The Bag Ladies who want to save us

N TOWNS and cities across the world you can see Bag Ladies, usually poor women with their worldly goods in plastic bags. Meet Daylesford’s Bag Ladies, on a mission to rid us of the deadly carry-alls.

Research finds these bags turn into tiny bits and may end up in seafood which we eat, poison wildlife and choke seabirds.

A Senate committee recently found there is a "toxic tide" of marine plastic pollution, including plastic shopping bags and wants a campaign to explain the differences between degradable, biodegradable, compostable and traditional plastic bags, and how to get rid of them.

If the Bag Ladies have their way Daylesford should be well ahead in the fight to rid us of poisonous plastic.

Among those involved is Robyn Rogers, pictured, who says, “We want to stop the free distribution of single-use bags and are lobbying the State Government for a ban".

Such an edict is in force in South Australia, the Northern Territory, Tasmania and the ACT, she says.

If they don’t have their own bag South Australians may choose a cardboard box or pay 10 cents for a bag. A similar levy is imposed in the UK, where the number of bags dropped by 85 per cent in the first six months after the impost in October 2015.

A staggering five billion plastic bags are handed out each year in Australia, with a mere 3 per cent recycled, says Robyn. And shoppers use each bag for an average of just 12 minutes.

The Senate inquiry was told “degradable" plastics contain additives that make them disintegrate more quickly than traditional plastics and can break into fragments less than five millimetres in size.

Boomerang bags made of recycled fabric given by the community will be offered from wooden boxes outside Coles and Tonna’s. Shoppers will be encouraged to bring reusable bags or, if they forget, use a boomerang bag.

Signs will show shops that have dropped plastic bags.

“You don’t need to line your bin with a plastic bag,” says Robyn, "you can simply wash it".

She says single use bags, plastic bottles and straws may be banned from major events run by the Hepburn Shire, which kicked in $2000 to the campaign.

“Our group, Plastic Free Daylesford, also got a boost from a gift of 500 bags which had been misprinted. All we had to do was turn them inside out and stencil our logo.”

Coles manager James Nesci says the supermarket wants to initially increase the number of items in each bag to begin reducing the number used. “We are trying to encourage reusable bags so as to reduce our footprint.”

He said South Australian tourists were surprised the bags were still used here.

When the campaign is under way the Daylesford tip will take discarded plastic bags, which St. Vinnies will weave into mattresses for the homeless.

Nine people are involved in the launch on March 31. A free screening of the documentary A Plastic Ocean will be held at the Daylesford Cinema on April 20. An estimated eight tonnes of plastic goes into the sea each year.

If the war on bags succeeds a second front will be opened up, says Robyn. The group has its sights set on plastic bottles.

Not only dumped bottles make problems but studies also show that while most types are safe to reuse at least a few times if properly washed with hot soapy water, food and drink kept in them can contain traces of a synthetic chemical that may interfere with the body’s natural hormonal messaging system. And repeated use of these bottles—which get knocked about through normal wear and tear and while being washed—increases the chance that chemicals will leak out of tiny cracks and crevices that develop.

Exciting journey for a botanical artist

M

ARCIA DeVincentis is a botanical artist. But she didn’t realise until well after her interest in botanical art took hold that she had a family history in the field.

Marcia’s great-great-grandfather was a collector of plants and collected and illustrated many of the plants that grew in India. He also corresponded with and collected seeds for William Hooker who became one of the most influential British botanists of his time. And then her great-grandfather did the same for William Hooker’s son Joseph with the letters and paintings kept in the archives at Kew Gardens in London. That same great grandfather also painted over 100 studies of the Nepalese landscape being the first explorer sent by the East India Company, with William Moorcroft, a vet, to explore Tibet and its surrounds in 1812. Seventeen of those paintings are in the British Library as a reference.

"I have always had a love of nature and an interest in botany which came much later in life. I studied horticulture and agriculture as one of my ‘many lives’ after a long career as a director in childcare and as a personal assistant in my husband’s (Michael) architectural practice followed as a partner in Biggin & Scott Daylesford.

Having worked with children earlier and having a family of my own, there were always basic art programs in childcare but there never seemed enough time left in a day to pursue my own art interests until much later in life.

Inspired by my own small but beautiful garden in Melbourne, and looking longingly at a pumpkin flower one day, I decided that being able to capture that precise intricate golden profile would be a wonderful thing to do. I especially love to paint fruit and when I paint flowers, I love the smell of them; it seems to add more to the painting.

I enrolled in a workshop in the UK at West Dean College in 2007, knowing nothing much about watercolour painting, with Sandrine Maugy, a left-handed botanical artist. Being left-handed myself, the opportunity arose to attend the botanical workshop and a very proud but inspired beginner finished the class with a small but very beautiful pumpkin painting. It was this experience that encouraged me to begin a new interest in botanical painting.

My studio isn’t grand; it’s a room in my home with plenty of light and a bit of dust. I have a table to spread my work out, a lamp for extra light and a magnifying lamp, paints, water and paper and of course, some music and my dogs.

It’s very good to have dogs, when each layer of paint needs to dry, it’s off my chair and out for a walk among the oak trees with three papillons skipping along – fresh air, lots of wind or sun and exercise for all of us – what more could make you happy?

I began a formal diploma course in 2008 through the Distance Learning Diploma with the Society of Botanical Artists in the UK which finished in 2010.

I am a member of the Botanical Art Society of Australia and the Whirlybirds at the Botanical Gardens in Melbourne – a group of botanical artists who meet weekly to paint at the Whirling Room at the Melbourne Gardens.

Since moving to Daylesford to retire, I found that the region was very rich in botanical material and talented artists but there were no groups that gathered here for botanical painting. I was able to join the botanical artists group in Ballarat. I would love to hear from other botanical artists here in Daylesford (0417 962 116) and have our own Daylesford group that meets often for the day to share ideas and critique each other’s work and support each other. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to paint plants that grow in our own Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens?

I think that anyone can become a botanical artist – it just needs a wanting to illustrate plants that inspire, (everyone has a little nature love in them) a little time for just ‘you’, some basic equipment and there’ll be no looking back. Never be daunted – I was told that it takes 10 years to be perfect at botanical painting – I think it does, but I never wanted to be perfect, just the journey to get to paint is so exciting. It needs to be your own journey, with your own style being the best, and, most of all, your very own special love of a plant will make you want to capture it somehow - I think the adventure never ends.

I have learnt that my passion for botanical painting never seems to wane – there is always a new plant to discover and many hours to spend gazing at fruit and vegetables for that perfect profile, at a market, store or farm shop. Never take any notice of perplexed people who watch in the background, wondering what could be so interesting about a carrot, an apple or an artichoke. There are also new media to work with, many journeys to exotic places with accomplished painters' workshops to attend and many more artists to talk to…the journey for a botanical artist is so very exciting.”

Auction of former Glenlyon Church postponed

HE auction of the former Glenlyon Anglican Church has been postponed due to a “fault” in the Victorian Government system regarding the Traditional Owners Settlement Act.

The auction, by Hocking Stuart Daylesford, was scheduled for last Saturday, March 25. The church's final service was on December 23 last year.

Dja Dja Wurrung Corporation chief executive officer Rodney Carter said the church had been situated on Crown Land and under the Traditional Owners Settlement Act, the corporation should receive some financial compensation from the State Government if the land was sold.

“The Dja Dja Wurrung has rights under State Government commercial law, and our rights were not recognised," he said.

Mr Carter praised Sissy Austin, a Gunditjmara woman and former Glenlyon resident, pictured above second from left, who brought the matter to public attention last week.

But Mr Carter said the Dja Dja Wurrung, the Anglican Diocese of Bendigo and the State Government were now involved in talks which would lead to a resolution.

“We have a really good relationship with the State Government and with the broader community and always work in a polite and courteous manner.

“The conversation is about the state (government) understanding our rights and we have found a few faults along the way. This is one of them and I don’t think it will ever happen again. It’s a one in a million thing.”

