We love writing about local people doing inspiring things and even local people doing ordinary things. And as some people, mostly politicians, have found out, if you are not local you will not appear in the pages of The Local.

You will find The Local, and all the back copies, online at www.tlnews.com.au and we deliver bulk drops throughout the region along with smaller "cafe" packs to every cafe, hotel, bar and restaurant we can find. We've even heard of The Local turning up in places like a cafe in St Kilda and a bar in Bali! All up we have a print and online readership of about 14,000.

The Local's advertising rates have always been kept affordable so even small advertisers can advertise big. Colour is free, the sizes are an eighth, quarter, banner, half and full page and we can help with making up branding and graphics. The world is confusing enough, so we like to keep things simple.

Caelli earns place on honour roll

“I’m currently working with Hepburn Shire Council to establish a Young OUNG Caelli Greenbank’s interest in Australia's Anzac history and inspiring sea-faring adventures are among the accomplishments which Endeavour community scholarship - it will be a fully paid scholarship, we’re still have earned her a place on Hepburn Shire Council’s Heather Mutimer working on it, and we’re hoping to put forward a name by the end of the year.

“We’re inland, so it’s not an opportunity that many would take up or have International Women’s Day Honour Roll.

In 2006, while at school, Caelli was selected as one of 10 winners of the Victorian Premier’s Spirit of ANZAC Prize and joined a two-week study tour to Turkey and the Western Front. On her return she was invited to speak to local schools and the community, culminating in speaking at the Creswick Anzac Day Service in 2008, being named Hepburn Shire Young Citizen for 2008, and becoming an Anzac Centenary Ambassador for Victoria.

This interest also resulted in her personal project of photographing the 25 WWI soldiers listed on the Creswick Cenotaph, and their exhibition in 2018 at Creswick Museum.

Back to tall ships and it all began when Caelli, now 26, climbed aboard Australia’s most famous sail training vessel, the Young Endeavour, as a 17-year-old who had never sailed before. “The tall ships are used as a way of youth development and training. I absolutely fell in love with them, and I’ve been sailing ever since. Being a woman in tall ship sailing is still a little bit unusual, and I am an ambassador, and I’m so passionate about it, especially the opportunities for leadership skills and personal development. I love being able to help pave the way for other women to enter this field.”

That first trip saw Caelli awarded an Order of Australia (NSW) Medallion for “demonstrating the ethos of the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme” after undertaking a gruelling 11-day voyage.

Now, riding on the wave of her Young Endeavour successes, Caelli is setting about making sail training opportunities available to others in Hepburn Shire.

With over 120 days at sea under her belt - including time on that other famous tall ship, Enterprize, Caelli is now a part of the senior crew aboard the Young Endeavour as a volunteer.

“Any time I have a free day and the ship needs some crew, I put my name down.

I’m in a position to help out new trainees.”

And if that's not enough to keep her busy, Caelli is also an experienced writer specialising in a variety of topics surrounding road racing, track cycling and cyclocross. She's also an accomplished linguist, fluent in French and Spanish, and with conversation level in German, Japanese, Italian and Latin - "insofar as you can be conversational in a dead language like Latin!".

For other young women in her community, Caelli has simple but effective advice.

“It’s worth grabbing every opportunity that comes your way, because you never know where it’s going to take you. I like challenges, I like trying new things just for the sake of trying them, because for me, it’s opened up all kinds of doors.”

Caelli, who is now working at Sovereign Hill in Ballarat, was also recognised for her involvement in student representative groups during her university days along with a long and successful history of girl guiding and involvement in community theatre.

Genre of love, compassion and beauty

IA Alysse was born and lived in Melbourne before moving to the Macedon Ranges Shire at the age of eight. The Kyneton artist, who is also taking part in the Daylesford Macedon Ranges Open Studios this year, told her story to Donna Kelly.

"I’ve always sketched in my free time, maintaining an extensive visual diary, I’m rarely without a pencil or paintbrush in hand. I have always had a strong passion for drawing and love for animals, leading me to incorporate the two in my current work.

"Although I had always loved to draw as a hobby, it wasn’t until I studied at John Marsden’s arts-based secondary school, Alice Miller, where I was aspiring to become a vet that I also realised a future as an artist.

