Diamondhead observes Memorial Day with ceremony under the oaks There was a nice breeze blowing for the Diamondhead Memorial Day Service held on Saturday, May 23, under the oaks. Guest speaker Bob Walker, USMC, spoke about his experiences on Iwo Jima, and Guest of Honor Captain Marc Eckardt, USN, gave a speech about leadership and the next generation. Besides rousing military and patriotic music, the names of Diamondhead deceased military men and women were read.

CAMPAIGN SIGNS 2015 is an election year! The primaries and runoff will be in August and the general election will be in November. Many of you may choose to support your candidate during this election period. There are many ways to do so but, please remember campaign signs are not allowed. Diamondhead POA covenants prohibit the posting of campaign signs on POA or residential property. Please be a good neighbor and responsible resident and not place or allow campaign signs to be placed on your property.

Annual DH POA Membership Meeting June 20, 9 a.m. at the Diamondhead Community Center

DIAMONDHEAD VETERANS MEMORIAL BANDSTAND DEDICATION July 4th 10 am: The Diamondhead Veterans Memorial Bandstand located directly in front of the Diamondhead City Hall will be dedicated on July 4th at l0 am. With one of the highest percentages of Veterans in America, it is fitting that our new bandstand be dedicated to our veterans.

One out of every two Diamondhead residents is either a veteran or living with a veteran. We are proud of our warriors who served in WWII, Korean, Vietnam, the Gulf Wars, Iraq, and Afghanistan along with those who stood vigilant during peacetime. All Diamondhead veterans are asked to participate in this historic dedication ceremony and all Diamondhead residents are encouraged to attend to express their support for our veterans. Music will be provided by the Pass Christian Orchestra.

May is here and with it the summer heat has arrived.

The Baseball season is almost over and it has been an exciting time for all our sportsmen. Thanks to all the coaches and the rest of the volunteers for their tireless efforts.

The Tennis Association is enjoying their new clubhouse and they had their grand opening on May 9th. I am still trying to find time to start back playing tennis. Every time I drive past the courts I am impressed with the great number of players enjoying the sport.

Bingo is still being played each Wednesday in the Emerald room so all are invited to enjoy the gaming.

They need more players as participation has fallen off lately.

Your hanger at the Airport has a new roof. This was sorely needed as the old one dated back over 30 years and was in bad repair. It was damaged by Katrina and the patching was no longer successful.

Line Dancing instructions are at the Community Center on Fridays at 10:00 AM. I participate, and invite everyone to come and enjoy this hour of dancing. (This is a great aerobic exercise routine) I have not been able to attend lately do to an operation but intend to start back soon.

Don’t forget to send in your letters to the editor before the 15th of the month. This activity has been picking up.

Let us know of your concerns.

Remember the DPOA open board meetings are scheduled for the last Tuesday of each month unless there is a conflict. Mark your calendars and try to attend.

Now the real important news of the Membership meeting June 20, 2015 at 9:00 AM: At this meeting there will be 3 propositions for the members to vote on. My thanks to Mr. Yarbrough and Ms Dutton for taking the time to submit these 3 propositions concerning needed changes to DPOA Bylaws. You can see the tremendous amount of work and effort they put into writing these propositions.

Basically Mr. Yarbrough’s propositions are concerning voting. Proposition 1 allows absentee voting, while his Proposition 2 allows anyone to monitor the voting process. These are for elections of board officers and directors.

Ms Suttons Proposition deals with the number board members changing the total number to 7 from the present number of 11. These are the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and 3 Directors. All will have 2 year terms.

These 3 propositions will streamline the DPOA and improve the voting process. I wholeheartedly endorse all 3 Propositions and I urge everyone to vote in this election.

Since the DPOA gave the streets to the City the duties of your board have been reduced drastically and along with Absentee voting the board will be more responsive to the members.

GENERAL MANAGERS REPORT

By Mark Boyd With the arrival of June we are now enjoying summer weather, the official start of summer is the 21st which is also Fathers Day!t We have several projects in progress, the golf course renovation project is at the midpoint looking at completion the first part of July. We are finishing up a new ADA/Family restroom at the East Rec facility and will be remodeling the pool bathrooms this month. Work is progressing well on the football/soccer fields on Noma Drive. This will be a welcome addition to our amenities, especially for Diamondhead families that are active in football and soccer. We will complete the playground improvements the first week of June. The new play set was installed the week of May 4th with the ground cover the last part of the project.

