Jimmy Headrick, PGA was recently awarded the prestigious Dr. John and Helen Moore Distinguished Service Award at the 2018 Kelly Gibson Foundation Annual Awards Banquet. This award is given to an individual who has dedicated their life growing and developing the game of golf in the New Orleans area. The Tommy Moore Memorial Junior Golf Championship is held annually in conjunction with the AllState Sugar Bowl.

The event is presented by the Kelly Gibson Foundation.

Dear fellow POA Members, Fall is fast approaching, and our children have returned to school.

We continue our busy lives, and Diamondhead remains a superb place to live.

I'd like to remind everyone to use extra caution in driving through our community, especially when school buses are receiving or discharging our children.

Your POA Board, committees, and employees continue their daily efforts to make Diamondhead special and successfully address the challenges we face as a community. In early September, we were spared from Tropical Storm Gordon. After carefully following the track and participating in conferences with the Hancock County Emergency Operations Center, the POA ceased all operations at the amenities and took actions to secure our facilities.

Our disaster preparedness plans enabled us to shut down in a reasonable amount of time and allowed our employees to return to their homes to take care of personal affairs. Once the storm passed, our General Manager, Tom Koger, charged our POA department heads to share lessons

On behalf of the board, I thank all of our staff members for their dedication to ensuring the safety of our facilities and for their quick return to serve our members.

As I've stated several times, the beginning of the expiration of covenants, in June 2020, is the most critical issue that your board is facing. As you know, we've established the Diamondhead 2020 Committee to study the challenge in-depth.

Each committee member represents one or more areas of interest in Diamondhead including young families and longterm residents.

All of the members utilize our amenities from boating to golf to youth programs and more. The committee is researching all possible options for moving Diamondhead forward and will present them to the board for consideration and eventual action.

In June of this year, you elected us to represent you, and we take our fiduciary responsibility seriously. We will wait for the

2020 Committee to report its findings and follow a course of action in the best interests of Diamondhead as a whole.

The 2020 Committee has and will continue to invite POA members to join them for listening sessions, as they believe that community outreach and input are critical components for developing their recommendations. Social media is abuzz with speculation and rumors about the action the board will take.

This chatter is premature, and there is no accurate or official final board or committee decision on Facebook or in any other media.

If you have questions or concerns about the future of our covenants, I ask that you address them to board members or 2020 Committee members at their email addresses provided on the POA website. Understanding that we all have a financial stake in Diamondhead beyond 2020, we have painstakingly taken a slow and deliberate approach to develop all reasonable courses of action to the covenant expiration issue that confronts us as a community.

I am encouraged by robust attendance at our first two public meetings,

and as we develop as a board, your participation and feedback will be of great assistance. Thank you for your commitment and interest in shaping our future.

MINUTES August 20, 2018 A regular meeting of the Board was held at the Diamondhead Country Club, Diamondhead, MS. President Bob Marthouse chaired the meeting and called it to order at 7:00 PM. Present were President Marthouse, Vice President Craig Harvey, Secretary Karen Rice, Treasurer Bill Hatchett, Director Gary Becker, Director Teresa Ertel, Director Dick Nolan, Director Stewart Nutting, Director Don Silcio, and Ex-Officio Pat Laird.

Also present were General Manager Tom Koger, Controller Darrion McInnis, 2020 Chair Annette Williams and approximately 55 members. Director Jerome Tullier was absent.

Minutes of the July 12, 2018 meeting of the Board of Directors — It was noted by Secretary Rice that the motion to approve the minutes of the July 12, 2018 meeting was approved by unanimous Consent to Action on July 19, 2018.

Opening Remarks were made by President Marthouse. He introduced and welcomed Tom Koger as our new General Manager.

Diamondhead 2020 Committee Recommendation to Dismiss the “Covenants Litigation” – Treasurer Hatchett moved that the Board of Directors accept the recommendation of the Diamondhead 2020 Committee to authorize and instruct legal counsel to take all necessary action to voluntarily dismiss the pending litigation styled In Re: Diamondhead Covenants, in the Chancery Court of Hancock County, Mississippi, Cause No. 23CHI:16-cv-403. Motion was seconded by Director Nutting and passed unanimously.

