The initiative, by Peter Olver, started last year and has raised thousands of dollars for the Daylesford & District Hospital along with many other sporting organisations and charities.

Cars & Coffee at the Lake began at Lake Daylesford but soon proved too popular and was moved to Jubilee Lake where more space was available.

As cars and owners flocked to the lake a move to Victoria Park was mooted but came undone with Mr Olver only saying Hepburn Shire Council "did not see the direction Cars & Coffee was taking".

The event was abandoned earlier this year by Mr Olver with the Vincent Street rally more of a "casual invite" to owners to show off their vehicles.

Among those who found a prime parking spot was Verey's Funeral Directors co-owner Andrew Nuske, pictured above, with his 56 Chevrolet.

Painting bringing colour, freedom and joy

Donna: Why painting?

ICHAEL Ryan’s mother thought it was a good idea to put him into Michael: In university I majored in painting but sub-majored in printing and a local oil painting class at age 13 and he loved it. But secondary school was rough and Michael spent most lunch times either in the sculpture but painting to me was alive. The colour, the freedom, the joy of creating something no-one has done before just appealed to me. I paint a lot of houses now art rooms or the woodwork department. He talked to Donna Kelly.

Donna: Tell us a little about your background.

Michael: In year 10 I chose to do an art and design course at Dandenong TAFE for years 11 and 12, which was an eye-opening experience. I then got to go to Chisholm/Monash University and completed a diploma in Fine Art. I showed here and there which peaked in the early 90s when I was showing in major galleries, artist-run galleries, the art fair and living in an art space called the Biscuit Factory.

A bit after this, painting/art came to be secondary in my life. I developed a display business which grew into public and commercial art. Started a family and I guess had other priorities. Then over a couple of weeks I painted a few houses that had great studios, scored a bunch of great stretchers on the Grapevine and met (read accosted) Stuart Purves in the Coles car park. I had to start showing again. Then in a year I had paintings in and sold at the Little Gallery Xmas Show in Trentham, then a couple in the Swiss Italian Festa Landscape Art Prize, then 50 new works for a solo exhibitionat the Newstead Railway Arts Hub. Unlike before, I have the 'net now and am getting some great feedback and leads nationally and internationally. A lot has changed from the 90s.

Donna: What do you paint?

Michael: Mostly landscapes though lately the odd koala portrait has been showing up. I also paint from the mind sometimes. I am a rock climber so I try to paint what I feel of my experiences in the landscape or climbing. I also have found some amazing rock outcrops on private land which inspired me greatly.

Donna: What does your work mean to you?

Michael: Big question, I am more wondering what it means to others. I am a nicer person when I am painting. I like to watch as a new work appears. Sometimes fresh out of nowhere, other times images that have been rolling around my head for some time. To me my work is records of what I can’t see but feel. I try to paint the emotion of a place. The rock series is about going to wonderful places and experiencing amazing things. The koalas are a bit trickier. They just appeared one day in the studio and keep coming out. I guess they are expressive portraits from the study of the self. I think art is that, a study of the self.

Donna: Finally, where can we see your work in the near future?

Donna: When did you know you were into art?

Michael: I will have work in the Daylesford Rotary Art show and the Swiss Italian Michael: I remember drawing in front of the TV when I was young. Meeting the makers at A Plot in Common

W

HEN Natasha Shoo encourages people to meet the maker, she actually means it literally.

Euphemisms aside, she is leading the Shoo family’s endeavours in providing a fabulous environment where artists, makers, and soon-to-be-eithers can come together, connect and learn.

It’s all happening in the 1800s barn on the family’s Lauriston property, A Plot In Common, where Natasha has been hosting the workshops.

“It’s completely comfortable, it’s a really warm, cosy, beautiful, rustic environment – it has a fireplace, and a kitchenette,” Natasha explained.

The barn wasn’t the first stop on the family’s journey; along with husband Ben, Natasha lived on the Gold Coast before spending a couple of years in Melbourne and finally, moving to the property three-and-a-half years ago, with the couple’s three children.

“We thought while the kids were young we would live on a farm and grow as much of our own food as we could.

“When we moved here, I was amazed at the number of creative people in the area.”

It didn’t take Natasha long to find her groove, slipping easily into life in the area and making her own connections.

“My everyday is coordinating workshops, we host workshops for artists and makers in the barn, plus I’m building a market garden to sell my produce locally.”

For a woman whose passion is meeting new makers, Natasha has wonderfully big plans.

Averaging about 12 people per workshop, the subjects range from soap making to ceramics, quilting, an upcoming life-drawing workshop, and even one for botanical dying – where native plants and bark are boiled and turned into dye to colour beautiful wool products.

“It’s very much based on art and the lost trades, I suppose.”

Surprisingly, Natasha herself is not an artist or a maker – she has other skills, which are vital in running the business.

“I’m creative, I’m a naturally creative person - I don’t have the skills and the expertise these people have…I have the love for it.”

She also has the vision – Natasha is already on the road to having her own market garden selling to the public.

“We grow all our own vegetables and meat on the farm for ourselves, and we use our own produce too, to provide lunch for the workshops.

“It’s spring, so I’ve put in tomatoes, lettuce, beans, peas, beetroot - I love beetroot, strawberries…as much as I can.”

There’s also some rather fabulous plans involving an old water board mobile office, from the 1970s.

“I want to turn it into a mobile produce van, so I can park it in Malmsbury or Kyneton and sell my produce to the community - it’s my goal, it’s a little way off yet.”

YNETON District Health has taken out the 2016 Bendigo Bank Macedon Ranges Business of the Year.

