Roles change with key players remaining the same CHRIS ALTESE, PGA DIRECTOR OF GOLF Thank you, Gregg! Gregg Altese, member of the Diamondhead Country Club Golf Professional staff for the past 10 years, will be changing roles as we enter the 2017 season. Gregg joined Diamondhead after working as a Golf Professional for The Oaks Golf Club for six years (1999-2006.) He will continue serving our DCC members and guests by instructing, assisting in the golf shop, and working with
our junior golf program. During Gregg’s stint as a full time DCC Golf Professional, our club has seen many improvements and became the host to many of our area’s top golf events. His dedication and hard work with our award-winning junior golf program helped DCC send five junior golfers to the U.S. Kids World Championships just this past summer with hopes of sending even more in 2017. Our club owes a huge debt of gratitude to Gregg for all he has helped us
accomplish at DCC since 2007. Laura McCann, PGA Professional and Diamondhead resident, will be stepping up in her responsibilities. Laura has been employed at DCC since October 2014 as an instructor primarily for the Golf Academy of Diamondhead. Having played college golf at Louisiana State University and four years as a touring professional on the SBC Futures Golf Tour including the 1995 U.S. Women’s Open, Laura brings with her a vast amount
of experience. Laura has served as a golf professional at both Great Southern Golf Club and The Oaks Golf Club. She earned her Class A PGA Member-

PUBLIC SERVICES FROM THE DESK OF FIRE CHIEF JERRY DUBUISSON Happy New Year!…We hope that you had a very enjoyable Christmas, and we wish you all a safe and prosperous New Year. Keep in mind that this is one of the most hazardous times of the year for fires and for car accidents, so think SAFETY every day. Dial 911 for ALL emergencies in Diamondhead. Please do not call the Fire Station directly to report an emergency, as those should be routed through our Dispatch center. For any non-emergency questions/ comments/information, you can call Dispatch at 228-2559191. NOTICE: For the first time since 2002…the Board of Commissioners of the Diamondhead Fire Protection District (Fire District) finds it necessary to increase the monthly fire fee, as the rising costs of operating a full-time, Town Class 5 Fire Department continues to outpace the annual revenue that we receive. Notices have been mailed out to advise of the rate increase, which will be effective January 1, 2017, and since we bill one month in arrears, the increase will be reflected on the billing cards to be mailed in February. The residential fee will be $25-per-month, and for those who wish to pay annually, thereby saving one month, the fee will be $275. Commercial fire fees will also increase, and those fees are based upon the square footage of the individual business occupancy. In F/Y 2015-2016, the monthly fire fee generated only 76% of the total revenue needed to operate the Fire District. Many residents and business owners have asked why they have to pay this fee since Diamondhead is
now a city. Very simply, the City of Diamondhead and the Fire District are two distinct and separate governmental entities, and for now, the Fire District receives no direct funding from the city tax millage. It is not financially feasible, at present, for the Fire District to be under the City’s governmental oversight. The Hancock County Tax Office (228-467-0130) advises that in order to operate the Fire District at current levels, the city’s tax rate would need to increase by approximately 15-mils, (approximately a 44% increase) in addition to the current city tax rate of 34-mils. Additional funding comes through Hancock County from a 4-mil tax assessment on real property in Diamondhead, a gaming tax, and a ¼-mil tax assessment which is required in order for the Fire District to be eligible to receive Fire Insurance Rebate funds. Those rebate funds are collected by the State, returned to Hancock County, and eventually, to the Fire District. As an alternative (and uncertain) funding source, we actively pursue grants to help offset the community’s overall cost to support the Fire District. The existing fire fees, tax assessments, and any grants received are still insufficient to offset the continuing rising costs of operating the Fire District, without an increase in fire fees. DFD Run Report...for the month of November; we responded to 87 emergency calls throughout Diamondhead. From January 1stthrough November 30th, we answered 859 emergency calls, for an average of 1 call every 9 hours and 22 minutes. Status Normal…As 2017 gets kicked off, DFD continues to operate as a full-time, paid Fire Depart-
ment. We continue to serve this City/community as a legal Fire Protection District, but we are still separate from the City of Diamondhead… separate from the Diamondhead P.O.A…and that is why residents and business owners pay directly to the Fire District, rather than having these services paid for by your taxes. Come visit us behind Rouse’s and see what we have for you! As promised last month, we begin our abridged history of the Hancock County Library System. It all started
back in 1935 as a WPA project. One of our first libraries was a log cabin built by a Mrs. Harrel and her sons. Things hummed along, largely through private donations and changed locations several times. In 1953 the library was established as a charter organization, which is defined as a document, issued by a sovereign or
state, outlining the conditions under which a corporation, colony, city, or other corporate body is organized, and defining its rights and privileges. At that time it was renamed the CityCounty Memorial Library. There were no branches until 1969 when a bookmobile was parked next to City Hall in Waveland. Progress!!