5. Executive Session meeting time – Secretary Rice moved to set the Executive Sessions for the hour preceding the monthly public meetings.

EAST HANCOCK LIBRARY Fall is in the air! Surely you’ve noticed it’s only 80 outside now!

Well, ok, we might not ever have an exciting change of seasons, but read on because we always have exciting things happening at our library.

The Strength and Flexibility Class has caught on like wildfire. We have added an extra weekly session and extended the classes through October.

Call the library to register for either Mondays or Tuesdays at 10:30. For the Monday group, classes begin October 1 and for

the Tuesday group it will be October 2.

Classes last for one hour.

The classes are the same both days, so choose the day more convenient for you. The goal of the class is to improve range of motion and overall quality of life. While it is geared to older adults, anyone can benefit from strength and flexibility training. Choose a day and come get your Superman or Wonder Woman going on.

Storytime is back! Every Friday at 10:30 East Hancock welcomes the little ones for stories followed by educational crafts that reinforce story concepts.

Another free and local resource for your pleasure.

Make and Create is still happening the first Thursday of each month. This month it will be on October 4 at 10:00, and something different has been added. We will do a Pinterest craft and all supplies will be provided. This month’s activity is “painted rocks,” which surely creative types can make into something outstanding.

This program will be repeated at Kiln library on Friday, October 5 at the same time in case you can’t make it on October 4 or if you have so much fun you want to do it again.

Authors and Characters @ Your Library will be held at the Bay library on Tuesday, October 9 at 11:45

with $10 optional lunch available and payable at the door.

LSD (Literary Society of Diamondhead) is going strong! The group meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 10:30.

After the book discussion, members may choose to extend the fun with lunch at various local restaurants.

Membership is now right at 20 members and usually various configurations of about half continue on to lunch.

Come feed your brain, stomach, and the local economy by joining us at LSD Book Club and lunch this month on October 10.

Halloween safety is a priority for all. As a public service, Kiln Library will hold a Halloween Safety

Program on Tuesday, October 23 at 6:00 in the evening.

Come hear some tips and ideas you may not know of so Trick or Treating can be fun AND safe for all the kiddos out there.

COMMUNITY DIAMONDHEAD COMMUNITY CHURCH 5301 Diamondhead Circle 228-255-5556, dhcommunitychurch.org Worship Services: Services are held Sundays at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Holy Communion is served on the first Sunday of every month. The church has a diverse Music Ministry program. The Chancel Choir is enjoyed during the 10 a.m. service from September through May. Our Wednesday Night Youth Program runs

The six-week program will begin on Tuesday, September 4, 2018. If you or someone you care about has been dealing with emotional pain due to the loss of a spouse or other dearly-loved person, you are

invited to participate. This will be a structured program which will include educational presentations to help us understand our overwhelming feelings of loss and how to better deal with them. It will also provide a safe, caring support group and an opportunity to share our own personal memories and issues.

The goal of these groups is to provide our community with a support vehicle to deal with the difficulties and emotional turbulence that follows the death of a loved one. Grief is a normal human process that all people experience in the course of life. The healthiest healing involves a process of working through the pain. We grieve most effectively when we find ourselves with others who understand and are willing to hear our pain. Don’t leave pets outside on Halloween night – pranksters can tease them and some pets could be agitated by the extra “traffic” near their territory.

Black cats are especially at risk of being harmed around Halloween – many shelters do not adopt out black cats during October as a safety precaution.

keep them confined away from the door so they can’t get spooked by the influx of children in costumes and dart out the door. It’s a good idea to keep Halloween plants, such as pumpkins and corn, out of the reach of animals.

While small amounts can be fed safely to pets; eating uncooked, potentially

moldy, foods can cause big problems. Gastrointestinal upset is possible whenever pets eat something they aren’t used to and eating large pieces can cause blockage. Also, some types of mold can cause neurological problems. You should also keep electric and battery powered decorations out of your pets reach. If pets chew on them they are at risk of electrical shock from chewing on cords or chemical burns from the batteries. Finally, on the chance your pet does escape, be sure your pets are properly ID’d. Collar tags are good, but microchips are best.

