The Local is brought to you by a team of local journalists, photographers, columnists, sub-editors, graphic designers, book-keepers and, of course, great delivery people. So when we talk about being local, we really do put our money where our mouth is.

The Local's motto is to "connect the community" by bringing people closer with great features on amazing local people and ensuring you know what is happening around your community whether that's a festival, a fete or maybe just a great special from one of our fantastic advertisers. Content is key.

We love writing about local people doing inspiring things and even local people doing ordinary things. And as some people, mostly politicians, have found out, if you are not local you will not appear in the pages of The Local.

You will find The Local, and all the back copies, online at www.tlnews.com.au and we deliver bulk drops throughout the region along with smaller "cafe" packs to every cafe, hotel, bar and restaurant we can find. We've even heard of The Local turning up in places like a cafe in St Kilda and a bar in Bali! All up we have a print and online readership of about 14,000.

The Local's advertising rates have always been kept affordable so even small advertisers can advertise big. Colour is free, the sizes are an eighth, quarter, banner, half and full page and we can help with making up branding and graphics. The world is confusing enough, so we like to keep things simple.

Finally, from the start, we have offered two free adverts in every edition for notfor-profit organisations along with a rescue pet looking for a new home. It's just our way of giving back. We really hope you enjoy this edition of The Local.

Goats prove adept at rounding up weeds

Local Lines Tip The tip of a paintbrush is magical.

It can produce a fine line to become a fatter line that curves so beautifully in arcs and swirls or the sharp line that gives an edge add sketchy bits of highlight or feathered lines of softness.

The tips of an egret’s wings are elegance directing a long soar over the tree tops or a sharp dive to the water.

The tip of an icicle is fascinating not sharp but bulbous with a single drop of melt.

There it goes – another drop slowly forms.

New parks for Wombat

T

HE Victorian Environmental Assessment Council recommendations for public land in the Central West investigation have been welcomed by Wombat Forestcare.

Convenor Gayle Osborne said the organisation was delighted that the State Labor government instigated the investigation and VEAC had recommended the creation of a Wombat-Lerderderg National Park and Cobaw Conservation Park.

“The United Nations recent report warned that an astounding million species are threatened with extinction. This highlights the importance of the creation of these parks, which will provide protected habitat for many species, and in particular greater glider,” Ms Osborne said.

“Members of Wombat Forestcare have been campaigning for greater protection of Wombat Forest for over 10 years, and VEAC’s recommendations are recognition of the forest's very high conservation and catchment values.

The VEAC investigation found the Wombat Forest was a “stronghold” for protection of many threatened native species including the greater glider, brush-tailed phascogale and the endemic wombat leafless bossiaea.

VEAC also highlighted the importance of the Wombat Forest as a water catchment with the headwaters of seven major river systems contained in the forest, and the value the forest provides in terms of ecosystem services and carbon sequestration.

“The recommended boundaries for the national, conservation and regional Parks achieve a balance between protecting conservation yet still permitting recreational opportunies closer to townships such as Trentham and Daylesford.

“Domestic firewood collection, dog walking, horse riding and prospecting will be allowed in the various sections of the regional parks. If the recommendations are adopted sawlog harvesting in the forest will finally cease, and we see an end to the successive periods of over logging of the forest."

Ms Osborne said Wombat Forestcare called on the State Labor govenment to support VEAC’s recommendations and create a new Wombat-Lerderderg National Park.

New ultra-light for Porcupine Ridge CFA

P

ORCUPINE Ridge CFA has a new ultra-light vehicle – thanks to some persistent fundraising.

Firefighter Rob Hands said the CFA had been fundraising for seven years for the 4WD vehicle with $12,800 raised through raffle ticket sales with the Daylesford Volleyball Association and another $10,000 donated by the Bendigo Bank. The total cost of the vehicle was $135,000.

Mr Hands said the vehicle would help with remote access around Porcupine Ridge and throughout the region.

“We have had some fires here over the past 10 years that have been really difficult to access, especially to the north, and a couple of times the fires have got away from us because we couldn’t get the big tanker in.

“So we identified the need for a smaller vehicle. This will also make a real difference to the Glenlyon Group. Leonards Hill, Trentham and us all now have ultra-lights and it gives us more capacity, especially in difficult areas here like the recent Hepburn fire. Parts of that were really difficult to access. And we have already used this vehicle in the Mt Clear fires – it is really, really capable.”

Mr Hands said while people thought of winter as downtime for CFA volunteers, they were still busy training and attending fires, although mostly house fires.

“The main thing for winter is chimney fires and people should get their flues checked and make sure their smoke alarms are working.”

Mr Hands said while the Porcupine Ridge CFA had 35 members with 20 operational, more volunteers were always welcome.

“We all work so can be anywhere when the pager goes off, which can mean a delayed response time. The more access to people means a better chance of getting the truck out in time.”

Daylesford Volleyball Association coach Colin Priest said in the past 12 years his organisation had raised about $150,000 for various causes including the ARC, the Hepburn Shire SES and Glenlyon CFA. “Porcupine Ridge CFA were fighting a fire at my place a couple of years ago and said they needed an ultra-light so I asked them to come and join us selling raffle tickets.

“We target the tourists on the weekends so we are not taking money out of our own pockets and they are very happy to buy tickets or just donate. With the CFA we also hand out a huge amount of fire safety material.”

Mr Priest said this year the association would be selling tickets to help Daylesford Primary School’s kitchen garden.

Probus birthday

HE Probus Club of Daylesford celebrated its 32nd birthday at the Daylesford Bowling Club on June 18 with 58 members attending along with Daylesford Rotary guests.

Current president, Anne Bremner, and 10 past presidents attended, with an apology from Dot Bull (2012/13).

Driving celebrations

N 85th successful licence this month is proof of the important work being delivered by the Hepburn’s L2P program, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary.

Since its inception in 2009, the Hepburn L2P program has matched young learners who don’t have access to a supervising driver or vehicle to a volunteer mentor and sponsored vehicle, so they can reach the 120 hours for their P plates.

More than 170 young learner drivers have participated in the Hepburn program, working alongside 56 mentors to clock up almost 7000 hours on local roads in a range of conditions. L2P is free for eligible young people and is funded by the TAC and is managed by VicRoads Community Programs team.

