The Local's motto is to "connect the community" by bringing people closer with great features on amazing local people and ensuring you know what is happening around your community whether that's a festival, a fete or maybe just a great special from one of our fantastic advertisers. Content is key.

We love writing about local people doing inspiring things and even local people doing ordinary things. And as some people, mostly politicians, have found out, if you are not local you will not appear in the pages of The Local.

You will find The Local, and all the back copies, online at www.tlnews.com.au and we deliver bulk drops throughout the region along with smaller "cafe" packs to every cafe, hotel, bar and restaurant we can find. We've even heard of The Local turning up in places like a cafe in St Kilda and a bar in Bali! All up we have a print and online readership of about 14,000.

The Local's advertising rates have always been kept affordable so even small advertisers can advertise big. Colour is free, the sizes are an eighth, quarter, banner, half and full page and we can help with making up branding and graphics. The world is confusing enough, so we like to keep things simple.

Honouring Roz

From Neighbourhood Watch to collecting for the Red Cross, and even doing remedial reading with kids, Roz was always involved and often raising funds.

Newstead open studios

HRISANNE Blennerhassett grew up in Eltham, a fiercely artistic community, among the inspiration of many local creatives. Her mother is a potter and watercolour artist and continues to practise in her 80s. Chrisanne, who is taking part in the Newstead Open Studios, spoke to Donna Kelly.

Donna: When did you get involved in art?

Chrisanne: Art and creating has always been an essential aspect of my daily existence.

Donna: What is your medium?

Chrisanne: I was a late contender for university, finishing my visual arts degree just a few years ago in my 50s. I majored in printmaking and continue to work with this medium for numerous reasons. I get great satisfaction from the drawn line and many print processes are extremely sympathetic to the reproduction of line. I find it an extremely romantic notion to be using classical print processes today, almost identical to what Albrecht Durer was using in the 1600s. Traditional processes alongside the contemporary draws interesting and sharp contrast.

Donna: What do you hope your work says to others?

Chrisanne: We bring our own baggage to the reading of an artwork and there is an intimate and personal engagement that exists within this space. The viewer is always free to make their own interpretation and draw individual conclusions but I would hope to inspire others to connect with the wild and striking natural environs that surround us here in Central Victoria.

Donna: What does your work mean to you?

Chrisanne: Using nature and the health of the planet as inspiration for my work gives me the sense that I am doing something in the face of environmental crisis.

There is a darker edge to my work, printing natural specimens in black ink evokes burnt and charred dystopian landscapes, negative spaces allude to the notion of disappearance/extinction and the use of the human form suggests that by harming the environment we are harming ourselves.

Donna: Is there a strong art scene in the Central Highlands?

Chrisanne: This would be an understatement, Newstead and surrounds are highly proactive in the creative arts, of all disciplines, it is brimming with the artistic and I feel blessed that I have moved (just over a year ago) to such a talented and diverse community.

Donna: Where can we see your work?

Chrisanne: Newstead Open Studios runs in conjunction with the Castlemaine State Festival, there are 18 contributing artists working in 13 local studios. There are three studios open in my Green Gully street - Chris Johnston ceramics along with visual artist George Duckett, Diane Thompson sculpture with her partner, painter Ken Killeen, and I am sharing my print studio with the very talented visual artist/ ceramicist, Frances Guerin. The community hall in Newstead has an extraordinary exhibition called "Eat my Art" that reflects beautifully the practice of this rich and diverse community.

Life of conflicts, dream of peace

ARY Charnock studies the easy cruising of an eagle, his eyes missing little. Once these eyes were focused on the enemy in one of the dirtiest conflicts of our time.

Looking across his little block from his caravan in Newlyn, he tells of the savagery of an urban war, one that left him damaged, and of his crusade to help Vietnam war veterans damaged in other ways.

