Congratulations to Diamondhead junior golfer Chase Urban on placing 3rd in the Putting Category at the 2019 Drive Chip and Putt Championship Local Qualifier at Diamondhead Country Club. This was Chase’s first attempt at qualifying and he has been playing golf less than a year. That’s pretty incredible! Way to go, Chase!

Congratulations to Diamondhead junior golfers Nicolas Boisdore and Gabe Hudson on medaling in the Gulf Coast Junior Tour event at Shell Landing Golf Club. Way to go, Nicolas and Gabe!

Congratulations to Diamondhead junior golfer Jack Lawson on his stellar performance at the 2019 Drive Chip and Putt Championship Local Qualifier at Diamondhead Country Club. Jack not only advances to the Subregional Championship but he did so by outscoring all other 146 participants in all other age groups.

We’re well into summer, and Diamondhead proves to be a vibrant community that offers great pools, tennis, golf, dining, picnic, boating, and aviation activities at very reasonable rates. I trust you’re taking advantage of those facilities and activities that interest you and your family.

Your recently elected POA Board has been busy!

The officers and directors are working through an orientation period and learning about all facets of POA Operations. Each department head has presented their portfolio to the board. Collectively, we are looking at every business line for any existing inefficiencies and will make appropriate corrections. We are also in the process of interviewing General Manager candidates and we will be introducing you to our new GM soon. Your Board has hit the ground running!

As you may or may not know, our most pressing issue is the expiration of POA Covenants that begin in the year 2020 in Phase I of Diamondhead. I have directed the establishment of a committee whose chair and members are POA members in good standing. Their charge is to provide the POA Board with a variety of courses of action, from which the Board can choose the one

PUBLIC SERVICES KEEP DIAMONDHEAD BEAUTIFUL

The long, hot and now very wet summer that we have been having has kept us less visible, but we continue to work on beautification projects.

Each year, Keep Mississippi Beautiful has an exhibit at the Mississippi Municipal League conference where they meet the state’s elected Mayors and Aldermen. Keep Diamondhead Beautiful recently joined KMB at the MML meeting at the Coliseum where we had the opportunity to work with the Mayors’ Youth Councils for a service project.

We assisted the students in building 6 benches and potting 6 planters that were distributed to local affiliates.

We were very fortunate to

receive two of the benches and some of the planters. They are proudly displayed at both entrances to City Hall.

We were also very proud and excited to receive the news that KDB is the recipient of another $10,000 grant. This year’s grant is a “2018 Community Partner Grant” provided through Keep America Beautiful. Each year affiliates throughout the US submit projects for consideration and grants are awarded.

The objective of our project is to “replenish trees and improve the water quality, reduce flood risk and recharge the groundwater supplies by capturing and filtering storm water.”

We are very happy to be partnered with both the City and the POA in working to KEEP DIAMONDHEAD BEAUTIFUL.

HANCOCK LIBRARY The Adult Summer Reading Program will be all about The Great American Read featured on PBS. Our program will begin Monday, August 6 at 5:30 at BSL with a discussion of the 100 books that are featured as America’s favorites. (If you need any other GAR info, go to pbs.org for lots more).

The program will run through September.

Also, in August and September, we will show 2 movies each month: on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays.

These will be book-to-movie adaptations selected from those on the PBS list.

MINUTES Minutes of the regular meeting of the Board of Directors Diamondhead Country Club and Proper-

ty Owners Association, Inc. May 14, 2018 A Regular Meeting of the Board was held at the Diamondhead Country Club, 7610 Country Club Circle, Diamondhead, Mississippi. President P. Laird chaired the meeting and called it to order at 6:00pm.

Present were: President Laird, Vice President Finley, Treasurer Allen, Secretary Sislow, Director Ertel, Director Harvey, Director Nolan, Director Silcio and Ex-Officio Fletcher. Absent was: Director Montjoy and Director Tullier. Also present were D. McInnis, Controller and Attorney Tubertini.

Minutes – The minutes from the meetings of April 16 & May 1, 2018 were approved.

Opening Remarks –President Laird had no opening remarks.

Financial Report –Controller McInnis reported on April and year-to-date financials.

