Diamondhead sign ordinance regulates political signs Since the political election season has started, we are starting to see political campaign signs in the City of Diamondhead. I wanted to remind our community of the City sign ordinance as it relates to political signs.

Section 10.7 Exempt Signs. It states “a. Any

political sign or poster not exceeding three (3) square feet erected on property by the owner thereof or with the property owner’s consent pertaining to a candidacy or issue to be voted upon at any election or referendum, provided such sign or poster shall not be erected more than sixty

(60) days prior to such election or referendum and shall be removed within seven (7) days after the referendum, or last such election in which the candidate is eligible. All signs must have the name and contact information for the individual placing the sign.”

The intent of this message is to provide information regarding what is acceptable and prohibited for political signs. The City encourages all persons to follow the above regulations. However, signs that are placed in prohibited

areas will be picked up by the City.

Airport project finished

Join us at the Diamondhead Memorial Day Event on Saturday, May 26, 2018, at 11:00 AM under the Oaks at the Diamondhead Country Club Circle honoring those heroes who have preserved the freedom we enjoy today. The guest speaker will be Dave Flowers. A concert will begin at 10:45 AM and the Memorial Service will follow at 11:00 AM. Diamondhead has a rich military heritage with veterans from World War II to the current conflicts. The sponsors of the service are VFW Post 2880, the Diamondhead Country Club and Property Owners Association, Inc. and the City of Diamondhead. Thanks to our member’s dues, the Asphalt Contractor, our great maintenance crew headed by Steven Smith, and member volunteers our Airport is now the finest one on the Gulf Coast.

This project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. This shows what our community can accomplish when we work together.

Congratulations and thanks to our Diamondhead Residents. Your Airport is now in first class condition.

BUSINESS FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK I want to thank all of the candidates who have chosen to run for the POA Board of Directors. We need good people to contribute to our community. The POA will be providing information on each candidate, as well as forums so that you can hear each one describe his or her qualifications.

One of the many other hats that I wear is that of Junior Vice Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 2880 in Diamondhead. I am responsible for our Memo-

rial Day celebration. This year it is on Saturday, May 26, at 11:00. We have a very good guest speaker in David Flowers. I anticipate that he will give a very inspirational talk. I invite all of the citizens of Diamondhead to come out and to participate in the festivities.

This will be a short letter simply because I do not want to detract from any of the highly qualified people who are eager to serve on the Board of Directors for the Diamondhead Property Owners Association.

MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS DIAMONDHEAD COUNTRY CLUB AND PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION, INC. FEBRUARY 19, 2018 A Regular Meeting of the Board was held at NVision Solutions, Inc, Diamondhead, Mississippi. President P. Laird chaired the meeting and called it to order at 5:45pm.

Present were: President Laird, Vice President Finley, Treasurer Allen, Secretary Sislow, Director Ertel, Director Harvey, Director Montjoy, Director Nolan, Director Silcio and Ex-Officio Fletcher (arrived at 5:55pm). Absent was: Director Tullier. Also present was D. McInnis, POA Controller and Attorney Tubertini (arrived at 6pm).

Minutes – The minutes from the meeting of January 22, 2018 were approved.

Opening Remarks –President Laird had no opening remarks.

Financial Report –No report was provided.

Old Business: Tennis Budget – A motion to clarify that the approved funds to complete 2017 tennis upgrade will be by adding $10,000 of budgeted contingency in the 2018 capital budget to the total allocated in 2017 and 2018, reducing the contingency fund by $10, 000 (Exhibit” A.1”) was made by Director Montjoy and seconded by Director Harvey. The motion passed unanimously.

Airport Resurfacing – A motion to clarify that the approved funds to complete the airport resurfacing will be by adding $10,000 of budgeted contingency to the total budgeted in 2018, reducing the contingency fund by $10, 000 (Exhibit” A.2”) was made by Director Harvey and seconded by Director Ertel. The motion passed unanimously.

Bylaws Revisions: Status – Attorney Tubertini is ready for Board input and will provide a draft to President Laird, and Directors Harvey and Nolan.