Diamondhead’s Carnival season officially opened when the Krewe of Diamondhead had its annual announcement party August 18, 2018, in the Emerald Ballroom. The theme this year, as previously announced, is A Night on the Nile. The Emerald ballroom was tastefully decorated with papyrus fronds, jeweled vases and goblets, with candles illuminating gold chargers for the base.

Current reigning King Kevin Shultze and his Queen wife Sara were seated at their table when the Captain of the Krewe of Diamondhead took the stage to make announcements.

Captain Sandy Hatem recognized the board for their dedication and hard work over the last season.

Captain Sandy then recognized and thanked the current court, King Kevin Schultze, Queen Sara Shultze, Duke David Sykes, Maid Debbie Sykes, Duke Gary Wiley, Maid Jan Wiley, Duke Rich Lindquist, Maid Kathy Lindquist. At the appointed moment, the announcement was made.

The Krewe of Diamondhead’s Royal Court consists of: King Elect Ron Rhoades, Queen Elect Dinah Rhoades, Duke Henry Majors, Maid Penny Majors, Duke John Kirschenbaum, Maid Renee Kirschenbaum, Duke Darryl Davis, Maid Judy Davis.

King elect, Ron Rhodes, Ali i houna XLII and his wife Queen elect Dina will lead The Krewe of Diamondhead into its 42nd year of carnival pleasure as they travel the Nile.

This is an exceptional year with Queen Elect Dinah Rhoades as her

mother is a previous Queen of the Krewe of Diamondhead. This makes Dinah a Legacy Queen. And, Dinah’s daughter was a debutante for another krewe in Diamondhead.

King elect, Ron Rhoades, was born and raised in Decatur, Illinois where his parents were native and his father worked as a career Caterpillar Tractor employee. Ron moved to Champaign, Illinois in 1973 to attend the University of Illinois. He began his career in plastics in 1980 and continues to follow that passion today.

Ron has served as President and C.E.O. of Plastic Container Corporation since 1987. After many years of frequenting the great community of Diamondhead to visit loved ones and enjoy the local hospitality, the Rhoades family moved here in 2007.

Ron and his wife Dinah have a son and daughter who graduated from Hancock High School and subsequently earned degrees from Mississippi State and Alabama.

King elect Ron continues to travel to his factories in Illinois and Tennessee while enjoying home in Diamondhead. The Rhoades’ joined the Krewe of Diamondhead in 2007 and they are proud to salute all the past Kings and Queens of the Krewe including Chuck and Til Garrison, parents of Ron’s wife, Dinah.

Queen elect, Dinah Rhoades, was born in Carbondale, Illinois. She lived with her parents, Chuck and Til Garrison, King and Queen of the Krewe of Diamondhead 2003, and her siblings, Jill and Scott. After high school, she attended the University

After graduation, her sister and brother recruited Dinah to Dallas, TX where she lived for two years. As an adult, she moved back to Champaign, IL where she originally attended college and met her future husband within the first 2 weeks. Ron and Dinah have been happily married for 30 years and have two wonderful children, Adam, age 27, and Kelly, age 22.

Dinah has enjoyed a plethora of exciting RN positions including clinics, hospitals, family practice, home health, American Red Cross, and school nursing.

She enjoys traveling, gardening, and entertaining. Along with the Krewe of Diamondhead, she has been an 11 year member of Diamondhead Boaters, PEO Chapter U, and DH Women’s Club.

Throughout her 11 year residence, she has been a member and has served on boards of Krewe of Olympus, Selene, Diamondhead Community Association, Noise Abatement Team, Newcomers, and attends the Diamondhead Community Church.

Penny (Chauvin) Majors moved to Diamondhead in 1989.

Since marrying Henry, they have joined the Boater’s Association Krewe & the Krewe of Diamondhead. Penny is currently serving as the treasurer of the DH Women’s Club and is an active member of the Most Holy Trinity Ladies Club.

in the Summer of 2009. John works in the engineering group at Chemours and Renee is a Sales and Campaign Coordinator with Lamar Advertising. John serves on the Diamondhead Water and Sewer Board. Both John and Renee served on various committees and boards when called upon. John and

Renee joined the Krewe of Diamondhead in 2016 Darryl and Judy Davis were both born and raised in New Iberia, Louisiana. They were high school sweethearts, and married in 1984. Darryl joined the United States Marine Corps in 1982, and retired in 2010.