Blanket gift

ORE than 100 blankets, supplied by Creswick Woollen Mills, are being distributed by Daylesford Rotary to needy people across Hepburn Shire and region.

Rotary president Andrew Nuske said club member Chris Soper came up with the project and contacted Creswick Woollen Mills who donated 20 blankets and made another 100 available at a highly discounted rate.

"As the weather is getting cold, there are many people who lack adequate heating or cannot afford the high cost of electricity, gas and firewood. These blankets will help not only residents but also homeless people," Mr Nuske said.

Mr Soper said the club had approached Hepburn Health Service, police and an opportunity shop and would distribute the blankets through them.

"We distributed blankets around 15 years ago, supplied by Creswick Woollen Mills, and our members thought it was time to do so again," Chris said.

Mr Nuske said Daylesford Rotary supported many projects, groups and individuals each year, with most being local.

Networking Japan artworks Input needed

HE Local, in conjunction with Hepburn Shire Council, held a winter networking event at the Daylesford Hotel on Wednesday, June 17.

RTWORKS from Macedon Ranges sister city in Japan are currently on display in the foyer of the council’s Kyneton offices.

The artworks have been provided as part of an art exchange, which was the final action of the current sister Council's Economic Development coordinator city agreement with Tokai City.

Rebecca Pedretti gave a talk to around 30 attendees on The artwork includes a timber-framed calligraphy the latest development of the Hepburn Hub at the Rex piece which represents the sister ciry relationship. The building in Vincent Street.

OREST Fire Management Victoria is committed to involving local communities in decision making about bushfire management.

Grampians Region’s assistant chief fire officer Tony English said the community was asked, in February, to help inform strategic bushfire management planning.

“Feedback from that process has been appreciated and we now have a clearer understanding of the direction the community would like us to take. We invite community members to participate in a supplementary consultation process, which will test what we have heard and provide the opportunity for additional input.”

EN Latta lived in Melbourne for 10 years, studying and working in marketing and event management positions. In 2012, Owen convinced her to leave the city to be closer to his vineyard, Eastern Peake. She now runs Wine and the Country and Dos Deli in Daylesford. And the couple, pictured left, hasn't looked back Jen

We always make the time together for each other, both of us are lucky to have amazing people working for us. There’s no such thing as being too busy, that's just a disorganised person who never makes the time.

There are always challenges being in a long distance relationship, moving to a regional area like Daylesford, helping open a small business like Wine and the Country, running a small family business like Eastern Peake/LATTA. It's always a bit of a bumpy road but it's a fun ride once you look back to see then and now.

In 10 years I would like to be watching the places we’ve both worked so hard on continue to prosper whilst still being involved.

We met in the old fashioned way...on the dance floor of a nightclub in Geelong.

We were in our early twenties and Owen wined and dined me around Melbourne. I was very impressed, I'd previously only tasted wine from boxes. The first time Owen Words: As told to Donna Kelly | Image: Contributed offered me an Eastern Peake Chardonnay to drink, I believe I added orange juice before sipping. I definitely couldn't hide my wine-inexperience.

I like Owen's passion for what he does, his kindness and enthusiasm to drop whatever he's doing to help anyone else, and his tolerance - especially important in dealing with me.

I wouldn't change anything about him. Nothing, I promise...although if I had to say something maybe the ability to be on time rather than keep "winemaker time" 40 minutes late, always. It seems to be a common trait among all winemakers though.

We're much better working in complementary roles rather than side-by-side.

Owen's expertise lies in being in the vineyard, not in working in hospitality. Although it didn't stop him from offering to help out for the first three years at Wine and the Country. Now we've both carved out our individual places in the food and wine industry, it's a lot smoother ride.

Working in food and wine means that it's important to wine and dine out at other venues and support others in their ventures. So we tend to make those lunches and dinners into dates. Dress up a little, enjoy what another venue has to offer, and catch up with each other. Having two dogs to walk every day helps too, it's a nice way to start the day in Daylesford, walking the dogs down to Dos Deli for an early coffee, carving out half an hour together before the work day begins.

Daylesford was the compromise we had to make between Melbourne CBD living and living on the vineyard. But the minute we found our place in the Daylesford community, it all made a bit more sense. We wouldn't look back.

In 10 years I'd love Wine and the Country and Dos Deli to become institutions in Daylesford and continue to be a part of the small business landscape. The opportunity to take Owen's wines to more countries so that we can justify more and more travel would be amazing as well.

Owen We met back in 2007 while out dancing one Thursday evening in Geelong, the venue no longer exists but our love for each other is vibrant as ever.

We loved spending our time together at any chance possible, as it was a long distance relationship between Melbourne (Jen) and Coghills Creek (me). We had lots of fun adventures around Melbourne and Victoria getting to know each other.

I like Jen's looks, drive and personality and would change nothing about her.

We work together only occasionally these days. It's fun when I get a chance to work in the wine shop or deli or Jen gets a chance to come over to the winery to help out during vintage.

HE annual Great Trentham Spudfest is gearing up for its 13th year in May 2020 when all the fun and games will take over the town. This festival is a wonderful way to celebrate the spirit of the community and recognise Trentham’s potato-growing heritage.

Once again, the usually shy, humble and bashful potato will burst free from life underground and bask in the limelight for festivities in its honour.

The Great Trentham Spudfest is an opportunity for visitors and the local community to join in a number of exciting spud activities and have a spudtacular time.

Each year about 6000 people come along to enjoy the festivities - with something for everyone.

HE Trentham Easter Art & Craft Show is managed by a committee of dedicated volunteers and is now regarded as one of the state’s top regional exhibitions of its type.

The show is open to amateur and professional artists from both the local area and further afield. Proceeds from the show are used to support local art-related activities.

RENTHAM Christmas Carols in the Park, organised by the Lions Club of Trentham, is a must-do on the town's calendar.

Held in the Quarry Street Reserve on the first Friday in December, along with the concert and carols, there's always a special visit from Santa. There's also community singing, hot food and a bumper Christmas hamper raffle on offer.

Jargon celebrating 34 years in Trentham

ELEN McRae, the owner and creator of Jargon, first arrived in Trentham in the early 1980s.

She found the town and the rural environment inspiring, and purchased a small cottage as a weekender and visited regularly. Helen chatted with Donna Kelly.

Donna: What's your background?