PUBLIC SERVICES SPCA OF DIAMONDHEAD We look forward to the New Year and ways to help adjust our plans and goals to help people and their pets. One of the main challenges in the past has been to return dogs back to their owners as quickly as possible. People say their dogs don’t get out, but there is always a chance of a maintenance person, family member visiting, or a neighbors child leaving a gate open. To ensure the fastest return of your pet have a collar on them with your phone number; even if they are chipped it does not guarantee a quick return. Also, often the owner has an electric fence. This usually works unless there is a storm, or if the electricity is knocked out. The dog may panic and flee. We are pleased to have participated in the City of Diamond-
head’s Third Annual Christmas on the Town Green. We enjoyed the festivities and collected a lot pet food for the Food Pantry. We have Ollie, a handsome one year old grey and white long haired male cat available for adoption due to an illness in the family. He is neutered, litter box trained, and all shots are current. It means the power is in the palm of your hands or right under your nose. What do I mean by that? Well, if you focus on healthy choices and
take a few deep breaths to manage your stress you have the power to make and maintain some healthy changes that may extend your life or at the least increase your enjoyment of it. When planning for the New Year, be sure to included ways to manage stress. Activities that bring you joy, make you laugh and include people you love being with not only lift your spirits, but also boost your immune system. Take time to reflect on what worked for you last year and bring those habits
forward. Notice what might need a little tweaking and recommit. Don’t forget baby steps will get you there; giant leaps may leave you flat. There are great resources on-line that can help and there are lots of great services, classes and activities right around here. Diamondhead is a great community for that, so take advantage of it. Right here in Diamondhead we have Health Clubs, great golf and tennis facilities, walking and bike trails, a Community Center and a Wellness Center. There’s everything from
Tai Chi and yoga to Line Dancing and Bocce Ball. I look forward to seeing you out there! We are so thankful for all of the Christmas decorations that Maggie Craig created. The table decorations of red shimmering Christmas trees enhanced with green and gold appointments were complimented by a larger colorful, lighted Christmas tree on a double table. The Newcomer Members filled the table and the floor with gifts for the residents of Woodland Village of Diamondhead. Thanks to all who chose to give to others. Several members were not able to attend the luncheon but still took their gifts to Woodland Village. Linda Bigler had more correspondence to share from our "Any Soldier" Master Sgt. Winn. He has been requesting more Zapp Potato Chips so Linda has sent more. We raised about $130 in the Any Soldier raffle and Milda Baker was the winner of a beautiful Christmas serving tray. Six lucky members had their ticket numbers drawn for the table centerpieces. Several expressed their appreciation because they were not decorating much this year and were looking forward to displaying the
pretty tree. On January 13, we will gather for lunch at the Diamondhead Country Club at 12:00 noon to "Ring In The Bling". Wear your "Bling" jewelry, clothes, hats, shoes or whatever "Bling" item that will help you celebrate the New Year. We will have our “Winter to Spring” fashion show for the January program. Look forward to seeing everyone on January 13. We had many new members at the December meeting along with past members that had not attended previously this year. Let this growth continue. Per our tradition, we enjoyed a spirited performance by the Hancock East Elementary Children's Choir, directed by Ms. Tara Ladner. This talented group of boys and girls, their parents and dedicated director invest a tremendous amount of time and practice into honing their kraft. If we had not known better, we would have thought they were professional singers. Surely many of these children have bright futures as recording artists!

