OLLS, it has been said, teach us about body shapes, race and class. They influence our understanding of childhood. Symbols of perfection, they both comfort and terrify, being replicas, souvenirs and secrets. For centuries, they have taught us how to understand our world and are windows to other worlds.

Portals to our past and to ourselves, they open doors to our imagination.

When Joy Higham opens the door to her fervid world of dolls in Clunes, these ideas seem apt, for here are dolls of almost every imaginable sort, especially miniatures. Here is Luvvy, a boy she made, who’s holding a frog and has an elf on his left cheek.

And Hilary, three months’ work with a knit-lace tunic over knitted underwear and wearing a tiny watch. Himself is a leprechaun, with a top hat and the inevitable shamrock.

Sherlock Holmes isn’t in his Baker Street residence, but it’s there in minute detail, two rooms that swivel to reveal his tiny books and a microscope made from teethcleaning sticks.

A couple of thousand dolls are here, with more in a shed behind. A clue to how this started is a picture of Joy’s mother when aged three, a doll on her lap. Using a magnifying glass Joy, 68, made a replica of her mother’s doll, and here it is, Suzannah, sitting nearby. “I thought she was a likeness for mum.”

Joy began making them in Bendigo. But it took her two years to find someone to guide her, then her instructor left after a week.

“Classes were a disaster,” she says.

She persisted, enrolling with prominent doll maker Linda Jacobson in Geelong, then undertaking the three apprenticeships that are needed before doing her teacher’s certificate at Boronia, in the Dandenong Ranges. Points were awarded for making two dolls in each seminar.

“It just sort of escalated from there,” says Joy. As her collection grew to overflow from the former container (bought for $10,500), her middle daughter suggested putting the collection on show, which is something she is doing.

We turn to a tiny doll made from cigarette paper. Cups and saucers of gumnuts from her garden. “People think I’m a bit strange, rolling round collecting the gumnuts.”

The top of a detergent bottle and a piece of ball pen join a glass button with a knitted top to make up a tea cosy. Straws convert into a lounge suite at a scale 148 times smaller than normal.

Joy’s painting skills scored the highest possible 10 points, she says, while pointing out a doll’s dress made from a tray cover and another from serviettes.

And her abilities run even further, to knitting, crocheting, counted crossstitching, as well as tapestries. She took 10 years to finish a tapestry of Fred McCubbin's renowned painting, On the Wallaby Track.

Nine firings were needed before she got the correct mask for her Phantom of the Opera figure. “You put your heart and soul into it,” she says.

Ultimately, Clunes should benefit from this astonishing collection, for Joy says her plan is to present it to the town for permanent exhibition.

A golden anniversary for Sandy and Don Sandy’s story Don Breen is known as a man of few words, but he just needed a short sentence to convince Sandy Hodgines to become his wife. “I want to spend the next 60 years with you.”

And they have nearly done it. The Daylesford couple celebrate 50 years of marriage on Wednesday, October 24. And like their wedding, they will do it quietly.

Sandy was a 20-year-old working in the advertising department of Myer Melbourne when she met the man she called for some time, Mr Breen.

“We would go to heaps and heaps of parties all the time with a whole lot of friends, and we used to drink at a pub in Prahran, The Royal Exchange. We met lots of unbelievably fascinating people, among lots of hard-drinking and smoking car dealers, and one of those people, who wasn't a car dealer and didn't smoke, was Don Breen. I thought he was quite fascinating, a bit aloof and he just seemed a bit different to the rest of them and that grew as I started to talk to him.”

That was early in 1967 and just a month or so later Hewlett-Packard started up in Australia and headhunted Don to head their medical sales division, then whisking him away to the US for six months.

He came back in August with a number of “Welcome back Don” parties held including one at the Travellers Hotel on the corner of LaTrobe and Swanston streets.

“The Myer advertising department, there were 100 of us, had this rather notorious reputation for being drinkers and this was just before the end of the six o’clock swill. One of the department would go over just before 5.30pm and line up a bar full of beers and then we would arrive at 5.30pm and drink them down until 6pm.

“I remember being quite excited the first time Donny sauntered in there. One Friday a whole pile of us went out for a meal. Don and I were both living in Elwood, me at home with mum and dad, and Don sharing a flat. He drove me home and asked if he could meet me for a drink the following day.

“We did start going out together and he came to my 21st birthday bash at home.

I remember the day very clearly and when he walked in my heart skipped a beat.”

Sandy said she never imagined herself as a bride, but with both her and Don keen to have children, she happily agreed when Don, “pissed as a fart”, sort of proposed.

Don, unbeknown to her parents, even moved in with her after his own flat burnt down while he was away in Sydney.

The marriage itself was a low-key affair that almost didn’t happen. Don booked the registry office for October 24 at noon but was working in Canberra the day before with Hewlett-Packard. He drove through the night and arrived in a wrinkled suit (“I wanted to tell him to change but I didn’t want to nag”) at 11.30am – before a mad rush through the city to the registry office with Sandy, and just her sister Cheryl and a friend, Tim, for witnesses. “At the office we just sort of sat on benches, like being at the dentist, waiting to be called. We had no-one to take photos but the office had this funny little old man who crept around taking photos and we got half a dozen.

