The Local's motto is to "connect the community" by bringing people closer with great features on amazing local people and ensuring you know what is happening around your community whether that's a festival, a fete or maybe just a great special from one of our fantastic advertisers. Content is key.

We love writing about local people doing inspiring things and even local people doing ordinary things. And as some people, mostly politicians, have found out, if you are not local you will not appear in the pages of The Local.

You will find The Local, and all the back copies, online at www.tlnews.com.au and we deliver bulk drops throughout the region along with smaller "cafe" packs to every cafe, hotel, bar and restaurant we can find. We've even heard of The Local turning up in places like a cafe in St Kilda and a bar in Bali! All up we have a print and online readership of about 14,000.

Reverend Neil Fitzgerald held the service and blessed several dogs, a turtle and a bird.

The day is also known as St Francis of Assisi Day - with St Francis known as the patron saint of animals.

As Reverend Fitzgerald blessed the animals, the music from All Things Bright and Beautiful was played.

Donna: What does your art mean to you?

HILLIP Edwards was a country boy growing up in Warragul in East Phillip: The work for me is about place and solitude. Donna: When did you get into art?

Phillip: I always knew that I had a little gift even in the early years of high school.

That gift is curious observation I suppose and that little gift needs to be exercised/ used. I started painting seriously at 13 and then after high school I graduated with a fine arts degree (in painting) from the Victorian College of the Arts.

Donna: What's your medium?

Phillip: At present I’m focusing on large-scale watercolour landscapes of Mt Buffalo and the Daylesford surrounds and heading off this week to the Flinders Ranges to start a body of new work. When time permits I also sculpt in timber and steel.

Donna: What do you hope your art says to others?

Phillip: I hope that my art allows people to simply enjoy beauty. What I love about landscape painting is that it's not trying to “teach something” or has a particular “ideological axe to grind”. It's my view of nature and beauty simply to be enjoyed. Often these simple places and moments are overlooked and a painting captures it better than a photo could ever do.

I suppose I’ll be helping setting up and bumping out. I’m in charge of the online part this year photographing works for the show and updating the website.

Donna: Apart from the art show where can people see your work?

Phillip: The best place to see my work is my website www.phillipedwards.net or Instagram phillip.edwards.artist. I currently have work at Australian Galleries Stock Rooms, Convent Gallery, Daylesford, three at Cascade Gallery, Maldon due to open October 13, and four pieces at Metropolis Gallery, Geelong.

Donna: What's your Central Highlands story?

Phillip: I moved up to the Central Highlands a year ago, settling in Bullarto.

Bullarto is so fantastic and reminds me of East Gippsland. The draw to the region is threefold - it's country not Melbourne where I had lived for 17 years, the artistic and vibrant community that makes up the Daylesford melting pot, and my beautiful partner lives in Hepburn Springs.

Donna: Anything else you would like to add?

Phillip: I’m slowly building a gallery/studio/class space in Bullarto with a hope of trading in the new year. Don’t hold me to that...everything in its time.

Donations on their way to New South Wales

ROOKE Gedling and Chris Kendall of Bullarto are collecting donations to help struggling farming families in northwestern New South Wales.

They will be leaving on December 8 to deliver a load of supplies up there so make sure you get a donation to them before that date. You can go to their Facebook page The Farmers Run for more information on how to help.

Small acts of kindness can make a big difference and it was earlier on this year, after hearing distressing stories coming out of drought-affected communities that Brooke and Chris sought to try to find a way to offer relief to those caught in such terrible adversity.

But instead of just following the usual channels through established charities they chose to gather donations of food and gifts from their friends and deliver it to the worst hit areas personally, paying for the trip themselves. They asked around their local community for contributions and set up a modest Facebook page to help spread the word.

“I watched a video on the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners Facebook page about their friends who had committed suicide because they couldn’t provide for their families,” says Brooke.

“We wanted to do something to help and so we started gathering contributions to take up to those suffering farmers at the end of the year because everybody deserves to have a decent Christmas.”

But what started out as a personal desire to help people in need took on its own momentum. Their Facebook page was soon being shared across the region and in no time at all they were getting support from not only individuals but local businesses and charities as well.

“We’ve had support come from all over the place including enquiries from as far away as Melton. Michelle Clifford from the Daylesford Community Op Shop set up a donation tin and Mercato Restaurant has been a great supporter. Trentham IGA also has a drop-off point and donation box in their store.”

For anyone interested in donating, with The Farmers Run ute already almost overflowing, vouchers would be most appreciated to add to the slabs of bottled water, long-life milk, rice, canned goods and other dry pantry food. And the pets haven't been forgotten either with tinned food and toys.

Brooke and Chris are also happy to take Christmas presents for kids and adults plus treats such as shortbread, long-life puddings or anything else for the table Christmas day. However please remember, The Farmers Run is not an official charity and cannot take cash donations. Brooke suggests leaving money at the donation tins in Trentham and Daylesford that can then be converted to IGA vouchers.