Helen: As a child I always dabbled in sewing which I continued into my teenage years. When I began my tertiary education, I realised that the academic subjects I had studied at secondary school would not lead to a career that nourished my creative needs. I changed direction and pursued a course to become a primary school art teacher.

Donna: When did you open Jargon and why?

Helen: This is a timely question because this week Jargon celebrated its 34th birthday. Back in 1985 I was looking for a lifestyle change and decided to explore the possibility of earning a living doing something creative. The shop at 34 High Street was available to rent so, encouraged by the words of Mark Twain: “The secret of success is making your vocation your vacation” I took the plunge and opened Jargon. Hmm… winter in Trentham … is this really a good idea?

Donna: What do you do?

Helen: I explore my creativity using textiles as the medium.

I use an extensive range of different fabrics because it is the fabric that initially inspires me. Basically, I sew! Using various techniques such as felting, quilting and machine embroidery I am able to create an ever-evolving body of new work. I design and create seasonal garments. For the cooler weather, mainly coats and jackets using fabric treatments that can include nuno felting, silk embellishment, random pin tucking, hand-dyeing, or just combining fabrics of differing texture. And, for warmer weather, lightweight garments of various types specialising in the use of randomly dyed silks. Cushions and bags offer the ideal canvas for spontaneous expression. I also design and make collector teddy bears using high quality German mohair. And the list goes on. The work I create reflects my wide-ranging interests and eclectic tastes.

Donna: You are known for amazing window dressings - what is your inspiration each time?

Helen: I’m always pleased when I hear that people get a buzz from my window displays. I can begin in different ways. An idea can pop into my head and I start with the products themselves, supporting them with colours and textures. I have all sorts of props but often ad lib with what comes to hand. Alternatively, I start with the window space and take a more sculptural approach, mixing structural elements with flowing fabrics. If I get stuck I allow my intuition to do the hard work and point me in a direction.

Donna: Are textiles/sewing a lost art these days?

Helen: Nearly…well, in some areas! There are lots of people still pursuing patchwork and quilting, however, I have a sense that many others are no longer sewing clothes for themselves. The indicators are that more people are following the trend towards ‘fast fashion’ - which in essence could be described as ‘buy for today and tomorrow throw away’.

This is the opposite to my philosophy. I believe in the ethical approach of the ‘slow movement’. I design and make my garments and other creations to last. I have always sourced and used quality fabrics.

Donna: Is there something in the water at Trentham? There seems to be a huge amount of talent.

Helen: Yes, there is definitely something in the water - it is fine quality coffee prepared by some very talented alchemists, aka baristas. This raises the age-old question: What came first, the artist or the cafe? Artists have always been part of the Trentham community - painters, sculptors, writers, poets, musicians - not forgetting the farmers whose creativity was expressed through innovative solutions to the challenges they faced from day to day. There is a certain vibe that attracts ‘creatives’ to the town. Tourists notice it and often make comment.

Donna: How has Trentham changed over the years? Has it been a good change?

Helen: It is said that the only constant in life is change! So, yes, Trentham has changed. On the weekend in the 'early days’, there could have been as few as four or five cars in the main street at any one time - invariably locals.

Of course, now Trentham is a busy tourist destination. Whether this is considered to be a good or bad thing would depend upon who you asked. There has been an increase in the population over the last decade and the pace is a lot faster but for me it is still a great place to live.

Donna: Anything else you would like to add?

Helen: I am very pleased to have chosen Trentham as the place to establish Jargon. I am grateful to the ‘old’ locals who supported and encouraged me in the beginning. Now, 34 years later I am indeed fortunate that the Trentham community continues to support my creative endeavours.

The journey of a painting through Trentham

T

HE delivery of the Charlie Chaplin painting might have made a Chaplinesque script.

With constant rain all day, the painting sheltered for ages in what used to be our living room until I found the warmth of the fire in there helps my works dry.

The weather radar finally predicted half an hour of sunshine. But I only got 50 metres staggering with every gust of wind while the painting pretended to be a giant sail before a pitter-patter of rain turned into a deluge.

Steph and Rhonda offered us a fragrant refuge in The Green Store while I revisited the weather radar app, which assured me we had 25 minutes of sunshine still to go.

Rang Melanie Thomas at Chaplin’s to let her know we were delayed and she took off to Trentham IGA to buy a $6 tarp.

Meanwhile, Rhonda set off on foot in the deluge to retrieve her Mercedes camper van from her home as she was sure the painting now blocking access to her shop was the same size as the van mattress.

Quick measurement on her soggy return confirmed the painting would slide into the back onto the bed with an inch to spare on each side.

And so the painting arrived in Mercedes style to the Dicko driveway next to Chaplin’s, where Ewart NoÍ lent caffeinated muscle and brain power to help hang it in the David Bryant room. Happy birthday Mel and thanks for trusting me with the commission.

And thanks to the Trentham community team who helped ensure that the art must get through, regardless of whether there is rain, hail or the false weather bureau promise of shine.

Five things to do in Trentham 1. Trentham Falls is one of the longest single drop waterfalls in Victoria, plunging some 32 metres over basalt columns. Trentham Falls was formed some five million years ago from rapidly cooling molten lava.

2. The 75,000-hectare Wombat State Forest lies to the south of the town, and offers activities including camping, bushwalking, mountainbike riding, horse riding, four-wheel-driving and trail bike riding.

3. Trentham has many historical sites. There are ruins and the remains of old gold diggings scattered throughout the surrounding bush.

The old police station and slab lock-up is located in Camp Street.

4. The picturesque Quarry Street Reserve and lake is a popular venue for barbeques and picnics - as well as being one of the venues for the town's popular Great Trentham Spudfest in May. 5. The Domino Trail is an easy walk following the old railway line from the Trentham heritage-listed railway station to Lyonville. It is a smooth, wide, all-weather trail suitable for walkers, pushbikes and horse riders. Motorbikes and other vehicles are not allowed.

IX kilometres outside Trentham is our little neck of the woods, or should I say Farming & Forest, called Trentham East.

Truffle time at Trentham

T'S truffle time at The Plough - and it's fabulous!

We headed to the Trentham venue last Friday and were seated by the fire lovely on a winter's day - and settled in with a glass of The Plough chardonnay and a pot of lager.

We then had a look at the menu but manager Jane had taken away the hard work and sorted out a menu with a bit of everything - including those truffles.