Ms Austin wrote to the Bendigo Diocesan Trust saying that after obtaining a title history search statement, it had been confirmed that prior to 2014 the Fleischer Lane property was Crown Land.

“The land was ‘temporarily reserved by an order of the Governor in Council on the 5th of July 1869 for the purposes as a Church of England place of public worship and minister’s dwelling’,” she wrote.

“The township of Glenlyon is situated on Dja Dja Wurrung land. The Dja Dja Wurrung Traditional Owner Settlement went through in 2013.”

The Anglican Parish of Daylesford’s Father Jeff O’Hare said the diocese was “working diligently to resolve this situation for everyone’s benefit”.

“My only frustration in all this is what is halted is the bigger picture stuff, programs we can offer the community through the development of our property and the growth of Daylesford as the result of the sale of St John's.

“The money does not go into profit, it goes straight back into community engagement of which all people are welcome. No-one is excluded.”

The Anglican Diocese of Bendigo, in a newsletter on its commitment to Indigenous Australians, said it was “committed to working with the Dja Dja Wurrung Corporation in relation to matters concerned with native title, as is the situation with respect to land the diocese is seeking to sell at Glenlyon in Central Victoria”.

“In conjunction with the Corporation the diocese will follow due process.”

Hocking Stuart Daylesford's website says: “Constructed in 1873, and opened in February 1874, the church is set on approximately 4000 square metres and comprises a brick building with entrance and nave, plus a reclad original presbytery".

"The church has no existing kitchen or bathroom facilities, but offers great promise as a unique residence or conversion to a luxury holiday abode (Subject to council approval). A unique opportunity not to be missed.”

Cinema to stay in Rex after unanimous vote

HE Daylesford Cinema will remain in The Rex Arcade after Hepburn Shire councillors voted unanimously in favour of the decision at this month’s council meeting.

Daylesford Community Theatre president Gina Lyons said about 130 people in the gallery clapped and cheered when the votes were cast.

“The unanimous council decision to construct a new cinema upstairs in The Rex Arcade is endorsement of the cinema as a community enterprise highly valued across our shire,” she said.

“What I feel more than anything is relief that, after five years and four landlords, and the uncertainty that goes with changes in ownership, the cinema now has a permanent home. We can get on with the business of showing great movies and expanding the entertainment offering with the use of our state of the art technology.”

The cinema will also not have to move into a temporary space – it will remain with business as usual while the new cinema is being constructed and the move into its new home.

Ms Lyons said the cinema would have 70 to 80 seats and retain its projector and sound equipment, retractable screen, lighting, hearing loop and point of sale equipment - most of which were paid for by community fundraising.

The cinema will have a 10 x 10-year license with rent at the current $36,000 per year rising with CPI. Other groups will also be able to book the cinema when it is not being used to show films.

“We have a magnificent community, people who are prepared to stand up for what is important to them…it has been inspiring. In the end, the CEO and councillors listened and an option was proposed which met the needs of the cinema and the council,” Ms Lyons said.

Birch Ward’s Cr Kate Redwood, who spoke passionately at the council meeting, said she was very proud of the community.

“The campaign from the community to see the cinema continue to operate from the Rex has brought so many people together in a way that is so positive. The unanimous vote from the council to keep the cinema in the Rex delivers a win for the Daylesford community, a win for the council in breathing life back into the Rex, and a win for local democracy.

“As we all know the cinema is very special and means so much to so many cinema goers, volunteers, behind the scenes committee – to kids, to families, to older folk, to visitors to the town, to people beyond Daylesford who love the movies but find it too far to go to Ballarat or Castlemaine.

“It engages people in a way that nothing else I can think of does. I also want to say: well done Aaron (Hepburn Shire Council chief executive officer Aaron van Egmond). He took the front role in working with the cinema committee and with councillors to find a way forward that meant that the Rex could deliver all the functions that council wanted as well as keeping the cinema. It is a truly wonderful outcome.”

Us Two - Anne Marie and Graham

A

NNE Marie Banting and Graeme Bamford were housemates when they bought the Daylesford Hotel in 2013. It was a five-year plan and now, in their fifth year, they have put the “old girl” up for sale. It’s been “a rocky ride” including a massive four-week renovation, a heart attack and plenty of hard work. But it’s also been an adventure. Anne Marie and Graham spoke to Donna Kelly.

I’m a Western Australian girl, born and bred, and my last business in Western Australia was a wine bar called Must. My background there was as a sommelier and I won Gourmet Traveller Sommelier of the Year in 2003. After leaving Must I moved to Melbourne and was a sommelier at the Taxi Dining Room and then Punch Lane (Wine Bar & Restaurant) – and then I moved to Daylesford.

At the time my ex-partner and I had a little boy, Jackson, and we felt this was the right place to bring him up. It is very inclusive and no-one was going to think he had two heads because he had two mums. Also, after those big shifts at Taxi I would come up here and my shoulders would fall, I would breathe and I would feel rejuvenated.

When my partner and I split up I needed a place to stay. Graham was my friend and when I walked through the door I burst into tears and he caught me. We lived together for five and a half years before I met Rosie Hebel.

In that early time, we got to know each other really well. We shared dinners and conversations and glasses of wine. We are very similar in our ways, in terms of the way we had been brought up, how we have grown up and we have a lot of commonalities. He has two sisters so he gets women.

Graham brought up that he had always loved the pub. I was working at Lake House then, treading water, and Graham was going down to Melbourne working at William Angliss (Institute) four days a week - leaving before the sun came up and coming back in the dark. He said “I love the pub” and I said “Why don’t we do this?”.

We bought it in February 2013, closed it for a month and did a big renovation.

Kim Clifford was very helpful with that and she and Graham ran around decorating while I worked on the booze and food and staff.

And then in April, right at the start, I had a heart attack. I was in the pub and I went upstairs to Graham who was in the office and said I didn’t feel well and was going to lie down in the apartment. I came back five minutes later and said it wasn’t right and his sister, who was staying with us, took me to hospital and Graham ran the ship without me for four weeks. It was just my age and the pressure, that’s what it was put down to. But it was a bit scary and Graham was a big support through that.

We have become known as Mr and Mrs B. People often think husband and wife publicans, and of course we are not, but we love each other and support each other and I feed him regularly. We have never had a fight, never had a cross word.

But now it is time to move on. Graham now wants to retire and our silent partners, Julie and Sue, have retired. We have always thought you should sell a business when you are at your peak, when it’s shiny and bright. And there's plenty of life in the old girl yet!

It is always exciting. It’s been a big adventure and we are still smiling. Graham had dinner with me last night at my house – that’s a testament to our friendship.

I studied French patisseries and got into ice-cream making. I had a business in Sydney, La Glasserie, for three years which was very successful. It’s not there anymore.

I like Melbourne more than Sydney. Melbourne is my home and the Victorian lifestyle works for me. I had the Galleon Café in St Kilda for 17 years and loved that.

When I sold, my business partner went to Warburton and I came to Daylesford.

I bought up here a year or so later, about 2005. Then I commuted to Melbourne for a long time working at William Angliss. Anne Marie and I were sharing a house together and we started talking about this place (Daylesford Hotel) thinking about what a great building it is and wouldn’t it be fun to have a pub in town.

I just like creating things, the ice-cream business, the café…creating the hotel was a lot of work but also a lot of fun. Anne Marie was “You do it, the look” and that was great for me because I love doing this stuff. I really enjoyed putting all this together.

And we had fantastic tradies in the area – in four weeks and two days we renovated it all, took over on February 2, opened on March 4 and then we had our first ChillOut. We had only had the pub a month or so when Anne Marie had the heart attack but these things happen. What do you do? You just keep going. We also had a good team around us and we have some great people who stepped up as well. But it’s not your average start to a new business – you just keep dancing really fast.

I met Anne Marie through mutual friends and she was looking for somewhere to live and I had a couple of spare bedrooms and was looking for someone to live there and we just started house-sharing and became friends.

