Community replaces stolen tips - for Nika

W

HEN Ann-Maree Mackley heard that her Daylesford café Muffins & More had been broken into she only worried about one thing.

That the thieves, who destroyed the front door as they entered over night on April 19, did not steal the contents of the tip jar.

And that’s not for herself, co-owner Heather Ryan or their staff. The money in the jar is never divvied up – it goes straight to the Cambodian Kids Foundation to help their sponsored child Nika.

But sadly the contents of the jar, about $200 in notes, was gone along with the new till and its float.

“The float and the till weren’t a big deal – we just replace that. The worst thing is that they have stolen from Nika.”

But as often happens bad news spreads – and good things can happen.

“That day, Sue Waters, who is absolutely amazing, put a bit about it on Facebook and then comes in herself and gives me $50 cash and a big hug,” AnnMaree, pictured right with a photo of Nika, said.

“And then Clancy, a young bloke in town, comes in with another $50 and then someone else comes along.

“So we already have about $250 for Nika again – just from a few people doing a good thing. Which is just great.”

The Cambodian Kids Foundation is an Australian not-for-profit organisation founded in Woodend by the Cooper family – of Color Me Cooper in Daylesford and Woodend.

Ian Cooper said the foundation focused on working at ground roots level with funds raised going directly to education programs in Cambodia.

Mr Cooper said sponsors were able to give gifts to their children and any monies raised went to “the greater good of the village”.

“Ann-Maree has been donating for years now and since the theft I have also set up an online fundraiser site at ‘everydayhero’.”

On the site Mr Cooper says “any donation would be greatly appreciated, if for nothing else, but to show the guys at M&M, that the majority of people are generous and kind, and more than happy to help, and perhaps that every cloud has a silver lining”.

All donations are tax deductable.

Meanwhile, in 2013, The Local ran a story about the Cooper family and chatted to daughter Sam. Sam said the family had changed their lives to ensure the children in Soksan Village received international standard education along with helping the community to help itself.

Sam, who works both at Daylesford and Woodend, when she’s not studying at university or visiting Cambodia, said the foundation started in 2006 after she and mother Donna returned from a trip to the country.

“My mum and I went to Cambodia and worked

with a lot of small organisations, and some big ones, in different areas and when we came back we really just left our hearts behind,” she said.

“We wanted to help so we started raising money, and raised about $20,000 and started sending it. But while some organisations spent it exactly how they wanted and we were happy, with others it would sometimes get lost or be spent on things we didn’t want it spent on.

“Being new we didn’t realise how corrupt Cambodia was. There are a lot of good organisations there but a lot just want to make money.”

Sam said her family, Donna and Ian and siblings Jack and Indiana, decided to create their own organisation which would be completely transparent so those donating could see exactly where their money went and one also run by only volunteers in Australia.

“When we first started, we did small projects like building wells, so we could take photos and show people what we were doing,” she said.

“Then we started to get a bit of a following of young people, they liked what we were doing, and we asked them what they wanted and they said their

dream would be to help them through their education so they could become teachers.

“So in 2007 we put them all through university and the majority have now completed their Masters and are all now working in a school that we set up in 2012 Soksan International School.”

Set in Soksan Village, the school is one of 22 projects the foundation is working on in the region, and has about 300 students although it is large enough for 2000.

“A lot of schools in Cambodia have no choice but to take on 1000 students but the idea for us is quality over quantity.

“We want our school, in terms of education, to be good enough for international standards in education, classroom sizes and teaching.”

Along with teaching the basics, including very real stranger danger classes, the school also has a host of electives including music, art, dancing, sport, sewing, textiles, media, photography and even farming.

“We realise that not all students will continue to university so if they want to become a farmer, we want them to be the very best farmer they can be.”

Passion in realistic sculpture and carving

ASTLEMAINE artist Richard Yates was born and raised in Casper, Wyoming, USA surrounded by the beautiful Casper mountains and miles and miles of prairie. But it was a brush with leukaemia which allowed him to follow his passion.

“The wildlife and scenery has without a doubt left a mark on me,” he said. “(And) after moving to Australia in 2002, I was captured by the rich history and culture of my new home.

“I have always admired wood carving and in 2005, after a poplar tree fell in the back yard, I dragged it into my shed and tried my hand at carving for the first time.

“I hadn’t quite finished when I was diagnosed with leukaemia and subsequently endured a bone marrow transplant.

“After this brush with such a life altering experience I and my wife, Karen, viewed life very differently and we decided I should pursue my passion and follow my artistic path.

“Realistic sculpture, relief carving and functional art in the form of carved bed heads, doors and lighting is where my passion lies.

“I love the raw earthiness of the timber, the look, the smell, the feel. I’ve worked with huon pine, Canadian red cedar, oak, Italian stone pine and cypress, and I also incorporate steel and bronze in my work.”

Richard and his wife Karen opened their own gallery for the first time during the Castlemaine State Festival to exhibit his work as a collection.

“It was a very rewarding experience and we will open during special events in the future.

“There is nothing more exciting to me than to work with a client and bring their ideas for an exciting, artistic addition to their environment to fruition.”

Who’s who on The Local’s crew?

A couple of editions back, experienced journalist – think The Age, London Guardian, RMIT lecturer…Kevin Childs introduced himself and talked about his tree change to the region. In this next instalment of ‘who’s who on The Local’s crew’ journalist Kate Taylor gives an insight into her life. Read on.

I

F LOSING my sight is the greatest thing I achieve in my lifetime, then my deathbed is going to be a very disappointing place for me.

Being blind, and a freelance writer, and a new mum – these things are, individually, mildly interesting. Put them all together and they don’t equal inspiration. They equal insanity.

Now, at 32, and in my 13th year of having no sight, I attract comments from people wondering how I do it.

‘It,’ is not easy. I don’t dance around singing ‘I’m every woman, it’s all in me…’ I mostly just shuffle from one crisis to another, wondering why my baby thinks that sleep is for the weak, and trying to figure out if I can stop wasting time making cups of coffee and just eat it out of the jar.

