We love writing about local people doing inspiring things and even local people doing ordinary things. And as some people, mostly politicians, have found out, if you are not local you will not appear in the pages of The Local.

Coach Josh Smith said the under 13s had won all but one game throughout the year.

Josh said all were playing their first competitive soccer this year although some had been with the club for four or five years already.

“They absolutely smashed it this year and have just done really well. We are up against Vic Park, who get another chance, or Sebastopol.”

Josh said one of the players, Zach, had taken out leading goal scorer in the league along with runner-up best and fairest, while his own son, Otis Smith (not pictured), had won best and fairest.

“A lot of the boys got a lot of votes.”

Greenfleet was joined by representatives from Telstra, The Walt Disney Company Australia, Europcar, Kings Transport, and Man With A Van, to revegetate the Newham property named The New Forest.

The saplings are overlooked by Hanging Rock, and will grow into a native forest to capture carbon emissions and protect the climate. They will also provide habitat for local wildlife, improved soil quality, and protection from the weather for the farm.

Land owner Kate Warne said the new trees would be enjoyed by their family for years to come.

“We are so excited to have worked with Greenfleet to revegetate our land – not only to help the climate, but also to create a better environment for our kids."

The cinema is planning to show current release films at the Daylesford Town Hall during the school holidays, commencing Friday, September 21 and running through to Sunday, October 7.

After the holidays the cinema will go back into recess because of bookings at town hall, and will re-commence on Friday, December 21 and screen through to Tuesday, January 29. After the Christmas holidays, the cinema plans to screen every weekend, Friday to Sunday, until the new cinema re-opens in The Rex. Daylesford Community Theatre president Gina Lyons said the organisation was thrilled to be able to offer films to the community and visitors at the town hall. “We have confirmed a program of latest release movies with our booking agent and we’re raring to go,” said Ms Lyons.

Clunes gets its sets appeal back J UST 167 years after the State’s first registered discovery of gold, at Clunes, the town is getting another boom, this time as a readymade set for films.

The wide streets and gold-era buildings will now be seen in the Jacki Weaver-Bryan Brown TV series Bloom, shot there over six days recently.

And, even more astonishing, after 40 years, visitors still turn up to see where the original Mad Max was filmed.

Not only that, for locals lucky enough to be picked as extras there’s up to $2000 a day to be made if they get a lead role in an advertisement, although most extras in ads get $20-$25 an hour.

A speaking role in a film can earn someone $700 a day, which is what Graeme Johnstone has been doing with Bloom. His part in films and TV productions is that rarest of examples: he helped write the film policy for Clunes, and then Hepburn Shire, so he sees his work come to fruition.

A former naval officer with a long interest in amateur theatre, 72-year-old Graeme has been in seven or eight productions and revels in it. On the Bloom set he renewed his acquaintance with Weaver going back around 50 years, and yarned with the affable Brown, whom he’d met on last year’s remake of the classic Picnic at Hanging Rock.

“I enjoy watching the directors at work,” he says. “In a movie, that camera can pick up a hell of a lot and it’s certainly a much different style of working than in the theatre. In movies, the action must be exact.”

Some of the Russell Crowe film, The True Story of the Kelly Gang, was recently shot in Clunes, although at 54 he’s a bit old to play Ned and instead is cast as the bushranger Harry Power. Other leading actors in this film include Claudia Karvan and Essie Davis, best known as Phryne Fisher in Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries.

This was the second time Clunes has been a set for Ned Kelly. Many external and some internal scenes in the 2003 Heath Ledger version were shot there, with the Old State Bank in the main street, Fraser Street, featuring in the Euroa bank robbery. Graeme was also there for that shoot.

Last year, Fraser Street was caught in the remake of the classic.

The six-part plot of Bloom, being shot for the streaming service Stan, centres on events a year after five locals die in a devastating flood. This is followed by the appearance of a strange plant that can restore youth, but is so powerful that some people will kill to keep it secret.

Clunes was also the backdrop for a yet-to-be-seen HBO production, The Leftovers, and features in the remake of the 1950s classic On the Beach, The Mole, the ABC television series Queen Kat, Carmel & St Jude, Something in the Air and Tomorrow, When the World Began. As well, productions such as Halifax f.p., Love's Brother and The Saddle Club have been filmed around the Highlands.

