Life membership

OB Forbes has received a life membership from Glenlyon CFA after almost 60 years as a volunteer.

Bob, pictured with his wife of 63 years, Shirley, has fought hundreds of bushfires, blazes in haystacks, cars and houses.

“I think the CFA is a great organisation that helps people in the country; being involved is my way of giving back to the community,” Bob said.

Bob began his association with the CFA in 1962 when he joined the Girgarre CFA. Almost 30 years later, in 1990, he joined the Glenlyon CFA after moving to Wheatsheaf.

The 84-year-old has fought major bushfires at Bright, Tocumwal, Rushworth and Heathcote and says the saddest times were seeing dead livestock after fires, and people suffering after losing their homes.

Bob says the community is a much better place thanks to volunteers doing their bit, and through the CFA he has made some lifelong friendships.

Currently Bob is residing with Shirley at Hepburn Health’s Trentham Aged Care Facility after a period of ill-health. But he is keen to return home as soon as possible.

Bob and Shirley have three children, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Record artworks at Trentham Show

Glenlyon sculptor Sam Bloomfield won the Best in Show Award and the inaugural Matt Harding Technical Excellence Award for his magnificent armoured stag’s head.

There were $5700 in prizes awarded on the night by a distinguished panel of judges who praised the overall high standard of works.

But volunteers were also in the spotlight, with art show committee members Jill McCallum and Bette McLaren honoured for their tireless work and countless hours contributed over the last 11 years.

The memory of the late David Bryant, who with wife Janine had been a strong show supporter, was also honoured, with the art show committee buying a portrait of David exhibited by award-winning portraitist Al Dickerson to donate to Janine.

Opening the show, journalist/artist Peter Young, pictured in front of the crowd above, praised the creativity, energy and courage of participating artists.

Noting that research shows exhibition visitors spend up to 30 seconds looking at a piece of art before moving on, he challenged browsers to engage more deeply and ask themselves what they liked in pieces that caught the eye.

He also appealed to visitors to ignore economic rationalists who know the price of everything but the value of nothing and to buy art that appeals to them.

“You reward the artist, you reward the community because this exhibition reinvests the money the show makes into the local community, but above all, you reward yourself as art nurtures the soul,” he said.

“In a year from now, you will be enjoying living with original art long after you have forgotten the price you paid.

“And who knows, in 30 or 40 years your descendants will be squabbling over your estate arguing about who should get to keep a much-loved family heirloom.”

Reconciliation

OCAL Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people are being asked to help Macedon Ranges Shire Council develop its first Reconciliation Action Plan.

The plan aims to support improved outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Macedon Ranges Shire.

People who identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander can express their interest by calling Community Partnerships Officer Stephen Hiley on 5422 0286 or by emailing shiley@mrsc.vic.gov.au The plan will reflect the reconciliation priorities of Traditional Owners and local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and Council will engage in community consultation with these groups later in the year. Following the drafting of the plan, the entire community will be able to have their say on the Reconciliation Action Plan.

Chief executive officer Margot Stork said the plan would also enable all residents to celebrate and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and culture, and to contribute to reconciliation.

“We are keen to have local Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people join this working group and help shape the plan.”

Woodend Racecourse: a part of area's heritage

A

S YOU drive into Woodend from Tylden, a great portion of Forest Street is dominated by the Woodend Racecourse and Recreation Reserve. There are all types of buildings and facilities scattered around the site ranging from netball courts and the Buffalo Sports Stadium to jumps and sand covered training arenas for the local pony club.

But the reserve also has a very interesting history as the former site of the Woodend Race Club competition track. During its many years of operation Woodend was one of the most popular thoroughbred racing venues outside of Melbourne and it was not poor crowd attendance that forced its closure in 1982.

The Woodend Race Club was founded in 1860, barely eight years after the first land sales led to development in the fledgling village, and the first meetings were held at nearby Golf Course Hill. By the 1890s the club was looking at relocating to the Forest Street site which had originally been established as a military training reserve.

The first public race event took place there in January 1903 and by 1924 the site had grown to 26 hectares and boasted a track length of eight and a half furlongs (1.7 kilometres). It proved to be a very popular venue for locals and visitors alike with meetings held on Wednesdays and Saturdays and by the 1940s, harness racing and greyhound sprints were also held there.

However, by the early 1980s and despite its popularity, the Victorian Racecourse Licenses Board moved to close the track. The Victorian Government had decreed that there should only be one major racecourse in the area and so the Woodend Race Club, after 122 years in existence, was amalgamated with Kyneton Racing Club. The last meeting was conducted on Thursday, March 18, 1982 and the final race was the Chinka Steel Progressive Handicap. The last ever horse over the Woodend finish line, several lengths behind the rest of the field, was the six-year-old gelding Storm Relic.

“Many of the big crowd present,” noted an article in The Telegraph, “had a lump in their throat and a tear in their eyes”. “The two clerks of the course (Mrs. Chris Turnbull and Mr. Ron McKenzie) had appropriately donned black coats to replace their traditional red to lead the horses into the final race.”

In large urban areas when similar sporting and community reserves are closed, development tends to quickly flatten everything and build over what remains. This is not so common with rural sites where memories are not promptly erased but simply shifted, added to and choked with gorse and blackberries. This is certainly the case with the Woodend Racecourse and even today, nearly 40 years on, much remains to look at and wonder about.

