Miners’ hut to create new destination

HE humble miners’ hut is a goldfields icon. It is about to get a new status as a surprising piece of sculpture tucked away behind Lake Daylesford.

Award winning Glenlyon sculptor Jason Waterhouse came up with his idea to link the golden past with its workers and weave in highly decorative wrought iron in an echo of the gates at the Convent Gallery.

The half-sized hut will be at the intersection of three tracks on the far side of the lake, not far from the derelict bandstand.

He had the widest possible choice of location for the hut – somewhere in Daylesford town, in a park or the Wombat Gardens. It could have gone anywhere, he says.

“I didn’t want to create something that was just plonked in a space,” says Waterhouse. “We don’t need further adornment.”

So it will be down the back along the creek. “I hope it will create a new destination, become a cultural icon and activate the space.”

Being in such a remote spot is there a chance of the $26,000 sculpture being vandalised? “You can’t make anything arsehole-proof,” Waterhouse says bluntly. “If someone wants to wreck it they will. It’s as vulnerable as a park bench…it’s always open to someone to use a crowbar or a rock.”

But, he adds, the district is noteworthy for its lack of graffiti.

And his work has suffered in the past. His winning sculpture in what was then the richest and most prestigious competition at Werribee Mansion was vandalised. This was a Citroen CX. Parents allowed their kids to jump all over it.

We talk in his workshop at The Stockroom in Kyneton, a wonderful warehouse of artisan-produced pottery, pictures and a boggling amount more, including a magnificent wooden bench that once stood proudly in a Masonic temple. Also at work in The Stockroom is his wife, the web designer and lecturer Magali Centric.

They have two girls and a boy, aged, three, seven and 16.

He brews a good coffee in the mini café, then tells how his engineer father, like many similar apparently, was an artist in denial, who has done a lot of work for Buddhists. And an aunt is the prominent botanical illustrator Marion Westmacott.

Whipping out his laptop he laughs as he tells how one work in the shape of a temporary mound in the carpark at Lorne was used by skateboarders. He enjoyed videoing that. “Good on them,” he says.

Waterhouse, 38, talks of taking existing objects and changing the way we look at them. Outside, a battered red ’72 Ford Fairlane is sort of skewered on a white plinth.

Then there are his smaller works, such as those tucked away in Ballarat streets, best seen at children’s eye level. Or even on the ground. “It was brave of Ballarat,” he says. “This is work for the observant.”

He shows antlers, sticks and bones to which he has added resin, raising the question where does one object begin or end.

His miniature miners’ hut, its image not yet publicly available, will have an aperture allowing visitors to pop in. Chances are when it is installed in a few months’ time it will become a lovers’ nook, down in the dell.

Traditional photography taught at East Trentham

HOTOGRAPHER Ellie Young has been based at Gold Street Studios in East Trentham for 15 years. She took time out for a chat with editor Donna Kelly.

DK: What’s your background?

EY: I teach traditional photographic methods at Gold Street Studios where I show hand-made photographs and teach a wide range of processes. I studied at Photography Studies College in Melbourne achieving a diploma in illustrative photography. I also have a business degree from Monash University and a degree in applied science photography and a master of applied science in photography both from RMIT university. All this is a great base for running Gold Street Studios DK: How did you get involved in photography and why?

EY: My father was a lighthouse keeper so to document the family growing up he captured and processed his own photographs. I remember a dark room at a very early age. I have followed photography since at a few different levels.

DK: What does your work mean to you?

EY: I guess it is my life - I love it in all its forms DK: What do you think photography means to others and with smart phones can anyone be a photographer?

EY: Photography is a way of expressing yourself. (And) yes, we all can take a photograph but what we do with the image becomes a different story. I shoot analogue on 8 x 10 sheet film for my art - and do document and commercial work on digital.

DK: How do you help others with their photography/ creative journey?

EY: I show them there are many ways to interpret a photograph.

DK: What is your tree change story?

EY: I left the corporate world and commercial world of photography to share knowledge and hope to inspire people to explore the endless photographic world. I consider myself very fortunate do the things I love every day of my Link: goldstreetstudios.com.au life.

Wasp season keeping Ronnie Layfield busy

OR Daylesford resident Ronnie Layfield, killing wasps is a dead-set passion.

Which is lucky for the people of Daylesford.

At the moment, Victoria is in the middle of a booming wasp season, with pest controllers across the state reporting having more work than they can keep up with.

“It’s probably a season equal to as bad as I’ve seen, and I’ve been doing this for about 20 years,” Mr Layfield said. “I’ve done about 120 jobs so far this season – and there’s plenty more to come.”

Wasps are thriving in the ideal conditions – a dry spring following a mild winter which failed to kill off wasp nests by heavy frost.

As their numbers have increased, the wasps are becoming more problematic to outdoor diners as well as at people’s homes.

“They get stung - and that’s when they ring me.

“They’re landing on people’s food, or when people are just being near their nest, or trying to exterminate the nest, or while people are working in their gardens. I even had nests at my place… they picked on the wrong bloke.”

Mr Layfield has also done jobs at Breakneck Gorge – 29 nests in four weeks – as well as exterminating eight nests at the Daylesford Primary School.

“I’ve done the lake, I’ve done 26 nests and there’s still about eight or 10 to go. They’ve got ideal things plenty of food, and they’ve got plenty of water. It’s easy pickings for them.

“They’re everywhere and I just try to help where I can. There’d be hundred of nests around the town at the moment, and I would have already gotten rid of that many.”

Mr Layfield explained that he lays down pieces of fine chicken breast for the wasps to pick up, follows them as they take it back to their nest, then exterminates the nest.

“I don’t want a job, I’d prefer there would be no wasps.

We need heavy rains and heavy frosts this year.”

Daylesford District Hospital has treated a handful of patients with wasp stings, but not large numbers because medical treatment is usually not required unless the patient is experiencing an allergic reaction.

Symptoms of a wasp sting include burning pain, a raised lump and inflammation however multiple stings are common because unlike the bee, a wasp does not die after one sting.

An ambulance should be called if a child is stung more than five times, if an adult is stung more than 10 times, if a sting occurs to the mouth or throat, or if there is an allergic reaction or history of an allergic reaction to wasp stings.

Government recommendations for treating a mild sting include cleaning it with soap and water, using ice to

reduce swelling and pain, using a pain relieving medication and an antihistamine.

However the increase in wasp stings has also created a boom in home remedies, which include making a poultice from garlic and salt; rubbing the head of a marigold flower, or crushed basil, on the site; applying a paste made with vinegar and baking soda; applying a slice of cucumber; or sprinkling either apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, or olive oil on the site.

Trentham Art Show over Easter

T

HE annual Trentham Art Show will be held over the Easter long weekend.

Spokeswoman Bette McLaren said the Best Local Artist award would be held again with a prize of $250 “thanks to the generosity of our local sponsors”.

Ms McLaren said 276 entries had been received so far, across all categories, including 23 junior entries. There was also a new category - Digital Media - to encompass digitally enhanced photography/art pieces.

Judges for 2015 are Trentham artist Catherine Abel for art and Agave Print Studio’s Dianne Longley for craft.

The show will be held from April 3 to 6 at the Trentham Mechanics Hall with the opening night on April 2 – along with awards announced & presented. Works will be available for sale from 7.30pm. Cost is $15 which includes supper.

Memories of Daylesford’s first eight to Gallipoli

T MUST have seemed like a heck of a good adventure.

A group of young men, aged in their 20s, going off to see the world albeit through the “war in Europe”.

In August 1914, Mayor G. W. Parker entertained the first batch of volunteers from Daylesford with plenty of cheers and applause from “several prominent businessmen” who had also been invited.

The eight were William Menadue, 25, Edward Monaghan, 22, Gladstone Sinclair, 25, Robert Fox, 22, Roy W Townsend, 22, Gordon H Dolphin, 23, Bernard Monaghan, 27 and Reuben J Bonser, 26.

According to a report in the local newspaper of the day, Mayor Parker spoke of “the first watch of Daylesford’s volunteers” praising them for “their patriotism and self-sacrifice”.

