning at an early age it is never too late to take up the game. Let us know if we can help you pursue learning how to play. At the time of writing this article our junior golf program members continue to have a great summer of golf. Klausen Madison had a win on the Mississippi Junior Golf Association Tour. We have four juniors that have qualified again for the US Kids Golf World Championships being held in Pinehurst, North Carolina this month. Rowdy

Foster (age 8), Karstyn Altese (age 10), Jack Lawson (age 11), and Katelynn Altese (age 15) all earned eligibility status to play in this championship. The U.S. Kids Golf World Championship and the U.S. Kids Teen World Championship are the largest and most prestigious events in the world of their kind. Both threeday tournaments that attract nearly 2,000 participants from across the United States and more than 30 countries abroad. To receive an invitation, junior golfers must complete the season as a top player in their age category

During this time (approximately 10 weeks, depending on weather), we have been and will be utilizing a double or split tee start each morning on the Pine from 7:30 a.m. to 9:14 a.m. and then we will return to single tee times off No. 1 at 11:44 a.m. Tee times will not be available between 9:14 a.m. and 11:44 a.m. as we must allow space for all morning play to make their respective turns onto the opposite nine holes. In this hot and humid weather, the latest idea for keeping hydrated while playing golf is to drink half your body weight (pounds) in ounces between the time you get up in the morning and when you finish your round. Example: if you weigh 180 lbs., drink 90 ounces of water by the time you finish your round. The top hydrating foods are coconut water, celery, watermelon, cucumber and kiwi. These foods add electrolytes to your body. If you’re thirsty after playing, you did not hydrate enough before and during your round. We’ve had 40-plus players most of the time with a high of 47. That’s really a good turnout based upon the heat. Reminder: While the Cardinal course is closed, you must check in before 7:30 a.m. since tee times on both No. 1 and No. 10 start at 8 a.m. With the split tees, the total time for each team to complete play continues to be between 3 hrs 30 min and 4 hrs 15 min. In a SCRAMBLE format played on a wet morning, three teams tied, each with a -6 score. Dick Armstrong, John Bunce, Mike Cavataio, Dennis Laumann, Tom O’Connell, Gary Rierea, Dutch Vandervort, Al Mast, Frank Morrow, Joe Murray and Don Perkins all paid the $5 entrance fee and each one won $6. Not a bad return for 4 hours of “work”! In the Closest to the Pin competition Paul Cain won three times followed by Warren Morgan and John Bunce with two wins last month. A special recognition to Randy Maynard for winning his first C.T.P. Around 80 players have won money so for in 2019 with Gene Demedicis, Pat Jarrell, Dennis Laumann, Reny Pangan and Tom O’Connell leading the way. The C.T.P. shows 43 winners with Warren Morgan, Billy Stroud, Dutch Vandervort and Joe Murray having the most wins. Remember to start your hydration before play begins!

Can you believe we are already half-way through 2019? Where does the time go? As is common in Diamondhead and the rest of Gulf Coast, the June weather continues to be both hot and humid making golfing a challenge even in the early morning hours. But, as the stalwarts we are, we Nines hang in there to meet the challenge. On Tuesday, June 4, we managed to play our usual Trophy Day and our winners were as follows: (Low Gross) 1st Flight — 1st Place, Ann Nutting; 2nd Place, Sandy Merdinyan; and 3rd Place, Kathie Pierson. 2nd Flight — 1st Place, Kitty Gregoire; 2nd Place, Fran Smith; and 3rd Place, Dinah Knobloch. 3rd Flight — 1st Place, Beryl Laird; 2nd Place, Carol Laux; and 3rd Place, Carol Wyrosdick. (Low Net) 1st Fight — 1st Place, Sue Hebert; 2nd Place, Margaret Sherwood; and 3rd Place, Barbara Linville. In the 2nd Flight winners were: 1st Place, Ra-

No one in Flight Three scored a long drive within the fairway bounds. Closest-to-the-Pin awards went to Sandy Merdinyan in Flight One, Marsha Roberts in Flight Two and Kitty Gregoire in the Black Flight. Just in case you may have noticed that names sometimes occur in one Flight this week and another Flight the following week. This is because Flights are determined by your handicap. Which flight you fall into is determined by the number of players from each handicap group that play on that particular Tuesday. On Tuesday, June 11, we played a game called “Putter Plus Two.” As the name implies, you may only use three clubs (your putter and two other clubs that you identify before you begin to play). Choose wisely! Your score will very well depend on those selections. And, this competition’s winners were: Flight One — Tied for 1st Place were Susie Fontenot and Margaret Sherwood, and in 3rd Place Sandy Merdinyan. In Flight Two — 1st Place was taken by Rachel Stewart, and Kathy Jones and Marsha Roberts tied

for 2nd Place. And, in Flight Three, yet another tie, this time for 1st Place between Shelley Palmature and Charlene Smuck with 3rd Place going to Carol Wwrosdick. On a late note, two ladies had Chip-Ins and Birdies. Marsha Roberts and Margaret Sherwood scored these on Hole No. 4. Even though eight hearty souls showed up to play on Tuesday, June 18, for Mulligan Day, the weather gods were not on our side and the rain won out. On June 24, the weather finally cooperated, and we managed to play our Scramble. Our First Place Team consisted of: Sylvia Corban, Kathy Jones, Therese Mauterer and, of course, a ghost (because whenever there are only three players on a team the additional player is considered a Ghost.). The Second Place Team was composed of: Shirley Halterman, Beryl Laird, Sue Richards and Carol Wyrosdick. And, in Third Place, we had the team of Marilyn Galus, Mary Mizell, Nancy Sislow and Pat VanDervort. Once again, we invite you to join us for 9 holes of golf and to make some new friends. During August, we will have assigned tee times instead of our usual shot gun start because the Cardinal Course will be closed while the greens are replaced.

Deacon Norm has been assigned to Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He feels blessed to have been assigned to his parish and looks forward to working with the people of Diamondhead.