“To live by a pile of stones” is the translation of the name of his family, who date back to 1066 in Lancashire, England. The stones marked a border and it was not far from the bitter border of Britain and Ireland that he was blown up.

At the age of eight he accompanied his parents from Liverpool to the then Rhodesia. His sisters, a niece and brother-in-law went too.

That was in the 1970s. By 1980 Zimbabwe had its independence and the Charnocks returned home.

From the time he was 17 Gary wanted to join the army. Because he chose the infantry, he was denied permission by his father, who said Gary needed to learn a trade. So he worked as a butcher until he was old enough to join.

There followed 14 years in Northern Ireland and three years in Bosnia, Kosovo, the Iraq-Jordan border and Cyprus.

In Ireland he was trained by the SAS to spend up to three weeks hiding out, sometimes under bushes, observing and reporting on the IRA. So he would be out lying in the snow or the mud, watching leaders like Gerry Adams and once even noting a house where 15 leaders met.

“Do nothing,” Gary and his men were told. “Watch and observe.” Leaders such as Adams were not taken in because they were too valuable in restraining the most violent of their followers.

Even so, there was violence enough. Gary and a companion were in an unmarked vehicle which had been in one area too long and had been spotted by the IRA. As the pair drove into the countryside, a bomb that had been stuck to the vehicle by a passer-by was remotely detonated.

"We went end-over-end, through two telegraph poles, finishing upside down."

For six hours they hung there, occasionally shooting at groups of men who tried to approach. "Basically, I broke my neck and had a brain injury. I was the lucky one, at least I could get up and walk. My offsider is in a wheelchair."

In hospital the two were under around-the-clock guard. There was a bounty of 20,000 pounds on each of their heads (a foot soldier was 3000-5000 pounds). In spite of the hospital protection, two IRA men told Gary’s mate’s parents in a corridor that they would kill their son, so the two soldiers were airlifted to Belfast.

Gary’s army career included seizing two tonnes of manure, which would have exploded at a certain temperature while laden with nails. His troops lost five men to a 1000-pound bomb driven to a checkpoint in a van. The driver had been chained to the steering wheel after the IRA threatened to kill his wife and children.

Reconnaissance on the Iraq-Jordan border would have been some relief after this.

Except that his unit stumbled on 30,000 Iraqi troops ready to invade Jordan to secure an outlet for Saddam Hussein’s oil. “We moved back 50 kilometres and watched.”

Discharged on medical grounds in 2003 (“My hips went, my back’s screwed from injuries”) he refused a life pension, returning to butchery, then security work before moving to Alice Springs, Ballarat and Creswick. (“I get itchy feet.”).

In Newlyn he runs a fresh produce shop, also publishing a children’s story from drawings he sent his two sons while on service over a period of 30 years. The book, Sniffer the Hedgehog and Flutter Butterfly, is helping raise money for his dream, a farm where Vietnam veterans can go to recover.

“Australia,” he says, “has lost more troops to suicide than in Iraq and Afghanistan, and it’s the same in the US and the UK.” He has paid for a business plan and is clear-eyed about his aim to raise $2 million for a farm where veterans can live in cabins, while raising stock and growing their food. He wants them to stop thinking about suicide.

Next, he plans a 1000km walk from Ballarat to Canberra and return to raise money for the farm. Even with his injuries, he says he’ll make it. “We were always told that pain is only a sensation, you can overcome it.”

Biodiversity talk

AVID Millsom will present the next You, Me & Biodiversity workshop at the Trentham Neighbourhood Centre on Saturday, April 27 from 1.30pm to 3pm.

Mr Millsom is widely regarded as one of the most experienced and successful revegetation practitioners in Australia.

He is now retired and is keen to pass his knowledge on to community members who want to improve their outcomes from revegetation.

Margot Fonteyn

A

USTRALIAN Decorative and Fine Arts Society Central Victoria will be host to one of Australia’s most famous ballet dancers, Robin Haig, as she presents her lecture Backstage with Margot Fonteyn at the Kyneton Town Hall on Thursday, April 11.