We have a lot in common. She likes European food and wines and that was my kind of background as well. We have very similar values in lots of ways. I admire Anne Marie a lot, she has extraordinary wine and food knowledge and can tell you the recipe of a dish she ate on the street in Penang five years ago, or from a restaurant in Paris. We both like to live life to the full and are a bit adventurous. We both feed off each other.

For me, Mr and Mrs B started when we were at the Good Guys in Ballarat and Anne Marie was buying a vacuum cleaner and the guy said “Mr Banting, would you like to carry the vacuum cleaner?”. Sometimes we tell people we are not (together) and other times I let it go through to the keeper.

It’s been on the market for a few weeks. I think we always had a five-year plan and Graham I grew up in Eltham and I got into hospitality as a dishwasher in a little restaurant we’ve done four, but it’s a pub so will probably take five to sell. It’s nice, I still really enjoy it and I get a lot of pleasure out of this and satisfaction from what we have in Hurstbridge. Then I trained as a welfare worker and worked with kids and old people. I did it for a few years. I worked with kids with intellectual disabilities, which achieved. I love watching it all buzzy!

But I am getting older and would like some more down time. It’s been a great is what I trained in, and then I worked in psychogeriatric care at Willsmere in Kew. I project but I would like to move on and do something else. I am not sure what that is really enjoyed that. And then I met someone French and went to France. yet so I will semi-retire and enjoy living in Daylesford.

We really heart our locals.

So we now have $20 meal nights Monday-Thursday from 5pm.

Just sayin’...

Pick me, pick me...

EN, ten, ten! I was only 11 but like many I still remember those numbers ringing out as tiny Nadia Comăneci became the first gymnast in Olympic history to be awarded the perfect score of 10 at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.

And at the recent Hepburn Shire Council meeting it could have rung out again as the council proved its flexibility and made a magnificent backflip to allow the Daylesford Cinema to remain in The Rex Arcade.

The gallery went wild with clapping and cheering, as opposed to the usual moans and groans, as all seven councillors voted "yes" to chief executive officer Aaron van Egmond's report's recommendation.

Supporters had been hoping for at least four votes to get it over the line. Birch Ward councillors Kate Redwood and Fiona Robson had long pledged their support but no-one quite knew who else they could rely on. In the end, all seven councillors voted in the affirmative.

It's a real win for people power, for a volunteer committee that worked tirelessly in front and behind the scenes - and a real win for council because their only role is to stand up for their ratepayers - and they did that.

It's also a win for The Rex Arcade. It's been a white elephant, or maybe a black elephant, for too long and with the library and cinema at the fore it will become, once again, a vibrant place for the community to come together. Congrats to all involved. And I promise no more columns on the issue!

So, what to fill up the final bit of white space with here?

I know. Someone offered us a dog recently. A beautiful dog and we brought it out to Glenlyon and road tested it in our yard. Hmm, we thought. Is it time? But the next day we both had reservations - mine emotional, Kyle's more commitment-phobic - is that a word?

I know it's not possible but I still want Rosie and Curly to be waiting when we get home and come bounding down the path ready for action. Kyle, after 16 years with our fur-babies, wants to be able to have a night away and then say "what the heck, let's stay for another night" without any phone calls.

So, still not quite the right time for us. But this beautiful three-year-old dog is still looking for its forever home. You need good fences, like any responsible dog owner - after all you don't want to be named and shamed on Facebook, and the ability to care for it - that's love and money.

So, if you are keen for a new family member that's a bit of collie and a bit of kelpie, and we are talking an inside dog here, just let me know and I will put you in touch with the current carer. Not just sayin'...just hoping.

St Michael's off to a great new start for 2017

T

HERE’S a real buzz at St Michael’s Primary School in Daylesford. A feeling of newness.

That’s thanks in part to new principal Ethan Corfee, pictured, who started this year, but also has a bit to do with other new staff and work to refurbish the existing school building.

Talking to Ethan you can hear the enthusiasm in his voice for his new role and new school. He grew up in Melbourne and has spent the past seven years working at Ballarat schools but jumped at the chance to lead a new team at St Michael’s.

“There are so many reasons I wanted to come here. From the beauty of Daylesford to the size of the school, to the people I knew here already, to the opportunity for growth…all of those things but certainly the opportunity for growth was something that really stood out for me. The one thing I could really see was so much excitement and potential to build something really special here.

“And I have loved every minute, as I drive into Daylesford every single morning, I look down the street to see the Convent (Gallery) and the houses on the hill. It’s a view that’s hard to beat and a wonderful way to start the day.

“I also love the layout of the community, it’s physically a very close knit community and at St Michael’s the people have been amazing in their welcome of me, which has been wonderful. The kids, the smiling faces, parents like-wise, the staff. There is a real sense of optimism this year – I think we are all aware of the beginning of something pretty special on our journey going forward. It is certainly a great privilege to be in my role.”

Ethan said with new staff members now on board there was "a new staff team in effect”. “That is exciting because we have a mix of experienced teachers and more youthful teachers, just a diverse experience in terms of learning and teaching.

"We also have, in terms of our physical environment, our new building project which, in its first stage, will include the refurbishment of half of the existing building which will see the administration and reception areas placed at the front of the building. There will also be lots of new facilities including meeting rooms, new learning areas and staff work spaces which will be terrific and bring a more contemporary and innovative feel to St Michaels.

“I respect the tradition of the past and the work of previous principals, staff and families but looking forward is my aim and focusing on how the physical environment and learning and teaching equips our kids to be life-long learners and author their own futures.”

St Michael’s is keen to get out into the community and invite the community into the school – learning from community members and taking advantage of the people and places on offer. Already Year 5 and 6 students have visited the Convent Gallery, the historic forerunner to St Michael’s and looked at not only its history but also visual art, paintings and sculptures.

And Year 2 students will soon be walking the streets of Daylesford as part of their health and wellbeing studies looking at different places people can access for their wellbeing whether that is physically, mentally or spiritually.

“For us to be able to tell our story is also crucial and we want to do that in as many different ways as possible. And we are so excited about the possibilities of where we can go. We have a lot to offer and we want to build numbers at the school and really make it a priority for learning and teaching in this region.”

AULINE Hanson, vaccination isn't a choice: it's a lifesaver.

4073. 2808. 1013. These aren't just numbers. They are the number of deaths from diphtheria, pertussis and polio at the height of their outbreak in Australia.

One of the most naive things I hear from people talking about vaccination is that because there aren't current outbreaks of diseases that were commonplace 100 years ago, their kids will be safe. Let me make this clear – that attitude is not only complete and utter rubbish, it completely threatens the ongoing success of our vaccination program.

Don't take it for granted that our kids aren't dying from diphtheria – consider us lucky. It is wholly and solely because of our effective immunisation program that we have managed to eradicate these diseases.

Professor Clem Boughton was once a senior physician at the Division of Infectious Diseases at Prince Henry Hospital, Sydney. In other words, he was at the frontline of treating these diseases. He hits the nail on the head when he talks about the reason complacency is creeping up on vaccines: "As a result of the effectiveness of immunisation programs, most young parents have not seen any of these conditions once so common in the community, and do not realise how dangerous they are."

The result of such complacency? According to official statistics there were cases of 340 measles in 2014 – almost double the 158 measles in 2013.

So, when I hear leaders – such as Pauline Hanson – questioning the validity of vaccines, anger doesn't even come close. There will always be misinformed opinions, with proponents clustering together in hidden Facebook groups sharing discredited research. But it is completely unacceptable for a politician to use their public platform to put a shadow of a doubt in one person's mind about something as critical as vaccination.

Vaccination isn't just about protecting personal health – it's a social responsibility. Herd immunity is critical to protecting Australians who simply can't be immunised for medical reasons.

The government has put in place measures linking vaccination with family payments – something Labor has always offered bi-partisan support on, with a view to increasing immunisation rates across Australia. While I am encouraged to hear the Prime Minister's ongoing support for these measures, I think the government must go further and call out One Nation's comments for what they are – a danger to public health.

The reason most of us can't fathom the devastation that diseases such as rubella, measles, diphtheria and polio cause is because of our successful immunisation program.