It is still eight weeks until Brooke and Chris depart but the donations are quickly filling up their spare room. “Everyone has been getting onboard, its been awesome,” says Chris. “We were offered the SES building in Daylesford to store everything but we’ve just decided to keep it here in our spare room and caravan.”

Upon leaving in December they plan to be away for eight days. Their first destination will be the Silverton Pub to talk to the owner in regards to neighbouring communities and families that need help. After that Brooke and Chris will head on to the areas around Broken Hill but have no set route except where people direct them to go.

“We are going to try to provide for roughly 10 families with whatever we can fit in our little ute and possibly a trailer. But if the drought continues we will definitely be doing it again next year, possibly with a truck.”

Resourceful creative thinkers looking to sustainability

NNA Winneke and Mat Boyle, the owners of the Salvage Yard in Castlemaine, are a farmer’s daughter and gardener’s son. Anna says she was a rather itinerant country girl, sculptor, jeweller, puppeteer, traveller and art and drama teacher while Mat was an entirely dependable earth builder with a strong Protestant work ethic. Mat had grown up, lived and worked in the earth building industry around Eltham his entire life while Anna had not spent more than six months in one place since leaving home. Both shared a love of making and collecting. Anna chatted with Donna Kelly.

Donna: How did you meet?

Anna: It was sort of “love at hard-earned second sight”. I was living at the foot of Mt Bogong as he was travelling through…it must have been his ratbaggy old troopy that caused me to stop my bike and dig deep for the courage to ask Mat and his mate if they wanted to come for a swim at the “mermaid pools”. (It was rather hot and it sounded like a siren song at work in hindsight.) It worked and we all ended up eating pizza and sharing tales. It was a whole lot of toing and froing between Tassie and Eltham henceforth but 18 months later we finally got it together. Exhausted by the process I think!

Donna: How did the Salvage Yard come into being? Is it a recycling ethos?

Anna: I don’t think that either of us feel particularly virtuous about our decision to start up a salvage yard, but of course, yes, it is our sickness for collecting, validated as our recycling ethos “at work”. Actually, we built a house together, for friends and from that (after baby number one) decided to focus on one thing properly rather than a number of things half-arsed. I gave up my short-lived teaching career and that was the beginning of Pumphouse Design and Building Works.

Both of us never, ever consider buying something new when we could use what was lying around. That was obviously the ethos of the Eltham earth building community, but so too of my upbringing on a remote cattle station. Farmers are notorious hoarders, for good reason, no money and no time to drive for a part. It means that I was taught to be resourceful with what I had lying around - for that reason alone, my entire teen and early adult years were held together with baling twine. Never a ball far away. Don’t get me started with its uses.

We were young and had energy to recycle everything, which is fantastic. So our early projects were totally idealistic, built entirely from reclaimed materials and hugely labour-intensive. When you know what is being done out there in the deconstruction/construction industry…

If you spend the best part of two decades in a grubby industry like the building industry where everything is like snatch and grab and you know that on every block in every city in Australia every day, heritage value houses are being crunched by demolishers at the instruction of the developer, you just can’t unknow it. And if we had it in our resources to try and raise the shameful profile of Australia’s deconstruction laws and put a fraction of that good gear back into circulation, how could we not do that?

The Castlemaine community actually was the thing that gave us the incentive and confidence to start a salvage yard. It was the community of resourceful creative thinkers always looking for a more sustainable and interesting way to build that really propelled the project. Over 15 years building locally, Mat must have unofficially “consulted” thousands of hours for owner-building folk. Helping people design recycled elements into their projects and inevitably sourcing and selling materials off our block in Fryerstown on the side. We always knew that Central Victoria was a great place for a really well-resourced recycle yard.

We had spent enough time doing our market research, we were exhausted with the constraints, liability and responsibilities of being registered builders and were looking to contribute something with a little more substance. When the opportunity came up to purchase industrial land in the middle of town - albeit a pretty tricky, raw site, we jumped at it with a view to selling our beautiful property in Fryerstown to pay for the luxury of toiling in the dust once again.

Donna: Who are your customers?

Anna: It’s amazing and actually the best thing about working here. We have served everybody from owner-builders, registered builders, architects, well-known film makers wanting to build chook sheds, very famous Australian actors, local kids making billy carts, all the way to Maggie Beer (yep, nearly fell over that day), looking for a gate. And my very favourite customers are those older gentlemen who approach me in the yard with “g’day love, is the boss in?”.

Donna: What’s the strangest thing that has come across your business?

Anna: Last year it was 300 beautifully handcrafted timber chairs without their seats, found under the house of a deceased estate. The saddest part of that is that the demolisher saved us approximately 12 of them and crushed the rest. I have to say that this week it is a floodlight from the front of a 1940s naval warship.

Donna: What’s the strangest thing someone has asked for?

