Local Lines A life well lived
Some people never see that death is coming Like some unwelcome guest who crashes in Their mortgage isn’t paid or assets sorted They have not travelled, climbed those distant hills But those who saw the signs way back in time Those warnings when their parents left this life Death now becomes their life’s fellow traveller And shapes their life with purpose to their days So when that door knock comes they’re not surprised They’ve walked with death beside them all their life They’ve lived a life the ancient gods would envy With love and dreams seen always as finite Of course they’ll miss their loved ones left behind But won’t feel cheated, angry, incomplete Their number’s up, they always saw it coming They look back at a life well lived, replete Tom Perfect Tom Perfect lives at Glenlyon with his wife Judy. Time to ChillOut
T
HERE may not be a grand parade but ChillOut is going ahead for the Labour Day long weekend, albeit in a small and COVID-safe way.
Director Michele Bauer said the community was the most important aspect of the ChillOut Festival. "And as such, we have made tweaks to the 2021 ChillOut Festival program to ensure that we are all doing our bit to be COVID-safe. "It’s a little last minute, we know, but we’ve shortened our festival to give our community time to look after themselves and their loved ones. We've also done this with our deepest respect to the artists, performers, and producers who will need the time to adapt to these changes. "What this also means is that we can still deliver a safe and superbly accessible (albeit mini) festival from March 4 to 7." Ms Bauer said some of the early festival events that were scheduled from February 27 to March had been postponed. "ChillOut is about community and pride. We've put the community's interest at the heart of these changes, not just to keep everyone safe but to preserve what is so vital about ChillOut. We will continue to celebrate our pride and enjoy our community with an abridged, diverse program. Plans are under way for rescheduled events in the future. "There are still plenty of incredible programming and events happening including the already sold out Mo'Ju show, Queerstories, the In-Conversation series with Patricia Karvelas, Splish Splash, Homophonic and plenty more." Check out the program in this edition of The Local - head to page 14.

It's all about real estate
W
HILE many people have dreamed of sea and tree changes for many years, it was the "how to" that stopped them.
But COVID-19 changed many things including people finding they could work from home, even three or four days a week, they could find great regional schools for their children and they could revel in smaller communities where they were connected to their neighbours and friends. And so areas like the Central Highland find themselves welcoming new residents who have decided it is time to make that life change. It also means it is the perfect time for those in regional areas, who have perhaps been thinking about downsizing, to sell up and move into more lifestyle properties that they can lock and leave - when we can travel again. In this edition of The Local you will find our bumper real estate feature, House. Land.Home. Premium with all of the properties you have ever dreamed of, offered up by myriad real estate agents. Even if you are not in the market to buy or sell, it's always interesting to see what is up for sale and for what price! H.L.H. Premium also has our regular features including Gardening by Glen, Design by Indre and Money with Matt. As well, there is a really interesting piece on the history of Continental House in Hepburn Springs inspired by none other than Arnold Saffer, whose parents built and ran the accommodation for many years. Arnold's wife Carol just happens to be a regular contributor to The Local so when she saw The Conti, as it's known, was for sale, she was only too happy to start typing. If you have a spare $2 million check it out on Biggin & Scott's advertising pages in H.L.H. Premium. It's an amazing building and business opportunity. With history! Enjoy the read and if you have any houses, land or homes for sale, think about the Easter edition of H.L.H. Premium - that's up next.

Saving our history, one monument at a time
V
ISITORS entering Daylesford from the east cannot miss the ornate neo-classical fountain sitting prominently on the right hand side of Raglan Street, especially since its refurbishment in the latter part of last year.