Parents, if your children are vaccinated, take comfort in knowing you have gifted them protection against these diseases. And if you have voluntarily opted not to have your children vaccinated, then please look at the shocking evidence carefully.

DON'T think anyone can overestimate the amazing work done by carers across Western Victoria. I’m continually amazed and inspired by the dedication and love given by our local carers.

I’m therefore really pleased that a consultation process has commenced for the State Government’s Carer Statement, which will outline how we can best support and recognise carers.

Carers play an invaluable role in our community and it is important that their voice is heard. There are more than 773,000 Victorians who give their time, effort and love into caring for a family member or friend who needs them.

They don’t fit any particular demographic – they can be old or young, men or women, and many may not identify as a carer. The OECD estimates the cost of replacing carers in Victoria would be more than $15 billion annually.

To develop the statement, Carers Victoria will gather the views of people responsible for providing support and what impact there is on the lives of those who care for others. Carers Victoria will be hosting a number of consultations for carers and organisations that support carers in Bendigo, Ballarat and Horsham, to find out what works best in existing services and supports and what could be improved.

Carers can also have their say by completing an online or paper survey at www. carersvictoria.org.au I urge carers across Western Victoria to have their say.

Always thought upstairs was a more appropriate location for the cinema. The feng shui-thingy of that arcade is horrible.

'I bought a Jeeeppppp!!!!!'

“

I BOUGHT a Jeep!!!” “What colour?” – I hear you say. “Blue!” I shout back across the escarpment.

Well actually, it didn’t go that way at all. I picked up my demo Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport, with its upgraded Renegade top, suspension and 285/70 x R17 mud terrain (Oh my God I am going to need a footstool for the mother-in-law to get in) tyres from Peter Stevens Motorworld in Ballarat.

The bodywork certainly got the juices going, these creatures offer a teenager-like feeling of freedom and that’s before you hit the road. Yes, that’s correct, this demon is a virtual time machine that makes you feel 19 again.

So, while still in the vast shiny renovated showroom, the first thing was to remove the sunroof. These things come standard issue with a soft-top but the Renegade top on this spec’d up weapon is an extra certainly worth considering.

Meanwhile, everything you do on this motor vehicle has an army-like feel about it. The roof with its dogging clamps and huge screws make you imagine that you are getting an army Hummer ready to pop a machine gun out the top, ready for a showdown with the enemy.

Anyway, with the sun on my head, and evidence that even the doors can be removed (but I wasn’t going there) I tied back my hair and took this throaty high-riding V6 demon out on the road. This head-turning critter certainly dug deep in terms of torque and in no time flat I was back in my mountain home “where all the ladies’ names are Joan”. Well, not quite, it was more just the same teenage flashback I was having on my arrival into Daylesford with the on-board sound system blasting out Australian Crawl.

It was Labour Day weekend, with no lack of exciting events going on around the district, from ChillOut in Daylesford to its juxtaposition of the Bullarto Vintage Tractor Pull and I was going to get in amongst it all.

Finally, safe at home I was able to investigate the other on-board cleverness that designers obviously took their time with. The seats inside the Wrangler are just as versatile as the vehicle itself with the fold-and-fumble rear seat delivering exceptional seating and cargo versatility. The front seats have a ratcheting mechanism that can raise the seat almost 50.8mm, giving you the flexibility to find the perfect seating position.

Then it was off for a run through the Wombat for a fish at one of the many stocked dams in the area. Luckily, the fish were biting and the Wrangler could get you close to the action, rambling through the undergrowth as nothing seemed to stop this beast particularly in 4WD low, it just crawls through anything.

On the Sunday, we decided to pop the beast into the ChillOut parade, after all she may be excellent off-road but she is a head-turner on the road.

With our Dorothy mascot set aloft (a special call-out to Maureen Andrew) we set off. Now the parade is certainly no road test, this was just an eye candy test, and the popping blue of the body certainly took the prize home. Then it was off to the Tractor Pull and even the Lost Trades Fair in Kyneton, where, thanks to parking spots near the entrance gates, our vehicle certainly got the old-timers talking. A great weekend was had by all.

In summary while I didn’t get to all the electronic and operational goodies due to time restrictions, the things I loved included the heads-up analogue-looking gauge and controls setup, the handling, particularly offroad, combined with the ability to push you back in your seat when it comes to putting the pedal down on the open road. In terms of massive capability, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport is in a class of its own. The Wrangler digs harder, reaches farther and is more fun than any other vehicle I have the pleasure to write-up, so thumbs up from me. *Demo model still available at time of press for $48,990, comparative model $55,000.

Enduring Powers of Attorney are a crucial part of the estate planning process. When prepared correctly, they allow someone to make decisions for you and manage your affairs on your behalf. It’s not just a form-filling exercise - the law is continually evolving and becoming more complex in an attempt to strike the right balance between protecting the person giving the power of attorney, and ensuring that the document is useful and practical.

Are there different types of Enduring Powers of Attorney?

Yes, there are a number of different types, and also differences from state to state. In Victoria, the two most important and useful types of Enduring Powers of Attorney are:- The Enduring Power of Attorney, and - The Enduring Power of Attorney (Medical Treatment).

What are the key points that I should know about Enduring Powers of Attorney? An Enduring Power of Attorney allows you to appoint a person (who is then called your Attorney) to act on your behalf in relation to your financial matters, or your personal matters, or both. A financial matter is any matter relating to your financial or property affairs (such as buying and selling property for you, accessing your bank accounts to pay your bills, and dealing with Centrelink and the Tax Office). A personal matter means any matter relating to your personal or lifestyle affairs (such as deciding where you should live, and arranging services

like Meals On Wheels and Home Help). Enduring Powers of Attorney are relatively flexible. You can put limits on your Attorney’s power to act for you, and appoint one or more people, together or separately, as your Attorney. You decide when your Attorney can start to make decisions for you. Many people prefer their Attorney to be able to make decisions only after they have lost the ability to make those decisions themselves.

What are the key points that I should know about Enduring Powers of Attorney (Medical Treatment)? An Enduring Power of Attorney (Medical Treatment) allows you to appoint a person (who is then called your Agent) to make decisions for you in relation to your medical treatment if you are unable to make such decisions for yourself. They are relatively inflexible, and you can only appoint one person as your Agent and one back-up.

Your Agent may be required to make decisions such as giving consent to medical and dental treatment, including medication and surgery, and can refuse treatment on your behalf. Your Agent’s authority to act on your behalf will only come into effect in the event that you do not have capacity to make decisions for yourself.

When should I prepare a Power of Attorney? Right now! You should prepare a Power of Attorney while you have the capacity to do so, and not leave it until it is too late.

Trentham Spudfest to become whole-of-village event

HE Great Trentham Spudfest, 10-years old this year, is to expand to become a whole-ofvillage event.

charity event staged to raise money for the Cancer Council literally stopped Trentham’s traffic when local identity Mario Sartori, from the East Trentham Fellowship, sat in the High Street to have his pink-and-blue dyed beard shaved as a fund raiser.

A big crowd gathered quickly, Cathy Main made light work of the shearing of the hair and beard Mario had allowed to grow after he made the pledge to be shorn, and all chipped in when the hat was handed around – including two girls on bicycles who pulled up and offered $50 if Mario would add his eye brows to the hair being shorn.

Which he did.

The whip around and prior pledges raised $2200 for the shearing, which was in association with the Trentham Community Bendigo Bank and its charity program.

Mario was moved to take part in the fund raiser after hearing of a local’s battle with cancer.

The May 6 event will still be centred on its now-traditional location in the Quarry Street Reserve but is also expanding to stage activities in the village square and along High, Market and Victoria streets.

Spudfest convenor Helen Macdonald said organisers noted that town businesses were keen to be more closely connected to the activity.

Simultaneously, out-of-town visitors said last year, via Spudfest’s formal visitor survey, that they’d like to see more of the town during their visit.