“After the ceremony we went to the Cecil Hotel near the law courts and had a drink. Then my sister called mum and dad and we called into dad’s advertising agency to tell them we had just got married. When we arrived my father was out dealing with some problem at Channel 0, so I told mum ‘I’ve got something to tell you, we just got married’. She just looked at us and said ‘You naughty things’.

“Then about 10 minutes later dad appeared, all very hail fellow well met, because the guys were there, and started walking up the stairs to his office. Mum said ‘Dad, the kids have got something to tell you’ and I looked up and said, ‘Meet your new son-in-law’. Dad just glared at us, turned around and went to his office. Donny said, ‘That went well’. But then dad came back down and said we’d better open the champagne we were holding. He gave us a cheque for $100 which was a lot of money at that time.”

Next stop was the Casa de Manana Hotel in St Kilda Road for another drink and "the most romantic thing" Don had ever said to Sandy. He asked her to come over and sit on his knee, which she did, with an officious bar manager quickly coming over to tell her that was not allowed.

“At this point my sister burst into tears crying ‘They just got married and if she wants to sit on his knee she can’.” The bar burst into applause and the manager retreated.

The next day, the pair were back at work, where Sandy was asked more than once if she'd had to get married. But it wasn’t until the following Friday they remembered Don’s parents were still in the dark. They called to see if they would be home that night and arrived with the parents clearly expecting to be told of an engagement.

“Don’s father was a beautiful man, just like Don, and he was a bit overcome but his mum went into a complete state.

"She had envisaged us getting married at Wesley Chapel with all the trimmings.

Then she went on about wedding presents and eventually gave us a Sunbeam frypan, which Don still uses in his shed to melt things, a crystal decanter, six crystal glasses (I have two left) and a Sunbeam hand beater, which I still use today.”

Fast forward 50 years and the couple have three children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The move to Daylesford in 2009 came after daughter Keele first moved there, with another daughter, Krish, in Ballarat and their son, Kanen, in Sydney.

And in the nine years they have been here, they have made quite a mark on the community with Sandy involved in myriad community events, known especially for her exquisite calligraphy skills.

Don meanwhile, has put his engineering ability to good use with many people asking him for “a quick hand” with anything from generators to lawn mowers.

“I remember my girlfriends saying to me, when we were leaving Melbourne, that I would meet a whole lot of new people and I said I didn’t want to meet any new people, I have enough in my life. Well, hello!”

Don’s story Sandy's vision after the couple met, according to Don, was to “lie in wait” for his return from America after he was headhunted by Hewlett-Packard and left for America for a training program for six months.

“So that was an interesting start inasmuch that part way through our romance yours truly packed his toothbrush, jumped on a 707, flew across to California and left the girl behind. That was my vision. Her vision was that I had to come back at some stage, so she was going to lie in wait for me and she did.”

Don remembers meeting Sandy in Prahran in a pub with “a whole team of young women of which some are still close friends of Sandy’s”. “There was a guy from Myer, Ted, who was one of their overseas buyers and he was like my team of mates, very keen on developing relationships with hotels. I had met him previously.

"He gathered up all the girls from Myer including Sandy and said, ‘I’ll take you to an interesting hotel’. It was a pub where the local tramways people meet, you know, drivers and conductors, so the place got a bit boisterous; it was good fun.”

Among those, and unbeknown to the group, was John Glover, later to become infamous as The Granny Killer. “He was one of the funniest blokes you will ever meet, an absolute dynamo of jokes and gymnastics.”

Don said it was myriad attractions at first sight, but he wasn’t looking around for someone to marry.

“I had plenty on my plate that I had to do, and was doing, with my career. In hindsight I think it was obvious that I had been identified as someone to pursue. And there were a lot of different characters there that you could say were competitors, but I must have stood out. I was a fairly gregarious character at that stage of the game.”

Among those attractions were Sandy’s bright mind and artistic ability which proved a good attribute in later years when she helped him out with his various business ventures doing the marketing and design.

“I could see her capabilities were a good match (and) she was quite a pushy girl and it became apparent to me that it was going to be difficult to escape should I choose to do so. I would need to sign up to go overseas for some time. And she certainly could talk, and that hasn’t gone away.”

Don’s memory of proposing differs a little from Sandy’s. “There was a small event at one of our flats, and at the completion of the festivities, having displaced the police for the second time and pacified the neighbours from upstairs and downstairs from all the stomping and yahooing that was going on, I said ‘I think we should move into something better than this little dog box'.

"Before I got to say ‘will you marry me?’ she jumped to the position of saying yes. It was a fairly slapdash thing, not down on one knee, I’m not good at that sort of stuff.

“We got married between several weeks or a month or two or something of that nature after I proposed. The wedding was pretty informal in the sense that we both elected to avoid formality and decided to utilise the registry office. I had to do a trade show in Canberra, so Sandy got the job of booking the registry office. There were only four in the party, us and two witnesses including Sandy’s sister Cheryl and an old mate of mine, Tim Acland, who was the best man.