They come from Oakhill Truffles in Gordon and The Plough, at Trentham and Myrniong, have had a great relationship with them for more than three years now.

Entrees First up was an entree of a truffle-infused egg with mushrooms sitting on beautifully spicy lentils ($15). I really loved this dish. The oozy egg, the earthy truffle, the pops of mushroom and the spicy lentils all complemented each other perfectly. Highly recommended!

The second entree was the roast beetroot, walnuts and Meredith goat's feta salad with beetroot sorbet ($16). The dish is beautifully presented in a glass topped with micro herbs and crunchy beetroot wafers. And again, the mixed flavours and textures were just wonderful together - with that icy cold sorbet offering a real twist. Yum. Mains The mains were just as amazing. I was very happy to find myself offered the special of tagliatelle pasta and shaved truffle and parmesan ($34), while Kyle, who loves his protein, was the same with the slow cooked rolled pork with roasted spiced carrots, apple & Spanish onion salad with mustard sauce ($31).

My pasta was delicious. A simple dish to look at but creamy, plenty of truffle flavour and more than a hint of great quality parmesan. I just cleaned up the plate.

Kyle's first hit of his dish was the apple and onion salad which was the perfect topping for the pork which didn't even need a knife - it was just falling apart with not a touch of fat. If you love pork and are over pork belly - this is the dish for you. (A shout-out to a friend, Roy, you would love this!)

Desserts Desserts are all $14 and there are also house-made sorbets for $4 per scoop.

Kyle wanted the sorbets because he thought it would make a more colourful photo - always thinking about the camera angle. But who could go past the golden gaytime with honeycomb and caramelised peanuts? Not me. Firstly, it was massive - and could probably have fed four hungry people. Secondly, it was just decadent and delicious. Thirdly, it was just decadent and delicious. This is the dessert you have when you just want flavour and richness and crunch and a real sugar hit from spun sugar. Oddly, it also reminded me a little of Donald Trump - but that's probably just too much TV. Something else As I said, The Plough is celebrating truffles right now and is offering a Truffle Menu - with five truffle-inspired courses, with wine, for $95. The Trentham event is on Friday, July 26 from 7pm and the Myrniong event is on Saturday, July 20 from 12.30pm. Bookings are essential for both and you can buy tickets from www.theplough.com.au/online-store The Plough also looks after its locals and Locals' Day is Thursday with two courses for just $32 or three courses for $37. There's also three courses and the wine of the week for $42 - a really affordable night out.

The born-and-bred Trentham local, who attended Little Hampton Primary and Daylesford Secondary College, is now Trentham Community Bank’s customer relationship officer – and it's thanks to her, and others, that the bank is up and running.

Corina, whose family is well-known in the region, left briefly to attend university in Melbourne but quickly followed her heart home where she and her partner Danny Bowen, from the Woodend/Hesket area, finished building their home in 2012.

But it was a few years before that when Corina joined up with a few other locals, after Ian Williams and Ian MacBean “dipped their toes into the Daylesford Community Bank goings on”.

“I was on the original steering committee with them, Georgie Patterson and Sue Bruton. We were sitting out the back of RedBeard (Bakery) and decided there was no reason Trentham couldn’t have its own community bank and we went from there.

“We put together a steering committee of about 15 people and campaigned throughout the community, telling them what a great story it was. We had a few hurdles but everything they put in front of us we cleared.

“We did a feasibility study, and then in December 2010 we launched a prospectus which closed in January 2011 because we had raised all the funds we needed. We opened on August 19, 2011 and from there we have gone from strength to strength with community investments and building the books.”

Corina, who was working in a family-run accountancy firm, was on the board in various volunteer roles from treasurer to community investment and business development, and even chair for a while.

Then, a couple of years ago, a part-time position came up at the Kyneton branch where Corina trained up before moving to the full-time customer relationship position.

“I decided I was not going to let any more opportunities pass me by and threw my hat into the ring for the position at Trentham and got it. And it is pretty much a dream come true to work so close to home in a community I love and where I have spent and invested so much time. I love working in the business and seeing how that affects the community members. It warms my heart, a real feel-good story.”

And it’s obvious her clients love working with Corina. She was recently a finalist in the bank's statewide PEOPLE’S award – a recognition program for “exceptional actions, behaviour and customer service”.

Corina is also, not surprisingly seeing she has been there from the start, a strong advocate for the bank and its ethos.

“Our community bank has just hit the $300,000 mark for its community investment program and also returned $100,000 to shareholders through dividends.

So really, that’s $400,000 back in the community not to mention banking services themselves, which is a huge contribution to a community.

All you need to know about flu vaccines

VERYONE over the age of six months should have their flu vaccine as soon as practical, Springs Medical Centre director Dr Jon Barrell says.

Dr Barrell said while the health message surrounding the vaccine was increasingly effective it was important for as many people as possible to have the vaccine to ensure the entire community was as safe as possible from influenza.

Dr Barrell said “herd immunity” meant if the vast majority of a community was vaccinated then the amount of influenza within that herd, or community would be small. That then offers some protection to those who are unable to be vaccinated due to allergies to the vaccine components and to those who do not respond well to the vaccine.

“Herd immunity is vital for all infectious diseases and vaccines, but it is achieved through everybody having the vaccine.”

Dr Barrell said there was always conversation regarding the pros and cons of early vaccine versus late vaccine.

“The traditional argument is that the influenza season is late winter/early spring and therefore delaying the flu vaccine until late autumn/early winter has some merit. But, in this era of international travel, the influenza season is no longer quite as clear as it used to be and there have been many cases Australia-wide this year already. So, the government recommendation is people should proceed with the flu vaccine as soon as it is practical.

“Around Australia most practices are fully stocked and people should come and have their flu vaccines as soon as they are able.”

Dr Barrell said while it was difficult to be certain how long the vaccine was effective, it was between six and 12 months for most people. “The effectiveness is variable and in different groups, with different vaccines, and people of different ages, it is probably 45 to 65 per cent effective and probably lasts six to 12 months.

Perhaps its peak effectiveness can wear off in under 12 months but with the current technology that is the best we have and that is what we should do.”

Dr Barrell said for most people “broadly speaking” a booster shot was not needed but there were some specific groups for whom it was recommended. They included young children having their first-ever vaccine, where two doses a month apart were needed, and some people who were significantly immune-suppressed due to medications, who may also benefit from a booster dose.