“Spudfest is now getting big crowds – more than 6000 last year – and it seems like a win-win to spread the event around town – as long as we can do so without compromising Spudfest’s authenticity as a genuine, smalltown event which is firmly rooted in Trentham’s history and culture,” she said.

Fortunately, there had been a strong response to Spudfest’s call for more volunteers to help out and having a bigger team on board, all people with specific expertise, made it possible to cover all of the detail needed to plan and deliver a bigger Spudfest.

“As they say, many hands make light work,” Helen said.

New exhibitors at Art Show

HE 2000-plus visitors who flock to the Trentham Easter Art & Craft Show each year are likely to see a new-look show following strong interest from new exhibitors.

The show’s organisers are all receiving strong interest from exhibitors who have not previously taken part, said organising committee spokesperson Bette McLaren.

Trentham’s Easter Art & Craft Show is traditionally popular with exhibitors as it gives them a big audience and offers strong sales opportunities.

This, plus additional prize money and a new portrait prize this year, are all helping bring in new names keen to hang alongside longer-term, regular exhibitors, Bette said.

But she warned that time was running out for artists yet to register – the deadline for entry forms is March 31.

As well as being happy with the response so far, the organising committee is also pleased with the prompt and professional Hepburn Shire Council response to managing black mould which was detected in the Trentham Mechanics Institute Hall, the show’s venue, towards the end of summer.

The hall has since successfully staged an international art show from Germany, which used the Trentham Easter Art & Craft Show’s exhibition hanging system, and the venue is in top shape, post-council repairs, to host the more than 200 art and craft works expected to be on show over Easter.

As well as offering a People’s Prize voted for by the public, the show now also offers a new $100 prize for the piece voted as best in show by the volunteers who set up and hang or display the more than 200 pieces exhibited each year.

Public opening of the Trentham Art and Craft Show is the evening of Thursday, April 13 and the exhibition is then open from April 14 to 17.

AM moved to write about the flavour of wellbeing today.

I met my mum down the street, we exchanged on troubling times and injustices, walking away from each other with a sense of sadness yet activism. I grew up as a child of hippies.

We spoke with the voice of reason, went on peace marches and demonstrated publicly about the wrong-doings against humanity, believing in numbers we could make a difference. Together we stand, divided we fall…

People, what has happened to us?

When we consider the degradations of our communities, the darker issues arising and our inability to feel effective in combatting these, what does it mean for the future, for our children?

How can the voice of reason be heard when the powers that be are less reasonable than my cat? At least she knows, that all she wants is a pat and will sit and wait patiently, nudging gently as a reminder of the care she asks for the and the kindness I will give.

We speak of being well. Wellbeing comes in many forms and is a result of many factors. Healthy bodies, healthy minds, healthy communities. The health of any individual is greatly influenced by the health of their environment.

Ask yourself how healthy is my environment and you may come up trumps! Then one may wonder what the hell is a trump anyway? If the current state of world play is anything to go by, trumps no longer hold any value and we all need to reassess our belief systems as it is we who have made the mess we are in.

I am in a fortunate position, as I am across many facets of our local community and I am able to write freely in The Local about issues that affect us directly. Donna and Kyle do not veto my articles or ask me to avoid the real facts, they are willing to showcase inspirational people and give the underdog a break.

Now that is unique and that is part of an environment I want to be in. Where the news is real, where we can speak our truths and where people are respected for who and what they are.

Perhaps the ability to contact wellbeing through a central voice like The Local, in a state of community unrest is something to celebrate. As a community of readers we can enlighten ourselves by listening, really giving attention to what is going on around us.

Our environment can be given a voice, can be worked with, harmonised and will give back in the gifts of support and care – one towards another.

I am only a columnist who has been given a go to speak of wellbeing. I am just like you. So together let's stand for the wellbeing of our community, of our environment, of our families, be united in reason and truth.

Without such an effort, individualistic drivers, divisive actions will decide our fate, and our fall will be inevitable.

Today, let us begin again…

A stand against bullying

E

VEN as adults we are troubled by bullies.

And I am finally making a stand. I used the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence on March 17 to fuel my inspiration.

The National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence, is a nationwide movement in Australian schools, to share anti-bullying policies, messages and programs, promoting awareness to say – Bullying No Way! But what about the adults? There are thousands of adults, who are bullied everyday by someone they know, or bullied online by someone they don’t know.

Adults appreciate there are avenues to gain assistance and options to report it, but many don’t. They’re concerned about repercussions, a slur against their name, retaliations and being disbelieved. Speaking up may also affect future career prospects, or leave a professional brand in tatters.

Then there is the underhanded bullying, which is more challenging to prove.

You see the actions of the bully which are hurtful and deliberate, but you may not feel confident to explain the conniving scenario, or know how to defend against their scheming actions. Especially if they are a supervisor, or popular person in their network. This can be distressing and overwhelming.

So how long do you stay silent regarding these encounters? Especially when you know the person may have no emotional intelligence, and will continue to treat you like this. You know they won’t stop, because they will never change!

There is only one way, and it’s a change in you...it’s having the courage to stand up. I am suggesting to those adults, who are feeling the pain and anxiety of oppression, to stand up to your nemesis, your bully, your tormentor. Gain the confidence to take action and simply ask your bully a question – why?

Is it because they have a difference of opinion? Is it jealousy? Do they struggle with communicating properly to you? Has this gone on for years and they’ve even forgotten why?

Let them respond, but get it out on the table. Speak up, speak out and move forward. Ask a friend, workmate or supervisor, to help you if you can’t do this alone.

But whatever you do – take some action to help yourself get rid of the knot in your stomach, the anxiety you feel, and the pain in your heart.

If you can’t manage being face-to-face with the bully, then take a step in calling one of the help lines - Beyond Blue, Black Dog Institute, Mind Australia, Lifeline, SANE Australia, Mind Health Connect, Relationships Australia or Mental Health in Multicultural Australia.

If this doesn’t suit, make an appointment to see a professional counsellor or GP. If you’ve never done any of these things before, but you’ve often thought about it, be bold. Make the first step, finding the help and wellness you need.

If you know the workplace is not looking after you and you’re too afraid to speak up against the bullies who have ‘friends in high places’, or are throwing their weight around, know that you are protected with relevant laws, and seek extra guidance from your union, the Ombudsman office, Fair Work Commission or the ACCC. At the very least make document files and log these instances for any future legal action. Spread the word, there’s going to be someone else that needs to hear this.

Help them take action and ask their bully - Why? Be brave, stand up and speak out, if the kids can do it...so can we, and know that I’m right with you and I’m proud of you!

St Patrick's Day at East Trentham

erfect Indian summer weather helped draw a huge crowd for this year’s annual St Patrick’s Day procession from the old Catholic church, now converted into a home, in James Lane, East Trentham south down the road to the Pig and Whistle pub.

Dubliner Anton Kennedy, now of Lauriston, kicked off proceedings with a chat on the history of the local church, which dates back to the late 1800s, and on St Patrick, who dates back a good deal further than that.

Mary Walsh then invited the gathering to follow the piper Geoff Jones and the Tylden CFA fire truck, Squirt, back for the pub’s heavily-Guinness flavoured celebrations.

Most of the crowd sported green finery of some sort or other.

The Rant

I

N THE words of Forrest Gump, “I’m not a smart man, but I know love”.

The same could be said for me when I first arrived in this country from the land of the long white cloud almost exactly 23 years ago, on March 11. I was bound for Europe and for adventure on what is known as the “white boats” that’s those dreamy boats the wealthy Russians park up for winter in the south of France.

I had, and still have, my captain’s ticket to drive the things. However, my first stop was Hamilton Island - I thought I could pick up some traveller’s tips on where to go.

Before the days of Google or the internet, when research involved talking to people.

This is where I ran into Donna. She was working there and with no staff accommodation available she had a magnificent apartment on the 18th floor of Hamilton Towers. Pretty flash for a boy from Kiwi Land with the arse hanging out of his pants and two dollars to his name. The romance blossomed, the European trek was over and the education started. Yes, I had run into a fairly well-educated girl, both formally and street smarts. I already had the street-smarts as I had left school at 15, but the formal stuff…I just soaked that stuff up.