The hospital’s acute ward, pictured above, was also announced as the category winner for Excellence in Professional Services.

Runner-up for Business of the Year was Woodend eatery Colenso, which also won the Excellence in Food and Beverage category.

Just sayin’...

Pick me, pick me...

I

WATCHED The Block last week. Not my favourite show, but there doesn't seem to be much to choose from at the moment.

I remember as a kid, watching inane television shows and my most hated thing, cartoons, and thinking how it would all change when I grew up and could watch "grown-up TV". Never happened. The "grown-up" shows turned out to be just as mind-numbing. Mind you, I do like The Project. News done differently - which I think sort of sums up The Local. I think people struggled with how to pigeonhole it when we first published - all those 81 editions ago. Not a newspaper, not a magazine.

We ended up calling it a news magazine. But I digress.

So I was watching The Block and one of their challenges came up. They had to pack for a night and then were whisked away in a helicopter to...drum roll please...

Daylesford.

Now they had my attention. Not sure where they landed, it looked a bit like Sault, beautiful fields, and then they were at the old Cobb & Co place near Lake Daylesford. You know, the square concrety building just before you turn down to the carpark.

And the challenge was that each couple was given a bedroom to furnish and decorate - with one person to paint a picture to hang in the room, while their partner was given the task of buying all the bits and bobs.

Cool, I thought. This will be sooo easy for that second person. There is so much choice around here for fantastic and eclectic stuff! I'm thinking loads of places around Daylesford, including the Mill Market and eCasa, then a quick step down to Hepburn, over to Trentham and Kyneton, and everywhere in between.

And with all our amazing artists and artisans and tradespeople - you could snap up something really unique. Plus while you're here you need to eat - those contestants could have the best meal experiences - upmarket, downmarket, fabulous flavours, a mix of international cuisines...but best of all, I thought, what a great plug for the Central Highlands and all it has to offer. I know we get a fair go in the media - but you can never have too much of a profile. There's so many destinations fighting for the tourist dollar. What a great national promotion for us.

And what an idiot I am. Because once the challenge was dished out, one lot started painting while the others got on the helicopter and flew back to Melbourne.

To shop. And then bring their purchases back up in vans that night. True story.

My only hope is the canvases and paint came from That Bargain Place. It really does have an amazing array of all things painting. But I have my doubts. Just sayin'...

Festival educating people on real cider

HE woodstoves are still running hot in our region, and no-one has put their winter coats away, but walking around the Daylesford Cider Company with Jon and Clare Mackie, seeing their thriving orchards bursting with spring buds, and tasting their latest-release ciders right out of the tanks in the cidery, are sure signs warmer weather is on its way.

This latter program includes participating for the first time in the Australian Cider Festival, coming up in Melbourne on October 8. Clare and Mackie will be presenting their ciders for public tasting and also entering them into several judging events. It would be great to win recognition, the couple say, but their main aim is to get feedback from their peers and further their education as cider makers.

"We are just about to launch our new dry sparkling and soon after that, the ‘oaked cider’, which will be on tap by summer, we hope." Clare says.

As an active member in the trade organisation Cider Australia, which is hosting the upcoming festival, Clare says its focus is on "educating people about real cider.

This festival is going to be the best Australia has ever held, with some of the top producers in the country".

In the tavern the couple have created a welcoming space, a cosy environment on winter days for a casual long lunch, and in summer a place where people can "bring their dogs, lie around on the grass, have a drink and go home", Mackie says.

It helps that this is one of the most picturesque hospitality destinations you'll ever see. Driving along the decidedly rural Dairy Flat Road - although it's only about 6km outside central Daylesford - travelling through the Wombat Forest and paddocks, you come upon a scene that could be taken from the pages of Country Life magazine.

Visitors are welcome to have a game of bocce or giant jenga, and live music is a frequent weekend feature.

If you like cider you will love this place, but even if cider isn't your usual tipple, the Daylesford Cider Company is one of the truly special destinations in our region.

Clare and Jon (few people call him Jon - he's pretty much just known as Mackie) have brought fresh enthusiasm and loads of new ideas, including a range of new ciders, to the business, which was started 13 years ago by Melbourne solicitor David Stagg on 12 hectares in the Wombat Forest just outside Daylesford.

Clare and Jon took over the entire operation about 18 months ago. They have about 1500 traditional cider apple trees, producing 17 varieties of organically grown English heritage-listed apples, a tavern, tasting room and cidery, and firm ideas about where they want to go in the booming cider industry.

Mackie, 32, grew up on a dairy farm near Kerang in northern Victoria and at university studied environmental science with an emphasis on waterways management; he began work on a PhD but didn't finish, he admits with a wry smile.

Clare, 31, hails from Britain, west of London, and, although guests to the tavern will frequently find her in the kitchen (she's an excellent cook, Mackie says), her prehospitality background was in real estate.

The couple had been looking into cider for quite a while, Mackie says, before meeting David and agreeing to take over the business. Vote 1 Paul Houghton for Birch Ward The business of Council must be about maintaining, improving and effectively providing those sustainable services and infrastructure that the community expects, wants and needs. Unfortunately, I do not believe this is the case.

Most Council staff do a great job, under sometimes difficult circumstances. Councillors should and must support and enable staff and the community as a whole, via transparent, consultative, inclusive, and open governance. Secrets and confusion have no place.

I believe Birch Ward has reached a point where there is an entrenched inability to get things done. There are plenty of “Consultant Reports” and “Plans”, but few successful outcomes achieved.

Execution blunders are commonplace, expensive and unnecessary.

I am not about reducing essential services and infrastructure or implementing austerity measures. It is not necessary. Council can do more with less.