Officially known as The Wills Square Fountain, it was unveiled in March 1902 as a memorial to Queen Victoria who died in January 1901. By June 1901, The Age newspaper noted that, “the proposal to commemorate the late Queen Victoria by the erection of a handsome drinking fountain in Wills Square, Daylesford, finds much favor…and a considerable sum has been obtained in subscriptions”. Constructed to their own design by Milson and Sons of North Fitzroy, it was strongly influenced by the Hochgurtel Fountain in front of the old Melbourne Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton Gardens. Constructed in concrete on an iron framework, the Wills Square Fountain consisted of three bowls over which water cascaded supported by tritons and mermaids resting on a bed of ornamental rocks. Its installation was the cause of much celebration, with the Governor of Victoria Sir George S Clarke visiting to lay its foundation stone. But 50 years later the lustre was wearing off. Local historian Graeme Orr takes up the story. “The fountain was still alright but a councillor lived over the road and the water used to blow aloft from the little lady up the top and kept the road wet. And he never stopped complaining and so it was to go.” This was the point where Graeme first stepped in to help save the fountain. He was still at school at the time and mobilised the Bullarto Youth Club to clean up the site and organised support for their efforts. Subsequent lobbying of the council saw the decision reversed. But it was not to be the last time the historic object was slated to be removed, given away or replaced. By 1987 the fountain had crumbled and pieces of statuary lay mouldering in the fetid pond. With restoration costs prohibitive, the council voted to get rid of it once and for all. Graeme was now a councillor and tried to overturn the decision but to no avail. However a petition of some 200 locals opposing anything but a restoration or replication of the existing fountain brought the issue to a head. At the same time Gerald Billman, of Billmans Foundry Castlemaine offered to replicate the work in cast iron for $55,000, a third less than every other quote. The council approved and what people see today is Billman’s work. It was rededicated in January 1993 with a grand ceremony to match that of 1902. And still the issues continued for the mermaids and tritons. In 2000 the water was turned off, the ornamental rocks disappeared and by 2018 it was covered in dirt and slime, the garden unkempt and overgrown. Graeme along with former councillor and historian Heather Mutimer, who was on the original committee to save the fountain in the 90s, stepped in yet again. “It was a mess,'' says Graeme, "so we arranged to meet John Cottrell, the mayor at the time to discuss cleaning and maintaining the fountain and later (former mayor) Licia Kokocinski. “But then nothing happened. So around October 2020, I wrote a letter saying it was Daylesford’s biggest eyesore. The response was the allocation of $20,000 to repaint it, put the stones back and clean up the garden.” As of December the lights were back on, the water was flowing and the Queen Victoria Memorial Fountain was looking like new again. “It is good to see that the fountain has been revived,” says Graeme. “It is hoped that in the future council will maintain it and treat it as an important part of Daylesford. It is a beautiful monument and something to be proud of.”

Community News Message from the Mayor Victoria was still under hard lockdown last week and so the February Council meeting was held over Zoom with Councillors and Council Officers all participating remotely. You can watch it on Hepburn Shire’s Facebook page if you are interested. Council established a new Gender Equity Committee. One of the objectives of the Gender Equity Committee is to advocate for gender equity within the Hepburn Shire community – and that’s not just Council, that’s all of us. There are lots of issues where gender has an impact on people’s lives. For example, we know that the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to job losses, mental health and managing remote learning, has impact more severely on women and so COVID recovery strategies need to take that into account. It’s issues like this that the Gender Equity Committee will deal with. Look out for more information on the Council website for details about how you can nominate for the Committee. Council also looked to continue Hepburn Shire’s support for our LGBTIQA+ community by considering the establishment of a LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee, asking for a report on how it should be established, what the terms of reference should be and what should it look at. Another development to watch. Next week (23rd February) there will be a Special Council Meeting to consider the adoption of the Community Engagement Policy. This is another mandated piece of work required by the Local Government Act 2020 and to develop the policy we undertook a significant community engagement program across the Shire. This included hosting ten community ‘pop-ups’ in Clunes, Creswick, Daylesford, Glenlyon and Trentham, along with a survey which was available both online through the Participate Hepburn website and in hard copy. 325 people took part, in a very strong response from our community. It’s exciting to see it come to fruition in the Community Engagement Policy. The next stage of the Hepburn Together Project will be the Council 10 Year Vision and the 4 Year Council Plan. More details coming soon. It’s nearing the end of summer and as we move into autumn, we have ChillOut, our International Women’s Day celebrations and many other events to look forward to. Planning of course has been made more difficult with changing COVID restrictions and the realisation with the recent hard lockdown that this is going to be the so called ‘new normal’. Once again, the resilient, creative and competent Hepburn Shire community is adapting and getting on with it, developing ideas such as the Virtual Parade for ChillOut and we look forward to the celebrations. Community Engagement Policy Council’s newly drafted Community Engagement Policy (Policy) will be considered at a Special Council Meeting to be held on 23 February 2021. The Policy was drafted after significant input and feedback from the community. We are one of very few councils who consulted the community prior to the drafting of the document, so community insight and feedback drove the drafting of the Policy. Over 300 community members had their say on the Policy after ten pop-up sessions across the Shire and access to an online survey. We look forward to Council considering the item on Tuesday night and encourage the community to review the draft of the Policy and tune into the live stream Special Council Meeting For more on the project - https://participate.hepburn.vic.gov.au/.