“The trade show in Canberra ran through the day before, so I had to pack up the station wagon and drive through the night to get back to Melbourne, arriving only a matter of half an hour before the ceremony, so all hell broke loose. It was a bit of a rush, not the ideal way to gear up for a wedding, but it seems to have worked.”

Don said he never thought about reaching a golden anniversary "my mind was full of my career, not contemplating places to live and children to rear”.

“I guess 50 years sounds like a long time, but in reality the way it’s all unfolded it hasn’t appeared like 50 years. We have had very few, if any downsides during that period, however one of the regrets I have during our early stages of marriage was the fact I had to disappear overseas for work for sometimes large chunks of time leaving Sandy at home with our three young children. But at least I was around for all the births. But she bore the brunt of having to keep the business going and raising a young family. I hugely respect her tolerance in respect to putting up with that sort of lifestyle.

“And it may not come as a surprise to people that the equal and opposite irritating thing for me was her commitment to the St Kilda Football Club. A number of people will attest that I am the anti-Christ of football and that still remains a point of contention between us. So those are a couple of things that have had potential for impact on the 50 years' commitment we have had.

“And in the 12 months gone I was diagnosed with a brain tumour that carried with it a short-term prognosis and I wouldn’t be here today doing as well as I am without Pearl (Sandy) and the three kids who have become a mighty team, supporting me. But I have just completed the last round of oral chemotherapy so am quite happy with that.”

Don said celebrations on Wednesday would be up to Sandy. “I tried to take a role but with all due respect there is only one of us having an anniversary and that’s Pearl and she’s going to organise it. I and several others have tried to contribute with questionable influence. So, on the day, as with many things in life, you roll with the punches."

Just sayin’...

Pick me, pick me...

HERE is still a lot of talk about the cancelling of the five-day Live.Love.Life.

Festival.

Yes, I know there is a smaller weekend still happening - and some great midweek events too - and well done to the people who are still working towards that. Just because we have lost the big names does not mean we cannot hold our own in this amazing region.

But many of the questions remain unanswered. Where did $450,000 go? How much was paid to co-creative directors David Bromley and Kate Ceberano? What were "the unforeseen financial circumstances"?

A couple of the Daylesford Macedon Tourism (why and when did Ranges get dumped from that title?) chiefs have said the original festival was the brainchild of the former CEO Judith Isherwood and without her at the helm, things didn't work out. She wasn't at the helm because she retired earlier this year, but surely the team is bigger than one person? And then there is the backing of the board.

New CEO Steve Wroe says he is busy working on a spreadsheet on what got spent and where, and will be open and transparent when the figures come to light. And I am sure he will be. But for a festival that was cancelled, well I don't know when, but we were told on September 17, surely a month later there are already figures somewhere. If you win a grant, you need to acquit it and there are generally financial milestones along the way.

Anyway, support the locals who are still putting on wellness and food events, with a lot of fun thrown in, and watch this space. We'll let you know when we know.

Meanwhile, we took up the offer of Hepburn Shire Council to have a wander through The Rex last week. The project has stalled, as we all know, while they work out planning permission, but it has come a long way from the last time I wandered through to use the toilets.

The new theatre is taking shape upstairs, the library space is roomy, the open plan council offices have a few meeting room shells ready to go and there are some nice skylights.

Mind you there is a spot up the back, which is under the mezzanine floor which has no natural light. I felt a bit sorry for the workers who eventually will have to be there but was assured that some council staffers like being in the dark. Hmm. I also noticed a huge mural painted by David Bromley. It goes up the steps towards the cinema. There's a photo on page 35 if you are interested. I was, and asked when it had been commissioned - I mean, you don't usually paint until the construction is done. Apparently it was former Hepburn Shire Council CEO Aaron van Egmond. And it didn't go before the council's Public Arts Panel. And there are actually two murals. You can read more about that on page 13. It's been a funny week. Just sayin'...

New CEO for DMT talks Live.Love.Life.

EW Daylesford Macedon Tourism chief executive officer Steve Wroe agrees he arrived to face “a bit of shitstorm” over the cancellation of the five-day Live.Love.Life. Festival but thinks the pared-back November weekend is “where it should be”.

“The product totally reflects the brand focusing on wellness, food and wine. It’s almost like rising from the ashes is the phoenix.”

Mr Wroe took up the position earlier this month, taking over from Judith Isherwood who resigned earlier this year.

He said he loved regional Victoria and was looking forward to bringing up his two young girls away from the big smoke, and also to take a step further in his career.

Previous positions have included director of Tourism & Marketing at Parks Australia, parks manager at Kakadu National Park and working with travel organisation Intrepid Group.

“This is the next step in my career. At Intrepid I learnt a lot about tactical marketing in tourism products, then I worked with the Commonwealth Government to get process under my belt. With those two things, running a regional tourism office would be the next thing I would want to do. And it’s shouting distance to Melbourne, where my mum lives.”