The club had a tremendous turnout for the Mothers Day buffet, the food was outstanding as was the variety. Great job to all that made it a success. Eli has grand plans for Fathers Day as well.

Even with half of the Pine course closed, golf continues to be extremely active and our golf staff is busy with the variety of tournaments and events.

Our third annual “Family Fun Day” will be Saturday June 13th, held at the Country Club pool and areas adjacent to the pool. There will be fun and games for the children, hope everyone that attends enjoys themselves.

There will be local elections this year, with the primary and runoff in August. A reminder, the posting of political signs on private lawns in Diamondhead is prohibited by the covenants. The City of Diamondhead has ordinances for signs as well. Please be a good neighbor and choose the most appropriate way to support your candidates.

School is out and the children will be active along the roadways and at our recreation facilities, please keep an eye out for the little ones while driving. And as always, lets be safe and respectful of others that utilize the amenities.

FINANCIAL STATEMENTS AS OF APRIL 30, 2015 Kelly Allen, Controller For the four months ending April 30, 2015, the POA had an operating profit (beforedepreciation) of $729,536 and a net income (after depreciation) of $478,886, whichwas $407,775 better than budget. For the month ending April 30, 2015, the POA had an operating profit of $142,004 and a net income of $79,626, which was $56,659better than budget. Gross profit (revenue less cost of goods sold) was $42,165 better than budget while operating expenses of $420,925 were $11,871 below budget. Revenue for the month of April was $52,617 above budget of $577,741.Membership Assessments were budgeted at $60 per month, while actual billing is $65 per month, causing the revenue overrun. Total Expenses Year to Date are $76,794 below same period last year, partially due to lower Legal Expense, Commercial Package Insurance, and Professional Fees.

The audit of the 2014 financial statements is complete, and was presented by theauditors at the May Open Board Meeting. A copy of the audit is posted on the website, with member access and password, and is available for review at the POA

PUBLIC SERVICES CITY OF DIAMONDHEAD WWW.DIAMONDHEAD.MS.GOV The City recognizes Sgt. Darrell Hughes of the Diamondhead Police Department for his courageous actions leading to the apprehension of armed robbery suspects. Last month, Sgt. Hughes was involved in a high-speed pursuit west-bound on I-10 in which he has been credited with bringing the vehicle carrying the suspects to a halt, ultimately resulting in the arrest of three individuals involved. We would like to thank Sgt. Hughes, the entire Diamondhead Police Department, Hancock County Sheriff’s Office and all law enforcement personnel for putting their lives at risk daily to ensure our safety and well-being. It is important that we, the citizens, do our part as well. Remember to be vigilant in securing personal belongings. Whether in a vehicle or around the residence; secure belongings by locking vehicles, closing garage doors, and making sure items are less conspicuous.

PARKING IN MEDIANS Parking in the medians is prohibited. Ordinance 2012-013 Section 14-230 prohibits parking in medians. With advance approval of the City Manager, over-flow parking may be

permitted in medians for special events such as family gatherings, parties, etc. Contact City Hall in advance of any planned activity to obtain a parking permit at no charge. For properties owned by the POA, contact that office directly for permitted parking.

SOLICITING ON ANY STREET, ROADWAY OR NEUTRAL GROUND Ordinance 2012-013 Section 14-188 strictly prohibits the solicitation of business, employment or charitable contributions of any kind from the occupant of any vehicle from any roadway, shoulder of any street or neutral ground.

Hurricane Season 2015….Yes, it’s that time of year again…and if you already have a hurricane plan in place, that’s great! If you don’t, now is the time to start planning and preparing. If you’re not sure how to put a plan together, call DFD, or the Hancock County EMA at 228-395-1545. Please assess your own personal situation now, so that you are prepared BEFORE a storm threatens. In

April....we responded to 70 emergency calls in Diamondhead. On average, we’ve responded to an emergency call in Diamondhead every 10 hours and 29 minutes through the first four calendar months of 2015.

To help us help you, we ask that you make sure your address is clearly marked on BOTH sides of your street-side mailbox so that we can find your house quickly if you have an emergency. Fire Hydrants….We ask that while you are out working in your yard, please pay attention to (and remove) any obstructions that might prevent us from seeing or connecting to that nearby fire hydrant. The property you help to save may be your own! Station Construction Update….Last month, we wrote that our building’s foundation should have been in place, and that some walls might actually be standing by the time you saw our May article.

Well, we were wrong….but we’re going to say the same thing for this month! Maybe the second time is the charm? Thanks for your patience as we continue with this project.