The Village Festival – spreading the magic in Maldon
S
EVENTEEN years ago, Fryerstown local Suzanne Kalk wanted to bring a little bit of her Dutch arts heritage to the region.
Suzanne grew up experiencing regular travelling festivals where communities could experience the joy of the time-honoured tradition. Along with her husband Stuart Vaskess, both pictured, she had a dream to bring just such a festival to this part of the world. After nearly two decades of hard work and thanks to support from loyal Village crew and artists, local councils, the Victorian Government and local communities, The Village Festival now travels locally and interstate, spreading the joy of yesteryear’s carnivale tradition to young and old and, in Suzanne’s own words, “showcasing local talent in each community we visit in an original handmade festival environment”. “The Village Festival is a beautiful, beguiling festival that we created originally to provide an intimate, community-focused environment in which professional and non-professional artists and audiences can meet each other in bliss,” she said. “The programming aesthetic is populist, accessible, quirky, and littered with the familiar and the exotic. Folks you know personally and things you never knew existed. “Our festivals are fun, culturally diverse and normally include performances by local artists. Based on the ancient principles of funfairs, the Village Festival encourages artists to express themselves in special short performances and interact with the audience directly.” In 2012 Suzanne and her fellow organisers decided to hold The Village Festival biannually in the Castlemaine region to coincide with the Winter Solstice. It has grown over the years and in 2018 The Village Festival saw hundreds of people from far and away turn out to the Newstead Racecourse where a fireworks display was a major attraction, along with the other quirky aspects of the program that makes the travelling festival such a success. COVID stopped last year’s event going ahead but it’s the creatives in the entertainment industry that have shown time and time again how ingenious they can be, navigating the new norm. So, this year a completely new type of festival is being planned. “We are planning a drive-in event (The Village Fire Garden) at the Maldon Racecourse where people can still view a spectacular fireworks display from their cars. In collaboration with the local radio station, Main FM, people can listen to local identity and story teller Uncle Ron Murray create storytelling magic through their car radios adorned with visuals, sculptures, projections and fireworks all created by local artists,” she said. “Special effects will be part of the event to coincide with the storytelling and while it all takes a great deal of work and planning, it all comes down to our team coming up with new and creative ways to be able to provide a festival for locals to be part of. To engage and just to escape the everyday.”
“We see our role as facilitating a gift from the local community back to our community,” she said. The date for the Village Fire Garden is Saturday, June 19 and Suzanne and her team will host an event next month at Castlemaine’s State Festival titled Our Village: From a City Grows a Garden. Children aged between 5-12 are encouraged to be part of the event that will include a collaborative cardboard city built with native seeds imbedded in the material. The gardens will then be unveiled at the State Festival. The event will take place over two weekends in late March.

Tales of barbers, billiards and betting
T
HE shop at 49 Fraser Street, Clunes has been in existence since the 1870s. Its first tenant was John Lemmon, a saddler and today of course it now holds the newsagency owned by Craig Drewer. But its life as a barber shop and billiards hall for over 40 years and the larger than life character of "Flash Les" Davis is where our story will focus.
