FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK By Bob Marthouse I’m truly humbled by the POA election results and I’m grateful to everyone who voted. I’m also grateful for all candidates, board members, and volunteers who have, and are continuing to devote their time and effort to supporting and improving our community. I’m looking forward to all of us moving forward together in a united effort to make Diamondhead the best place to live on the Gulf Coast! To make that vision a reality, we’ve got a lot of work to do between now and 2020. I’m excited with the board team you’ve selected to do that work and move our community forward. We have an exceptionally talented group of officers and directors with the outstanding business experience and leadership abilities we need to tackle our most pressing issues. Together, we’re going to find a fair, affordable and sustainable, path to preserving our amenities and enhancing our quality of life. Among the things I committed to in our campaign was open, honest, and timely communications. I want you to know that in the first weeks of our transition, that’s been my top priority. I believe transparency is key if we’re going to be effective as a community in dealing with our chal-
lenges. We’re developing a communications policy that will keep all of us informed and help everyone understand how decisions are being made and how your dues are being spent. You’ll all be able to sit in on our board meetings and we’ll be looking for innovative ways for you to participate and provide the feedback we need. This week, we’re working on our committee structure to ensure we have an efficient and transparent process for managing and controlling
our POA operations. We’re just beginning the process and you can expect to hear more about that very soon. One of the new committees we’re developing is the Diamondhead 2020 committee. As most of you know, in 2020, the POA will lose architectural control and dues collection authority for a large portion of our properties. The expiration of the covenants for these properties will have a severe impact on our ability to maintain our properties and amenities. Without our cov-
enants, the POA will be unable to guarantee high property maintenance and appearance standards. We cannot allow 2020 to arrive without a solution to this problem. The Diamondhead 2020 committee will be charged with finding the best solutions and presenting them to the board. We’ll want everyone’s input and we’ll be looking for the best and brightest in our community to pitch in! I’m looking forward to working with and serving you all.

PUBLIC SERVICES EAST HANCOCK LIBRARY By Mary Gobert As summer stretches out before us, there are TONS of things happening at the library!! First, two things that have already happened: we have another successful Summer Reading Program in the bag. It’s really great that so many kids took advantage of it! Second, our LSD Book Club has expanded by a new member! Come see what it’s all about the second Wednesday of each month at 10:30. In July we will meet on the 11th. We’ll be looking for you! Now on to what’s coming in July to our branch here in Diamondhead! STRETCH your library days! Last month the library began Monday operation here in Diamondhead. Penny Crawford, the amazingly talented artist who painted the mural in the Children’s Room, is giving a class on how you can use greenery found at home with store bought flowers to make beautiful arrangements. This should be really good! STRETCH your grocery budget on Wednesday, July 11th at 2:00 p.m.! Jennifer O’Banner from the Extension Office will give us tips on how to stretch our dollars at
the supermarket. Her presentation is called “Shopping on a Budget”. Every little bit helps! Bring a friend and come see what’s new in this arena! STRETCH your pet care knowledge on Saturday, July 21st at 9:30 a.m. at East Hancock Library. That is when we will continue the Pet Care series with “Protecting Your Pet’s Future”. If you’ve attended any of the other presentations in this series, you know how informative they are! STRETCH your body on Tuesday, July 24th at 10:30 a.m.! Jennifer O’Banner is back on that day to present a class called “Strength and Flexibility”. Anyone looking for ways to increase these important physical assets with easy, gentle moves, this is for you! STRETCH your hurricane awareness on Thursday, July 26th at 10:00 a.m. ! Great info on hurricane preparation will be discussed. You can never be over prepared!! See you at the library!