Commanding officer Lieutenant Barlow described the young men as “lads of the right stamp, full of stamina and pluck”.

“Our soldiers are taking a trip, but it might prove to eternity” he said, adding “if the young men who had been chosen did their duty they would be assisting towards the attainment of a result that would mean the levelling in the dust of a great foe to liberty and the triumph of peace for many years to come.”

At the end of the night, Mayor Parker “individually wished the lads success and good health in their soldiership and declared ‘We all wish you au revoir, but not good-bye’.”

After a rousing God Save the King “the pleasant proceedings then terminated”.

And so Lance Corporal William Menadue, a miner and lay preacher, born in Eganstown in 1889, found himself headed to war with the F Company 7th Battalion.

Almost a year later he would be dead.

The men left Australia on Sunday, October 18, 1914 on the troop ship HMS Hororata along with 2000 troops and 200 horses. The six-week journey was via Albany, Western Australia where the HMS Hororata joined a fleet of 36 troop ships which then went via Columbo, Aden, Port Said and the Suez Canal before the troops went by electric tram to the Mena training camp.

In the Anzac landing on April 25, 1915, it was around 5am when the boats of the 7th Battalion got to the beach at Anzac Cove.

On May 5, William was shot through his shoulder during the advance on Turk positions at Krithia and spent a month in hospital.

The 7th battalion returned to Anzac Cove on May 17 and William had his leg blown off at the Battle of Lone Pine. He died on August 11 on the hospital ship Devanah and was buried 200 miles out to sea.

A Daylesford newspaper report on August 21, 1915 reported that there was “widespread regret” over his death.

“This young man was one of the first batch of volunteers. His sterling character and kindly manner made him a general favourite.

As he was a local preacher of the Methodist circuit, he was well known throughout the Daylesford district. Sincerest sympathy is extended to his parents and other relatives.

“In telegraphing the news of the young soldier’s death to the Rev. D. Provan, the Defence Department added that the sympathy of the King and Queen and Commonwealth was extended to the deceased’s relatives. Lance Corporal Menadue was about 26 years of age, and unmarried. The flag at the Town Hall was flown at half-mast yesterday out of respect to the memory of the young soldier.”

William’s nephew, John, who still owns the family property in Eganstown with his wife, Carolyn, said the couple had researched his uncle to try and discover more about his short life.

“These young blokes were off on an adventure, especially at their ages. They were miners so there was very little prospect of excitement for them here.

“We didn’t really know anything about him, he died well before I was born, but he lived here and it was 100 years since he died – it all evolved from there.”

Along with myriad letters and postcards from William, mostly addressed to “Dear Mother and Father” and signed off “Your loving son Will”, John also found a highly detailed book, Our Dear Old Battalion: The Story of the 7th Battalion, AIF, 1914-1919 by Ronald J Austin.

The book’s summary says it is “a stirring story of one of Australia’s

most famous infantry units of the Great War, tracing its formation and early life at Broadmeadows, training in Egypt, then to Gallipoli followed by the Western Front in 1916”.

And it is.

OMETIMES I have to pinch myself that this is a real job.

It is hard work and long hours but there’s also the freedom of having no boss and being able to make decisions on the fly. You probably realise that sections like “Rockin’ the Look” and “Pets@Work” were made after a couple of glasses of chardy.

But in my former life at newspapers decisions like that could have taken years.

Someone would have raised it at another one of those meetings - where you wonder why you are there and will anything actually be more than just noted in minutes - and then there would be the discussion.

What people are rockin’ the look, how would we find them, what if they thought they dressed quite normally and got offended. Which pets would you choose, would a pet be working if it just slept in the office, what if you ran out of pets... and should you use the @ symbol? Maybe the older audience won’t understand.

And minutes would be taken...and then it would be relegated to yet another meeting for a bit more thought. Perhaps a consultant would be brought in. A fashion specialist or a vet.

None of that here. I just turn to Kyle and say “what do you reckon?” and he looks up from his computer where he is looking at photography equipment sites, and says “OK”. And that’s that.

And it is nice to say, unlike other publications around here, The Local is going great guns. We are giving more work to local people and have even started helping other businesses get more work for themselves. Great to share the love.

So when I hear that print is dead - I have to wonder. Yes, we are online but when we deliver many people say “I have already had a read but I will take my hard copy too, thanks very much”. So there is a need, a want, for something to have and hold. And the people who seem to be the biggest proponents of “print is dead” are the big media outlets who probably just want to lose their print bill and only be online. It’s a lot cheaper. We know.

I feel sorry for many former colleagues - some of whom are waiting right now to find out if their jobs are secure or it’s time to start looking in a market which is already loaded with unemployed journalists.

And I really don’t see how sacking talented people helps the quality of publications. Or how sending young, first and second year journos out into the

field armed with just an iPhone helps either. They are expected to not only record interviews but also take photos, tweet, share on Facebook and then head back to the office to write their own headlines and drop copy into boxes of pre-determined sizes.

Yes, they are being given training but there is a reason the sub-editors have the highest wages - they are the backstops, or they were, with the local knowledge, the longest careers and the ability to win Walkleys with their wordsmithing.

That all takes time and if I was a young journo today I would be very worried about the laws of defamation. I was pulled up twice in my early 20s and only had the explanation “but the police told me so it must be true”. The editor nearly had a fit. “So the crime has just happened, no-one has been charged, no-one’s gone to court but we are saying so-and-so is guilty?” Whoops.

Anyway, enough about me.

If you get time, and even if you don’t, read Geof Brown’s letter to the editor. It made me sad, angry and then happy. I am sure it will do the same for you.

And finally, The Local is very proud to be the media partner of the ANZAC 100 event on April 11. It is going to be fantastic and whether you are a family who just wants to enjoy the free community event in Vincent Street, Daylesford, or you want to go a step further and enjoy the Daylesford Town Hall concert, supper and dancing afterwards, you should go along if possible. A real commemoration for all those who fought for our freedom.

Passion for charcuterie leads Damian to Piper Street

W

ITH his parents cooks and his grandparents caterers, Damian Sandercock was unlikely to avoid a career with food - he completed his cookery apprenticeship in Adelaide in 1997.

He found himself cooking mostly in fine dining restaurants in Adelaide, UK and Melbourne before he started a family and moved to Kyneton. In 2005 he built a wood-fired oven and opened Pizza Verde, a family friendly restaurant, but a trip to France in 1999 had ignited a passion for charcuterie.

With his then girlfriend, now wife, Bree, Damian cane across a came of Rillettes du Canard in a small shop in the Latin Quarter and paired it with baguette and a bottle of new season beaujolais - and never looked back.

“We decided then that it would be good business for our future and I love that charcuterie is shared food – it suited our philosophy on life.”

Damian collected books, talked to experts, translated recipes and practiced methods throughout the years. A dog-eared copy of Jane Grigson’s 1967 classic ‘Charcuterie and French Pork Cookery’, found in a secondhand bookshop has been a great resource.

Now operating the Piper Street Food Co, Damian supplies a range of terrines, rillettes, pâtés, pies and sausages to over 60 quality delis, foodstores, caterers and restaurateurs around Victoria and his range is now available in Sydney through Hudson’s Meats and Jones the Grocer.

“All of the products are hand crafted and based

on traditional methods and recipes. Because of the simplicity of this ancient craft the quality of the ingredients is everything,” Damian said.

“Each of the ingredients has it’s own provenance whether its free-range pork shoulder from Western Plains Pork, organic herbs and garlic from Angelica Organic Farm or Mt Zero Pink Lake salt.”

There have also been numerous gold and silver medals from the Royal Melbourne Show Fine Food Awards 2012 & 2013, a delicious Magazine medallist’s award and he was most recently honoured with the 2013 Winner’s Trophy from the delicious magazine Producers Award for the pork rillettes.

Damian is also keen to share his knowledge and passion for charcuterie and he does this through demonstrations at regional food events like the upcoming Regional Producers Day, a part of the Daylesford Macedon Harvest Festival, at The Lakehouse. It will be showcasing award winning charcuterie including pork rillettes, pates and terrines as well as traditional English style pork pies, voted best in the state at the inaugural Pork Pie Competition.

