THE PRESIDENT’S DESK Dear fellow POA Members, The past few months have been busy for the Diamondhead Property Owners Association (POA), and we’d like to take this opportunity to share some of the more significant initiatives with you. Our new POA General Manager, Tom Koger, along with our Diamondhead 2020 Committee, is in place and already effecting positive change. Many of the systems that we have had in place almost since our inception are outdated. Tapping Tom’s expertise, we are working to improve technology to streamline our processes and make everything more efficient for our property owners, including updates to accommodate electronic payments for dues. Your membership entitles you to better prices, and our new system will allow us to differentiate between members and non-members for goods and services at the club. The board and the administration have been working with the Diamondhead 2020 Committee to identify a procedure that allows us to modernize our covenants and continue providing amenities that make Diamondhead a desired community. To provide our members with the best path towards having their voices heard, the board voted unanimously to move

KEEP DIAMONDHEAD BEAUTIFUL Keep Diamondhead Beautiful is thrilled to announce that we are the recipients of two $10,000 grants through Keep America Beautiful. The first $10,000 is a Community Partner Grant that assist communities that have been severely impacted by severe storms and hurricanes. This project is two-fold and will help us to landscape and beautify around the newly mitigated lift stations that had to be raised above the flood elevation levels and to also enhance the land-
scaping at the new kayak launches. You will see us beginning this project immediately. Our initial plan is to plant large trees/ shrubs along the roadway in front of the main lift station on DHN to screen it from view. The second $10,000 grant was awarded through Keep America Beautiful’s Community Restoration and Resiliency Fund to Affiliates that serve communities directly affected by natural and environmental disasters. The fund provides immediate and long-term support for initial and ongoing cleanup efforts and helps rebuild vital public spaces: parks, greenways, community gateways, Main Street/ downtown areas, open spaces and more. This money will be used to cleanup and enhance the work begun several years ago at our ‘Duck

Public Services CONTINUED, FROM PAGE 8 Pond’. The plan that was put in place to help protect the Rotten Bayou watershed was good, but unfortunately there was no funding for upkeep and it has become mostly an eye-sore at this point. We will look at ways to keep the original intent of filtering the water leaving the pond before entering our bayou, but in a much easier to maintain manner. In addition to the two grants, Keep Diamondhead Beautiful is also very happy to announce that we were one of the few affiliates of Keep Mississippi Beautiful selected to receive a new 6’x12’ trailer. We also recently
received a donation of two dozen litter grabbers from ArcMate, an In-Kind Sponsor to Keep America Beautiful which we donated to the city’s Public Works Department at a recent City Council meeting. The ultimate goal of KDB is to help beautify the city and encourage our friends and neighbors to do the same. We believe that fostering a greater sense of community and involving everyone is the key to keeping our city clean, therefore having an even more beautiful Diamondhead. Keep Diamondhead Beautiful and The Mississippi Forestry Commis-
sion are asking for your assistance. “Chinese tallow (popcorn) trees are non-native invasive species that grow and spread incredibly fast; they have the potential to overgrow entire forests, altering light availability for native species and changing the native ecosystem. Prevention is an important control tactic for popcorn trees. Landowners are encouraged to remove fully grown trees and seedlings from their property. If possible, seedlings should be removed before they reach maturity. In the absence of proper land management practices, popcorn trees will outcompete (kill) native plant species. Transforming native habitats into mono-
specific (single species) forests that consist only of popcorn trees,” said Todd Matthews, Urban Forestry and Forest Health Coordinator. “Fallen leaves also contain toxins that create unfavorable soil conditions and alter light availability for native plant species. Popcorn trees are known to have toxic properties.” Popcorn trees spread like wildfire, overtaking native vegetation, damaging wildlife habitats, and destroying nature’s balance. They have distinct heart-shaped leaves, dangling yellow flowers, and fruit that appears similar to popcorn. Popcorn trees are deceptive, they look attractive and ornamental - but are actually highly invasive and will quickly
damage the native ecosystem wherever they are planted. Please remove any and all popcorn trees on your
property and report any others to the link below. Report popcorn tree sightings to: www.HelpStopThePop.com.