The church has a diverse Music Ministry program. The Chancel Choir is enjoyed during the 10 a.m. service from September through May. Also participating in worship throughout the year are a Handbell Choir, a Praise Band, and the Living Springs Singers. Two Adult Christian Education classes are offered each Sunday from 9 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. In addition, during the 10 a.m. service, children in grades K-5th meet for Children’s Church. Nursery care is available from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. each Sunday for infants through Kindergarten. Little School, our preschool for children ages 3 & 4 is now taking early registrations for the Fall session, which begins on the Tuesday after Labor Day. School hours are 9 a.m. – Noon, Monday through Friday. The 3-year olds attend on Tuesday and Thursday and the 4-year olds attend Monday, Wednesday and Friday. S.P.C.A. OF DIAMONDHEAD, INC. On June 6, 2018, the following business was conducted at the general membership meeting: A new slate of officer and board members was selected. President-Thelma Hopkins, Vice President-Toni Grey, Secretary-Betty Maxwell, Treasurer-Marie Alongi. Board Members-Clare Hanson, Jacklyn Jay, Myra Derry, and Mary Ellen Turcotte. The members also voted to amend two by-laws. The first, our by-laws now states that any monies left after the SPCA of Diamondhead ceases to exist will be dispersed to one or more entities in Hancock County that provide care and treatment to small animals. Sweetie (see photo) was brought to us by the Diamondhead Police because she had been brought to them by a good Samaritan who found her alone on 603. The 6-8-week-old was covered with fleas and had two types of worms. Dr. Moore rid her of fleas and worms. Sweetie was offered for adoption on our Facebook page. While waiting she went for a walk with Thelma Hopkins and the police officer who brought her to us. While walking the trio was stopped by one of the men working for the tree company clearing the utility lines. When he found out she was up for adoption he decided he wanted to adopt her. Thelma did an intake interview and Sweetie went happily home to begin her new life. While Sweetie has a happy ending, Darling is still up for adoption. He is a very sweet male cat. Please
call us for any questions you may have about Sweetie. In the past month we spayed or neutered 8 dogs and 4 cats. While the animal control officer for Bay St Louis reports that Hancock County is seeing a decline in the number of racoons with distemper, our organization has received several calls from Diamondhead residents reporting “sick” raccoons in their area. The city of Diamondhead currently has no personnel to handle these calls. Please call Wild at Heart at 228-363-5977 with any inquiries. Please be aware that Wild at Heart is overwhelmed with request, so please be patient. Finally, please think about getting your pets microchipped. It is the best way to be reunited with our pet. Abby Guy leads 30 Our Lady Academy graduates Our Lady Academy’s Graduation mass was celebrated on Friday, May 25, 2018, at Our Lady of the Gulf Church in Bay St. Louis. There were thirty graduates in the Class of 2018, and Bishop Louis F. Kihneman, III was the principal celebrant. Abby Frances Guy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Guy from Diamondhead, was named Valedictorian of Our Lady Academy’s Class of 2018. Abby has achieved Principal’s Honor Roll throughout high school. While at Our Lady Academy, Abby was a member of Mu Alpha Theta, Spanish Honor Society (secretary), National Honor Society, Rotary Service Interact Club (public relations officer), Ambassador Program (vice president) and served as Senior Class Vice President. Abby has received recognition for achieving the highest average and excellence in Government and is the recipient of the Presidential Award for Outstanding Excellence. Abby served on the Hope Haven Child Advocacy Center’s Teen Board and traveled internationally as the Europe Ambassador for People to People. She was named National Scholar Society Leadership Ambassador, National American Miss Mississippi Junior Teen and selected to partake in the U.S. Senate Youth Program and the Summer Program on Developmental Psychology at Emory University. In 2016, Abby was awarded the Gold Level of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award and received the Certificate of Commendation from the