All this cine action is welcome news for the Hepburn Shire, where economic development officer Rebecca Pedretti says the cash flow from films is significant. For Bloom, more than 100 cast and crew stay, eat and play, as she says, over three days. A stack of bread and bakery items were also bought from the Clunes Bakery to fill the shelves of a “fake” bakery round the corner.

Set-dressing was needed in the Clunes Town Hall for the recent Kelly movie, so this meant work for a plumber and electrician.

“And once a film is screened, people want to go to see where it was made,” says Ms Pedretti.

The Hollywood-meets-the-Highlands push began in about 2000 when the Hepburn Shire started actively pushing to have films made here. Volunteer advocates were found in towns, providing local knowledge and on-the-spot contact.

Familiarisation tours were given to film industry folk and a dedicated website with a location gallery was established. “We worked to become a film-friendly shire,” says Ms Pedretti. “We were one of the first rural councils in the state to do this – and perhaps in Australia.

“It’s an interesting industry and there has been a focus on Australian productions, with Film Victoria and Film New South Wales trying to attract films to their states. We’re just lucky that we have readymade sets.”

As for future filming? “Who knows?,” she says. “We are quite confident in our reputation. If Clunes or any other town in the shire is needed, it’s ready and waiting.”

New responses and training for DNA testing

R

ECENTLY there have been several dog attacks on alpacas, sheep and other livestock that have greatly distressed residents in the region (The Local, Issue 126).

And while property owners have often seen the dogs in question and in some cases managed to identify them, the issue usually lies with forming a convincing case against the animals and owners in question in order for proper action to be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

One possible means suggested for assisting in the identification of problem dogs is the practice of collecting DNA samples at attack sites and matching them with reference samples.

And for those people who have been affected by such devastating events the question is repeatedly asked: why has this technology not been taken up by local councils to help identify problem dogs to stop the death and injuries of their stock?

Enter George Sofronidis, a molecular biologist by training and managing director of Orivet Genetic Pet Care, a leading genetic testing organisation based in Melbourne offering an extensive range of genetic services to breeders, veterinarians and pet owners.

He says while DNA testing at attack sites is an invaluable tool to have for investigations of dog attacks, it is not as simple as one might think and requires councils to develop new responses and training.

“Using DNA to solve dog attacks has always been a challenge and unfortunately TV shows do not help. They tend to make everything look simple and everyone tends to think, ‘just collect it and DNA will solve it’. But the examination sample is always the challenge.

“Can we get enough DNA? Will the DNA be cross-contaminated? Livestock attacks tend to be even more complex. The affected animal is usually left sitting as a carcass and exposed to the environment for many hours. All these factors make trying to get a clean and quality DNA sample a challenge.”

That said, George believes that with proper training and access to an inexpensive DNA sample kit, DNA profiling technology can be an important part of building a Above, molecular biologist George Sofronidis with his pooch Charlie strong case for prosecutions. The kit consists of swabs, saline solution, specimen bags and incident forms and are available free of charge from genetic testing clinics such as Orivet.

ADVERTISEMENT However, as George points out, livestock attacks are different from attacks on humans, cats or other dogs in parks or on suburban streets. Such incidents often happen at night or on weekends when rangers are not working.

This means that it can be many hours or days before a proper response can occur.

After that there is still the matter of collecting reference samples from suspect dogs.

The science is the easy part, it’s proven, has been around for years and is cheap.

But the powers of councils to collect reference samples and the rights of dog owners in these situations are far from clear.

This is why, when asked, current council policy in the Macedon Ranges Shire Council remains one of deterrence.

“In a number of cases where dogs have attacked other animals, officers have discovered after the incident that the dog or dogs have been seen wandering before, but this had not been reported to council,” a council media release states.

“If you see a dog wandering, especially if it is displaying threatening behaviour, please call council immediately to report the dog so we can try to prevent an incident from occurring.”

As for Hepburn Shire Council, while it can collect DNA samples, collection is limited, according to a spokesperson.

“Council investigates all reported dog attacks by collecting evidence, including eye-witness statements, video footage or photos and interviewing owners of the suspected dogs. Council can also collect DNA samples, but we are limited with what can be collected and how.