Mr Wroe said he believed Live.Love.Life. would have been better to start smaller and grow organically, which is the way it was now evolving.

“I was aware of it before I came, I had my eyes wide open, and I think the team are doing as good a job as they can to navigate their way out of it, they have reshaped a really good product. My approach to festivals is that you start small and grow organically over time and then get feedback from the community.

“I think this pared-back festival is where it should have been in the first place.

(And) I know it didn’t reflect well on the organisation, but we are in a good place now.”

Mr Wroe said the DM Tourism’s board decision to cancel the five-day festival was because it was too big and created a degree of operational and financial risk.

“This pre-dates me, but the board made a decision and wanted to mitigate that risk by scaling back to a smaller event.”

Mr Wroe said he was currently working out how much of the $450,000 Victorian Government grant had gone and would be transparent with the result.

He said some of the money had been spent on website and social media promotion, which was still being used for the weekend event. He said he did know how much had been paid for former co-creative directors David Bromley and Kate Ceberano but would not disclose that until he talked to them to see if they were “comfortable” with that being made public. (Replying in a later email to a query from The Local, Mr Wroe said he had not been able to contact either Mr Bromley or Ms Ceberano.)

Mr Wroe said DM Tourism had a great team who were very passionate, and the weekend festival was now focusing on local product.

Meanwhile, many people, both on social media and around the region, are still asking questions about where the late cancellation and where the money has gone.

On social media community websites, there is support for the weekend festival and disbelief the larger event has been cancelled.

"Fortunately some of the events are still going ahead. Maybe from this the festival could be revived again. I just wish someone would explain where the money went that had been put in to kick off the festival."

"Until all is revealed rumours will keep circulating...which may or may not be fair, but we who were keen to support this great initiative deserve answers."

"Where has the $450,000 gone? Really epic amount of money! So how much was spent, without even putting on festival?? Why did they give it back, and not put on festival, because it was all to big?"

"The money, who got the money? There's a story here for sure. Frankly, I'd like to know what Bromley and Kate were paid for the metaphorical festival!! Meanwhile...a long-standing festival didn't run this year, the already long established Swiss Italian Festa...imagine if the cash went to those exhausted volunteers instead?!"

"It beggars belief that promotional videos were done highlighting Kate and Bromley promoting our area BEFORE an action plan for the LLL festival. Lots of questions around how much has been spent and on what. It is disconcerting that Kate and Bromley have been paid, but for what?"

"It clashed with Budburst I think."

Sadly, the ute we returned to had tyres which had obviously been in storage for a million years, black rims with grease and oil on them, no caps to cover my ute’s aging hubs (apparently the set I was sold did not come with caps) and they had even used the old chrome wheel nuts. I later found out there was an old wheel weight in the mix as well.

Everything aches a little more, all those moves I asked the manager how much to get new black nuts and some hub caps – just I used to break out on the dance floor no longer another 200 bucks. Now I’m not very mechanical so I asked the bloke for a tyre rim upgrade so I could just move away from the family man’s wheel look. After all I am over 50 and never owned a set of mags. The deal was set for a complete tyre and mag package and finally, at 51, I had my first pimped ride, or so I thought.

I dropped off my family man’s ute to the shop, in my head anticipating I would be picking up a weapon of an automobile. Looking back I don’t know what I thought they were going to do to it! Talk about disappointed and Donna was with me which made it even worse. She had queried the amount of money needed for the new look but I told her it would be worth the bucks.

O I have turned over another year. How exciting to be 51 (not) but I guess it’s better than the alternative, that being death.

Bromleys in The Rex

WO murals by artist David Bromley in The Rex were commissioned by former Hepburn Shire Council chief executive officer Aaron van Egmond - with no reference to the shire's Public Art Panel.

The murals, one of buildings, butterflies and what appears to be a rat looking up at the scene, were painted in May. The one by the stairs leading to the cinema was seen

by The Local during a council tour of the stalled project in Vincent Street. The second mural was down the back of the building and covered with black plastic.

Current CEO Evan King said the workw were commissioned by Mr van Egmond, who project managed The Rex until his departure in June this year.

Answering a range of questions from The Local, Mr King said: "The painting of the murals was done in May 2018. The timing of the works was determined by the former CEO and the artist.

"David Bromley was commissioned by the former CEO to provide interior design advice, source furniture and discounted paint and to paint two large murals in The Rex building.

"We are unclear as to why the Public Art Panel was not consulted regarding the commissioning of the artwork. The former CEO worked directly with the artist on the commission.

"The cost to commission David Bromley to provide interior design advice, source furniture and discounted paint and paint the murals was $30,000. The entire project is currently subject to an external audit requested by council."

Hepburn Shire Public Art Panel chair Sue Walker said it was "astounding" that the advisory committee had not been notified about the project.

Ms Walker said the panel, which was formed five years ago, heard talk of the mural in May but had not realised it had been already carried out.

"It seems a very strange thing to happen in local government. This is a very creative part of the world and to do something without it being publicly called for is a huge shock. The lack of process is astounding."

Ms Walker said the committee had been kept "very informed" and "significantly involved" about changes at the Daylesford Town Hall.