COMMUNITY ST. THOMAS EPISCOPAL CHURCH Well summer is here. Schools are out.

Hurricane season has started. Hopefully we will be blessed by not having any storms this year.

St. Thomas Episcopal invites anyone who is looking for a place to worship to attend our services. On Sundays we have services at 8 AM and 10 AM. On Wednesdays we have Holy Eucharist and Anointing for Healing at 5:30 PM, followed by a pot luck meal and discussion.

MOST HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church has formed a Ladies’ Club. The purpose of the club is strictly social. Twenty-six women came together the first night to form it.

They decided they would not have officers nor would the club have any fund raisers.

They would have a covered dish dinner and following dinner a game of some sort. The next month they had forty-seven women and enjoyed an evening of eating, socializing, and playing Bunco. Meetings will be once a month and games will vary. Please check the bulletin for more information on the time for the next meeting. Come and bring a friend. DIAMONDHEAD COMMUNITY CHURCH Mary Alice Sierveld JESUS IS COMING-YOU BETTER LOOK BUSY School’s out-what are you going to do with these kids?? Something fun, close to home, not too pricey?? And maybe they’ll learn something valuable too?? We’ve got the answer!

Start with enrolling the little dears in VBS-vacation bible school. Our theme this year is Under the Big Top. The children will learn about using their gifts alongside Penny Worth at her new job with Percival Von Schnitzell’s Big Top Circus. Children ages 5 to 5th grade head under the Big Top to discover the three ring circus of some of the Bible’s most interesting characters. The program runs from July 6th-10th from 9 to 11 am.

When that’s over, register them for the DCC Soccer camp at the Diamondhead East Rec field from July 13 to 165 from 8:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. or 11:30 depending on age. The camp is open for kids 5 and up.

The cost for 5-7 year olds is $55 and $65 for kids 8 and up. Doug Stoval returns as our Coach Extraordinaire. He holds a National USSF “B” license and a National Youth license. Among other successes, he coached Willaim Carey College for 17 years directing them to 7 National Championship appearances and two final four appearances. The kids will be in very good hands! DIAMONDHEAD SPCA We received sad news recently. Raisin Lu passed away. We express condolences to Linda Williams, John Hall and Daisy Mae. I mention Daisy Mae because she and Raisin Lu were together so long. She will grieve and be sad and lonely. Pets have feelings the same as we do. They know when we are low or sick. They give us love and affection with no strings attached.

DIAMONDHEAD COMMUNITY GARDEN

By Susan Holcomb Mr. Charles Cangelosi has adopted a bed at the Garden. His pruning skills are only surpassed by his ability to eliminate wayward torpedo grass that unwisely set up residence in his bed. While I find it necessary to use either The Claw or The Weasel to extract the torpedo grass by the roots, Mr. Cangelosi has amazing skill with a hoe.

By the time you read this we hope to have already had a visit from the Mississippi National Guard Youth Challenge Academy cadets who have been so helpful in the past. The plan for their visit is to evict torpedo grass and invasive weeds from the garden and place a fresh covering of mulch as well. Diamondhead Garden Club is assisting with the lunch we plan Raisin Lu and Daisy Mae to serve our volunteers at Twin Lakes pavilion,

and will also provide some supervisors.

Two more concrete pads have been added to the Blue Star Memorial so additional memorial bricks can be emplaced in honor of our veterans. If you would like to place a brick in honor of a veteran at the Blue Star

CLUBS DIAMONDHEAD GARDEN CLUB Brierley Acker The Diamondhead Garden Club held its annual flower show in April at the Diamondhead Community Center in conjunction with the Spring Pilgrimage. The title of the show was Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

This theme was chosen since the day before the show was Earth Day. The basic theme itself was recycled from 2010 when the show was titled Let’s Go Green and held on Earth Day. The entrance featured a manikin wearing a dress made of plastic bags that had actually been worn before as a Halloween costume. The show featured 98 horticultural specimens and 12 designs. All designs were required to have something that had been reused or repurposed.

Blue Ribbons in design were won by Marilyn Bliler, Helen Taylor, and Brierley Acker. Top Exhibitor Awards were won in horticulture by Charlotte Crowe, Penny Crawford, Mary Street, Bonnie Falgout and Linda Naron. The Horticultural Excellence Award was won by Bonnie Falgout for a show stopping Phalenopsis allegriia. Many other members won blue ribbons for their horticultural exhibits. Linda Naron won the Sweepstakes Award for the most Blue Ribbons.