401(k) Plan Administrator – A motion to appoint an additional 401(k) Plan Administrator, which shall be the person employed as POA Controller (Darrion McInnis currently holds the position), due to the departure of B. Woodward was made by President Laird and seconded

by Vice President Finley. The motion passed.

New Business:

Recreation Budget – A motion to approve bid to resurface Country Club pool deck from ASP of Gulfport not to exceed $46,225 as budgeted in the Capital Budget was made by Director Silcio and seconded by Director Harvey. Yea: Laird, Sislow, Ertel, Harvey, Nolan, Silcio; Nay: none; Abstain: Allen, Fletcher. The motion passed.

A motion to approve the purchase of play structure from AAA State of Play not to exceed $10,000 as budgeted in the Capital Budget was made by Director Silcio and seconded by Director Harvey. Yea: Laird, Sislow, Ertel, Harvey, Nolan, Silcio, Fletcher; Nay: none; Abstain: Allen. The motion passed.

A motion to approve sand filter and media replacement bid from ASP of Gulfport not to exceed $2300 as budgeted was made by Director and seconded by Director Harvey. Yea: Laird, Sislow, Ertel, Harvey, Nolan, Silcio, Fletcher; Nay: none; Abstain: Allen. The motion passed.

Swim Club- A motion to charge the Diamondhead (MS) Volcanoes Swim Team $1000 for swimming pool rental and requiring commercial general liability insurance naming the POA as additional insured, was made

by President Laird and seconded by Director Harvey.

Yea: Laird, Finley, Sislow, Ertel, Harvey, Fletcher; Nay: none; Abstain: Allen, Nolan, Silcio. The motion passed.

Executive Session – A motion to adjourn to Executive Session to address pending and threatened litigation, operation of the Board, sensitive administrative matters and sensitive Human Resource matters was made by President Laird and seconded by Director Montjoy. The motion passed unanimously. The Board entered Executive Session at 6:27PM and returned to regular session at 7:50PM. Next meeting – The next meeting of the Board of Directors will be an open Board Meeting to be held March 16, 2018 at 6:00PM at the Diamondhead Country Club Emerald Ballroom.

PUBLIC SERVICES KEEP DIAMONDHEAD BEAUTIFUL Keep America Beautiful Affiliate With the guidance of numerous dedicated volunteers, Keep Diamondhead Beautiful continues to accomplish projects that focus on preventing litter, promoting recycling, planting trees, and community beautification.

Notable previous accomplishments have provided a solid foundation for future endeavors: Received Presidents Circle award from Keep American Beautiful recognizing exemplary performance in creating clean, green and beautiful communities.

Landscaped entrance to Diamondhead on Kapalama Planted 15 live oak trees on Airport Blvd and 28 on Diamondhead Drive East, and received a grant from Keep America Beautiful and Lowe’s to provide for planting of 65 more live oak trees on Diamondhead Drive.

Cleared corner at back community entrance and installed landscape improvements and welcome sign.

Assisted Girl Scouts in planting azaleas at Maluhia Community Garden.

Assisted Boy Scouts in planting trees at City Hall Exercise and Fitness Trail.

Initiated landscape and appearance improvements at I-10 interchange.

Purchased and installed holiday decorations at community entrances.

Objectives for 2018 include the following priorities: Install larger flag and pole at main community entrance and move existing flag and pole to back community entrance.

Place donated fountain at prominent location.

Remove dead and dying shrubs along Gex Drive.

Develop beautification projects for Plaza parking and business areas.

Host two-day workshop in late May or early June in conjunction with Mississippi Urban Forest Council and Flower Growers of Mississippi.

All projects are made possible through the generosity and commitment of caring individuals, local business partners, the POA, and the City of Diamondhead.

EAST HANCOCK LIBRARY Mary Gobert Hope everyone is enjoying this wonderful cool weather, particularly since we are rounding the bend into summer in south Mississippi! You will need to find a nice shade tree for outdoor reading soon enough!!