The track itself is relatively complete, though the back straight now serves as part of the Five Mile Creek walking track, there is also a photo finish and race caller’s tower, vet’s room, jockey weigh-in shed and the 45-metre long covered spectator stand built in the 1940s. Unfortunately, it is in poor condition and surrounded by temporary fencing to keep the curious at bay.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s Planning and Environment director Angela Hughes said the council’s heritage consultants had identified that the Woodend Racecourse was potentially of local heritage significance.

“The site demonstrates the importance of this form of sport as a recreational activity within the rural community of Woodend and the broader Macedon Ranges Shire community for a long period. At the upcoming ordinary council meeting, on April 24, council will consider exhibiting an amendment to protect the site through the Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme.

“Should council endorse the heritage documentation, the community will have the opportunity to make submissions on this proposal through the planning scheme amendment exhibition process.”

Daylesford Singers Festival Volunteer Mixing money with music, we come to a Town Hall built from rock-solid golden funds. Even the Rococo brackets holding up the balcony speak of faith in tradition married to innovation and risk, and seem to glorify the possibilities of eternal underground wealth.

The seats fill with conversations rising and falling to the heartbeat of world’s music. Anointed with longing and lovesong, we remember dissenters who made us, who brought us to life, who taught us the languages of faith, belief, rebellion and irresistible force.

At festivals like this we celebrate those wins. The Town Hall, one hundred and sixty years old, rocks as feet stamp, hands clap raucously, and the more daring dance.

I stand near the door, my raffle-ticket seller’s bumbag rattling with coin, crackling with paper currency.

Jennie Fraine Jennie Fraine grew up along the Murray, has lived in five countries, and is still restless. She currently lives in Ballarat. The poem commemorates the Singers Festivals in Daylesford where she did indeed volunteer for several years.

The organisation is looking for volunteers for the local heritage railway and the day will be a chance to meet the crew, take a train ride and enjoy a light lunch.

Volunteers manager Ross Bullock said life was busier than ever at the Daylesford Spa Country Railway.

"The group has enjoyed a record year of passenger numbers travelling on its lovingly-restored heritage rail motor trains, which operate each weekend between Daylesford and Bullarto.

"The enthusiastic group of volunteers last year completed a fastidious restoration of another of the blue-and-gold Victorian Railways 'Walker' rail cars which provided service to the Daylesford community until the branch line's closure in 1978. The group also constructed a stopping platform adjacent to the Passing Clouds Winery, and this year has just received a grant to restore some of the railway tracks in the Bullarto Station precinct."

Ross said like any non-profit community group the railway welcomed and needed volunteers to operate and further develop.

"There are plenty of ways local residents can become involved, including offering their building, painting, welding, metalwork or mechanical skills, gardening and site maintenance, retail sales or catering experience. There are of course also opportunities to undertake training in rail safety and crew operations for the trains themselves.

"Residents of the district who are passionate about the care and maintenance of local history and the grounds and environment around the Daylesford, Musk and Bullarto areas are likely to particularly enjoy getting involved with this group. Track maintenance crews frequently undertake working bees in the picturesque Wombat Forest which the railway line winds through"

Springs donates AED to Xistance

PRINGS Medical Centre has donated an automated external defibrillator (AED) to Daylesford’s Xistance Gym.

Springs director Dr Jon Barrell said Xistance Gym was one of a number of organisations, including Trentham Football Netball Club and the School of Forestry in Creswick, helping the medical centre with its unique Spring In your Step (SIS) program.

“Springs has been thrilled with the success of the SIS program and with the cooperation of local enterprises – and is keen to contribute back to the development of those individual enterprises.

“Here, specifically at Xistance Gym, Sam Redlich and her team have been sensational in cooperating with the SIS program and we thought the donation of an automated external defibrillator for permanent use here at the gym – hopefully never to be used but here if ever needed, was a good thing.”

Dr Barrell said the feedback from SIS participants had been very positive with people repeatedly commenting on their improved wellness and fitness, and higher tolerance to exercise. They also loved the social benefit of feeling part of a group and many continued their exercise beyond the program, he said.

“It’s a very unique and special program and I am not aware of other programs like this in Australia. It is fabulous to be able to bring exercise and rehabilitation to rural communities that otherwise would not have access to the programs or the allied health professionals involved. SIS is an amazing initiative and I hope it continues.”

Xistance owner Sam Redlich said when she first opened her gym her ethos was that it was “a gym for everybody”.

“Then slowly over time we made a connection with Springs Medical Centre and so to me SIS is just an enhancement of my original idea for the gym.

“SIS allows people who might be a bit more sensitive about being at a gym to feel safe and OK about exercise – and that means they are more likely to continue with that exercise.”

Sam said while SIS participants started within their own community, they soon became part of the wider gym community and many of them had stayed on well after the initial program had ended.

She said the donation of the AED was “awesome – although in seven years here working with older adults we have never had any issues”.

“But, to me, it is a testament of support from Springs Medical Centre, a lovely act of mutual respect, and it also shows we are here for the long term. We are grounded and not going anywhere.”