UR weekly bath was a big event.

It was always on a Sunday morning before Sunday school. While the water was being heated in the old wood copper mum would bring our best white shoes out to the gully trap and proceed to clean them with white shoe cleaner poured out into the lid of the jar. A lump of rag was dropped into this and the exercise began. While this was going on we would be arguing as to who had had first bath last week. The one who went first of course got the clean hot water.

By the time two had been in before you and had their hair washed as well the water was pretty grotty. Mum would ‘top-up’ with the tin dipper but that only made for warmer water, not cleaner. Those ‘first in’ baths sure were worth fighting for.

Our daily hygiene routine consisted of a white enamel basin being brought outside each morning and put on a ledge near the gully trap and filled with warm water from the kettle. We would begin with a hands, face and neck wash followed by teeth cleaning over the running tap of the gully trap. We would have competitions as to who could spit clean through the grate. At night a towel would be placed on the kitchen table for us to sit on and the basin duly brought out again and an all over wash would be had. There were no arguments here – the youngest went first. I can remember how the soap would sting my legs when mum wasn’t quick enough with the rinsing off. We would clean our teeth indoors and spit...all together… into the basin!

Remarkably enough our health was good; just the usual childhood ailments would appear from time to time and put one of us out of action for a while.

However one not quite so normal did strike my little sister. It was a bout of boils on her bottom. She spent days sitting in a small basin full of a prescribed solution from the doctor. Still with no teeth in her head, she was a pathetic sight.

I had a thing about flying. It may have stemmed from dad having been in the air force, or perhaps from my fascination with birds, I don’t know, but I was determined to find out for myself what it was like to fly on my own. And this is how I executed my flight.

After school I took my pillow and placed it on the cobble stones, climbed up onto the cubby house roof and jumped. Unfortunately at the end of my skinny little legs was a pair of heavy black school shoes. My legs of course collapsed on impact and the back of my shoes cut deeply into my groin. I ran crying into the house with blood streaming down.

During my entire childhood I can only remember the luxury of one holiday. I push from my mind the school camp at Queenscliff. I never looked upon that as a holiday. It was 10 days of horror. Cold showers, hard beds, whistles blowing and sweeping floors is about all I can remember of it apart from the sheer joy of getting home.

Moments of magic in tree change for journalist and author

What is it about central Victoria that is so attractive to Melburnians that many of them upstumps and move here? You could list the beauty of the countryside, its serenity, the friendliness, lack of stress, having a big garden, sharing, availability of fine fresh food (and wine) and finding yourself in a place where laughter flows easily and often.

There is much more, however, to departing from an inner suburb where almost all needs are at hand to a place where your resources, such as they may be, are called upon.

The story of the move here by me and my wife, Maureen Cooper, begins in a way at the Convent Gallery, where we were married 20 years ago. For quite a few years we had spent idyllic weekends in Queensberry Street, in a cottage owned by a friend. Arriving there on a winter’s night to a fire awaiting only a match, and fresh flowers and jam, became a seductive pleasure. So did watching the sun sink over the horizon, Lake Daylesford a little flicker through the trees.

Several times we were on the point of buying a home here, but unlike their city equivalents the easy-going real estate agents in the area did not push us to close the deal and we fell into that contagion, buyers’ remorse.

But the thought of being continually jammed into a commuter train where a sardine would suffocate, the long lines of traffic, especially at weekends, just to get to a film, the relentless march of buildings going ever higher eroding the sky and the remarkably aloof attitude of neighbours as working-class migrants moved out while lawyers and accountants elbowed their way in, all added to a growing determination to skedaddle.

After much hunting and disappointment we found The Place. Modern and easily maintained, its views framing sunrise and sunsets, quirky and bursting with light, it fitted like an old pair of jeans.

Moving here has meant catching up with friends and former colleagues, some from many years ago. It’s also meant delighting in the hospitality of the fortnightly Aperitif gatherings, now going for 10 years, and offering a wonderful chance to meet new people and make fresh friends in a different home each fortnight.

Nothing is perfect. The summer days when an unseen enemy, the bushfire, seems to be lurking over the horizon, make for anxiety, while the chill of winter bites hard.

Eclipsing the drawbacks is the sheer delight in walking the dog through the Wombat Gardens or around one of the lakes (a pleasure only slightly diluted by the number of fallen trees left in the water or sprawled in the bush). Then there are moments of magic: a visit from those alarm clocks and last-to-beds, the punk-haired kookaburras, the sailors’ gait of cockatoos, the swoop of black parrots and the old kangaroo who regularly maintains watch down at the corner. Or a solitary koala wandering home like a clubber after a night out, while nearby an echidna sneaks a peek before balling itself back up.

So, here we are and here we stay. And I haven’t even mentioned the bliss of restaurants and cafes, the oldfashioned ease in pubs, but I mustn’t say too much or everyone will want to come.

Volunteers needed for ANZAC 100 event

AVE you ever been an usher? Have you worked serving food or at a ticket desk? If the answer’s yes and you have the volunteering spirit, ANZAC 100, on April 11, needs you.

Daylesford Rotary’s Danny Moynihan is coordinating volunteers to help ANZAC 100 on the night when Daylesford honours the men and women who served in World War I. The free, one-off memorial event starts at the setting of the sun from 6pm. It will centre on the Daylesford Town Hall in Vincent Street and culminates with a memorial presentation honouring nine Daylesford firefighters who served in WWI, one of whom died on day one of the Gallipoli landings. Descendants of some of the servicemen being honoured will be attending.

Daylesford RSL Sub Branch president Ian Tinetti said the evening would make history in its own right, paying tribute to the Anzac centenary and all the families affected 100 years ago.

“I hope the whole district will turn up for this special event.

I know as we get on with our lives we forget about the people before us whose lives were turned upside down by a terrible war. ANZAC 100 provides a chance for all of us to stop a while to remember them and our region’s history. I think it will be a real eye opener, especially for the younger ones,” he said.

Immediately following the street commemoration a concert will start at 7.30pm in the town hall showcasing songs and music from both world wars, performed by Madam featuring Sallie Harvey, Jennie Brown, Nel Staite, Maureen Andrew, Danny Spooner, Graham Maxwell with the Daylesford Swing Band, Daylesford Municipal Band and Daylesford Pipes & Drums.

If you want to really get into the mood of the evening, come along dressed in wartime fashions. Prizes will be awarded to the best dressed on the evening.

Poppy project at Smith Street

hirley and Rose, pictured above, with a few other Smith Street residents, are among those throughout the region who have been busily crafting all manner of poppies for the ANZAC 100 event on April 11.

Knitted, crocheted and even painted poppies will adorn Vincent Street with every store offered a range of displays.

Maggie Nightingale and Sandy Breen hit the street last week and were “absolutely amazed with the 100 per cent support on offer”.

“Now we just need as many poppies as possible. So we want people to keep making them right up until the last day,” Maggie said.

“Then we can spread them out and go back and top them up.”

A workshop is being held at the Daylesford RSL today, Monday, March 30, from 2pm to 5pm.

All things potato at the Trentham Spudfest

RENTHAM is gearing up for The Great Trentham Spudfest.

Food, fun, live music, frivolity and spuds galore will be at the eighth annual spudfest on Saturday, May 2 at Quarry Street Reserve, Trentham – also known for the day as “The Spud Hub”.

The ‘Spud Hub’ will be alive with hot potatoes, hot art, hot music and fantastic entertainment for all the family to enjoy.

Singalong for nursing homes

AYLESFORD, Trentham and Creswick Hepburn Shire nursing home residents are singing along to all their favourite tunes thanks to a new music program developed for aged care by Daylesford resident Damon O’Donoghue.

The music programs were funded by donations from Daylesford District Community Bank and the Community Op Shop.

Mr O’Donoghue, pictured left, said the program, called iPlay Music, worked by scanning the popular pianola sing along rolls that so many parents and grandparents grew up with and loved.

“Once scanned, the resultant digital files have the lyrics added to them and synchronised so that when connected to a television they display in large type while changing colour in time to the music.

