The Look Of Love - St Valentine's Day

I've always been more than slightly bemused by the annual celebration of the death of a Roman village priest by sending anonymous tokens of love. Especially now, in the name of commercialism with the event morphed into Valentine's Day, for some, yet another excuse for lavish gifts.

Whatever happened to the old ritual of sending a romantic card or a single red rose, under the anonymous - Your Valentine?

Mind you, I prefer to send something a little more permanent in the form of a colourful flowering pot plant and it's most propitious that there are many and varied beautiful plants in full bloom and available from your local nursery at the moment. Cyclamen, moth orchids, lilies and ornamental capsicum, to name but a few.

And what about poor Valentine? Valentine was sentenced to a three-part execution of a beating, stoning, and finally decapitation all because of his stand for Christian marriage against the Roman law of that time. The irony is one of his judges was a man called Asterius, whose blind daughter Valentine was supposed to have healed. Legend has it that the last words he wrote were in a note to Asterius' daughter.

He inspired today's romantic missives by signing it, "from your Valentine".

Summer pruning for better crops and extra blooms

It is generally accepted that winter or early spring are the most beneficial times of year to prune most trees and shrubs, especially at first signs of renewal, ostensibly to either promote strong new growth, or to direct the energy into less, but better, larger, fruit or flowers. It is also time to reshape the plants and remove weaker or winddamaged branches before the heat of summer.

But, as with every rule, there can be important exceptions - mostly with fruiting trees and, of course, roses.

At this time of year roses are normally at, or just passing through, their main flush of summer blooms and about to put out new growth, so could do with a little spruceup and a dressing of fertiliser. They can also be encouraged to produce another crop of flowers by also having a light trim to remove any weak or diseased growth and spent flower heads. Remove any fallen leaves, flowers or petals from the soil beneath each plant to minimise the chance of diseases breeding there.

Fruit trees, both citrus and deciduous, will certainly benefit from a judicious removal of some excessive new growth at this time of year, especially if the trees are bearing fruit.

This should be more of a "training" exercise rather than full blown prune, mainly to redirect some of that energy towards the developing and ripening crop. It should be more of a light trim, especially on fruit-bearing stems - just a removal of the tip growth to redirect the energy to the fruit. Also be aware of the need to shade the fruit from the worst of the summer heat.

If your fruit trees are in their first couple of years of cropping, make sure their slender branches don't become over-burdened and damaged by the weight of the fruit. It's always better to sacrifice a percentage of the crop and have fewer, but larger fruit, than to risk losing the lot or damaging the tree when the branches collapse under the load.

Really smelly houses We all have smells that make us turn up our noses, whether they are personal or household smells. I will share some tips to help - help eradicate that is.

Our sense of smell is a wonderful beast. Once that noxious scent hits our olfactory passage you cannot unsmell it. It colours your perception from here on in. Odours or bad smells can come from many things such as bacteria, mould, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate pollutants such as smoke, mildew, stinky feet, garbage, blocked drains, cooking as well as paints, solvents, glues or strippers.

Any of the bad smells mentioned can be masked if not eradicated and I have found this has been a necessity more than a few times when getting a house ready for sale. Nothing will lose you a sale faster than a bad smell.

There is a reason baking bread or fresh coffee aromas are advised for an open house. They are inviting, comforting and appealing. Smells are triggers for memory and when you want a buyer to remember your house, you want them to associate it with a positive memory. A scented candle is an easy go-to masker. Never leave the candles lit and unattended however.

Bicarbonate soda in a bowl absorbs smells. Bicarb is great in the fridge or in stinky shoes. You can add vanilla or peppermint essential oil to the bi-carb to act as an absorber, plus add scent.

Vanilla and lavender oil is pet-friendly. (Pregnant women are not advised to use lavender in their first trimester). Essential oils can be put in a diffuser or in a spray bottle for a quick spritz. Coffee percolating or coffee grounds in bowls both mask and absorb smells. White vinegar is the best item ever as far as I am concerned, for cleaning, deodorising, pouring down drains, wiping rugs and cushions, running through a washing machine and dishwasher cycle, cleaning floors and benches and bathrooms.

Boiling an orange, lemon or lime in a small amount of water covers smells with a clean, fresh citrus scent.

A cut onion, I believe, absorbs nasty odours including paint and solvent fumes. This is one I haven’t yet tried but would welcome any comments from those who have tried it.

It is hard work getting ready to sell a home. There are many details to attend to apart from getting the house painted, oiled and tidy. Many people are accustomed to their own household odours. Do not be fooled into thinking it is only other people's houses that smell. I realise this every time I walk past my teenage son’s bedroom door. He often gets spritzed through the half-opened door as I’m not willing to enter the testosterone stink of his man cave.

Happy smelling everybody.
