The Local is brought to you by a team of local journalists, photographers, columnists, sub-editors, graphic designers, book-keepers and, of course, great delivery people. So when we talk about being local, we really do put our money where our mouth is.

The Local's motto is to "connect the community" by bringing people closer with great features on amazing local people and ensuring you know what is happening around your community whether that's a festival, a fete or maybe just a great special from one of our fantastic advertisers. Content is key.

We love writing about local people doing inspiring things and even local people doing ordinary things. And as some people, mostly politicians, have found out, if you are not local you will not appear in the pages of The Local.

You will find The Local, and all the back copies, online at www.tlnews.com.au and we deliver bulk drops throughout the region along with smaller "cafe" packs to every cafe, hotel, bar and restaurant we can find. We've even heard of The Local turning up in places like a cafe in St Kilda and a bar in Bali! All up we have a print and online readership of about 14,000.

The Local's advertising rates have always been kept affordable so even small advertisers can advertise big. Colour is free, the sizes are an eighth, quarter, banner, half and full page and we can help with making up branding and graphics. The world is confusing enough, so we like to keep things simple.

Finally, from the start, we have offered two free adverts in every edition for notfor-profit organisations along with a rescue pet looking for a new home. It's just our way of giving back. We really hope you enjoy this edition of The Local.

Green light for inaugural Daylesford Motorfest

HE inaugural Daylesford Motorfest will be held on Sunday, February 17 at Daylesford's Victoria Park.

The event is the brainchild of motoring enthusiast Peter Olver who started Daylesford Cars and Coffee which began in 2015 as a not-forprofit fundraiser for local charities including Daylesford Hospital.

The event, first held at Lake Daylesford, started with just 20 cars but quickly grew and was moved to Jubilee Lake and at the last meeting more than 500 vehicles and 2000 people were in attendance.

In a meeting with Hepburn Shire Council last week, Mr Olver said the event would generate $1.5 million for the local economy with up to $40,000 raised for 30-plus charities in need, from the hospital to CFAs and sporting clubs.

Mr Olver said the Daylesford Motorfest committee believed around 2000 classic vehicles and 5000-6000 people would converge on Victoria Park for the event - with onlookers to be bussed in from points in Daylesford.

At least 12 car clubs were keen to take part, he said.

"This will be a major event for the town and region and if handled correctly, will be ongoing, like ChillOut. "And for that quiet period in February we are going to fill the accommodations and keep the traders busy."

Mr Olver said he hoped traders would dress their windows with an automotive theme during the weekend.

"This will be the envy of every other car display or show in Victoria.

I know it. It is going to blow the others away and people will leave on Sunday saying 'Bloody hell, what was that?'. Do not miss this event!"

The family-friendly event will also have food and trade stalls, displays and demonstrations and a best-dressed competition and live music.

Entry is $10 per vehicle including a driver, $5 per person and children under 15 free. Entry for vehicles is from 7am with the public welcome from 9am.

Hepburn Shire Council was originally concerned about the number of cars being parked on the oval at Victoria Park but compromised on just under 300. The rest will be parked around the oval and throughout the venue.

Deputy mayor Cr Kate Redwood said Daylesford would be a car enthusiast's mecca in February next year when Daylesford Motorfest comes to town.

"The organising committee led by Peter Olver, and Hepburn Shire Council have reached agreement on the use of Victoria Park to hold the event. The location will provide a spectacular backdrop to the large number of immaculate and much-treasured cars that will be exhibited. The economic benefit of this event to Daylesford and district will be significant.

"Well done Peter and his committee who have worked so hard to achieve their dream event."

Shire CEO Evan King said council was excited to announce that it would be working in partnership with the Daylesford Motorfest to host one of the state’s largest car shows in Daylesford.

"The Motorfest will deliver significant economic benefit to the region and once again demonstrates the Hepburn Shire’s ability to attract and run significant events."

So...we can’t know what monies were paid to David Bromley and Kate Ceberano! (The Local, November 5, Edition 136.)

And Donna (Kelly) says ‘so that's the end of that!".

I’m pretty certain there was a hint of sarcasm in that.

I am outraged, as are others, that the loss of taxpayers' money should not be fully explained with the cancellation of Live.Love.Life.. If we are not privy to this information I can only conclude again, that ‘special people’ have rules that are not applied to ‘ordinary people’.