"I am currently studying veterinary science at university and working on my artwork in my free time. I have been selling work locally since late 2016. This is my first year as a part of the Daylesford Macedon Ranges Open Studios program. Having in previous years visited other local artists’ studios in the program, it is wonderful to be a part of it myself. I am looking forward to meeting people who are interested in my work.

"Growing up with all the benefits and difficulties a small town has to offer and my life being one of both blessings and hardships, I choose to focus on all that I love in life through art.

"Rejecting confronting and uncomfortable art, I’ve developed my own genre of love, compassion and beauty. I think this makes my work accessible to a wide audience and suited to modern and country decor.

I am constantly exploring a wide range of mediums and consistently developing my own individual style but primarily work in watercolour and charcoal.

"With our world facing climate change and a burgeoning population, I feel it is incredibly important in a world full of hard truths and harsh realities to focus on all that is good, so I choose to focus my artwork on beauty and nature.

"By no means does this mean I am not acknowledging what is wrong. I believe we all need to show more love and compassion to each other and our earth, and that we all have a personal responsibility to care for the planet we have been given.

"Because I believe we give life to what we give energy to, I choose to create beautiful paintings that are inspired by nature and all the lovely creatures around me. My work, while aesthetically attractive, does not lack meaning in its simplicity. I often use symbolism in my artwork and just about all my work has a story behind it, whether it be the source of inspiration or symbolic."

New councillor Z-Net plan launch

Licia Kokocinski was among four candidates standing for the by-election, and she will represent Coliban Ward on Hepburn Shire Council until the next general council election in October 2020.

Returning officer, Jeff Stewart, declared the result at 6.30pm on last Friday, April 5 at Trentham Neighbourhood House.

The former state MP has been a Trentham local for 20 years, living on a small-scale farm. She says action is needed on council investing rates back into Coliban fairly, improved local public access transport links, upgrading the substandard facilities at tourist attractions like Trentham Falls and greater access to community health services.

Before retiring in 2014 Ms Kokocinski's career focused around policy and advocacy in areas of local government, disability, health and ageing and diverse communities.

A report presented at last Thursday's launch said “the first stage celebrates Hepburn’s leadership in sustainable energy, with a concentration on energy efficiency opportunities and energy generation on-site”.

“This is consistent with adopting the least-cost approach, which will help to reduce the amount of ‘nearby’ renewable energy projects required to achieve a 100 per cent renewable energy supply. This phase includes the delivery and celebration of a second stage solar farm at the Hepburn Wind site to complement the existing 4.1MW capacity of Gale and Gusto (wind turbines). It also includes the delivery of a local bioenergy demonstration project of 65kW capacity.”

“This first phase is also proposed to develop capacity and commence delivery of reforestation, capable of balancing a renewable, sustainable supply of firewood and ultimately creating the land use change required to offset agricultural emissions."

This is not correct. The farm is for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.

Gary runs a fresh produce shop in Newlyn and has also published a children’s story from drawings he sent his two sons while on service himself over a period of 30 years. The book, The Adventures of Sniffer and Flutter, is helping raise money for his dream, a farm where Iraq and Afghanistan veterans can go to recover.

“Australia,” he says, “has lost more troops to suicide than in Iraq and Afghanistan, and it’s the same in the US and the UK.” Gary's aim is to raise $2 million for the farm where veterans can live in cabins, while raising stock and growing their food. He wants them to stop thinking about suicide.

Next, he plans a 1500km walk from Melbourne to Canberra to raise awareness and funds for veterans.

From art bazaar to Buddha, the amazing world of Peter Stripes

I

F PETER Stripes didn’t exist, someone would probably invent him. How else would you find a pioneer rock promoter turned designer of plastic miniskirts, coats, fabrics galore, an Australiana merchant turned Buddhist, with the fan of his restored 1974 orange Porsche painted like a Tibetan prayer wheel?

“The faster you go,” he says, “the more merit you gain.”

Oh, and its interior has a stunning digitised print lining featuring stars and more.

Sitting among Tibetan symbols, peace signs, fabric and paintings galore in a studio fringed by waving prayer flags handset in a Glenlyon garden bursting with vegetables, fruit and flowers, this exuberant, irreverent and at times hilarious character riffs on aspects of his 77 years.