Country Club and Property Management Report – No report was given, as Property Manager McNally was called away.

Golf, Grounds, and Facilities Report – No report was given, as Superintendent Smith was called away.

Old Business: None New Business: 1. Rename Diamond-

head Tennis World – A motion was made by Vice President Finley and seconded by Director Nolan to rename Diamondhead Tennis World (aka Tennis World at Diamondhead); and to complete all actions to assure the proper notice of the new name. Yea: Allen, Finley, Nolan, Silcio; Nay: Laird; Sislow, Ertel, Harvey, Fletcher; Abstain: None. The motion failed.

2. Restaurant Building on Yacht Club Circle – A motion was made by Director Harvey and seconded by Director Nolan to accept the $26,300 bid by Assured Comfort for replacement of air conditioning system at the restaurant building on Yacht Club Circle. Yea: Laird, Allen, Finley, Sislow, Ertel, Harvey, Nolan, Silcio; Nay: none; Abstain: Fletcher.

The motion passed.

3. Restaurant Building on Yacht Club Circle - A motion was made by Director Harvey and seconded by Vice President Finley to approve the rent increase to $5,000 per month through March 31, 2023 for the restaurant building on Yacht Club Circle. Yea: Laird, Allen, Finley, Sislow, Ertel, Harvey, Nolan, Silcio, Fletcher; Nay: none; Abstain: None. The motion passed.

4. East Rec Parking - A motion was made by Director Silcio and seconded

by Director Harvey to allocate $40,000 earmarked for paving in the 2018 Capital Budget to be used for East Rec paving with contractor selection

based on POA bid policy and Board approval.

The motion was amended by Director Silcio and seconded by Director Harvey to allocate $44,000 for East Rec parking. Yea: Laird, Finley, Sislow, Ertel, Harvey, Nolan, Silcio; Nay: Fletcher; Abstain: Allen.

The motion passed.

5. 2018 Election: Appointment of Alexander Van Loon Sloan Levens & Favre, PLLC - A motion was made by Director Harvey and seconded by Vice President Finley to spread across the minutes the Secretary’s appointment of the accounting firm of Alexander Van Loon Sloan Levens & Favre, PLLC to receive the Member Verification Forms/Absentee Ballots and proxies and tally all votes. Yea: Laird, Finley, Allen, Sislow, Ertel, Harvey, Nolan, Silcio; Nay: None; Abstain: Fletcher.

The motion passed Member’s Questions 1. Covenant Status – Member Ertel’s questions regarding the status of the covenants litigation was addressed by Attorney Tubertini.

Executive Session – A motion to adjourn to Executive Session to address privileged legal and personnel matters was made

by Director Harvey and seconded by Vice President Finley. The motion passed unanimously. The Board entered Executive Session at 6:45PM and returned to regular session at 7:11PM. Next meeting – The next

meeting of the Board of Directors will be the Annual Member Meeting to be held June 16, 2018 at 9:00AM at the Diamondhead Community Center.

Adjournment – A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Director Nolan and seconded by Vice-President Finley. The motion passed unanimously. The meeting adjourned at 7:12PM. COMMUNITY DIAMONDHEAD COMMUNITY CHURCH 5301 Diamondhead Circle 228-255-5556, dhcommunitychurch.org Worship Services: Services are held Sundays at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Holy Communion is served on the first Sunday of every month. The church has a diverse Music Ministry program. The Chancel Choir is enjoyed during the 10 a.m. service from September through May. Also participating in worship throughout the year are a Handbell Choir, a Praise Band, and the Living Springs Singers.

Our Wednesday Night Youth Program runs weekly from 5:15 p.m. - 6:45 p.m.

The program is for Youth in Grades K thru 12. Youth are divided into groups according to school grades. Meals are provided at no cost. Our Youth Night Program resumes on Wednesday, August 22. Registrations will be taken that night.

Two Adult Christian Education classes are offered each Sunday from 9 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. In addition, during the 10 a.m. service, children in grades K-5th meet for Children’s Church. Nursery care is available from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. each Sunday for infants through Kindergarten.