It happens all the time and it is sickening...unfair, undemocratic, insulting. In this case the loss of taxpayer money (our money) that might have gone to housing/ whatever is a scandal that should be fully investigated and exposed.

Festivals to mean a deep meaningful appreciation for the simple that involved literally hundreds of school teachers and beauty of love and life, now suggest that you can only students, dozens of artists and musicians, residents and truly value living and loving if you are paid extremely local educators. well to live it.

I think of our local festivals, Swiss Italian Festa, - Mara Ripani, Blampied Words in Winter Festival, the ChillOut Festival and many other wonderful events that run on budgets so incredibly tiny that they can only run with the dedicated work of volunteers (people who receive no financial Can anyone believe or explain away the crazy gain).

And so I am perplexed, how is it possible to be given delays for the renovation works (at The Rex)?

Macedon state election candidate statements

Amanda Millar – Liberal Party Only the Liberals will put the focus back on regional Victoria. Labor has been in government for 15 of the last 19 years – and over this time there has been a significant decline in rural and regional infrastructure including the poor state of country roads, the current declining performance of V/Line with near record lows for punctuality and cancellations, as well as increasing local crime.

The Liberals will invest $19 billion to bring high speed rail to regional Victoria. Regional roads will receive a $1 billion funding boost – with a return of the country roads and bridges program to fix local roads in each regional shire.

The Liberals have a plan for decentralisation – bringing more jobs to regional Victoria and allowing families to enjoy regional life. This includes the announcement of $30 million to improve regional telecommunications – fixing blackspots which see our regional businesses and communities isolated.

All Victorians will benefit from the Liberal/ Nationals' plans to reduce cost of living. In Hepburn Shire – only the Liberals have committed to invest $5 million for Stage 1 of the Daylesford to Macedon Ranges Cycling Track – creating jobs and enhancing cycling tourism.

The Liberal/Nationals have a strong plan for tackling rising local crime – including greater frontline police numbers. Many locals in Hepburn Shire are concerned about this issue with the rise in local crime.

Labor’s Live.Love.Life. debacle – scheduled for the weekend before the election and thereby impacting the long-running Swiss Italian Festival demonstrates this government’s disconnect from this community.

Only the Liberal/Nationals will protect our CFA volunteers who protect our towns and communities. This includes our commitment to the presumptive legislation for CFA volunteers.

Liberal candidate Amanda Millar has lived in Macedon for over 20 years. Amanda is local, caring and has a proven track record as a strong voice for these communities.

Ralf Thesing - Greens Ralf Thesing is advocating for a sustainable future for the Macedon Ranges and Victoria, specifically in the areas of water, environment, renewable energy, transport, local food production, education and health. Ralf moved from Germany 20 years ago and became an Australian citizen, residing in Woodend since 2005.

Ralf is very active in the local community. As a committee member and president of the Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group for 10 years, he has been instrumental in establishing the Woodend Farmers Market, the annual Macedon Ranges Sustainable Living Festival and the solar farm on the old Black Forest Road timber mill.

“Having been active in local groups, standing as a candidate is the next step to move our State Government towards a more sustainable future. We need to act on climate change now to prevent the worst outcomes for our children and grandchildren. I stand with the Greens on their 100 per cent renewables target by 2030 and an end to coal-fired power stations and gas exploration.”

Ralf holds a Masters of Business Administration with a major in environmental science and worked in the corporate world for many years, before building a successful small business with his wife, which provides dietetic services to aged care homes nationwide.

Nicole Rowan, resident of Riddells Creek, is the candidate for Northern Victoria, a seat the Greens narrowly missed out on in the last state election. Nicole is a lawyer and senior tax trainer and has the economic credentials to promote the Greens’ economic principles and policies.

The Greens come into the election with an independently costed policy platform including a commitment to transform energy and refocus expenditure on public transport throughout Victoria, provide a home to all, protect high conservation forests and address invasive species and reduce waste and plastic pollution (see https://victoria.greens.org.au/platform).

Mary-Anne Thomas - ALP My top priority is to ensure the Hepburn Shire remains a fantastic place to live and raise a family.

Labor has already invested more than $53 million in schools across the electorate, including the $10 million upgrade of Daylesford Secondary College.

Research shows that nearly one in five families do not have their children enrolled in early learning because of the cost. That is why a re-elected Andrews Labor Government will fully cover or subsidise the cost of three-year old kinder so every child gets the best start – not just those whose families can afford it.