"We never had any involvement in The Rex," she said.

Under the council's Public Art Policy, it says council’s decisions on public art projects will be informed by advice from an independent panel of experts.

"When a public arts project is identified, the relevant details will be forwarded (to artists) and recipients encouraged to further circulate the information."

The Local sent Both Mr van Egmond and Mr Bromley emails asking if they would like to comment but did not hear back by press time.

Daylesford Cider win LGBTIQ+ symposium

AYLESFORD Cider has won two gold medals, one silver and one bronze in the micro category (less than 20,000L) at the 2018 Australian Cider Awards.

The two golds were for the Yarlington Mill 2018 and Vintage Dry 2018. The first is one of the cidery’s newest additions to its range and is a bittersweet apple, with decent tannins, resulting in a smooth, rounded cider that is classified as a mediumsweet cider.

The Vintage Dry is an almost bone-dry cider with good structure, tannins and a touch of bitterness alongside a touch of residual sweetness, so it doesn’t lose its apple foundations.

Which toilet would you use if you are an older trans woman in our rural townships? Do gay men feel safe walking around town at night? Which doctor do you go to if you are a lesbian woman over 40 years old?

These are the types of issues that a free two day LGBTIQ+ symposium entitled The Power of Your Rainbow Community will explore next month in Daylesford.

Cobaw Community Health welcomes Victorian Gender and Sexuality commissioner Ro Allen to present at the symposium, along with Dolly Diamond, well-known comedy cabaret entertainer, who will MC the event as well as perform on the last afternoon.

Ro Allen says the elders have so much to offer. "That's why it is so important to stay connected and build connections between older members of our rural and regional LGBTIQ+ community. I am really looking forward to being a part of the symposium - and Dolly Diamond promises to be a hoot.”

Interactive workshops will be facilitated by a diverse range of presenters, including Sally Goldner from Transgender Victoria and Bisexual Victoria, Dr Philomena Horsley from the Gender and Women’s Health Unit at the University of Melbourne along with other prominent local professionals in the LGBTIQ+ sector.

Funded by Thorne Harbour Health (formerly Victorian Aids Council), this symposium aims to connect older LGBTIQ+ people across Central Victoria and will offer a number of different workshops that will engage participants in creating and sharing networks and information.

Cobaw Community Wellbeing manager Tim Adam said the symposium recognised the diversity that sat within the LGBTIQ+ community in Central Victoria. "We want to celebrate that diversity. It’s a celebration of ideas, thoughts and actions.”

LGBTIQ+ community members of all ages in Central Victoria are invited to participate in this local initiative. The symposium will be held on November 1 and 2 from 10am to 4pm in Daylesford.

Time for a good feed With spring playing its usual tricks and springing a welcome few days of good steady rain (obviously brought on by our decision to add a concrete apron to our carport) our gardens should get away to a good start.

This means, of course, that it's time to encourage and assist vigorous, healthy growth throughout the whole garden, especially in the vegetable plot and the fruiting trees. This generally means an application of some form of fertiliser or manure to supplement the minerals and other elements occurring naturally in the soil.

Plants exist by converting water and these elements into their stems, flowers and fruit. In the wild these elements are supplied by leaves, twigs, fruit, flowers and any animal droppings, which break down and go back into the soil.

Admittedly native plants have obeyed Darwin's law of "survival of the fittest" and have learned to survive whatever weather conditions they receive. Unlike our gardens, where apart from any indigenous naturally-developed specimen, we usually choose to plant highly interbred, hybrid varieties - those with the biggest, brightest flowers or largest, best-tasting fruit. Unfortunately, like our pampered pets, they need cosseting and constant care to keep them performing at their best. This means that even if we keep our gardens tidy and sweep up falling vegetation from our gardens, we should collect it all and compost it ready to return to the beds in spring.

Compost Compost contains practically all the nutrients needed for healthy plant development, especially if you add animal manure as the pile grows. Some, such as sheep and poultry, need plenty of time to break down and lose their "heat" so should be kept separate and allowed longer time to be safe. Best and quickest to be usable are horse and cow manure.

In the early 1950s when vegetable and flower seedlings were grown in long beds out of doors, and before the influx of chemical sprays and fertilisers and heated glasshouses, our nursery survived on regular truckloads of horse manure from local racing stables. This was kept in heaps until it had broken down and was safe to dig into the beds, and then spread lightly over them to keep the seeds moist.

In early spring we took advantage of the great heat created during the rottingdown period by spreading it to a depth of a metre then hollowing out enough space to place the wooden seed trays of frost-tender seedlings such as tomatoes. Large panels of agricultural glass were placed over the lot. It didn't take long before the heat generated by the rotting process caused the glass to fog up.

Unfortunately, our gardens aren't able to supply all their own needs, but it won't need anything like the fertiliser an uncomposted garden requires.

Major plant foods Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) are the main plant foods and the main ingredients of all complete plant foods - although usually found in differing proportions according to the needs of the different plants.