We’ve had a fantastic start to a new endeavor at East Hancock Library. Last month 11 people gathered for the first official meeting of the LSD (Literary Society of Diamondhead) Book Club! Our first book was The Wife Between Us. It sparked some spirited discussion that was enjoyed by all. This month we are reading The Pecan Man by Cassie Selleck. Each month suggestions are made by group members and the next book is chosen. If at any time you’d like to join us, we meet at 10:30 on the second Wednesday of the month. MAKE AND CREATE sessions are held each month on the first Thursday from 10 to noon at East Hancock Library. Come join other crafters and artists on Thursday, May 3rd! In addition, Cathy Shropshire, PhD, will present the theatrical incarnation of Fannye herself, having performed as Miss Cook in venues throughout Mississippi. It helps if lawns are cut close and shrubs are trimmed – that keeps the lawn drier so its harder for fleas and ticks to survive. Chemical sprays should be avoided – they can kill fleas and ticks but can also harm your pets and the people who hug them. If you do have to treat a lawn, only treat areas where you’ve seen fleas.

Put on white socks pulled up to your knees, slowly walk around in the areas where your pets like to wander. If fleas are there they will jump on your socks and you’ll see them. If there are a lot of pests in your yard and you decide you must spray look for safety advice from the Natural Resources Defense Council’s GreenPawn Product Guide. CLUB NEWS DIAMONDHEAD WOMEN’S CLUB The April meeting of the Diamondhead Women’s Club was a planning meeting for our “Glitzy Girlz” fundraiser, April 17th. Ticket sales, along with some wonderful auction items, point to a successful fundraising event! There will be pictures and more details in the upcoming issue of the Diamondhead News!

Our last meeting, (we do not meet in June, July, or August), will be on Wednesday, May 2nd at 11:00 at the Country Club. Blake Kaplan, Executive Editor for the Sun Herald newspaper, will be the speaker. The subject of how journalists come up with stories and editorials should be an interesting topic.

We are looking forward to another “Dip and Sip” fundraising time in the month of June, with Sylvia Corban as our instructor! It should be lots of fun! Dates and times will be announced in the May issue of this publication.

DIAMONDHEAD GARDEN CLUB The Diamondhead Garden Club had custom ordered weather for the Coast Pilgrimage Home Tour and Flower Show. The houses were lovely and interesting to tour and the Flower Show exhibits were outstanding. If you missed this year, plan to come next year to one or both.

Our flower show winners were: Arboreal Awards to Joyce Barnes and Mary Street; Awards of Merit to Diane Miller, Penny Crawford, Joyce Hunt, and Linda Naron; Horticulture Excellence to Linda Naron and Karen Rice; Grower’s Choice to Nydia Benard and Teresa Lake; and Horticulture Sweepstakes to Karen Rice for having the most 1st place awards in Horticulture. Floral Design Awards went to: “Fresh Veggies are the Best” to Karen Rice; “The kids are at Grammas” to Diane Domangue; “The Garden Club Tea” to Diane Domangue; “Shrimp boil on the beach” to Marilyn Bliler who won the “Best in Show” for design.

On Wednesday May 16, the Garden Club speaker will be Christian Stephenson, Hancock County Extension Agent, who will speak on “Garden Critters”. Some critters are of benefit and others we don’t want to hang around even one day. Christian will share with us ways to deal with both. Since this is our final meeting of the 2017-18 garden year, this is our End of the Year luncheon which will convene at 10 am at the Diamondhead Country Club. In September our meeting will be on Wednesday Sept. 19; come join us to explore our gardening habitats and interesting ideas to use as you garden in 2018-19.

DIAMONDHEAD GARDEN CLUB FLOWER SHOW The Diamondhead Garden Club held their annual flower show on April 4th and 5th in Conjunction with the Spring Pilgrimage. There were over a hundred horticultural specimens and 16 floral designs.

This year’s theme wad “Gracious Gardening on the Coast” following the state president’s theme of “Gracious Gardening” Fourteen of the floral designs featured were intended for the home table setting and in a way that you could sit and eat from them. The remaining four designs were strictly for exhibition and used table setting items but in a way that you could not eat from them.

Garden club member Marilyn Bliler won the Table Artistry Award for her design interpretation of “Shrimp Boil on the Beach” Also winning Blue Ribbons for designs were Dianne Domangue, and Karen Rice.