To support this major social reform, the Andrews Labor Government will invest in almost a thousand kindergartens across our state including infrastructure upgrades and an expansion of Trentham Kindergarten.

To help drive down the cost of energy, a re-elected Andrews Labor Government will deliver $500,000 for Hepburn Community Wind Park to build Victoria’s first hybrid wind and solar park. We are also offering rebates on solar panels for 650,000 homes and will provide half price solar batteries for 10,000 Victorian households that already have solar panels.

As your local member, I will continue to advocate for the projects that make a difference in our community including sporting club upgrades, road safety improvements such as our recently announced pedestrian crossing in Trentham, the roundabout Labor completed at the Midland Highway’s eastern entry to Daylesford and lowering the road under the East Street Bridge to keep trucks off residential streets in Daylesford.

I will continue to advocate for local jobs through investments in local health services as well as our thriving tourism, hospitality, food and wine sector to create local jobs and ensure that Daylesford and Hepburn continue to be a great place to live and raise a family.

Pick me, pick me...

Just sayin’...

I

T'S been a busy week.

It started on Monday morning with a meeting between Daylesford Motorfest and Hepburn Shire Council. As sponsors of the event, The Local, well Kyle and I, went along to add our support.

It was a "robust" meeting which ended with a compromise of just under 300 cars being allowed to be parked on the oval at Victoria Park. Which was just as well, because the event organisers were ready to walk away and I don't think we could take the loss of one more event. If you know what I mean.

It should be a great event, and it's in that quiet part of February which could do with a bit of propping up. And if it's ongoing that's even better. Well done to all those who have made it happen, including the council! Credit where it's due.

Then I thought I'd better offer up some space to Macedon state election candidates and let them all know the requirements on Tuesday. You may be surprised to know there are six of them all up. And, as at 3.39pm on Thursday, with a 5pm cut-off, I have received four photos and two lots of copy. I guess they are busy typing, like me. I hope so.

Who has been busy is the ALP Victorian Branch who have sent out hundreds of media alerts and funding promises. I have almost as many of them as I do from people telling me I have won lotto competitions I have never entered or asking if I want to be their special buddy. Anyway, I guess it will all come out in the wash. Oh, one more piece of copy just popped into my inbox!

And then there are all the festivals we have lined up to visit this weekend. The opening of The Palais in Hepburn Springs on Thursday, the Clunes Show on Saturday and then the Malmsbury Fayre on Sunday. It's a bit of a pictorial edition - like the Herald Sun! We also wondered if former journalist with The Local, Jeff Glorfeld, would write about his ongoing experience with the Californian wildfires, as they are called in America, as we move into the bushfire season here. He agreed and it's an interesting piece, on page 39. And a first for The Local to have an overseas correspondent. It's also a stark reminder, thanks to his sister-in-law and her husband, that we need to ensure we have our bushfire plans and grab bags ready pretty soon. They left in time, with pets, but without medication, computers or even a change of clothes.

It's also timely to ask around and see if your local CFA is holding any meetings or awareness events. I know Daylesford has held one and I believe they are also holding regular open days so people can pop in and ask any questions. Amazing volunteers, each and every one of the CFA! The Local - Connecting the Community

T

he Local is all about Connecting the Community. We run good news stories about amazing people and places, and festivals and events. And our fantastic advertisers run great deals for locals and visitors alike.

To give back to the community, The Local has been running its Connecting the Community adverts for five years. The adverts are for not-for-profit groups and organisations to lend a hand when finances can be a bit tight - or just don't exist. We all know how hard it can be to make volunteer-run organisations work on the smell of an oily rag!

Macedon state election candidate statements Rob Bakes - Independent Most people in the area know me as a longtime resident of Kyneton. If you are older than 20-something you may remember our family's renowned Mud Brick Pizza which was located in Piper Street, Kyneton. Now in semi-retirement, my focus has been on climate breakdown and advocacy for clean energy and democratic renewal. In the last 18 months I have been immersed in a campaign to save the old Kyneton Primary School for the community.

The day of independents and independent thinking has arrived. Australians have lost confidence in the major parties. We need some ordinary people like you and me in State Parliament to bring some plain common sense into Government decision making. A people's coalition holding the balance of power would put the good of all Victorians before the coal lobby, big political donors, large unions or any other powerful vested interests.