Nitrogen is the single most important as it is essential for the growth of healthy leaves. If plants lack nitrogen, leaves gradually turn yellow, and new growth is stunted. Without phosphorus, photosynthesis is limited and there will be no roots, shoots or flower buds, causing stunted, spindly growth and blue-green leaves.

Potassium (potash) is the essential element for fruit production and stem growth.

Shortage will cause the leaves to brown at the edges and fall.

Although it's possible to just choose any complete fertiliser for general use, specially-blended ones in proportions chosen for specific purposes are best. Like citrus or rose blend.

How hard can we prune back our precious plants?

We've had recent discussions on how ferocious you can be in pruning back trees and could any be too old to be renovated. I discovered the (at least 700-year-old) wisteria, pictured above left, thriving in an inner courtyard of the Medici Palace in Florence. The olive tree, above right, and possibly equally ancient, was apparently part of an orchard growing in the grounds of Relais Villa d'Amelia - now a spanking new resort set on a superbly renovated Piedmont estate.

HILE the auction market in metropolitan Melbourne has been sluggish during the first three quarters of 2018, with fewer auctions held and low clearance rates, regional Victoria is holding

Coming off the property boom of the past few years, regional Victoria has hosted a similar number of auctions so far in 2018 compared with the same period in 2017 with 1985 and 2099 respectively. The success rate for 2018 has been even higher than 2017 with a 69 per cent clearance rate at September 30, 2018 compared with 66.2 per cent at the same period for 2017.

In regional Victoria, 1369 homes have sold under the hammer so far in 2018.

The top three auctions sales in regional Victoria so far in 2018 have all fetched more than $2 million. The most expensive home sold under the hammer was a four-bedroom architecturally-designed home on 50 acres in Mount Franklin with sweeping views which fetched $2.55 million.

Trentham is home to the second most expensive property to sell for big bucks under the hammer: an idyllic 26-acre property at 220 Mulcahys Road which went for $2.2 million. A three-bedroom house next to the Barwon Heads Golf Club rounded out the top three, selling for $2.15 million in May. The Geelong region continues to lead the regional Victorian auction market with the top five towns for auction volume all being located in the region. So far this year, Belmont has hosted the most auctions, 123, with 107 homes sold via auction in the town, leading to a high clearance rate of 87 per cent.

There were also some budget buys in regional Victoria with properties selling under the hammer for as little as $22,250 for a two-bedroom renovator’s delight in Donald. A fire-damaged home at 7 McBain Street, Swan Hill sold via auction for $38,000 and a three-bedroom house located at 65 Bree Road, Hamilton fetched $62,000 at auction.

The REIV expects around 950 auctions to take place in regional Victoria during the final quarter of 2018.

Inclusiveness and connectedness at Hepburn Primary School

S A new principal to Hepburn Primary School at the end of 2015, there were some characteristics that were immediately tangible. The sense of inclusiveness and student connectedness were palpable. More so than any other school context I had experienced.

It is common to see a game in full swing that includes children from all year levels participating actively.

The children have amazing grounds to learn and play in. Making cubbies and digging in the dirt are all part of the recreation at recess and lunchtime.

In the past 18 months, the school has increased from 56 enrolments to 90. This has meant we have been able to provide students with the opportunities of a larger school, but remain small enough to maintain connection on an individual level.

Due to our dedicated and talented staff, the students have access to specialist programs in music, art, drama, physical education, library, Italian and MiniLit and MultiLit (specialist reading tutoring programs).

Programs recently implemented such as Cook in a Box, Move Dream Create, Robotics and private music tuition have enhanced engagement and have allowed students to flourish in a variety of curriculum areas.

The children have an extensive camping program. Camping opportunities include Canberra Camp, Camp Wyuna, The Sovereign Hill Experience and the Lady Northcote camp.

Hepburn Primary School recently joined the Wathaurung Sport Cluster. This enables children access to athletics, cross-country, tennis, basketball, soccer, netball, football and swimming competitions and the opportunity to progress to higher levels.

The Daylesford Outside School Hours Care utilises our facilities, running its after-hours school care and holiday programs from our site.

Significant investment in the area of Excellence in Teaching and Learning ensures evidence-based pedagogical approaches. Recent NAPLAN results also validated this strategic intent. In Years 3 and 5 reading, we are at the state level and above similar schools and schools in our network for certain measures in reading. The Year 3s were at or above the state at similar schools and schools in our network for reading, mathematics and grammar and punctuation.

This is a result of the efforts of the dedicated staff and our strategic focus of excellence in teaching and learning, supported by educational consultants Anne Hammond and Andrea Hillbrick.

Hepburn Primary School has established transition programs with the local kindergarten and secondary school. The reading and play-based transition program between the local kindergarten and the Year 5/6 children is extremely rewarding for all involved. The local secondary school provides many opportunities each term for the Year 5/6 children to attend whole-day activities.