Les Davis was born in 1903 and grew up in Ballarat where he had a barber shop on Sturt Street. He married Ethel Jones in 1927 and they had a son Robert in 1928 later to become famous as the AFL footballer Bob "Woofa" Davis. In the 1930s the family moved to Clunes where he took over a small space and continued his trade. But Les’s business portfolio was a little more diverse than just shaving hair and trimming moustaches. His early days in Ballarat were taken up with refining the art of playing billiards and running an SP bookmaking operation out the side of his barbershop. Illegal starting price bookmaking emerged around Australia in the 1930s when the advent of phone and radio allowed the results of a horse race to be immediately known. SP bookies would take bets fixed to the starting odds or price of a runner which finalised just before the barriers opened. While the bookie and gamblers could get an idea of how the odds were moving in the hours before the actual race, the official starting price could only be known afterwards and thus determining final payouts. It seems like a complicated way to make a living but before the rise of regulated and taxed off-course betting shops such as the Totalisator Agency Board, or TAB, SP bookies were everywhere and hugely popular with generations of punters. It was natural enough for Les to continue his bookie operations when he opened his barber shop . And it was rumoured that the ladies who worked at the old manual telephone exchange in the old post office tipped him off whenever the Vice Squad were planning a surprise visit. Over the years the place developed into quite a hangout for people in town. And not just for his barbering skills or bookie activity but due to the billiards saloon he had out the back with tables salvaged from the nearby Club and National hotels. He also had a lending library installed filled mostly with western cowboy novels. Ethel had died in 1948 in Queensland, which seems to suggest that she and Les had parted company by that time. Son Robert was carving out quite a career as a professional Aussie Rules football player and was playing for Geelong Football Club. By 1955 Les had remarried to Elsie Filby who remained with him until his death in 1983 at 80 years of age.
By all accounts he was a "colourful character" with all the dubious connotations that come with the term. Known as Flash Les, he liked to flash a fat roll of notes and was an old fashioned ladies man who could sing onstage and was always chosen to MC concerts and socials. That's him pictured above, reclining front and centre, at a town social in 1938. In Just a Boy From the Bush Lloyd Jones describes him as “bookmaker and barber, polished and witty, as gentlemen of those callings usually are”. Maureen French, writing about her experiences of Clunes in the early 70s recalls being serenaded by Les from his shop as she did her shopping. And Christine Rowe, whose father was friends with Les, remembers as a kid the barber shop being a man's place that you were not allowed to go into.

Family memories of The Continental guest house
M
Y HUSBAND Arnold’s grandparents, Dave and Rose Saffer, built The Continental guest house in Hepburn Springs in 1927 and ran it until 1937. As it is on the market it seems like a good time to take a peek back into the family story.
Details of the Saffers' history are faint and hard to remember as the four surviving grandchildren range from 73 to 84. To Arnold, they were Pop and Bubbeh. The recollection of stories handed down a generation or two, together with their memories brings life to Dave and Rose's unique character. His father Meyer Saffer, always referred to as Mick, was their only son, born in 1912, and the youngest of their three children. Arnold says his dad told him that Pop was a candlestick maker by profession. While his cousin Judith remembers her mum Faye, born in 1907, showing her a document, stating his profession was a walking stick bender. On Mick's marriage certificate Pop is listed as a guest house owner. Clearly, Dave Saffer was a man of many talents. Family folklore has it that Dave and Rose emigrated from Minsk in the USSR, however it is unknown exactly when. Records show the couple passed through immigration on Ellis Island in New York. After arriving in Melbourne, Dave heard that land was cheap in Hepburn Springs. He took Rose and their three kids up to the Central Highlands, built The Continental and had all of them working