Us Two - Adrian & Ashley

A

S TEENAGERS Adrian Marklew, left, and Ashley Nicholls were in the same class at the Peninsula School in Mt Eliza. They went their separate ways 20 years ago but met again at a Christmas party for Daylesford Cinema volunteers.

They now also have a radio show on Hepburn Community Radio. The pair were coerced into Us Two by Ashley's wife Lauren.

Adrian: I was born in 1975 and grew up on the Mornington Peninsula. It's the same year my parents started our family home building business. We have received two HIA Australian Builder of the Year and five Victorian Builder of the Year awards. I come from a large and close family on both sides – one of my grandfathers is turning 95 this year.

Work for me was on the building sites on school holidays from an early age until leaving school. I studied aviation and technology at Swinburne but didn't enjoy it so I started an advertising business at 20 but then went into aged care to help mum when my parents divorced.

I really enjoyed the time in aged care. Then I helped dad out when mum retired and worked in the family business for 10 years before moving to the client side and concentrating on helping those looking to build or develop navigate the process and then connecting them with builders and trades as required. I was also on the board of Habitat for Humanity - a not-for-profit that builds houses for families in housing crisis. I moved to Daylesford to be closer to my amazingly awesome son Alex who is 22 months old and the joy of my life.

I met Ash for the first time at school and I want to say year 1, but to be honest, I’m not really sure. I know we weren't really close mates in school, but in a class of less than 30 you sort of know everyone. Ash left the school not long after I arrived, came back a year or two later and then moved schools again in high school.

I don’t think Ash knows this but I saw him at the Farmers Arms about three months before moving up here on a weekend when visiting Daylesford with family.

I knew the face but couldn't place where from at the time.

It wasn't until a couple of weeks after moving here permanently that I made contact with the cinema to volunteer and was invited to the Christmas party.

Walked up the stairs at the Bowling Club and there was Ash. We clicked and have become really good mates.

I became a volunteer at the cinema because I didn't know anyone in town at the time and a free movie sounded like a good trade for a small amount of work one night or so a week. That and they invited me to the Christmas party.

The cinema has been a great way to meet people and have some fun. We are both on the committee and have a joint belief about how important the cinema is.

With Hepburn Radio, like this article for The Local, Lauren talked me into it. I had a phobia of public speaking and Ash was wanting to join and needed a partner in crime.

Who knows what’s next? We are always planning the next thing! But a beer at the Farmers is probably next on the agenda.

Since moving to Daylesford I work one night a week at The Farmers Arms along with my full-time job in the city. I also do the radio show and I am the treasurer at the Daylesford Cinema. My mother-in-law Liz Matthews has been living in Daylesford for the past seven years and we wanted to be closer to her. Daylesford has been our second home for this time period and we really enjoy it here. It wasn't a hard choice to live in Daylesford – I love the community spirit.

Adrian was invited to the Daylesford Cinema Volunteers Christmas Party. This is when we met up again. I like movies and think that the Daylesford Ashley: community is fantastic. I thought that being treasurer of the cinema was a way I could give back to our great I grew up in Frankston, on the Mornington community.

Plebiscite support

T

HE Victorian Government is preparing to provide additional mental health support to the LGBTI community if the federal government’s marriage equality plebiscite proceeds.

With the proposed plebiscite scheduled to take place on February 11 next year, the Victorian Government will provide $500,000 to support the LGBTI community over the next six months.

The package will include a range of measures for young people, an awareness campaign to support LGBTI Victorians and other vulnerable groups and a funding increase to key LGBTI agencies to provide support.

The funding is part of a broader $27 million investment over four years to implement a suicide prevention framework across the state, including trials of new models in communities and health networks across the state.

Minister for Mental Health Martin Foley said while the plebiscite campaign had not started “we are already starting to see the impact – that’s why Victoria needs to be ready to stand by our LGBTI community”.

“We will act quickly to ensure our agencies have additional resources and our community is aware of the need to support their friends and neighbours during a damaging campaign.”

Comedy for Karma raising funds for the Daylesford Dharma School

STELLAR line-up of comedians including Tom Ballard, Luke McGregor and MC Cal Wilson, pictured right, – all donating their time for free - will perform for Comedy for Karma at the Daylesford Town Hall on October 15.

The Daylesford Dharma School’s third annual fundraiser will raise money to help with the school’s relocation to a property on the other side of town at the end of next year.

Tom Ballard will take to the Comedy for Karma stage for the first time ever and will provide laughs aplenty with his special brand of stand-up comedy. Not a stranger to our screens (Good News Week, Spick’n’Specks, The Project), he also co-hosted Triple J’s breakfast for many years.

Like many comedians Luke McGregor got his start via Raw Comedy, became a comedy writer on countless programs and then found spots on TV working his way up to his most well-known role as Hugh in ABC TV’s Utopia. Luke presented his own hugely popular show Luke Warm Sex in 2016 on ABC TV. MCing is Cal Wilson from Spicks’n’Specks, Have You Been Paying Attention, Thank God You’re Here and SlideShow. Meanwhile, providing pre-event warm up tunes for the audience before the laughs begin, is local act Arkie T. Williams & The Mudlarks.

W

ELL, the birds are chirping, the daffodils are blooming and spring has sprung.

There are a lot of great things about this season including football finals and yes, I mean finals as in no more bloody footy on the telly – that’s fantastic. Yes, I admit I am a lowly Rugby Union follower but growing up in New Zealand there wasn’t much choice. The other sport that this season provides, well, at least every four years or so, is the greatest of all blood sports, council elections.