We need to halt the dire consequences posed to community life in the Ranges by the urban sprawl proposed by Labor as the only solution to population growth. What happened to the idea of infill development which could still protect our precious town character? It looks like we will become a dumping ground for metropolitan overflow.

If you live in Kyneton or surrounding districts a first vote for me will send a strong message to the Labor Party to allow the old primary school to be leased to our community Co-Op. Lastly, if you care about the deadly consequences for future generations of frying in an uninhabitable planet and you want something done about it on your behalf, give an independent your first vote.

The new mine tunnel exhibit is the latest step in popularising what is said to be the largest public bottle collection in the Southern Hemisphere.

History is, as it were, uncorked at what is officially the Lee Medlyn Home of Bottles in Bailey Street.

Standing beyond an impressive drive, the museum began life as the South Clunes State School in 1882, evolving into a knitting mill 40 years later, and then home to the bottle collection in 1985.

Many are from an astonishing find. Imagine the surprise of the operator of a huge digger working on a mine in Fraser Reserve, Ballarat, in 1982 when it began uncovering a vast cache of bottles. Harry Meade, mine manager for Western Mining, stopped the digging as more than half of the old bottles were smashed and 2000 were rescued.

And no two bottles are the same, because of the limited time workers had to hand-make them. Here are bottles that held hot food, the strong pepper sauce overpowered the taste of rotten meat.

So great was the demand for oil for mining machines, cooking oil was drained from bottles for use. Vinegar went into steam engines to stop rust.

Ale bottles were in vogue before beer was first made in the 1890s. Almost every Australian town had its stone ginger beer makers. Clunes’s fine collection of them came from two brothers in Beaufort. These bottles were made from clay thrown on a potter’s wheel, all 2000 of them.

High value is placed on some bottles. A Lion Brewery one from Adelaide brought $10,000 – there are none in South Australia because they all went to thirsty Darwin.

The story of work is in bottles, too. Workers who blew black glass were mostly dead of emphysema by 38. On display are bottles and shards of bottles that exploded when being made, either because of too much gas or weakness in the glass. Fingers, eyes, hands and even lives were lost in this way. Back in the 5th century BC the Romans were turning out slender amphora to carry wine.

According to Bottle Museum president Steven Greenwood, a small amphora on a stone in the display held poison. He began collecting in 1968 and has about 2000 bottles, including one valued at $18,000.

Moving further into the museum means entering the Pub with No Beer. This is the Albion Hotel, complete with bar and beer taps but its kegs are empty.

Nearby is a Hamilton Patent Bottle, still sealed, which was dug up in an old Central Goldfields garden. Not only did it emerge into the daylight after 130 years, but it is also the only one in the collection that has its contents more or less intact.

The 6500 bottles held here are dwarfed by the 25,000 in a private collection in Traralgon, says Greenwood, but there are sought-after items in Clunes. They include the first embossed bottle for soda water, imported to Sydney from England in the 1830s. There are only two such known, and bumptious types from the Sydney Museum who demanded that Clunes hand it over were sent off.

Behind all this was the passion of George Lee Medlyn, a grazier and wool classer from St Arnaud, whose bottle passion began when fossicking for gold.

He retired to Clunes after the death of his wife in 1981. There he met Joyce Harrison, who was a judge at an antique and collectables fair. They eventually bought the brick State School, with its handsome spire, and opened the Bottle Museum in 1985, bequeathing it to the Shire of Talbot and Clunes after his death in August, 1994.

The Town Crier of Clunes will lead the way to the mine exhibit at 11.45am on Sunday, November 25.

Kyle’s Rant

T

HE media landscape is changing, which five years ago flagged an opportunity to start to build The Local. If you aren’t across the latest changes, in short, Channel Nine is currently in talks with Fairfax Media to swallow them up and this should be all over bar the shouting before Christmas.

What that means for newspaper readers is unclear, although Channel Nine has been very clear on its direction and that is digital platforms (because print is dead, right?), so that’s a lot of regional mastheads heading for the scrapheap. How far down and where this particular rabbit hole goes is unclear and unknown territory.

But what we have seen recently is the rise of the independent newspapers like The Local. Grass-roots, community-driven vehicles of information, editorial, photography and great advertising which are refreshing.