“The reality is that while pianolas are wonderful instruments when in working order, they are now of an age when they either work poorly or not at all. Repair and maintenance is expensive even if you can find someone to do the skilled work involved. “iPlay, however, is not only giving pleasure right now but is also ensuring the survival of music which may otherwise be lost.”

In love with Clunes

LUNES artist Karolina will hold a solo exhibition in The Esmond Gallery at The Warehouse in Clunes from April 12 to April 30.

Karolina said she was offered the chance to work in Switzerland but chose Australia to set up practice as a working artist.

She said she was exploring rural settings to create an alternative lifestyle property when she “chanced upon Clunes”.

A decade since her last solo exhibition, Karolina has drawn upon her journey to present works that embody the sense of her belonging to this community.

“The roses in Collins Place have a story to tell which I wanted to translate into pictures,” she said.

“In the long shadows of late afternoon, my restless heart led me to find what it was that made me fall in love with Clunes.

“I was drawn to Collins Place where passion echoed, as a silent chord from a by-gone era.

“Breathing the rich scent of roses, my head and my heart spoke an intimate conversation that exposed the honesty of vulnerability.

“In rapture, I turned to face the precinct.”

Esther Stewart exhibit

AYLESFORD artist Esther Stewart is holding an exhibition, Timeshare, at the Station Gallery in South Yarra until April 18.

Ms Stewart, a painter, recently had her works picked up by fashion label Valentino.

A member of the menswear team found her work in an online review and the collaboration went from there.

Her abstract forms, which use solid and bold blocks of colour, were fashioned into the fabric for the men’s fall/winter 2015/2016 collection.

And to top it all off, Ms Stewart found herself at Paris Fashion Week in January to see the final results.

Friendship formed

M

EGUMI Tsuzuki first arrived in Daylesford eight years ago on a working holiday.

Her destination was Shizuka Ryokan, a Japanese-style hotel in Hepburn Springs.

Megumi’s trip turned out to be a life-changer and for the past four years, as the owner of the Bellevue English School in Tokyo with her husband Hajime, she is now a regular visitor.

Megumi and Hajime, and a handful of students, come to Australia about twice a year and head straight to Daylesford.

Helping in that decision is the friendship of a group of locals, led by Lena Mezza, who saw and acted on a handwritten note on a community noticeboard asking for friendship for the little group.

Megumi said she felt from that first visit that the people were “very nice and they welcomed me”.

“I felt I could enjoy myself and have precious time here and widen my view. Then I met my friend Lena and she takes care of me.

“And now I own my school with my husband and we come with the students because the people here welcome us. We can enjoy having time here in English, it is the best location. We only have a week’s holiday so we come straight here and have a couple of days in Melbourne.

“I feel Victoria is the best place in Australia. We tell people at home about Daylesford too.”

Hajime, who spent his teenage years living in America, said he was “shocked” when he arrived in Daylesford “because not only is everyone friendly they talk to you like an equal”.

“No matter how good your English is they talk to you as a friend.

“In America I had to practise my English under very strong pressure – I always had to fight to get better because the Americans are not as friendly until you get to really know them.

“I feel more nervous about taking my students to America because I don’t want them to lose their confidence. I really like it here, it’s a beautiful country.”

Kei Hirata, Yui Okaba and Riho Yabawa were experiencing their first trip to Australia and had enjoyed horse riding at Boomerang Ranch in Daylesford.

They liked most that “everyone is so friendly”, “everyone is so nice” and “the view is very beautiful”.

They also liked hot chocolate – but weren’t too keen, like most of us, on the wasps.

New scultpure and gallery destination in Blampied

A

NYONE driving through Blampied has been watching as a host of sculptures has been steadily appearing just opposite the Swiss Mountain Hotel.

Now it’s time to stop and wander inside this treasure trove of artworks.

David Dawson has moved Overwrought from Daylesford – and created a beautiful setting for his many works – along with a gallery to showcase other local artists.

Out in the Sculpture Garden there are custom design gates, metal wall art, outdoor garden furniture and benches, laser cut privacy and garden screens, bespoke signs, garden art and sculpture.

And with the extra space of the “paddock” as he calls it, David can finally feature his larger pieces – and is also creating mini gardens so people can get a real sense of what one of his amazing sculptures can bring to their homes. It’s a real destination – and unlike many – there’s been thought put into parking spaces and a turning circle for buses, caravans and cars with trailers – ready to take away his work.

“I have had people coming in saying ‘oh, you’re finally opening a retail space’ who don’t realise we have been trading in Daylesford for five years.”

David said the gallery was also important because there were so few places where local artists of all mediums could display and sell their work.

“I think a lot of people see art as inaccessible – but it’s not. We have Lyn Cooke’s work, incredibly beautiful watercolours of Australian native birds, wrens, cockatoos, finches…original works selling for about $300. I want people to be able to come here, wander around the garden and then take something home that is truly unique and affordable.

“And I want them to be able to take a story away too. They discover the artist’s profile and take home a piece that also has memories with it. So they go home with the whole association – not just the artwork. A really positive and happy memory for them.”

David, who just opened the space in February, said he also wanted to thank his neighbours for their support of his latest project.

“They have been so incredibly welcoming and supportive. I have been really blown away. They have all dropped in to say hello and how excited they are to see something happening here. It’s a great area.”

Loving Daylesford

UST Sayin’s in the last edition of The Local by editor Donna Kelly brought back some horrible memories for my partner, Theo and myself.

When we first got together 33 years ago we were living in a country town in the western district. It was the horrible experiences we endured that actually guided us to beautiful Daylesford.

In the country town we would often receive threatening phone calls, have people calling insulting words in the middle of the night and even eggs smashed on our shop window. We had a florist and gift store and employed three girls. The girls would often tell us to go and clean off the horrible words scrawled in the dust on our panel van.

We carried on trying to ignore all this until one Sunday evening Theo returned from work and was in a horrible mood. I tried all ways of trying to get him to tell me what was wrong and it was almost 10 pm when I said I could not cope any longer with his mood. You can never imagine the feeling of pain I had when he told me seven (or was it eight) young men came into the shop and threatened him if we did not leave town.

He had been verbally abused with dreadful frightening threats. I stood there in shock as he exclaimed how scared he felt.

This incident upset Theo for a long, long time. I cannot begin to imagine how frightened he felt. Even the thought of three people abusing a person is bad enough, but not seven or eight.

I had a friend who was trying to sell his florist shop in Port Melbourne. I picked up the phone and dialled his home number and asked ‘Michael is your shop still

for sale?” When he said it had not sold I yelled at the top of my voice “we will buy it”.

After five years in Melbourne (we didn’t like it) we purchased a property in Perrins Street, Daylesford and we started The Balconies Bed and Breakfast.

We planted a beautiful garden at The Balconies.

Even though we no longer own the property, I take great pleasure driving past and admiring the park-like gardens. For just on 10 years we enjoyed the bed and breakfast. We made several long term friends and were sorry to sell. I was getting older and knew we could not maintain the garden to the high standard. I looked after the garden and Theo was often seen cutting the lawns on his favorite toy - the ride-on mower. He actually tipped himself and the mower into one of the ornamental lakes one day.

We were two of the organisers of the first ChillOut held at The Old Winery at Muskvale. I received three phone calls (no they did not give their names) telling me they did not want “any more people like us coming to the town”. One local businessman even told me in the street one day just what he thought of people like us.

About 500 people attended the first ChillOut and we thought it a huge crowd. At the first ChillOut we collected accommodation brochures and went all out to make a fantastic “Come and Stay in Daylesford”.

Three accommodation houses refused to give me brochures and said they wanted no association with the event. Two nasty phone calls the following year and the third year the phone calls increased, but they were wanting to know where they could get “one of those flags with all the colours”. How the tables turned when the dollar signs appeared.

Although at 76 on April 6 I did not do much this ChillOut, I had a huge feeling of pride on the holiday weekend when I stood out front of our shop (Finishing

Touch Decor) and watched the huge number of people watching the parade. I said to Theo “don’t you feel proud when you think of the money pumped into the economy of Daylesford-Hepburn Springs because of ChillOut?”. I am so proud I did not crawl into a shell with negative comments I received 17 years ago.