Dame Margot Fonteyn was a world famous ballerina who led the Royal Ballet from the age of 16 until her retirement at 60.

Robin was awarded a Royal Academy of Dancing Scholarship at the age of seventeen and travelled to London in 1956 to study at the Royal Ballet School, entering the company at Covent Garden 16 months later.

Robin came to know Dame Margot both as a dancer and as a person during her tour of Australia in 1962. Several months later Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev formed their extraordinary dance partnership, each bringing something of enormous value to the other.

Robin has worked internationally as a dancer, choreographer and teacher including the role of director of the West Australian Ballet.

Margret helping strengthen the community

LENLYON resident of 25 years, Margret Lockwood has been inducted onto the Hepburn Shire Council’s Heather Mutimer International Women’s Day Honour Roll – and her acceptance of the honour is as humble as her dedication.

“There were four other women inducted as well,” Margret points out straight away. And as deserving of her accolade as she is, Margret is also determined to point out that she is in good company.

“It’s important for everyone to be aware that when I was initially asked would I accept the nomination, my response was, well, there are many, many women in the community who work extremely hard and are not acknowledged. And the argument that came back to me was that if I accept the nomination then they’ve got someone from Glenlyon, and that’s setting a precedent and they’ll do it again.

“I know women who have put in 50 years volunteering and just because I happen to be recognised it doesn’t mean there aren’t other very worthy women out in the community – it’s the nature of women, they are interested in caring for others, they certainly don’t do it for their own glory.”

Since retiring from her job as a teacher at Daylesford Secondary College, Margret has been the kind of active community member that inspires others to want to do more. “It takes a considerable amount of time, but I think it’s worth doing,” Margret explains. “I think it’s important that we look after and serve our local community, and that’s why Landcare and the CFA are so important in rural areas, we stick together.

“It’s really important to have a sense of belonging in your community, and one way is by serving the community, and the rewards of volunteering are usually greater than the cost in the sense that you put in time, you put in personal effort and it’s worth it. You’re strengthening your community, you’re belonging to your community, and it’s a great opportunity for social contact.”

She is a member of the Glenlyon Progress Association and has held a number of executive positions. She has also been involved with the Upper Loddon Landcare Group, doing bio-work along the river for more than a decade.

A significant amount of Margret’s volunteering time is also dedicated to the Glenlyon Fire Brigade – she is a firefighter, as well as treasurer of the brigade and she is also the Glenlyon Group training officer, responsible for organising training for members across the eight brigades that make up the group.

“I was a teacher for 30 years, and having taught English and coordinating Student Welfare - a really interesting role but an incredibly time-consuming role, I was fortunate to pick up skills that I have been able to use now.”

Margret is also putting those organising skills to use by helping with the local community dinners, which are held once a month.

“It’s all about the social cohesion, as well as fundraising - initially for the Glenlyon Hall but also other local projects. Afterwards, we have people staying around to chat, it’s a really important social contact.”

For young women, Margret has an insightful piece of advice when it comes to their futures in volunteering.

“With volunteering, you do what you can when you can, so while I was teaching I simply didn’t have the time to participate and some people are too busy to contribute. But there will be other occasions when they can and we need to be grateful for whatever people can give.”

“It’s really important to have a sense of belonging in your community, and one way is by serving the community, and the rewards of volunteering are usually greater than the cost.”

Magical experience at Daylesford Primary

"

CLOSE your eyes and listen." The moving sounds of voice and beat, then the Yidaki (didgeridoo in English) created a magical atmosphere and a wonderful start to Cultural Day at Daylesford Primary School last Tuesday, March 19.

The core cultural experiences of the day were created by Will Austin and Alex Splitt, who conducted workshops for students from Daylesford, Yandoit and Drummond primary schools.