Anna: Hmmm, I have to admit that I still find it jaw dropping when somebody asks for a double-glazed window, casement fittings in a hardwood frame to fit a space exactly 2561mm x 1578mm. We have three acres of double glazing and absolutely no inventory. Apart from that I think that last week when a fellow requested a heated towel rail, but not the towel rail, no, the little fixing arms that attach it to the wall, not even those, but just the little rubber grommets that go under them. Ugh! Donna: Why the move to the Central Highlands?

Anna: We did move here in 2001. Our mates had bought some land and had asked Mat to build them a mud brick house. I was teaching in Hobart at the time and was feeling rather settled in the south of Tasmania, but, always keen for an adventure and a challenge, I agreed to move over to this dry land and build this house, come what may. I don’t think either of us really imagined staying. I always longed for rivers and deep soil for gardens and we both were from mountain country.

We always assumed that we would finish the project and move somewhere else. But life had other plans for us. And before you know it you are suitably encumbered with children, a Ford Blitz truck and a salvage yard, and it is a little tricky to untangle that somehow.

Donna: That’s quite a life so far, anything else you would like to add?

Anna: The waste from the domestic building industry contributes to over 45 per cent of the world’s entire landfill. Staggering statistics widely available everywhere.

We all know it and yet our powers that be still persist in making it nearly impossible for houses to be stripped safely and effectively by hand, as it requires. We believe that there should be a great salvage yard in every suburb and town across the country and more education around feeling confident to work with materials that are often in better condition today than they were the day they were a new resource, 50 to 150 years ago. The salvage industry is still operating under a film of “renegade” and the profile of the ubiquitous “house stripper” is still elusive - but they are the crucial link between a perfectly great house and a hole in the ground.

Pick me, pick me...

Just sayin’...

E'VE been dog sitting over the school holidays - with a saluki.

Now, if you don't know what that is, you're not alone. I had no idea but I Googled it, and it's a sort of Persian greyhound.

They are very fast, we're talking about 70km/h, and in the old days they were used to hunt. To give them extra speed they were often thrown at their prey by their owners, off horses. A sort of running start. True story. Unless someone has been on Wikipedia and changed it.

Anyway, I digress. This particular saluki hails from Abu Dhabi. Our friends were living there, mum, dad and two kids, when they found this rescue pooch and named her Foxy.

Then it came time for them to return to Australia. The dad, lovely bloke that he is, found out the cost of returning with a dog, and wondered if perhaps they could exchange her for a goldfish. But the mum, smart woman, had already told the kids Foxy was their "forever dog" and it was three against one.

So, you are wondering, how much could it cost? Try $7000 with flights and quarantine.

So Foxy came home and the dad remains in Abu Dhabi - they couldn't afford everyone.

Anyway, Foxy is a very pretty dog. Nice caramel colour with white socks, looks like she is smiling a lot and with a beautiful big bushy tail. The sort of dog people stop to pat and admire.

So it's been quite nice to look after a well-mannered, pretty dog although we have resurrected sticks on our reserve walks to ward off any free-range dogs which come charging as their owners yell from behind "don't worry, they're friendly". Because while Foxy has been a pleasure, she is not our dog, and we don't quite know her nature, and we certainly don't want to return her with an injury.

It's also weird because our last memories are of old dogs. But Foxy is a youthful five, and as flexible and sprightly as you can imagine. I open the back door of the ute and in she springs. The verandah steps, all five of them, are taken at one leap, up and down.

Time for new dogs? I don't know. While it has been lovely minding Foxy I must also say I quite like the freedom of not having to be home at a certain time, or having a night away and thinking "stuff it, let's stay another". I don't know if that's selfish, or as one woman told me once, "Maybe you have given all your love - there's no more to give".

Maybe dog minding is the answer. Anyone need a sitter?

This will provide further insight on how self-determination and treaty can strengthen Victorian Aboriginal communities.

The program will also help ensure the treaty process continues to be guided by Aboriginal voices and prepare the Aboriginal community for the establishment of the Aboriginal Representative Body and eventual treaty negotiations.

Insights obtained through the program will be used by the Victorian Treaty Advancement Commission as it works to establish the Aboriginal Representative Body as part of the next phase of the treaty process.

Minister Hutchins said treaty would have benefits for all Victorians – promoting reconciliation, fostering shared pride in Aboriginal culture and helping to heal the wounds of the past.

Golfers could win a new car, valued at up to $25,000, from Kings Cars for any hole-in-one on the 2nd during the four-person ambrose event.

"They have all been coming every year but sadly Ian died recently and Mark and Tony will be overseas for this event. That's why we have Greg and Ian coming along this year.

"It's a great day, lots of fun, and people look forward to taking part."

A Refugee Welcome Zone is a local government area which has made a pledge to embrace refugees into the community, uphold the human rights of refugees, demonstrate compassion for refugees and enhance cultural and religious diversity in the community.

The initiative began in 2002 through the Refugee Council of Australia, and there are currently 155 Refugee Welcome Zones in Australia with more than 40 listed in Victoria.