During 2017, the school commenced the implementation of the School Wide Positive Behaviour and Bounce Back social skills and welfare programs. Bounce Back promotes positive mental health and student wellbeing, providing students with practical strategies and life skills to handle challenges and adversity encountered. The SWPBS initiative in Victoria aims to build and maintain: • safe, inclusive, highly predictable and orderly learning environments • positive school and classroom learning environments as platforms for improved engagement, wellbeing and learning outcomes for all students Hepburn Primary School continues to promote the recently determined values of Respect, Perseverance and Kindness. These values are incorporated into learning programs, which develop the children’s social skills. The school chaplain plays a vital role in coordinating this work.

Stop the press! Congratulations to Oscar (shot put) and Hugo (long jump and triple jump) who represented Hepburn Primary School and the Wathaurung Cluster at the Greater South Western Athletics Championships last Friday.

They competed against the best in the South West from both government and Catholic schools for the chance to progress to the State Titles in Melbourne. A great achievement!

NTERNATIONAL Women’s Day is celebrated across the world on March 8 each year. The purpose of the day is to recognise women and their achievements.

In 2005, the Heather Mutimer Honour Roll was established to pay tribute to the women in the Hepburn Shire whose contributions, courage and examples have led to significant social change for women.

Each year as part of International Women’s Day, successful inductees are announced and added to the Honour Roll. The roll provides a forum to acknowledge women who have made a difference in the shire. By acknowledging these women, past and present, they become role models for generations to come.

Nominations for potential inductees close on October 31.

Successful inductees will be announced at a Civic Function celebrating International Women’s Day at the Creswick Town Hall on Friday 8 March 2019.

Masonic boost

T

HE Emergency Relief Program at Clunes Community Health has received a much needed boost this month with a donation of $7000 from the All Nations Masonic Lodge in Clunes and the Freemasons Foundation Victoria.

Apart from assisting clients in financial hardship issues, the program also provides crisis intervention, advocacy, referral services and generalist counselling.

The program is available to those with a current healthcare or pension card, with annual financial assistance in the form of food and fuel vouchers capped at $100 for singles and $200 per family.

In 2016-2017, Hepburn Health delivered $3000 in emergency relief in and around Clunes. The program was able to provide financial assistance to some 50 individuals.

The cheques were presented to Hepburn Health Service’s Fundraising, Events and Marketing manager Peter McConvill by Merv Romeo, Worshipful Master of the All Nations Lodge at Clunes.

The Freemason’s Foundation provided $6700 and the All Nations Lodge added $300 to the community contribution.

WO new Volunteer Resource Centres are opening at Goldfields Library branches in the next few weeks where advice and guidance on local volunteer roles will be available.

Operated by Volunteer Central Vic, a service of Cobaw Community Health, and hosted by Goldfields Libraries, the Volunteer Resource Centres will be a place for interested people to drop in and find out about volunteering.

The centres will assist prospective volunteers to link with volunteer opportunities across a wide range of community organisations. Information and support for those interested in volunteering will be on offer along with assistance for people to find and apply for roles on the spot.

The centres will also offer support and resources to volunteer organisations looking to recruit volunteers.

Evening dining at the Boathouse Restaurant

I

T'S been a long time coming, almost 30 years, but finally you can dine, on Friday and Saturday nights, at the Boathouse Restaurant @ Lake Daylesford. And so, last Friday, we did. And it was awesome.

The evening started with a glass of bubbles on the balcony with what must be one of the loveliest views in the region. Ducks glided silently by, the water shimmered and the sun slowly dipped below the trees. Time for a chardonnay ($9.50) and food. (Oh, there is an extensive drinks menu with plenty of wines by the glass.)

The menu has many new items but never fear, the favourites, think Mussels ($25), Beer battered gummy shark ($26.50) and Linguine pasta ($29), are all still there. But we decided it was time to step out of our comfort zone.

Entrees For my entree I chose the House-cured ocean trout, horseradish cream, watercress & apple salad ($18). It was delicious. A huge serving of fabulously fresh slices of trout (I lived in Japan so I know a great sashimi) topped with a lovely, lively salad and a piquant horseradish cream. Just yum. And could easily be a main.

Kyle opted for the Onion bhaji - Indian spiced onion fritters with raita ($18).

Again, a big serve, of deliciously crunchy fritters. Loads of flavour going on here and the raita was one of the best we have tasted. It's set to become a favourite.

Of course, if you really can't decide and want a bit of everything, ask for the Boathouse grazing plate - pork terrine, ocean trout, taramasalata, goat's cheese, olives, beetroot relish, chorizo and jamon ($32). It's a great plate to share with loads of local produce. If you need a hand with the menu, just ask. Dani was our friendly waiter!

Mains I usually, as Boathouse Restaurant owners Claire and Susanne would attest to, jump straight to either the mussels or pasta, but I also love a good salad so chose the Kashmiri kumara salad - Roasted sweet potato, pomegranate and seeds with an orange blossom dressing ($24). It was fantastic. A literal explosion of umami flavour with every mouthful - those slightly tart pomegranates popping open among the sweetness of the potato and the crunch of the seeds - and then dressing just added another layer. If you love a special salad, you will love this.