Will and Alex are from Yarn Bark, an Aboriginal-led organisation providing experiences for people to reconnect or connect "with the very essence and heartbeat of the First Nations People, culture and community through stories, narrative meditation and physical movement".

The teachers complemented the learning with stimulating activities about the First Nations using literature, art, games and music. The activities explored traditional as well as modern indigenous cultural aspects such as sustainability and connection to the land.

Cultural Day at Daylesford Primary is seen not only as a recognition and celebration of our diversity - in this case, the importance of learning as much as we can about our First Nations, but also the impetus for ongoing connections.

Suzanne Hobson, Performing Arts specialist, says: "We have several projects underway focusing on indigenous culture, including the creation of an indigenous garden and a mural. It was great to have Yarn Bark present such immersive, impactful experiences, and we're looking at ways we can keep this connection going and also expanding our understanding of First Nations, particularly our local indigenous community."

Artists open studios

WO exciting new initiatives have been introduced to the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Open Studios program, bringing more diversity and inclusion to the April event.

During DMROS, the professional artists of the Hepburn and Macedon Ranges shires open their studios each year to the public free of charge. They provide insight and opportunities for visitors to see "behind-the-scenes" operations in the artists' studio environments, as well as having conversations with the artists.

This year, Hepburn Shire Council has funded the concept for an indigenous artist-in-residence. Yorta Yorta artist, Janet Bromley, will be hosted and exhibited by the Old Auction House Gallery in Kyneton. She will be showing her heritage and modern influenced art work.

Janet explores the themes of displacement, past life experiences, vulnerable people and the management of waste materials. Working with recycled clothing, plastic, found objects and natural elements from the bush, she explores her cultural heritage such as basket making and weaving. Janet will be available for conversations and working at the Old Auction House Gallery on Saturdays and Sundays of the Open Studios and will also be exhibiting at the Clunes Warehouse Gallery from April 1-8.

Meanwhile, Regional Arts Victoria has funded the other collaborative project which is mentoring final year visual art students from Federation and Latrobe universities. Three DMROS artists, Dianne Longley, Basil Eliades and Anthony Vanderzweep will each mentor a student.

The DMROS event acts as a springboard for visitors to enjoy the region’s restaurants, wineries, accommodation and wellness centres and the countryside's natural beauty.

There will be an exhibition at Daylesford's Convent Gallery which opens on April 12 and runs until April 21. Each artist in the program contributes an artwork to the show, with the public able to view the art works and decide which artists/studios to visit. There is a map showing where the artists are situated in the two shires and corresponds to the artwork in the gallery. The Convent Gallery is open from 10am to 4pm during the event. It will be closed Easter Monday April 22.

The studios are open from 10am to 5pm on April 13, 14, 20, 21 and 22.

Inspirational people: Mason Coles It’s 11.45am on a Tuesday and we are immersed in Qigong. Towards the end of the set we move to the form “sage strokes his beard” and the small group of us smile at our bearded friend Mason.

Mason joined the gym as part of the Spring in your Step (SIS) program a couple of years ago and is the focus of this month’s inspirational people article.

In early 2017 Mason was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. “When the specialist told me the diagnosis it was as though he handed me a grenade without a pin and said catch this,” Mason says.

As he began to emotionally connect to the telling of his story, tears welled in his eyes.

“That’s how I felt,” he said, “It was like, Mason, you have Parkinson’s. It was a straight-out hit on the nose." Cop that, he thought. Images of Muhammad Ali flashed through his mind. Horrified at the thought of ending up like him, the shock set in.

To seek clarity, Mason went to his own doctor at Springs Medical and an important exchange was to occur that would set Mason on a new path.

Upon hearing Mason’s news, his doctor, full of compassion for his plight said “I’m here to put the pin back in the grenade, Mason”. Not only did his doctor touch into and meet Mason’s fear, for the first time since his diagnosis, Mason had felt he had the support he needed to face his illness.