Little School, our preschool for children ages 3 & 4 is taking registrations for the Fall session, which begins on the Tuesday after Labor Day. School hours are 9 a.m. – Noon, Monday through Friday. The 3-year olds attend on Tuesday and Thursday and the 4-year olds attend Monday, Wednesday and Friday. HCAS, addressed our organization at our Board of Director meeting.

Mr. Wyman had worked at the shelter from 2012-2014, so he was very familiar with the shelter before becoming the director. He and his staff have spent the past few months cleaning, painting, and “brightening up” the building. Since they are committed to being a no kill shelter, they send monthly transports of cats and dogs up North.

The northern states have such strict animal control ordinances that their shelters are in need of dogs and cats to adopt.

By requiring owners to spay, neuter and register their pets they have been able to greatly decrease the number of lots and abandoned pets.

With the extreme heat we’ve been experiencing lately the shelter has been in need of large floor fans to help keep the animals cool. The SPCA of Diamondhead donated three fans to the shelter to help the animals.

If you have not already done so, please visit “Hancock County Animals Shelter, MS” on Facebook. The posts are very informative. You can see many of the cats and dogs that are up for adoption, suggestions about what animal lovers in the community can do to help, lists of needed items, and notices of upcoming events and programs.

In last months article the details of the second by-law change were inadvertently omitted. The by-law concerning the election of officers and directors was changed so that all officers and directors serve a one year term. The previous by-law had some serving a two year term.

In the last month our organization spayed or neutered 9 dogs and 4 cats. Be mindful of your pets in this extreme heat – do not leave them in parked cars. If the temperature outside is 80 degrees the inside can get to 99 degress in less than 10 minutes; rolling down the windows does little to cool it down.

Also, school has started and some pets maybe experiencing loneliness. Don’t forget to spend extra time with them to

​ My name is Sophia Putman and I am an A-Honor student at Hancock Middle School. I am at the end of my 8th grade school year, preparing to enter high school. I enjoy reading and learning through new experiences. I love to play soccer and was a teammate on a recreational coed soccer team that won the championship last year in Charleston, SC. The National Flight Academy summer program is what I believe to be a once in a lifetime chance at exploring something beyond my comfort zone. I am grateful for the opportunity at being considered for this program and would enjoy learning and experiencing something I would never have had the courage to attempt on my own.

With taking my first flight in a Cessna 172 at the beginning of November 2017 at the private Diamondhead airport with the Young Eagles program, I was apprehensive, a little scared, but excited to navigate a plane that size that I’ve never been in before. My pilot guided me through the process of starting up the engine after conducting pre-flight checks. We taxied down the runway, and the adrenaline really made my heart thump as we quickly picked up speed.

Once the wheels left the ground, I knew at that moment that I loved flying.

Before I found out about the Young Eagles program, I never dreamed of having the capability or opportunity to navigate a plane. I was nervous on the first flight, but after first lift off, I knew I wanted to fly again. I believe the Flight Academy program will be challenging and I will put forth my best efforts at meeting those challenges head on. I did some online research about the program to see what it was about and if it would be interesting. It’s an exciting idea! I like advanced technology, virtual reality simulators, and flight simulators. I would like to expand my aviation science knowledge, and communication skills. I believe this program would be an excellent way for me to experience that in an interactive environment. I personally, learn better with hands-on training followed up with technical interaction. I am very goal oriented and can accomplish many tasks by myself or with a team. I prefer to work with others for the growth potential of everyone involved within the specific task. I look forward to the opportunity to learn more about aviation through this once in a lifetime experience.

golf course maintenance staff would have aerated the greens on DCC’s Pine golf course and will be preparing to aerate greens on DCC’s Cardinal golf course. Aeration is the process by which holes are put into the greens to allow for (air) to be able to get into the soil beneath the green. Aeration is needed when the soil beneath the surface of the green becomes compacted. When the soil is compacted, the grass roots struggle to breathe. This cultural practice is performed a couple of times during the summer when the grass is actively growing so that the time frame for healing is substantially reduced. A major reason for DCC having some of the best greens in our region is due to cultural practices such as aeration being performed on a consistent basis.