“There is nothing wrong with a second dose, maybe six months later, but it is not government funded and it is a personal choice. People should discuss that with their doctor.”

For those people who say they never get the flu and therefore don’t need to be vaccinated, Dr Barrell says they should think twice.

“It is not a compulsory vaccination, but it’s strongly recommended for everyone over the age of six months. There are particularly high-risk groups including children aged six months to five years, people over 65 and those people with chronic heart and lung and similar conditions. Pregnant women should be vaccinated asap every pregnancy.

“Having said that, just because you don’t win Tattslotto this week doesn’t mean you can’t win next week. The fact you have not had influenza in recent times does not mean you are not at risk of getting influenza next year. All of Australia’s peak bodies recommend routine flu vaccines every year for everyone over 16 years. That’s what I do and that’s what I recommend.”

Dr Barrell said there were two vaccines available, for people aged over and under 65. “We know that older people, and we are talking broadly 65 and over, don’t always mount the same strength of immunity response to the vaccine and so the scientists have designed some variations on the vaccine. In general, for those up to 65, a four-strain quadrivalent vaccine is most appropriate and what they found in the over 65s is that a high potency three-strain trivalent vaccine is more appropriate.

That is why we are asking people their ages because that determines the vaccine that is most suitable for them.”

Dr Barrell said it was never too late to get vaccinated and “even those who were not able to access a vaccination until last September should still have their vaccine at the first opportunity".

HE rental vacancy rate for regional Victoria has been sitting at a record low of 1.2 per cent for six months now, according to the Real Estate Institute of Victoria’s monthly rental vacancy rate report.

Comparatively, the overall Victorian rate has remained at 2 per cent between December 2018 and May 2019.

The vacancy rate refers to the total number of unlet properties that are currently available to rent. A vacancy rate of 3 per cent is required for a healthy rental market so it is not surprising that a lack of accessible rental properties is a growing concern in many regional towns and regions.

The Mildura and Mallee area is home to the lowest rental vacancy rate in regional Victoria at 0.7 per cent, followed by the Wimmera region at 0.9 per cent and East Gippsland and Wellington at 1.0 per cent.

Ballarat and Central Highlands have a rental vacancy rate of 1.1 per cent, Latrobe Valley, South and West Gippsland and Bendigo and Loddon all have a rate of 1.3 per cent. The Wodonga and Ovens Murray region and the Warrnambool and Western District regions have rates of 1.4 per cent.

The rental vacancy rate in Geelong and Barwon is 1.6 per cent, while Shepparton and Goulburn have a rate of 1.7 per cent.

Findings in the Department of Health and Human Services Rental Report support concerns around low vacancy rates, revealing that the number of new rental lettings in Victoria decreased by 14.2 per cent in the quarter to March 31, 2019.

Lending to residential property investors in Victoria was $5.548 billion in the March quarter 2019, 24.8 per cent lower than in the March quarter 2018.

The report also found that the proportion of affordable rental lettings in regional Victoria decreased to 44.8 per cent in the March quarter 2019, compared with 47.1 per cent in the December quarter 2018 and 51.3 per cent in the March quarter 2018.

Bags of Bags Things that I love.

Make a list of your own but mine includes: fixing where possible, or at least getting someone to fix it, repurposing objects or materials and keeping things simple and practical, oh yeah, vodka and chocolate. I can't leave them off the list.

A repurposed bag I bought for last Christmas ticks my boxes so I thought I would share it with you as I did with some friends. They received them as Christmas gifts.

Not expensive but practical.

These bags are bags of art as well as generously sized for groceries. They are tough, waterproof and made locally from feed bags. Each bag has a pin up animal and my choices include a perky pheasant, two of a cockatoo and a big rooster. I matched the friend’s personality to the bag.

Why pick up a big-brand shopping bag when you can have one that makes you smile, helps the environment and keeps you original?

My next favourite bag is a book bag. These are repurposed from books that have no home and no future. Using vintage fabrics for the lining and reused handles, no bag could be the same. They are handmade with love in Melbourne and have been used as daily appendages.

These same girls also used old records to use as the sides of bags, tea towels and my personal fave, because I do like texture, the paperbark bag. Sheets of paperbark are laminated to use as a subsistent material. Paperbark trees, often found on road verges, are ethically helped with their already peeling process.

War on Waste gave us a desperate look at the pollution and waste we generate as humans and the dumping of it in oceans and ever-increasing landfills. Every little bit that we do to help reuse, recycle, replant will help slow this down.

A moving experience

No matter how carefully you plan your garden, or indeed like a particular tree or shrub, there always comes a time when, for many different reasons, it really should be moved to a different spot in your garden. Well, now's the time to do it.

Deciduous plants, whilst in the depth of their dormancy could be likened to our being under anaesthetic, can take a lot more abuse than evergreens. You will need to take extra care not to disturb the roots unduly, or they could suffer a setback from the shift.

To lift deciduous trees, work around the trunk, about 60cm to a metre out depending on the size of the tree, using a sharp spade to cut through the surface roots. Then gradually work down deeper, cutting any roots you may encounter until it's possible to get the spade beneath and gently lift the tree clear of the soil.

Don't be too concerned if the soil starts to fall from around the roots as long as they aren't allowed to dry out. In fact it would probably be an advantage to pack compost and potting mix around the roots to give them a better start, particularly if, like mine, your garden consists mostly of clay.

Evergreens need to be transplanted with a ball of earth packed tightly around the root system to minimise the impact of the move. It is also always a good idea to prepare evergreens for a couple of weeks before the move. If the soil is dry through lack of rain, it's best to thoroughly water around the plant to lessen the chance of the soil breaking away in the shift.

With larger plants, and especially in dry weather, I find that a little extra preparation beforehand brings better results. It simply means digging a narrow trench at the outer line of the foliage around the tree. One side at a time and a week apart.

Water regularly into the trenches to keep the root ends moist. This will do much to lessen the shock of the move.

To prevent the root ball breaking up, especially if the tree is to be moved any distance, or not replanted immediately, slide it carefully onto a sheet of sacking or preferably hessian, and wrap it up tightly, binding it with twine or light rope - in much the same way granny used to wrap the Christmas pudding.

