Join us at the Diamondhead Memorial Day Event on Saturday, May 25, 2019, at 11 a.m. under the Oaks at the Diamondhead Country Club Circle honoring those heroes who have preserved the freedom we enjoy today. The guest speaker will be Rear Admiral John A. Okon, Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, Oceanographer and Navigator of the Navy. A concert will begin at 10:45 a.m. and the Memorial Service will follow at 11 a.m.
Diamondhead has a rich military heritage with veterans from World War II to the current conflicts. The sponsors of the service are VFW Post 2880, the Diamondhead Country Club and Property Owners Association, Inc. and the City of Diamondhead. FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK By Bob Marthouse
As spring begins, I want to take this time to reflect on positive progress we’ve achieved as a POA. At the end of last year, we endeavored to not only become more transparent in how we communicate but also to increase the accuracy and diligence with which we collect dues. Beginning in November 2018, the POA began placing a renewed emphasis on collection efforts. We’re excited to say that as of March 2019, we have received 289 payments for past due accounts, resulting in more than $133,000 collected. Additionally, we understand the importance of our covenants and how the rules we put in place as a POA help maintain our property values. So in 2019, we’ve stayed vigilant to make sure we are all contributing to maintaining the appearance of our neighborhoods. As a result, we have brought 146 of the 158 violations into compliance. These may seem like trivial matters, especially to the many of you who pay your POA dues on time and who adhere to our covenants. However, these small changes allow us to run more efficiently and provide services to our members. Complying with our covenants also helps maintain our property values without raising

I also encourage you to come to me or another POA board member and share your questions, comments or concerns. I would also love to see you at our regular board meetings, which are open to the public. We

A series of small listening sessions with a diverse cross section of the community will be followed by a broader online survey distributed to the entire community to ensure that
everyone’s voices are heard. This feedback will be invaluable as we plan for the future of Diamondhead. We have also established the Diamondhead Community Collaborative in an effort to better communicate with the city. We will continue to keep the community informed of our progress moving forward. PUBLIC SERVICES EAST HANCOCK LIBRARY By Mary Gobert
Hope everyone is enjoying spring and that the Easter Bunny treats you well this year! The library is so jam packed with activities for April, you’ll be hopping to keep up with all of them for sure. Every Monday and Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., come join us for the Strength and Flexibility class. Every Friday at 10:30 a.m., bring your little ones to Story Time with Ms Lynn. Research shows that reading to a child is one of the absolute best things you can do for them. Wednesday, April 10 is the next meeting of the Literary Society of Diamondhead (AKA the Book Club). The group meets at 10:30 a.m. and April’s book is “Where the Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens. Optional lunch follows the meeting. Thursday, April 4 from 10 a.m. to noon and Monday, April 15 from 2 to 4 p.m., you can join the Make and Create folks. This activity is very broad and includes
rock painting and adult coloring. Lately, folks have been teaching knitting as well. Feel free to bring something you’re working on if you prefer to do that. All materials are provided, so come explore. Fun and Games happens from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 4 and April 18. Any number of board, card, and domino games are played in the spirit of good fun. Come join the group! Thursday, April 11 and 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. are Movie Classics days. Call the library to find out what movie will be shown on each day, then settle in for a ride back in time with your favorite old movies. Thursday, April 25 from 10 to 11 a.m., come join the Beginner Line Dancing group for fun and exercise in a relaxed setting. Friday, April 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. is Sit, Stay, and Read. The Visiting Pet Team of South Mississippi will bring their trained dogs to the library for this event. Children may come and read to the dogs or just visit with them while they read or look at books. See you at the library!

