A few years ago, Rick Long had a dream of opening a wine business in the Shamokin area. He wanted this to be a welcoming and unique place and he searched for the perfect location.

When the Liberty Fire Company became available he thought what better place could there be? He purchased the building immediately. Many hours and months went into the building to renovate both floors. The first floor became a tasting room with an old time rustic theme, while the second floor has been renovated as a cozy banquet hall for catering with a coal mining theme, keeping true to the history of the region. The Firehouse Winery opened it’s doors in 2016.

The Firehouse Winery manufactures and bottles all their wines in Shamokin with something to suit everyone’s taste. We have created a unique label design which gives recognition to the remaining fire companies in the area. Each wine flavor is labeled with the name of a fire company along with their engine number.

Three Beards Brewing is the brainchild of Nate Badman, Sean Brennan, Matt Reinard, and Levi Strouse. We brew beer that we love, because we love to brew beer!

We started as like-minded beer drinkers who grew tired of the bland taste day in and day out. While Pennsylvania holds some of the best craft breweries in the world, we often found it difficult to find that exact taste we were looking for, and decided to start brewing for ourselves. We quickly started brewing off the wall beers we deemed worthy of sharing with other craft beer addicts. Through their encouragement, we found ourselves participating in local beer festivals and sharing our beer with thousands. The overwhelming support from these festivals catapulted us into our current endeavor, and we couldn’t be more excited to share our passion with the masses!

In 2015, while attending the Selinsgrove BrewFest, Spyglass Ridge Winery owner Tom Webb discovered a love for the frothy creations of Three Beards brewers. Tom had been considering building a brewery for some time and felt that Three Beards may be what he was looking for. He arranged a meeting with the brewers and the rest is now history! Just over a year after meeting, a Brewery for Three Beards is currently under construction on the grounds of Spyglass Ridge Winery.

Our Story From its inception in Wilcox, Pennsylvania, to the present-day facility in Liverpool, Pennsylvania, owners, Mike and Carol Williams have strived to do well, to do well, and to have some fun. That’s the essence of what we have done since 1994, when we first opened our doors.

Under the ownership of Mike and Carol we have built our reputation with a line of top quality products and unsurpassed customer service. Eleven years ago, son Jamie came on board as a part owner and Vice President, his sister Lisa followed five years later as retail and wholesale sales manager in Ohio.

Hunters Valley Winery was founded by Bill and Darlene Kvaternik in 1987 on an idyllic spot overlooking the Susquehanna River. They poured their energies and affection into the winery and anyone who set foot on the property can tell.

When Bill originally approached us about purchasing the winery it was bitter sweet. We were excited about an opportunity but deeply saddened by the circumstances leading to it. After much deliberation we decided to take the leap.

One thing that we decided early on is that we wanted to preserve Bill and Darlene’s legacy as much as possible while still retaining our personality as well. We are going for, “Hunters Valley with a Winery at Wilcox touch.”

Wine Basics Storing Wine If you’re ready to make wine a serious hobby and want to set up your own cellar or purchase a special wine refrigerator, great. But, you don’t have to go to all that effort and expense to maintain the quality of wine you serve at home. As long as you don’t have a large collection that you plan to store for many years, you should be pleased with the results if you simply follow the general rule of choosing a cool, damp, dark place. Your home probably has a suitable area like a basement, closet, or garage. For wines you plan to store more than a few weeks, it’s best to lay the bottles sideways instead of standing them upright. This keeps the cork moist, maintaining an air-tight seal.

Serving Wine Temperature Rules of Thumb: •

Chill white wines, fruit wines and sweet wines to about 45° F before uncorking and serving.

•

To bring out the best flavor, serve reds at room temperature or chill slightly below—about 55°–70° F.

•

Port-style and other dessert wines are best served between about 60°– 65° F.

Uncorking and Pouring: • If possible, choose a corkpuller that includes a small knife, which makes it easier to cut foil over the cork.

•

Use gentle pressure as you insert and turn the spiraled wire into the cork, then hold the bottle firmly as you pull the cork out.

•

For sparkling wines, pay attention to safety. Lift the cork partially with the corkscrew, just enough so you will be able to grasp the cork with your hand. Then gently remove the corkscrew. Pointing the bottle’s tip away from yourself and others, grasp the cork firmly and turn the bottle, slowly working the cork out.

•

Fill glasses about ⅓ to ½ full. This exposes more air to the wine, improving the flavor. It is customary to stand to the right of a guest as you pour.

Useful Terms for Describing Wine When describing wine, wine merchants, restaurant servers, and your oenophile friends will use specific language to tell you about its characteristics. Knowing these words will help you understand the wine they’re describing: • Aroma or bouquet: The smell of a wine — bouquet applies particularly to the aroma of older wines • Body: The apparent weight of a wine in your mouth (light, medium, or full) • Crisp: A wine with refreshing acidity • Dry: Not sweet • Finish: The impression a wine leaves as you swallow it • Flavor intensity: How strong or weak a wine’s flavors are • Fruity: A wine whose aromas and flavors suggest fruit; doesn’t imply sweetness • Oaky: A wine that has oak flavors (smoky, toasty) • Soft: A wine that has a smooth rather than crisp mouthfeel • Tannic: A red wine that is firm and leaves the mouth feeling dry 22