You can then plant the tree in its new position, bag and all, provided it's of synthetic material. As long as the string is cut away at the top to prevent eventual strangulation of the plant, the sacking will soon rot sufficiently to allow the roots to penetrate.

Be sure to water the soil well in both positions before the move. Water it in well after transplanting even if it's raining, to ensure that the soil is pack down all around the roots. As a precaution it's also best to stake the plant, at least until you are sure it is established.

Winter colour

Winter in the garden isn't necessarily a colourless time, with many trees, shrubs and perennials putting on a show during the colder months. Not always, necessarily, with flowers either although the Japanese sasanqua camellias, such as the espaliered above left, are putting on a great show. It could also be berries and fruit such as the case with the Golden King variegated holly, ilex x altaclerensis variety, above right.

In these sculptures a sense of humour, an engagement with Australiana, an interest in scale and a concern for the environment are often the underlying themes and inspiration.

Usually between 20 to 70 centimetres in height, the Malmsbury resident’s small-scale works are often made in bronze and have been exhibited extensively throughout Australia. The artist’s 13 solo shows and participation in close to 60 group exhibitions have also included the display of large-scale sculptures that are often formed from steel. This less-expensive material has allowed the scale of Rix’s work to exceed seven metres. His ability to envision and execute enormous works has led to many impressive public sculpture commissions and inclusions into a large number of outdoor exhibitions and sculpture prizes, from which he has received five accolades in the last five years alone.

Rix’s first solo exhibition at Australian Galleries, Chivalry, Myths and Dreaming presents a stunning series of works in varying scale, dating from 2016 to present.

For this exhibition, Rix has created an installation of three large-scale trees, titled Remnant Forest. “I love trees and I am fascinated by their ability to survive adverse conditions and the beautiful bones they leave behind.”

In conjunction with the exhibition, Rix’s 3.5-metre high sculpture in Corten steel, St George and the Dragon 3, will be on display at the Australian Galleries Sculpture Park at Porcupine Ridge. This is the first time an exhibition will extend from the Melbourne gallery to rural Victoria.

Chivalry, Myths and Dreaming is on until July 14 at Derby Street, Collingwood.

The budget funds roads/bridges/footpaths totalling $7.258m. Our share in Coliban Ward is only $435k or 6 per cent. Coliban Ward contributes about 16 per cent of council's rates and is by far the shire's fastest growing ward. The $435k covers Bowen, Gamble and Forest streets and Church and Cranneys lanes.

The budget funds other capital works of $2.584m. Our share is only $186.5k or 7 per cent. Only two projects for Coliban Ward are included in the budget - $150k for Quarry Street reserve shelter and toilet and $36.5k to complete the Trentham kindergarten works. This paltry allocation follows the investment of $24.8m in nonroads works in the other wards over the past five years while works to the value of $1m were carried out in Coliban.

Council's delivery of budgeted capital works is highly problematic. In recent years there has been a significant underspend compared to budget, with many projects either not started or incomplete and carrying over to the next financial year - for example Trentham's streetscape works budgeted in 2018/19 and not yet started.

Council simply isn't geared up to deliver what it promises in its glossy budgets.

When adopting the 2019/20 budget it was praised as being "predictable" and providing "continuity". Very apt descriptions...as this budget perpetuates the inequity inflicted on Coliban Ward over many years.

This ongoing inequity is difficult to reconcile with councillors' legal obligation to consider the diversity of interests and needs of the whole community; observe principles of good governance and act with integrity; and participate in the responsible allocation of the resources of council through the annual budget.

Meanwhile much-needed infrastructure in Coliban Ward appears years away at best...including the "suspended" Trentham Community Centre and upgrade of Trentham's sporting facilities.

IMMY Rix’s sculptures often relate to personal experiences and familiar objects. Having lived within both natural and farmed Australian landscapes throughout his life, rebellious kangaroos, machine-horse hybrids, playful sheep and utilitarian objects have inevitably been cast as the actors of his narrative-based works.

EPBURN Shire Council recently adopted its 2019/20 budget.

During the compulsory public consultation period, council heard 21 submissions from across the entire Hepburn Shire. None of them were deemed worthy of inclusion in the budget.

St Michael's artworks on show at Springs

RADE five students from St Michael's Primary School at Daylesford will have their artworks hung at the Springs Medical Centre for a year from September.

School art teacher Leona Ryan said the project fitted in really well with the school's visual arts curriculum and was a great way for students to showcase their creative ability.

"They had to think about not only their artworks but also the audience. We had to think who would be in Springs Medical Centre and that they may be patients who are not feeling very well.

"The students were tasked with thinking about what would make people feel happier and better."

Leona said the students had been asked to submit portraits of people they believed had had a positive effect on other human beings, famous or not.

"They chose people like Queen Elizabeth but also a lady who invented special cupcakes, someone who invented fishing rods and even J.K. Rowling.

"From the kids' point of view these are all people who are important and who have contributed in a positive manner to humanity. They have put a lot of thought into it and are taking it very seriously."

Ms Ryan said the students were mostly working in black marker, pencil and chalk or oil pastels with the backgrounds a collage representing things their choice of person had contributed to. There is also a written component.

"They are mixed media pieces and will all be professionally framed with the opening night on September 10. The students are also part of putting the exhibition together which is quite exciting."

Funding for the project comes from Springs Medical Centre, Daylesford Rotary Club and Bendigo Bank.

"From the kids' point of view these are all people who are important and who have contributed in a positive manner to humanity. They have put a lot of thought into it and are taking it very seriously."

Clunes rallies for its newsagency owners

OLLOWING the extensive damage caused by an attempted burglary in early March, the town's only newsagency business is now struggling as the heritage building repair process enters its fifth month.

In response, on June 22, more than 200 Clunes residents attended a fundraising dinner held in support of newsagents Craig and Cynthia Drewer, pictured left with their daughter Georgia. Auction items worth $15,000, donated from as far afield as Melbourne, and ticket and raffle sales, raised more than $20,000 for the business.

Bendigo Bank board member and former Cameron Ward councillor Tim Hayes said in 20 years he had not seen such a great response to a need in Clunes. "It's very impressive."

The highlight of the evening was the auction of a football club jumper, signed by the recent winning St Kilda team including new recruit, Clunes talent, Nick Hind, which sold for $2250 after an active contest between two locals.