Upon retirement, they moved to Diamondhead in August of 2010.

Darryl is presently employed with Seemann Composites in Gulfport. Judy is a Real Estate Broker, and has her own Brokerage firm, Davis Properties of Diamondhead. They absolutely love the Diamondhead area, and are very active in Krewe of Diamondhead, Boaters of Diamondhead, Marine Corps League, VFW, Diamondhead Women’s Club, Bible Sistas. Hobbies include golf, canoeing, RVing and Boating.

DIAMONDHEAD WINE CLUB The Diamondhead Wine Club is dedicated to the exploration and enjoyment of wine. At each monthly tasting, we sample at least 6 different wines and learn a little about their history and origins. The Club is open to any who are interested in enjoying and learning about wine.

DIAMONDHEAD POST 2880 ANNOUNCES PATRIOT’S PEN 2018-19 THEME: “WHY I HONOR THE AMERICAN FLAG” PATRIOTIC ESSAY WRITING CONTEST

DIAMONDHEAD GARDEN CLUB Gardeners, are you looking for plants that are attractive, easy to care for and grow, and like shade? Come to the October Diamondhead Garden Club Meeting on Wednesday October 17 at the Diamondhead Country Club. Our speaker Michael Seals from The Funny Farm in Poplarville will share with us information about bromeliads, tilandias, and other similar plants; Michael will tell us where to grow them, what type of soil to or none at all, and how to care for these plants embellishing his talks with interesting and funny stories. He often brings plants for purchase with the prices varying with the type of plant.

Two of our members Marilyn Bliler and Teresa Lake are taking a flower design class under the direction of Dr. Jim DelPrince; this design class lasts 14 weeks so they will have much info flower arranging to share with us. Garden Club is always interested in flower design since these are part of our Flower Show each spring.

Also in the planning stage is a field trip to the Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium New Orleans in late October. VFW POST 2880 Diamondhead VFW Post 2880 conducted a Flag Retirement ceremony on August 14, with assistance from Boy Scout Troop 210 of Diamondhead, followed by a cookout at the Twin Lake Pavilion. Over 1,000 old U.S. flags were retired and disposed of through incineration as set forth by traditional guidelines. It was truly an outstanding presentation by Scout Troop 210 members. A special thanks to Comrade Dave Motz who directed the ceremony.

Also on this night the “Scout of The Year Award” was presented to Thomas Konkel, Scout Troop 210 of Diamondhead.

Following formal ceremonies, great food and refreshments were enjoyed by all.

DIAMONDHEAD POST 2880 ANNOUNCES VOICE OF DEMOCRACY 2018-19 THEME: “WHY MY VOTE MATTERS” PATRIOTIC AUDIO ESSAY COMPETITION Grand Prize: $30,000 Award Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW’s) premier scholarship program. Each

year, nearly 40,000 high school students compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is, “Why My Vote Matters.” Prizes and scholarships are awarded at the Post, District, state and national level. Department (State) winners receive an all-expensepaid trip to Washington, D.C., March 2-6, 2019, to tour the city, be honored by the VFW and its Auxiliary and receive their portion of $154,000 in national awards, the top scholarship being $30,000.

The Voice of Democracy is open to students in grades 9-12.

Students who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the United States, its territories and possessions; or in an overseas U.S. military/civilian dependent school. All entries begin at the local VFW Post level. The only exception is where schools/classes/youth groups have large numbers of students and wish to conduct their own competition, submitting one winner for each 15 students to the local VFW Post.

VFW Post 2880 Golf Tournament The Post held it’s annual charity golf tournament on 15 September at the Diamondhead Cardinal Course. A big Thanks to all the volunteers who worked so hard to make this event a big success. Due to weather and an early deadline for this article, we actually played only twice as a group. In the POINTS format the team of Gene Demedicis, Maty Herndon, Pat Jarrell and Tony Palmature recorded a +12 followed by Paul Cain, Billy Stroud, Bill Vandervort and a Ghost with +11. The team of Ray Badgett, Dave Gibbons, Chuck Ingraham and Frank Morrow came in third with a +9.