Our next meeting is on Wednesday January 4th at 11:00 at the Country Club. Exciting events are being planned such as our annual fundraiser, Glitz N Titz. This celebration of sisterhood raised $12,000 last year for our charity, Pink Heart Funds. We look forward to the fun and frivolity of the party as we work to support Pink Heart, Pride with a Purpose, and Starfish Café. Stay tuned for details over the next few months! Members of the garden club met for a Christmas luncheon and plant swap on December 21st. We welcomed two guests to our meeting. Table decorations were made by several members of the club- each one different from the others. The January meeting will be held on January 18th at 9:30 a.m. in the Emerald I ballroom at the Country Club. We will have speaker Stephen Wyatt discussing "Recreating Eden" and member Judy Lee talking about preparing for the Great Backyard Bird Count will takes place February 17th through the 20th. Krewe of Selene crowns 2016-2017 Royalty BY SUE W. FOSTER The excitement in the room was palpable recently as members and guests gathered and eagerly anticipated the main event of the evening, the crowning of the new King and Queen of the Krewe of Selene, Danny and Kathy Simmons Cobb, at the Royalty Ball at the Diamondhead Country Club. But first, past Kings and Queens from all four Diamondhead Krewes were announced, honored, and greeted, one-by-one, with cheers from the large crowd in attendance. As they were announced, former Kings and Queens entered the ballroom to promenade around the dance floor, hailed by friends on all sides. Many Queens wore their glittering crowns which added a special, festive touch—what a site to see!! As the last former Royal left the dance floor, Founder and Captain of the Krewe of Selene, Terri Downie, recognized the 2015-2016 King and Queen, Albert and Jeannie Carapetian. They took their places on stage for the last time as Ms. Downie invited Kathy and Danny Cobb to join them. With much fanfare, and some reluctance, Queen Jeannie and King Albert relinquished their titles and crowned the 2016-2017 Royalty for the Krewe. Queen Kathy was radiant as she accepted her new crown and King Danny beamed at his lovely Queen. Queen Kathy’s crown is a beautiful nine-inch jeweled crown embellished by the Queen’s own design, featuring a marabou feather disk with an attached large jeweled encrusted piece and a long chain and dangling, jeweled crescent moon. The Queen’s gold scepter was similarly embellished and featured the dangling crescent moon—the symbol for the Krewe of Selene. King Danny was a most handsome compliment to his vibrant Queen in his black tails. The 2016-2017 Court was recognized and honored: Dukes and Maids Al and Marilyn Lott, Angie and Steve Burkhardt, and Kay and Jerry Peppenger. Gifts were presented to the newly-crowned Royalty and the first dance followed. Queen Kathy’s mermaid gown was sumptuous in gold and beige with silver and gold beaded appliqués. The beaded cape across the back of the dress was designed and handcrafted by the Queen herself and featured a beaded cross necklace created by her Mother, followed with a sparkling, jeweled chain and a dangling jeweled crescent moon, in keeping with the crown and scepter. All were attached to an ornate 1950’s gold and pearl sweater clip. Queen Kathy is most unique and we are all delighted! Congratulations to the 2016-2017 King and Queen and their Royal Court!!!