And if that makes me inspiring, then the bar is set very low. I am bound to exceed expectations just by getting out of bed in the morning.

In transitioning from a sighted 19-year-old working at the Ballarat Law Courts, to learning how to be blind, to discovering journalism, through three years of IVF and now as a mother of a one-year old, there have been bumps along the way.

In the first weeks of being a mother, my Bella would not sleep. So I tried to give her to the postman. He was very good about it. A lovely man, my postman.

Now, I find myself in the same position as many working mums – looking after a baby for 12 hours per day by myself, writing stories while Bella naps or late at night when she’s in bed, cleaning and cooking and washing whenever I can fit it in. I just happen to do it without any sight.

It all comes down to the big O. Organisation, that is. Micro-managing every five-minute block of my day to make sure I am prepared for it, and am making the most of it.

There is of course, frustration. That half a banana thrown from the high chair, skidding across the tiles and under the oven can take me 20 minutes to find. With the help of the cat. And without eyesight, Bella’s one minute away from my fingertips can cost a smashed cup, while an explosive nappy is worth a whole box of wipes and half an hour of my time.

And ever since Bella started rolling, I’ve been trying to work out how I can strap my iphone to her so I can use the find-a-phone app to work out where she is.

But I do it all for the love of it.

The love of all of it – of not being able to see Bella’s little face, but being able to feel her eyelashes flutter against my cheek. Of having a husband who puts in 13-hour days and lights up when he gets home to his tired girls, automatically hunting down bananas.

And of getting to write fascinating stories about local people for respected publications - even if I do have to do it at midnight, still covered in WeetBix, with a computer that talks to me in a Stephen Hawking monotone, while my James waits in our warm bed for me.

Megan and Liam say “I do”

April 2015

Fire prevention works on Ballan-Daylesford Road

EGAN Clements and Liam Hartz were married at Mingela Homestead in Drummond North on March 7.

Megan’s hair and make-up was done by The Lounge Hair & Beauty in Daylesford – owned by Liam’s sister Pauline.

Liam is a local builder and grew up riding for the Glenlyon Pony Club and also represented Victoria in showjumping.

The couple met in 2011 when Megan, involved in showjumping herself, asked Liam for some private lessons.

Three years later, Liam offered her a rose, dropped to one knee and asked for her hand in marriage in a very romantic bush setting – adorned with fairy lights and wooden love hearts – one for every month they had been together.

Both Megan and Liam teach and build showjumps and have just started a new business, A Moment In Time - Wedding and Event Hire, after Liam found himself making much of their own wedding decorations.

VicRoads advises residents and community members that it will be undertaking fire prevention works on Ballan-Daylesford Road between Flacks Lane and Sailors Creek Road. This will include targeted tree trimming and removal.

Trees along the route are considered a high risk of falling and causing a road closure during strong winds and bushfire events.

In the interests of public safety, some trees will be removed to reduce this risk.

A qualified arborist has assessed trees along the route that are situated close to the roadside.

VicRoads recognises that some of the trees are wildlife habitats and will work to relocate wildlife during the works.

Work has commenced and will be completed in mid-2015.

T WAS 5.30am - and it was raining.

“Let’s not go,” I said. “Surely after 20 years of not missing one we can take a break.”

Five minutes later I heard “I feel guilty” and replied “me too”. And so we got up, dressed warmly, found umbrellas, loaded Rosie into the backseat and headed to the Dawn Service at Daylesford.

And as usual we were really glad we made the effort. If you can’t get up a little early one day out of 365 for people who made the ultimate sacrifice what can you do?

When we arrived I thought the numbers were a bit down. Maybe the rain. But then, as the ceremony neared, more and more people came out of the darkness making their way to the cenotaph.

By 6.30am they were blocking the streets, standing on traffic islands and park benches.

(Oh, to the cars who kept trying to drive through - really? And to woman in the beige trenchcoat who held her ground and diverted traffic up past the Daylesford Hotel - well done. We saw you and appreciated your efforts.)

The service was, as usual, moving and emotional. Hearing Sallie Harvey sing And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda always brings a tear and Kathryn Clark, granddaughter of Jack Walker, did a superb job sounding the Last Post.

Afterwards everyone was invited to breakfast at the Daylesford RSL - always a great chance for a chat and a hot meal. And it’s the one day when you don’t have to wait until noon for a drink!

Not that we were drinking. No, true story. We were off to other Anzac Day events although you can never make it to every one.

I love Eganstown for its real country feel - a billy boiling on a campfire, homemade biscuits and people riding in on horseback. But we headed, for the first time to Kyneton, lured by a vintage plane flyover. It was fantastic. A parade, a band, speeches, a flyover and loads of kids - all rugged up nice and warm kicking up autumn leaves. War is never good but if you had to fight for anything it would be to have those children playing happily without a care in the world.

One little girl, wearing her dad’s and grand-dad’s medals, had already been to the Shrine and even though she was too young to understand I had the feeling the Anzac tradition would continue on through families like hers.

Final stop was Trentham. And again, proud people marching, some with photos of their ancestors, and grateful people applauding.

One hundred years on but we will never forget.

And look, the truth is I am an independent sort of girl who is friendly - but I don’t seek out attention. Which isn’t fair because I keep getting overlooked by people choosing the more outgoing cats for adoption. We can’t all be Lady Gaga! Alchemy 7 all about artistic collaboration Story | Image: Anthony Sawrey

T

HEY call themselves Alchemy 7 but boast only five members. Technically this means the team of local artists should actually be known as Alchemy Several.

But regardless of their size on any given day, their aim is to bring art out of the studio and expand the creative process into unchartered territory. The group consists of visual artists Michael Gray, Rosie Laszlo, Madeleine McCristal, Amanda Hills and vocalist Rebecca Morton.

Michael Gray has lived in Guildford for five years and is married to Rebecca. He studied sculpture in Melbourne and works with recycled timber and similar found objects. He fashions this material into evocative forms that echo the beauty of patterns found in nature.