Fast track to last year, when I still had a bit to do with the Melbourne luxury boat scene. In fact, last March I took a bunch of the local villagers out on a mate’s 72-footer, complete with six bathrooms, two generators the size of a large car engine and a thousand horsepower of thrust on both of the propellers. We had just pulled back into the dock, when I ran into another kiwi about the same age as me, who had come up in pretty much the same circumstances as me and had immigrated to Australia about the same time as me. The difference was the boat. I was driving a borrowed boat. My kiwi friend had another boat at the end of the dock, in fact it wasn’t a boat, it fell into the superyacht class. This was 110-foot of glamour, with four decks, a full-time captain and more chrome than a factory full of Google workers.

He invited me aboard. I knew this guy from a few years ago when he started his stellar ride into millionaire-ism. Now he had the whole ball of wax. He had the peninsula home, as in he actually owned a peninsula where he had built his palace. The garage alone has not one, but three, late model Rolls Royce sports motor cars parked next to the full-sized sports bar and lounge. Not to mention the rest of the house.

My kiwi companion had done well, but isn’t it funny how the tall poppy syndrome in us all wants to look for indiscretions where we can shoot down these people who, with hard work and tenacity, do well. But no, he was still with his first Australian love that he had meet 23 or so years ago, they had two cute normal kids, and this bloke wasn’t a wanker he was a nice down-to-earth kiwi fella who had done well.

I guess the lesson is that every now and then we should look around our community and if you see someone with a new car or moving into a flasher house than you, simply say “Well done”. Humble rant over…

Daylesford Probus

HE Probus Club of Daylesford held its annual meeting on March 21 which saw the election of the office bearers and committee members.

They are president - Lois Voterakis, senior vice president - Keith Pyers, junior vice president - Anne Bremner, secretary - Robert Oonk, treasurer - Bev Ryan, immediate past president - Ted Goodwin and committee - Halcyon Bell, Dot Bull, Garth Marks and Steve Walker.

Probus is an association for active members of the community and those no longer working full-time to join together in clubs for a new lease of life.

Its basic purpose is to advance intellectual and cultural interest amongst adult persons; to provide regular opportunities to progress healthy minds and active bodies, through social interaction and activities and to enjoy the fellowship of new friends.

The Probus Club of Daylesford meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 10am at the Daylesford Bowling Club.

Wasp and pest control Confluence of the arts

AYLESFORD resident Ronnie Layfield hates European wasps.

Which is a good thing – seeing he runs Daylesford Bee and Wasp Removal.

After 20 years or so in the game, Ronnie said this season was proving to be as bad as he has seen.

And calls from people wanting to get rid of the pests are coming in thick and fast.

“They get stung - and that’s when they ring me.

“They’re landing on people’s food, or when people are just being near their nest, or trying to exterminate the nest, or while people are working in their gardens. I even had nests at my place…they picked on the wrong bloke.

“They’re everywhere and I just try to help where I can. There’d be hundreds of nests around the town at the moment, and I would have already gotten rid of that many.”

Mr Layfield explained that he lays down pieces of fine chicken breast for the wasps to pick up, follows them as they take it back to their nest, then exterminates the nest.

“I don’t want a job, I’d prefer there would be no wasps.”

Symptoms of a wasp sting include burning pain, a raised lump and inflammation, however multiple stings are common because unlike the bee, a wasp does not die after one sting.

Museum Victoria says the European wasp, Vespula germanica, is native to Europe, North Africa and temperate Asia.

"Our Australian records show that the European wasp first reached Tasmania in 1959, where it soon became well established. However, it was not until 1977 that the European wasp was first recorded on the mainland in Melbourne.

"At present, the European wasp distribution appears to be restricted to the cool and wet climates of coastal southern Australia. It occurs throughout most of Victoria and Tasmania."

N A confluence of the arts, 75 Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society Central Victoria members and guests were treated to a pre-opening exhibition of Pacific Island and Australian Aboriginal artworks at the CopeWilliams Winery and Gallery in Romsey.

The opening was followed by a talk that embraced the Weird and Whacky World of South Arabian Architecture.

The talk, by UK Middle East expert Chris Bradley, followed the path of the scent traders though Yemen from Sana’a to the Red Sea, past the UNESCO heritage site of Shibam, with its precarious mud-brick buildings and on to the ancient site of the Temple of the Moon God, used during the reign of the Queen of Sheba.

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in neighbouring Muscat is a demonstration of fading oil wealth today, but Chris’s talk highlighted earlier treasures of fine arts and architecture, which today’s war in Yemen prevents anyone exploring.

On Thursday, April 6, Sylvia Sagona, the society’s first ADFAS CV lecturer will return to Kyneton Town Hall with another French-themed talk.

Sylvia is an internationally recognised specialist on 19th century French art, literature and society. She leads cultural tours to France, Italy and Spain and lectures to learned societies, galleries and museums.

Sylvia will speak on the Divine Marquise who rose from obscurity to become Louis XV’s mistress, sole confidante and power behind the throne. She cleverly maintained her power over the king in her role as arbiter of taste.

She masterminded the porcelain Manufacture de Sevres and oversaw its designs that subtly celebrated her intelligence and beauty throughout Europe.

Fluctuating spaces

EAR 7 and 10 students at Daylesford Secondary College are taking part in an innovative art project titled Fluctuating Spaces.

The project, funded by Creative Victoria, will see Mollongghip artist Jodie Goldring visit the school throughout Term 2 as an artist-in-residence.

The project will see the creation of collaborative art installations exploring the concepts of flux and change.

The main focus is to “transform three-dimensional spaces using sculpture and installation from non-spaces or un-noticed spaces to engaging and vibrant spaces”.

A secondary focus is transforming recycled materials from discarded rubbish to precious objects. The project also brings together the arts, English and science faculties.

The project will also see the students interacting with the community including Hepburn Wind and Words in Winter.

Jodie said Year 7 and 10 students would work together – helping Year 7 students in their transition to high school.

“The flux and change is about relationships, the relationships of the kids to each other, to the school and to the wider community.”

Jodie said the community would be invited to the school in June to see the installations and join the students in celebrating their achievements.

Koalas at Clunes

HE Odd Koala, an exhibition by Michael J. Ryan, will be held at The Warehouse - Clunes, Esmond Gallery from April 1 to April 26.

The opening will be held on April 1 from noon to 3pm.

Michael completed a diploma in Fine Art at Chisholm/Monash University.

He says his work is a record "of what I can’t see but feel".

"I try to paint the emotion of the place. The rock series is about going to wonderful places and experiencing amazing things.

"The koalas are a bit trickier. They just appeared one day in the studio and keep coming out. I guess they are expressive portraits from the study of the self. I think art is that, a study of the self."

Bell founder speaker

D

R ANTON Hasell’s speciality is as a bell founder, something which has taken him round the world and caused him to be commissioned to create the beautiful Federation Bells at Birrarung Marr on the banks of the Yarra.

The germination of all of his ideas takes place locally on his property in the small town of Mia Mia where he brings together his knowledge of science, technology and ancient art.

It all began while studying sculpture at RMIT where he became interested in bronze casting. That led to part time work at a traditional sculpture foundry, which led to setting up his own foundry and gradually recognising that a lot of work was shaping up bell-like.

He started adding clappers and enrolled in a PhD Thesis program to learn more about computerised sound systems for the bells.

Anton recently demonstrated his art at the Lost Trades Fair at Kyneton.

Although his artistic practice is broad, encompassing sculpture and printmaking innovations, bells continue to fascinate him and he is currently working on the creation of 10 musical bells for the Long Now 10,000 year clock in the U.S. Hear more about his fascination at his Art-full Conversation with Jill Rivers at Casa Allegra in Trentham on the afternoon of Sunday, April 9.