Meanwhile Kyle decided on the Confit duck leg with red curry coconut dressing, Asian slaw and basmati rice ($32). This is another seriously good dish. The duck was perfectly cooked with crispy skin, the salad flavours complex and complementary and the dressing added a hint of heat, cooled by the rice. Another new favourite.

Two more new kids on the block, which I saw plenty of other diners ordering are the Grilled barramundi fillet - barramundi with a warm broccolini, asparagus, peas and crushed kipfler salad with peppered goats curd ($32) or the Fresh figs and jamon salad - fresh figs, jamon, buffalo mozzarella, pinenuts and salad greens with apple balsamic ($27). Both were getting rave reviews.

Dessert There are five desserts to choose from, all priced at $14. We went with Susanne's suggestions and ordered the Classic vanilla bean brulee - with pistachio and orange biscotti and the Chocolate delice - rich chocolate delice with dulce de leche and mint crisps. OMG to both. The first was the perfect brulee and we just cracked it open and got stuck in. The second, you can see it above, was, as Kyle said, "death by chocolate".

Chocolate, thick caramel - that's the dulce de leche bit - and delicious crunches of biscuit, mint and more chocolate. Chocolate coma guaranteed.

Other desserts are the Chocolate fondant - with raspberry coulis and vanilla ice cream, Orange blossom & honey pannacotta - with fresh fig and honeycomb and Mango & coconut cassata - chai coconut semifreddo, mango sorbet with Italian meringue.

Something else The original boathouse was built in the early 1930s, after Lake Daylesford was created and opened in 1929. It became a dining venue, think cafe, coffee and cake, in the 1990s.

Claire Levine and Susanne Devine, formerly of The Farmers Arms in Daylesford, took over two years ago and have steadily transformed the Boathouse Restaurant into a elegant dining establishment offering breakfast, lunch and now, dinner, with indoor and outdoor seating, perfect for the warmer months. Kingston Avenue

OR 100 years the 286 Heritage Victoria-listed elms in the Avenue of Honour at Kingston have represented the WW1 service of men and women of the former Creswick Shire.

On November 11, Armistice Day, a commemorative service and celebration will take place in the Kingston Avenue at the Obelisk. The free family event runs from 9am to 4pm. Formal proceedings begin at 10.15am with the Creswick Brass Band, Creswick Smeaton RSL and the Creswick Light Horse.

After the commemoration, a celebration will take place to mark the 100 years of the Armistice and planting of the Avenue. Food vans, musical entertainment, displays of historical interest, and a large exhibition of steam and vintage machinery will be on site. Activities for children include the Tree Trail, maze and games of the time.

The Rex on hold but already taking shape

EPBURN Shire Council is offering tours of The Rex building in Vincent Street, Daylesford.

Tours are available this Wednesday, October 24 every hour from 1pm to 6pm. Call Customer Service on 5348 2306 to make a booking.

The Local took up the offer last week and it's an interesting wander through the Hepburn Hub - what will be the Daylesford Community Theatre upstairs, the library in the middle of the building and council's customer service and desks to the rear.

While work has halted on the project as the council applies for a planning permit, quite a lot has already been carried out. The theatre building is almost finished on the outside, there are meeting room shells in the council area and skylights beaming in light from the carpark above.

Council's senior project manager Richard Howell was an informative tour guide and happy to answer all questions.

Mr Howell said if the planning permit went to plan, The Rex would be open this time next year. However, if there were objections, and the permit went before VCAT it could be two years before the doors were opened.

The Rex is stage one of a broader program including upgrades to the Daylesford Swimming Pool and the Daylesford Town Hall.

Trentham Cottage Garden Flower Show looking for entries

HE Trentham Cottage Garden Flower Show will be held at the Trentham Neighbourhood Centre on Saturday, November 24 from 1pm to 5pm.

Bells Water Gardens has been in the water garden business for over 25 years, building and maintaining ponds and growing a diverse range of aquatic plants for the nursery trade and public.

We are passionate about building natural eco-system ponds, adding beauty and encouraging wildlife, allowing interaction with nature. Water gardens built by us are quiet, contemplative places to rest and energise the senses.

The show, run by St George’s Anglican Church, is now in its fourth year in Trentham offering a well-run event with a homely feel.

No-one needs to be a professional flower arranger to take part, they simply need to love and celebrate flowers and gardens in this part of the world where things “just grow”. Entry forms will be available from the Trentham Post Office, the Trentham Neighbourhood Centre and all around Trentham early next month.

There are categories for both children and adults and prizes to win. The two categories for both prep/1/2 and grades 3/4 are Posy of Spring Flowers and Miniature Garden using a shoebox lid with pebbles, bark, seeds and other natural materials.

Grades 5/6 and adults have a choice of eight categories: Single rose, Container of Mixed Roses, Flowers in an Unusual Container, Arrangement in a Tea Cup, Green Arrangement, Posy, One Beautiful Flower, and a Collection of Cut Flowers.

All plants and flowers must be from a home garden. Each entry is $2 and a gold coin donation is asked at the door for entry. There is a Best in Show Award and a People’s Choice Award.

On the day there will be a raffle, a well-stocked garden stall, and, of course, Devonshire teas.