The SHAMBLE format had some outstanding team scores led by Paul Cain, Billy Stroud, Tom Woolbright and a Ghost with a -45.

That means that they averaged 2.5 points below par on every hole. Wow! A – 42 team score was recorded by Warren Alexander, Don Hertel, Ernie Knobloch and Tony Palamature in second place.

The third place score of -38 was shot by Pat Jarrell, Pat Laird, Dave Stein and Don Perkins.

Sixty players played in the Member-Member 5 match event.

The Nicklaus Flight was won by Billy Stroud and Curtis Blanchard followed by Chad Curtis and Robbie Russell while third place was earned by Tom Begley and Bill Hatchett.

The Palmer flight ended with Ken Forman and Jim Bulger in first place (score of 35 points which was the highest in the entire tournament) followed by Dave Beckner and Mark Singer and then Norwood Landreneau and Vince Altese.

In the Player flight Billy Meighen and Tony Chaisson led the way followed by Mike Sheffield and Jerry Jones and then Tommy Guidroz and Dave Ciolino. George Safcak and Larry Osburn came in first in the Hogan flight with Robbie Reidenauer and Harold Bevan and then Robert Walters and Tom Baum as additional winners.

The Snead flight was won by Jere Hess and Albert Ragas while Tom Woolbright and Charlie Weber came in second with Dennis Laumann and Pat Donnes earning third place honors.

Real golfers don’t cry when

the weather this year but the girls of the DWGA are a strong lot and give it a try as often as we can.

These are the results for the following play days. Good friends, good weather, and fun.

By the way we need to first congratulate Teresa Ertel for an EAGLE she had during play with the DWGA. This was done while playing the game of get the hell back scramble from the black tees on hole #10. We need to keep her away from the black tees for sure.

On May 17 our game was Cha Cha Cha. The winners were 1st Place Team Betty Bowen, Terri Woolbright, and Margaret Papaleo. 2nd Place Team was Vicki Stein, Georgeann Luxion, Jo Weber, and Patty Hourin.

The 3rd place Team was Sharon Malochee, Rita Durham, Carol Kirschenbaum, and Phyllis Lilly. There were no birdies on this date. There was one chip in

by Claudine Holmes on hole #5.

Closest to the pin were #4-Lotti Williams, $7-Claudine Holmes, #13-Cathy Weber, and #17-Ok Sang Hall.

On May 23 our game was Scotch Doubles. We were lucky to have a male partner with each lady.

The winners for the 1st First flight were 1st-Sharon Malochee/ Charles Weber, 2nd-Ok Sang and Larry Hall. 3rd was a tie of Becky and David Stritzel/Lottie and Harrison Williams. 2nd Flight

winners were 1st-Patty Hourin/ Bill Blackwood, 2nd-Vicki and David Stein, 3rd-again a tie with Margaret and Dennis Papaleo and Rosa Humphry/Paul Wyrosdick. There was some good comradery that day, I am sure.

On May 31 the game was a scramble. The 1st place Team winners were Teresa Ertel, Terri Garrett, and Colleen Jones. The 2nd place Team winners were Lottie Williams, Becky Stritzel, JJ Skinner, and Rosa Humphrey.

The 3rd place team winners were Ok Sang Hall, Marian Wideman, and Jo Webre. Birdies given up that day were for Georgeann Luxion, Teresa Ertel, and Patty Hourin.

Closet to the Pin for that date includes #4-Teresa Ertel, #7-Ok Sang Hall, #13-Dianne Ackerman, and #17-Terri Woolbright.

Chip-ins were recorded by Teresa Ertel and Ok Sang Hall. Looks like Teresa worked it out that day!

On June 7 it was Trophy Day. The overall net winner was Sharon Malochee.

1st Flight winner was a tie between Dianne Ackerman and Jodi Crosby.