His parents were Jewish refugees from the Nazis, who escaped to England, only to be interned in Canada. They were in the rag trade in Melbourne, he says, while he places himself in the late 1960s hippy psychedelic era.

Hippy it may have been, but his scene burst with energy. He made cufflinks by gluing on stones. Earrings were made from ping pong balls dipped into fluorescent colours.

Fabrics were turned into belts and braces, which boomed when Graham Kennedy promoted him on TV as Mr Stripes.

He had a trendy In Gear shop in the grande dame of Collins St, Georges. A-shaped men’s coats raced out the door, some with fluoro stripes. He hurled paint against canvas, Jackson Pollock-style, eventually having to charge for entry to his South Yarra gallery.

He wore a batik sarong to business meetings and drove a Porsche.

“Billy Thorpe, Max Merritt and Margret Roadknight were among the stars at our first rock festival, The Miracle at Launching Place, before Sunbury.” He bursts into song, “Some day I’ll have money, money isn’t easy,” written for the festival (by Spectrum, I later find).

Now some of his clothes from The House of Stripes are in the National Gallery of Victoria collection. Back then, he says, “I was always in trouble. Every couple of weeks I was on the front page.”

The Melbourne City Council fined him for opening House of Stripes at 1pm on a Saturday, Gallery A in South Yarra threatened to sue him for calling his place Gallery B, the six-man Drug Squad raided his shop at the corner of Bourke and Elizabeth streets after he made the interior too dark to see in, handed out flowers, burnt incense and had The Doors blasting out. The council fined him for painting the scaffolding on his building.

When a council officer came to complain, Peter put a Members Only sign on the shop door and closed it.

He encouraged Hare Krishnas to drum and chant nearby. His future wife, Jenny, was the one person to open an account with him.

His clothes sold in Sydney. “You could buy hundreds of metres of denim and restyle it into fashion. Everything was Australian-made.”

His Art Nouveau Bazaar in Toorak Road, South Yarra came and went.

Three clothing shops in Chapel Street were opened by him before he helped start the first vegetarian restaurant, Shakahari in Carlton, and got into Tibetan Buddhism. Along the way, he set up an Australiana shop in Armadale, moving into making gift wrapping paper from recycled paper.

Throughout all this, he says, “I was above greed and money”.

Then he met the Dalai Lama. He left fashion and helped establish Tibetan Buddhism in Australia and around the world.

Moving to Daylesford “30 or 40 years ago”, he helped establish the Dharma School.

Now, he says, “You need a million dollars to go to Daylesford to have a bad cup of coffee”.

Peter Stripes beams as he talks of his seven children and 14 grandchildren. “That means I have an Italian family, a Greek family and a Japanese family.”

We walk out to his sign-covered van at the roadside. One sign says Porsche, others, Not my war, Mindness not Blindness, Corroboree, Welcome to Country, Gondwana, Uluru, Walkabout, Human Rights, Integrity and Free Tibet. Signs of all stripes.

New Buster on the block

A

LEX Hancocks’ nickname growing up was Buster and his partner is a McGinniss, so the moniker for his new Daylesford store, Buster McGee, was an easy choice.

So too was his stock in trade – men’s clothing, travel items and quirky extras. Buster McGee provides an alternative option, catering predominantly for the “boys” and also to locals and visitors alike.

At the moment, Buster McGee’s clothing range revolves around well-known brand Scotch & Soda, saving savvy shoppers a drive to Melbourne. More labels from overseas will be arriving in time for winter.

Throw in some fabulous leather travel pieces, some very nicely packaged smaller items which are perfect for gifts, greeting cards and soon-to-arrive cushions from Castlemaine, and there is plenty of browsing to be done. And Alex does not mind those who are quick to say, “I’m just browsing”.

That’s a potential future customer who he is only too happy to help when they are ready.

“Buster McGee is a casual environment where I am able to offer traditional service and take time to talk to people as well as wrapping purchases. I also like clean windows!” And it’s not just the men being catered for. Women are also finding their way to the Howe Street store and buying either for themselves, or partners, children or nieces and nephews.