Rosie Laszlo, originally from Belgium where she studied fine arts, now has a studio on her bush block near Shepherds Flat. “To me, collaboration is exciting because it acts as an emulsifier for disparate art practices,” she says.

Madeleine McCristal is well known for her work designing and building homes derived from shipping containers. At the same time she has also forged a strong artistic career and lived in Hepburn for many years. One of the principal aspects that drew her to Alchemy 7 was her interest in the relationship between the human body, the voice and their depiction in sculptural and musical concepts.

Amanda Hills, a Daylesford resident, is originally from Sydney and studied and lived in Georgia, USA for eight years. Her work delves into the complex relationship between the man-made technological world and the natural realm. “Collaboration leads you to create work that you would not normally do and it is important to move out of your comfort zones.”

Finally, Rebecca Morton is a vocalist and performer with studies in musical theatre. She has performed around Australia and has been based in the Castlemaine region for many years. She is ebullient about the type of art made possible through group projects. “I love this form of interaction because it brings performance and fine art together in a fusion of insight and joy.”

Alchemy 7’s most recent collaborative project was for the Maldon Art Walk last month.

The site for their installation was under a large oak tree at the Maldon Neighbourhood Centre. The largest objects were two freestanding wooden spirals made by Michael that served as dramatic pointers

to the activities within. Next to this was a female form by Madeleine suspended in a bustle made of strips of steel bar that acted as a mirror to a conical form that Rebecca stood in for her performance. This stage construction was enhanced by a metallic wrap formed out of woven copper wire created by Amanda which flowed down onto the ground. The installation was completed by a series of polished wood stools inscribed with inspirational words, built by Rosie.

When Rebecca started singing a scattered group of curious viewers soon came and sat down forming an intimate audience to a unique exhibition. Quite unexpectedly, they became part of a happening that enriched all who witnessed it.

So whatever is next for Alchemy 7, one thing is certain. No matter what work you do, no one is an island. It’s all about collaboration.

A Sparkling Life (AN ONGOING column by Marian Sidwell and her recollection of living in Daylesford - and early childhood memories. The first excerpt ran in The Local, Issue 28, September 15, 2014. Back issues at tlnews.com.au) Drawing by Daylesford artist Brian Nash art@briannash.com.au I COULDN’T believe it. I was beside myself with excitement. Visions of brown bottles, salads and hills flashed by. I was going to be a local after all!

They had enrolled both my sister Joan and me at the Daylesford Higher Elementary School in Vincent Street and my little sister next door at the state school. The term ‘Higher Elementary’ meant a combined technical and high school but I didn’t know that then.

I remember tearing around the Richmond neighbourhood telling my friends I was going to this ‘higher elementary’ school and in my mind it just had to be a step up from a ‘lower’ one!

My dreams came true that summer. The smell and the feel of our great outdoors entered my system and I revelled in it.

Our house facing south was built high up on the corner of West and Victoria Streets, later to be changed to Central Springs Road.

It wasn’t on a big block of land as country blocks go but to me it was huge. The house was cream weatherboard with a red tin roof.

A walled in concrete and red brick verandah spanned half of the front facade.

A matching low red brick fence ran along the front and around the corner. Lawn was everywhere. The front verandah overlooked the thickly forested and undulating Great Dividing Range and just out of our vision in the valley below was Lake Daylesford.

In the years to come the sky above those hills ruled our weather.

The trees some years were laden with snow, other years they thundered with fire.

The town was still as hilly and as beautiful as I had left it and I really didn’t mind the rather smelly outdoor toilet the new house had. Whatever a septic tank was, it was to be dad’s first big project.

I suppose the house itself wasn’t all that big either. The front room with its open fireplace was long and narrow and intended for a lounge room, but as the two bedrooms the house did have were quite small, we three girls found ourselves in the bigger front room with a chest of drawers shoved up against the fireplace. We had a great view from our window. Mum and dad’s room across the little hall always seemed dark as it looked onto the verandah.

There was a step down from the little hall into the kitchen come family room and to this day I relate my mother’s physical fitness to that step. She could stand on it in the hall, bend over and put her hands flat down on the kitchen floor below it. She had spent much of her youthful spare time either bike riding or helping Auntie Flo train for Olympic selection in rowing trials. Auntie stroked the Victorian team to become Australian champions three times during the mid to late 1930s. The team never made it to the Olympics. The raining bombs of World War Two stopped play. I still have auntie’s hand-embroidered Australian Champion blazer pocket.

The kitchen, having once maneuvered the step, was large enough to house a dresser, our kerosene refrigerator and two tables – a small one under the window beside the wood stove and open fireplace and the big one in the middle of the room. The big one no longer had to serve a dual purpose any more as the hygiene station was now located in a bathroom.

To me the bathroom was the absolute height of luxury with its white bath, shower over the top, matching white basin on a pedestal, hot and cold running water and pale lemon walls with black and white imitation tiles.

It was off the back lobby which was home to gum boots, skipping ropes, shoe cleaners and rain coats.

HE Trentham Food Hub is again hosting the annual Growers, Cookers & Eaters dinner at the Trentham Mechanics Hall on Saturday, May 2.

This is the fourth year that the event has been held.

The dinner is a celebration of local food featuring dishes from several local chefs and live entertainment from local artists. Seasonal produce will be sourced from local producers including Angelica Organics, Wombat Forest Organics, Trewhella Farm, Mt. Franklin Organics, Daylesford Organics, Jonai Farms, Milking Yard Farm, Sidonia Hills Beef, Barfold Olives and Holy Goat Cheese.

A six-course banquet will be put together by Gary Thomas from Spade to Blade Catering and Slow Food Central Highlands, including dishes from The Plough, The Cosmopolitan Hotel, Redbeard Historic Bakery and La Bonta.

Blackwood’s Cat & Clint and Kyneton’s King Maxwell will be taking care of the entertainment with live performances of the finest blues, bluegrass and old time tunes. Todd Dales from Redbeard Bakery and Mel Thomas from Chaplin’s Barista Bar will also be on hand brewing up delicious espresso coffee and there will be a bar stocked with premium regional wines, cider and craft beers.