I am not blowing my own trumpet because there is a team that puts The Local together, but from the moment you pick it up out of the basket you are not shaking out the advertising inserts to get to a dwindling 20-page 1970’s style paper. Instead you are met with a fresh, vibrant front page with a local on it.

Since we started The Local the team has grown to 14 - that’s 14 local people employed in some way by the paper. Most readers know that The Local was started by just Donna and myself with only 500 copies delivered between Daylesford and Hepburn, but now the area has grown significantly to include both the Hepburn and Macedon shires and some 7000 copies.

And these aren’t copies wrapped in plastic to be run over in the driveway or sit on the newsstands till the next edition comes out, these are copies which are voraciously devoured by readers with nothing left on the newsstands within days of delivery.

That’s thanks to the amazing skills of our writers, graphic designers and photographers, and the realisation by our many advertisers that The Local works.

Since our company began we have developed other products which have also undermined the whimpering corporate voices who cry from atop their large city buildings “print is dead!” leaving us in the countryside to fend for ourselves. RESPIRATORY HEALTH DURING SMOKY PERIODS Victoria experiences bushfires and controlled burns every year during the warmer months. And where there’s fire there’s smoke!

Smoke from grass and bushfires can reduce air quality in rural or urban areas resulting in itchy eyes, sore throat, runny nose or coughing. For most people these effects are temporary and quickly pass once away from the smoke.

For some people, however, smoke exposure has particular health risks. Infants, children, older people or people with an existing heart or lung condition, including asthma, hayfever or sinus problems are more sensitive to the effects of breathing in fine smoke particles.

Continuing to take medication prescribed by your doctor for heart or lung conditions.

Following your asthma management plan and keeping a reliever or inhaler on hand.

Hepburn Health Service boosts support for LGBTI community

R Mary-Faeth Chenery has been a member of the Daylesford community for 17 years and is comforted knowing the local health service has a strong commitment to supporting the LGBTI Community.

Sixty-nine-year-old Dr Chenery says: "It's tremendously important to me that the Hepburn Health Service can serve the whole community."

Hepburn Health Aged Care Services achieved a Rainbow Tick in 2016 for its acknowledgement and commitment to ensuring the provision of safe and respectful care to members of the LGBTI community.

Now the Hepburn Health Service is expanding that commitment and is seeking Rainbow Tick accreditation across all of its health care services, including its acute and Integrated Primary Care services.

Sarah Roberts was recently appointed as Rainbow Tick project officer and says: "Hepburn Health has a unique approach to ensuring it meets the needs of its large and growing LGBTI Community."

Hepburn Health respects the lived experiences of LGBTI consumers and their families, and is seeking community members to become involved in its expanded LGBTI Advisory Group.

Ms Roberts says: "The LGBTI advisory group will participate in co-designing Hepburn Health Service delivery to ensure we meet their needs and that they all feel welcome to access our services."

New advisory group members could identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, gender diverse and/or intersex, be from diverse backgrounds, ages and experiences or be allies of LGBTI people including family members and friends.

Dr Mary-Faeth says: "The more the Hepburn Health Service knows about the specific needs of individuals from the LGBTI community, the better off we all are."

Horses and bikes not mixing well in Wombat

H

ORSES and motorbikes do not mix very well and nowhere is this truer than in the north Wombat State Forest around Spring Hill.

Bordered by Kangaroo Creek in its final stretch before disappearing into the Malmsbury Reservoir, it is a relatively little used patch of open bush at the pointy end of the proposed Wombat National Park. Its significance is as a transition zone between the temperate vegetation of the alpine uplands and the grey box expanses of Victoria’s northern plains.

For Bruce Gleeson, pictured, and Evane Chesson of Silver Brumby Trails it is also a wonderful place to take people out on horses to experience the peace and tranquility of the Aussie bush. However in such a small area, they are frequently brought into unpredictable contact with motorbike riders.

“I have seen them in groups of up to 30 riders at a time,” says Bruce. “Some are good and turn off their bikes when they see our horses, other just fly past without stopping. In my experience the most conscientious are those ones from Melbourne, they want to see different country and will go out from point A to point B over 15 or 20 miles (24-32 kilometres) But the locals just look at certain areas in the bush as their race track and will use that same circuit all the time and not get off it.”