Dr Barrell said while everyone should have some first aid training, it was important for people to realise that if they ever saw anyone drop to the ground, they would never do the wrong thing by opening an AED. “It gives you all the instructions you need and with every second important, there is a good chance you may save a life.”

Robert happy to be back at Hepburn House

ETURNING to work at Hepburn House was a lot like coming back home for Robert Thacker.

Having worked as a cook at Hepburn House, a governmentfunded aged care facility, for four years, Robert went to work at a larger facility to gain more experience.

Eighteen months later, Robert happily returned to work at Hepburn House.

Good Friday Appeal

HILE many were enjoying a long weekend, Tania Grant and her team of volunteers were busy raising funds for the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

Tania has been the Daylesford area manager for 16 years and over that time she and her volunteers have raised a huge $175,000.

"I would like to extend my thanks to my team of volunteers that consists of family, friends and acquaintances who continually put in the effort to ensure that the appeal is a success year after year.

"It's been an amazing journey and I'm very honoured to be able to assist in raising funds for many children and families in their times of need."

Anzac Day services - Thursday, April 25 Kyneton

Anzac Day begins with the Dawn Service at the Cenotaph at 6am. Begin assembling about 5.45am.

The service will be followed by the traditional Gunfire Breakfast which will be held at the Kyneton RSL club rooms. A gold coin donation is requested for the breakfast and all monies collected will go to providing welfare support for veterans.

The Anzac Day march in Kyneton will form up at the corner of Yaldwyn and Mollison streets at 9.30am and step off at 9.45am. The march will proceed to the Cenotaph where the ANZAC Day ceremony will be conducted. Following the service the march will continue along Mollison Street to the RSL. Trentham

An Anzac Day march and ceremony will take place in Trentham. The parade will form up at the Town Square at 11.30am and march to the Cenotaph at the intersection of High and Market streets. The ceremony will be followed by refreshments at the Trentham Neighbourhood Centre. Earlier in the day the Dawn Service will be conducted at 6am at the Cenotaph followed by breakfast at the CFA Station.

Malmsbury

An Anzac Day march and ceremony will be conducted at Malmsbury at 8am at the Memorial Gardens.

Eganstown

Mt Macedon

All roads to Memorial Cross in Mt Macedon will be closed to traffic on the morning of April 25, with free bus services operating for transport to the Mt Macedon Anzac Day Dawn Service.

A continual shuttle bus service will also operate from Tony Clarke Recreation Reserve in Macedon, with the first bus departing at 4.15am and the last bus departing at 5.20am. People attempting to travel to the ceremony by car will be directed to park at Tony Clarke Recreation Reserve. The only public access to Mt Macedon will be via bus, with cars not permitted along Cameron Drive between 4am and 7am on Anzac Day. Clunes

There will be a Dawn Service at 6am at the Clunes RSL Hall followed by a Remembrance Service at the Clunes Cemetery at 8.30am. The March will take place with the step-off time at 10.45 from the RSL in Fraser Street to the Cenotaph located on the corner of Fraser and Service streets. The commemoration and wreath laying will take place at the Cenotaph at 11am. Members of the sub branch will then march up Service Street to Bailey Street to the Town Hall for a service. All members of the public are welcome to attend. Refreshments will follow in the RSL Hall with two-up at the National Hotel from 1.30pm.

An Anzac Day ceremony will be held at 9am on April 25 at the Eganstown memorial in Old Main Road, Eganstown. Guest speaker will be Brigadier David Smith and soloist will be Sallie Harvey.

Taradale

An Anzac Day service and march will be held at Taradale at 1.30pm.

Woodend

A march will be held at 11.15am on the High Street service road (between Brooke and Anslow streets), followed by a ceremony at Woodend RSL Road closures will be in place from 11am–12.45pm around Brooke Street and the High Street service Road, Anslow Street from Schaw Street to High Street.

10th Lake Daylesford Swim The swim was held on Sunday, March 3, 2019. There were a record 81 swimmers, with beautiful conditions.

The event is a fundraiser for Fundasaun Lafaek Diak in East Timor. A total of $2700 was raised including $434 in donations.

At 9.30am there will be a Wreath Laying at the Soldier’s Section of the Creswick Cemetery. At 10am there will be Wreath Laying at the Memorial Stones at RSL Hall. For the march, assemble near the Splash Park on Albert Street at 10.15am for a 10.30am step off. At 11am at the Cenotaph the Creswick Remembrance Service will be held.

From noon to 6pm there will be a barbeque and twoup at the American Hotel. At 2pm, the Creswick Brass Band will perform its Salute to the ANZACs concert at the Creswick Town Hall.

Kingston

At 9am there will be wreath laying at the Kingston Avenue of Honour Memorial.

Daylesford

The Dawn Service will be held at 6.30am at the Cenotaph followed by a Gunfire Breakfast at the RSL. The March will set off from the Daylesford Town Hall at 10.15am for a 10.30am service at the Cenotaph.

Hepburn

A service will be held at the Soldiers Memorial at 8.30am.

Cambodian Kids Foundation needs locals' help

D

ONNA Cooper has been inducted onto the Hepburn Shire Council’s Heather Mutimer International Women’s Day Honour Roll – but the very cause which saw her name added is under threat.