Soon Mason joined the SIS program and changed his diet to help manage his symptoms. With no cure for Parkinson’s in sight and with researching his condition leaving him to feel like “a dog chasing its tail”, Mason has decided to try experimental treatment.

I asked Mason, how does he keep himself going, knowing there is no cure for his condition? His words of advice were as follows:

Never give up; The support of family (especially his partner and daughter) and friends is priceless; and Never get caught up in your own emotions, there’s always somebody worse off than you.

Mason says he has been able to move out of the shock of his initial diagnosis.

He now has a positive state of mind and can laugh at times about his situation. He cannot thank his community enough for the support they have given him and is very grateful to his doctor for his care.

I asked Mason if he thought his doctor had put “the pin back in the grenade” and with a teary smile he said, “He sure did, Sam!”.

I cannot imagine how I would feel if I’d been diagnosed with an incurable disease.

But with people like Mason in the world showing that it is possible to thrive in the face of such adversity, how can we not be inspired?

Hepburn House just like a second home

OR Peggy Warren, making the move to Hepburn House was like moving into a second home.

Peggy had previously stayed at Hepburn House regularly as a respite resident and last month was happy to make the permanent move.

Design with Indre Kisonas Facing a bleak autumn

NCIENT Greek philosophers, especially Aristotle, believed there are three ingredients to beauty: symmetry, proportion and harmony.

Beauty was an object of love and something to be imitated and reproduced in their lives, architecture, education and politics.

In 1202, Leonardo Fibonacci introduced the Fibonacci sequence to the Western world. 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89 etc, where each number is the sum of the two preceding ones.

Fibonacci’s numbers are strongly related to the Golden Ratio (Golden Mean, Golden Section, Divine Proportion). The Golden Ratio for length to width of a rectangle is 1.6180 and is considered most pleasing to the eye. The numerical value is called ‘phi’, named for the Greek sculptor Phidias.

The Parthenon in Athens, Greece had Phidias using the Golden Ratio for its exterior rectangular shape, interior divisions and the spacings between columns.

The Great Pyramids of Giza at 4600 years old and much older than Athens employed the Golden Rectangle which is based on the Golden Ratio. The Golden Ratio has been a fascination from Pythagoras, Euclid in Ancient Greece, through to medieval mathematics and Renaissance. During 1550 to 1770 deviations from illuminated manuscript book proportions 2:3, 1: square root of 3 and Golden section were rare. Variations were within half a millimetre.

Application of Fibonacci numbers in modern times include computer algorithms, the Fibonacci heap data structure, graphs called Fibonacci cubes for interconnecting parallel and distributed systems.

In design, the Golden Ratio is commonly used in everyday objects e.g. shapes of postcards, playing cards, wide screen televisions, photographs, light switch plates and cars. Designer Le Corbusier and artist Salvador Dali have proportioned their works to approximate the Golden Ratio. It is said the Mona Lisa is also perfectly proportioned to the Golden Ratio.

In nature Fibonacci numbers appear as the branching of trees, the arrangement of leaves on a stem, veins in a leaf or the branching of veins and nerves in animals.

See it in the fruit sprouts of a pineapple, the flowering of an artichoke, an uncurling fern frond or the arrangement of pine cone bracts. The proportions of chemical compounds and the geometry of crystals use this ratio.

In music, look to Debussy’s Reflections in Water as an example. Poetry and grammar contain the Golden Ratio in word sequences and sentences. The poetry is non-rhyming but uses Fibonacci numbers in the line count.

The Golden Ratio is viewed as a universal law, the principle of formation striving for beauty in all structures whether the realms are natural or man-made. All forms of art, design, acoustic or optical, will find its fullest realisation in the Golden Ratio. It is balance and harmony and when employed you will know it because it just feels right.

With the weather boffins now predicting a 70 per cent chance of El Nino calling on us this winter, it's even more important than usual to prepare our gardens now, while the weather still encourages us out of doors.