Council’s ceremony will be attended by representatives from Macedon Ranges Rural Australians for Refugees, Refugee Council of Australia, National Rural Australians for Refugees, Central Victorian Refugee Support Network and the Loddon Campaspe Multicultural Service.

Mayor Jennifer Anderson will sign the declaration certificate on behalf of Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

“Council is committed to making the health and well-being of our residents a priority,” she said.

“Through signing this declaration, we’re demonstrating our intolerance of racism and discrimination, and fostering a culture of respect and diversity.

“We welcome refugees in our community, and the positive impact they make in terms of the diversity they bring, as well as the many other countless offerings they have to share.”

IKE many people I was very surprised to learn of the cancellation of the five-day Live.

Love.Life Festival. (The Local, September 24, Issue 133, p3.)

I read the DM Tourism (Daylesford Macedon Tourism) message on its website but I think that they need to demonstrate more transparency and accountability when it comes to explaining what actually went wrong with the festival. I don't believe it is sufficient to say "unexpected operational challenges and unforeseen financial circumstances have made it difficult for the...program to proceed", and leave it at that.

DM Tourism secured a grant of $450,000 over three years. For that amount of money you would have to go through a lot of hoops, including providing a detailed business plan, setting out a profit and loss and cash flow, and a detailed plan of how the organisation was going to achieve its goals. Where was the mismatch between the details in its business plan and what actually happened?

DM Tourism need to explain to the community exactly what were the "unexpected" challenges.

The "faces" of the festival, co-creative directors, David Bromley and Kate Ceberano, (pictured at a launch, right) have not been prepared to comment on the demise of the festival. I think we are entitled to know on what basis they were engaged, what fees were involved and what were the expected deliverables from them?

But going back to first principles, on what evidence did DM Tourism base the premise that a five-day festival commencing on a Wednesday, would be successful in a town like Daylesford?

It is a well-known fact that weekends are generally the busiest days of the week. The only other festival comparison would be with ChillOut, which is a longestablished, unique festival over four days, Thursday to Monday.

I’m not against more festivals and having a diverse range of artistic events in town. $450,000 is a lot of money and there are many community projects and services for which $450,000 would make a significant difference.

Unless DM Tourism demonstrate more transparency and accountability, I believe it calls into question other judgement calls they have made.

These include committing a $55,000 grant to a feasibility study into an opera venue at Lake Daylesford.

What is the rationale and evidence which suggests that this would be appropriate at that location?

I, along with my fellow community members, believe an explanation is required.

I

T IS is an argument that has been going for decades, and one that our toothless unwashed cousins won’t agree with the rest of us on.

No, I am not talking about the grand final and Collingwood supporters, I am talking about Queenslanders and their refusal to embrace daylight saving time (DST).

Yes, I know I’m not a Queenslander but I reckon I can talk about this subject with some authority, because I have not only visited most of the states and territories, I have lived in all but three of them. Yes, the boring ones, the ACT and SA, oh and don’t forget Tassie. In my almost 25 years of being in this great land I have lived in South East Queensland, Far North Queensland, Northern Territory and the armpit of Australia, the great North West (aka The Pilbara).

Recently I heard of an argument against daylight saving from a sun bunny in Queensland. This particular sun-kissed speculator argued that DST would be bad for the environment. If an extra hour of sunlight was to be introduced, he was espousing global warning. Now that’s a person who missed geography and science 101 – what the..?

Other arguments cited include the fading of curtains and furnishings and those poor children having to get up an hour earlier. According to a survey conducted in The Observer “changing the clocks backwards and forwards is a hassle.” And then there is the “cow milking theory”, from the same survey, which says if a cow is milked every day at 4am and is suddenly milked at 3am, its milk supply will drop. “We might know the clocks have changed, but cows don't”, again, what the...

The sun-kissed natives gave it a go back in 1989 which lasted a full three years and then swiftly kicked it out again but if there ever was a state that needed DST it is Queensland.

Anyway, back to the wonderful Central Highlands in this wonderful state of Victoria. I love our long DST season, a solid sixth months of basking in the evening sun, listening to the cockies roosting, bloody beautiful.

Dennis: a romantic and an enthusiast

ENNIS Carter is supremely optimistic. The Kyneton architect’s sunny outlook belies his cancer diagnosis as he pronounces himself both a romantic and an enthusiast.

The cancer Dennis and his artist wife Karen Ward are watching the news on TV. He’s been working on a project in Swan Hill. On comes a story about the town. “What’s Swan Hill?” asks Dennis, his face terrifyingly blank.

Thinking he'd had a stroke, Karen rings their doctor. For five hours they wait at the hospital in Bendigo, where they then lived. By a fluke, a visiting doctor says Dennis has temporal amnesia, “like a lost computer file,” Dennis explains.

Over the next hours his memory begins to return.

Fast forward a few years of wellness and un-wellness, to a particular day when body pain and headache pain become unbearable.