Linda Naron won the Horticultural Excellence Award for her exotic and beautiful “Nuns Orchid” while Karen Rice won the Sweepstakes Award for the most Blue Ribbons won in the Horticulture Division with 19. Talk about a “Green Thumb”

VFW POST 2880

By Donald E. Ball, Adjutant Diamondhead VFW Post 2880 held it's monthly meeting on 4 April 2018. Prior to conducting our regular business, we were privileged to have US Congressman Steve Palazzo as our guest speaker. He presented Vietnam War 50th commemoration books, and a Vietnam Veteran Proclamation signed by President Trump to 28 Vietnam Veterans. Congressman Palazzo delivered an outstanding speech to the Post while recognizing each Vietnam Veteran by name. It was probably the largest crowd we have had at a Post meeting.

After the ceremony Post Commander Jerry Peppenger called our Post business meeting to order with the pledge of allegiance to the flag and opening prayer by Adjutant Ball. District 1 Senior Vice Commander Patrick McCarthy addressed the Post on the upcoming District meeting on 5 May and encouraged members to attend that meeting. We appreciated his visit and are grateful for his leadership and continued support. In fact he stated that he was impressed at the way Post 2880 conducts business and supports veterans programs.

Quartermaster Doug Maxwell read a letter from the VFW National Home for Children. A motion was made to donated $300.00 to the home and approved by a vote of members.

Senior Vice Commander Don Crosby reported on the memorial ceremony performed by our Post for deceased Post member Vincent Thompson. He also reported on his and Adjutant Don Ball's recent meeting with the State Commander and State Adjutant. State Commander Norman Copeland congratulated Post 2880 for it's outstanding service to veterans, and especially our support to homeless veterans.

Reed Walker reported on our upcoming poppy drive for Memorial Day in May. We still need 12 more volunteers to man poppy stations.

The election of new VFW Post 2880 officers was conducted at the meeting. By acclamation all current officers were re-appointed with the exception of the Quartermaster position. Leonard R Servield was elected as the new Quartermaster by a majority vote of members.

Post officers are: Commander, Jerry Peppenger; Senior Vice Commander, Donald Crosby; Junior Vice Commander Donald Laird; Chaplain, Robert Garrett; Quartermaster, Leonard Servield; 1st Trustee, Bob Meith; 2nd Trustee, Walter Piper; 3rd Trustee, Charles Ingraham.

New member Bob Emry was sworn in by Commander Peppenger. After many years of faithful and outstanding service as Post Quartermaster, Doug Maxwell is stepping down. His expertise and dedication will be missed.

The meeting adjourned with a closing prayer and salute to the flag of our great nation.

The good will of the Veterans of Foreign Wars reaches far beyond the realm of veterans helping veterans. In fact, direct involvement with America’s youth and communities has always been — and always will be — a VFW priority.

Here in Diamondhead, Mississippi, VFW Post 2880 is an All-State recognized Post that continually supports multiple programs to aid veterans and their community. We work with local community entities to gather much needed clothing and household goods to support homeless veterans. With the assistance of Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System VFW Post 2880 has been able to donate these collected items to a distribution site in

direct support to the homeless veterans.

Over the course of the calendar year we honor Veterans and their families. VFW Post 2880 has a long standing tradition of sponsoring a Memorial Service and remembrance ceremony on Memorial Day Weekend. We host an annual Golf tournament to gather much needed operating funds to sustain the Post. We hold an annual Veterans Days parade with the support of the community and the local High School Junior ROTC unit. The Post also holds an annual Christmas Party to recognize participants in VFW sponsored educational programs like the Voice of Democracy, Patriots Pen, Scout of the Year, and Teacher of the Year. We also provide direct assistance to the annual Toys for Tots program.

The VFW’s Buddy Poppy program raises over $13 million annually for needy veterans. Post 2880 Diamondhead is a leader in the local area for the distribution of the Buddy Poppy. We can be seen frequently over holiday weekends volunteering to hand them out free in the

In 2014 Craig was elected a Director on the POA Board. He has had perfect attendance at board meetings and served on nearly every committee. Craig Harvey His business acumen has been a consistent driver in improving POA business procedures and the POA “bottom line” leading to reduced dues without compromising the quality and availability of the amenities. He has been an adamant supporter of youth recreation as well as mainstream amenities.