Kyneton Football Netball celebrates 150yrs

ACK in 1868 when the pretty village of Kyneton was still emerging from the surrounding bush, the Kyneton Football Club was established.

Its first games were chaotic affairs with 72 players on a massive field that stretched from the site of the Kyneton Showgrounds to the Campaspe River over a kilometre away.

From the days of these early matches, the club, one of the oldest in regional Victoria, has remained a pillar of the community, even surviving a temporary recess in 2013 during an acute player shortage.

But 2018 sees it stronger than ever and the Kyneton Football Netball Club now incorporates netball and women’s football. This year the KFNC celebrates 150 years of existence and the appointment of Karen O’Sullivan as club president; the first woman to fill the top job.

Karen is a well-known face to many people in the region and beyond. She has worked in the Melbourne media for 28 years and began a journalism career at Radio 3AW, before joining Channel 10.

Most recently Karen spent 13 years as the 7 Network’s multiple award-winning health reporter. She took the reins of Kyneton Football Netball Club from Rob Waters in late 2017 and agrees this is a very exciting year for the club.

(At the time of press, the seniors were in third position on the ladder in the Bendigo Football Netball League premiership standings, and looking good going into the finals.)

"The team has been building up well over the last four or five years and under the guidance of senior coach Luke Beattie they have developed really well. There is a lot of confidence in the team and we are going do our very best to try and take out a flag this year," Karen said.

Karen is passionate about her club and the fact that it has grown into the largest sporting organisations in Kyneton, with more than 800 members. This includes 400 players made up of young boys and girls playing Kyneton junior football, including Auskickers and 100 men and women choosing to play football or netball for the Kyneton Tigers.

“Yes,” says Karen, “what a great circle of life that is, where you have homegrown stock that came through the junior ranks playing seniors football today. We also have those who went onto AFL such as Nathan Thompson who now has his kids playing here.

"Then there is the women’s football competition, which has been with us for four seasons. They are a great dynamic to have about the club; they are a fun, vivacious group of women who really give the club a different element.”

One might wonder how anyone arrives at being the president of an active sporting club such as the KFNC but not Karen. The shift from an enthusiastic football mum to administrator did not seem like such a big step.

Sport had always been a big part of her life and as she grew up she enjoyed participating in tennis, netball and hockey, and was always fiercely competitive. It was, and remains, a passion shared by Karen and husband Martin who coached many of the current Kyneton senior players when they were just starting out.

Today the family’s involvement continues with their four sons Max, 21, Tommy, 20, Ned, 17 and Jack, 13, who all play football with the club. But while taking on the KFNC presidency has been hectic it is nothing that Karen can’t handle.

“The role is time-consuming, sure, and being the 150th year of the club there have been extra commitments. But you juggle and as women usually does, we juggle well and football administration has become a big part of my life.”

Just sayin’...

Pick me, pick me...

HE Local has just made its five-year anniversary. And I think that is something to be celebrated.

We started back, obviously in September 2013, with lots of high hopes and a really dodgy A4 Word document. But thanks to advertisers, some of whom are still with us today, we got The Local off the ground and have never really looked back.

Our first edition was a monthly and we printed just 500 copies. Clearly there was demand because I remember a woman running past me, puffing, who called out "I can't find a copy..." and on she ran.

We originally thought we would be a monthly publication but it became clear pretty quickly, to keep up with demand, we would have to publish fortnightly. And so we did.

And while it started out a bit as the "Kyle and Donna" show, The Local has grown to include wonderful team members: journalists, sub-editors, graphic designers, photographers, delivery people, accounts people, columnists. We all work autonomously but when we do get together, about four times a year, it really feels like a family gathering.

We feel we are showcasing the best of the region, focusing on good news as much as possible, and featuring the wonderful people who make up the Central Highlands. I have always believed, even more after 30-plus years in the game, if you listen, most people have a story to tell. And there are always surprises. When I asked one woman who was celebrating 60 years of marriage what the secret was, she looked at me, pursed her lips and stated: "You just don't die, dear." Truer words were never spoken.

It has been a real privilege to chat with people, write their stories, take their photos and share them with our readers. Not everyone gets invited into strangers' homes - and mostly leave after a cup of tea and piece of cake! Or some fresh produce to take home.