VicRoads Western Victoria regional director Ewen Nevett said that VicRoads was taking its environmental responsibilities and obligations very seriously.

“A qualified arborist has assessed trees along the route that are situated close to the roadside.

“Residents may notice a number of coloured tags on trees along Ballan-Daylesford Road which identify trees to be trimmed, removed or which may harbour wildlife.

“VicRoads recognises that some of the trees are wildlife habitats and will work to relocate this wildlife during the works.”

Tree works are expected to start next week and take around three months.

ESIDENTS and visitors to the Macedon Ranges can learn about local history while walking and picnicking in the surrounds of Carlsruhe, with new interpretive signage and infrastructure upgrades now completed in the township.

News 11 The $120,000 project was funded by the Victorian Government and Macedon Ranges Shire Council, with significant planning and input from the Carlsruhe Community Planning Group. It also included the construction of adult exercise equipment, a public toilet, a new path network, barbecue shelter and seating in the Carlsruhe Common near Yelka Park.

The new signage outlines the history, customs and practice of the Taungurung people. It includes the restored historic headstone of a local Clerk of the Mount Macedon Bench of Magistrates, who drowned crossing the Campaspe River by horse at Carlsruhe in 1847.

ORE than 500 basic camping sites over 70 campgrounds in 19 parks throughout regional Victoria now have no fees.

The bookings system for these sites will remain in place until July 1. People who have made a booking between now and 1 July will be refunded automatically by Parks Victoria, but the bookings will still be honoured.

A basic site is defined as unserviced, with minimal ranger patrols and pit or no-pit toilets. From July 1 these sites will no longer require a booking and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Meet therapist Tik

IK White is a massage and beauty therapist at EKO in Daylesford. But there’s also her dance background, giving her brothers’ friends massages in return for Mars Bars and singing, loudly, and apparently very well, in the car. Editor Donna Kelly caught up for a chat.

DK: So Tik, what’s your background?

TW: I was born in Adelaide but grew up between there, Melbourne and Wellington, New Zealand. I have two older brothers. My eldest brother played rugby and from a very young age I started to massage his legs and back after games. In fact his friends used to give me Mars Bars or a $2 coin for a back massage. My family was very affectionate and loving and from as young as I can remember I used to give my Dad back scratches and shoulder massages so I think in many ways I was a massage therapist before I even knew it.

DK: How did you get into the industry?

TW: In 1998 I was studying a degree at Deakin University in Arts with a dance major. In that year I went on a holiday to Port Douglas. I was walking past a Natural Therapy centre and as I looked up the beautiful tropical garden path I said to my friend at the time “I think I want to be a massage therapist and work somewhere like that” Well one year later after I’d met the love of my life, my husband Josh (in Port Douglas) I completed a Certificate in Therapeutic Massage at the Australian School of Therapeutic Massage in Camberwell. And two years later I ended up working at that very same centre back in Port Douglas.

I’ve worked in a number of boutique day spas over my 15 year career including owning and operating my own in Hepburn Springs.

DK: What do you like about it?

TW: I really like how someone can walk in carrying a lot of stress and in a short amount of time I can not only fix the physical tension in their body but so often their emotional and mental stress too. I love that I get to meet people from all different walks of life and yet when you’ve been doing this for as long as I have you get a real understanding of how we are all one and the same and that there is beauty in that. I have to say that I absolutely love working at Eko Skincare Spa. I love the calming atmosphere, the beautiful women I work with and my very loyal clients some of whom feel almost like family to me.

DK: What sets you apart from other massage therapists?

TW: Because of my dance background I have a very clear understanding of body mechanics and I can target specific problem areas and if needed work out a plan with the client that might involve further treatments, exercises and/ or stretches. I have very strong hands that know how to find all the right spots but I am able to still create a relaxing experience no matter how much I’ve had to really work an area (except of course if someone is coming in for a sports massage!).

DK: What is your favourite treatment to do?

TW: As I am also a beauty therapist I’d have to say I love the combination of a massage and a facial so at Eko that is the Revitalize Package. When you give someone a full body massage and then finish with a relaxing facial it’s like you’ve given them the full top to toe experience and they practically float out of the room which is very rewarding.

DK: Cool, finally tell us something no-one else knows about you – until now.

TW: Oooooh that’s a hard one - I am such an open person there’s not much that I keep to myself. Ok here it is....I like to sing really loudly in my car and when I do I think I’m pretty good.

Joining the 2015 event is Australian chef, presenter and media personality Guy Grossi who is following his passion for locally grown produce and will be doing a “Cooking demonstrationhighlighting the best qualities of the beloved tuber” between 1pm and 2pm.

Also on display is Spud Art which has been developed under the direction of Monash University Faculty of Education Visual and Creative Arts Education’s Dr Geraldine Burke.

Dr Burke has been conducting the ‘Spud Art’ activity with about 100 students at Tylden and Trentham primaries with the children making paper board shorts and tee shirts decorated with inked spud prints. The children are also “up-cycling” spud sacks to make wearable items.

Spudtastic children’s activities and games include a spud dig, spud art, animals to pat and wagon rides to enjoy, face painting and rock climbing. There will also be spud sack races for children and adults.

Entertainment includes roving performers such as stilt walkers and circus side shows while the main stage will be pumping with performances from bands including The Cartwheels, All Day Fritz, Odd Sock Circus, Suitcase Full of Blues and Crosswind – and young local performers.

The Great Trentham Spudfest opens at 10am. Entry is free.

Giving young people a sense of belonging

RACE Rowbotham knows how important it is for young people to feel a sense of belonging.

Having studied public health and international development, the 25-year-old Lyonville resident said feelings of connectedness were vital to one’s well-being and the well-being of the community as a whole.

So at the end of last year, when Grace was asked to take over as one of the Daylesford Youth Group’s youth development workers, she accepted without hesitation.