Puttin’ on the Ritz, Diamondhead-style By Sue W. Foster A most elegant ballroom greeted party goers for the Boaters annual Mardi Gras Ball, 2018. Every Hollywood song and dance man from Fred Astaire to Cary Grant to Clark Gable (yes, CLARK GABLE), who ever performed “Puttin’ on the Ritz” would have felt right at home at this exciting event! The stylish black and gold invitations designed by Carol Lilley broadly hinted at the sophistication and glitz to come for the event chaired by ball captain Jan Menker. The decorations in the ballroom carried forward the color scheme of the invitation with towering glass vases festooned in black, gold, white, and red in a neo-classical arrangement and table coverings of black, scattered with stars. The stage backdrop, created by Pam Marshall, was a stunning reproduction of the invitation with an added touch of red.
Vice Commodore of the Boaters Association, Chuck Ingraham, started the evening off by welcoming all members and guests to the ball and announced the Master of Ceremonies for the evening, Mark Miller. Royal guests from the three other Diamondhead Mardi Gras krewes were recognized: Krewe of Olympus King Hiram Skaggs and Queen Nancy Winters, Krewe of Selene Queen Roxanne and King Roger Worak, Krewe of Diamondhead King Kevin and Queen Sara Schulze. Guests of the king and queen were also recognized as were past royalty of the Krewe of Kamahameha in attendance. Serving as pages for the evening were the Queen’s granddaughter Gracie Saucier and the King’s grandson, Matthew Hendley. As noted by MC Miller, “Puttin’ on the Ritz” was written by Irving Berlin and derived from a slang expression of the era, inspired by the opulent Ritz Hotel in Manhat-
tan, “to put on the Ritz”—in other words to dress fashionably, parade, and party. The rich and famous gathered to party at the Ritz much as everyone in Diamondhead gathers at the Country Club. It couldn’t be said better than MC Miller: “Tonight, right here in Diamondhead…we, too, in all our glitz, are putting on the Ritz; gorgeous ladies in elegant gowns…accompanied by suave and debonair escorts, dressed like million-dollar troupers, trying to look like Gary Cooper.” The Royal Court of 2018 was introduced to much fanfare and entered the ballroom to their choices of music: Maid Judy Lakota and Duke Joe Lakota chose “One” the finale from “A Chorus Line”; Maid Cheryle Doyle and Duke Joe Doyle entered the ballroom to Gene Kelly and “Singing in the Rain”; Maid Peggy Cooper and Duke

Ritz CONTINUED, FROM PAGE 12 Wayne Cooper made their entrance to Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York”; and Lady-in-Waiting Barbara Miller and Equerry Val Miller were announced by “Razzle Dazzle” by Cheri. After Court members took their places on the stage, trumpet blasts announced King Akua Kai XLIII Richard Brown and his Queen Bobbie Yaniga Brown who made their entrance into the ballroom to thunderous applause and the traditional, “If Ever I Cease to Love”. They made their royal promenade around the room and the dance floor and took their places in the spotlight on the state. Salutations and the waving of scepters preceded the King reading his royal proclamation and the royal toasts that were made by Jim Brownell, King Akua Kai 42nd and the reigning King Richard. Following the toasts, the King and Queen proceeded to the dance floor for the first dance - none other than “Puttin’ on the Ritz”- joined by the Court and past royalty in attendance. Much to the delight of the crowd, Fan Favorites Pam Marshall, Audrey Ramirez and Marcia Frisina, in their tinseled wigs and sequined bell bottoms,

entertained the crowd and royalty with their glittery pantomime of the ABBA hit, “Dancing Queen.” After a delicious dinner, Ball Chair Jan Menker was recognized and thanked all who helped her make the event such a great success. No Mardi Gras ball is complete without the fun and frivolity of the traditional Second Line, led by King Richard and Queen Bobbie with her umbrella made by Sandy Hatem and their Court. The beloved Queen Bobbie was radiant and glamorous in a ball gown of shimmering gold and her maids were a perfect complement, attired in black sequined gowns, carrying long-stemmed red roses. Congratulations to the Chef and Staff of the Diamondhead Country Club for a job well done and an evening enjoyed by all. Revelers partied to the music of Cool Rayz until late in the evening and left the venue looking forward to the next Mardi Gras season!