“Perfection is the enemy of reality.” How does this saying relate to your golf game?

The POINTS format was played twice last month.

The team scores for these two events are almost polar opposites. The first time the winning score was +19 shot by Val Miller, Durell Pellegrin, Don Perkins and Tyrone Sartin.

Second place was earned

by John Benus, Charles Cangelosi, Lenny Fontenot and Jim Sherrouse with a posted score of +10. The second time this format was used, the winning team Bernie Breen, Ron Rech and Tom Woolbright shot a + 2 follwed by Gene Demedicis, Ernie Knobloch and Joe Murray who tied with Dave Davis, A.J. Dilly, Roger Marquez and

Al Mast. Both teams recorded a score of even.

The same format produced two winning scores that were 17 points apart. Golf is certainly not a game of perfection.

The ABCD 2 Best Balls format showed that A.J. Dilly, Don Hertel, Bill Roofner and Tom Woolbright shot a team score of – 28 while Warren Alexander, Pat Jarrell and Tom O’Connell recorded a -27 for their efforts.

The SHAMBLE format produced some really outstanding team scores when Warren Alexander, Dick Armstrong, Warren Morgan and Dave Stein shot a -45 followed by Al Corban, A.J. Dilly Dave Gibbons and Tom O’Connell with a -40.

A SCRAMBLE format was played once resulting in some really close scores.

Mike Cavataio, Durell Pellegrin, Gene Sullivan and Tom Woolbright plus Charles Bell, Glenn Brooks, Don Hertel and Al Mast both shot 7 under par. Keith Benvenutti, Ernie Knobloch Don Perkins and Charles Riels recorded 6 under par while Warren Alexander, Randy Maynard, Charlie McCombs and Billy Stroud shot 5 under par.

In the Closest to the Pin competition, only Tom O’Connell won twice out of 20 attempts. Eighteen other guys won once.

In the overall winnings, Tom O’Connell leads the way followed by Gene Demedicis, Marty Herdon, Ron Rech and Tony Palma-

ture. Leading the overall scoring in the Closest to the Pin challenge, Mike Cavataio has won 10 times followed by Gene Demedicis and Tom O’Connell with 9 wins each.

Having trouble with your chipping? Golf Digest suggests that you move your two feet next to each other to prevent the bottom half of your body from swaying and move closer to the ball so that your stroke can basically be straight back and through.

Might be something to consider.

On May 17 our game was Cha Cha Cha. The winners were 1st Place Team Betty Bowen, Terri Woolbright, and Margaret Papaleo. 2nd Place Team was Vicki Stein, Georgeann Luxion, Jo Weber, and Patty Hourin. The 3rd place Team was Sharon Malochee, Rita Durham, Carol Kirschenbaum, and Phyllis Lilly. There were no birdies on this date. There was one chip in by Claudine Holmes on hole #5.

Closest to the pin were #4-Lotti Williams, $7Claudine Holmes, #13Cathy Weber, and #17-Ok Sang Hall.

On May 23 our game was Scotch Doubles. We were lucky to have a male partner with each lady.

The winners for the 1st First flight were 1st-Sharon Malochee/Charles Weber,

2nd Ok Sang and Larry Hall. 3rd which was a tie of Becky and David Stritzel/ Lottie and Harrison Williams. 2nd Flight winners were 1st-Patty Hourin/Bill Blackwood, 2nd-Vicki and David Stein, 3rd, again a tie with Margaret and Dennis Papaleo and Rosa Humphry/Paul Wyrosdick.

There was some good comradery that day I am sure!!

On May 31 the game was a scramble. The 1st place Team winners were Teresa Ertel, Terri Garrett, and Colleen Jones. The 2nd place Team winners were Lottie Williams, Becky Stritzel, JJ Skinner, and Rosa Humphrey. The 3rd place team winners were Ok Sang Hall, Marian Wideman, and Jo Webre.

Birdies given up that day were for Georgeann Luxion, Teresa Ertel, and Patty Hourin. Closet to the Pin for that date includes #4Teresa Ertel, #7-Ok Sang Hall, #13-Dianne Ackerman, and #17-Terri Woolbright. Chip-ins were recorded by Teresa Ertel and Ok Sang Hall. Looks like Teresa worked it out that day!