Krewe of Diamondhead Coronation Ball 2017 BY NICOLE BOISDORÉ, PUBLICITY LIEUTENANT The Krewe of Diamondhead celebrated its 41st Annual Coronation Ball on Saturday December 3, 2016 at the Diamondhead Country Club. As the ballroom doors opened, members were greeted with a beautiful landscape created by Social Lieutenant, Teresa Ertel, complete with music by the band, South. Candles glowed, lights sparkled and a buzz of excitement filled the air. Libations were enjoyed in anticipation of the ceremony and party to follow. The 2016 Royal Court returned in their Mardi Gras Ball attire to bid the Krewe farewell. They were Maid and Duke Jan and Gary Wiley, Maid and Duke Susan and Jim Hightower, and Maid and Duke Mary Alice and Rick Sierveld. Following their Court were the reigning King and Queen: Ali i honua XL LM Rice and his Queen Karen Rice who ascended to their throne and awaited the arrival of the Court and King and Queen-Elect. In keeping with a revered tradition, the Royal Guard of Past Kings entered the ballroom to retire the King and Queen’s scepters and present the crowns for the King and Queen-Elect. The Past Kings present were Their Royal
Highnesses: Bill Bahner, 1994; Henry Kibler 1995; Chuck Garrison, 2003; Jim Frisina, 2007; Jerry Peppenger, 2011; Ray Sheehy 2012 (Captain Emeritus); Mickey Hatem, 2013; Harold Dawley 2014; and Al Grace, 2015. The members of the Krewe deeply appreciate their dedication and service and hold fond memories of their reigns. Excitement began to build as the moment for the Court-Elect and King and Queen-Elect arrived. The Mistress of Ceremonies, Her Royal Highness 2009, Nicole Boisdoré, proudly presented the Court-Elect. The Maids-elect were Jan Menker, Jamie Morgan, Suzy Smith and Annette Williams. The ladies were lovely in black floor length gowns and black opera-length gloves. Their Dukes, handsomely attired in traditional black tuxedos were: Sid Wright, Peter Morgan, Hoppy Smith and Mark Miller. The Court-elect took their places on the stage and eagerly awaited the arrival of their monarchs. With three Herald Calls, Queen-Elect Donna Mallory was introduced. Donna was elegant in an ivory silk floor-length gown adorned with pearls, by Gatlin’s of Gulfport, and matching opera-length gloves. Next presented was the King-Elect, Diamondhead Mayor Tommy Schafer. Mayor
Schafer was regally attired in traditional black tails by Perlis of New Orleans. The handsome couple took their places at the throne and were crowned Ali i honua XLI and Queen of the 2017 Krewe of Diamondhead Royal Court by the outgoing King and Queen. The members joined the Captain, Her Royal Highness 2013, Sandy Hatem, in a champagne toast to welcome the new Royal Court, wishing them a splendid reign over Diamondhead for the upcoming Mardi Gras Season. To end the ceremony, King Tommy made his Royal Proclamation, thanking the Krewe for the honor and excitedly looking forward to the season and the Krewe of Diamondhead Parade. A lovely dinner was enjoyed by all and dancing began as the band started the party! The members had a wonderful evening, staying well past the scheduled “end time,” convincing the band to keep on playing! All members wish to extend their thanks to South for graciously keeping the party going strong until the wee hours! The members of the Krewe of Diamondhead wish our fellow krewes and residents of our community a Merry Christmas, the Happiest of New Years, and a wonderful Mardi Gras season. It was great to have the talented Bon Operatit! with us and I can’t wait to have them back. The 2nd Annual Christmas Buffet was well attended & all had a good time. Even if you don’t play golf you might know someone who does…please tell them all to come play our Diamondhead golf courses. DCC is a favorite site for the PGA Tour and the Gulf States PGA. We will once again host the qualifiers for the PGA Tour Champions Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic in mid-March on DCC’s Pine golf course. Thanks to all of our residents and members for making PGA Tour feel welcome. It is because of all of you that the PGA Tour and the Gulf States PGA considers us as their second home. Speaking of the PGA Tour Champions, keep in mind that the Mississippi