DIAMONDHEAD VFW POST 2880 SELECTED FOR ALL-STATE HONORS VFW Post 2880 commanded by Jerry Peppenger, took home award after award at the Mississippi State VFW Convention on June 9-10. This is the second time in four years the post was awarded All-State Honors. Commander Peppenger stated it was through the outstanding efforts of the post membership that made it possible for such a great year. The post hosted the Viet Nam Combat Veteran Memorial Wall display in September of last year and collected several thousand dollars from the Buddy Poppy program on Memorial Day and Veterans Day that goes a long way in assisting homeless veterans on the Gulf Coast. The post also hosts the Memorial Day dedication to honor the Diamondhead veterans who have passed each year in front of the Diamondhead Country Club. Another key factor is the post increased their membership by 7%. All things considered, it was a banner year and the post is looking forward again to exceling in their efforts. The competition takes place August 12 – 18 (team event) and August 19– 25 (individuals). Approximately 24 other countries will be competing in this prestigious event. In the 2017 World Championships Steve’s team finished in 6th place out of 22
teams. Individually, Steve made it to the Round of 32 & lost to the #1 player from Australia. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) is the governing body of world tennis, wheelchair tennis and beach tennis. It was founded in 1913 as the International Lawn Tennis Federation by twelve national associations, and as of 2016, is affiliated with 211 national tennis associ-
ations and six regional associations. The ITF organizes annual team competitions for men (Davis Cup), women (Fed Cup) and mixed teams (Hopman Cup), as well as tennis and wheelchair tennis events at the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games on behalf of the International Olympic Committee. The ITF sanctions the Grand Slam tennis tournaments.

SPORTS DIAMONDHEAD GOLF Chris Altese, PGA Director of Golf Golf continues to heat up in Diamondhead! Our golf courses are in beautiful condition and have been busy as the weather allowed for the first half of this year. We appreciate the support and cooperation of our annual golf members and property owners.
Once again the Hawaiian Invitational was a huge success. Held the first weekend in June, the field consisted of 48 couples from all across the southern region. Many compliments on the food, golf course, staff, and just Diamondhead in general. New friends and memories were made. Congratulations to our champions, Cully & Tracie Tolbert! The Tolbert’s have won the
event for the past 3 consecutive years and five times overall. Special thanks to our tournament committee, John and Sandy Price, and the many volunteers that help make this an enjoyable outing for all of our couples. The U.S. Kids Golf World Championship and the U.S. Kids Teen World Championship are the largest and most prestigious events in the world of their kind. Both three-day tournaments, held in the setting of tall southern pines, attracts nearly 2,000 participants from across the United States and more than 30 countries abroad. To receive an invitation, junior golfers must complete the season as a top player in their age category and shoot the minimum score twice during the season as required by the US Kids Golf World Championship committee. Congratulations to each of them and have fun in Pinehurst!
Having five juniors or more qualify for the World Championships from one club 3 years in a row is a phenomenal accomplishment. Congratulations to Gene Sullivan and Glenn Brooks for making Hole-in-Ones on Par 3’s. Mike Cavataio has won the Closest-to-the Pin competition 8 times, while Gene Demedicis and Ton O’Connell have won 7 times each. In the ABCD 2 Best Balls format the team of Warren Alexander, Berni Breen, Pat Laird, and Bill Roofner led the scoring with a team score of -30 followed closely by Tom O’Connell, Charlie Pomes, Fred Richoux and Bill Vandervort with -29. The third place team composed of Mike Cavataio, Ernie Knoblooch, Dave Gibbons, and Robert S. Smith shot a -26. Our first week of each month is Trophy Day, and we actually were able to play this game. And, the winners were: FLIGHT #1 - Low Gross, Linda DeParto; Low Net, Ann Nutting; and Low Putts, Kathie Pierson. FLIGHT #2 - Low Gross, Jerry Ingraham: Low Net, Beryl Laird; and Low Putts, Sylvia Corban. FLIGHT #3 - Low Gross, Mary Murray; Low Net, Marsha Biestek; and Low Putts, Ruthie O’Neill. Good job gals! The following week we again managed to play, and this time the game was “Winners Minus Two”. This format allows you to blindly choose two holes before you play the round, and those two holes are then deducted from your score. NOTA BENE WHAT IS MARINE CORPS FELLOWSHIP? My wife and I were recently having lunch with a Marine friend and his wife when I noticed a thin, frail, and disheveled man enter the restaurant wearing a Vietnam veteran cap with many ribbons. He looked quite elderly but being a Vietnam veteran I knew he was not as old as he looked. As we ate I kept watching him as he seemed lost in his own thoughts as if carrying a heavy burden. The younger couple with him, presumably relatives, carried on their own conversation occasionally
trying unsuccessfully to engage him in it. He had the “1000-yard stare” I had seen so often in PTSD patients during my career as a VA psychologist. I finally told my friend “let's thank him for his service.” Approaching him, I leaned forward and softly asked “Do you mind if we thank you for your service” (some do!)? “Not at all,” he replied. We thanked him for his service and then I asked him what branch he served in. Tilting his head back and in a surprisingly loud, clear voice he proudly replied “I was in the Marines!” Reflexively, my friend and I each shook one of