Thanks also go to our wonderful advertisers. As I said, from the start, they have been amazingly supportive and we pretty much know all of them. Again, it's that being a part of The Local family. We always believed in keeping advertising affordable, so even small businesses can afford to advertise big.

We have also given back. On this page you will see Nina - just one of the many dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs we hope will find a home. And many do. That section is in memory of our own rescue pups, and former columnists, Rosie and Curly. We also offer two free adverts for not-for-profit organisations - because we know funding can be hard to find.

Anyway, it's been a wonderful five years and thank you all for reading, for advertising, for collecting your copy of The Local from our myriad baskets around the region. And we are not resting on our laurels. We have some great plans afoot for a bit of a new look in coming months. It's all about sustainability and keeping print alive. The adverts are for not-for-profit groups and organisations to lend a hand when finances can be a bit tight - or just don't exist. We all know how hard it can be to make volunteer-run organisations work on the smell of an oily rag!

Trentham Aged Care ladies auxiliary president Cath O’Connell said the scarves were all “really beautiful” and would be perfect for the residents. “We’re very appreciative.”

Creswick bike trails

T

HE Creswick Trails Project will see 100 kilometres of trails in and around Creswick.

Recently, Regional Development Victoria, DELWP, Parks Victoria, HVP Plantations, Hepburn Shire Council, Melbourne University and several community members came together to officially commit to work together to deliver the project.

The project has been made possible with a $2.56 million grant from the Victorian Government to help put Creswick on the map for mountain biking and create 30 local jobs.

Hepburn Shire Council Infrastructure general manager Bruce Lucas said that various land managers had worked together closely to finalise the stage 1 trail alignment that allowed the project to move to the tendering stage for construction.

It was also confirmed that construction of the pump-track at Hammon Park would start late this month.

Mr Lucas also congratulated community members who have supported over many years the building of a formalised trail networ, and acknowledged their crucial input to the project's development.

The project aims to build and formalise a trail network across six land tenures in plantation forest and gold field areas, making the project both complex and ambitious, which is why the signing of the document is such an important milestone.

In addition to the land managers involved in the project, RACV Goldfields Resort has pledged its support for the project indicating that mountain biking was included in its future strategic direction and has recently committed to further mountain biking infrastructure at the resort.

I

KNOW it's old news but does anyone care we have a new Prime Minister?

I mean, one minute Turnbull was kissing babies and making promises, a flurry of activity later ScoMo is the new head honcho. It makes my small country brain twirl with overload at the thought of news cycles nowadays.

The other morning I tuned into that twit Karl on the TV, well he may be a twit but he is, for me, the lesser of two evils. I can’t stand Koch’s voice, and while he would certainly win in the brains department should the two breakfast hosts have a “host-off”, it’s the voice, a constant reminder of how good modern day lozenges really are.

Anyway, back to Karl’s breakfast program. His news reporter starts talking about a gunman on the loose in Melbourne and claims that the police are on the trail. She will keep us informed across the day.

Informed? That was the last I heard of it. It’s just too easy to move on to the next piece of celebrity gossip or a bit of free footage someone has sent in from their phone.

Like a nut job losing their stuff, tearing off a rear vision mirror during a road rage incident. Makes for good cheap news, and as they say in the tabloids “if it bleeds it leads”.

There seems to be a recipe for these TV news shows. You start out with a dob of frightening stuff like a terrorist plot or some secret agent, who I have no intention of meeting and care even less about, getting killed by a nerve agent. Then they bring it a little closer to home by sprinkling in a crane falling over, or a car smashing through someone’s wall and the granny who lived there just happens to be out at the time.

Top it off with a gunman or two on the loose and leave to rest. Finally, when you are a nervous wreck hiding underneath the couch, cover with a thin icing of cute animal behaviour like a kitten or a new rhinoceros baby born in a Chinese zoo, probably which will never see the light of day – poor bugger.

Speaking of Chinese and news cycles, what is it with their sinkholes and panda bears? Every morning when I tune in there is another sinkhole and two panda cubs have come into the world. Now I have never been to China, but I imagine when I do, the joint will be crawling with new born panda cubs, that is if they haven’t all tumbled into the sinkholes.

Reading hour soiree

RENTHAM Library will hold a soiree to celebrate Australian Reading Hour on Friday, September 21 starting with supper at 6.30pm, then a local author presentation at 7pm.