The Emerald Coast Golf Tour just played our golf course in late April in conjunction with the Silver Slipper Pro-Am Golf Classic. The ECGT is a developmental professional golf tour based out of the Destin area. PGA Tour players Bubba Watson, Boo Weekley, Heath Slocum, Joe Durant, and many others competed on this tour before moving on to the big stage.

Many have been asking and we now have our Summer Junior Golf Clinics scheduled. Two separate clinics will take place with the first running from June 4 – 7 and the second from July 16 – 19. The ABCD 2 BB format was played three times since the last article. The best scoring in this format was an outstanding -29 score posted by Tom O’Connell, Tony Palature, Fred Richoux and Bill Roofner. Wow! Team scores of -25 were recorded by Don Crosby, Bob Roth, Tyrone Sartin, Dutch VanDervort and Gene Demedicis, Marty Herndon, Robert S. Smith and Dick Brown.

PEERS POINTS was played once where a plus score is better than a minus score. No team recorded a plus score. The best scores of -6 were shot by Dick Armstrong, Charles Cangelosi, Ron Rech, Bob Terry, Chich Baerson, Tony Palmature and Tyrone Sartin. There was a ghost somewhere in this scoring. The actual team scores ranged from a – 6 to a -25. An interesting point is that a team composed of some of our better players recorded the -25 team score. The best individual scores were Ron Rech (+7), Tony Palmature(+4), and Bob Gregoire(+4).

In the ABCD POINTS the team of Gene Demedicis, Roger Marquez, Marty Herndon and Tony Palmature recorded a +15, followed by Don Perkins, Bernie Breen, Bill Roofner and Tryone Sartin with +11. Bernie Breen recorded a +17 by himself. He was tested for Performance Enhancing Drugs after play but nothing illegal was found. The +17 score is the highest I can ever remember with the DMGA. In the Closest to the Flag competition, no player won twice since the last article. However, Gene Sullivan did make a Hole-in-One on # 4 of the Cardinal. Some of the new rules for 2019 from the R&A and the USGA include: 1) Players will drop their ball, when required, from knee height 2) The penalty stroke for accidently striking the ball more than once in the course of a stoke has been removed. You will simply count the one stroke they made to strike the ball 3) A new LOCAL RULE will be available permitting committees to allow golfers the option to drop their ball in the vicinity of where the ball is lost or out of bounds, under the twostroke penalty. The LOCAL RULE is not intended for higher levels of play, such as professional or elite level competition.

By Shirley Halterman The merry month of March is upon us and fortunately has brought better weather. We did much better weatherwise after the first Tuesday which ended up being cold and rainy causing our Trophy Day to be cancelled.

Additionally early this month, we suffered the loss of

one of our long time members and Rules Chairman, JoAnne Carlson. Her passing came suddenly, and she will be sorely missed by many of us.

Tuesday, March 13th, was our scheduled Annual Founders Day Tournament. Even though the weather was not the best, the Tournament was held and was followed by a lovely lunch in the Club. First Flight Winners were: 1st Place - Theresa Mauterer, 2nd Place - Carol Cothie and 3rd Place - Sandy Merdinyan. Second Flight Winners included: 1st Place - Kathy Jones, 2nd Place Nancy Sislow, and 3rd Place - Carol Laux. And finally Third Flight Winners: 1st Place - Sylvia Corban, 2nd Place - Carol Wyrosdick and 3rd Place - Dolores Louvier.

The names of the 1st Place Winners will be put on the Founders Day Tournament Plaque which is kept at the club. During this competition awards were also given for Longest Drive. LD winner in the 1st Flight was Theresa Mauterer, in the 2nd Flight it was Pat VanDervort, and in the 3rd Flight it was Sylvia Corban. Closest-to-the-Pin awards went to: 1st Flight - Sue Richards, 2nd Flight Nancy Sislow, and 3rd Flight - Dolores Louvier. Mary Mizell also scored a Chip-In. Congratulations to all our gals! Great job!