“I think the youth in this shire would say the biggest gap is there’s nothing for them to do. That’s part of the aim of this group – for young people to have something to do and be a part of. When you’re a part of something you feel connected.”

The Daylesford Youth Group started more than a decade ago when Grace’s mother Coralie Rowbotham and her friend Elaine Anderson joined forces. The group was established for young people aged between 12 and 20, providing a space for them to interact, connect and build friendships.

Having attended the youth group herself as a teenager, Grace said it focused on building connectedness for young people in the community.

“I think every person at some point struggles with feeling on the out, so this environment allows people to feel accepted all the time,” she said.

The youth group is held every fortnight at the Daylesford Community Church, and members participate in events such as day trips, dinners, camps, games nights and dance parties to name a few.

Grace said she and her fellow youth workers took a holistic approach with the group, focusing on the

physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of the members.

“They (the participants) know we are there for them in all capacities – whether in the faith capacity, emotional capacity or a fun capacity. Everything is take it or leave it. It’s very fluid.”

Having been raised in a religious family, Grace said her passion for community work stemmed from her Christian faith and her love for her hometown.

“I want to serve the community I’ve been a part of all my life. Also, I think for all youth workers, our values are about love, compassion and acceptance and

they stem from our faith and our understanding of those things. What I personally would like to achieve a caring and supportive environment for young people where they can be themselves and be accepted and accept other people as well.”

Protector Parker sees all Aborigines off the land

DWARD Parker’s site for the Aboriginal Protectorate at Franklinford meant Crown land being set aside between Daylesford and Castlemaine, with an inner reserve of about 259 hectares for cultivation and an eight kilometre radius for “the Hunting Ground of the Natives”.

Confusion arose, however, as to whether the inner reserve was mainly for cultivation by the Aborigines or a homestead for Parker.

With rich agricultural soil, plentiful water and magnificent views Parker seemed set. His annual pay was 250 pounds, as well as the use of supplies, bullocks and the labour of the Aborigines and assigned convict servants.

Although his makeshift homestead was replaced after two years, by then his Mary was dead, worn by a harsh life. Parker was away at the time but Mary was mourned by the Aborigines for 48 hours, all the while refusing food.

Within a year Parker married a neighbour’s daughter, Hannah Edwards. They had six children, including three boys but two girls died in infancy.

His surviving family was now nine sons and two daughters.

Just over three years later, his eldest son died aged 18 at Franklinford.

A snapshot of life at the time is in the story of a fine morning early in 1841 when up rode a party of nine armed horseman. They expected Parker and his family to be dead at the hands of the Aborigines.

Wrote Parker’s son, Joseph, “the leader of the party, in addressing my father, wondered how he and his family survived in the midst of so many ‘savages’, as he termed them. My father replied by saying that he resorted to acts of kindness and proper treatment. ‘Here is my ammunition,’ said my father, drawing from his pocket a small Bible; ‘there is my convincing element, and up to date it has not failed me’”.

He told government inquiries that the Aborigines would respond to education or opportunities to develop their land if they could see some advantage and not just in the interest of white intruders. He learnt the language and observed the customs of the Djadja Wurrung people.

The Protectorate system fell out of favour with the government in the 1840s. In 1847 La Trobe scathingly wrote that Parker was “doing no more than any other settler and less considering the money it cost”.

Once he lost his role as protector Parker must have looked at his well-to-do squatter neighbours for he got a pastoral licence for the protectorate, keeping all equipment, stores and stock, supposedly to use them in the interests of the Aborigines.

The family moved to the foot of Mount Franklin

to start farming and grazing. But Parker had to keep justifying occupying the land. He ran a school until the last of the remaining Aboriginal people were sent to Coranderrk, although it had poor attendance and there were charges that the schoolmaster’s tuberculosis infected his pupils.

Gold fever meant a population boom and the few remaining Aborigines reduced to begging at the edge of the white community.

Part of Parker’s land was subdivided, with 258 hectares near Mount Franklin kept “for use by a small number of Aborigines who wished to continue farming”. By 1860 Parker still leased 4000 hectares for grazing.

A letter-writer known only as “A Native” wrote to the Surveyor-General in Castlemaine querying the use of government rations at the station and the conduct of Parker’s junior colleague, a school teacher whom he accused of not earning his wages and working his farm instead of teaching.

A small stand of poplars just off the road from Daylesford towards Castlemaine, with sweeping views across the ranges, is where Parker died aged 63 at his homestead in 1865, 15 years after the closure of the Protectorate and a year after the removal of the last Djadja Wurrung people to Coranderrk, the land and improvements still in his possession.

Soldiers’ letters give insight into war life

ETTERS from the Front has been published by the Daylesford and District Historical Society – with letters from 61 soldiers taken from newspapers from 1914 to 1918.

The team of Judy Files, Les Pitt and Anne Dobbs started the project about four years ago after researching 1100 soldiers on the society’s database.

As part of the research they read the letters, written by soldiers to relatives at home, and handed over by the relatives to the newspaper, and realised “this would make a good book�.

The trio also took advantage of a grant from the Hepburn Shire Council along with “a very generous donation� from the Daylesford RSL to pay for printing.

Judy said every letter with a local link found its way into the book which really brings to life the day-to-day lives of the soldiers throughout the war years.

Anne said while most were bright and cheery at the start of the war, as the years passed, many became quite dark. “They also became like our family,� she said. “It could be quite emotional because at the start you didn’t know if they were going to make it home or not. So you would be barracking for them and thinking ‘not long now’ but then you would read the bad news. “And that was sometimes right at the end of the war – so we knew they weren’t coming home, but they didn’t – that was the worst of it.�

While many stories of war tell of parental loss and the sadness from an adult perspective, the exhibition – The Soldier’s Gift - makes the experience of World War 1 relevant to today’s youngsters.