in the family business. Judith describes her Pop as "an adventurer". "He built The Conti, residential homes and Beer-Sheba guest house and tea rooms down the hill from The Conti," Judith said. The guests were mostly from Melbourne's Jewish community. Traditionally they would head to the hills for summer vacations, and The Continental was a favourite destination. Judith recalls her mother Faye talking about working as a waitresses in The Conti's dining room alongside her sister Katie who was a year or two older. "Mum could carry six plates on each arm from the kitchen to the guest's tables," Judith said. "Pop would often appear in the kitchen towards the end of service on a busy weekend with a couple of mattresses under his arm. He would tell the girls he had rented their rooms to newly-arrived guests, and they would need to sleep in the kitchen that night." Paul Nathan, one of Katie's sons, describes Pop as "a quiet man whose English was OK, but he was not a big conversationalist". "He was about 5 feet 6 inches in height, typical solid Russian build and strong," Paul said. "He could lift two bags of cement, one on each shoulder and then climb the ladder to the roof." Paul said after both guest houses were up and running Pop continued to build homes in Hepburn Springs. "I witnessed the day when Pop said, in Russian-accented English, 've are going to dat block over dere to clear it,'" he said. His Pop didn't use tractors or machinery to remove the trees. "He would dig a hole and insert three sticks of dynamite at the bottom of each tree," Paul said. He would then join all the wicks, set for 20 seconds, together, light them and yell run! All the trees would lift out of the ground and then Pop used a belt-driven petrol saw to cut the trees into logs which became the frame of the house." Arnold adds that Bubbeh's job, together with Katie and Fay, was to look after the guest house's interior. Bubbeh ran the kosher kitchen and supervised housekeeping the guest rooms, dining room and the sitting areas. "The kitchen had a wood-burning stove, and Bubbeh would kill the chickens herself," Arnold said. Pop constructed a tennis court for guests' use only, behind the guest house building. Arnold said Pop, in his customary manner, used dynamite to level the hilly ground. He also welded wrought iron gates, embellished with a Star of David, for the driveway leading to a rotunda he built in the grounds to hold musical events. He remembers the story his dad Mick told, about Bubbeh and the tennis courts. "One day Bubbeh noticed a couple of young boys playing a game of tennis," Arnold said. "She runs out of the kitchen down to the court. Imagine a small rotund woman, resembling a babushka doll, chasing these two boys away. She is shaking her finger at them, shouting 'who gave you commission?'. I realised she meant permission and I still chuckle about it."

lmost the moment we wind up the hoses and put away the watering can, the weather turns feral and we get hit with a week of 30C+ days just long enough to wilt the hardiest of plants. And then back comes the rain...almost enough to leave off watering. I suppose the simple answer is to maintain your watering regime regardless of the weather. Unless you are flooding the beds, that would be preferable to relying on the rains alone. The autumn transition period is a critical one for the garden. With the exception of most indigenous plants, whose major growth time is the colder months, all trees and shrubs whether evergreen or deciduous, start to wind down about now, to prepare for winter hibernation. It’s only the coldest climate plants, for obvious reasons, that shed their leaves. So, apart from playing hide and seek with the hoses, you can easily fill your days preparing for the incoming wintry months. Summer-flowering perennials and shrubs, especially roses, will appreciate having their spent flower heads removed. Perhaps even a light pruning to remove weak or damaged growth. The herbaceous perennials could be cut right back in readiness for any division or replanting later in the colder months. A dressing of organic plant food will support either any autumn growth encouraged by the lingering warm weather, or to store energy in readiness for spring. Any growth-inducing nitrogenous fertiliser should be applied asap to allow any fresh new growth to harden before the arrival of winter chills and frost. This is particularly important for citrus and other frost-tender plants.