There were two educational exhibits. One was on protecting the Rotten Bayou Watershed

from chemical and runoff pollution, and the other detailed the decomposition rates of items found in the landfills.

While the flower show was being judged four club members, including new members Brandi Stage and Lynn Roberts worked in the kitchen creating large flowers designs that were placed in the homes on display during the pilgrimage.

Sisterhood was held on April 17-18, 2015 at the Golden Nugget Hotel & Convention Center in Biloxi. Kaitlyn Laurent, Senior at Our Lady Academy Bay St. Louis, was awarded a state Miriam Scarborough Scholarship (MSS) in recognition for leadership and academic achievement. Ms. Laurent, in addition to being sponsored by P.E.O. Chapter T Diamondhead, also received an additional $500 award through Chapter T. P.E.O. is an International women’s philanthropic organization where women celebrate the advancement of women: educate women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans and stewardship of Cottey College; and motivate each other to achieve their highest aspirations.

NEWCOMERS Our members dressed in their very best Hawaiian outfits at our final 2014-2015 Newcomers Aloha Luncheon on Friday, May 8. We laughed as we played a fun gift exchange game. A gift was passed around as our president, Chris McCann, read a ten verse poem telling the players to pass the gift around their table. The verses were funny and so creative! All the members listened carefully to the instructions and really enjoyed following directions! Cecile Finney did another great job with the table decorations. Some of our members won the cutest island themed decorations to take home with them.

We held our regular Any Soldier raffle. We were all happy to hear that our boxes of very basic toiletry items are well appreciated by our deployed military men and women.

Thanks to Linda Bigler for holding the monthly raffle and packaging and mailing the boxes.

Chris McCann thanked all of her officers for this year. She introduced the new officers for the 2015-16 year. The officers are: Mary Ann Cantin, president; Pam Boudreaux, vice-president; Janat Woolley, secretary; Ann Latham, treasurer. We are all looking forward to another great year with our new board! There will be no luncheons during the summer months of June, July, and August. Our new year will begin with our annual tea held at the Diamondhead Community Center on Friday, September 25, 2015. Reminders and any other details about the Annual Welcome Tea will be in the August issue of the Diamondhead News. Be sure to check it out!

The purpose of our club is to provide a time and place to meet your neighbors and friends for a relaxed lunch in a fun and caring atmosphere. You do not need to be a new resident of Diamondhead to enjoy the camaraderie of our club.

It is estimated that anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries among female athletes range from about one tear for every 10,000 games/practices among high school basketball players to about three tears for every 10,000 games/practices among college soccer players. ACL injuries, which are largely associated with the short stops and pivoting motions common among basketball and soccer players, are also more common among female athletes due to gender-specific biomechanics and movements.

However, young female athletes may be able to prevent such injuries if they undertake neuromuscular training routines early on. Studies indicate that starting training by age 14 helps female athletes reduce the incidence of knee-ligament injuries by 72 percent compared with waiting to undergo training in college.

We will resume again on September 2, 2015 for a new year with new officers that were installed at our last meeting.

Our president for the next two years will be Jan Wiley, our Vice President will be Debbie Sykes, Our secretary will be Barbara Quebedeaux and Treasurer will be Jamie Morgan. The fund raisers for the year were a great success. Our last fundraiser Glitz and Titz that was held April 21, 2015 raised $7,894.51.

MAP PRODUCING THE LITTLE MERMAID MAP will be producing Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr. this summer for children 3rd grade - 12th grade.

This will be a play production, not a camp. It will be held at the Waveland Civic Center on 335 Coleman Ave, Waveland, directed by our wonderfully talented Ms. Bonnie Hoeg.

This is free to all Hancock County Kids The schedule: Registration and auditions: Tues June 2, 10:00am Rehearsal: Wed June 3, 10am - 2pm (BRING LUNCH) Rehearsals: M, T, W June 8-10, 15-17, 22-25.( Lunch will be provided.)

Set Building and painting: Fri. in June 12, 19, 26 Performances: Fri July 10, Sat July 11 There will be no rehearsals June 29 - July 3.

No rehearsals on Thursdays. Fridays will be for set building and painting.

All interested children will need to audition, and come prepared to sing a song. Everyone

who auditions will be given a part; the actors will be advised which rehearsals they will attend.

Everyone in the play may not be required to attend every rehearsal.