Donna, who runs Color Me Cooper clothing and accessory stores in both Daylesford and Woodend, started the Cambodian Kids Foundation with her daughter Sam. It came about when Sam asked her parents if she could take part in her school’s debutante ball. They agreed but offered an option of travel to anywhere in the world – with her mum.

Sam chose Cambodia and while there they witnessed not only the poverty but also the orphanage “tourism” and the direction of money from well-meaning people into scams.

As they drove to the airport to go home, Sam refused to board the plane, saying she wanted to stay and help. Donna made a promise to get involved once they were back in Australia.

Sam knew her mother kept her promises and also knew she was a woman, who once on a mission, did not stop. When the children were young they were often without a decent meal but Donna wanted more for her family.

She started selling clothes her children were no longer wearing at the Daylesford Market, and then returned with the best quality clothes she could find at opportunity shops. Eventually she had enough to open Color Me Cooper in Woodend in 1999.

Donna also started buying overseas but soon realised she was only thinking about her own family. "I never thought about the women I was buying from or how their families were doing or if their children were in school.

“But then we were doing really well and I started thinking about the people I was buying from. So we set up some really good businesses in Indonesia, Thailand and Nepal, and really helped those people to sell to many buyers, not just me.”

After returning from Cambodia, Donna kept her promise and the family started the Cambodian Kids Foundation, first raising money selling armbands embossed with the CKF logo Sam had created on the plane ride home. That was in 2006, the same year Color Me Cooper opened in Daylesford, and the same time Donna’s son Jack, who was just 15, said he wanted to get involved and go to Cambodia, attend school in the slums and find out what people really needed.

Despite being scared for him, his parents agreed. They took him over, set him up and by the time they returned for him he had become the school teacher.

“The locals had also changed his name from Jack, which means banana, to Soksan, which means everything amazing - health, wealth, goodness.”

Jack told Donna that they needed to build a school in the poorest part of Cambodia. The family chose Mous (mosquito) Village – a place of poverty where the children were covered in scabies, had nits jumping off their scalps and had no idea of hygiene. They started with the basic steps of digging wells for water and putting up mosquito nets to stop people dying from dengue fever.

When Soksan School – the village’s name was also changed to Soksan - was finally built, the first day attracted 740 children from all around the region. Teaching was quantity not quality so eventually the school was closed and relocated with placements only available to the children of the village.

The next step came when the children started telling Donna they would have to leave school early to help their parents. They asked, tongue in cheek, if Donna could employ their parents and if they were forced to leave school, she could sack them.

With Donna’s background in clothing, she soon found out that while there was no fabric manufactured in Cambodia, the best rayon in the world, which is made from wood pulp, came from Korea. And all the offcuts from Korea were sent to Cambodia.

With a complete lack of training and many cultural obstacles, it took four years for the first dress to be completed, but Donna’s two stores are now completely stocked with Sew Good Company clothing and accessories – made by the parents of her school’s students. And the profits go back to those people.

But with the foundation 100 per cent volunteer-run and with 97 per cent of proceeds going to charity, along with sales it also needs donations to survive. Right now, it is down to six weeks of funding before the bank account has a zero balance.

And Donna’s five children are also rightly moving on with their lives, getting married, and having to work outside of the foundation, which leaves her worried about its future.

“I guess I am saying that I am a local girl and while I can’t afford to eat out, I shop at our local supermarket and I only employ locals. I donate to every single person who wants something of mine to raffle for a school or a charity – and now I need help back.

“Perhaps people can come and shop here or drop a coin into our wishing well or place a money box in their stores. We all need to come together.

“What we have is just too amazing to let it fall apart. The Cambodian people are just so grateful and what they are doing with this information we are providing for them is just going from strength to strength.”

Good spot for spuds and bubs

RENTHAM is becoming a place that grows more than just great produce. While the village is famous for its spuds, the number of new babies in town proves that it’s also a fabulous base for young families to settle and grow.

Prams and strollers abound on the streets and the playground at Quarry Park is in daily use by parents of young children. While the toddlers clamber and explore, their mums and dads get to connect and exchange experiences and ideas.

Kate Mooney, who is an active member of the Trentham Mums & Bubs Group, says that having lots of babies of a similar age in the area is great for the mums.

“We get together at the library for 'Rhyme Time' at the Neighbourhood Centre for social sessions and playgroup and have very casual gatherings at local coffee shops to just relax and chat. There’s always someone to give a crying baby a cuddle, or to give another mum a little break to be able to finish lunch.”

Of the seven babies pictured, five were born since the last Spudfest and all the mums are excited about the festival this year.

“For those of us with toddlers or kindergarten and primary school kids, there are so many fun things to do,” says Kate.

“And the babies just love all the colour, movement and music. It’s a chance for us all to have some family time, while celebrating this lovely village which is our home.”

The Great Trentham Spudfest is on Saturday, May 4.

A retreat from design Where does a buyer for a major retail store go to get away from their work?

Away from the perfect and exacting, from pressures and people? To Anglesea and her shabby chic weekender, for my friend Ange.

Relaxation is the only thing on the agenda here. When you deal with product and matching, making things look and perform perfectly as a day job, you like to avoid the same on the weekend and especially at your weekender.