Friends of Wombat Hill
Last week, as an excuse to escape the house, we took our two dishlickers for a stroll through Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens, a regular ramble, partly to score a snap or two for this column. We love the gardens and are in awe of the love and dedication of the small band of volunteers who, since 1995, have worked tirelessly to restore and maintain this most beautiful treasure as an icon, equal to any of the regional gardens I’ve seen. By chance we decided to meander up to see the latest developments of the delightful little nursery the 'Friends' had established some years ago, to produce and sell for funds an eclectic collection of sometimes rare perennials and shrubs. The nursery tucked away beside Wombat Hill House had been since its beginnings an open house. Unfortunately, in the mistaken belief that true garden lovers such as themselves who would think nothing of taking an occasional cutting from an inviting bush, would never think of actually stealing plants. So if unattended, the public were invited to select their plants and trusted to place their money in the cash tin provided. Peta and I were dismayed to find that since our last visit the Friends had unfortunately seen fit to turn the nursery into a virtual fortress, complete with electronic detectors and surrounded by a tall steel fence. Our wonder at what had driven the committee to such lengths was put at rest by the arrival of a committee member who explained that recently, the once quite profitable fundraiser had started to lose money along with quite a few unaccountable plants. (No doubt in my mind, mostly the rare ones.) He also told us that suspiciously similar plants to those stolen had turned up in landscaped gardens and on local market stalls. If you wish to assist the Friends in any way or even join their ranks: Friends of Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens PO Box 267 Daylesford 3460 website: wombathill.org.au email: friends@wombathill.org.au Also, check out the Wombat Hill Facebook page which includes lists of their available plants etc. Stop the press: It appears that I’m not alone in my admiration for the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens. The Victorian Government has just announced the Growing Victoria’s Botanic Gardens grants program with Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens receiving $22,647 for the development of a Collections Policy, and a pilot planting project that will trial new species as recommended by the policy. Great news.

Design Desk Cramming 101
with Indre Kisonas
How many do you have is not a question one would normally ask when referring to a desk. Now, we all know that things were shook up a bit last year - in particular our working conditions. Working or studying from home found us sharing desks or tables with family members. Working from the kitchen table, perching on the lounge or in the bed. Many of us purchased or repurposed pieces of furniture to cram into spaces, like landings or dining areas, just to get some space to work constructively at. My household, for example, was making do last year. We did place a desk on the landing. With an open plan house, the family noise tends to drift up the stairs for a distraction. The foot traffic up and down the stairs is also a distraction. The kitchen table is worse. There is always somebody in the kitchen eating when everybody is home through a lockdown. The child working in their bedroom insists that they are fine, curled upon the bed, but you know they are not. Not only is there no separation from your place of sleep (invariably disturbing both sleep and concentration cycles) but posture problems start to be felt. This year we snapped up an old teacher’s desk that a friend was parting with. I do love an old piece of furniture. You know it’s made well and they used real timber back then. Stuff just isn’t made the same anymore. A good sanding and a wipe over with Tung oil gave this desk new life. It also gave my son a sense of achievement and connection when he finished cleaning up this desk. Never give up an old piece of furniture if you can help it. Somebody is bound to have a use or a repurpose for it.
How do you now work effectively? Sit in natural light. Have a good ergonomic chair with arm rests if you can, to save shoulder, neck and upper back tensions. Place yourself out of any draughts. Wear ear protection from the television or family noise. Invest in a desk lamp if overhead lighting is producing shadowing on your work area and finally, protect your back. It’s a psychological thing whereby you feel more at ease when your back is not exposed. Reposition your workspace so your back is facing a wall, a screen or bookshelf. If there is a door to close off, even better. Privacy helps anybody think better. A whole lot of fathers taking reading material to the dunny will lay testimony to that. These same principles should be used in any office space, not just a home environment, to gain effective concentration and productivity. Ideally you are also able to see the natural outside environment through a window or door, but when we are still talking about cramming workspaces into home environments, we just have to do the best we can with what we have. It may be another tough year for us all. Let’s now make sure we are working more effectively. When and if business offices see a return of staff, have the floorplan repositioned most effectively. I’m happy to assist you achieving harmony. I am but a phone call away.

Money with Matt
I
FIND all too often that one of the most important things in your financial life is either glossed over, or seldom looked at. That thing is superannuation.