COMMUNITY CHURCHES SERVING DIAMONDHEAD St. Thomas Episcopal Church Invites YOU to Join Our Wednesday Dinners Come break bread with us and enjoy the fellowship of our Wednesday evening shared dinners at St. Thomas, held at 5:30 p.m. each Wednesday from September through May. Carmelite Moreau is shown with the Silver Medal awarded at the 2019 Greater New Orleans Senior Olympics. She competed in the Pickleball Women’s Doubles with partner, Joyce Madere, of Louisiana. Carmelite is scheduled to play in the Mississippi Senior Olympics in both Women’s and Mixed Doubles in May. She has been a resident of Diamondhead for 17 years.
Worship Services: Services are held Sundays at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Holy Communion is served on the first Sunday of every month. The church has a diverse Music Ministry program. The Chancel Choir is enjoyed during the 10 a.m. service from September through May. Also participating in worship throughout the year are a Handbell Choir, a Praise Band, and the Living Springs Singers. Our Wednesday Night Youth Program runs weekly from 5:15 p.m. 6:45 p.m. The program is for Youth in Grades K thru 12. Youth are divided into groups according to school grades. Meals are provided
at no cost. Two Adult Christian Education classes are offered each Sundayfrom 9 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. In addition, during the 10 a.m. service, children in grades K-5th meet for Children’s Church. Nursery care is available from 9 to 11 a.m. each Sunday for infants through kindergarten. April 14, Palm Sunday, DUMC will have their Easter Cantata and the Children’s Ministry will have a small Easter Egg Hunt and Celebration. April 21 will be our Easter Worship Service. At the end of April or beginning of May our
Children and Youth Ministry will lead our Worship Service. All holidays can pose dangers to pets and it is during that time that the vet clinics are usually overflowing with emergencies. A few tips to keep your pets safe during Easter and Spring are below. 1. Easter Lilies are highly toxic to all pets, especially cats! All parts of the Easter Lily plant are poisonous — the petals, leaves, stem, and even the pollen. Cats that ingest a small amount of pollen while grooming their fur, can suffer severe kidney failure, according to the veterinarians of the National Pet Poison Helpline. There is no effective antidote to counteract lily poisoning. Symptoms will develop within six to 12 hours of exposure. The sooner you get your cat to a vet, the better his chances of survival. Other lilies that are equally toxic are Lilium, Tiger lilies, Day lilies, and Asiatic lilies. But there are non-toxic lilies like Peruvian, and Peace lilies. Other toxic flowers are Azaleas, Oleander, Hydrangeas, Lantana, Daffodils, Clematis and
Wisteria. 2. Chocolate contains theobromine, which is highly toxic to pets, as well as methylxanthines (a relative of caffeine) and results in vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, an abnormal heart rhythm, seizures, and possible death. Baker’s chocolate and dark chocolate pose the biggest problem. 3. Sugar free candy containing xylitol, an artificial sweetener, found in some chewing gums, toothpaste, baked goods, and candy. Signs of toxicity can be seen as quickly as 30 minutes after ingestion in dogs. Xylitol leads to rapid release of the hormone insulin, which can cause a sudden decrease in the dog’s blood sugar level. Symptoms include vomiting, weakness, uncoordinated movements, depression, seizures and unconsciousness. This common sugar substitute can be deadly for pets if eaten. 4. Easter Grass can be a deadly threat if ingested. It can become anchored around the base of the tongue or stomach, rendering it unable to pass through the intestines. Signs that your pet has eaten Easter grass, aside from the material being visible from the mouth or anus, are vomiting, straining to defecate, and a painful abdomen. Do not try pulling out the visible strings because

it can cause more damage. Call your vet ASAP. On the subject of Easter, real live chicks, bunnies and ducks are really cute, but unfortunately giving them to children as pets often result in an early death for these baby animals due to not getting proper care. If you do decide to get chicks, bunnies, or ducks, please educate your children about responsible pet ownership. We are all busy in our yards caring for the lawn
and flowers using herbicides, fertilizers and insecticides. Take care to store them safely and apply them according to the instructions so as to prevent your pet from ingesting them. If by chance, you do have an emergency when your vet is closed, the Gulf Coast Veterinary Emergency Hospital is open 24/7. SSC Student Matthew Simpson and his sister Elizabeth competed in the Mississippi Spelling Bee held on March 19 in Jackson, MS. Matthew placed second in the Mississippi Spelling Bee two years ago. Yolanda Ni is the winner of the 2019 Mississippi Spelling Bee. Ni is an eighth-grade student at Oak Grove Middle School in the Lamar County School District. She spelled the word “apothecary” for the win.