Ange was fortunate enough to snap up a house with a high bush view. This house required some prep by Ange and it is now low maintenance with wipe-down floors and surfaces, so the wet, sandy dog and kids can race through the house without parental stress. Sand and dirt are mopped out and clutter is avoided. Doors and windows open wide to allow views and breezes. The barbie is on the deck and the beer is in the fridge. Perfect.

Angeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s design style is shabby chic here. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s picked up second hand furniture with an eclectic retro-inspired mix. There is a 50s sideboard that holds the paraphernalia and remotes, a plum coloured 70s side lamp, a potted palm along with a modern rug that is a burst of fresh colour.

Unobtrusive bamboo and glass side tables move easily around the room for use and hanging light shades are simple, cheap and white to go with the whitewashed walls and ceilings.

The exception is the retro light fitting in the kitchen and the drum shade over the large timber family table. A couple of feature pieces like the two light fittings and the red feature chair in the main living area define their spaces by providing a visual point of interest. It all blends easily and casually together, providing a space for winding down and resting.

The view out of the large glass, top floor windows are the real feature of the house. You can see trees from all the windows, but it is the panoramic sweep over the treetops, on permanent display, which is the focus. It is serenity as many of you will know.

Nature washes away the stress. It rejuvenates and energises so we can get through our challenges for the next week. Here there are beach walks in the morning followed by meals over the trees. Ange knows she has found her piece of utopia and I was very happy to share in her utopia even if it was for one weekend. It is the perfect sea/ bush change for this hard-working lady.

A perennial garden task

Your perennial flowering and ornamental foliage plants usually require special attention at this time of year, as they either slow down their growth or move into a state of semi-dormancy. For many of them, if allowed to stay in the same spot for more than several years, will have become overcrowded, with succeeding years of fresh growth, and then deteriorate and produce fewer, weaker flower heads.

With many varieties such as salvias, Michaelmas daisy, shasta daisy and perennial aster, after a few years of producing young growth on the outside of the clump, the centre will almost die out, leaving a tangled mass and few straggled flowers on the newer growth.

This is the best time for rejuvenation. Making sure to water the bed thoroughly beforehand (we can't rely on rains to soak the soil at present) and using a garden fork rather than spade, lift the entire clump out of the ground and pull each clump apart, discarding the weaker, puny, rooted divisions and the tired old central growth. The few flowers they might produce hardly merits their place in the garden. Once lifted, consign the discards to the compost heap and place the replants under a wet chaff or sugar bag until the lifting is completed and you have dug over and worked in a good layer of compost, with a sprinkling of blood and bone or dried stable manure to ready the soil.

Other less vigorous varieties such as heuchera, perennial phlox, gerbera and polyanthus should be lifted and divided every couple of years. In their case it's more about pulling the clump apart and replanting everything with sufficient roots to get them off to a good new start.

You will probably discover more than a few dormant snails still waiting for the first good rains to encourage them to awaken and massacre any fresh growths in sight. Grab any you uncover and put them into a bucket or other large container and sprinkle them with copious amounts of garden lime to end their marauding days.

Rather than spread anything toxic around the garden to catch any other slugs or snails that are awakened by your watering, bury a few glass jars up to their rims around the beds and pour a couple of centimetres of stale beer into each. (You may ask if anyone has a spare quantity of stale beer!) The snails can get into the beer but are unlikely to have the ability, or will, to climb the glass wall to get out.

Your roses won't be looking their best now, especially in this dry year - leaves dropping and any flower buds showing now not fully developing. Apart from trimming these off don't take this as a sign to give them their winter pruning, otherwise you will only encourage a rush of soft new growth, probably in time for an early frost - something quite likely in these drought-ridden times. Late July or even mid-August would far safer.

Keep the beds tidy for now, raking up and disposing of any fallen leaves to help prevent the spread of pests and diseases.

Trust the locals for winter colour

One of the many benefits of growing Australian native trees and shrubs is the winter flowering habits of many of them. Apart from the ubiquitous wattles and gums, there are many varieties of flowering trees and shrubs to fill your garden with colour, honey bees and nectar-feeding birds.

A couple of my favourites at the moment are pictured below, from left, the sturdy, compact little tree, melaleuca lanceolata, the equally attractive, and favourite of the honeyeaters, banksia integrifolia, and the compact-growing deep pink callistemon one of the many hybrid forms.

OW the federal election has been called for Saturday, May 18, the Real Estate Institute of Victoria will be keeping a close eye on the policies of all political parties, CEO Gil King says.

Mr King said the REIV was committed to supporting Australia’s competitive advantage and economic growth as the representative body for an industry that handles $76 billion in transactions totalling 20 per cent of Gross State Product and employs more than 15,000 people in Victoria.

"The REIV will continue to lobby all sides of politics to influence a healthy regulatory environment to support our industry. In addition to our traditional focus on planning, infrastructure and sustainable development, the REIV will be representing our members’ concerns around accessing capital, the burden of increasing taxation, cutting red tape and investing in skills and training for our members.

"The REIV believes that now is not the time to alter negative gearing and capital gains tax arrangements as this will create further uncertainty in the property market.

Negative gearing supports the supply of rental housing which is a major issue in Victoria where rental vacancy rates are at record lows.

"During this campaign, we will also advocate for city deals for Victoria akin to the recently announced deal in Hobart. Similar deals should be commenced quickly for metropolitan Melbourne and larger Victorian regional centres such as Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton and Mildura. Major urban transformation projects can significantly change a city’s future and have a positive impact on liveability and the economy."