It is all too common for the average Aussie to not give any thought to their superannuation position until they are well into their 40s. Now clearly, this is up to the individual. However, logic dictates that if you start looking at your superannuation at age 45 you will have approximately 20 years until you want to retire. Compare this to actively taking an interest in your super at age 25, you literally give yourself double the time to prepare for your twilight years. Simply put, the earlier you invest, the more time your investment has to grow. There are plenty of industry superannuation funds to choose from, and they all have their slight differences. These funds have numerous other investors that you essentially invest with using the advice of the financial advisers of that particular fund. Alternatively, there are options available to obtain a self-managed superannuation fund where you can have full control of what you invest in. This can be a great option should you wish to have control of whether you invest in shares, property etc. The current property market in regional Victoria has certainly been a good investment over the past two to three years. There are also numerous insurance options within your superannuation that can be highly advantageous should you experience health difficulties and require some financial assistance. Some of the insurances that are really worth having can be – income protection, total permanent disability and death insurance. The bottom line is, like all insurances, if you don’t have it organised before you need it, the ending won’t be pretty. In summary, although my comments above are general in nature, I can’t stress enough how important it is to be on top of your superannuation affairs from an early age. The earlier you start your journey, the easier it becomes. It can be very stressful to start paying attention to your super at age 60, where you are forced to try and squash 45 years of work into five years (borderline impossible). Furthermore, whilst there is certainly no ‘one size fits all’ solution to superannuation it is vital to obtain specialist advice that suits your needs.
Compare this to actively taking an interest in your super at age 25, you literally give yourself double the time to prepare for your twilight years. Simply put, the earlier you invest, the more time your investment has to grow.

Geelong Businessman, Mark Ward has ownership of the Mill Markets group and brings years of expertise to this amazing concept. The Mill Markets operate three massive venues located in Ballarat, Daylesford and Geelong. With a total of over 12,000 square metres of undercover floor space, (3 acres), treasure hunters have the opportunity to spend many hours browsing and meandering through the eclectic mix of products. There is a fantastic variety of home decor, furniture, records, vintage and new clothing, books, fine china, glassware, industrial items, jewellery, antiques as well as Australian pottery, homewares, memorabilia, retro fashions and collectables. We also have many stalls selling new products and have gift vouchers for those people who have everything!
All goods are from the 1850’s right through to present day. Mill Markets lease space to hundreds of dealers, which allows small business operators and collectors who otherwise could not afford the overheads of their own shops, to showcase their goods. This equates to a wide and diverse range of products, available and open to the public, seven days a week. Enjoy a wonderful trip down memory lane through hundreds and thousands of items available for purchase at all three locations. With over 500 stall holders over three venues, there is always something for everyone. Travel The Amazing Mill Markets ‘Golden Triangle’ and enjoy quality food and coffee at each. All venues open 7 days 10.00am-6.00pm (excluding Christmas Day).

Catch all the content from The Local and even some stuff that didn’t make it to print. Remember how tomatoes used to taste? We do. We taste them every day. Florian grows deep flavoured and aromatic fruit and vegetables on his organic farm near the summit of Mount Franklin including over 50 types of heritage tomatoes. Tomatoes with such fine flesh and thin skins that they could never stand a trip in the back of a supermarket truck, but perfect for a small store likes ours. So every day, Florian brings them into the store along with other fantastic local producers who drop off their prized fruit, vegetables, herbs, meat, smoked goods and cheeses. For we are a different kind of food store. First and foremost, we are dedicated foodies and appreciate the value of sourcing high quality ingredients with the best local produce, fantastic artisan foods and those international gourmet delicacies that are increasingly difficult to source. We haven’t forgotten those that have speciality requirements either. We stock an impressive range of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free products. So whether you’re cooking a feast or special dish, packing for a simple country picnic, need a coffee or floral pick-me-up, you’ll find everything that you need (and crave) at Blake’s. Please note we are a contact-free cashless store. All cards accepted. 1 Howe Street Daylesford. Ph 5318 1128 Florian Hofinger, Mount Franklin Organics. Photography by Richard Cornish.

Just sayin’... By Donna Kelly
H
AD a little win today. Not much, but you know, they all count. Now before you write in saying I am a grumpy old woman, yes, sometimes I am.