The 2nd Flight winners were: 1st-Cathy Weber and 2nd-Colleen Jones.

The 3rd Flight winners were: 1st Rosa Humphrey and 2ndVivian Strader. Birdies for this date included those from Jodi Crosby, Teresa Ertel, Colleen Jones, Sharon Malochee (2), and Becky Stritzel. Closet to the Pin winners were #4-Teresa Ertel, #7-Dianne Ackerman, #13-Sharon Malochee, and #17-Teresa Ertel. Chip-Ins included Jodi Crosby, Teresa Ertel, Colleen Jones, and Marian Wideman.

On June14 it was President’s Cup/Red and Black.

1st flight winners were 1stTeresa Ertel, 2nd Jodi Crosby. 2nd flight winners were 1st-Terri Woolbright, 2ndCathy Weber. 3rd flight winners were 1st-Rosa Humphrey, 2nd-Judy Amox. There were no birdies or chip-ins that day but we did a closest to the pin winner. Teresa Ertel earned two chip-ins with holes #4 and #7.

On June 21 our game was Individual Points. 1st Flight winners with a tie for 1st was Marian Wideman and Rita Durham, 3rd Becky Stritzel. 2nd Flight winners were 1st-Billie Crowley, and again a tie for 2nd with Terri Garrett, Colleen Jones, Bev Cox, Judy Amox, and Margaret Papaleo. Birdies that day were from Rita Durham, Terri Garrett, and Margaret Papaleo. Chip-ins were from Terri Garrett and Becky Stritzel. We had only 3 closest to the pin and they were #2-Vicki Stein, #6 Colleen Jones, and #13-Marian Wideman.

On June 28 we held a Pal’s Tournament. We buddied up with another golfer and competed. 1st Flight winners were: 1st PlaceTerri Woolbright and Betty Bowen, 2nd-Marian Wideman and Georgeann Luxion, and 3rd-Sharon Malochee and Cassandra Godbold. 2nd Flight winners were 1st-Ruth Holmes and Claudine Holmes, and a tie

for 2nd with Colleen Jones/ Rosa Humphrey and Jo Webre/Margaret Papaleo.

Ruth Holmes and Betty Bowen each had a birdie.

Claudine Holmes, Betty Bowen (2), and Marian Wideman each had chip ins. Closest to the pin winners were #2-Betty Bowen, #6-Dianne Ackerman, #13-Dianne Ackerman, and #15-Cathy Weber.

On July 5 we had Trophy Day. The winner overall was Pat Ellis with a gross score of 88. First flight winners were: 1st Rita Durham and 2nd Betty Bowen. Second Flight winner were 1st Joanne Fried and 2nd Judy Amox.

Pat Ellis had 2 birdies.

There were no chip-ins but the closest to the pins were Pat Ellis on #4. 7. And 13.

PHEW! Ok Sang Hall was on #17.

The next play date we could play was July 26 and the game was Beat the Pro. These were all the winners: Dianne Ackerman, Cathy Weber, Marian Wideman, Terri Woolbright, Colleen Jones, Beverly Cox, Terrie Garrett, Margaret Papaleo, Joanne Fried, and Amy Swint. I would say the DWGA did quite well.

On August 2nd we played Trophy Day. The overall winner was Debbie Wolf with a gross score of 85. The other winners were: First Flight: 1st -Dianne Ackerman, 2ndGeorgeann Luxion, 3rdBetty Bowen. The Second Flight winners were: 1st-

Becky Stritzel. A tie for 2nd with Terri Woolbright, Marian Wideman, and Cathy Weber. Third Flight winners were: 1st-Patty Hourin, 2nd-Judy Amox, and3rd-Margaret Papaleo.

Birdies were by Terri Woolbright, Dianne Ackerman, and Becky Stritzel. Closest to the pin winners were #4 and #17 Terri Woolbright, #7 Cathy Weber, and #13 Betty Bowen.

On August 9 we played “2 Best Balls”. First place Team was Betty Bowen, Becky Stritzel, Judy Amox, and Beverly Cox. Second Place Team was OK Hall, Cathy Weber, Amy Swint, and Patty Hourin. The third Place Team was Georgeann Luxion, Lottie Williams, Billie Crowley, and Margaret Papaleo.