During our time in Daylesford we have made more friends than we imagined possible. We have a wide circle of friends - gay, straight or whatever as Theo says, and we would never want to live anywhere else but in this beautiful town.

We have both endured some illnesses over the years and the kindness from the whole community overwhelmed us. I recall when we owned The Balconies and I had been in hospital for some time and three women, with whom I worked at the Daylesford Information Centre said they were organising a working bee to help in our garden. Not one of these people was gay. I was very touched by this and thanked them but said we were about to employ a gardener until I was well enough to resume gardening duties.

Being gay can be tough at times. But, as my daughter recently told me “dad, you were born that way and you can’t change it”.

Moving to Daylesford has given Theo and I the best chapter of our life and we intend to stay here until we go over the rainbow.

Our business has just been sold to a lovely couple Jacqui and Robert of Port Macquarie. They have asked Theo to stay on and look after the shop until their properties are sold. We hope you will come into the shop and give them a big, big warm welcome to this wonderful town.

Wombat Park Open Garden

OMBAT Park will hold an open garden in May.

The story of Wombat Park started in 1854 when grazier William Stanbridge built a modest timber homestead and began planting a magnificent garden and a collection of exotic trees that was to be described as “superior to any that can be seen in any private or public garden in Victoria”, according to the local newspaper of the day.

His extensive and varied garden, characterised by what are now breath-taking specimens, is one of the jewels in the crown of Victoria’s garden heritage.

Stanbridge was a Member of the Legislative Assembly who became wealthy from gold and by 1860 had built a brick stable and coach house complex. Twelve years later a second homestead was built – it was relocated to Daylesford in the 1930s. In 1910, his daughter Florence Cox and her husband built the current homestead in the Arts and Crafts style of the era.

The long, romantic elm avenue dates from this time, as does the famous crenellated tapestry hedge, the largest and oldest in the country. Both of these are listed on the National Trust Register of Significant Trees.

The Mackenzie family took on a wild and beautiful place in 1996. Since then, Isabel Mackenzie, with gardener Stewart Henderson, has overseen and implemented the steady restoration of the structure of the whole garden while lovingly preserving a unique past.

All proceeds from the opening will support the restoration of the historic Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens in Daylesford with the Friends of Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens offering home-made cakes, tea, a gourmet barbeque, wine, coffee and a range of plants for sale from Lambley Nursery.

As well, Paul Bangay will be on site to sign copies of Stuart Rattle’s Musk Farm with all royalties from sales going to the Friends of Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens Wombat Hill is on the Midland Highway, and open on May 2 and 3 from 10am to 4pm. Tickets are $10 with children free.

HE Chamber Philharmonia Cologne’s concert at the Anglican Christ Church in Daylesford on February 27, part of their annual Australian tour, was an outstanding success.

A well-thought out program, delivered with great skill by soloists and ensemble, guaranteed a complete performance.

The dramatic events outside the venue - a mini tornado - provided a backdrop for Vivaldi’s “Winter” concerto from the “Four Seasons”.

Violin soloist Sergey Didorenko gave a nuanced performance ranging from mysterious foreboding to the powerfully dramatic. The dynamic control of the ensemble and precision teamwork kept the tension building to the climaxes.

It was similar with Vivaldi’s ‘cello concerto in Am where soloist Dmitri Gornovsky blended powerful technique and great lyricism. The contrasts were suitably shaped and precise ensemble work was always evident.

Didorenko’s outstanding technique and musicianship helped in a breathtaking performance of Sarasate’s “Carmen Fantasy”, one of the most technically challenging pieces in the violin repertoire.

Clarinettist Roman Kushniarou delivered an elegant and committed reading of Mozart’s concerto. With the small ensemble the focus was on the soloist, who produced a glorious singing tone and clear sense of phrasing.

As with the rest of the musicians there was always a feeling of great enjoyment in performing this program.

HE Zelman Symphony Orchestra presented another delightful and entertaining concert at the Daylesford Town Hall on March 22.

Conductor Marl Shiell continues to organise quality programs with excellent soloists. Weber, Strauss and Brahms gave the afternoon a Teutonic feel, with a premiere Australian work commemorating the centenary of Gallipoli.

The popular overture to Weber’s final opera “Oberon” opened the proceedings in a solid manner, preparing the audience for the colourful orchestration which would follow. The rhythmic energy was well maintained, while the French Horns began what was to be a prominent part in the concert.

The premiere performance of “A Song for Gallipoli” by Australian composer George Dreyfus added to the growing list of new works for this important year.

Mezzo soprano Selena Pettifer brought out the pathos and tragedy of the text of Charles Hamilton Sorley, with the orchestra providing the tension and drama in a powerful statement.

Roman Ponomariov was outstanding as the soloist in the first Horn Concerto of Richard Strauss. He is a master of this challenging instrument, maintaining a glorious tone throughout and shaping the narrative in a purposeful way.

The dialogue with the orchestra was always clear although the ‘cello and clarinet solo lines could have been projected better. The Mozart encore completed a fine performance.

The Brahms First Symphony, a significant work by any standards, reached great heights in this performance. The harmonic tensions were fully explored and every section of the orchestra played its part.

While comparisons will always be drawn with Beethoven this work stands as a post Beethoven masterpiece, with greater demands on the musicians technically and musically. The result was an outstanding success.

Spa Centre Meats embracing the future

T’S a big year for Matthew and Courtney Layfield.

Firstly, they just got married on Labour Day weekend in Byron Bay. Secondly, the couple are in the process of rebranding the already popular Spa Centre Meats in Vincent Street, Daylesford.

Matthew’s father Ronnie has had the business since 1994 but most of focus has been on the wholesale side of things, providing meat to Melbourne’s restaurants, butchers and supermarkets along with most of those in Daylesford and the Macedon region.

So, if you have been dining out and loving your meat-based meals, you’re most likely already enjoying the products created by Spa Centre Meats.

Matthew said he had started his apprenticeship at the Vincent Street store when he was only 16 years old and then quickly moved into the wholesale business with his father. But he has always been keen to place significant focus on “the customers and our local community”, and with family roots all the way back to the first Swiss Italian settlers he understands how lucky we are to be able to call this region home.

“Over the next six months our customers will notice us week-on-week introducing new tasty products, such as take home meals but more so increasing our variety. Spa Centre Meats won’t just be a place where you find meat, it will include an assortment of products to highlight our many local producers - which is what people expect from their butcher these days.

“We have been going to a variety of farmers’ markets around the region lately, seeing who is producing the best product but most of all identifying what people want from their region. We already produce our lamb and beef from our family farm located in the valley of Green Hill, near Malmsbury - Green Hills Natural’, which we specially dry age in store. Our free range chickens come from Inglewood and our female pork from the Beaumont Family of Ballarat, as well as supporting other local businesses such as Istra smallgoods and the exclusive Sher Wagyu beef of Ballan, that will be available in store as of Easter Saturday. We ensure that we buy everything locally.”

Matthew said he was also aspiring to build on the strong working relationships already developed with the region’s top chefs to create a monthly in-store seasonal recipe. This recipe is to highlight a true paddock to plate experience, in which customers are able to purchase and then create at home. This process ensures that the best knowledge from within the region exists within our homes.

“We also want to work more with the community, as we have a great product and really aspire to being the local family butcher.”

Matthew said with plans of a revamp and introduction of new products within six months Spa Centre Meats would look brand new!

“We have a great hard working team with Brent and Paul at the helm, who are keen to be part of the changes, and the future holds a great opportunity for us to employ even more locals.

“We already have the great product, it is time to let everyone see what we are doing.”

Divorce parties helping to let go of pain And forget champagne and disco music – separation, closure or divorce ceremonies are emotionally charged events based on the idea of letting go and moving on. As Daylesford/Macedon based qualified wedding celebrant Genevieve Messenger explains, the rituals can take many interesting and varied forms.

“I did a divorce ceremony with a bunch of stand-up comedians once, that was hilarious. I won’t mention their names, but it was funny and sad at the same time.