Gulf Resort Classic will be seeking volunteers to help with the event being held at Fallen Oak in late March. This is the premier sporting event on the Gulf Coast and it will be televised on the Golf Channel. You do not have to be a golfer to help and get involved. This is a fun way to help out, meet lots of new people, promote Diamondhead, and enjoy time with your friends while watching some really great golf from the legends of the game. In the Closest to the Pin competition, Tom O’Connell had 11 wins followed by Billy Stroud, Bernie Breen, Glenn Conover and Warren Morgan with 7 wins each. Durell Pellegrin, Al Mast and Mike Cavataio had 6 wins each followed by Dick Armstrong, Bob Terry, Gene Sullivan, Ralph Strader and Pat Jarrell with 5 wins apiece. Billy Stroud and Joe Murray both had hole-in-ones during 2016. Approximately 100 players won money during 2016. In the PEERS POINTS format last month the team of Warren Alexander, Dave Gibbons, and Bill Vandervort led the way with a -15 score followed by Harry Fifield, Bob Gregoire and Ernie Knobloch with -9. In the MIXED POINTS format played the team of Russell Mayeur, Jr, Bob Terry, Ernie Knobloch and Renny Pangan posted a – 10 whileTyrone Sartin, Ton O’Connell, Durell Pelegrin and Gene Bordelon were 7 under par. One wet day a SCRAMBLE was played in which Warren Alexander, Mike Cavatio, John Sneddon and Gene Sullivan won with 6 under par followed by Charles Cangelosi, Don Crosby, Joe Murray and Dave Stein with 4 under par. A SHAMBLE was played once during which the team of Pat Laird, Tom O’Connell and Bill Roof-
ner (90 years old now and still playing every week!!) recorded a team score of 34 under par while Durell Pellegrin, Tyrone Sartin and Tom Woolbright posted 31 under to come in second. Those are some seriously good scores for this format. In the TWO BEST BALLS format with all threesomes, the team of Ernie Knobloch, Warren Morgan and Gene Sullivan led the way with 22 under par followed by two teams with scores of 21 under. They were Tyrone Sartin, Warren Alexander, Bob Terry and Pat Laird, Durell Pellegrin, plus Bill Vandervort . That’s some excellent scoring in a 3 man format. I recently overheard one of our golf professionals working with a lady who was taking a lesson for the first time in her life. She asked “Is the word spelt p-u-t or p-u-t-t? He replied “Put means to place a thing where you want it. Putt means merely a vain attempt to do the same thing.” May your putting in 2017 be less in vain! Finally, be sure to pick up four golf application for 2017 in the Pro Shop and remember to try to get one additional golfer to sign up to play with the DMGA in 2017. DWGA NEWS BY CAROL CONOVER Happy New Year! A DWGA favorite tournament was Turkey Day on the Pine November 17. Each player received a turkey replica that was placed wherever they landed after hitting 72 strokes plus their handicap. The tournament was flighted by
handicaps giving everyone a fair chance of winning. However, not everyone makes it to the 18th hole. The players winning first place in their flight received a $50 gift certificate for a turkey from Rouses grocery. All others won money added to their account in the pro shop. The First Flight winner was Ok Sang Hall; Rita Durham was 2nd, Betty Bowen was 3rd and Janice Preble 4th. The Second Flight winner was Terri Woolbright; Toni Rossol and Cathy Weber tied for 2nd, Dianne Ackerman was 4th, and Vivian Strader 5th. The Third Flight winner was J.J. Skinner; Vicki Stein was 2nd, Marian Wideman was 3rd, Carroll Gothie was 4th, and Patty Hourin 5th. Birdies were enjoyed by Betty Bowen and Vivian Strader on #6, Cathy Weber on #11, and Carroll Gothie #15. Closest to the Pin winners were Marian Wideman #2, Beverly Cox #6, and Georgeann Luxion #13. Carroll Gothie won the drawing for a $50 gift certificate. The monthly Trophy Day was December 1st. It was a low net event on the Cardinal. Winners in First Flight were 1st Amy Swint, 2nd Becky Stritzel, and 3rd Ok Sang Hall. Second Flight winners were 1st Judy Amox, 2nd Terri Woolbright, with Jo Webre and Joanne Fried tied for 3rd. Becky Stritzel chipped in a birdie on #3 and had another birdie on #16. Closest to the Pin were Becky Ross on #4, Lottie Williams on #7, Joanne Fried on #13, and