The Diamondhead Wine Club is dedicated to the exploration and enjoyment of wine. At each monthly tasting, we sample at least 6 different wines and learn a little about their history and origins. For years, American blush or rosé wines were mostly sickly sweet, e.g. white zinfandel. The French have long known that
you can make excellent rosé wines that are dry and even full bodied and some American producers are joining their ranks. A rosé or two would be an excellent spring time wine. Other wines that we taste less frequently are syrah and petit sirah. These can be lush and delicious and many more are becoming available. American producers have also greatly improved their offerings of pinot grigio aka pinot gris. Or, we might stumble across a riesling. Join us and see where A Road Less Travelled leads us. We had many visitors to tour the three homes here; the Flower Show had an interesting variety of plants and single-stem specimens of plants that grow in our coastal area. The floral designs included desert scapes, under water, reflective, and deigns suggesting movement displayed on pedestals. All displayed imaginative use of materials and creative ideas fitting this year’s theme “This Land is Your Land.” At the end of April, the Garden Clubs of Mississippi is hosting

Krewe of Diamondhead’s Mardi Gras ball visits a Night on the Nile By Kathryn Larsen, Publicity Lieutenant
Transported to another place, with camels, pyramids, papyrus grass and wheat seeds adorning the Emerald Ballroom, the Krewe and guests went to Egypt on Feb. 23, 2019. David Sykes, Parade Lieutenant, introduced the mistress of ceremonies, Nicole Boisdore, after the singing of the National Anthem by Krewe member, Marilyn Lott. Others present were acknowledged: Royalty from other Krewes, Boater’s: King Joe and Queen Mary Murray, Krewe of Selene: Queen Pam Marshall; King Wayne Maxwell, Krewe of Olympus: King Kurt Braun; Queen Jeannie Hawkins. Board members from the Krewe of Diamondhead were recognized as were 12 past kings, one of whom is the Queen’s father Chuck Garrison. Next, the leader of the Night on the Nile, Krewe of Diamondhead, Captain Sandy Hatem was introduced, and entered the ballroom. Finally, the court was introduced. From the

Lastly of the court, representing the eternal lovers of Khnum and Satis, the god and goddess of the Blue Nile, Maid Renee Kirschenbaum and Duke John Kirschenbaum entered the ballroom. When the court had taken their places on the stage, the royalty was announced. To the music of the Royal March, Her Royal Highness, Queen Dinah Rhoades came into the ballroom, escorted by her father Chuck Garrison, Ail-I-Honua the 28th.
Queen Dinah wore a transparent, iridescent gold dress in keeping with the traditional queen color. The dress had a sheer scoop neck with sweetheart lace at the bodice with gold sequins and iridescent applique stones to complement the crowns. Standing on the stage, waiting, with great pride, we all welcomed Ali’ I Honua, the 44th, King Ron Rhoades to the music If Ever I Cease to Love You. The king and queen recognized special guests in attendance and previous queens were recognized. Toasts were offered, which led to the first royal dance of the evening, to the tune of “You Make Me Feel Brand New.” A fabulous steak and lobster dinner was followed by dancing to Cowboy Blues Band.

Geaux Hike Club: All of these youthful hikers are at least 70 years old. Yet, they completed 3 miles on the ole RR dummy line now called the Tuxachanie Trail. Johnnie, hike leader, informed the group that Gulfport was founded by the Gulfport-Ship Island RR and once led the world in lumber shipped. The Finkbine RR company built this dummy line to harvest Virgin yellow pine. Today, about all that’s left are few of RR spikes. Shelia from Lousiana returns to hiking after years of being caregiver. Shelia from Michigan never missed a hike, musical or Olli class proving “The only thing that limits us is us.”