Mr King said the REIV would like to see the removal of financial impediments that discourage older Australians from downsizing. "Aged pensioners in particular should not be penalised when selling a family home to move into a retirement village by having the excess proceeds of that sale (after purchasing a retirement home) included in the age pension assets test. In addition to advantaging older Australians, this will unlock additional housing stock."

The Plough @ Trentham always a great treat

H

EADING to The Plough @ Trentham is always a real treat. The food is great, the serving sizes are perfect and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable.

During a recent visit we were warmly greeted by Jane, the manager and daughter of owners, chef Mark and Ruth Mills. Jane is very well accomplished in hospitality and has that rare but perfect mix of friendliness and service.

We were shown to a lovely table, which Jane says is proving among the most popular with a window view, and were quickly presented with our drinks - a chardonnay for me and a tap beer for Kyle.

Entrees We chatted to Ruth while our entrees were prepared. I chose the Margherita arancini bites with basil aioli ($14) and Kyle opted for the Crispy fried chicken ribs with a sweet chilli & lemon dressing ($15). Both were absolutely delicious. The arancini were ricey and cheesey while the ribs had a real Asian twist, loaded with extras including pickles and beanshoots.

Then, just because they are very generous, out came another entree, the Parwan Valley salted beef with pear, pepper, mustard aioli & soft herbs ($16). Mark uses lots of Parwan Valley produce and for good reason. Their ethos is being an ethical, sustainable producer "who understands that the better our livestock is treated, the better the quality and taste on your plate". And the salted beef is awesome. It has a very delicate but obviously meaty flavour which is perfectly complemented by the sweetness of the pear and pepper.

(Just a tip, if you want to discover the best cooking tips for Parwan Valley produce, just head to www.parwanprime.com.au and you'll find loads of recipes from Mark himself. Or maybe save yourself the washing up and head to The Plough!)

Mains Onto mains and there are plenty to choose from. As I said, The Plough really specialises in meat, from Grain-fed hanger steak with fries, salad & bearnaise sauce ($31) to Dryaged (35 days) porterhouse with mash, bok choy & red wine sauce ($37), or from 36-hour slow-cooked Parwan Valley blade steak with mash, peas, mushrooms & red wine sauce ($33) to the Slow-cooked rolled pork with roasted spiced carrots, apple & Spanish onion salad with mustard sauce ($31).

Kyle was very happy to play along, last time he had that porterhouse and raved for weeks, and ordered the Slow-cooked rolled Parwan Valley lamb with creamy mash, roasted Dutch carrots & toasted buckwheat ($35). No disappointment there. A perfectly fallingapart piece of lamb, full of flavour and texture.

Now, I am not much of a meat eater (although I tried the lamb and it was amazing) so I went for the Seafood linguine tossed with tomato, olive oil, parsley, garlic and a hint of chilli ($33). Wow! The Plough might specialise in meat but they make a mean linguine - loaded with Atlantic salmon, barramundi, butterfish and calamari. And I love that they always serve a decent size serve - you will never go home hungry here.

Desserts We were done but there is always room for one dessert and you can't go past the Vanilla bean panna cotta with berries & fractured meringue. Just beautiful. All desserts are just $14 and great value. Go on, spoil yourself.

Three more things The Great Trentham Spudfest is on Saturday, May 4 and what better place to take a break from the town-wide festivities than The Plough? But make sure you book.

Bookings are also now available for their Mother's Day lunch on Sunday, May 12 from 11.30am. There is a three-course set menu with selections from four entrees, five mains and five desserts with prices $65 per person and $27 for kids for a main and dessert. As above, bookings are essential.

Come fire or drought, the farm goes on

I

N MANY ways, Julie and Phillip Hanson represent the change that has swept across many farms in the last half-century. It’s no longer full-time.

Phillip’s father farmed full-time, but as Phillip gestures around his Fern Hill property, it’s clear the change has truly come. For him, it’s been many years of work, from swimming pool lifeguard to grader driver.

The 120-hectare farm has been in his family for about 100 years. Today it supports 200 ewes, 30 cows and the same number of calves. As a fourth-generation farmer, he’s been out in the paddocks since he was 14, first working with his father, grandfather and uncles on sheep, cattle and spuds. Briefly, he reminisces and how potatoes brought $5 a bag 30 years ago.

Four years into working he joined the former Kyneton Shire working at the swimming pool, staying there for 21 years during which he once had to give mouthto-mouth resuscitation and cope with a steady stream of rescues during his 10-hour seven-day-week summer, with an occasional summer off. Then he’d come home and work.

Phillip also had a spell as a swimming coach at Campaspe Downs before joining a contractor for a 38-hour week behind the roller. Next, he moved to Macedon Ranges Shire as a grader driver.

He’d married Julie at 21 and along came Rebecca, now 39, and twins Vanessa and Nathan, 36. None of the three is attracted to the farm so its future is unknown.

What is known, however, is the one great fear on the farm: fire. Phillip recalls the bad Spring Hill fire about five years ago. What stands out, too, is being waterbombed while fighting the Riddells Creek fire in his grader. And the fire trucks working beside him.