Birdies were from Dianne Ackerman and Georgeann Luxion who had 2. Closest to the pin winners were: #4-tty Bowen, #7-Billie Crowley, #13-Joanne Fried, and #17-Betty Bowen. Chip ins were from Amy Swint, Georgeann Luxion, Rita Durham, and Dianne Ackerman.

The next play date we were able to play was on August 23 with the game “Get the Hell Back Scramble.” Would you believe we had a 5 way tie for first with a 71 and the other teams were way back with a 72!! These are the teams who placed first: Teresa Ertel, Cathy Weber, Carol Kirschenbaum, and Patty Hourin. The next team was Ok Hall, Lottie

Williams, JJ Skinner, and Jo Webre. The next team was Pat Ellis, Vicki Stein, Judy Amox, and Margaret Papaleo. The final team was Jodi Crosby, Rita Durham, Colleen Jones, and Beverly Cox. There was one birdie

DWGAN GOLFING NEWS FROM AUGUST 2018

Well, it does appear that our number of play days has improved. We actually managed to get in three of our four scheduled rounds during the month of August. Only the threat of lightening caused our last Tuesday to be cancelled.

We really are looking forward to more, and cooler, play days next month.

The first Tuesday of each month is our “Trophy” play day and winnings are given for Low Gross, Low Net & Low Putts in each Flight plus Longest Drive and Closest-to-the-Pin in each Flight. The August winners were as follows: Flight #1 - Low Gross = Theresa Mauterer, Low Net = Pat VanDervort, and Low Putts = Ann Nutting. Flight #2 - Low Gross = Kitty Gregoire, Low Net = Martha Bryan, and Low Putts = Ruthie O’Neill. Flight #3 Low Gross = Fran Smith, Low Net = Mary Murray, and Low Putts = Dinah Knobloch. Pat VanDevort

took honors for the Longest Drive in the first flight, but no one garnered that spot in either the 2nd or 3rd Flights.

In the Closest-to-the-Pin competition the results were: Flight #1 - Pat VanDervort, no one scored in Flight #2, Mary Murray won in Flight #3, and Martha Bryan in the Black Flight. A Chip-In was also gotten by Dinah Knobloch on hole #1. (As a point of explanation: Our courses now have official PGA rated Black Tees. Should you choose to play from these closer tees your handicap is adjusted accordingly.

These tees provide an opportunity for golfers who do not drive the ball as far to reach the green in regulation.

On August 14th we played a Schamble. For those unfamiliar with this term, simply put each player in the group tees off. The longest/best tee shot is chosen and from then on each player plays her own ball and the team with the best overall score wins. The First Place Winners were the team of Beryl Laird, Theresa Mauterer, Darlene Park and Marsha Roberts.

The Second Place Team was made up of Sylvia Corban, Carole Griffin, Ruthie O’Neill, and Pat VanDervort. And, finally, the Third Place Team (playing with a Ghost) was comprised of Shirley Hal-

terman, Kathy Jones and Dinah Knobloch. In addition, Chip-Ins were gotten by four players: Marsha Biestek (Hole #15), Linda DeParto (Hole #15), Shirley Halterman (Hole #15) and Mary Mizell (Hole #17).

Seems as though Hole #15 was a lucky number for some players.

Black Marks was the name of the game on the following Tuesday.

During this game you record a Black Mark on your score card each time you: are in the water, in the sand, out of bounds or putt three times on the green.

Winners are those players who have the least number of these Black Marks for their round.

We only had enough players for two flights, and the winners were: Flight #1 - Judi Brandon with not even one black mark, Shirley Halterman with just one black mark and Pat VanDervort with only three black marks.

Flight #2 - Marsha Roberts with only one black mark, and there was a 2nd Place Tie with both Beryl Laird and Carol Wyrosdick scoring four black marks each. A Birdie was scored

by Shirley Halterman on Hole #6.

Our congratulations to all who ventured out on this hot muggy day.

September should be great providing we can get some cooler, less humid, days and continue to keep the hurricanes away from our shores.