Your golf operations staff has been busy this past month hosting two PGA Champions Tour qualifiers, the OCG, the Gulf Coast Women’s Golf Association, a Ping Demo Day, a Mizuno Demo Day, a TaylorMade Demo Day, a high school major championship, as well as several other outings and events. Thank you to all of our staff, our members, and our community for helping make these events successful. We receive a tremendous amount of exposure with these golf events, which helps keep Diamondhead on the top of the list for places to live, stay, and play. We hosted our seventh annual Diamondhead High School Invitational. This event has been a Mississippi High School Major Championship since 2013 and continues to showcase some of the best high school golf teams in the region. This year Picayune High School took home the team title with Hancock High School finishing as team runner-up. Congrats to Picayune’s Cameron Guidry who defended his medalist honors with a 70 (-2) on the Cardinal and to Hancock’s Ty Lamb for making the All-Tournament Team. The third best score of -17 was recorded by Warren Alexander, Chick Baerson and Glenn Conover followed by Lee Bell, Joe Murray and Don Perkins with -16. In the only time PEERS was played Marty Herndon, Joe Murray and Dutch Vandervort led the scoring with +11 followed by Lee Bell, Paul Cain and Dennis Laumann with a -3. In the Closest-to-the-Flag competition, Joe Murray won four times (Yes, that’s correct!) last month to set a record as far as I remember. Glenn Conover and Warren Morgan both won twice. Since we played only a few times, a little history lesson may be of interest. In April 1867, old Tom Morris won his fourth Open Championship by holding off Young Tom Morris, even Older Tom Morris, Extremely Old Tom Morris, two goats and some guy who was promised a bowl of soup for playing. Wow ... how the Open Championship has evolved!

Looks like good old Mother Nature is still trying to play havoc with our golfing. We really are not used to quite this much rainy weather at this time of the year. Oh well, guess on a positive note, Mardi Gras is just around the corner. We did manage to get in our first Tuesday of the month, Trophy Day. And our winners were: Flight #1 — Low Gross — Therese Mauterer, Low Net — Carol Gothie and Low Putts — Marilyn Galus. Flight #2 — Low Gross — Carol Laux, Low Net — Marsha Roberts and Low Putts — Nancy Sislow. And last, but not least, Flight #3 — Low Gross — Dinah Knobloch, Low Net — Mary Murray and Low Putts — Sylvia Corban. Our Longest Drive winners were: Carol Gothie, Pat VanDervort and Mary Murray. Those who came Closest to the Pin were: Marilyn Galus, Marsha Roberts and Carol Laux. On Feb. 12, we planned to play a game of Even Holes, but once again Mother Nature intervened and the round had to be cancelled. The following Tuesday, Feb. 19, we had better luck. Managed to get our game of Low Putts Threesome in shortly before the heavens opened up yet again. And, the 1st Place Team with a total of only 56 Putts for the three member team consisting of Dinah Knobloch, Therese Mauterer and Mary Mizell. There was a tie for 2nd Place with both teams scoring 58 putts. One team was made up of Sylvia Corban, Marilyn Galus and Mary Murray and the other was composed of Shirley Halterman, Dolores Louvier and Marsha Roberts. In addition, Marilyn Galus scored a Chip-In on Hole #11 and Shirley Halterman had one on Hole #18. Very well done, gals! The final Tuesday of Feb. 26, found us playing a fourperson Scramble. The best score of a total of 40 strokes for the team was entered by the team of Kathy Jones, Therese Mauterer, Mary Mizell and Marsha Roberts.

Congrats are also due to Marilyn Galus who had a Chip-in for a Birdie on the 9th Hole of the Cardinal. We are currently signing up for our Founders Day Tournament and Luncheon, which we will play on Tuesday, March 12. Let’s hope Mother Nature liked our Founders and blesses us with decent weather. MOST HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH SPRING 2019 GOLF TOURNAMENT A modified Scramble will be played on the Cardinal course with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 13. The Silver Slipper will provide food on the course and free soft drinks/beer will be available. Henderson Ford will give away a new Ford Fusion to anyone making a hole-in-one on a designated Par 3 while other prizes will be awarded on the remaining three Par 3 holes. Complimentary adult beverages will be available at 3
homes on the course. Teams will play in flights with teams of similar ability. Cash prizes will be awarded at the end of play. The cost to play is $65 per person or $260 per four-person team. The team handicap will be 10% of the handicaps of the four players. No higher than a handicap of 25 will be used for an individual handicap. There’s a maximum of 144 players with two teams starting on every hole. Last year, four teams were turned away because of a full field. Applications are available in the Pro Shop and the church foyer. Turn in your registration form as early as you can to reserve a spot for your team.