Now I don’t profess to know much about politics, actually I don’t profess to knowing much about much. I prefer to think of myself as a prematurely grumpy old man before I have even reached the ripe old age of 50. The people on the road bother me, the youth bother me and don’t even get me started on the potholes. They piss me off – big ugly bloody things, they look like they are grinning at my freshly wheel-aligned ute inviting me in. But there I go off on that bloody tangent again.

Moving along – if you look to the left of my column you will see an advert that has caught my attention, Donna Kelly is running for council. Now Donna is the opposite to me and I guess that’s why I have suffered through just on 20 years of servitude, I mean marriage.

Donna is an optimist, she believes in society and our little community up here in the mountain tops. When she first raised this hare-brained idea of wanting to become a councillor, I obviously shot the theory down in flames, with a dismissive “haven’t you got enough on your plate?”.

Well, I may be a little aloof at times, but I do recognise sheer determination and grit when I see it and Donna has that in spades. So negativity has turned to optimism for me, as I see my bestie, apply herself to “keep the bastards honest”. I know, as a journalist, that has been her motto and her driver, so I reckon if she gets a crack at this council gig – look out, Hepburn Shire.

I also don’t think if she does succeed that she will get “most liked councillor of the year” from the other councillors as Donna is one of these sort of people that doesn’t back down – personally I prefer an easy life. Anyway against all my efforts to keep her away from the bureaucratic madness Vote 1 Donna Kelly – if you want.

Megafauna festival

I

NTERNATIONALLY renowned environmentalist Tim Flannery will speak on extinction and changes to the central Victorian landscape at Extinct-Lancefield Megafauna Festival in November.

The talk will be held at the Lancefield Mechanics Institute on Saturday, November 26 from 4pm to 5pm. The festival will be held over Friday, November 25 and Saturday, November 26 and is a celebration of significant prehistoric findings in the town.

Excavations reveal that giant wombats or Diprotodon, pictured above, roamed the region probably up until approximately 40,000 years ago. The bones of thousands of animals are preserved in the clay of Lancefield Swamp, making the site one of the most significant for megafauna fossils in Australia.

EPBURN Shire will celebrate its seniors as part of the Victorian Seniors’ Festival at Victoria Park, Daylesford on Tuesday, October 11 from 1.30pm to

The event, Celebrating Our Glorious Diversity in Hepburn Shire, is expected to bring a broad range of people from across the shire.

“Hepburn Health received the Rainbow Tick accreditation for its Aged Care Services in 2015,” Hepburn Health Integrated Aged Care manager Gabrielle Kirby said.

“The standards associated with the accreditation support organisations to develop and implement inclusive practices for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community.

“Following on from our success, we received a call from the Victorian Government asking if we would like to celebrate LGBTI ageing with an event during the Victorian Seniors Festival.

“We were thrilled to say yes, but we wanted to extend the celebration to the full and rich diversity of seniors who make up our shire, rather than limit the celebration to LGBTI people.

“We have partnered with Hepburn Shire Council and Ageing Well in Hepburn members to achieve the celebrations.”

Entertainment lined up includes stories from LGBTI seniors on living in Hepburn, a photo competition with Daylesford Secondary College, music, dancing and Devonshire tea. Everyone is welcome.

“We would really love to see families, seniors, people who identify as LGBTI, people from other cultures and all abilities. Basically everyone. Many older LGBTI people suffered discrimination, legal sanctions and hatred in their past. Many of those from different cultures and abilities have also faced discrimination and harassment.

“Together we help to make up this wonderful community and the strength and wisdom resulting from our experiences strengthens us all. If that is not a reason to hold a celebration, I don’t know what is.”

Ms Kirby said in undergoing the Rainbow Tick accreditation, an advisory group of local LGBTI people was established and many of these people went on to become part of the Seniors Festival Celebrating Diversity event.

“As a group we decided that celebrating LGBTI ageing was important but so was all the other diversity that makes this shire a wonderful place to live. Really it started with the people: Brian Dunn, whose job at that time was to successfully guide Hepburn Health through the accreditation process.

“Mary-Faeth Chenery, who became involved when her partner and elderly father-in-law became seriously unwell, setting her off on a search for available services and support, resulting in ‘Ageing Well in Hepburn Shire’ - a collaboration with Hepburn Health Service, Hepburn Shire Council and U3A providing a series of forums on different topics to do with ageing, caregiving and the palliative process.

“Thank you to Melanie Perks, Manager Aged and Disability Services at Hepburn Shire, who has helped the group garner some Shire resources including community buses to help transport older people and the use of The Pavilion at Victoria Park.

“We also could not have gone ahead without the support of the Victorian Seniors Festival and we are grateful for the support of Daylesford & District Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank.

“Plus all the work put in by the planning group of Brian Dunn, Gabrielle Kirby, Melanie Perks, Mary-Faeth Chenery, David Hall, Anneke Deutsch, Gillie Gough and Noelene Gration.”