On June 7 it was Trophy Day. The overall net winner was Sharon Malochee.

1st Flight winner was a tie between Dianne Ackerman and Jodi Crosby. The 2nd Flight winners were: 1st-Cathy Weber and 2ndColleen Jones.

The 3rd Flight winners were:1st Rosa Humphrey and 2nd-Vivian Strader.

On June 21 our game was Individual Points. 1st Flight winners with a tie for 1st was Marian Wideman and Rita Durham, 3rd Becky Stritzel. 2nd Flight winners were 1st-Billie Crowley, and again a tie for 2nd with Terri Garrett, Colleen Jones, Bev Cox, Judy Amox, and Margaret Papaleo. Birdies that day were from Rita Durham, Terri Garrett, and Margaret Papaleo. Chip-ins were from Terri Garrett and Becky Stritzel. We had only 3 closest to the pin and they were #2-Vicki Stein, #6 Colleen Jones, and #13-Marian Wideman.

We buddied up with another golfer and competed. 1st Flight winners were: 1st Place-Terri Woolbright and Betty Bowen, 2nd-Marian Wideman and Georgeann Luxion, and 3rd-Sharon Malochee and Cassandra Godbold. 2nd Flight winners were 1st-Ruth Holmes and Claudine Holmes, and a tie for 2nd with Colleen Jones/Rosa Humphrey and Jo Webre/Margaret Papaleo. Ruth Holmes and Betty Bowen each had a birdie. Claudine Holmes, Betty Bowen(2), and Marian Wideman each had chip ins. Closest to the pin winners were #2-Betty Bowen, #6-Dianne Ackerman, #13-Dianne Ackerman, and #15-Cathy Weber.

Well, it is definitely June in Diamondhead, Mississippi! One minute it is 99+ degrees and the next it is pouring rain. And remember, during half of this month it wasn’t even officially summer. Don’t you jus love our weather patterns?

On the first Tuesday of June, our usual Trophy Day, sadly we were rained out.

Not to be deterred, we ventured out on the fol-

lowing Tuesday to play the game “Putter + 2 Clubs.”

Since this was a Scramble format with three players in each team, strategy is everything. But, once again, Mother Nature prevailed, and we only managed to get in 2 or 3 holes when she decided the fairways needed watering and down came the rain not to mention the thunder and lightening.

Now a little rain doesn’t usually stop us but that “thunder & lightening” thing is something else. So, back to the Clubhouse we scooted to wait to play another day.

Tuesday, June 19th — while a bit toasty — turned out to be a good day to play. This day’s game was called, “Mulligan Day.” In this format you play nine holes and may take one Mulligan (or do-over) during the play. But, choose wisely because once you have used your Mulligan you may not have another. Those who chose wisely were: First Flight: 1st Place = Ann Nutting, 2nd Place = Linda DeParto, and 3rd Place = Pat VanDervort. Second Flight: 1st Place = Beryl Laird, 2nd Place = Jerry Ingraham, and 3rd Place = Dinah Knobloch. And in the Third Flight: 1st Place = Carole Griffin, 2nd Place = Mary Mizell, and 3rd Place = Marsha Biestek. In addition, Judi Brannan (Hole #2) and Theresa Mauterer (Hole #6) had Birdies. Not to be left out, Marsha Biestek (Hole #8) and Carol Wyrosdick (Hole #7)

scored Chip-Ins. Congratulations Gals!

On the final Tuesday of June we were blessed with good, all though a bit warm, weather; and we played a traditional person scramble. Amazing - no rain, no thunder or lightening!

The First Place Team consisted of Shirley Halterman, Dinah Knobloch, Pat VanDervort plus a GHOST.

The Second Place Team included Marsha Biestek, Sylvia Corban, Beryl Laird, and Theresa Mauterer.

Our Third Place group was made up of Judi Brannan, Linda DeParto, Carole Griffin and Fran Smith.

Good job gals!

Hopefully, we will fare better weather wise during the month of July.

Sure hope Mother Nature is listening.