The Diamond Krewe of Olympus announces royalty It was the night of September 29 in the Emerald ballroom, and anticipation ran high in the Krewe of Olympus. Who will it be? Who’s our royalty for this year? Opinions were exchanged, everyone was sure they knew…Talk about keeping a secret! Olympus Krewe President Betty Maxwell and Royalty Chair Josette Grace had made the decision and they were NOT Talking! The moment finally arrived, heralded by three trumpet blasts and the song “If Ever I Should Cease to Love”’ provided by music maestro Doug Maxwell. It is the music used by all the Krewes to alert us that our royalty is here! The new king, Kurt Braun, marched in with his queen, Jeanne Hawkins, on his arm. Apollo David Motz and Aphrodite Candy Motz followed, all smiling ear to ear. Great choices! Speaking of great choices-the dinner was exceptional, thanks to Josette, who met with Chef Eli and chose our menu. We started with a Capri salad, followed by an exquisitely prepared Chateau Briand, The Olympus Royal Court: Aphrodite Candy Motz, Queen Jeanne Hawkings, King Kurt Braun and Apollo David Motiz. wild rice pilaf, summer vegetable medley, and the dessert!! DIAMONDHEAD GARDEN CLUB Hummers and Monarch butterflies have been on our coast for the past several months. Early morning bird songs are floating thru the air for us to hear. In past years Diamondhead was designated as a bird sanctuary under POA leadership. Being that Diamondhead as well as Mississippi are part of the spring and fall migratory bird path, Diamondhead Garden Club would like our community to have the bird sanctu-
ary designation in future years; the Club is working on a resolution to promote this designation to Diamondhead City Council. Garden Club members placed blue bird houses on the golf courses and a Purple Martin house near Twin Lakes; we also plant bird, bee, and butterfly plants in our home gardens and other places. At our November meeting MS Extension Agent Christian Stephenson will share with us information about plants and flowers that will attract many birds, bees, and butterflies. Our November meeting will be on Wed. Nov. 14 at Diamondhead Country Club; at 9:30 am there’s Meet & Greet With the Garden Club meeting beginning at 10 am. For more Garden Club info, contact President Charlotte Crowe at 255-0870.

DIAMONDHEAD WOMEN’S CLUB The October meeting of our club was very well attended, and we added nine new members! Guests from the Hancock Food Pantry, Pride with a Purpose, and Pink Heart
Funds were presented checks by Cassandra Godbold and Sara Schulze from our fundraising efforts last year! Our club raised over $20,000 from these events, and our three charities were so pleased with our donations! We really enjoyed a Chico’s fashion show, featuring our very own members as models! They brought along some wonderful items for purchase after the show. Please come join us on
Wednesday, November 7th, and bring a friend, all women are welcome! We will discuss the charities to support this year. The Diamondhead Women’s Club contributes to our community by supporting one or more charitable, humanitarian, or social welfare projects every year. Dara Skinner, our guest speaker, will give a presentation about estate planning and making wills. Our dues are only $15 per year, and we always meet on the first Wednesday of the month. Please come join us on Wednesday, November 7th at 11:00 at the Country Club for our meeting and lunch, hope to see you there!