A visit to Dennis’s GP indicates serious and mysterious things are going on. An hour later Dennis finds himself at St John Hospital in critical care with this unknown illness. A specialist is called and, after brief questioning, a diagnosis of temporal arteritis is made. Massive doses of cortisone follow.

He was close to being blind and then likely dead from rapid inflammation of arteries in the head that was causing pressure to the brain and organs to shut down.

To round things out, doctors are unable to operate because Dennis has prostate cancer, which is spreading. Female hormones called estrogen are used to fight this cancer.

Comes a chance encounter with a Peter Mac doctor at the Bendigo Base Hospital.

He had just bought a house and Dennis, in his friendly way, discussed it with him before the doctor asked about his illness.

“There’s this new trial,” he tells Dennis Cut to the Peter Mac in Melbourne, where Dennis joins just 1500 people around the world on this trial. “It’s working,” he says. Four large tablets daily and threemonthly estrogen implants keep him going, limiting his testosterone and stopping the cancer tumour from growing. Then there are painful side effects of juggling drugs.

“I’m a medical work of art,” chuckles the 76-year-old.

“But I often forget that I’m ill. I know I’m tired and get aches and pains, but I also know I’m terribly fortunate. And after four years I can get back to work, at least part time.”

Dennis and Karen have high praise for their family doctor in Bendigo, Dennis O’Connor. “I had the best examples of fine collaboration and generosity from my doctors.”

For her part, Karen remembers the worst days. “When he said everything is closing down and staff would not talk to me I went home and taught myself to tile.”

She fought her anxiety by getting up at 3am and starting again. “They first looked like Fred Flintstone tiles.” As well, she says of their ordeal: “Our love has grown.”

Life and the town In another life, Dennis wrote a column on architecture for The Age, his pieces on living with the environment and working communally a foretaste of what has begun.

He’s also a guitarist and has been a passionate fly fisherman, with a library of about 700 books on the topic. “When I get tired I bounce from one thing to the other.”

In another life, too, their home in the Yarraside suburb of Alphington burnt down nearly 30 years ago. “It took us at least 15 years to get over that,” says Karen.

“We would refer to events as happening 'Before the Fire and After the Fire'.”

Their year in Kyneton has been marked by twice-daily walks along the Campaspe River with their four-year-old Brinkley, a king poodle/golden retriever cross, where they observe a caring community. “The river walk is a pleasurable and a learning experience, where we meet people, 95 per cent of whom are happy to have a chat and many, from all walks of life, are becoming friends. Kyneton also seems to care for many disabled people and we’ve found there is some enlightened employment for these people.”

Dennis firmly believes that as a professional he should give back to the community. He is passionate about collaboration, helping to set up a regular architects’ contact group that works at finding good builders, contractors and specialist tradies. He was delighted to find recently that two members of a threeperson local architects’ practice got married at the weekend. Both are men.

Meanwhile, with Karen’s help, he is adapting his Age columns for a book, enjoying grandchildren in Melbourne and interstate, and knowing what Swan Hill is.

“After all,” he says, “my mother lived to 93.”

Now living in Bullarto, Janine is continuing her passion with circuit training at her fitness centre for people of all levels of fitness. The training includes stretching, core fitness and boxing technique - minus the sparring!

“I never fought or sparred, it's not my thing, but I trained just as hard as the fighters, loved each training session and still think the art of amateur boxing is one of the most graceful and hardest things I have ever done, add to it stretching and core strength training and you have the complete package.

"What I offer is a controlled environment with personal tuition. There are only eight people in each class or I can also provide private one-on-one training. Some people worry they will not be fit enough but everyone trains at their own pace, it's not a competition.

"My own training still continues and my enthusiasm never fades. And it is something I love to share.”

Compassionate May helping at Hepburn House

ROM her home in China, to running many Aussie businesses and now as a resident at Hepburn House, May Rose is living quite the happy life.

“It is my home, and I like everything about Hepburn House - the friends I have made and all of the staff members,” May says.

A government-funded aged care facility, Hepburn House can accommodate all levels of care from those such as May who make it their permanent home, to respite care.

Having followed her brother to Australia as a young girl to study and learn English, May went to a boarding school in New South Wales where she met her husband John and began her working life.

“I worked for ABC Radio Australia, I stayed in that job for seven years.

Then John and I went into business, we had many different businesses over the years including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, cruise ships, exporting cattle, you name it.

"I also did a lot of charity work. I taught English to other immigrants, and I can speak seven different Chinese dialects and used that ability to do voluntary interpreting work.”

Now, with her working life behind her, May is continuing to help out staff at Hepburn House report that she is very compassionate, a great help to both residents and staff members.

“I'm a real busybody, and wish to continue to do good for others. I love helping people, and I feel that I have been so blessed and God has given me so much in life and all I want to do is pay it forward."