Despite the expected dry weather ahead, winter weeds will still spread and take over if they're not cut short in their prime and there's no point allowing them to deprive your shrubs and garden beds, especially winter vegetables, of what little rain we may receive.

Act now and remove any weeds before they have a chance to flower and form seeds.

Use a Dutch or single hoe to remove them and at the same time cultivate around your shrubs and flower beds and between your rows of vegetables. As well as ridding the garden of the weeds it will also open the surface of the soil to entrap and allow in whatever rainfall we receive.

Once the weather cools and the danger of fires has abated, give your beds a good, deep soaking - in the absence of a good rainfall - and spread a heavy layer of organic mulch over the beds and under shrubs and trees, making sure to leave a gap around the base of all stems/trunks to avoid collar rot and insect damage.

You can use any organic matter including well-rotted compost, pea (or other) straw, hay, leaves or bark chips as long as you remember that in order to break down and eventually provide nitrogen, all of these materials will rob nitrogen from the surrounding soil in the process. Sulphate of ammonia or similar will do admirably, but, whatever you choose, be sure to water it in well to help it dissolve and spread throughout the mulch.

Be generous with the mulch, spreading a layer at least two to three centimetres thick. By the time next summer comes around it should all be ready to work in and enrich the top soil. This is an excellent time to try striking cuttings of your favourite shrubs and woody perennials.

Some of the hardier varieties can simply be put into a sand-filled hole in a sheltered part of the garden but the more difficult ones will need to be placed into pots or boxes of coarse sand or a mixture of equal parts of sand and peatmoss.

Evergreen cuttings will be more successful if the container is placed in a glass house or under a sheltered laser-roofed porch. Several of the hardware chains advertise collapsible clear plastic mini-glass houses and in previous articles I have described the use of upturned clear plastic containers to cover the pots in the manner of the old glass cloches (bell jars).

I recently saw an innovative item on turning a large, lidded, clear plastic storage container into a miniature glass house. To allow for air circulation a cluster of small holes had been drilled into each corner of the lid. Access to and watering of the pots is simply achieved by removing the lid. The milky plastic allows for plenty of light and warmth without any danger of sunburnt shoots on a warm day, especially if it's placed in a well-lit sheltered porch or verandah. I certainly intend giving one a go with my next round of cuttings.

Oh! By the way - among the batch of cuttings I described in my spring article on growing cuttings under glass were two small growths I removed from the base of my small Wollemi pine. I'm pleased to report that, to my extreme surprise and delight, I now have two tiny new Wollemi pinelets. But more about that next time.

Awesome autumn menu at Farmers Arms

HE Farmers Arms Hotel in Daylesford has released its autumn menu - and it's awesome.

Head chef Chris Timmins has created something special here with plenty of nods to the wonderful local produce this region offers, whether it's mushrooms from the Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre's farm or Harcourt Apple cider.

We headed there last week, eager to give the new menu a try. But don't worry, Chris has kept all the classics as well! We were welcomed by Chris, and Megan, who has been a staffer at the Farmers for many years, and is a favourite of the punters, especially leading the Friday night meat raffle.

Chris took charge and offered us three starters, three mains and three desserts to taste. They are nothing if not generous at this iconic Daylesford pub.

First up was the South Australian crispy whitebait served with garlic aioli & lemon ($17), the Semi dried tomato, feta & spinach croquette with pesto mayonnaise ($15) and the Dill cured salmon gravlax, horseradish cream, rocket, red onion & caperberries ($18).

I have never had whitebait before but it was a really big serve and fishy, crispy and all so moreish, dipped in that aioli. Really worth a try. The croquettes were also delicious with loads of gentle flavours coming together for the perfect mouthful. And who doesn't love gravlax? Again a big serve, with plenty of huge slices of salmon and loads of topping. I love caperberries so I was in food heaven.