Then there was the Paradise Valley fire, which took 90 per cent of the farm, including his parents’ home. “We sat out and watched plumes of smoke and ‘mosquito’ helicopters…the smoke was towards East Trentham.” Then it was close.

Off went Julie with kids and dogs. Phillip’s parents left.

“There were 30 to 40 feet of flames coming through.” They took cows, calves and sheep. It was, he simply says, ‘the toughest thing.”

Then there was the terrible drought of ’82-83 when the twins were born. A spring-fed dam makes a repeat unlikely.

At 62, Phillip clearly enjoys the farm life: no neighbours close by, his 82-year-old mother living in a house on the property and independence that is tempered only by the priority of his grader work.

Julie has her own business, she manages many firms in the area, keeping accounts up-to-date, chasing up slow-paying debtors and generally keeping the books in good order.

Julie and Phillip live in the old homestead. Originally, the kitchen was detached, as in the late 19th to early 20th-century style, with all cooking done there brought up to the main house. The kitchen was moved to the house while Phillip’s grandfather was still alive. Now, the Hansons have modernised their kitchen but, with continuity important in farm life, the old wood stove on which Phillip’s grandmother cooked keeps its prime spot.

HEALTHY ANZAC BISCUITS by Teresa Cutter

W

HILE Anzac biscuits are traditionally made with lots of white flour and sugar, this healthy recipe from my award-winning cookbook, Healthy Baking, is based on a combination of rolled oats, hearthealthy olive oil and scents of vanilla and honey. + DAIRY-FREE, + HIGH FIBRE, + LOW GI Ingredients: Makes 20 small biscuits 175 g (1 ½ cups) organic rolled oats, 60 g (1/2 cup) organic desiccated coconut, 60 g (1/2 cup) chopped almonds, 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, 3 tablespoons raw honey, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, ¼ teaspoon baking soda, 1 tablespoon water.

Method: PREHEAT your oven to 160°C fan-forced. COMBINE oats, coconut and almonds into a food processor. ADD oil, honey, vanilla and baking soda. MIX well until just combined. ADD the water and process again. FORM into 20 small biscuits and place onto a lined baking tray. FLATTEN down with enough room around each biscuit.

BAKE for 20 minutes until golden brown. COOL completely before eating and enjoy.

Notes and inspiration: I use a food processor to combine mine, but you can also just throw the dry ingredients into a bowl and mix well with your hands until a biscuit dough is formed and it starts to stick together when pressed. The more you work the oats, the more they'll stick together. Store in an airtight container for five days.

T

HE Junior Tennis season finished with a presentation morning and sausage sizzle at Daylesford Lawn Tennis Club. Organisers said the season was a great success with children of all age groups and standards playing.

Beginners participated in the Hot Shot program which aims to give them the basic tennis skills through fun activities. Hot Shot coach and past junior and senior champion, 16-year-old Anna Santurini, commented on how fantastic it was to see beginners pick up the basic skills of tennis and that some of them would transition to competition play next season.

On the presentation day Anna presented Hot Shots with participation medals and champions in each of the age groups were awarded trophies.

More advanced juniors took part in a weekly round robin competition and played singles and double championships at the end of the season.

Club president Greg Malcher awarded several special awards. Ryan Coliero received the President’s Award, a tennis racquet donated by Daylesford’s tennis coach Brian Carr, for demonstrating good sporting behaviour, fairness and leadership.

Adam Leonard was presented with the encouragement award, while Logan Koleski and Giselle Stewart received awards for perseverance and effort.

HE men’s 13- hole competition played on April 4 and was won by Kenny Rea with 31 points. Kenny was also nearest the pin on the 11th hole.

The men played for the April monthly medal on April 6. Winner of A grade was Bernie Frith with 70-6-64. Winner of B grade and the medal was Colin Richardson with 76-14-62. Nearest the pin on the 11th was Rodney Robinson. Shane Nevill and Graham Cronin both got the birdie hole on the 18th.

The men played for the Jack Dixon Stableford Aggregate Honour Board event on April 13. Ian Rodgers 37 points and Graham Fell 41 points won the day with 78 points. Nearest the pin on the 13th was Les Healey.

Pick me, pick me...

Just sayin’...

E DID a sausage sizzle last weekend. Well, the one before Easter. Last last weekend. But don't worry, we didn't raise money for The Local.

We're not quite a charity case.

It happened because we did a story on the new Coles at Woodend. I think I may have mentioned we know we have been in the country too long because when we stepped inside for the first time we both just looked up at the bakery, the butchery, the cheese wheels above the deli, and went "ahhhhh". Look, I love Daylesford Coles' staff, especially Joy with her wacky hats for all occasions, but come on, Woodend wins hands down.

Anyway, we talked to the manager, Ben, and did the story and he mentioned they have a brand new sausage sizzle station for anyone wanting to raise a bit of money. And it was summer so he also mentioned that they had offered it to the Woodend CFA but they couldn't take them up on that offer because they were always on standby. So we had a think and decided that we weren't on standby and we could run a sausage sizzle for the Woodend CFA. And then life got in the way a bit so we didn't do it in summer, but we did it last weekend, in autumn.

And it was great. We had Kyle and myself, and The Local crew members Julie, Glen and Kevin, and their respective partners, Phil, Peta and Maureen. And we did really well.