Australian Reading Hour is about stopping and picking up a book. It’s an initiative to encourage Australians to rediscover or introduce themselves to the benefits of reading - take the time to learn, grow, escape and relax.

Author Anna Mitchell, despite dire predictions of being chopped up by axe murderers, run over by road trains and eaten by crocodiles, left the confines of her job as an accountant to follow her dreams. She will delight with tales of her travelling adventures from her book, Fat Chick Goes AWOL, and encourage us to undertake our own adventures, because "life is short, and it’s later than you think".

At the end of the evening, attendees will be able to choose two or three books to take home and keep, from the collection the library has been setting aside for the occasion. There will be a variety of fiction and non-fiction to choose from.

People will be able to join the library (which is free) if they wish. The evening is a free event, but bookings are essential. To book, pop into the library, or phone 5424 1326.

New "Smalltalk" playgroups bringing parents and children together for fun

ARENTS with young babies and children can now join welcoming and inviting Supported Playgroups at Daylesford and Creswick.

The new, free, supported playgroup sessions are funded by the Victorian Department of Education and Training.

Smalltalk Supported Playgroups includes themed weeks with a strong focus on promoting children’s development through play.

Mums, dads and carers are also guided through the early challenges involved with parenting and raising children.

Playgroup co-ordinator Cynthia Williams says: “The Supported Playgroup sessions give parents more confidence and opportunities to focus on their children and meet other parents and caregivers in their communities.”

The two-hour weekly sessions are held for 10 weeks during school terms and involve indoor as well as outdoor activities. The mornings also include a snack break, stories and songs with a strong focus on strategies that will prepare children for their school years.

Parents who are eligible to attend may hold a health care card, be referred by a Hepburn Health Maternal and Child Health nurse, be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent or self-register.

21. “The project team is hoping to receive and select 100-200 small art works,” says Kevin Pierce, who will be designing and building a special purpose facility to showcase the works. "small works from a BIG PLACE" will be a travelling feast of miniature artworks from a collective of Central Victorian artists. Curated and presented to a high standard, the exhibition will "pop up" at different destinations along the historical railway line from Melbourne to Bendigo in November and December.

Project director, Sharon Seyd of Jumpleads NFP, said artists would be selected according to curatorial policy, developed via community consultation, with the aim of building a professional arts marketing cooperative.

“This model allows local artists to leverage individual effort into collective group initiatives, sharing resources for exhibition, presentation, marketing, communications and distribution of their work.”

Draft good news

OMBAT Forestcare has welcomed the draft recommendations from the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council’s Central West Investigation.

The recommendations include a new WombatLerderderg National Park, and a new regional park located in two parts.

Wombat Forestcare's Gayle Osborne said this was good news for the Wombat Forest’s many threatened species, such as powerful owls and greater gliders.

"The Wombat Forest is an important refuge for many endangered and vulnerable flora and fauna species including the endemic wombat leafless bossiaea (bossiaea vombata). There are also two extremely important fungi species."

Ms Osborne said the creation of a regional park around Trentham, Blackwood and Daylesford allowed for a range of activities including bushwalking, dog walking and horse riding close to towns.

"Wombat Forestcare members have been particularly concerned that without the protection of a ‘park’ structure, there would be a return of industrial logging in the Wombat Forest. Under this proposal sawlog harvesting would not be permitted, with domestic firewood collection allowed in the new regional park."

PRING has sprung. Well, not exactly. Certainly not where we live. It's been more of a furtive little toe in the water edging towards warmer, hopefully sunny days.

The persistently wet, nigh on freezing weather has really been a double-edged sword - too cold and wet to even contemplate getting out to complete such traditional winter chores as pruning the roses, vines and deciduous fruit trees and preparing the beds for spring-planted vegetables. Don't even mention mowing that field of now wet and waving grass.

The upside to all of this is that the cold weather has slowed down the spring flush of growth so that it is still safe to get that pruning done now. At least now, with the new bursting buds, you can better see which are the best stems and branches to leave on the plant.

I'm not sure that we can really trust the weather yet, so frost-tender evergreens such as your citrus trees should be left until we can be sure the tender young growth tips will be free from frostbite.