We are also incredibly fortunate in getting permission to provide a sneak peek of ‘Daylesford Story’, a documentary that is soon to be launched on the history of lesbian and gay life in Daylesford. The trailer that will be shown features some of our more famous personalities who will be in the room, and some who many of us will recognise from the past. Next we have the Ukulele Affair, a trio of female singers and ukulele players who find new ways to interpret songs they love, will have us tapping our feet and up on our feet dancing the light fantastic. Judy (left above) and Helen (middle) have been partners for 22 years and have four children and two grandchildren. Jeannie (right), her husband and their family are passionate supporters of the LGBTI community. Next Sharyn and Sue will keep us moving. These amazing dance teachers will take us through the steps of the Progressive Jive with movement options for those who are seated. Meanwhile, Daylesford Secondary students have been challenged to create a piece of art depicting diversity and ageing. Their work will be on exhibition at the celebration and prizes will be presented for the best work. We will also all be able to indulge in a delicious afternoon tea of scones, jam and cream – certain to take us back in time to afternoon teas of long ago. And to keep us tingling with the dancing and ukulele playing we conclude with the highly talented Maleita Gouldthorpe "Millie" who will lead us in singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

MUSIC In Malmsbury will be held in the historic Malmsbury Town Hall on Saturday, October 8 from 7pm. The event will showcase Malmsbury's best musicians with Meryl Leppard kicking off the night and performing magic at the piano with a voice that is arresting, haunting and utterly authentic. Next up is Andy Rigby and Polly Christie serenading with voice and harp as well as Latin groove alongside Lachlan Evans on keys. Great atmosphere and food at Farmers Arms

T

HE Farmers Arms in Daylesford has long been a favourite haunt for locals and visitors alike - for good reason.

There’s the welcoming staff for starters, always ready for a chat, the great atmosphere – and then the fabulous food by executive chef Gavan Anders and his team in the kitchen.

From day one we have always chosen the bar for our culinary adventures. I like the idea that you can end up chatting to anyone and I’ve had some great conversations and made some good friends.

But we’re here, on a late Saturday afternoon, for the food – and it’s always a difficult choice. So many dishes to choose from.

Entrees Favourites from the Starters/Snacks menu include the Pork & Lapchong Dumplings with Sticky Soy ($18) and the Ham & Cheese Croquettes with Mustard Mayo ($15).

But today we are opting for the Sizzling Chilli & Garlic Prawns ($16), pictured above right, and the Saganaki with Lemon and Wilted Spinach ($16).

Perfect. The prawns come out in their metal plate really sizzling – so much so that you tend to stay back for a few minutes as the fabulously flavoured oil bubbles over. Once they cool a tad they are delicious.

Tender bites of prawn with a more than a hint of garlic and chilli. And when you finish there are nice hunks of bread ready to dip in that oil.

And who can go past a delicious, generous slice of saganaki? It’s just plain oozy, salty, fried goodness. Or badness. But you do feel better when you dig into the spinach – that is goodness – and it tastes great too.

Oh, do you know saganaki actually refers to the two-handled frying pan the cheese is cooked in? I know, who cares, just order the dish.

Mains We skipped the Light Meals – although Gavan has some great Asian meals available – Korean Bibimbap, pictured below right, and Okonomiyaki (both $24). He’s widely travelled and it shows in the direction he has taken The Farmers’ menu.

So it was onto the Mains and I accepted the recommendation of manager Neil and had the Grilled Barramundi Fillet on a Bed of Ratatouille with Pesto ($36). Thanks Neil. Barramundi must be one of the best fish around and this dish brought out flavours I haven’t experienced since a visit to Darwin. The vegetables were perfectly cooked with that kick of pesto just bringing it all to a new height.

Our waitress Georgie tried to get Kyle to try something vegetarian like the Spinach & Yoghurt Kofta ($29) or sweet like the Thai Sticky Pork Belly with Jasmine Rice & Apple Slaw ($32) but in vain.

Kyle is nothing if not a meat-eater and went for the Eye Fillet Mignon with Mash, Garlic Spinach, Beans and Jus ($42), pictured centre right. As usual it was amazing. Juicy, tender, seasoned and cooked to perfection. I managed to get a small taste – yum – but you have to get in quick! Quick note, re meat and coming soon - The Farmers is putting on a load of spring lamb dishes!

Oh, I was also enjoying a glass of chardonnay, or was that two, while Kyle stuck to beer – and was spoilt for choice. The Farmers Arms has a massive amount of beers on tap from around the globe and offering something for everyone – whether it’s a pale ale or a heavy lager. And there’s nothing quite like drinking from the tap. So Kyle says anyway. (Check them out below - Kyle couldn't resist a montage.)

Dessert Surely this should be enough sustenance for anyone but again, on Neil’s recommendation, we asked for the Share Plate with Choux Puff, Brulee and Snickers Bar ($20). Wow. Talk about a dessert overload – but delicious. Any one of these dishes would work alone but all three just gives you that bit of decadence which signals a truly great meal. My favourite was the puff – but then I did have a croquembouche for my wedding cake. I think Kyle secretly liked the brulee best – mostly cracking open the caramel top layer and then devouring the seriously delicious custard inside.

There’s a reason the Farmers Arms is a favourite – they do food and drinks well – and have staff who know their stuff. And that makes for a great pub.

HREE Central Highlands' restaurants received chef's hats in the 2017 Age Good Food Guide.

Two hats went to Lake House in Daylesford while one hat went to both Kazuki's, also in Daylesford, and Source Dining in Kyneton.

Source co-owner Michelle Foster said it was a great achievement and highlighted that locals had access to food and wine which was on par with some of Melbourne’s renowned eateries.

“This award also highlights the dedication of our staff and the quality of the local produce we have available.”

Head chef and co-owner Tim Foster said it was wonderful to be awarded a chef ’s hat for the third year running.

“We have added so much to the restaurant over the last year – our expanding orchard and kitchen garden north of Kyneton allows us to have fresh seasonal produce shaping our menu.

“It is great to work with local producers, the high quality produce the region has to offer and ensure that our menu changes with the season.”

Meanwhile, Milking Yard Farm at Trentham has won one of 13 Champion Trophies presented at the inaugural 2016 Australian Food Awards conducted by The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria.