It's your golf course so let’s all take care of it! We look forward to seeing you "PLAY MORE GOLF.” Let's all get out and enjoy our beautiful golf courses and practice facil-
ities. As always, let us know how we can help. Please don’t pull off of the cart paths around tee and green complexes. Keep all four tires on the cart path. This will help us keep quality turf around these areas that would otherwise get compacted and show signs of extreme wear due to high traffic. Our cart paths are wide enough to allow for golf carts to keep all four tires on the path around tees and greens. Golf carts needing to pass should have ample room to do so or they can pass to the outside of the tee and green complexes while going around you. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
DMGA By Ernie Knobloch
In the ABCD 2 BEST BALLS formats played last month, the team of Ray Badgett, Al Corban, Paul Painter and Tom Woolbright recorded an outstanding score of -30, followed by Dave Gibbons, Gene Demedicis, Roger Marquez, Jim Sherrouse and Lee Bell, John Benus, Renny Pangan and J.C. Price, both of which recorded team scores of – 26. That’s excellent scoring in this format. In the POINTS format where a plus score is better, the teams of Dave Gibbons, Frank Morrow, Tom O’Connell and Renny Pangan recorded +11, the same as Warren Alexander, Paul Cain, Mike Cavataio, and Warren Morgan.
On the Saturday play date where a SHAMBLE was played, Larry McKay made a Hole-in-One on #7 of the Cardinal. The shot was so well hit that it entered the cup on the fly and stayed in the cup. Wow!!! Congratulations to Larry McKay. During that event, the team of Roger Marquez, Don Perkins, James Sewell and Jim Sherrouse led the scoring with -44, the best total score I can remember in this format. The team of AJ Dilly, Ernie Knobloch, Larry McKay and Frank Morrow came in second with -37. In the PEERS format, Berni Breen, Glenn Conover, Tom O’Connell and a Ghost led the scoring with a team score of +8 followed by Warren Alexander, John Benus, Renny Pangan and a Ghost with +5. It seems as if the Ghost must have played well. The best individual scores posted last month were all +5, recorded by Dave Gibbons, Tom O’Connell, Warren Alexander, John Benus and Ernie Knobloch. Only Warren Alexander and Warren Morgan won Closest to the Pin more than once with both players winning twice. In 2018, 62 individual players have won Closest to the Pin at least once. Mike Cavataio has 14 wins while Tom O’Connell is in second place with 11 wins. Mike had a “bad” last month as he only won one time. As of the deadline for this article, 15 players have
over $100 in winnings with an additional 10 players winning between $80 $99. With some cooler weather in the forecast the number of players each week will increase and additional players should reach the $100 in winnings mark. Two proposed rule changes for golfer 70+ year olds are: Rule #1 — If a tree is between the ball and the hole, and the tree is deemed to be younger than the player, then the ball can be moved without penalty. This is so because this is simply a question of timing; when the player was younger, the tree was not there so the player is being penalized because of his age. Rule #2 — A ball sliced or hooked into the Rough shall be lifted and placed on the Fairway at a point equal to the distance it carried or rolled into the Rough with no penalty. The senior player should not be penalized for tall grass which ground keepers failed to mow.
DWGA NEWS This may seem very redundant but the weather is just no cooperating with the 18 hole ladies. We just pack it up and wait for the next week. Anyway, it’s been awfully hot this year. On September 13 it was Trophy Day. The overall gross winner was Georgeann Luxion. 1st Flight winners were 1st-