Speaking of lawns, with the soil still soft and wet, those broad-leafed and other weeds can be more easily pulled out before they flower and sow seeds.

Another good thing is that you can still safely divide and move shrubs and perennials for some time yet, at least while the weather stays as cold and wet as it is.

It is also a great opportunity to re-pot any of your overgrown container plants or to plant them out into the garden.

It is more than likely that if they have been in the same pot for some time their roots would be "pot bound", entwined into a bird's nest-like mass between the soil and pot. It's not a good idea to just plant it out as is. In most cases the roots will continue to grow in that spiral and eventually strangle the plant to death. The answer is to simply cut the worst of the entanglement away with your secateurs and spread the remaining roots out by hand before placing the plant in to its new home. A watering with one of the seaweed preparations will get it off to a good start.

Despite the appearance of such plants as tomato, capsicum and other frost-tender vegetable seedlings in the chain stores and assurances of interstate gardening programs that it's time to plant them, hold off planting until the real Spring weather comes.

Region's food and wine on show at the Cosmo

I

KNOW people who moved to the Central Highlands purely for The Cosmopolitan Hotel in Trentham.

They loved the atmopshere, the vibe, the food, the hospitality. They left their Melbourne home for one in the Wombat State Forest, not far from Trentham. Six months later, in 2005, The Cosmo, as it is best known, was razed by fire.

Fast forward four years and new owners including Rod Hughes bought the derelict hotel with a vision of returning it to its glory days. Late 2009 saw the opening of The Cosmopolitan Gardens, a quickly popular beer garden/alfresco dining area shaded by century old elms.

A year later the restoration of the historic stables and conversion to a bar and restaurant was completed - with the space booked for 22 weddings last season. Then in December 2012 the owners held a grand opening of the newly rebuilt Cosmopolitan Hotel, followed this year by the opening of the Cosmopolitan Cellar & Store - a fabulous wine store and tasting room featuring the very best of Macedon Ranges and surrounding region's wines.

The eclectically-decorated room, which fronts onto High Street, was pretty much saved from the fire but there are telltale signs of smoke seeping through the bricks at the top of the wall, and the huge mirror is streaked with a smoky black. A four-poster bed, which was in one of the badly damaged rooms, has been repurposed by a local handyman into a stunning marble-topped table.

It's a great space to either enjoy a mulled wine in front of the fire, while the weather is still cool, or as a place to enjoy small gatherings, perhaps a special birthday or a catchup with friends.

We dined at the hotel last Friday, and the dining room was busy with couples, girlfriends and old friends catching up at the end of the week. We were shown to a table by the fire by Rod who then left us in the capable hands of wait staff Jacinta and Peter.

Drinks We ordered drinks first, a Lane's End Cottage Chardonnay ($11) for me, and a Holgate Mt Macedon Pale Ale ($9 schooner) for Kyle. Being a hotel, the drinks list is extensive, with plenty of wine by the glass. Rod also has an ethos of supporting the region in both food and drinks, which is clearly present in both taste and quality.

Starters There are plenty of starters and plates to share and we decided on the Chef's Regional Tasting Plate ($29). It didn't disappoint and, again, the region's food was the hero. Just some I am sure I could taste were Istra smallgoods, RedBeard Bakery's bread, Meredith Dairy's goat's cheese, Barfold Olive's olives, The Fermentary's kraut - and much more. Just a delicious way to start a meal and make you appreciate the region we live in.

Mains There are 10 mains to choose from including four Cosmo Classics such as Panko Crumbed Chicken Parmagiana with handcut chips and salad ($25) or the Wagyu Beef Burger with a brioche bun, bacon, tomato relish, red kraut, pickled cucumbers, dijon, rocket and handcut chips ($26). (For the record, the potatoes are from the Trentham Potato Co. and, for a bit of novelty, panko means baby (ko) bread (pan) in Japanese.

But while they were tempting, Kyle couldn't go past the Braised Beef Cheeks with truffled polenta, broccolini and gremolata ($34). I chose one of my favourites, taken to a new level, Trentham Potato Gnocchi, roasted pumpkin, caramelised red onion, toasted almonds, Tuscan kale and goat's cheese ($31).

We were both in heaven. Kyle literally inhaled his beef cheeks, barely needing cutlery, with the polenta beautifully flavoured by the truffle and a perfect jus surrounding the dish.