For mains, we had the Herb crusted blue eye fillet served with garlic confit potatoes, red cabbage & beans ($34), Mushroom tikka masala served with basmati rice, coconut yoghurt & cucumber mint salad ($23) and the hotel's "Local Hero", Locally grown (Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre) oyster mushrooms, oven baked & served with grilled polenta, roasted heirloom tomatoes, spinach & a parmesan crisp ($24).

Last one first and that Hero Dish was fantastic. The mushrooms were slippery and tasty and just fantastic. The tomatoes and spinach were perfect and the polenta cakes were chargrilled and looked as good as they tasted.

And then there's that parmesan crisp - just yum. This is a great dish, locally produced and so affordable. A must.

Kyle loved his blue eye which he said had a "straight off the hook" flavour, and he should know, being a former commercial fisherman. The accompanying vegies were perfect, and yet again, a generous serve.

Finally, we both tried the tikka masala which had a really genuine flavour with plenty of herbs and spices but without the overpowering heat you sometimes find in Australian restaurants. I really loved the salad.

We were starting to fade but Chris had more up his chef's sleeve. A trio of desserts which all looked absolutely fantastic. Think Double Choc chip pan cookie with vanilla ice cream, Harcourt Apple Cider poached pear with waffle, white chocolate ice cream & toffee sauce and Blackberry tapioca pudding with almond & coconut crumb (all $16).

OMG! All three were incredible but my hands down favourite was the cookie. It was decadent, creamy, chocolately...everything you want to finish up a wonderful meal. Kyle loved the pear and we both had a final scoop each of the tapioca pudding - if only mum had used tapioca for this sort of goodness when I was growing up!

Jump in now, no reservations needed because they will always find you a table, and indulge in some awesome autumn fare at the Farmers Arms. You won't be disappointed.

Clunes community gathers in support

LUNES residents gathered recently to support all affected by the attempted burglary of the Bendigo Bank ATM from the Clunes Newsagent in Fraser Street.

About 500 people took part in the March 17 event, arriving with fold-up chairs and picnic baskets, with a few donning green and orange for St Patrick's Day. The gathering billed as a "Picnic on Fraser" included entertainment from four bands, two from Wesley College's Clunes campus, activities for children and a free barbeque which dispensed 700 sausages courtesy of Longview Farm and Meats, and vegie burgers.

Brightly coloured wire sculptures by Clunes artist Tom Ripon were installed on the emergency fencing outside the damaged newsagency.

The event was opened by Steven Hunter, president of the Clunes Tourism and Development Association who reflected on the importance of bringing the Clunes community together to recoup after the damage done to their town's historic streetscape and support newsagency owners, Cynthia and Craig Drewer.

In acknowledgement of the Christchurch tragedy, Mr Hunter lead a minute's silence before the entertainment began.

Retired farming couple Rod and Joy Mason reflected what many at the picnic felt.

"It's so sad for all the people involved, it's done harm," Rod said. "We been here for 20 years. (But) seeing everyone here, jovial, happy, it's a really good thing."

Cynthia and Craig were swamped by locals wanting to reassure and support them.

"We're overwhelmed," Cynthia said. "We've had so many people come up and hug us, tell us they're right behind us. It's just amazing."

"Picnic on Fraser" was supported by QBE Insurance Group Ltd, Bendigo Bank, the Clunes Tourism and Development Association and Hepburn Shire.

Pick me, pick me...

ARCH is melanoma awareness month. It seems a strange combination.

I know both start with "m" but you would think that a summer month would be more appropriate. But part of the event is taking part in marches around the country, so I guess that's the connection.

Having a fair complexion and growing up in the seventies when baby oil was the sunscreen of choice means I have had a few spots removed here and there. The first was when I was 16. It was on the back of my calf and the doctor didn't wait quite long enough for the anaesthetic to kick in. So from my lying position I accidentally kicked back. Pretty hard. I changed doctors not long after. I felt the patient/doctor relationship had been fractured, much like his jaw.