In order to make this work smoothly we will need help from parents, and will need to know what days volunteers can commit to. As before, we will need assistance with costumes, set building and painting, and lights/sound. We would love to know if anyone has any experience with choreography and music.

We are so looking forward to seeing all of you this summer, and performing this fun play. Please let us know as soon as you can if this format will work for you, and if you can give us any assistance.

Diamondhead Boaters Go “Stompin’ At the Savoy” for their 2015 Mardi Gras Ball on January 24, 2015

By Sue W. Foster Big Band music and pearls were the impetus for the theme of the Krewe of Kamehameha’s exciting tribute to “Stompin’ at the Savoy”.

Ingenious theme interpretation by Ball Chair Ciindy McNamee, the creative talents of local artist Sylvia Corban, and many hands worked in concert to recreate the large ballroom feel of lively music and dancing ‘til dawn on a magical night.

Entering the ballroom was like stepping through a portal to a bygone era where 40-piece orchestras and dressing to the nine’s were the order of the day. The band for the evening, “Jamm”, fulfilled all expectations for the Big Band sound and guests willingly obliged by wearing their finest attire to honor King Akua Kai the 40th Fred Dack and his beautiful Queen, Renie Ford Dack, at Diamondhead’s own Savoy Ballroom.

The stage in the ballroom sported an enormous New York City Skyline back drop, complimented by Swing Dancer Silhouettes floating on glittering fans in gold and salmon handpainted by Sylvia Corban and suspended on black behind the King and Queen’s table. Fresh flower arrangements of white spider mums, roses and carnations in vases filled with large pearls and crystals on mirrored surfaces graced the tables.

The festivities began with Commodore Harry LaCoste’s introduction of Master of Ceremonies, Mark Miller, who danced his way to the podium to “Stompin’ at the Savoy”, twirling ladies along the way. Mark entertained the crowd with facts and anecdotes about the “World’s Finest Ballroom” at the Savoy with its 10,000 square foot dance floor, pink interior and mirrored walls.

The Savoy gave us the Lindy Hop, Flying Charleston, Jive, Shimmy and Mambo, among others, all danced to incredible house bands and performers such as Chick Webb, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, and a teenaged Ella Fitzgerald.

Visiting Royalty from other Krewes were recognized as were past Royalty of the Krewe of Kamehameha, members of the Royal Order of the Dolphin, and family

and guests of the King and Queen: Tom and Ginger Ford of Mandeville, LA; Bob and Deborah Ford Burris of Covington, LA; Dale and Pat Ford Branch of Bogalusa, LA; Sid and Mary Mizell of Diamondhead MS, and Hoppy Smith and Suzy Fair, also of Diamondhead, MS. The Royal Court presentations began as the maids and dukes entered the ballroom. Each maid carried one-of-a-kind black feature fans embellished with ribbons and jeweled masks, created by Pam Marshall to match each gown.

Sashaying down the aisle to “Opuys One” were Duke Doug Skinner and Maid J. J. Skinner while Duke Wayne Departo and Maid Linda Departo sauntered to “In the Mood”. Lastly, Equerry Joe Murray strutted down the aisle to “Take the ‘A’ Train” with his Lady-in-Waiting Mary Craig Murray.

After the Maids and Dukes had taken their places, King Akua Kai the 40th Fred Dack and his lovely Queen Renie Ford Dack were announced and entered the ballroom to the traditional “If Ever I Cease to Love”. As they made their stately way down the aisle, King Fred and Queen Renie stopped frequently to acknowledge members of the audience. Queen Renie wore a stunning gown with slim-fitted tailoring, beaded embellishments and a ruched halter neck. Mantles and matching trains were worn by the King and Queen in silver and gold, decorated with sea shells, as befitted the Boaters Association. The King and Queen were attended during the tableau by Jim Ross and Bill VanDervort.

King Fred and Queen Renie promenaded around the ballroom and to the stage where King Fred read his proclamation and honored Queen Renie with a touching toast: “Your lips so warm and sweet as wine, Your check so soft and close to mine, divine, How my heart is singing, While the band is swinging, I’m never tired of romping and stomping with you at the Savoy”.

King Akua Kai the 39th, Sid Wright, toasted the Royalty on behalf of the members of the Krewe, followed by the entertainment for the night: Mary Mizell’s choreography to a rousing dance number written

by New Orleans’ own Louis Prima in 1937: “Sing, Sing, Sing”! The “band” played, the dancers danced, and all paraded and cavorted around the dance floor, to the delight and appreciation of the entire audience.