My gnocchi, which manager Fiona Miovich informed me were made that morning by their Italian chef (is there a better gnocchi than that?) was awesome. Pillows of potato, soft and light, surrounded by a medley of flavours and textures from the vegetables, almonds and cheese. Rod said it is one of the most popular meals - and no wonder.

Desserts We were done but there are five really interesting sounding desserts on offer. Chai spiced creme brulee, biscotti, date, sesame and walnut truffles ($14) will be my pick next time. Oh, there are also three cheeses to choose from, or have all three ($26), which was exactly what the table on our right had chosen to finish with coffees.

Something else There are also daily wood-fired pizza specials available and locals' night is Wednesdays with all Cosmo Classics just $18 and kids' meals $9. See you there!

From death’s door to a Cheerleader

S

ITTING in his Hepburn Springs lounge room that evening, Mark Bishop felt something like a chill run through him. Six months earlier he had come down with Ross River fever when it swept Melbourne: now he thought this was a re-occurrence, or perhaps a cold or 'flu.

Then he was gasping for air. “I’m not sure what I need to do,” he told his wife Leanne. It was between eight and nine at night. By 9.30 next morning he was at the Daylesford Hospital.

It was August 27. He would not leave the hospital until 23 September.

Over the following month, medical experts found he was under attack from a mysterious airborne superbug, one of only six of its type known worldwide. It was devouring his heart and its vital mitral valve.

It was the sort of superbug that each year, says a recent book from Harvard University, kills an estimated 1.5 million people worldwide, more than road accidents (1.2 million) and about the same as diabetes.

Mark puts his survival down to remarkable medical care and his fitness. As he slowly recovers from his and Leanne’s lives being totally upended and diminished, he is putting energy into Hepburn Community Regional Cheer, formerly Daylesford and District Christmas Cheer, which is why he agreed to tell his story.

Mark may have lived here for almost 13 years but his roots run deep: he is descended from William King, who ran the first provedore in Daylesford, at the corner of Camp and Howe streets, now the site of the Central Springs Inn. Howe Street is named for the woman who became Mrs King. In that sense, he is “old” Daylesford, while inevitably being labelled new by those who use such a measure.

His Ross River fever in February 2017 left him worn out and with joint pain. “It’s still in my system,” he says. The August superbug brought a sleepless Saturday night.

By 9.30 the next morning, he was in front of Dr Greg Stewart at the Daylesford Hospital. “I credit him with saving Mark’s life,” says Leanne.

It seemed at first that Mark had pneumonia but Dr Stewart was not prepared to let it rest at that and took three large vials of blood, later to prove invaluable. He wrapped the vials in foil, gave Mark antibiotics and sent him to Ballarat Base Hospital by ambulance, then into quarantine for the next four days.

“The staff at Ballarat were fantastic,” Mark says. “There were four or five doctors, including a cardiologist.”

First at Ballarat Base and then at the Alfred, medical detectives got to work, including researching infectious diseases globally as Mark continued struggling to breathe and a heart murmur was found. A female doctor wondered whether all Mark’s symptoms might be connected.

A camera was sent down his throat as he struggled on, unable to lie down.

A week later he was in the Alfred Hospital, where blood was found in his lungs.

His heart was racing, his blood pressure grim.

“This is something that’s airborne,” one specialist said. “It’s got into your system and may be a superbug.”

An angiogram in Ballarat had picked up the need for open-heart surgery to possibly repair his mitral valve, one of four to the heart. The bug was in his blood and eating his heart while destroying the valve. The bug had to be destroyed. Or else.

In went an antibiotic drip.

Early in the morning of September 14, he was prepared for surgery, only to be bumped because transplants were needed (the Alfred is Victoria’s only hospital performing heart and lung transplants).

To guard against infection, Mark had to have three teeth removed. “They ripped them out and stitched me up.” And more “grams”(echocardiogram and electrocardiogram, for the medically-minded) while his progress was watched by students.

The surgery took six hours. Mark was certain he was in a Mexican restaurant, putting that down to the bright lights.

He shows a scar bisecting his chest. Two dots below signal where he was opened for draining. His heart muscle was damaged. A mechanical titanium valve was installed, rather than a tissue valve from a pig or cow because an animal would need replacing in 10 or 12 years and Mark is 64. The valve, he says, ticks like a clock.