The College conducts and supports a wide variety of co-curricular activities for students and encourages students to participate in line with their ability, skill level and interest. Cocurricular activities fall within the following broad groupings – Camps; Community; Creative and Performing Arts; Debating and Public Speaking; Learning Area competitions and theme weeks; Sport; and also Special Activities including the College Production and Debutante Ball.

Sacred Heart College also has a strong community focus, with students encouraged to recognise and support those in need. The values of compassion, hospitality, justice and respect are at the core of these activities. This community focus can be seen in action when our students work in the Kyneton Community Kitchen. Run on a weekly basis and operating from the College’s Hospitality Centre, the Kitchen provides hospitality to local people who may find it difficult to access nourishing meals. The students are responsible for cooking, serving and cleaning in the kitchen, under supervision of staff, and find it a rewarding experience on many levels. The College also raises funds as well as understanding of those in need through a team of students known as Mercy@Work. This group informs the College community about various topics and sets activities and goals for fundraising to support those who need it most.

Another special co-curricular activity is the Indigenous Immersion Program which offers our students a richness of opportunities, through a hands-on experience of the uniqueness of Aboriginal culture, spirituality and language. Each year students in Years 10 and 11 can apply to participate in our Indigenous Immersion Trip to Jarlmadangah Burru (250 kms east of Broome). This program was established in 2006 and continues now through collaboration with the Community Elders and school staff. A key component of this visit is the time spent engaged in classroom activities at the Nyikina Mangala Community School.

Through the variety of experiences on offer, both in the classroom and from the broad range of co-curricular experiences, students emerge from their educational journey at Sacred Heart College with the confidence and the courage to pursue their individual pathways and embrace the challenges of the future as global citizens. HERE'S one great advantage of spring taking its time to really settle down and that is there's still plenty of time for spring plantings, and less chance of frosty mornings.

So, whatever you do plant now will get off to a really good start, although there's still no great hurry to plant out your tomato seedlings.

Even in sunny South Adelaide we would use the "race that stops the nation" as the starting date for tomatoes and, with a sprinkle of the right fertiliser and judicious watering, they would literally take off at a gallop.

Our family's long-held trick for success is to select the sturdiest, weather-worn looking tomato seedlings and leave them in the punnet (in those days strawberry punnets) in a warm, sunny spot. Don't plant out until the stems turn a deep purple and the leaves a little yellow.

Water them frugally and don't feed them until they become really established.

You want fruit, not lots of lush growth. Remove the first flush of flowers, then give the plants a good feed and regular soakings once the second flush of flowers arrive.

This will ensure that all further activity is directed to the fruit rather than leaves. Take care to water only around the roots as damp leaves at night are sure to result in all kinds of fungal and viral problems.

Spring, once it is truly here, is a delightful time of year with the welcoming of myriad blooms and fresh young growth from plants of all kinds, especially the deciduous ones like the gorgeous magnolias such as the many forms of the Chinese magnolia M.soulangeana (pictured right) which grows into a neat little tree. Another delight for the spring garden is pieris japonica or Japanese temple bells (pictured far right), a compact evergreen shrub growing best in similar conditions to camellias and azaleas.

Now that I've got you really into the mood and rearing to get the garden in shape, here's a quick checklist to get you started:

Overgrown pot plants There's still time to re-pot them into larger tubs or out into the garden bed before the weather turns hot. Remember to trim off all rank or sickly growth and spread a handful of blood and bone around each plant to ensure healthy new growth.

Spring flowering bulbs These need to retain their leaves as long as possible after they have finished flowering because this is the time they build up strong bulbs and develop next season's blooms. They might look a little untidy for a few weeks but if you leave it until they are completely withered and brown before you snip them off, your reward will be a beautiful and colourful spring next year.

Citrus care This is clean-up time for citrus trees, time to remove weak, spindly growth and dead wood from the trees. As citrus grow they tend to accumulate dead, woody twigs and light growth towards the centre of the tree. Using sharp secateurs, open up the centre of the tree and allow plenty of sunlight in, thus preventing the build up of mould, fungal disease and insect pests that thrive on weak, shaded growth. It will also encourage fruit development. Don't remove too much growth from the top to protect young growth and fruit from the scorching hot summer sun. Use an all-purpose garden spray to keep insect pests and diseases at bay.

HE greatest gift you can give someone is their own space...

Once upon a time I bought a cubby house. At the time I thought the prefab, screw together, timber cubby with verandah was worth the cost as it saved me a lot of design, measuring, buying and constructing time. It was an absolute hit with the young daughter.

Fast forward 20 years and I have been looking at garden studios. It’s the prefab room you can buy flat packed and assemble or get assembled by an expert. The tiny house or extra room has been revolutionised. It is the extra room for the teenager, elderly parent, guest or study/studio. The additions and specifications are completely dependent on your needs and can include power and wi-fi, windows, insulation, solar cells, plumbing, kitchenettes and rain tanks - all subject to council regulations.