Dancing were the incomparable Mary Mizell, Alice Burkhardt, Joanne Fried, Dinah Knobloch, Pam Marshall, Leslie O’Neill, Audrey Ramirez, Kathy Rowell, Gayla Torguson and Jan Wiley, “accompanied” by band members Henry Burkhardt, Hank Fried, Ernie Knobloch, Gale Marshall, Jack O’Neill, Charlie Rowell, Larry Torguson, and Gary Wiley on a unique collection of horns and woodwinds.

Ball Chair Cindy McNamee was introduced and expressed her appreciation to the many helping to recreate such a amazing period.

In addition to Sylvia Corban, Ms. McNamee recognized Mark Miller, Doug Maxwell, Paula Gonzales, Audrey Ramirez, Jim Ross and Bill VanDervort, Becky Ross, Pattie Dicke, Sandy Hatem, Dinah Rhoades, Brenda Smith, Sue Foster, Mary Mizell and all of her entertainers, Bob Marshall, Gale Marshall, Tracy and Gary Ward, Nancy and Tom Begley, Barb Quibedeaux, Victoria Magers, Pam Marshall, Martha Bryan, Scott McNamee, Alice Burkhardt, Jamie Read, Patrick Read, Kathy Flynn, Ellen Titus, Kitty Gregoire, Annette

Williams, Joyce Gross, Bobbie Yaniga, and Dinah Knobloch.

To commemorate their reign, a gift of a Mignon Faget water pitcher was presented to the royal couple from the Krewe by Becky Ross. A Mardi Gras Ball is never complete without the crowd favorite “Second Line”, so none were surprised when Ms. MaNamee presented Queen Renie with a one-of-a-kind silver Mardi Gras umbrella, adorned with blue feathers and appropriate beads and glitz, bejeweled and beribboned for Queen Renie by Sandy Hatem.

To Quote the Master of Ceremonies at the beginning of the festivities, “Tonight we go back to the swing era when tuxedos and beautiful gowns were standard fare, the music played all night and people danced ‘til their feet hurt; a time when every weekend was carnival in Harlem.” This night of “Stompin’ at the (Diamondhead) Savoy” was much the same, bearing in mind that music and dancing all night in Diamondhead usually means until 9:30 p.m. but on this magical night continued until 11 p.m.

We will be hosting our “FAMILY FUN DAY” on Saturday, June 13th for Diamondhead POA Members. DPOA Members can enjoy complimentary range balls at our practice facility from 1:00pm – 4:00pm and a 40% off sale in the DCC Golf Shop. The Golf Academy of Diamondhead will be running a putting contest/clinic on the ½ hour as well as many other FUN activities around the club. Please be sure to join us!

All novice, intermediate, and advanced golfers, please join us for Wacky Wednesday FREE! Par 3 Golf on the 3rd Wednesday of each month beginning in June and running through September. Each month your golf professional staff will set up one of the nines as a par 3 course for those interested in coming out and having some fun on the golf course. You and your group can play any format you like…scramble play, individual play, or maybe even a friendly 4-ball match with your buddies. Open to all Diamondhead POA Members and DCC Annual Golf Members. All players will play from designated par 3 tee markers.

In the 2 Best Balls format, the team of Renny Pangan, Gary Riera, Bob Terry and Gene Bordelon posted a score of -28, the same as Bob Gregoire, Larry, Hall, Jim Brown and Tay Guilmino. The next place team composed of John Bunce, Joe Murray, Ronnie Bankston and Robert Smith were close behind with a score of -26. Of the twelve teams that played that day, six of the remaining teams were within two points of being in the money. That was a very competitive event.

In the Points format, the team of Tom O’Connell, David Stein, Richard Armstrong and Jim Lebeau led the scoring with a +19.

The team of Remy Pangan, Bob Gregoire, Val Miller and Bob Terry came in second with a +14 followed by a +10 posted by the team of John Bunce, Pat Laird, Bill Young, and Ken Pullen. The best individual scores were shot by Jim Lebeau with +11, Jim Brown +10, Ralph Strader +6 and Dutch Vandervort +5. It seems as if the DMGA needs to reinstate the Performance Enhancing Drug test procedures!!

In the Shamble format, the team of Durrell Pelegrin, Dave Gibbons, Val Miller and Jim Brown led the scoring with a -31, followed closely by the teams of Tom O’Connell, Dave Stein, Ralph Strader and a Ghost plus John Bunce, Joe Murray , Gene Sullivan, and Jim Lebeau. Both of these teams recorded a -29. In the Closest-to-the Flag competition, Renny Pangan was the only person to win twice.