Craig and Cynthia thanked everyone for their help saying "our thanks will never be enough - the time and effort people have donated, it's mindblowing...we're so grateful."

Addressing the gathering, the building's owners Ken and Margaret Gibson, spoke warmly of the Drewers in acknowledging the stress of the past few months and thanked the town. The Drewers and Gibsons are hopeful the rebuild of the premises, including the reinstatement of the Bendigo Bank services, will happen soon. In the interim, the Drewers continue to operate their business from the Club Hotel.

Work restoring the verandahs on shops adjacent to the newsagency building commenced this week.

Spirited boost

ISTILLERIES are giving a spirited boost to the property markets in regional Victorian towns – including Kyneton - according to an analysis by the Real Estate Institute of Victoria.

REIV president Robyn Waters said the study showed that median house prices have soared over recent years in regional towns where distilleries have been established.

Ms Waters said that, in some cases, distilleries have become the social and leisure hub of the town and have become the anchor for other complementary businesses such as restaurants and clothing shops.

“Take Healesville for example, the home of Four Pillars Gin, where the median house price has increased 37.54 per cent in the past four years, going from $435,500 in the 12 months to March 31, 2015 to $599,000 in the 12 months to March 31, 2019.

“There has also been strong median growth in Bright, where the Reed and Co Distillery opened in 2016, and Kyneton where Animus Distillery was founded in 2015.”

ROASTED PUMPKIN + CARROT SOUP WITH PESTO - Teresa Cutter What's great about it.

This is a soup that I regularly make when the weather gets a little colder outside.

The recipe is from my #1 bestselling cookbook Purely Delicious. The roasting intensifies the delicious flavour, allowing a delicate sweetness that comes through the finished dish. I vary how I serve my soup depending on what I feel like at the time or what I have in the fridge. One of my favourite toppings is a green goddess pesto made from coriander, garlic, lime and pumpkin seed that allows for that extra flavour punch and anti-inflammatory benefits. (Immune boosting / Paleo / Vegan) Ingredients (Serves 4) 1kg Jap pumpkin 500g organic carrots 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil Generous pinch of sea salt 1 litre water plus extra if needed 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger 1 teaspoon fresh grated turmeric You can also use 1 teaspoon Healthy Chef Turmeric Latte Method 1. Preheat your oven to 180°C. 2. Peel and chop pumpkin into small chunks and place onto a lined baking tray.

3. Wash carrots and chop roughly with the skin. Place onto a separate lined baking tray.

4. Drizzle the olive oil between the two trays.

5. Season each tray with sea salt.

6. Mix the oil and seasoning with your fingers through the vegetables.

7. Roast for 45 minutes or until vegetables are cooked through and caramelised.

8. Combine pumpkin and carrot in a high-performance blender like a Vitamix.

9. Add the water and ginger and turmeric if using.

10. Blend until smooth.

11. Add another cup of water to adjust consistency if required.

12. Serve hot soup with your choice of serving suggestions and feel the nourishment.

For a creamy soup, you can also serve with a light drizzle of coconut cream or organic natural yoghurt.

Notes and inspiration To make the green goddess pesto: Combine 2 bunches of coriander, 1 clove garlic, juice of ½ lime, a handful of pumpkin seeds and a little salt and pepper in a food processor or high-performance blender like a Vitamix. Process for about 30 seconds or until the mixture is finely chopped. Drizzle in 3 tablespoons of olive oil and mix through. Keeps in the fridge for about one week.

Repurposed fashion

ANCY an outfit made from baling twine or sheep ear tags?

An exhibition of imaginative garments created from farming materials repurposed into fashionable and unique clothing is on show in Kyneton.

Direct from the catwalks of the Elmore Field Days, the wildly unique dresses, hats and other wearable objects were created as part of the event’s Wearable Agricultural Art competition.

The challenge for the participating young designers in the Wearable Agricultural Art Competition is to create wearable art made from materials found on farms or farming-related industries and transform them into wearable objects. Designers can use anything from baling twine to sheep ear tags to create garments that are judged on their creativity and individuality.

The 2017/18 entries from the Wearable Agricultural Art Competition are on show at Kyneton Museum until September 8. The Ag Art exhibition is full of colour and various textures and will showcase the interesting ways to repurpose agricultural materials.

A Walk of Art kids’ workshop Meanwhile, a "shoe blinging" workshop for children which includes entry to the museum’s Ag Art exhibition will be held on Thursday, July 4 at 11am at the museum.

ITH the ban on e-waste going into kerbside bins commencing on July 1, Grampians Central West Waste & Resource Recovery has produced a new guide to help people purchase, look after, repair and finally dispose of their unwanted or broken electrical and electronic devices.

The growth of e-waste is a global issue but it is also a local problem. Australians are amongst the highest users and disposers of technology and that means more e-waste. In Australia e-waste is growing up to three times faster than general waste.

Grampians Central West WRRG have developed a new resource that is now available on their website and in hard copy. The e-waste guide starts by helping people make smarter purchasing choices which means considering more than just the price of an item. Understanding how to maintain and care for a product will help it last longer. Mobile phones are a great example of where looking after the battery can help the longevity of the phone.

With the repair movement also growing in popularity, people are realising that just throwing something in the bin is not always the best option – particularly when some devices have some valuable materials in them that can be recycled.

Being able to repair items means they can be kept longer through regular maintenance and servicing either at home or through a volunteer repair café in a local community or a professional repairer. People are advised to consider the appropriate option for repair based on their skills and qualifications.

The new e-waste booklet has been produced to provide the community with a comprehensive guide to dealing with a range of e-waste issues. Music about the writing process

ADIA Phillips always liked writing and a few years ago she started writing lyrics as a way to express her thoughts. The 17-year-old taught herself the guitar and uses that as the music behind her lyrical melodies. She chatted with Donna Kelly.

Donna: What do you like to sing or write about and why?

Nadia: I usually sing about personal experiences or feelings. I write music to work through my own personal problems and to reach out to others who might also connect with the same things.

Donna: Where do you perform?

Nadia: So far I’ve performed in and around my home town of Castlemaine. At the moment I’m trying to focus my energy on getting through Year 12 at school, so rather than live gigs I’ve been recording at home and uploading to SoundCloud. I’m planning to take a gap year next year and really get into my music and live performance in the region.

Donna: Do you think singing and performing will be part of your future?