Off he went into ICU for nine days for countless blood transfusions and platelets.

As he healed he was allowed out for two hours tops, once to see his 21-year-old son Cam play for Old Xavierians in a losing grand final.

At home, rehab began. For the first time since he was 13, he stopped smoking, the day he entered hospital.

He had also ended a successful career as an industry learning and development programs manager for Swinburne University in May last year, going from consultancy rates to zero. Leanne continued her human resources consulting job until December.

Now they look after their two holiday rental places. “I still have trouble breathing,” says Mark. “I did have the 'flu, even though I had the shots.

“I am recalibrating my life while being mentored by the wonderful Dr Albert Ip. I can’t do what I used to do and under Dr Ip I’ve changed my whole way of thinking and approach to life.”

Mark and Leanne plunged into the Cheer scheme, where he’s treasurer and Leanne succeeded the “wonderful” Jan Pengilley as president.

“I’m not `special',” Mark insists. “It’s all about the community…I used to be on committees for cricket and football when Cam was playing, and now we’ve got eight volunteer committee members representing community organisations, working tirelessly for people who may have had hard times.”

Last year $27,500 was raised, food and fuel vouchers distributed, and $15,000 worth of toys. “Many families just could not put food on the table at Christmas or do something special. The demand is greater than the supply, and it’s growing. We’re looking at possibly doing something for young people and for those fleeing domestic violence.”

Mark says an average of three people in the district become homeless each week.

“And, like so many others, I’m trying to help other community members.”

Local voices - Fae

The Local loves to hear your stories about why you love the Central Highlands, what's happening near you and the latest news from your neighbourhood. This edition Fae Wilson writes for Local Voices about her family and Daylesford - and the chance to stay in the region she loves.

"Some 14 years ago I gave up my career as a freelance fashion stylist/producer after 22 years and moved to Daylesford from Melbourne to help my son and daughter-inlaw and my then three-year-old grandson, who is almost 18 now. My daughter-in-law passed away 12 years ago this year.

I loved my time helping my son with my grandson through primary school and secondary school. This year he is a first-year apprentice carpenter, under the guidance of his talented father; they are working on the State Library's refurbishment.

I have reinvented myself a few times since moving here. Firstly I did some accommodation caring, then almost eight years as Visitor Services co-ordinator for the Hepburn Shire looking after 80 volunteers. I also created Tootsies, a mobile pedicure service, and a babysitting service called Babysitting by Nannas.

I love the community here in Daylesford who are very supportive and I have made many friends. I am currently on the committee of U3A and enjoy that immensely.

My other love is my little companion toy poodle Miss Lolita, commonly known as Lollie, who my eldest son bought me almost eight years ago. I have three beautiful grown sons including twins and four beautiful grandchildren whom I cherish.

Some time ago I moved from Coomoora to Ivanhoe to continue to live with my eldest son and grandson due to their work commitments. I didn't want to leave our region but had no alternative option.

After exhausting all avenues of accommodation options, due to high rentals in our region, and after a couple of previous months even looking into moving to Ballarat, I was emotionally spent and decided to leave my beloved community of Daylesford.

While packing our home up I had decided to pack all my things separately, as previously when I moved in with the boys, I had melded mine with theirs, but knew it was time to start the next part of my journey alone. My son had met a wonderful lady and my grandson was almost grown up. I wanted desperately to find my own space again.

Having seen my grandson through primary school and secondary school and after bringing up four boys largely on my own, now all grown successful men, I so wanted to have time just for me. I'll always be mum and nanna but it's Fae's turn.

Through a stroke of luck, I had my name down on a waiting list for eight years with some church housing but had not been able to take previous offers. The day before I moved our household to Melbourne I got the call that they had a unit for me here in Daylesford.

I recently returned to my forever home in the place and community that I love."

Typewriters in cafes

YPING is a modern skill, needed by everyone to survive in this day and age. But typing on a typewriter, and one without electricity to boot, is a skill which has mostly gone by the wayside.

However as part of Words in Winter, the typewriter was given another chance, for a Chance and Change theme, with people given just 500 words to voice their stories. The winner this year was Drusilla Dickenson-Bray. This is her story.