Due to the front of the Pine course being closed for renovations, be sure to sign up ahead of time either at check-in the week before, or sign up on the list on the bulletin board in the locker room by Monday evening. Since tee times are now being used, be sure to check the DMGA website on Tuesday to find your tee time. Finally, if you’ve signed up to play, and something

comes up that prevents you from playing, be sure to notify the Pro Shop on a timely basis.

If this is not done, confusion is created as the teams start to play.

We had many times to practice that fiveinch test in April as the weather cooperated and we had a good turnout for our events.

April 2nd was trophy day. The Winner Over the Field was Pat Ellis. First Flight: Lottie Williams - 1st place and Betty Daniels, 2nd place. Second Flight: Cathy Weber - 1st place, Judy Lakota - 2nd place and Patty Hourin - 3rd place. Third Flight: Cindy McNamee - 1st place, Beverly Cox 2nd place and Rachel Stewart - 3rd place.

Birdies: Becky Stritzel (#3) and Pat Ellis (#3 and #18) Chip In: Betty Bowen On April 9th we played “Best Nine Holes”. The winners in Second Flight had Jo Webre (1st) and Marian Wideman (2nd) tied for first and Terry Woolbright in 3rd place. Once again the weather tried very hard to play havoc with our Tuesday golf events. We did, however, manage to get in our SCOTCH DOUBLES event on April 7th. 44 people played in 22 teams.

This is an 18-hole event and the following teams were the Low Gross winners: 1st Place - Linda DeParto/Dick Armstrong; 2nd Place - Margaret and Don Sherwood; and 3rd Place - Cheryl and Bob Saak. Low Net winners were: 1st Place - Jerry and Chuck Ingraham; 2nd Place - Cheryl and Joe Doyle; and 3rd Place - Linda and George Framnes. Dinah Knobloch also scored a Chip-In.

Our Pal Day scheduled for April 14th had to be cancelled due to the heavy rainfall that occurred during several days prior to the event.

Unfortunately, our two-day Annual Aloha Tournament had to be shortened to a one-day event. Our Overall Winner was JoAnne Carlson. Congratulations JoAnne.

Great job! Since our group was smaller than usual, we awarded only 1st & 2nd Place winners in each flight.

First Place in Flight 1 was earned by Sue Richards with Second Place being gained by Cheryl Saak. In First Place in Flight 2 was Marilyn Galus and Second Place was taken

by Kathy Jones. Mary Murray took First Place in the Third Fight followed by Dinah Knobloch in Second Place.

Cheryl Saak had the Longest Drive for Flight 1 while JoAnne Carlson scored the longest drive in the Flight 2 and Sylvia Corban in Flight 3. There was only one winner in our Closest to the Pin Event. It was won by Cheryl Saak of the First Flight.

On Tuesday, April 28th, the ladies of Diamondhead Nines were invited to join the gals of Pass Christian Isles at their Annual Invitational. This year’s theme was “Fifty Shades of Green.” Once again, the weather turned very soggy and 20 + members of the Nines joined the PCI gals for indoor golf related games, prizes and a great lunch. We will return the favor by inviting them to join us at Diamondhead in early October. Let’s hope we will be blessed with better weather at that time.

SPORTS BIG KAHUNA GOLF TOURNAMENT; DIAMONDHEAD SPCA TO BENEFIT

By Don Smith This year’s 36-holes of individual medal play will be contested on the Cardinal Course on 11 -12 July. The weekend will kick off with a social mixer for players and guests Friday, 10 July at our Country Club. A meal will be provided along with a cash bar.

Tropical attire preferred.

Women will compete from the Reds. Men 65 years of age and over may select either Gold or White tees. Other male participants tee it up on the Whites. The “2015 Big Kahuna” will be the individual with the lowest two-day aggregate gross score and may come from any division.

Nick Beale captured the title of Big Kahuna and The Shootout Champion in both 2013 and 2014.

As the woman with the low gross score, Emily Ross became the first recipient of the Mamie Calmes Wahine Stroke Play Award in 2013 and successfully defended her title in 2014.