Our next competition was “Odd Holes”. As its name implies, you only record your score on the the odd numbered holes and, of course, we always hope those are the ones where we get the lowest score. And the First Flight winners were: 1st Place - Theresa Mauterer, 2nd Place Kitty Gregoire, and 3rd Place Sue Richards. In the Second Flight the winners were: 1st Place - Fran Smith, 2nd Place - Charlene Smuck, and 3rd Place - Judi Brannan. Winners in the Third Flight were: 1st Place - Dolores Louvier, 2nd Place - Marsha Biestek, and 3rd Place - Jerry Ingraham. In addition Jerry Ingraham had a Birdie on hole #6, and Rene Dack got a Chip-In on hole #8. Glad to get in another fun round.

On the final Tuesday of March, the weather really cooperated and the winners of our monthly Scramble were: First Place Team including: Judi Brannan, Theresa Mauterer, Mary Mizell and Fran Smith. The Second Place Team was comprised of: Maggie Craig, Marilyn Galus, Kathy Jones and Dinah Knobloch. And Third Place Team was made up of: Marsha Biestek, Sylvia Corban, Cheryl Saak and Pat VanDervort.

It appears Spring is finally coming to Diamondhead, Mississippi. Thank goodness for that as we were really getting tired of the unusually cool and rainy weather.

GOLF, GROUNDS AND FACILITIES MAINTENANCE UPDATE

By Steven Smith Golf Course, Grounds & Facilites Maintenance Superintendent After a chilly April we at golf, grounds & facilities maintenance are looking forward to the month of May with some beautiful weather and the opening of our pools! Our crews have been hard at work on the golf courses, pools, parks, community center and club putting our spring annuals in and mulching flower beds.

The main pool deck project was completed last month along with updates to the landscaping around the pool and it looks great. If you haven’t had a chance to see it please come by and check it out. You can stay a while and enjoy the pool/splash pad. We also installed a fun new playground structure and a swing set at Holiday Village pool. This was a great addition and has been a wonderful project to take part in that has been very well received.

We will continue working for the next few weeks to put the finishing touches on the new court construction and walkway repairs at tennis world and are very excited about the opening of these new state of the art tennis courts. We’re off to a great start for 2018 and looking forward to a fun summer on the courses, courts, pools and parks.

OP/ED LETTERS TO EDITOR Dear Editor, I have read recent letters to the editor on the future of the POA with interest. Last month Mario Feola, a past POA President, and Jerry Moreau wrote about two different aspect of the issues facing us. Mr. Feola’s point seemed to be that if the POA is operated like a business, it should really be operated as such while Mr. Moreau blithely concluded that turning everything over to the City would solve all our problems.

Some of the points Mr. Feola notes are valid. However, he states that “the two major amenities, the golf courses and the club incur losses in a year in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. He also states, “In some cases the public may pay slightly more (or less) than members for golf but the club and most other amenities do not restrict public participation.” I spent six years on the POA Board, four as President, and I know of no circumstances where the public ever pays less than a Member to play golf.

Secondly, it is true that amenities are available to the public, as guests, on a space available basis. Members are given priority. Finally, as indicated by audited data being published by members of the Board of Directors, financial results have improved markedly over the past several years. While the food & beverage operations at the Club continue to lose money, although at a significantly reduced level, golf operations made money last year including capital. The improvement in the golf courses from the 5-year improvement plan, has led to an increase in membership and a significant increase in outside play.

Importantly, Mr. Feola ignores the “minor” (to him apparently) amenities which are amongst the most used

by Members – the swimming pools, playgrounds, walking tracks and ball fields. These are the amenities that most directly benefit families with children and there is no fee to use them. The cost of operating and maintaining these amenities is covered by Member dues. If the POA were to truly operate as a “profit and loss business” the first change to be made would likely be to close those amenities that don’t generate revenue. In short, our kids would perhaps be the biggest losers.