Through realistic illustrations and personal items from the era, The Soldier’s Gift helps visitors gain an understanding of how different the experiences of a child 100 years ago are to those today. Overwhelmingly sad, but also exploring the ideas of endurance and courage, this is an exhibition that really tugs at the heart strings. On display are newspaper articles, letters, photographs and even a lock of baby’s hair The exhibition is centred on an illustrated book of the same name, The Soldier’s Gift, written by Tony Palmer and illustrated by Jane Tanner. The book tells of a young girl, Emily, whose brother has gone overseas as a soldier in World War 1.

Her brother, Tom, goes far from the dry Australian countryside that has been their home, to exotic countries and on to the fateful battle at Gallipoli. Tom sends lots of letters and gifts, including seeds of a tree. But one day the letters stop coming, and the effects of the war reach deep into Emily’s family.

The original illustrations and sketchings from Jane Tanner are on display in this exhibition. Jane is a well-respected illustrator of several children’s books. Her drawings make the story and Emily’s experiences resound poignantly to the visitor.

Particularly relevant to children of regional Australia, The Soldier’s Gift – both the story and the exhibition – helps young people understand how foreign, yet also how intimate, the experiences of World War 1 soldiers were to those at home.

Kyneton Musuem curator Bronwyn Wilson, pictured above, has collected local items from rural families whose family members fought in World War 1 which are displayed alongside the illustrations. There are beautiful, embroidered postcards sent by soldiers back home to loved ones and also on display of Coo-eee badges, made and sold locally to raise funds for the war effort.

A favourite illustration for Bronwyn is of the tree Emily grows from the seed her brother sent home. The actual tree used in the illustration is in Romsey. Jane Tanner has donated the framed illustration to the museum which will pass it on to a local primary school. The school will be chosen from those who come to visit the exhibition.

Kyneton Museum is open from Friday to Sunday, 11am to 4pm, at 67 Piper St, Kyneton. The Soldier’s Gift exhibition runs until May 9.

Anzac book partnership a first for Victoria

AYLESFORD Primary School principal Peter Burke has handed over the school’s book ‘Discovering Daylesford State School ANZACS’ to Daylesford RSL president Ian Tinetti.

At an Anzac assembly at the school last Tuesday, Mr Burke said it was two years ago that Keith Pyers had suggested the students take up the challenge of finding information about the names on its honour board.

“And so the Daylesford Primary School Anzac Project began. Last November five teachers from the Federation University spent three weeks working with our grade 5 and 6 students (and) we now know a whole lot more.

“The board is made of local blackwood and made right here at Daylesford State School by teachers and students. A teacher, Mr Wilkin, had a hand in the making of the board, then went to war and his name is now on the board The board was made in two parts, initially with 111 names at the unveiling, then more names added after 1916 and by 1918 numbers were 161, a total of 218.

“We have information on 204 of the names. But have yet to unveil information on 14 of the soldiers for instance E Drummond & A Drummond, J Cary and J Catton.

“We now know that the board includes two teachers from Daylesford State School, the rest we believe are all past students of the school. We know many of the Daylesford boys travelled on the same ship to war.

Some of the soldiers never made it to war, like William Zeis who died of tuberculosis.

“Of the 218 names we now know that over 60 soldiers were killed. Percy Robson was killed on the night of the landing at Gallipoli, April 25, 1915, a further 55 soldiers were wounded, many of whom were sent home due the severity of their injuries, two were POWS, John Bell and William Lawry and many experienced sickness, some requiring hospitalisation.

“Some of the soldiers fought in both WW1 and WW2 like George Anderson and J Rowe and Jack Bodinnar.

“All the soldiers received the Victory Medal and a handful received military medals for gallantry in action. William Campbell was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for receiving an honourable mention on August 8, 1918 for his courage while under attack by 50 Germans. He saved a number of lives during this battle.

“Thomas Peel Dunhill, a doctor, a surgeon, during the war was appointed to the 1st General Imperial Hospital, after the war. He was appointed as surgeon to King George V in 1928, and later King Edward VIII, King George VI and finally Queen Elizabeth II. He was knighted and became Sir Thomas Dunhill. He is possibly the most famous student of DPS.” Mr Burke said the school was calling on the community to help with information on the missing soldiers and all 218 soldiers.

“I am very proud of the students who have had a

hand in the development of this book.

“My understanding is that this is the first time the Federation University has entered into a partnership with a primary school to undertake such a project. It may well be a Victorian first or in fact it may well be a first within Australia.

“It gives me great pleasure to hand over the very first copy of our first edition of ‘Discovering Daylesford State School ANZACS’ to Ian Tinetti.”

Bright and breezy dining on offer at The Plough

T

HE iconic old Trentham Hotel was a little tired when chef Mark Mills decided to take it under his wing a little over a year ago, and give it much of the same treatment as his acclaimed Plough Bistro@ Myrniong.

Today, it’s a bright and breezy open plan bistro/ bar/lounge/beer garden, with an exciting locally sourced menu, extensive wine list and a great range of specialist and micro-brewery beers on tap.

With a recent arctic blast giving more than a hint of the long, cold winter ahead, we cheerfully headed off for a warm, dry spot and lunch…in Trentham.

We were warmly greeted by maitre d’ Mitch who settled us at our table before Mark joined us for a chat about the restoration and his philosophy on success in the world of hospitality.

Our waitress Maddy soon arrived with a carafe of water and the complimentary tapenade for two.

Starters The extensive and most tempting entree/starter list ranged from terrines and dips (from $12), through Moroccan lamb fritters, to milk braised pork with pickled quince, caramelised onion and seeded mustard ($14).

On advice we chose the charcuterie board ($24), a huge selection of cold meats, terrine, in-house cabana and chicken parfait accompanied by Mark’s own shiraz jelly.

We launched into it with gusto and conscious of the courses to follow still found it impossible to leave it unfinished. Peta suggested that under normal circumstances we would find that the platter, accompanied by wine and a coffee, would make a perfectly satisfactory luncheon.

Mains The main course menu covered all tastes including a few old favourites, all with Mark’s distinctive touch, from a reasonable $26.