A 9-hole Shootout will be held on the Cardinal following Saturday’s round. Shootout participants include the nine low gross scores and ties from across the field. One additional player – the Loose Coconut – will be drawn from the remainder of the field to round out the competition. During the Shootout, competitors play from the same tees they qualified from. Para mutual gaming is available with all money being paid out to the gamers. Spectators are encouraged to pick their favorite player to “win, place, or show” and enjoy the excitement of the Shootout.

Each division (Red/Gold/ White) will be divided into flights following Saturday’s round.

Players who may feel they “shot themselves out of the tourney” on Saturday still have an opportunity to cash in on Sunday with each flight having a Low-Round Non-Winner prize. Entry fee also includes “skins” and “nearestthe-pin” contests both days of the tournament. A special prize will be offered for the first hole-n-one of the tournament. Each player also receives a commemorative

golf cap donated once again by longtime supporter John Cook.

Refreshments shall be provided during play both days.

Continuing with our tradition of giving something back to our community, 100% of ticket sales from this year’s raffle will go to the Diamondhead SPCA. Raffle tickets will be available the week of the tournament and may be purchased by anybody wishing to take part. Additionally, any contributions of dog or cat food, pet treats, or cat litter will be appreciated.

OP/ED Dear Editor: The POA board halved its responsibilities by creating the city and hiring a management company but still has 11 directors, many of them unresponsive to property owners as a whole. They have blocked dues reduction as well as accountability and transparency measures that were overwhelmingly demanded by owners in last June’s election.

Bain & Company management consulting firm has found that every person added to a decision-making group over 7 reduces their effectiveness by 10% and lessens their accountability. Many companies have since downsized their boards: Apple, for example, now has 8 directors, Netflix just 7. The Forbes Group advises nonprofit associations to “radically downsize” boards to ensure that they deliver services that members/ property owners want.

Harvard economics and law research has found that long and staggered terms of office like ours, where only part of the board is up for election at a time, produces “entrenched” boards, prone to vote their own and management’s interests rather than those of shareholders.

Shareholders have since exerted such pressure that now nearly 90% of Standard & Poor’s 500 companies make all directors stand for election annually.

Frequent elections of all POA directors are the primary means for property owners to influence board policies.

Our diminished property values call out for change. We need an accountable board willing to identify what owners and potential buyers want instead of mistakenly thinking it knows best. The way to get that, research shows, is through downsizing the board and having frequent elections for all. We have therefore proposed seven bylaw amendments (included in the annual meeting notice) that will result in a board of 7 directors with all elected every 2 years.

Diamondhead’s future depends on needed change, and the membership’s votes are essential to protecting their investment here. If approved, the 7 bylaw amendments will give members a stronger voice in influencing board policy. If members cannot attend the

I would like to thank the POA Board for serving the people of Diamondhead. As one who has been there, I am well aware of the sacrifice of time and effort required of you. It is certainly not easy to try to meet the demands of 8,000 or so people while being constrained by no less than eight various laws, agreements, rules, etc. spelled out in hundreds of pages of documents, while sometimes being the target of “rock throwing” by people who, as often as not, do not have their story correct. I pray that the Lord will someday allow the “side liners” to realize that using their God given talents to actively serve the people of Diamondhead is far more honorable and rewarding than sitting on the side lines and throwing rocks at the people who do.

Do we always agree with POA Boards? Absolutely not. However, on balance, Diamondhead is a great place to live, retire, work, and play precisely BECAUSE of the collective work of the many people who have in the past… and continue today… to care and to serve. While we are not perfect, our Diamondhead Community is way, way ahead of most other places we might live.

Since the officers frequently organize and run as a slate, this proposal would give control of the board to the 4 officers who may well have a common agenda. Garage Sale Chapter T of the P.E.O. Sisterhood will be holding a garage sale on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at the Diamondhead Community Center from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. P.E.O. is a philanthropic educational organization that supports women’s education through grants, scholarships, loans, and the stewardship and owners of Cottey College in Nevada, MO. The P.E.O. sisterhood was founded in 1869 by seven teenage girls and currently has 235,000 members in the United States and Canada. The International Chapter P.E.O. Sisterhood has given/awarded $263,919,157 since 1907. Mississippi has 709 active members in 23 chapters and MS women received over $100,000 in awards in the 2014-2015 year. All chapters sponsor women in their area for project awards and are always looking for applicants. Campaign signs 2015 is an election year! The primaries and runoff will be in August and the general election will be in November. Many of you may choose to support your candidate during this election period. There are many ways to do so but, please remember campaign signs are not allowed.

Diamondhead POA covenants prohibit the posting of campaign signs on POA or residential property.