Oh, if anyone needs a sausage sizzle expert, you want to talk to Phil. He was an absolute powerhouse. Had the burners on just the right heat, kept a very, very clean barbeque, was not fazed one iota by chopping onions and kept his cool when we were down to one cooked snag, 40 more had just gone on and waiting customers.

Mind you, Peta is CWA and provided aprons and had sticky tape and scissors - for our CFA sign. Organised! And Maureen was pretty good at spruiking those final snags. Teaching experience - keeping the classroom in order. Everyone has their own talent I guess.

We decided not to put a price on the snags - because how do you put a price on having a CFA? It was a "what is the CFA worth to you?" kind of deal. And people were throwing in $5 notes for one sausage. And one woman threw in $6 for no sausages. All up we cooked 88 saussies, and I think we ate roughly one and a half each, so with $300 made on the day that's an average of almost $4 per snag. People of Woodend, I salute your generosity!

The lowest we received for one sausage was 20 cents and that was only because a mum was passing with her young daughter who really wanted one but they only had a bit of silver.

I get that. And who are we to deny a sizzled sausage to anyone? That's un-Australian.

The next lowest price was $2 for two sausages. A couple of blokes, early 30s perhaps, sauntered over. Obviously the hangover snag. One pulled a $20 note out of his wallet but when he heard the donation spiel he saw his mate drop a $2 coin with a bit of a clunk. With sleight of hand, the note was slowly pushed back into the wallet. Crafty. Just sayin'...

The Local - Connecting the Community To give back to the community, The Local has been running its Connecting the Community adverts for more than five years. The adverts are for not-for-profit groups and organisations to lend a hand when finances can be a bit tight - or just don't exist. We all know how hard it can be to make volunteer-run organisations work on the smell of an oily rag!

Kyle’s Rant

A

CCORDING to Wikipedia - the birth-place of reliable information - the definition of a child is biologically, a human being between the stages of birth and puberty, or between the developmental period of infancy and puberty.

So, a child for my liking is still a developing human requiring some sort of guidance, steerage or rules to bounce off. OK, I am not a breeder through choice, but I know what a well-behaved child looks like because, believe it or not, I once was one.

To the point, on a recent day off I shouted the better half to a Gold Class movie session. The cost was $25 per seat so pretty up there for a look at the big screen, however it was school holidays and I don’t think I could have endured a picture theatre full of little people not knowing when to shut-up.

So, it was off to the adults' theatre but as we turned the corner it too was full of slightly more privileged little people - who still didn’t know when to shut up. I just sat down and buckled in for the ride. There were orders coming thick and fast from these little buggers - milkshakes, cakes, fish and chips - the joint smelt like a food court on a hot day.

This didn’t stop during the movie either as the craftier ones among them had scheduled in chicken wings, sandwiches and mocktails. There were about 15 kids in the theatre ranging in ages from five to 10 I suppose and it was as if they were on their last collective meal. The poor wait staff were run off their feet.

I couldn’t hear the movie or for that matter see most of it due the constant parade of staff and flashy fatty foods. At one stage one of the little oompa loompas, in a loud voice about halfway through the movie, ordered three extra milkshakes for his mates shouting at the waiter above the movie soundtrack and producing a credit card. My God, what’s going on with the world?

And then there was the little shit behind me. His mum had decided the Master Blaster lookalike (think Mad Max and the dude that rode around on the shoulders of the larger, more challenged gentlemen) didn’t have to have his own seat, he could just squeeze in with mum. That was for most of the movie and the rest of the time he wandered around the theatre hopping from seat to seat yelling questions to his mother to try and figure out the intricacies of a movie which clearly went over his head. The other parents did the opposite. They were either nowhere to be seen or in seats far, far away from their little cherubs, tapping away on mobile phones while supposedly looking after their charges. And when the lights came up, I guess they all headed back to their privileged homes.

Anyway, that was my brush with the future of humanity. Not a lot to look forward to. Spoilt brat rant over…

Upgrade for track

A

SHARED use track for mountain bikers and walkers, the Lerderderg Track includes some of the wildest and most rugged landscapes close to Melbourne.

The Great Dividing Trail Association has begun upgrading the 87km Lerderderg Track along the Daylesford/Blackwood/Bacchus Marsh route in association with the land managers. Map maker Ken Dowling has produced a new waterproof map that features alternative bike routes and a revised means of threading through Bacchus Marsh to the railway station. The new map is available at the Daylesford Regional Visitor Information Centre, the Blackwood General Store or online at www.gdt.org.au For much of its length, the track follows the heritage-listed Lerderderg River, which falls steeply into a deep gorge. At gorge end, the river contains a rich repository of geological features of international significance.

Harkin Property have long been supporters of Spudfest, an annual

not-for-profit festival in Trentham, run by community volunteers. Frances put her volunteer cap on long before opening Harkin Property more than three years ago and continues her ongoing support. In fact, Frances has been supporting Spudfest in some way for at least seven years. “Being a part of the community is what it is all about” says Frances.

Having an understanding of the community needs and being there to support in any way she can. The Harkin team are also enthused to visit Spudfest on the day. It will be the first Spudfest for some of the crew. Nicoletta and David have recently moved to the area and are keen to see what Spudfest is all about.