The duo of lamb - slow-cooked rolled leg and braised moroccan fritter with mash and green beans first caught Peta’s eye but then she saw the Sher Wagyu beef and red wine pie with mashed potato and peas ($28). Once she learned that the pie was “real” in the French pithivier style it was a no brainer. It was, in her words, “magnificent and really hit the spot” on a cold, wet day.

I decided it was a “steak day”. Again, the choice was wide and varied.

My final choice was between 36-hour slow-cooked blade steak with mashed potatoes, peas, mushrooms and a red wine sauce ($27) and Black Angus porterhouse - finished on grain for 86 days - served with bok choy, creamy mash and choice of sauces ($31).

The porterhouse with garlic butter won. It arrived on a large platter accompanied a swirling Mount Fuji of soft and creamy potato mash and was cooked medium rare to perfection. I did try my best to finish it all but following our tryst with the charcuterie and the promise of a “special” dessert treat, common sense finally prevailed.

Something sweet…from $13 Peta was first tempted by the Golden Gaytime with honeycomb and caramelised peanuts until a Baileys & chocolate bombe alaska with hot chocolate passed by on its way to the next table. What a delight that was - a beautifully crafted mountain of toasted meringue which Maddy sliced open to reveal multicoloured layers of house-made ice-cream, over which she poured hot chocolate.

I had set my mind on a vanilla pannacotta with mixed berries and raspberry sorbet until our waitress Maddy told me that Mitch had something in store for me. He promptly arrived with next week’s dessert special for me to ‘road test’. Liquorice pannacotta with poached pear, apple jelly and lemon curd… sensational. The subtlety of the liquorice was delightfully enhanced by the other elements. Peta even sacrificed a large spoonful of her bombe to get a taste.

Drinks On our arrival we opened proceedings with one of the boutique beers but The Plough’s comprehensive wine list also includes a great many local labels and indicative of Mark’s support of local produce, the biggest range of locally sourced “house wines” by the glass I’ve ever encountered. I chose an excellent merlot to accompany my steak. Peta, as designated driver, sensibly but grudgingly decided against indulging in any wine.

INTER is quickly approaching and it’s then I start to eat heartier meals like stews, lamb shanks and steak and kidney pies, which need bigger beers to match. So as the evenings get darker, so do the beers.

Dark ales, porters, brown ales and stouts are great beers to match to meaty dishes, but can also be an awesome match to chocolate desserts.

Typically these styles have toffee, nutty, chocolate, coffee and caramel flavours from the crystal, dark and roasted malts used that also give them their black, dark amber, brown colour and ruby mahogany hues.

So stoke the fire, check the slow cooker, line up that 70 percent cocoa free trade block of chocky and try a couple of these beers which will warm you through the upcoming winter months.

Moo Brew (Moo Brew, Tasmania) - Moo Brew Dark Ale - 5.0 per cent abv Pouring a deep brown colour, this ale has sweet chocolate aroma. Chocolate and roasted malts are highlighted, as is the hop spice bitterness that helps this American style dark finish quite dry. This style of beer is certainly not as heavy as a stout or a porter, which can make it an easier drinking treat. The Moo Brew beers are unpasteurised so ensure you keep them cool. Treat them with care as you would any other food to ensure they are enjoyed as they were intended.

Open garden at Wombat Park

W

OMBAT Park will hold an open garden on May 2 and 3.

The story of Wombat Park started in 1854 when grazier William Stanbridge built a modest, timber homestead and began planting a magnificent garden and a collection of exotic trees that was to be described as “superior to any that can be seen in any private or public garden in Victoria”, according to the local newspaper of the day.

His extensive and varied garden, characterised by what are now breath-taking specimens, is one of the jewels in the crown of Victoria’s garden heritage.

Stanbridge was a Member of the Legislative Assembly who became wealthy from gold and by 1860 had built a brick stable and coach house complex.

Twelve years later a second homestead was built – it was relocated to Daylesford in the 1930s. In 1910, his daughter Florence Cox and her husband built the current homestead in the Arts and Crafts style of the era.

The long, romantic elm avenue dates from this time, as does the famous crenellated, tapestry hedge the largest and oldest in the country. Both of these are listed on the National Trust Register of Significant Trees as are many other trees at Wombat Park.

The Mackenzie family took on a wild and beautiful place in 1996. Since then, Isabel Mackenzie, with gardener Stewart Henderson, has overseen and implemented the steady restoration of the structure of the whole garden while lovingly preserving its unique past.

All proceeds from the opening will support the restoration of the historic Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens in Daylesford with the Friends of Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens offering home-made cakes, tea, a gourmet barbeque, wine, coffee and a range of plants for sale from Lambley Nursery.

As well, Paul Bangay will be on site to sign copies of Stuart Rattle’s Musk Farm with all royalties from sales going to the Friends of Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens.

Wombat Park is on the Midland Highway, and open on May 2 and 3 from 10am to 4pm. Tickets are $10 with children free.

Saleyards views Free workshop

AYLESFORD’S ANZAC 100 street event and concert commemorating the Gallipoli centenary is expected to raise $9000 for the refurbishment of the town’s War Memorial.

OBBY farmers, large scale producers, and everyone inbetween, are being asked for their views on the future of the Kyneton Saleyards.

Organiser Frank Page said feedback for the event, held on April 1 had been “stunning and widespread”.

“We seem to have impacted widely across the community and created goodwill and due reflection on this important centenary. That represents community building at its best and our thanks go to all those who supported our commemoration.

“People told us it was a very moving event that transcended Daylesford’s diverse community, bringing people together to pay tribute to families living here a century ago whose lives were affected by a terrible conflict.”

INGSTON’S Avenue of Honour has been included in the Victorian Heritage Register for its cultural significance.

There are more than 140 families of moths with somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 species but only about 400 butterfly species. Many moth species are undescribed.

Beare boys racing in the Isle of Man TT

F

ATHER and son team, Noel and Dwight Beare are on track to race for Clive Coates Racing at the 2015 Isle of Man TT after a successful debut last year.

They came home as the fastest Australians ever to race a sidecar at the event.

This year their race number and start position will be 26.