DWGAN GOLFING NEWS FROM SEPTEMBER 2018
CONTINUED, FROM PAGE 23
By Shirley Halterman
Dianne Ackerman, 2nd-Rita Durham, and 3rd-Becky Stritzel. The 2nd Flight winners were: 1st-Joanne Fried, 2nd-Marian Wideman, and 3rd-Colleen Jones. The 3rd Flight winners were 1st Patty Hourin and a tie for 2nd with Margaret Papaleo and Jo Webre. Birdies for this date included those from Dianne Ackerman and Marion Wideman. Closet to the Pin winners were #4-Joanne Fried, #7Dianne Ackerman, and #13-Ok Sang Hall. Chip-Ins included Dianne Ackerman, Lottie Williams, and Marian Wideman. There was a lot of action that day. Dianne Ackerman was wanting to be sure of her “status.” Way to go!! On September 20 there was no game. You guessed it. RAIN!! On September 27 the DWGA group got started but again, the rain was out to rue the day. Since there were a few holes completed and there was some activity due to mention, Joanne Fried had a CTP on ole #4 and Carol Kirschenbaum had a CTP on #7. At least they had some bragging rights. This next item represents some more good stuff from the DWGA. Four of our ladies chose to enter the Mississippi State Women’s Senior Champion held in Meridian, Mississippi. These ladies were Betty Bowen, Cassandra Godbold, Amy Swint, and Debbie Wolf. They persevered through the usual rain and usual bad weath-
er we have down this way to have it follow them up there. They were used to it. Long story short, they came in 2nd Place in the First Flight!! Way to go!! Some of our DWGA ladies got to represent again. There was a friendly “Soulheim Cup” starting play at The Oaks against the DWGA and the Oaks ladies on Tuesday, 9/17/18. There were 14 players from our DWGA. The list of players were Captain Janice Preble with players Pat Ellis, Cassandra Godbold, Rita Durham, Amy Swint, Georgeanne Luxion, Vicki Stein, Cathy Weber, Terri Woolbright, Betty Bowen, Beverly Cox, Judy Amox, Patti Hourin, and Terri Garrett. As in the other “Soulheim Cup” there were different matches and formats set up. After the first day the Oaks and Dhead were tied 3.5 and 3.5. The next day the tourney moved to the Diamondhead course. It was a tough round of playing, but wouldn’t you just know it, the DHEAD ladies WON 6.5 – 0.5. Over all the total was Dhead 10 and The Oaks 4. Diamondhead gets to keep the trophy for the second year. Congratulation to some great playing ladies and hopefully next year will be #3. With the fall upon us maybe we can all get out to play more golf and have more fun with our ladies. No rain, no heat, and no injuries; just the usual aches and pains. Play as best you can!!
Someone recently noticed that it is officially Fall. But, you would be hard pressed to prove that here in Diamondhead, MS where temperatures continue to remain in the 90s, and the only real difference is we have had a lot more rain. The first Tuesday of each month is our “Trophy” play day. Unfortunately, this month’s Trophy Day had to be canceled due to both hot and soggy conditions as well as the potential threat of Hurricane Gordon which thankfully missed us. Monday, September 10th, and Tuesday, September 11th, were originally scheduled to be our two-day Club Championship. After much consideration, we regretfully decided to postpone this Championship Tournament. We will try to reschedule this event later in this year when weather conditions improve. Beat-the-Pro was the game for September 18th. One of our Club Pro Golfers goes out to play nine holes. Our members must then, play the same 9 holes and post a better score than our Pro. Our advantage is that we can apply our handicap to our scores while the pro cannot. This year the pro to beat was Chris Altese who shot a 38. Thirteen of our gals braved the heat to try to best him. While several of our gals came very close to meeting this challenge, no one actually beat Chris’
score, however, Susie Fontenot did manage, using her handicap, to tie him. It was decided to give her a “I beat the pro” pin for her valiant effort. Guess we will have to all work on our game and do better at this competition next year. Tuesday, September 25, was the date scheduled for us to play our Annual Scramble with our 18 hole counterparts. This is always a fun time, and we enjoy an excuse to play with these gals. Weekend weather made our course a bit wet requiring the gals to play “cart path only.” When playing a Scramble,
this can become a bit of a challenge since choosing the best ball to play can require a greater amount of walking than in a normal round. 26 gals turned out for this event. And the winners were: First Place Team with a score of 35 consisted of Colleen Jones, Theresa Mauterer, Margaret Sherwood and Nancy Sislow. Coming in Second with a score of 37 were Sylvia Corban, Susie Fonenot, Oksang Hall and Jerry ngraham. And in Third Place, playing with a Ghost Player, and posting a score of 39 was the team of Beryl
Laird, Pat VanDervort and Mariam Wideman. We would be remiss if we did not note that Margaret Sherwood scored a Chip-In on hole #11. Congratulations to all who joined us for this competition. We continue to pray for dryer and cooler weather as the Autumn months approach, and we are so very thankful that, while a bit rainy, thus far hurricane weather has avoided our shores. Meanwhile keep swinging and working toward that lower handicap.

I had two major surgeries a couple of weeks ago and am a senior resident of Diamondhead. Living in a highly forested area I have a lot of racoons around. I live alone and have no family. A young cub came on to my patio and died. Its 94 degrees out. I called all 6 wildlife numbers, to no avail. I called the POA, no help there. Day two. The stench by now is terrible. I finally out of desperation called our Fire department. Jerry answered and listened to my tale of woe. Knowing
just how awful a job like this would be, he offered to come by when he finished work and take care of it for me. He did just that. I was bedridden and didn’t even get to meet him or say thank you. This fireman named Jerry is my hero. I will forever pay it forward. Thank you, Jerry. Sincerely, grateful Diamondhead resident