“One was so mad at her ex-husband so she stood up in the middle of the circle and pretended he was there and screamed at him and everyone laughed. She had a tantrum, and when she got that out of her system we went around the circle and everyone said what they needed to let go of in their life in order to let go.”

It is far from the drunken celebratory experiences being widely – and sensationally - reported as local celebrant Jen Lawrie-Smith explains. Having a university qualification, a graduate diploma in Civil Ceremonies which included studying divorce rituals, she has incorporated “letting go of divorce” into other ceremonies such as Change of Solstice.

“It’s a very private thing, people often don’t want to publicise having a ‘party’ because it can be seen as disrespectful to the other side, or sending the wrong message to children. The Winter Solstice rite celebrates the longest night and in part, it can be quite a private ceremony for people who have been holding onto things that have distressed them in the past year. It’s a chance to write those things down for example on a piece of paper, and throw it into a fire. For some people it’s a private way of letting go of something that is quite hurtful, such as a divorce.”

Meanwhile, Ms Messenger also performed a ceremony for a lady still suffering 20 years after her marriage breakdown.

“She felt that she hadn’t let go of the pain around it. She was stuck. We had to find a symbol for the past and put it in one corner, and then we had to get into a feeling and a space of neutrality where it was like an empty canvas where there was a world of possibility, and then we had to have a symbol for who she wanted

“I see a lot of people who have been married once in this community who swear they’re never going to be with someone again because they’re just so hurt by the past; and they’re the kind of people that need this ceremony.

“They deserve a second chance at love.”

Message from the Mayor As the sun goes down on Saturday 11th April, we will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to commemorate the centenary of the Gallipoli conflict from 6pm at Daylesford Town Hall.

ANZAC 100 begins with a moving outdoor ceremony honouring the many young local men, women and families affected by World War I and everyone is welcome to attend, residents and visitors alike.

The ANZAC legend was born at Gallipoli and it has defined Australia’s character in the century since. Without hesitation, young Australians and New Zealanders from all walks of life joined up to fight in a horrifying war. During the course of WWI, about 39 per cent of Australia’s male population aged between 18 and 44 enlisted. Sadly, our casualty rate was among the highest.

Yet the ANZAC’s strength, courage and endurance in the face of great adversity gave our young nation a proud identity and founded a belief that all people are worthy of respect, no matter their background.

Young people from our Shire were just as enthusiastic in heeding the call. At that time, everyone in the district knew someone who had headed overseas to war, whether family members, workmates, friends, newly-weds or betrothed sweethearts.

Being present at our ANZAC 100 tribute will give us all pause to imagine how life felt at that time.

It’s almost impossible for many of us today to understand the emotional upheavals and sacrifices made in those days so I urge you to take a break from your usual Saturday evening routine and immerse yourself and family in this special occasion.

A free street ceremony aims to take us all back to the time when the names on today’s honour rolls were ordinary people going about their daily lives. Part of the evening’s programme sees nine Daylesford CFA firefighters who also volunteered into the armed forces, remembered with a plaque presentation to the RSL and CFA. The ceremony finishes at 7.30pm, followed by a concert in Daylesford Town Hall.

OOPER Harwood is 13 and has just been announced the joint winner of MITCH junior musician of 2014. MITCH (Music in the Central Highlands) is a registered not-for-profit organisation focused on identifying and nurturing the musical talent that resides within the central highlands region. Cooper stopped for a chat with Kyle Barnes.

KB: Tell us a bit about yourself.

CH: I am 13 years old and in Year 7 at Ballarat Grammar on music and academic scholarships. I love playing any sport. I play cricket and am a member of Little Athletics Ballarat. I don’t really have spare time these days so my hobby of model aeroplane making has all but ceased to exist (I had a fascination with WW2 fighter planes).

KB: When did you become a musician?

CH: I actually stumbled across playing piano at a relative’s house. I was tinkling on the ivories and my aunt said that she would teach me a piece in the time we were there. So she taught me the first bit and told me that if I practised for the rest of the day I would have it in my mind so I could learn another bit the following day. I learned the small part in minutes, and asked to be taught the rest. I picked it up so quickly that I had finished the piece and was playing it fluently within the hour. My aunt then turned to my mother and said, “You have to get him lessons”. So I started lessons with Mr Bron Sozanski about four years ago. He is a fantastic teacher and keeps me playing multiple styles. He holds concert classes and workshops to give you the skills necessary to play your piano pieces with confidence and pride.

KB: Wow, what do you play?

CH: I play many styles of music including jazz, classical, modern and more recently I’ve gotten into the habit of playing quirky music. Which somewhat annoys my family. I love any style of music. Music to me is anything you can enjoy listening to without instantly wanting to turn it off. I can relate to most music. I especially enjoy the different expressions in mood and circumstance that music provides. I spend a fair bit of time each day practising my piano as well as my piano lessons at school with Mr Sozanski. But that time is now competing with homework, cricket, athletics and travel time to and from school.

KB: What do you like listening to when you get time?

CH: I like listening to anything really. I like listening to old and new music from Mozart and Beethoven to Sia and Maroon 5.

KB: What did winning the MITCH award mean to you?

CH: Winning the award at MITCH was surprising and fantastic. It was judged by the committee of MITCH. To me this means that I presented well on that particular occasion, played my pieces well, and my passion for piano came across to the audience. I think that the most important thing in performance is having a relaxed attitude, and a good stage presence. You need to play well, another important part is when you introduce your pieces, you have to allow the audience to see the meaning behind the words you are speaking, allow them to be at ease and genuinely enjoy the performance.

KB: Great answer. Finally, where will your music take you and when can we hear you next?

CH: I hope that my music takes me somewhere where I can bring pleasure to any audience. I think there will always be some form of piano or music in general in my life. The next time I will be playing in public is when I am competing at the Bendigo Eisteddfod on May 2 and 3, at the Hamilton Eisteddfod on June 1 and at the Royal South Street Eisteddfod in Ballarat sometime in August.

MITCH will hold its Autumn Concert on Saturday, April 19. “The Next Generation” will be held at Braemar College at Mount Macedon from 2pm.

The rocking horse is named Sandy, after the only Light Horse to return from the battlefields after the Great War. Friends of the Avenue’s Julie Baulch said the Kingston Avenue of Honour was one of the few avenues in Australia that also recognised the nurses who fought for our country.

“The avenue’s restoration has been a long and ongoing process but funds raised each year ensure that we’ll be well prepared for our 100th anniversary in 2018.

“A commemorative event will be held on Remembrance Day 2018.”

Ms Baulch said Sandy had been handcrafted locally and was kitted out with a handmade saddle, bridle and swag in the colours of the 9th/19 Battalion from World War 1, which included many locals.

“This beautifully crafted rocking horse is designed to become a family heirloom and to last generations. We have the same hope for the Kingston Avenue of Honour,” Ms Baulch said.

Tickets are $2 and available at the Creswick Pharmacy, the Creswick information Centre, Horse Land Ballarat and the Smeaton Hotel. Sandy will be on display at the Creswick Market on April 18.

The winner will be drawn on Anzac Day in Creswick after the Light Horse Parade at 3pm.

‘Young, rural garden’ open for Easter

ACK Lake, an extensive young rural garden at Scotsburn, 20 minutes south of Ballarat at the foot of Mount Buninyong, will be open to the public on April 4 and 5.

Anne and Berry King are retired architects and farmers and have designed both the house and surrounding landscape as one project to produce a cohesive whole.

They moved from South Gippsland to the Scotsburn area in 2008 and into the rammed earth house, right, in March 2010. The starting point was an irregular 20acre paddock, including 10 acres of lake, red volcanic soil, rocks, very strong winds and some frosts.

The previous owner had done some planting mostly of Eucalyptus globulus and Acacia melanoxylon on boundary lines but much of this had been chewed back to sticks by the cattle. About forty-five acres are leased to a neighbour for grazing and the lake is leased to the Millbrook Trout School. The bird life on and around the water is prolific with some ninety species recorded. A walk around the lake reveals imposing views of Mount Buninyong.

Sources of inspiration and ideas included the Botanic Gardens at Cranbourne and some early discussions with sculptor and landscaper Mel Ogden.