During this competition Kathie Pierson had a Birdie on #7 and both Pat VanDervort (#7) and Ruthie O’Neill (#3) scored Chip-ins. Every May we play our two-day Aloha Tournament. During this event we play nine holes on Monday and the second nine holes of the same course on the following day. At the luncheon following the end of play, awards are given for each flight and an overall Champion is determined. This year our Aloha Champion was Sylvia Corban. Her name will be added to the Aloha Trophy kept in the Club House. Flight #1 - 1st Place was Ann Nutting, 2nd Place was Susan Fontenot and 3rd Place was Marilyn Galus. In the 2nd Flight - Kathie Pierson took first place, Nancy Sislow took second place, and Judi Brannon came in 3rd. For Flight #3 the 1st Place winner was Carol Wyrosdick, 2nd Place was taken by Mary Murray, and 3rd Place was awarded to Mary Mizell. Closest to the Pin awards went to: 1st Flight - Linda DeParto, 2nd Flight - Kathie Pierson, and 3rd Flight Sylvia Corban. Longest Drive awards were taken by 1st Flight - Linda DeParto, 2nd Flight - Judi Brannan, and 3rd Flight - Mary Mizell. And, yet again, Ruthie O’Neill
his hands and simultaneously said “Semper Fi.” As he quickly replied “Semper Fi” a jolt of electricity surged through the three of us. The indestructible bond between Marines took over and we were connected. No longer strangers, we were MARINES as he excitedly went on to describe the units he served with in Vietnam. We were enjoying the warmth of Marine Corps fellowship and it felt good. As we left, I looked at the Vietnam veteran and saw his eyes were following us out. It was a different person, I was now seeing a Marine sitting upright in his chair basking in re-
newed self-respect and the fellowship of having connected with other Marines. had a Chip in on #15. Looks like this is becoming a theme for Ruthie. We also awarded a Longest Drive to Darlene Park who played from the Black tees. Several of our gals are beginning to take advantage of playing from the official Black Tees which shorten the playing length of the course but also reduce your handicap figure. When enough of our gals start playing from this tee slot on a regular basis, we will form a special Flight for that group. However. these players will have to return to the Red Tees when we play a Scramble or other team event. Tuesday, May 22, didn’t turn out as well since the weather was iffy to say the least. Several gals turned out to play a Scramble. Unfortunately, before they could complete the game the horn blew indicating lightning in the area. So much for that game! Seems Mother Nature is still calling the shots. On the final Tuesday of May, we played a Scramble. The winners were: First Place Team: Beryl Laird, Theresa Mauterer, Bonnie Rolfs and Fran Smith. Second Place Team (determined in a scorecard playoff): Sylvia Corban, Renie Dack, Shirley Halterman and Margaret Sherwood. Third Place Team (playing with a Ghost player to complete the 4 member team) : Mary Mizell, Ann Nutting and Shelley Palmature. Theresa Mauterer scored a Birdie on #11 which most certainly helped her team win. Well done gals!

Rupert Murdoch Kern won 1st Place in largest breed category at the recent Lion’s Club Dog Show. His proud owner is L’Ann Kern. Rupert Murdoch Kern is seven years old and was found in the woods around Hattiesburg when he was four weeks old. He was given to L’Ann by a rescue center for dogs when he was only eight weeks old.