Milking Yard Farm took out the prize for Champion Australian Poultry for its Sommerlad chickens which are sold to some of the top restaurants in Melbourne.

The chickens sell for about $25 per kilo – and they’re bigger than the usual supermarket chook, so $100 per bird is not unusual.

But the breed, Sommerlad, is a fine choice for meat – it beats the first two common breeds that Milking Yard owner Bruce Burton tried - of which all died when they were exposed to free-range living on natural food; the modern super-hybrids couldn’t keep up the nutrition required to grow from zero to two kilos in just six weeks.

The old-fashioned Sommerlads, however, take up to three times longer to grow “Rather than just being stamped as free-range, we think animals should be grown in an environment as close to their natural environment as we can make it. They came from the Asian jungle, they’re a forest-dweller.”

This is my last ever open garden and contrary to a lot of speculation, this decision is my choice and based on advice from my counsellor, my family and my friends. I have chosen to finish on a high and it’s time I started putting myself first.

I have had great support from Hepburn and Macedon Ranges shires, for which l will always be grateful. Donna Kelly - Birch Ward Wow, just 150 words on why I want to stand for council. You would think I would get extra - knowing people in the right places and all that. Oh well. I feel like I am back at school. I remember us being asked what we wanted to be when we grew up. No-one said a councillor.

One girl wanted to be a nurse. A boy wanted to be a fire truck. I wanted to be a journo. And that has worked out although I've done other things. Waitress, Japanese tour guide, shop assistant, limo driver, swimming teacher, English teacher (in Japan), companion to older people (in England) and public relations officer.

So I do have some life experience. But mostly, as a journo I like communicating, listening and helping people achieve better outcomes. And I reckon that's why I would make a good councillor. Just sayin’…

The business of Council must be about maintaining, improving and effectively providing those sustainable services and infrastructure that the community expects, wants and needs. Most Council staff do a great job under sometimes difficult circumstances. Councillors must support and enable staff and the community as a whole, via transparent, consultative, inclusive, and open governance. Amanda and I have lived and worked in Daylesford/ Hepburn Springs since 1998. We have been involved in various successful small businesses and currently operate an accommodation business in Hepburn Springs. I believe Birch Ward has reached a point where there is an entrenched inability to get things done. There are plenty of “Consultant Reports” and “Plans”, but few successful outcomes achieved. Execution blunders are commonplace. Reducing essential services and infrastructure or implementing austerity measures is not the answer. It’s possible for Council, to do more with less. I am passionate about our community and believe we can achieve more by working together better. I am a qualified community development professional with expertise in strategy and community engagement. I have worked in small and large business, health, education and disability services, and am Manager of the Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre.

I have been actively involved in this community since 2000. I initiated and manage the Daylesford Community Fair and coordinate the developments at the Daylesford Community Park (skatepark). I am a board member of the Daylesford and District Community Bank and live with a local artist and our two school-age children.

As a councillor, I would increase the focus on families and young people; build social, economic and environmental resilience; and keep rates low. I would develop strong working relationships and make decisions in the best interest of our community – for now and the future.

Kate Redwood is practical, experienced and hard working. She listens to the community and delivers on promises. She lives in Birch Ward and is an approachable, involved member of many community activities. She has represented Birch Ward since 2012 and was Mayor in 2014/15.

If you re-elect her, Kate will work for low rates, continuing improvement in all Council services, including better opportunities for youth, upgraded recreation facilities and safer roads and footpaths. She is a strong supporter of Council’s purchase of the Rex, and takes credit for the recent reopening of the public toilets there. Kate worked tirelessly behind the scenes to achieve the new Vic Park multipurpose community centre that was completed this year.

For eleven years now I have served Holcombe Ward people as their Councillor and worked towards getting the best possible outcomes for them and the whole Shire. There have been monthly Ward Meetings and other special meetings and visitations as needed to work with individuals and community groups and I am always contactable. Council Budgets are opportunities to obtain better roads and community facilities and I have sought to minimize costs and save money on Council projects. I have claimed no expenses since becoming a Councillor and pay for all phone, computer and travelling expenses myself as a personal contribution. I oppose rate rises above the rate cap to save money and achieve greater efficiency and support community planning to deliver small rural community needs. I will speak up for Holcombe residents and assist them wherever possible in their dealings with Council. I offer everyone my knowledge, experience and integrity.

I run a cattle farming business in the Shire. My family have farmed in the Shire since the 1840's. As a prospective Councillor I would like to work productively. I would like to liaise between the people in the Shire and the Council.

I would like to support the employees in the Council in the work that they do. I'm passionate about the local flora and fauna.

I'm keen to reduce weeds. I'm interested in the preservation of local history including pre European settlement in the area. The improvement of roads is important to me.

Drainage is important. I would like to see more paved footpaths around the towns.I would like to see the development of the Shires tourist attractions. Lastly I would like to support the many businesses in the Shire that provide services and employment for people in the Shire.

One Voice – All Communities Holcombe Ward’s composition of open farmlands, life-style properties and village communities brings pressing issues. Ratecapping will place ongoing constraints on Council. John will ensure Holcombe Ward has a strong and active voice in Council on fiscal control and equitable allocation of funds. John also commits to a well-run Council, with integrity in its decisionmaking working openly with the CEO and Management; allowing Councillors to meet their broader responsibilities to the Shire. John and his wife Sue became permanent residents of Glenlyon in 2012 and John became a director of Hepburn Health Service serving for 2013-16.

He is now an external member of the HHS Board Audit & Risk Committee, and remains a University lecturer in Corporate Governance and Chairman of a Managed Investment Scheme Compliance Committee. To fulfil his aims as a Councillor John is seeking your support as your elected representative for Holcombe.