These "drop-in" rooms have become popular for a few reasons. Houses are getting harder to afford. Families like where they are living but sometimes want extra space. Extra space now doesn’t mean you have to sell and move with all the costs and effort involved. These portable extra rooms can be removed and sold when no longer needed. There is also the idea that we no longer move out of a house and into another, you batten down your tiny house and move it to a new location.

Families and friends can each have their own tiny house on a shared piece of land. Communal, community living may not be dead after all. Providing the village once again, to raise the next generation.

This kind of living certainly wouldn’t suit everybody. It is the opposite of the McMansion and keeping up with the Joneses. You need to be happy with small spaces and living minimally.

Environmentally friendly it can be and with a low environmental footprint. Council regulations will limit what you can do, however. City councils have a maximum size for the structure before requiring permits and approval. Local councils assure me that each property had to be assessed on its merits, that is, heritage overlay, fire-risk management, purpose and construction for starters.

My research has found a converted container that was used at a home show cost $20,000. A tiny house kitted with Japanese-style fold-out table, bed, shower and kitchen with appropriate joinery was $100,000. Factor in providing a suitable flat site and delivery costs. You will need to do the numbers for your budget and life needs to see if it is a viable option. Personally, I am keeping the teenager inside the family home and retreating to the stand-alone studio in the back garden. A door lock on the studio is essential. Happy retreating. Indre Kisonas

Artwork unveiled

A

BORIGINAL art has been unveiled at Kyneton District Health.

The transparent artwork, designed by Taungurung artist Maddi Moser, sits on interior windows in the main entrance of the hospital.

KDH chief executive officer Maree Cuddihy said hosting the artwork at the main entrance held great significance to the service.

“We asked local artists from the Taungurung Clans to submit artwork inspired by their Taungurung culture. Maddi’s work blew us away and really captured our intention to recognise the history and culture of the indigenous people in our region.”

The unveiling ceremony began with a Welcome to Country by Peter Moser, a Taungurung Elder and uncle to artist Maddi Moser.

PRING Park Nursery at Eganstown celebrates 25 years in business this month. What started out as a hobby in 1988 propagating and potting plants at the new family home, with Chris’ passion became a business with the support of his parents Ken and Dot Rae, all pictured above.

Becoming a specialist in roses, the business has supplied many rose plants to all states of Australia including roses sent to Dry River Station in remote Central Australia where it was a day’s drive to reach the mail box to collect their mail order roses.

Spring Park Nursery has been an exhibitor at Melbourne International Flower Show, Ballarat Begonia festival, Budburst, Spring Fest as well as a regular participant in local markets and a long-time supporter of the Daylesford and Kingston shows, Daylesford Girl Guides mentor program as well as many other garden events.

Ken and Chris have also presented many talks to gardening clubs over the years as well as the three of them hosting many bus tours and garden groups that visit the nursery annually.

Breeding new varieties of plants has also been a part of the nursery over many years and they have released many new plants over time including Pacific Coast irises, kniphofia and penstemons. Ken’s passion for dahlias will see some new introductions from his breeding program this year.

Ken, Dot and Chris say one of the best things about their time in business has been the creation of some great garden friendships.

Cat's Cradle final production for 2018

AT'S Cradle, a mystery play by Leslie Sands and directed by Bette Sartore, is multi-award winning Cathouse Players' final production for 2018, in its pop-up theatre at the Kyneton Masonic Centre.

Twelve years after he failed to solve the kidnapping and disappearance of baby Matthew Fulton, Inspector Jack Frost returns to the small English village of Waverton with fresh, vital evidence.

With his retirement imminent, he's determined to re-open and solve this cold case, and enlists the help of an ambitious local journalist.

It's the eve of Matthew's older sister's wedding, but amid the happy and excited preparations, Frost's unexpected arrival causes consternation, even hostility amongst the tightlyknit locals, and especially the baby's mother. His relentless investigation eventually uncovers a terrible conspiracy of silence behind the baby's disappearance.

Guilty secrets emerge and confessions are made, which ultimately challenge and question his own personal beliefs. It's only in the final moments of this deeply absorbing play, as he recognises and accepts his moral dilemma, that Frost makes his choice. A choice which may provoke some after-show discussions amongst the audiences!

Cast members are Frank Sartore, Geoff Brookes, Maggie Browne, David Prince, Fiona Agyeman, Gemma Francis, Robert Wightwick and Pat Agyeman, with original music throughout from Cathouse composer, Galliano Sommavilla.

As an alternative to cold Kyneton evenings, Cathouse are trialling 2pm weekend matinees, with one evening show only, on Friday, October 26 at 8pm sharp.

Matinee dates are Saturdays, October 20 and 27 at 2pm with wine and cheese, and Sundays, October 21 and 28 at 2pm, serving High Tea with Bubbles.

Tickets are $25/$20 for all sessions and include pre-show sherries, program and interval refreshments. Doors open 30 minutes before showtime.

HE inaugural Art in the Vines at Hanging FREE concert will be held as part of the Rock Winery - An Exhibition of Sculpture, 2018 Kyneton Music Festival.