Nadia: I will always have music as my outlet. To be singing and writing as a profession is a great thought, and one I’ll give a go for sure.

Donna: Is your family musical?

Nadia: Yes, my dad John has played in many bands throughout his life. He’s explored a range of musical instruments and platforms. He’s been a big inspiration and provides me with great encouragement.

Donna: Can anyone sing or is it a natural talent?

Nadia: Anyone can sing with practise and self-confidence. It’s something that you just have to believe in yourself to do. I used to hate my voice but have got used to it. I now appreciate it after hearing it so often.

Donna: What do you think about shows like The Voice?

Nadia: I think talent shows provide good opportunities for public recognition.

They really suit people who are more about performance than songwriting. For me, music is more about the writing process.

Volleyball results

N AN extremely tight game lasting 90 minutes, Tonna and Co won against Charlieeeee.

The first set was Tonna and Co with 25 to Charlieeeee 23, second set - 22 to 25, third set - 25 to 27, fourth set - 25 to 18 and fifth set - 15 to 5.

Many of the players on both teams were playing volleyball for the first time with some six of the 14 players from primary schools and another four from the Daylesford Secondary College's year 7/8.

A new junior competition is starting on Monday, July 15 at 6 pm at the ARC in Smith Street, Daylesford, with the existing social competition moving to 6.45pm and the open division competition at 7.30pm.

Meanwhile, in the open competition the Terminators defeated District United with the first set - 25 to 21, second set - 25 to 20, third set - 23 to 25 and the fourth set - 25 to 15.

The first set saw Will Hughes pound the ball into the floor with his spikes and set the opposition reeling. Will did get blocked out a couple of times by the tall opposition.

The second set saw young gun Phillip Metevelis turn the tide of the set with nine serving points in a row.

The third set saw District mount a serving and front court fight back with some great setting to their spikers.

The fourth set had Terminators take an early lead with strong blocking from Brian Holding and Alex Armstrong to blanket the District spikers.

Daylesford Volleyball is looking at starting a women’s competition in February 2020 at the ARC, bringing the number of teams up to 16.

Pick me, pick me...

Just sayin’...

AD a call last Monday. One of the ones you don't want.

Mum had taken a tumble. Not just a bit of a spill, but a backward flip onto her concrete porch. Trying to pick a lemon...

Oddly, it was her calling. She lives in a retirement village in south-east Melbourne and had managed to get inside and call the emergency nurse, which was good. But the nurse arrived, checked her out and then said she was off to organise an ambulance - and left mum, with her head bleeding, on her own.

So mum, who has just turned 87 (and thanks for some very nice Facebook messages), called me in Glenlyon. She said she was worried she might pass out, was scared at being on her own, and didn't know how long the nurse and ambulance would be. I kept her talking and asked Kyle to call a friend of hers who lives in the same village. Judy was quickly on her way - but I reckon I spoke to mum for at least 20 minutes, all up, before she arrived.

Now, I am not a medical professional but I still don't understand why a nurse would leave an elderly woman with a head injury on her own. Especially when there was a perfectly good landline ready to call 000.

Anyway, my sister, who lives down that way, eventually answered her phone and made her way to the hospital where x-rays found the head was OK but there were a couple of small vertebrae problems in mum's neck and back. Not great, but nothing life-threatening.

And so we headed down Tuesday, computers on board, to get involved. (This edition of The Local is brought to you via my mum's dining table.)

The only thing is, it is really hard to get involved. I visited mum twice a day for four days before we had to head back home for the weekend - for things we physically need to do to make sure The Local comes out. But do you think my visits coincided with any medical professional turning up? No. Well, once. With one doctor who thought because mum was old if he yelled and smiled a lot that would work.

There have been physiotherapists, occupational therapists, doctors, surgeons...and they all managed to sneak in when no family members were around. It's like they wait in the wings and when the pesky family members leave, who might ask questions, in they swoop.

This afternoon I called mum and she was quite upset because she had been told she would be heading to respite care on Monday. I don't even know what respite care is. Last I heard she was going to rehab. So I called the hospital and talked to a nurse on the ward who assured me that mum would not be going anywhere until the next of kin were notified.

That's fine, I said, but I don't want her moved until I get back down there on Monday.

Of course, I was told, you will be the first to know.

Not sure what that means but I think we'd better head off early. Just sayin'...

ANT to take part in an innovative storytelling project to promote gender equality? Get involved in the Living in a Gendered World project and take part in storytelling workshops on gender.

I am not sure. I suppose advertising pop-ups and social media apps. Nowadays I reckon the world's gone completely mad, particularly in the mobile phone department. Did you know that the good folk in the Philippines look at their phones on average for six hours a day?

People here in Australia are becoming just as bad. They are just not turning off.

I saw an advert on TV the other day advertising a mobile phone that was "with you 24/7" - it showed someone falling asleep with their phone in their hand. Now have I been listening to the wrong news feeds? Don’t they say keep your phone out of the bedroom, the blue light stops you sleeping?

Another advert I saw had a couple of complete strangers in a bar. One puts his head in his hands because he has run out of power and then this nice looking bird next to him gives him a smile and places her phone upside down on the bar. He smiles back and puts his phone on top of hers and gets a charge. Yes, a phone that gives another phone charge simply by touching the two together. Talk about sexual innuendo.

In my day the best I could do was to run into the bar on some rum-fuelled fantasy with cables in my hand asking "who wants to give me a jump?".

To be honest, I am spending more time on my phone lately with this whole Instagram posting world. I mean the paper should be sufficient social media but no, I have been encouraged (screaming and kicking) to produce one post a day, but my life just isn’t that interesting.

As evidenced by the photo opposite!

Why would anyone be interested in an update about a grouchy mid-life crisis infused man's view of the world? Macedon Ranges Shire Community Wellbeing director Karen Stevens said the highlight of the event would be the public performance, where participants will perform a short, personal story at a community storytelling night at the Bluestone Theatre in Kyneton.

The storytelling workshops will run once a month in September, October and November and the community storytelling night will be held in early December.

The workshops will be facilitated by experienced local facilitator Kate Lawrence from Story Wise.

Storytelling is an ancient human art and a powerful way to explore personal experiences and complex issues. The process of developing a personal story can reveal universal insights and allows the broader community to explore challenging subjects on an emotional and intellectual level.