Birch Ward covering Daylesford and Hepburn needs strong representation to ensure its residents receive equitable treatment. 1. I am committed to an indoor aquatic centre including hydrotherapy pool. 2. Birch Ward residents carry an unfair rate burden.

I stand committed to continue to be a strong and effective voice for my community – to work with council on the things that matter for the community.

Key projects such as the Warehouse have resulted in better facilities and library access and a new Council service centre. Upgrades to the Clunes-SmeatonDaylesford Road and other street works were a result of residents' calls for better roads. Active volunteer groups have received funding to carry out valued projects. These were delivered as a result my commitment to listen to the community and develop meaningful community plans. Other community priorities such as improvements to recreation facilities and new walking and cycling pathways are now in motion. I remain committed to restoring Clunes Town Hall and Wheeler’s Bridge, development of a youth/art precinct, sustainable economic development, protection of our farming and business communities, and maintaining the amenity of our historic villages.

The character and rural amenity of the historic region in which we choose to live is precious and must be protected. Tourism that promotes heritage and investment in Agricultural can reduce the impact of urbanisation upon the environment by stylising the nature of development. We are one of the most fertile food belts in the country and a marketing strategy to encourage prospective food producers and lifestyle farmers to set up here is possible.

Agriculture is sustainable practice and the building of dams is a safety measure in bushfire season. We are a growing culturally diverse society and it is important that we grow together. Agriculture unites us in commonality, as we all eat and cook. I envisage more food celebrations, harvest festivals and availability of fresh organic produce for both residents and visitors to enjoy. Agriculture is a viable economic growth area and identity for the region.

“Food Town”

The community consultation and decision making processes at Hepburn Shire over the last few years have been costly and divisive. I believe that Consensus Decision making that allows all voices to be heard, results in the most lasting decisions. I bring to the decision making table extensive experience and qualifications in Agriculture, Conservation, Nutrition, Community Health & Development, Childrens’ Services, Local Government and a deep historical knowledge of Coliban Ward. I led a successful 3 year project in preventing youth homelessness that gained a Public Health Award. My ancestors first settled here in 1841 and worked peacefully with the indigenous people. I have owned and managed Trewhella Farm at Musk for the past 30 years. I was a sole Independent Councillor on an ALP dominated Fitzroy Council. The next Council term is critical in balancing the dynamics between growth, development, resources, facilities, the environment and food production.

In Birch Ward, in order of the ballot draw results, candidates are Donna Kelly, Greg Thompson, Fiona Robson, Kate Redwood and Paul Houghton.

In Holcombe Ward, candidates are Bill McClenaghan, Juliet Simpson and John Cottrell. In Cameron Ward, candidates are Neil Newitt, Dorothy Russell and Aaron Hipwell. In Coliban Ward, candidates are Sebastian Klein, John McLaren, Cate Evans, David McCallum and Liz Burns.

The Local asked all candidates if they would like to submit 150 words and a headshot for this edition. Eleven candidates took up the full offer. Those who did not reply to the email were Sebastian Klein and David McCallum, both from Coliban Ward, and Aaron Hipwell from Cameron Ward. ES, it really is spring and despite the winter-like temperatures, what a bonanza these bounteous rain patterns have provided for this season of regrowth and development in our local gardens.

This is probably the first time since coming to Daylesford in the spring of 1986 that I can remember being able to dig down below spade's depth and find moisture.

Admittedly, the accompanying cold weather will slow the new growth somewhat but the bonus is you will be able to plant or even transplant shrubs and perennials for a little longer with a better chance of establishing their new location. You will, of course, need to water them in well at the time. The rain showers will be a bonus.

I'm about to take advantage of the season and inter-plant the stepping stones of a recently laid path with runners from a bounteous multi-coloured bed of violets.

Something I thought would have to wait until next winter.

Don't be in any hurry to sow any summer vegetables just yet. Germination could be delayed to the detriment of the seeds. They will soon catch up if the soil is warm and the sun shining for at least most of the day.

Nelumbo nucifera, the sacred lotus of Asia, pictured above right, and the Swiss army knife of tropical plants is grown and revered widely in Cambodia. The leaves of the lotus are completely dirt- and water-repellent which led to their reputation since ancient Khmer times as a symbol of purity, fidelity and enlightenment.

More importantly, the lotus plant is edible and because it grows wild in Cambodia, became a valuable food source during and after the horrific reign of the Khmer Rouge. Everything is usable. The long stems can supplement salad and vegetable dishes and their rhizomes (tuberous roots), once blanched to kill potential pests, are also edible. Even the acorn-like seeds, produced in large, watering can nozzle-like pods can be eaten raw and are prized for their nutty flavour.

Question - What does the pink floral display, right, have in common with the white lotus?

ANSWER. The "flowers" were pink lotus heads folded and arranged for display in our hotel foyer in Cambodia. Their thick, linen-like petals convinced us that they were artificial until we discovered a staff member folding and arranging them to represent roses, camellias and other similar flowers.

Prepare now for fire season Woodland birds at risk

Assets and Operations acting director Shane Power said it was important residents prepared their properties for the season by removing fire fuels such as long grass, weeds, twigs and leaves.

“Significant rain in recent weeks and warmer weather conditions will result in a green landscape across the shire, but this doesn’t mean that we can become complacent about the fire risk during summer,” he said.

To assist property owners in cleaning up their property, during October burningoff restrictions under council’s local law will be lifted for those residents living on land less than 4000 square metres.