Music in the Churches presents The Sacred is the first of its kind to be held in the Salon at Sacred Heart College Chapel, Kyneton on Macedon Ranges.

From November 10 to March 31, visitors can wander through a trail of discovery on the winery’s expansive lawns, exploring 25 works of art, each of which has been hand-crafted by local, national and international sculptors.

Exhibition curator Malcolm Thomson said: "Sculptors who have their pieces on display at the likes of The Met Museum in New York, The National Gallery of Australia, The National Gallery of Victoria and many other prominent spaces around the world and Australia have signed up to participate."

Many of the sculptures have either been or are being created in artist studios dotted throughout Central Victoria while some will be hand-crafted onsite by one of the renowned artists-in-residence.

I went for something completely different to my normal choice - the Thai red beef curry with jasmine rice and coriander ($29). This was a lovely, complex dish, the curry not too hot, just a hint of warmth coming through, but loaded with texture and flavour, and with the beef just falling apart. It’s not just mounds of dirt and holes, but a place of gardens, horse yards and down OLD mining history in and around the tiny communities of the in a paddock the remnants of a hut featuring a huge fireplace typical of Lombardy in Yandoit hills is not extensively known; unlike operations closer to northern Italy.

Daylesford. The most well-known are German Gully, Glamorgan, “An old Italian had a bit of a hut there. They done a bit of prospecting, gold American Gully and the New Nuggety alluvial gold workings off the Yandoitmining and for the early settlers, they done a bit of fencing, 'bout 110 years ago.

But these areas do not provide the complete picture. Much of what took place was on private land or family affairs. One such area of activity was the lower reaches of Yandoit Creek and its surrounding hills. Today the stream attracts little notice but 160 odd years ago, it was being worked over by a range of people from Chinese to Swiss Italians.

Duncan McKinnon, a well-known identity around the area, holds more than 400 hectares of bush and farming land that sits next to the pretty little creek and his property holds some very interesting mining remnants. They have rarely been seen by outsiders and are in very good condition. Dunc provides a rolling commentary as we creep along old farm tracks in his muddy Subaru to view the remains dating from the 1850s.

"You can see a few spots where people have snuck in here to do detecting", says Dunc, pointing to some disturbed earth. "It’s lucky I didn’t catch them. Honestly, I don’t know why they didn’t just come ask."

The country is made of scattered box and red stringybark with minimal ground cover so all the mining features are clear and give you a good understanding of how the work was conducted. Our first stop featured an array of dams and water channels that allowed hydraulic sluicing even during the drier months and the remains of a well preserved horse-driven puddler. Next we drove to another gully to view tunnels carved into hillsides and old charcoal burners fashioned from immense boilers.

Suddenly, Dunc stopped the car and pointed to a non-descript patch of timber.

"See them trees? They are growing back now but that would have been a garden in there. They couldn’t just live on damper and mutton, they would have got scurvy."

What? Where? I couldn’t see anything, how does he know there was a garden there? This is the sort of stuff you never get to appreciate without having someone like this bloke to show you what you’re looking at.

And a lot of the time before the mining they worked on the threshers, sheep stations, harvesting, even ring barkin' trees.”

The people who did the work around here came from diverse backgrounds and included Mark Belanitch (Duncan’s great-grandfather ) who had an alluvial tunnel here in the 1870s. Luigi Germano also put in a mine there in the 1880s and the owner of the puddler was Jens Hansen from Sandon. Later Duncan’s neighbours George and Arthur Hird, whose land the McKinnons would eventually buy, also did mining around the area of Nuggety Hill, which the farm covers today. But according to Dunc, that was much later during the depression years.

Some of the most impressive but enigmatic diggings are to be found on a small patch of land on his boundary along Yandoit Creek. We entered through a roadside gate to an area of river flat that was clearly part of a long-gone farm. All about were feral ornamental trees and shrubs and nestled in beside the bank was an old stone dairy.

“This here? It was all Chinese back in the 1850s,” says Duncan. “They did some panning (for alluvial gold) here and had a market garden later on. A good trade, they went well, there’s good water, there’s a spring hereabouts. Later up there someone went and dug a tunnel into the hill. It’s bluestone, would have taken a bit.”

We went up and had a look. It was long and the tunnel came to a large junction with several shafts dropping down from the hill above. This was clearly a big operation and definitely done with a large team of diggers. But who were they? Duncan didn’t know. The nearest guess that he could offer was someone called Moroney whose name appears on historic allotments that covered the general area. However, no one could be entirely sure.

Like much of the early days of Yandoit, events, activities and the people involved in them are often ambiguous, ill-defined and shrouded in a little bit of mystery.

THE Daylesford Dunking Derby took place on Saturday, October 6 at Victoria Park. The event was held by the Daylesford Football & Netball Club and MND Victoria.

At the time of press it was estimated that well over $25,000 had been raised for research into motor neurone disease.