Mr. Moreau’s contention that giving the amenities to the City solves all of our problems is flawed for several reasons. First, the City is constrained from raising millage by more than 10% in any fiscal year. So, to generate the additional 40 mils he estimates to be required would take almost 10 years. The amenities could hardly survive such a long period of financial starvation in anything resembling a healthy manner. Secondly, look around the country. What percent of municipal swimming pools are closed? The answer is a huge percentage, perhaps 8590%. How many municipal golf courses are considered “good.” The answer is “very few” as witnessed by the Gulfport course near the airport. Cities are not good at operating amenities. The first thing any governmental entity cuts when it encounters financial difficulties, as

they all do, are recreation and cultural pursuits. Witness Hancock County’s recent cut to libraries as just one example.

Finally, Mr. Moreau postulates major savings from “a single administration and the elimination of duplication of services.” He notes a figure of $1,120,889 for “Administration Services” and says having the county tax assessor collect everything results in savings. He implies the entire amount would be saved. This is NOT TRUE. The largest component of the administrative expense by far is the cost of insurance on all the amenities. At the end of the day, there are only about 6 employees in POA Administration. Yes, some would go away, but by no means all.

Any savings would be relatively minimal. As for the claim

of “duplication of services” – there is little, if any.

Speaking from experience, I know the City and the POA worked diligently together to ensure there was no duplication of services or facilities.

Can the POA improve? Yes, and it should. But the answer is not for it to go away but find a way to survive in the new environment developing beginning in 2020. We live in an amazing community and are blessed to have the amenities we have. Let’s all work together to keep what we have and make it better.

Letters CONTINUED, FROM PAGE 26 Dear Editor, While reading the April edition of the DH News, I came to Mario Feola’s Letter to the Editor, and I felt like I was punched in the gut. The letter brings up the truth that Diamondhead’s common facilities “shall be for the exclusive use of property owners and their guests” while, in reality, they are “open to the public without restriction”. The gut punch really occurred where he reminded us that “the two major amenities, the golf courses and the club incur losses in a year in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

We. Are. Fools. It is about time that the Board decides whether or not these amenities are going to continue to suck the resources out of our community, or if they are

going to turn these amenities into true assets for us, and use them as revenue GENERATING possessions. The argument that these amenities attract new people to move into Diamondhead, and spend their money, loses quite a bit of steam when it comes at our foolish expense.

Resident dues are spent to make the pools, golf courses, and the club, into the finest around, and it’s now well past due that Diamondhead property owners start to see a return on their investments. There already is a gap between what members and what non-members pay for use of the golf courses and of the pools, but those gaps need to be widened ... now. At the Country Club, add 15% (for example) to the price of every single item served, including drinks, and offer a 15% discount to all that present their Diamondhead Country Club and Property Owners Association, Inc. Membership Card.

NOTA BENE MARINES CALLING FOR REINFORCEMENTS! Diamondhead Detachment 1454 of the Mississippi Division of the Marine Corps League (MCL) is calling for reinforcements. Finding itself under strength for its desired goal of providing aid and support to Marines and other veterans in need, it is asking for more Marines to join their ranks.

The Detachment honors Marine Corps history and tradition including celebrating the birthday of the Marine Corps and fostering camaraderie among Marines. Any Marine who served honorably for not less than ninety (90) days in the Marine Corps and persons who are serving or who have served honorably in the Marine Corps Reserve and have earned no less than ninety (90) Reserve Retirement Credit Points shall be eligible.

Navy Corpsman and Chaplains that have trained with Marine FMF units in excess of 90 days and earned the MC Device (claps) worn on the Serv-

ice Ribbon and those who earn the Warfare Device authorized for FMF Corpsmen shall also be eligible for regular membership.

The Diamondhead Marine Corps League Detachment meets every 2nd Tuesday of the month from 6:30 to 7:30 pm in the Card Room at the Diamondhead Country Club. Any Marine or Navy veterans who served with Marines are welcome to attend our meetings as guest and if desired, join the Detachment. The Detachment welcomes the opportunity to meet other Marines and Navy veterans who served with Marines. No need to call in advance, all they have to do is just show up for the meeting.

Now while I’m sure all of you are still celebrating the $60,000 of DPOA dues that was approved last month to repave the airport runway that each of us use every day, it’s time that each and every member of the DPOA starts to question all expenditures of your hard earned money.

It’s time that losses by our amenities are unacceptable, and with elections coming up, we find people who are dedicated to this cause, and who will truly spend our dues with care.