Angie and the Doc together in close harmony

D

OC Henry played in a rock band in his late teens and early 20s then gave playing music away for many years. He always maintained an interest in music and had quite eclectic tastes, particularly in experimental music. When he moved to the Chewton bushlands in Central Victoria he was drawn to old timey and bluegrass music and feels a connection with the music from the Appalachian mountains, drawing upon similarities in the landscape.

Angie Mitten grew up singing and dancing and taught herself guitar in her early 20s. She dabbled around in the folk scene and community choirs for some years until parenting, studying and relationships drew her attention elsewhere. When she moved to Chewton she became involved in facilitating a community gospel choir and community singing events. Angie took up playing clarinet in her thirties and played in a community group called the KGB (Klezmer, Gypsy, Balkan). Together they are Angie and the Doc. Angie chatted with Donna Kelly.

Donna: When did you know you were musos?

Angie: It’s not an identity either of us has jumped on too readily. People would ask me if I was a muso and I would skirt around the issue despite being a music teacher, playing a number of instruments, being able to read music and lead choirs. It’s more like other people began to identify us as musos. The word seemed to be loaded with expectation, something about being good enough to claim the word, but eventually It came to a point where I thought “well, I guess I am”.

Donna: How would you describe your music?

Angie: Our music is built around our close harmony singing and wherever we play people comment on how well our voices blend. Doc Henry plays a finger-picking guitar style on a hand-built parlour guitar made in the 1950s. It has a very distinctive sound that Doc describes as “agricultural” which suits our style of music. Shortly after Angie and the Doc started singing together Doc suggested I give the acoustic bass guitar a try. He happened to have a bass that hadn’t been played in years. Well, Doc was so impressed how I just took to the bass so quickly that he ended up giving it to me for Christmas and it has now become an important part of our sound.

Donna: What do you hope your music means to others?

Angie: We hope people, of course, enjoy our music and perhaps can be transported to another time and place. When we’re singing our gospel songs we hope people receive them in the spirit they are intended, and recognise that they are a huge part of bluegrass music.

Donna: What does your music mean to you?

Angie: I love collaborating on musical projects, and love learning and developing new skills. It is not every day you meet someone who you gel with musically so that feels pretty special. When we really nail a song, get the harmony right, lock in musically….it’s magic.

Donna: Do you think there is a good music scene in the Central Highlands?

Angie: There’s an extremely vibrant and diverse music scene in the Central Highlands region. It’s important that people get out and support live music in venues so the music scene continues to thrive.

Donna: Where can we hear you next?

Angie: We’ll be playing at Horvat’s Supper Club in Daylesford on April 6 from 7pm.

Donna: And finally, what is your Central Highlands story?

Angie: I moved to Chewton in 2003 and Doc Henry moved to Chewton Bushlands in 2006. We didn’t meet until September, 2015 when a mutual friend had organised an acoustic afternoon fundraiser at the Chewton Anglican Church. We were both on the bill and we both saw the potential in a collaboration. It turns out we had heaps of mutual friends and had only been living 5km apart all these years. We even had adjoining post office boxes!

Electric bikes getting people On The Moove

I

T’S the latest way to get around Daylesford and surrounds – electric powered bicycles.

On The Moove is the brainchild of Greg Thompson, pictured, and Mark Rak and came about after they tried two years ago to introduce segways into the region.

“We struggled to get approval so we shelved that idea and then decided to bring back electric bicycles,” Greg said.

“We had both experienced these bikes overseas and thought with all the hills here, it would be a great idea.”

Greg said both he and Mark had given the bikes a good trial and had even been up the hill of Central Springs Road, from East Street, with no problems “and we are both big boys”.

The bikes can reach a top speed of about 60km/h but most people stayed with a cruisier 30km/h on the flat.

“It’s all about getting people out and about around Daylesford and we have maps to events like this weekend’s Fine Food and Wine Fayre at Glenlyon. It’s about a 40-minute ride out there,” Greg said.

Greg said the bikes were very sturdy European models with German electric systems. “It’s good technology, they are easy to use and have robust tyres which means you can ride on the bitumen or the gravel roads. There are power, sport or touring modes – or off if you want more exercise.”

The batteries last for about 100km and those who want to keep them overnight are given a recharging unit.

“We have already had a lot of interest with lots of bookings, also through our accommodation business, Daylesford Cottage Directory. Locals are also coming in just to experience what the bikes are like.”

Riding review

A

T THE insistence of Greg Thompson, the co-owner of On The Moove e-bike hire, I took the electric-assisted treadly for a romp. Comfortable with my safety briefing I was off, uphill and down dale as I flew through the streets.

This bike is amazing no matter if you want to go slow, or what I reckon was 70km/h, this bike handled it all.

It’s best described as like being on a tandem pushbike without the grumpy wife, you can put as much or as little effort in as you like, and it’s a perfect fit for our hilly environment.

So do yourself a favour and give it a go.

NDERSON’S Mill at Smeaton is one of Victoria’s outstanding monuments to its pioneering past.

The property consists of a five-storey bluestone building, an 8.5-metre diameter waterwheel, a tall brick chimney and a variety of outbuildings including a bluestone office, stables, granary, blacksmith’s shop and a family residence.

In 1861, with money generated from the Victorian goldfields to meet demands from the booming goldfields towns for food, the Anderson brothers built Anderson's Mill to tap into the local agricultural and population boom.

The whole complex represents the entrepreneurial skill, enterprise and sheer hard work of early settlers.

The building was designed by John Anderson, who trained as a millwright in Scotland. The height of the building reflected the need to use gravity in the milling process and the siting to utilize the water from Birch Creek.

The Anderson family owned and operated the mill for almost 100 years, through boom times, depression and war.

The mill is listed on the Historic Buildings Register, the National Estate Register of the Australian Heritage Commission and is also classified by the National Trust.

The historic five-storey bluestone mill situated in Smeaton will again be the venue for the Anderson’s Mill Festival on Sunday, April 2. The festival has been held for the past 21 years.

The Andersons Mill Festival is a showcase for the local produce, boutique wineries and entertaining music, arts and crafts and heritage of the region, a fabulous day of entertainment.

Try, taste and buy some of the best food available in the region. Delicious spicy Italian bullboar sausages, organic vegie burgers, beef rolls with exquisite home-made relishes and sauces, and much more.

Sample wines from some of the best boutique wineries in Victoria. Enjoy handcrafted whites, reds and sparkling wines from cool climate vineyards in the local area.

Stalls will offer high quality goods while wood-turning, blacksmithing, cricket bat making, wooden spoon making, spinning and weaving, sheep shearing and working horse displays are also a feature of this year's festival.

Again this year the mill and festival will provide a backdrop to an entertaining and relaxing day, an atmosphere that is enjoyed by kids, adults and mums and dads.

Smoked trout and potato salad

F YOU have the potatoes cooked the evening before this is a very quick dish to put together.

750g new small potatoes 2 x 385g (approximately) whole smoked trout 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 teaspoon sugar – raw is good 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 small red onion, sliced thinly 2 spring onions, sliced thinly 2 tablespoons drained capers, rinsed 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh dill Whole iceberg or Cos lettuce leaves for serving Boiled eggs – see note below

Boil or steam potato until just tender, halve, cool, toss in heated oiled pan until lightly brown on all sides.

Prepare fish by carefully discarding skin and bones. Flake flesh into a large bowl being sure all bones have been removed.

Place juice, sugar, oil and mustard in a screw-topped jar and shake well.

Add potato, onions, capers and dill to bowl with trout and pour over dressing – mix gently to distribute. You may add halved hard-boiled eggs to increase the salad's volume.

To serve, place lettuce leaves on plates, pile over salad. This quantity will serve six – but this will depend upon the size of the trout you purchase. Offer interesting bread with this – olive or pumpkin are good. Plus a good local white!

Seasonal fare on offer at The Farmers Arms

Kyle's usual go-to at any pub is the steak - and he T'S Friday lunch - so where better to head than has enjoyed both the eye fillet and the porterhouse many the Farmers Arms in Daylesford.

A new menu has just gone up on the blackboards - with Autumn playing a feature role.