But it does mean I am pretty good about skin checks, and all those other screenings which are readily available. And why wouldn't you be? I am all for pap smears, colonoscopies, skin checks, eye tests, mammograms, blood tests... at least I know I have done my part. Hmm. Well, I could cut back on the chardy but a girl's got to have one vice.

Recently I had a bit of what is commonly known as a "health scare". I don't need to go into details but it was one of those things when you think to yourself "that doesn't feel quite right" but then you forget about it for a bit. Or it seems a bit silly.

But then you remember when your leg was quite sore and you wondered aloud to your husband, after Googling, if you had deep vein thrombosis. And your husband said "you're such a worrier" and then you mentioned it to your mum and she said "you're such a hypochondriac" but then you went to the doctor anyway and the next thing you were on warfarin. Okay, maybe that's just me.

So, I went to the doctor and they said "we'd better check it out". So we did and I ended up getting a biopsy and all was well. And even though being a journo I see the headlines well ahead of any disaster, in the back of my mind was the thought that because I had all those checks done it probably would not be too disastrous. And that was true, because my health scare, if it had turned out to be something, would have been in the early stages so it would have been quite fixable. Not fun, but fixable.

I guess this column is my way of saying "get those screenings done" and, if you think something is not quite right, within reason, get it checked out. The best you will get is the all clear and often the worst is "let's get this sorted".

Disclaimer. I do also have friends who have done all the right things and live healthy lives but are dealing with issues that won't go away. After all, this life isn't foolproof and none of us are getting out alive. But if we can help hold off the inevitable...

The use of the word bohemian first appeared in the English language in the 19th century to describe the non-traditional lifestyles of marginalised and impoverished artists, writers, journalists, musicians, and actors in major European cities (Wikipedia).

I

HEAR there has been a bit of local kick-back from a small contingent of the community regarding the inaugural polo tournament at Drummond.

You know, a bit of chatter on the local community Facebook sites about how the haves should give over more to the have-nots. "It’s not fair, we are a bohemian community in the Central Highlands and the haves are not a good match", they all piled in to say.

Well, the polo went swimmingly I am here to tell you, as I and a couple of the crew attended. There were all sorts of people in the mix. Locals with money, some pretending to have money and some, such as myself, with rather slim resources. We were all rubbing shoulders with the rich and sometimes famous - a very glam event with everyone frocked up and having a great time.

(It was just a couple of weeks ago we welcomed the largest Australian regional LGBTIQ gathering to the town of Daylesford, now if that’s not a glitzy event I don’t know what is.)

Yes, at the polo there were a few flashy cars about the place and tonnes of young ladies with a distinct dress sense, well a lack of visible panty lines springs to mind, but I am sure that Drummond hasn’t seen such a great Saturday since old Ma Smith’s goat got loose (a story for another day). But the spirit of the event was to raise money for a charity whose mission is to put smiles back on sick kids’ faces, with over seven million young ones being helped by TLC for Kids. That’s an inclusive event to get behind!

Yes, I grant you Bentley was a major sponsor but so were the local guys who gave over their polo arena and some local businesses who donated time, money and resources. And yes, I grant you TLC is not a local charity, but you bet that there will have been plenty of local families touched by them in a dark hour and are likely to into the future. And I have stuck my hand in my pocket for heaps of non-local and local charities, so why was this any different?

I guess my point is that if someone is going to raise money out of the goodness of their hearts, whether it be a sausage sizzle or the sizzle and glam of the polo, I don’t have a problem with it. Although I am a journalist I don’t align myself with being a bohemian but surely the ethos of a bohemiam is live and let live, as long as people are striving for good not bad, life is good.

Yes, some people have exorbitant amounts of wealth and the world is unfairly balanced in terms of the haves and have-nots, but let's not forget our inclusive ethos in the Central Highlands and our "everyone’s welcome" attitude.