Old cattle yards and some large old cypress and pine trees on the north side of the lake were removed in 2008 and the curving rows of eucalypts and acacias planted above the ‘meadow’ which is now mown in stripes. Anne and Berry engaged outside assistance with the major earthworks and rock placement, and with labour for concrete block garden walls, planting of advanced trees and laying of large concrete pavers and turf. However, the dry-stone walls, ponds, most mulching, gravel spreading, raised vegetable beds and general planting were all the fruits of their own labours.

Back Lake is at 264 Wiggins Road, Scotsburn and open on both days from 10am to 4.30pm. Entry is $10 with those under 18 free. The garden supports the Friends of Buninyong Botanic Gardens.

ICHELLE Jones and Colin Binks are keen to make their latest venture, Breakfast & Beer, more family oriented and open to the community.

The pair, with backgrounds respectively in environmental science and civil construction, took over earlier this year and are keen to stamp their own mark on the beautiful two-storey building in Vincent Street South, Daylesford.

Michelle said having children herself, she was keen to have more families enjoying the space, while Colin is already thinking about a “men’s kitchen” to create a space for blokes to come, learn a bit about cooking and just sit back and chill.

But the basics will stay the same with the use of all local produce available, along with a bit from Colin’s home vegie patch. And there are still those great nights from Friday to Sunday with Friday now officially ‘pie night’ and Sunday ‘pizza night’. Colin has always loved cooking, wanted to be a chef when he left school, and is now able to indulge his passion with a range of pies – and other ad hoc items.

“We are really just putting our own touch on the menu. It makes it more ‘us’ and if we are comfortable with what we are serving then others will enjoy it too. I have wanted to open a café for a long time now and this was a great opportunity. We love the atmosphere here and the building already has its own life – we want to add to that.”

Colin, who is fifth generation to the area, has returned from working in Western Australia, and clearly loving his new role.

“We just want people to come and enjoy our food and enjoy our company. It really is just an extension of our lounge room. And we love that it is a bit different, it has its own life. We want to match that. And I have always had fun cooking at home – I do dinner parties and long table lunches for up to 40 people at Christmas.”

Then there’s the more than 70 beers available – with Colin keen to hear from anyone who wants another beer on the menu. Plus wine and cider – and great coffee.

Meanwhile, as part of her being keen to join the community, Michelle is hoping to offer the upstairs area as a place for a craft group or perhaps art classes “something creative”. In fact, the couple already has their own photos on the walls for sale.

“We are really keen for the Breakfast and Beer to become a community hub.”

OR accomplished actor and writer Christopher Milne, the talents of a regional theatre company has been the inspiration to pen his first play. Kyneton, Darling! premiered at the Red Brick Hall in Kyneton in March.

Moving to Kyneton four years ago, Mr Milne was immediately drawn to the Kyneton Theatre Company. “I was really impressed by the level of talent within the company,” Mr Milne said.

“I wanted to work with them, and perhaps in some way help with the efforts to reopen The Bluestone Theatre.”

Often, the cost of staging a traditional play far outweighs the revenue the play will create. Regional theatres frequently return to the tried-and-true plays, however the cost of running these plays is a huge burden for small companies. Apart from buying the rights to the play, the costs of costumes, lighting and set production and venue hire can put regional theatre companies at risk of closing.

With this in mind, Mr Milne set about writing a play that was relevant, interesting and worked with the strengths within the Kyneton Theatre Company. By using a contemporary setting, there have been no costume costs as actors all wore clothes they already owned. In fact the only external costs were lighting and the hall hire.

Kyneton, Darling! is set in a church hall, so the set is essentially the Red Brick Hall itself, further reducing overheads for the production. This helped the audience to feel they were actually part of the action. Actors made their entrances through the audience and the stage is very low, adding to the intimate nature of the performance.

Mr Milne has credentials as a scriptwriter for well-known TV series Neighbours and Prisoner and has relished this new, more hands-on role. He was involved in the casting, and worked alongside producer/director Fran Kelly. “Working in TV, you really write the script and hand it over. Here I was able to work with the actors and help a bit with direction. It was a very different experience.”

Regional theatre companies are great at nurturing aspiring actors and helping them refine their craft, but with this approach, they could also be the launching pad for new writers. Mr Milne hopes the success of Kyneton, Darling! will encourage other aspiring playwrights to pen their own works, both locally and in other regional theatre companies. “I feel like I’ve accomplished something that I’ve wanted to do for a while. It’s inspired me to write more.”

The spiritual home of the Kyneton Theatre Company, the Bluestone Theatre, is currently undergoing renovations. The Bluestone Theatre has been closed for almost four years following safety concerns. It is due to be functional again by August this year for Kyneton’s 59th Festival of One Act Plays.

Play focuses on asylum seekers

YNETON writer Ian Robinson could be compared to Guy Fawkes. Both wanted to blow up Parliament House. But Ian, Robbo to anyone who knows him, is using words and not gunpowder.

“We want an explosion of moral indignation,” says Robbo about his play The Process which launched its Canberra season on March 25 after a highly praised world premiere at La Mama in Melbourne.

In its review, the website Stage Whispers said the play “coherently shines a bright light on the outrageously inhumane way we, as a nation, are dealing with asylum seekers”.

The play looks at the plight of an “illegal immigrant”. Despite the horror and loss he has experienced the asylum seeker believes his rights will be upheld in Australia.

But the response of the Immigration Minister is to hurl forth all the gobbledygook we saw and heard about the secrecy of on-water activities and the excising of various bits of the nation.

Meanwhile there are at least 30 (at the last count) asylum seekers still languishing in detention centres indefinitely because of negative security reports about them that they are not allowed to see, so they are unable to challenge.

“This reminded me of the plight of the hero K in the novel The Trial by Franz Kafka, and I discovered that its name in German is Der Process,” says Robbo. “K is arrested and prosecuted by a remote, inaccessible authority, but the nature of his ‘crime’ is never revealed.”

Robbo set out to explore the asylum seeker policies of two successive governments and tells the story of one representative refugee caught up in the immigration process, not by using realism, but through satire and the literary devices of exaggeration, distortion, condensation and irony.

“In this way I am able to present a picture of reality that is a faithful recreation of the underlying truth about this iniquitous system, giving audiences a chance to glimpse actual events and people.”

“Although the audience is moved to laughter most of the time by the absurdity of the process, there are moments of truth when they don’t know whether to laugh or cry.”

It is planned to tour The Process in Central Victoria later in the year.

He won first prize in the 2006 National Playwright Competition with a one-act play The Fountain of Love, which was later performed at the Hepburn Springs Swiss-Italian Festival.

He worked for many years in the Curriculum Branch of the Education Department, and has been a writer and theatre critic for a wide range of papers and magazines.

His wife, Logie award-winning actress Maggie Millar, is assistant director of The Process.

For me, a lover of all things pasta, I choose the pan-fried ricotta and parsley

Bendigo Queer Film Festival in its 12th year

HE Bendigo Queer Film Festival is the longest continuously running regional queer film and arts festival in Australia – and now in its 12th year.

The festival showcases and celebrates rural queer culture and promoting the GLBTI community.

The event includes the Queer Country Art Exhibition from April 10 to 19, at Dudley House, 60 View Street, Bendigo, the festival opening night on April 17 at the Star Cinema at Eaglehawk, the film festival over April 18 and 19 at La Trobe Visual Arts Centre and the BQFF Patrons’ Breakfast on April 19 at the Capital Theatre, Banquet Room.

The Queer Country Art Exhibition will exhibit selected art works which display the talent from queer rural artists prior to and during the festival. Opening night on April 10 at 6pm is a free event.

Opening night of the Bendigo Queer Film Festival will be spectacular as the facade of the historic Eaglehawk Town Hall, now the Star Cinema, turns pink.

The opening night film is “I Feel Like Disco” and the joint will be jumping with surprise entertainment and a glass of complimentary bubbly on entry. Doors open at 6.30pm. Tickets are $30/$27concession.

Bendigo Queer Film Festival continues on Saturday and Sunday at the newly upgraded La Trobe Visual Arts Centre theatrette with a brilliant selection of films made locally and internationally, which promise to enlighten, challenge, empower and surprise. See website for details.