Of course, all your favourites are still there - Beer Battered Gummy Shark with chips, salad and house mayo ($25), Prawn Linguine with chilli, garlic, lemon and rocket ($30) or the Eye Fillet Mignon with mash, garlic spinach, snow peas and red wine jus ($42).

But there are some terrific newbies on the board which is what we decide to taste-test.

First up though is a glass of Amherst Chardonnay ($10.50) and a beer for Kyle and a chat with owner Mitch and manager Mel. They say, the idea from now is that the boards will change every three months with as much local produce used as possible. There are also plenty of "light meal" options for under the $25 mark - handy for a quick lunch out or when you just don't want to go overboard.

But today, he's also going for one of the new dishes - the Salmon Fillet on top of blistered cherry tomatoes, green beans, roasted beetroot and herbed chat potatoes topped with salsa verde ($36).

It's another winner. The skin on the fish is nice and crispy and under that it's perfectly cooked - still nice and pink. The flavours and textures of the tomatoes, beans, beetroot and spuds work well together, and the salsa offers that piquant touch. Another new favourite.

Desserts

Now we aren't big on dessert but, as you know, we need something for the photos. Well, that's my story and I am sticking to it.

Anyway, I was quite keen on a cheese plate, there are some seriously good cheeses on offer here, but we decided the Creme Caramel with seasonal poached fruit ($16) would make for a better photo.

Mel suggested a Tasting Plate Crumble with vanilla ice-cream and a little jug of with taramasalata, marinated Mt Zero olives, feta, pork pouring cream ($16). A hylotelephium by any other name Commonly known as showy stonecrop or by its family name sedum, this beautiful free-flowering plant, pictured above right, belongs to that almost bulletproof, drought resistant group of thick-leaved plants that have graced almost every outback garden and generations of grannies' window sills - the ubiquitous tribe of plants commonly called succulents.

Closely related to the cabbage-leafed echeverias and crassula or jade plant, sedum spectabile produces large showy heads of flowers in late summer, almost until winter.

Colours range from white through pinks and mauves, and almost red.

They are easily grown from seed or from cuttings, so freely that a stray branch can often fall to the ground and take root on its own. They grow quite cheerfully in shallow pots, or massed in a garden bed, even indoors if there is enough regular natural light.

If you want to see them at their best take a look at the display near the Wombat Hill Gardens Conservatory before the cold weather really sets in.

And, in case you're wondering, no, mine came from my family's nursery in Adelaide.

Lavenders enjoy a good haircut Hi Glen, whenever we pass our local lavender farm around this time of year, I always admire the neat rows of round grey balls left after harvesting. So lavender can obviously withstand regular heavy pruning. My plants are unkempt and unpruned, except when I cut a few random heads for indoors. Is it too late for me to start civilising them now? What is the best way to preserve the flowers for potpourri etc?

- Donna, Newstead Hi Donna of Newstead, Lavender is among the hardiest of garden plants and, coming from the Mediterranean region, thrive in our climate and soil. With its highly aromatic foliage and oil-bearing flowering heads, lavender has been valued since the earliest hunter gatherers discovered its many useful properties.

Apart from bringing perfume into the home, and repelling moths and other insects in your wardrobe, lavender oil helps soothe bites and itches and the dried blooms can add a piquant touch to biscuits, cakes and scones, and even, so I have been told - ice cream!

Lavender oil is present on the surface of the flower heads at all times, as can be seen in the photograph below right, and is extracted by simple distillation.

In the orchard, lavender can be grown to attract bees as an aid to pollination and I recently discovered, in answer to a recent request for help, that a hedge of them will deter rose-loving deer.

In answer to your pruning question, you would normally cut them right back to the base of the flower stems, however, as your plants haven't been pruned for some years, if at all, it would be advisable to prune right back beyond the flower stems. to bring them back into a neat shape.

Be careful though to leave at least several centimetres of green growth on each main stem.

They seldom make new growth from very hard wood.

To dry the flowers, tie the heads in a bunch and hang them up to dry in a cool dry place, like the garage or porch, until they’re fully dry. Then you can either put the whole bunch into a vase for decoration, or rub the little flower bobbles off the stems and into a bowl or place it into small cloth bags to hang in your wardrobes to smell fresh and deter the moths.

I'll leave the recipes to your imagination and experimentation.

Tom Howard receives second life membership

T’S not every day that a woodchop is held at an aged care home but members of the Midland Axemen’s Club did just that at Lumeah Lodge in Daylesford.

Member and senior axeman Harold Suckling said the group decided to hold the woodchop for former member and life member Tom Howard, who moved to the lodge from Korweinguboora last year.

“We presented Tom with another life membership and then held the woodchop.

I was only going to have a couple of axemen but they wanted action – not just to sit around – so I found a few more.

“The residents reckoned it was great and we could hear all the clapping and cheering. They would have had us back the next day if we had the energy.”

Harold, who was the MC, said the day was so successful that it may be held again later this year.

“I have been to plenty of woodchops and I reckon this was one of the best. They said an axeman never does anything for free – but they all did this one.”

Axemen included Don Hansford, Bobby Price, Gary Suckling, Jarrod Adams and Alan Pearce.

Trentham charges to premiership

RENTHAM Bowling Club’s Division 2 Midweek Pennant team recently brought the club’s season to a highly successful conclusion after defeating arch rivals Kyneton in an absorbing grand final at Lancefield.

Playing in front of a large crowd, which included many vocal Trentham supporters, the team won 53 to 31 and were wonderfully led by skips Max Hinneberg and Rodney Justice. Both these players demonstrated the benefit of their years of experience during the course of the game and were highly influential in guiding their rinks to victory.

After overcoming some early setbacks (losing 10 shots in two ends) all team members played well and contributed in their own unique ways to the success of the team. The group had been together for most of the season and their close bond enabled them to fight back to achieve this stunning victory.

Although this team was the only one within the club to play in the finals, Trentham has nevertheless had a particularly satisfying season.

Our Saturday Division 1 team finished sixth and just one game outside the four after having been promoted from Division 2 last year, the Saturday Division 3 team finished fifth and was in finals contention right up until the last game of the season, and the Midweek Division 3 team also finished just outside the four.

Trentham is a small club with a desire to become stronger and to taste more success in the years ahead.

ITH the Labour Day clashing with our March shoot numbers were going to be down but with a few locals and a couple of first timers we had a good number turn out.

Jake set a different layout and all seemed to enjoy it. “Red Dog” came and set the remotes for us before heading to the salty dam, thanks Jody. No AA shooters attended so scores were down a bit, but it was a fairly tough course with the pads moved three times.

Some food for thought from a true foodie

YLVIA Johnson wants to give Trentham locals some food for thought.

And she’s already well on her way, having hosted a small luncheon at her home to say thank-you to all those who made her and husband Michael so welcome when they made the move to the town.

“It came about because our daughter moved here with her husband and their children, and she kept saying that we should come…and we did,” Sylvia explained.

The lunch was quite an event itself – the Johnsons used to own an award-winning restaurant in the Dandenongs, and Sylvia was director of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival for many years.

It’s a combination of her love for food and wine, and the experiences that go with it, that saw the idea form in Sylvia’s mind of having a Food for Thought group start up – local people gathering to meet new people and share stories, with a theme topic for each event.

“I think sharing a table, and sharing stories through food and wine, it’s been there forever. It's part of our culture – we always converse across a table, people meet across tables. And I think to be able to grow that idea here, that’s something I’d like to do.”

Sylvia thinks that the idea could also benefit those moving to town.

“Not everyone can rock up to a community house and say ‘Hi, I’m new to the area, hello.’ So if we put some food on the table, put some wine on the table, and share some stories, why don’t we do it?

“If I get the word out, and people are interested, they might like to give me a ring and really get something like this going and there’s no reason it couldn’t happen in other towns, we could grow this fabulous little movement. It’s a great way to chat and talk, and it has been for hundreds of years. Big tables with happy people.”

But is the couple tempted to have a finger back in the pie when it comes to starting a local eatery?

“My mind says I’d love to, but my body says ‘just don’t go there'.”