To Bruce the problem is once the motorbikes put in a trail, over time it gets wider and wider, followed by 4x4 vehicles that continue the process deeper and deeper into the bush. Inevitably the activity leads to erosion, rubbish accumulation, abandoned campfires and illegal firewood collection.

But he does not believe that just locking the whole thing up and saying no one can come in here is the right thing to do. Like with anything, the forest users must abide by the rules and regulations of whoever manages it.

“There are fantastic people out there who may want to ride bikes the same as I want to ride horses but what do you do? How do you say, well you can’t come in because you are wrecking the forest? I’m not trying to restrict it just for myself, I want everyone to be able to enjoy the place but it has got to be patrolled. And everyone has got to have a bit of respect for one another and not cut it up or use it as a dumping ground for rubbish.”

Currently the tracks and roads about Spring Hill are under the jurisdiction of the Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol based at Kyneton. For Acting Sergeant Peter Wall that includes regular visits to the area to ensure users, including bike riders, stick to the rules; including registration, licence, and to stay to formed roads and not go making their own. However there are some limitations on what they can do regarding illegal off-road riding and over use.

“It can be difficult for us to enforce the proper use of tracks without organising a specific operation with off-road units joining in to get more coverage. We conduct them at different times of the year and we find that if we target an area for a few days over a week we don’t tend to have as many issues.

"The word gets around and people that are not doing the right thing tend to stay away. However we tend to focus on the areas around Bullengarook, the back of Gisborne and the Cobaw ranges where there are more people using the forest.”

While the police do what they can, for Bruce, who has lived in the area for many years, it is really about proper forest management of the area, something he has seen evaporate over time.

He says in years past there were forest officers based in the area that practically knew every tree and gully and kept a regular account of who was in there and what they were doing. Something that does not occur as much today and so the bush is suffering because of it.

“The question is not whether it is National Park or Regional Park but who is going to monitor it? As a business we will not be affected by National Park zoning because we have the permits but day after day, bikes, utes and trailers go in there doing what they like. I’ve never seen a ranger yet. So, National Park? Well who is gunna patrol it then? They still don’t have any money.”

Gardenia Florida - that elusive heavenly scent In all my years in gardens - both professionally and pottering around at home I've struggled to produce a single lush, healthy gardenia plant without the aid of a greenhouse, let alone have one flower. That was, until we replaced an existing south facing sleep-out and equally sad bridging lean-to, with a new garden room featuring half-lattice side walls and a laser light roof. Summer glare is reduced by a removable shade-cloth sail.

Apart from providing an almost year-round outdoor living area, I've found the room is almost perfect for finicky plants and, even more exciting, provides a great environment for "striking" cuttings and raising seedlings.

In the past, my attempts at outdoor-growing, lush green gardenias that flower freely were little more than yellowy struggling plants with survival the foremost task. Whether it was the too harsh climate, "hard" Adelaide water, food-poor, badly drained soil, or simply cussedness, I always ended up with straggly, insipid, nonflowering specimens.

Admittedly, those I had planted into containers with perfectly prepared soil, did grow healthily enough, but still suffered from one or other of the no-nos.

By the time I moved to the "gardenia-friendly" climes of Victoria, I had given up and sworn off gardenias to pursue other floral beauties for my garden.

It was the gifted gardenia plant (from a friend whose flower-filled beauty I had admired), that found its way into a large pot in our newly-built garden room and just went crazy.

So, at last, I could finally provide all of the requisites of a blooming, happy gardenia. So much so, that this year I was able to move it into a large container in a shady and sheltered corner spot, where it is now flowering for the second year.

The gardenia manifesto Gardenias prefer a warm spot with morning or afternoon sunlight, against a brick or stone wall or in a small courtyard. They like warmth but not hot sun which can yellow, even scorch, their leaves. In colder climes they should be moved to a warm, sheltered spot lest their leaves turn yellow, or even drop.

Gardenias should be planted into acid soil, which can be supplied by an addition of compost or animal manure to the potting mix at the time of planting. Use any potting mix designed for azaleas or camellias.

Then feed them twice a year - in spring when they begin to form flower buds and again in December/February, or whenever they finish flowering - with any fertiliser that is intended for camellias and other acid lovers.

Yellowing of leaves caused either by cold weather or lack of soil acidity can be prevented by a "dose of salts", magnesium sulphate (Epsom salts) at the rate of a dessertspoonful to five litres of water for young potted plants, up to several tablespoons for large tubbed or garden bed plants.