On Sunday morning the BQFF Patrons Breakfast takes place at the Capital Theatre with special guest patron Christine Nixon who will be speaking about her role in changing the culture of the Victorian Police force to become more accepting and supportive of the GLBTI community. From small beginnings in 2004 the Bendigo Queer Film Festival continues to grow and boasts the screening of 204 films over the past 11 years. New leaders at Probus

HE Probus Club of Daylesford held its annual general meeting earlier this month with the election of new office bearers and committee members.

President is Halcyon Bell, senior vice president is Ted Goodwin, junior vice president is Betty Neumann, secretary is Susan Priest, treasurer is Bev Ryan and immediate past president is Joan Rattray. Committee members are Anne Bremner, Dot Bull, Ian Seeley and Lois Voterakis.

Mr Goodwin said Probus was an association with a basic purpose to advance intellectual and cultural interests among adult persons, to provide regular opportunities to progress healthy minds and active bodies, through social interaction and activities.

Membership is open to retired and senior members of the community looking for the friendship, fellowship and fun that Probus has to offer.

If you are like me, you are frustrated by the plethora of insects and bugs who delight in sucking and/or chewing the life out of your plants but refuse to use any form of chemical preparation to stop them.

There are many useful sprays to be made from herbs as insecticides and deterrents.

Many like rue and catmint, when dried and sprinkled in cupboards and drawers, will deter ants, moths and other pests.

You may like to add one or all of the following home-made preparations to your armoury.

Insecticides Eucalyptus spray - for aphis and other small sucking insects Cut up 1.5kg of eucalyptus leaves and boil them in 3.5 litres of water for 30 minutes. Allow them to cool, then mix 125g of soft soap in 2.5 litres of hot water.

When cool, strain and bottle the mixture. Use it at the rate of 250ml per 2 litres of water. The soap will act as a “wetting agent”, helping the spray to spread and remain on the foliage and stems.

Garlic spray - also for small insect pests.

Chop up and mix 90g of garlic cloves with 2 teaspoons of liquid paraffin. Soak for 48 hours, then add 600ml of warm water and 15g of good, oil-based soap.

Store in a sealed bottle and use at the rate of 25ml per litre of water.

Rhubarb spray - another one for small insects.

Bordeaux mixture - excellent for most fungous diseases.

Stir 90g of copper sulphate into 5 litres of hot water and allow to cool overnight. Next day, mix 125g of garden lime with 4 litres of cold water. Mix both liquids together and strain before using immediately at the rate of 250ml per 2 litres of water. Although most of these remedies will store long enough to use throughout the season, the bordeaux mix should be used within a few days of preparation.

Chive tea - for scab and mildew Use dried chives. Do not boil, but pour 500ml of boiling water over 50g of dried chives and allow to infuse for at least an hour. Strain the mixture through a nylon stocking and bottle. Use at the rate of one part of spray to two parts of water.

You can kill or, at least, repel a whole range of household pests using nothing more than the dried foliage of commonly grown garden herbs and flowers. Try: ants - catmint, garlic, mint, pennyroyal, spearmint, southernwood, tansy aphids - orange nasturtium, spearmint, southernwood, pyrethrum cabbage moth - dill, hyssop, mint, oregano, rosemary, sage, southernwood,tansy fleas - fennel, pennyroyal, spearmint, tansy, wormwood flies - basil, eau de cologne mint, pyrethrum, rue tansy, wormwood fruit fly - basil, southernwood, tansy mice - spearmint, wormwood mosquitoes - pennyroyal, southernwood, tansy, wormwood moths - mint, pennyroyal, sage, southernwood, spearmint, thyme, wormwood slugs - wormwood thrips - pyrethrum

ULLARTO’S Mark Cowie has taken out Best in Show at the Woodend Lions Art Show for his iron sculpture Somewhere out in the Universe.

Woodend Lions Art Show raises $10,000

Second Best in Show was awarded to Deborah Mullins for her fine art photograph Summer Tourists. Potter Tony Barnes won the 3D category, Anneka Hoekstra won Photography, Caroliza Job took out the Local Artist prize and the People’s Choice vote went to Gisborne painter Helen Cottle.

In the junior section overall prizes went to Megan Godfrey and Eliza Rose-Coburn.

Macedon Ranges Art Trail manager Nadine Hartnett said this year’s success, with $10,000 raised and 75 works sold, augured well for the event’s growth and proved how powerful community partnerships could be.

“We were confident that it would be a strong show but never anticipated so many sales. The tremendous positive feedback about the artwork and its presentation will drive us forward,” Ms Hartnett said.

“This is primarily about making good things happen in our community. It also provides artists of all standards with excellent exposure to the public and a venue to exhibit and sell their work.”

The Lions will use the money raised to fund school scholarships, support people in need, contribute to medical research and young individual endeavours, and, if necessary, to offer aid after natural disasters.

Sanae Services for onsite wastewater treatment system in central highlands

OOS Hulst has started Sanae Services which will provide inspection and maintenance services for onsite wastewater treatment systems in the central highlands.

Mr Hulst said Sanae Services offered a range of options including periodical inspection and reporting of onsite wastewater treatment systems, supervision of sludge removal by a sludge removal contractor, troubleshooting and corrective action, replacement of defective mechanical equipment such as pumps and aeration compressors.

Koos also wants to perform the once-off inspections of septic systems on behalf of the council, as this will become mandatory for all residents in nonsewered precincts.

Mr Hulst has 15 years’ experience in the design, engineering, construction, commissioning and start-up of biological treatment systems for industrial wastewater.

“When I became unemployed in November 2013 and wasn’t able to find work in project management / project engineering, I thought ‘if nobody wants to hire me, I’ll create my own work’.

“My mission is now to build a base of 2000 satisfied clients by the year 2020 in the shires of Hepburn, Mt Alexander, Mt Macedon, Moorabool and the City of Ballarat.

“We will achieve this by respecting the customer’s needs at all times, having excellent relationships with the shire’s environmental health officers and the manufacturers of onsite wastewater treatment systems.

Glen Armstrong liberating shapes

IT ALL started back in the 90s when I decided to make a toy that my kids couldn’t destroy,” recalls Hepburn artist Glen Armstrong.

His kids are grown up now but the little scuffed, hotrod, retired and gathering dust, is still intact. In the 20 odd years since Glen built it, the little car has survived being tossed down cliffs, run over by a water truck and towed across the West Gate Bridge.

What started out for Glen as “making unbreakable toys for unbreakable kids” has developed into a unique sculpture practice. His machines are a combination of outlaw hotrod fetish and intricate metal craft in miniature, taking months to build.

Glen is a largely self-taught craftsman with long experience as a black smith, welder and metal fabricator. In an art career spanning three decades he has applied those skills building installations at a host of arts events and venues from Moomba and the Rainbow Festival to Werribee Park Zoo. While he is interested in the look of 50s open wheeler race cars, speedway and drag bikes he is not trying to work to any scale and they are not copies of existing vehicles.

“I don’t call them models, I call them sculptures, because I’m not trying to make accurate reproductions. If you do the measurements they’re all wrong, they’re lower and longer. That’s what makes them look good; they’re exaggerated.”

His aesthetic has developed along with his fascination with the curves, sweeps and bends found in mid twentieth century industrial design. While such forms were once common throughout the country, these items are becoming increasingly rare today.

In order to gather enough material to work with Glen has to search decadesold scrap heaps or ancient car burial grounds hidden far off in the forest. It is impossible to produce them assembly line fashion because the components, every sweep and arc, are found objects crafted to individual works.

“Luckily there’s always someone that says ‘Oh, I have a box of stuff you might like’. When that happens you get inspired and bounce from idea to idea.”

To most people, a pile of scrap, or a clutch of abandoned cars is nothing more than refuse and few can imagine what potential lies within waste thrown away many years ago. But Glen doesn’t see rubbish, rather an array of shapes waiting to be liberated, cut out and adapted to something new.

“What at first appears to be nothing more than a rusty bumper bar, broken chair or twisted sheet metal is actually a shape ready to be freed from its exile to become art.”