Brenda Dunham on #17. Another DWGA favorite is the Christmas Scramble and luncheon. It was a cold and windy start, but the gals warmed up to a fun threeperson scramble on the Cardinal. The last couple groups in were the winners with Mary Lou Czaplicki, Brenda Dunham and Becky Ross taking First Place; Jodi Crosby, Cathy Weber and Patty Hourin came in Second; and Ok Sang Hall, Betty Bowen and Beverly Cox came in Third. Beverly Cox had the only chip in of the day. During the Christmas luncheon, ladies who won trophies throughout the year were again recognized and Mary Lou Czaplicki received the Most Improved Trophy. Also everyone having one birdie or more during the year received a token prize. Maury Hodgens represented the DHCC Pro Shop and received recognition and a big thank you for all the work he did for the DWGA during the year. The DWGA President received one of her favorite things as a thank you gift, and her name was also drawn for a $50 gift certificate. Holiday Celebrations, and the ladies of the Nines can usually be found in the midst of these activities. At the time of our last article only the competition results of our Pink Hearts Tournament were available but not the total amount of funds raised for this worthy cause. So, in case you were wondering how we made out, our hardworking ladies raised over $6,000! Once again, thank you to Linda DeParto and her very hardworking committee. Well done gals! Tuesday, November 1st, was our usual Trophy Day Competition. Seventeen of our members turned out to play. And the following ladies were rewarded with great scores: Flight #1 — Low Gross - JoAnne Carlson, Low Net - Margaret Sherwood, Low Putts and Closest to the Pin - Sue Richards, Longest Drive -Marilyn Galus. Flight #2 — Low Gross, Longest Drive, and Closest to the Pin - Nancy Sislow, (Looks like it was Nancy’s day to shine.) Low Net - Cheryl Saak, and Low Putts Charlene Smuck. In Flight #3 — Low Gross - Lesly White, Low Net - Carol Magers-Wyrosdick, Low Putts and Closest to the Pin - Dinah Knobloch, Longest Drive - Renie Dack. In our Match Play Tournament the field is now being gleaned to eight players. Watch for updates on this on-going competition. SPORTS inclement weather caused our Colored Ball Competition to be cancelled. November 15th was our “Turkey Day Competition.” For the curious, in this game, players who sign up in advance are provided with a picture of a Turkey bearing the score they should be able to shoot based on their current handicap. The challenge is to shoot that score or lower. We also had Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin competitions that day. Those who were able to match or beat their scores were as follows: Flight #1 — Shirley Halterman shot her turkey and got Closest to the Pin, Longest Drive - Marilyn Galus . Flight #2 — both Beryl Laird and Kathy Jones shot their turkeys, Longest Drive and Closest to the

On Tuesday, November 22nd, we played a Two Person Scramble. It was a great November day, and the First Place team consisted of Linda DeParto and Renie Dack. Second Place Team (in a scorecard playoff ) was composed of Margaret Sherwood and Kathy Jones. While the Third Place Team (also in a scorecard playoff ) included Marsha Roberts and Carol Magers-Wyrosdick. With several scorecard playoffs it appears competition is getting tight. Both Linda DeParto (Hole #4) and Kathy Jones (Hole #7) scored Birdies, and Pat VanDervort got a
Chip-In (Hole #1). Nice job gals! For the final Tuesday in November, we again played a Scramble (this time with 3 member teams). The weather cooperated even though it was a bit Muggy. We were only able to field four teams and the First Place winning team was made up of Carol Laux, Gay Young, and Sylvia Corban. The Second Place team (once more in a scorecard playoff) was comprised of Marsha Roberts, Cheryl Saak and Lesly White. We know that while reading this your celebrations are well under way, and The Ladies of the Diamondhead Nines take this opportunity to wish you and yours the Most Blessed and Happy Celebrations!
LETTER TO THE EDITOR The lead article in December’s Diamondhead News claimed that Mississippi’s Supreme Court in Perry v. Bridgetown approved incorporating covenants into bylaws without expiration dates as a way to extend a POA's covenants. That case has zero to do with extending covenants.* It’s about enlarging POA assessment and architectural control powers through bylaws. Whether our POA can extend our covenants by canceling their expira-
tion provision and changing their amendment provision via the bylaws as was attempted in 2010 — that is a whole different question, about to be tested in the DPOA’s latest lawsuit. The anonymous writer’s claim is properly characterized as disinformation. It’s shameful to use the Diamondhead News like this. *You can read it by googling Perry v.
