CHILDREN ARE THE FUTURE

This special section is filled with back to school advice, but more importantly The Daily Item asked 13 school districts to share the answers to two questions. The first question posed to the outgoing 2025 kindergarten classes was “Who is your hero?”, and the second question was “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. You will not be disappointed in the heartfelt answers they shared.

Early childhood is a critical time for personal development. During this period, many intellectual, physical and emotional changes are taking place in a child’s body at a rapid pace. Parents want to give their children the best opportunities for success in life, and encouraging children to read is one of the ways they can help youngsters develop intellectual and emotional maturity.

Help a child grow as a person

Parents want their children to be successful, healthy and happy. That often means providing the best education they can, encouraging quality friendships and being supportive when a child may need some extra guidance. Although there is no magic formula to guide children toward becoming the best versions of themselves, here are steps that parents and other caregivers can take to promote youngsters’ personal growth.

Help kids find their lanes. Parents may only know what they experienced and the paths they took. It is reasonable for

mothers and fathers to want their children to follow in their footsteps, and sometimes parents push their kids into paths that do not fit. Helping kids find their niche requires trial and error, patience, and even creativity. Eventually children will discover their passions, particularly when encouraged by their parents.

Provide love and support, not criticism. Parents can be their kids’ biggest fans, but not at the cost of doing everything for them or shielding children from disappointment. They also should not be harsh critics. To

help shape strong children who can grow and mature, parents have to find a balance between being supportive and watching every move and preventing any obstacle. Adversity can help kids grow.

Share your own stories. Children may be embarrassed by struggles or failures and want to give up. One of the best ways parents can be supportive is by sharing stories of one’s own struggles and how they overcame them. Perhaps a parent can help a kid who is finding material in school challenging by telling a story about a poor

test grade and how he or she needed tutoring but was able to improve performance later on.

Talk about mistakes that ultimately proved learning opportunities. Children may believe they have to be perfect at everything, and that can set them up for failure when they don’t accomplish every goal. Adults can offer an example of a mistake they made that helped them grow, such as getting stuck in foul weather on a hike because they didn’t check the weather, and having to travel miles in wet shoes. That learning experience may have helped the adults be

more mindful of being prepared for outdoor events.

Make time for fun. Success doesn’t always come just from hard work. It also involves knowing when it is time to let loose and unwind with enjoyable activities. Then again, learning opportunities don’t always need to be chores. Learning through play and exploration also is possible.

Children can grow and develop positive traits with support from their parents.

Tips for choosing the right lunchbox for your kid

Choosing the right lunchbox for your child ensures their meals stay fresh, safe and enjoyable throughout the school day. Here are four important things to consider when selecting a lunchbox:

1. Material. Look for BPA-free, foodgrade plastic or stainless-steel containers. These materials are easy to clean and maintain, reducing the risk of food contamination. Additionally, stainless steel is durable, making it a great option if your child is prone to dropping or tossing their lunchbox around.

2. Capacity. Choosing a lunchbox that fits your child’s appetite is essential. For instance, if your child is a big eater, you may want to consider a larger box. Remember that a lunchbox that’s too big or too small can result in food waste or hunger.

3. Compartments. Look for a lunchbox with multiple compartments for better organization and portion control. Compartments can also prevent various food items from getting squished or mixed together. Some lunchboxes come with removable dividers so that you can adjust the size of the compartments based on your child’s needs.

4. Insulation. Prioritize insulating and leakproof features. This helps keep food fresh and prevent spills, especially perishable items and liquids. Look for lunchboxes with insulated compartments or include an ice pack to maintain the desired temperature.

Lastly, let your child help choose their lunchbox so they’ll be more excited about using it. Choose designs, like cartoon characters or animals, that reflect their personality and interests, making lunchtime an enjoyable experience.

When it’s time to call in a tutor

Busy schedules, hybrid learning and demanding coursework have affected students’ academic performance over the last years.

A recent report from the Fairfax County Public Schools Office of Research and Strategic Improvement in Virginia found the number of middle and high school students with two or more failing marks increased by 83 percent in the first quarter of the 20202021 school year compared to the year prior. But students’ grades may slide or they may find certain school work overly challenging even in normal years. Since many parents have not seen a periodic table or had to solve high school math problems in decades, tutors may be just what students need to regain their academic footing.

Failing grades are not necessarily the most notable indicator that students can benefit from the services of a tutor. The Princeton Review says 25 percent of high school students say homework is their biggest source of stress, and homework progress can help parents determine if it’s time to call in a tutor. Students who find their homework is taking too long, particularly double or triple the amount of time it once required, may need some extra help. Here are some additional indicators that a tutor may be needed.

• Declining test scores: Some students are simply poor test takers, but a gradual or sudden decline in test scores may indicate students are having trouble mastering material. Teachers can pinpoint if certain concepts are overly challenging to students and notify parents if there are any problem areas.

• Poor time management or focus: Students who are struggling may have

their attention drift or they put off doing tasks because they don’t grasp the assignments.

• Lack of homework help at home: Parents may have prior commitments during the times of day when their children are doing homework. Even when parents are home, they may discover that the concepts covered in school are not being taught in the ways parents learned them and they may have difficulty assisting their children. Tutors can step in and help students when parents cannot.

• Learning disorder: Certain students learn differently from others due to a diagnosed or undiagnosed learning disorder. A child who is struggling with reading, phonics, spelling, and writing may have dyslexia, according to the tutoring experts at Dyslexia Practitioner NJ. Tutors who specialize in learning disorders can assess and address learning conflicts and tailor instructions in ways that can help students overcome those challenges.

• Students “shut down” or say they “hate” school: Disinterest in school or expressions of hating going to school may be indicative of academic struggles in the classroom, says the Princeton Review. Some students get so frustrated they simply give up. Tutors can solve learning puzzles and help get students back on track and reignite their interest in school.

Tutors can be valuable resources for students who need some one-on-one attention to master general learning concepts or reinforce skills for key tests or projects.

How to help students improve their focus on their studies

Teachers strive to create supportive and challenging classroom environments for their students. Such settings can bring out the best in students and help them overcome obstacles, including an inability to focus.

The struggles students can have with focusing on their studies was apparent during the pandemic. A 2020 survey of more than 400 college students found that 64 percent were concerned about their ability to maintain their focus and discipline in remote instructional environments. Students may need help focusing on their studies.

• Emphasize one activity at a time. Various studies have shown that multitasking adversely affects performance and makes it hard to concentrate. A recent study from researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that performing two or three activities simultaneously puts significantly more demand on the brain than simply doing those tasks one after another. All students, and especially those who are struggling with focus, should be encouraged to take on one task at a time.

• Take breaks. The Cleveland Clinic notes that various studies have found that periodic breaks improve mood, boost performance and increase a person’s ability to concentrate and pay attention. Many students are well acquainted with lengthy cramming sessions on the eve of a big exam, which can feel like a rite of passage for high schoolers and college students. Parents and educators can emphasize

the importance of taking breaks during such sessions and how periodic rest can help improve performance.

• Take a piecemeal approach to big tasks. The Child Mind Institute notes that breaking big tasks down into smaller, more manageable pieces can help kids effectively tackle more challenging tasks. The piecemeal

approach can make big tasks seem less daunting, and the success kids have at each smaller task can provide some needed momentum as they draw closer to solving the problem.

Many students struggle to focus on their studies. Some simple strategies can help students overcome such challenges and fulfill their academic potential.