Residents must not create a nuisance for their neighbours and should continue to monitor any burn-off for at least seven days to ensure it is fully extinguished. Burnoffs must be registered by calling 1800 668 511.

Council will also be getting its own house in order for the fire season by reducing fire hazards on council-managed roadsides and properties.

“With nearly 1700 km of council-managed roads in the shire, we must prioritise our roadside slashing programs to target high-traffic roads near grasslands and township boundaries. We are planning to initially focus on areas in the north of the shire that are known to dry out the quickest and we will monitor regrowth carefully over the fire season.”

Council’s Fire Management officer will also begin inspecting private properties for fire risk in mid-October. Fire Prevention Notices will be issued to those properties that pose a serious fire risk to their neighbourhood.

Council has also put together a useful planner, available from council service centres, which outlines the preparation activities that home-owners should undertake to adequately prepare their property and household in the event of an emergency.

Cameron Holmes & The Blues Dudes

AMERON Holmes & The Blues Dudes are Cameron Holmes (lap steel, guitars, vocals), Samuel Hudson (bass), Cale Burke (drums), John Hunter (harmonicas) and Ian Maddick (saxophone). The Kyneton-based band play what they call “a very ‘Melbourne’ interpretation of the blues”. Cameron chatted with Kyle Barnes.

Kyle: How did you come together?

Cameron: Well, myself, Sam and Cale have known each other for some time and had jammed several times prior to the inception of the band. I started playing again live around the city at various venues as a solo artist, and we began to get things rolling again. John, our harmonica player, we met at a little bar called Whole Lotta Love in Brunswick and we started doing a few open mic sessions together.

Ian Maddick I met through the same networks. After this, we pretty much started booking a few gigs and seeing where it went.

Kyle: What do you get from your music?

Cameron: Life. A musician without music is like a lake without water. Nothing can describe the connection you have to your fellow performers when you play. It’s like wireless communication - they know what you are going to do before you do it.

Kyle: Is there a thriving music scene in the Central Highlands?

Cameron: There is and there isn’t. There is so so much local talent up here, from Dave “Deltahead” McDonald, to 40 Thieves, to even our act - the venues do what they can up here, they really do, but there is just not the critical mass of people that there is in other regional centres. I would like to play the Central Highlands a hell of a lot more, but there are only a few venues that support the original scene up here.

Honourable mentions to The Royal George Hotel, Major Tom’s, Holgates and The Musicman in Bendigo. Musicman is three levels, has amazing production, a great owner and reasonably priced alcohol.

Kyle: Can anyone play or is it inherent?

Cameron: Anybody can play. Full stop. I don’t care if you sound like a dozen cats being kicked down two flights of stairs - it’s all about getting your inside on the outside - expressing yourself. Anyone can do that. Proficiency? That’ll come later, but making a start is the most important thing.

Kyle: Where can we hear you next?

Cameron: We have a heap of dates coming up and it’s constantly evolving!

Cinema discussions Pop-up exhibitions

C

OMMUNICATION is ongoing between the Daylesford Community Theatre and Hepburn Shire Council regarding an alternative location for the cinema.

Two sites in particular within the Rex and the existing library have the potential to meet the needs of the cinema and detailed assessments are being carried out.

Theatre deputy president Gina Lyons said: “We look forward to having further discussions with the Hepburn Shire in the coming weeks in relation to the two proposed sites that the Shire agreed would be suitable for the cinema's location”.

“We feel the Rex is our natural home and we see the potential of co-location with the shire for extending the use of the cinema as a community asset.

“The library would be a stand-alone option and its position on the Midland Highway just off Vincent Street also makes it an attractive site for the cinema.

“We also appreciate the great local support for maintaining a community cinema in Daylesford.

“The Daylesford Community Theatre will do our best to make sure that the council will provide the locals with a venue for the cinema that the community can enjoy and be proud of."

HE Daylesford Museum is hosting a series of pop-up exhibitions of local artists.

The first was John Stormer Green known to most locals as Jack Green of Green’s drapery (now eCasa) on the corner of Vincent Street and Central Springs Road. Jack was a prolific painter of Daylesford and its districts for more than 50 years and as a student of Daylesford Technical School in the 1940s he was taught art by the master, John E Grant, and later went on to teach many local people himself.

Places in his classes were eagerly sought after and former students include Mavis Anderson, Fay Chapman, Heather Grant, Margot Jordan, Alma Kretchko, Chris Lannigan and Betty Togni.

Jack painted scenes of Daylesford often focusing on views of Wombat Hill from various places around the district such as Table Hill, Bald Hill, Wheeler’s Hill Road and Elevated Plains.

He painted many Yandoit and Glenlyon properties, some of which were of family significance. He also captured some of the most breathtaking views we enjoy in the districts around Daylesford such as Musk and Eganstown.

The Daylesford & District Historical Society is keen to photograph his paintings and make a catalogue of Jack’s work to keep as a permanent record of one man’s view of the town and surrounding districts.

HE Daylesford Springers Basketball Association has had a long history in Daylesford and is hoping to carry on the tradition with a summer basketball competition for juniors and seniors.

Unfortunately according to the president Carson White, pictured, this may not happen. Although the association has had plenty of interest from junior and senior players who want to play over this coming summer, the association is struggling to find referees. “Over the years we have managed to get by with some great support from our local referees however as it stands today we only have one confirmed referee available.

Without at least three referees being available each week, we cannot run basketball this summer unfortunately.�

Carson says the association is asking anyone with basketball referee experience to contact him urgently if they are interested and available this summer. Referees would be required on a Tuesday night between 4pm and 8pm and are fully paid based on their level of experience.