So, I was in Coles Daylesford on Friday, happily doing my shopping. Well not happily, I don't much like shopping and especially not for dinner. So boring. But someone has to do it - and Kyle was off chatting to someone. Strange that. So, I was in the water aisle, not that it matters where I was, but I am just trying to draw you a picture. Which I tried to do but as you can see I can't draw, only write. (That square can either be a basket or a box of water.) Anyway, I was in the aisle and there were a couple of bright young things shopping together. He had the trolley and she had the lips. I mean, really big lips. If a trout had swum past, it would have drooped its head in shame. In fact, its bottom lip would have been dragging on the ground with embarrassment in not really representing its species to the full. And to the full were this girl's lips. And very glossy and shiny and red. And that is when it hit me, I can see your lips. Yes, I can see a mouth with lips. And not just a mouth that is kind of covered with a nose peeking out but a full mouth and a chin and did I also spy a couple of hairs sprouting from the top lip? Probably not but I felt like that would be fun to add. So, the girl moved down the aisle to peruse some other items and I turned to look at the bloke, who also had nice lips and a light fluffy moustache, and said in a very firm voice: "Do you both have exemptions to wearing masks?" He looked a bit astonished, clearly being a woman over 50 I am pretty much invisible to anyone under 30, but answered with a mumble: "No, but we didn't have any in the car." Now, I could have left it there but I hit back with the time honoured: "Well, you shouldn't be in this store!" and walked off. He moved on and caught up with his friend and they both looked in my direction, and with my mask and sunglasses firmly covering most of my face, I gave them my best glare. They looked back like I was an idiot and we all moved on. But as I queued for Joy, as in the real register Joy, not just happiness to be getting out of Coles, I saw the girl walk out of the store and back in, within minutes, wearing a black mask and holding another. Game over. Nice playin'... Just sayin'...
COMMUNITY VISION & COUNCIL PLAN Stage 2 of the Hepburn Together project is the development of the 10 Year Community Vision and the 4 Year Council Plan. Like the process for developing the draft Community Engagement Policy, we want your feedback. Our Community Vision will capture our goals and aspirations for the next 10 years and set Council’s strategic direction. The first step in developing our Community Vision is to explore two important questions: Where are we now? Where do we want to be? A Council Plan is the strategic document that guides Council’s focus and energy over the course of a 4 year Council term. It will consider the current strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and aspirations of the community through analysis and community engagement to inform our direction and goals. We have a series of community pop-up sessions for you to come and have your say (more dates to come): •
26 February 2021 (4 - 6pm) - Front of Glenlyon General Store
•
27 February 2021 (10am-12pm) - Front of Clunes IGA
•
27 February 2021 (2 - 4pm) - Front of Creswick IGA
•
28 February 2021 (8 -10am) - Near Daylesford Sunday Market
•

For more community pop-up times and information on the project visit https://participate.hepburn.vic.gov.au/. There will also be an online survey available for those who can’t make any of the community popup sessions.

Kyle’s Rant
"
THE eagle has landed." That is what our federal health minister Greg Hunt declared last week but surely after around 12 months of waiting for this silver bullet against the bug, he could have come up with something better and well, less American.
The eagle has landed has its origins in the first moon landing or as the sceptics call it: "The alleged first landing." The commentator of the day (I think his name was Neil) went on to say in a kind of twisted Darth Vader voice: "That’s one small step for man (demand breath), one giant leap for mankind (demand breath).” So surely minister Hunt could have dreamed up something more Australian. “Where the bloody hell are you?” followed by “Oh, there you bloody well are”. Or “that’s not a knife, it’s a needle.” Or even “Tell him he's dreaming” or what about the famous quote from the original Mad Max: "I am the night rider." Just give us something with teeth Mr Hunt, or nothing at all. Channel Ten’s The Project even bunged it on with footage of a plane landing with the soundtrack to 2001: A Space Odyssey. WTH? This was our time to trot out a famous quote that would live in households for the next few decades like when Bob Hawke declared, after the 1983 American Cup win, “any boss who sacks anyone today for not turning up is a bum”. Now that was a statement. Opportunity missed, I say, but I do wonder what our mates across the ditch who got their vaccine on the same day said. I couldn't find much press even in their own newsfeeds. But if I were writing speeches for PM Jacinda Ardern, it would have gone like this: Kiwi accent - "At last, our friend in the fridge has arrived and that is exactly where it will stay, below 70 degrees". (That was a Mainland cheese advert - "Your frind in the frudge".) Truly leaders, you missed your opportunity to timestamp this amazing moment in history and let it go by with a clumsy Americanism. Vaccine rant over…