Noel said Dwight was living on the Isle of Man and competing in the British Formula 2 Sidecar Championships and other selected races with British passenger Dean Kilkenny.

Noel has also been busy competing this year as stand in passenger with Team Alton Racing on a Formula 2 sidecar at the Barry Sheene Festival of Speed at Sydney Motorsport Park, in the first round of the Australian F2 Sidecar Championships, winning all three championship races, and at the Victorian F2 titles at Broadford with three second places and a first place in the four races held.

Noel is now training and preparing to race at Morgan Park in Queensland in May with Team Alton Racing in the second round of the Australian F2 sidecar championship before leaving to compete in the Isle of Man TT.

HAT icy blast and sleeting rain that met us last Sunday was a harbinger of what could be a long, cold winter ahead of us this year.

Judging by the multilayered attire of most people I met scurrying for shelter in the main street of Trentham there should quite few starving moths in our wardrobes.

The cold blast serves as a timely warning for us to get our pre-winter garden chores in hand asap.

Autumn with its gorgeous russet, burgundy and gold-leafed trees is probably my favourite time of year. Apart from their picture perfect display, the falling leaves can provide a bumper harvest for the garden.

In less enlightened times, weekend mornings were punctuated by the aroma and coils of smoke from countless burning heaps of leaves…a total waste of a valuable source plant nutrient.

With the exception of most hard-leafed plants and eucalypts which are best left to break down slowly in the compost bins, the leaves can simply be raked or swept onto the shrub and perennial beds where they will soon merge into the top soil or whatever mulch material you use.

into your vegetable beds or improve the texture of potting mix, I simply rake the leaves into a heap in a sheltered corner of the garden and cover it with either onion bag netting or some old potato sacks, weigh the edges down to prevent escape and give the whole lot a good soaking. Remembering that organic material takes in nitrogen in the rotting process add a little liquid nitrogen fertiliser to the mix. The nitrogen will be returned in measure when you add the resultant compost to your garden… possibly within a few weeks if you keep the moisture level up.

Speaking of compost, if you don’t have the time or space for a compost heap or bin you can still enrich the soil in your idle verge beds by using a simple trenching method.

Dig a short spade width and depth trench in a bare spot and toss your organic material into that, and replace the soil over it. Repeat the process, extending the trench as you go. By next sowing season, you can plant over the trench, giving the developing plant roots a rich source of food as they grow. By the time you have worked your way through the vegie patch in this manner, the first spot will be ready for another turn.

I have recently been indulging in a bit of garden reconstruction and to my dismay discovered hordes of snails under almost every rock I turned over.

Obviously they have been hibernating there, waiting for the first soaking rains. Now I’m as fond of escargot as the next gourmand, but this meant war.

My mind turned back to my early childhood when my father used to send me out into the family nursery with a bucket containing a thick layer of garden lime which was instant death to the little

blighters when they landed on it.

I was paid the princely sum of sixpence per bucket which, in those days, bought an enormous amount of mixed lollies. I soon discovered their favourite hiding places…amongst the cannas, agapanthus and other thickly stemmed plants.

A quick squirt with a hose brought them slithering out in their dozens and into my eagerly waiting bucket.

My penny-conscious dad later found out the khaki-campbell ducks absolutely adored slugs and snails and provided beautiful, nourishing eggs in the bargain.

My lime bucket was soon replaced by three of these delightful birds who graced our seedling growing area on snail patrol.

I’d like to say this story had a happy ending but… we soon discovered that they liked young lettuce and other vegetable seedlings even better, cleaning up a whole bed in one night. I’d also like to say the ducks spent their retirement years happily on that “farm” where naughty and unwanted puppies went…but no, they provided much wanted protein and Sunday roasts to our post-war family.

You will be pleased to know that there are simpler ways to rid your garden of these voracious winter pests…either by spreading garden lime, sawdust,or even eggshells between them and your young seedlings. My favourite method is to bury a glass jar up to its neck in the bed with 5cm of beer in the bottom.

Problem solved, they’re not fussy about the label, and judging from the riotous singing from the bottom of the jar, die quite happy. Promise!

LOSER Productions are touring Castlemaine and Bendigo to present a double feature with Sophie Hyde’s 52 Tuesdays - winner of the directing award at Sundance, the Crystal bear at Berlin Film Festival and the Australian Writers Guild award for Best Screenplay - and Matthew Bate’s documentary Shut Up Little Man! An Audio Misadventure.

There will also be question and answer sessions with both directors.

Both films will be shown at the Theatre Royal in Castlemaine this Friday, May 1 from 7pm and 52 Tuesdays will be shown at La Trobe University’s Visual Arts Centre in Bendigo on Saturday, May 2 from 2pm.

Sophie said making films was about telling stories in a unique way and then connecting with audiences.

The Friday night session will also include a preview of their new film Sam Klemke’s Time Machine which premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, and is touring internationally before its Australian premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival in October.

Mental health training at men’s sheds

URING March, 19 men at five men’s sheds across Macedon Ranges undertook a different kind of training.

They completed 12 hours of Mental Health First Aid training, delivered by facilitators Pauline Neil and Annie Rowland who also run the council’s youth mental health programs.

Pauline said Men’s Sheds were an ideal forum for having a candid discussion about mental health “with what can be a hard to reach but also at-risk group of people in our community’.

“The Men’s Shed movement provides such an important point of connection week in week out for so many men in our community. What a great opportunity to increase mental health literacy among older people in our community, reduce stigma and give these men the courage to seek help when they need it.”

Pauline said evidence showed older men were at risk of developing mental health issues, whether due to transition from work to retirement, the loss of a partner or other factors.

Participant Bill Achison, from the Kyneton Men’s Shed, said the trainers “spoke our language, were very professional and had our undivided attention”.

Co-facilitator Annie Rowland applauded the group’s openness and willingness to engage with mental health issues.

“These men now know how to recognise when there might be a problem, and how to respond when something that started as a ‘friendly chat’ turns into a critical conversation,” she said.