Best possible time of year would be mid-spring although now wouldn't necessarily be too late for the first dosage. (This treatment would apply to other yellowing acid soil loving plants such as azaleas, camellias and even roses.)

Most common garden pests affecting gardenias are leaf-sucking aphids, thrips and mites which, although not causing much overall damage, can distort flower buds and young leaf shoots. A good dose of pyrethrum spray can soon control them.

Keep your plant in shape by pruning immediately after it has finished flowering followed by a dressing of a nitrogenous fertiliser.

HE Real Estate Institute of Victoria’s quarterly reporting data shows that the median price of a unit or apartment in regional Victoria is sitting at $292,500, up 4.9 per cent in the past 12 months.

The top 20 towns that have recorded the largest increases in their median unit price are dotted all over regional Victoria.

Traralgon came out on top with a 32.7 per cent increase in the unit median price between September 2017 and September 2018 to $258,750. In Apollo Bay, the median unit price is sitting at $530,000, having increased 26.9 per cent and the median unit price soared 26.7 per cent in Drysdale to $399,000.

In Highton the median unit price increased 26.6 per cent to $440,000, Bright’s unit median price climbed 22 per cent to $375,000 and Ocean Grove’s unit media price went up 19.7 per cent to $760,000.

Lorne was number seven on the list with a 19 per cent increase in the median unit price to $672,500, followed by Horsham with a 17.3 per cent increase to $263,975, Belmont where the median unit price also climbed 17.3 per cent to $420,000 and Brown Hill rounded out the top 10 with a 17.1 per cent increase to $284,000.

Other towns to record increases in unit price of between 12 and 16 per cent included Torquay, Redan, Hamlyn Heights, Castlemaine, Mildura, Shepparton, Corio, Bairnsdale, Leopold and Ballarat North.

Macedon Ranges Shire mayor Cr Jennifer Anderson said the dance was a wonderful annual event which celebrated the contributions and achievements of people living with disabilities in the shire.

"Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also about raising awareness and helping to break down barriers facing people with a disability," Cr Anderson said.

The dinner dance will be held at Kyneton Bowling Club on Saturday, December 1, starting at 6pm. Tickets include a two-course meal, and the event features a band and a vintage photo booth.

Tickets are $15, carers attend for free.

"Everyone is encouraged to come along and enjoy an evening of entertainment, sharing stories, meeting new people and of course dancing!" Cr Anderson said.

First production for Moonlight Theatre Co

OONLIGHT Theatre Company is staging its first production after being formed by Michael Treloar, John Rowland, Sophie Flynn and Barbara Rowland in June.

The Wrong Box will première at the Theatre Royal, Castlemaine on Thursday, November 29, and also be performed at the Mountview Theatre, Macedon in December.

Through the concept of “armchair theatre” the Moonlight Theatre Company pays tribute to the glory days of post-war BBC radio, evoking a simpler and more innocent entertainment.

The audience will be transported back in time to a BBC radio studio of the 1940s, with the cast showcasing their multiple characters and voices, while performing all the sound effects live on stage.

This will be the third “live” radio play directed by John Rowland in Castlemaine over the past couple of years. The Wrong Box, originally a novel by Robert Louis Stevenson and Lloyd Osbourne, was brought to the screen in 1966 in the film adaptation directed by Bryan Forbes. It is from this film that John Rowland has adapted the script as a radio play.

Set in Victorian London, it is the story of a tontine - a kind of insurance wager/annuity/lottery in which money is invested by each participant, to grow with interest, with the last remaining survivor receiving the substantial payout.

In quick succession the competitors and rivals for the tontine are dispatched, either through war or misadventure, leaving the final two boys, now elderly men. These old boys just so happen to be brothers, estranged brothers Masterman and Joseph Finsbury, who haven’t spoken in 40 years but who live next door to each other.

And so the madness begins: cunning cousins, a sighing virgin, a medical student, a serial killer, a corpse, a venal doctor, a train crash, eggs, a barrel, a box, the wrong box, the Salvation Army, a carriage chase, a funeral and of course...the tontine.

The cast comprises Kevin Dee, Tony Harvey, Bridget Haylock, Daniel Keohan, Bronwyn Lamb, Babs McMillan, Stephen Mitchell, Melinda Ralph, Donna Steven and Michael Treloar.