Alex moved to the retail environment after a successful background in the corporate world including stints at large media agencies and travel organisation, Expedia. He re-located from the Blue Mountains to Hepburn Springs where he now lives with his partner Liam McGinniss and their two pugs, Miss Molly and Miss Dusty.

“The Blue Mountains are 1.5 hours from Sydney, just like Daylesford to Melbourne, so I had a four-hour commute by train back there.

Now I have a four-minute commute.”

Not that it’s all been clear sailing. Alex founded Buster McGee on December 4 and signed the lease for his shop on February 1. In between were the Hepburn Springs bushfires which came very close to Alex and Liam’s house – where all the stock was stored.

That night, the couple slept on the floor of the shop. But then the power was switched on on February 4, Kim from Signsation added simple but strong signage, and the store officially opened on February 15. And there’s been no looking back.

Alex said the region had been welcoming with strong sales – getting even stronger with the cooler weather coming and people looking for winter staples.

“I love Howe Street too. It’s a destination in its own right. There’s always plenty of parking and there are so many other great stores. I decided to go into retail because I enjoy the interaction with people and helping them find what they want.”

Buster McGee is located at 10-12 Howe Street, Daylesford and is open from Wednesday to Monday between 9.30am and 5.30pm.

You were our countercultural Diogenes, living on a free-cycled couch, eating vegetables scavenged from a market dumpster.

But finally finding a home in Melbourne among the drifters and travellers who called everywhere and nowhere home.

HE prize pool for the 2019 Trentham Easter Art & Craft Show now totals $5700 and includes the new Matthew Harding Technical Excellence Prize ($500).

Matthew, who lived and worked in Trentham, was an internationally-renowned sculptor. Sadly, he ended his life in February last year. This award was proposed

by Trentham residents as a way to honour Matthew’s memory. All entries are eligible for this award.

This year there are two awards for junior entrants: the Junior Art & Craft Award ($100) for 4 to 12-yearold entrants; the Teen Art & Craft Award ($200) for 13 to 17-year-old entrants. The Trentham & Districts Community Bank Branch and the Sinatra Family are funding these awards.

Opening night is Thursday, April 18 from 7.30pm.

Cost is $15 per head with those under 18, entrants and sponsors free. The show is then open from Friday, April 19 to Sunday, April 21 from 10am to 4pm. On Monday, April 22, opening hours are 10am to 3pm. Entry is $2.

Proceeds from last year's show went to: Only a Jockey art installation; Trentham Primary School and Kindergarten for choir and music outings; Dr Gweneth Wisewould 80-year anniversary exhibition; Dancing a Jig with Dad art installation (in memory of Matthew Harding); and the Blackwood CERT garage fundraiser.

Clunes Common long closed to the public

W

HILE not many people would realise it today, most towns in this region, indeed across Victoria, had areas set aside known as Town Commons. It was just one instance of the widespread colonial practice in the 19th century of reserving specific pieces of land for a variety of public uses.

By 1890 more than 6000 square kilometres existed as officially designated common land. Unfortunately, much of this land has been divided up, built upon and sold off over the years and there are very few intact examples to be found anywhere in the state. However, Clunes is one of those rare exceptions.

If you want to go and see it, the Clunes Town Common lies north of the present township, straddling Glengower Road. Bracketed by Birch Creek to the east and Creswick Creek to the west, it covers about 216 hectares. Its boundaries remain as they were set when first proclaimed by the Victorian Parliament in 1861.

In those times, well before the advent of modern social welfare support, town commons were an essential part of the fabric of the surrounding community; as pointed out by researcher Ben Maddison in A Kind Of Joy-Bell: Common Land, Wage Work and the Eight Hours Movement In Nineteenth Century NSW. “In 19th century New South Wales (and Victoria) the commons - denominated as either Temporary or Permanent…were set aside for travelling stock, pasturage, timber, water, indigenous communities, camping, recreation, ‘public purposes’ (schools, churches, cemeteries) and village, town and suburban expansion.”

In local terms this meant that, “every inhabitant within the Municipal District of Clunes be entitled to departure six head of cattle or horses on the common”, and that a herdsman receiving a wage of 50 pounds per annum would be appointed to manage stock placed there. Later, both Chinese and European residents could pay five shillings for a garden licence issued by the Department of Land and Survey (today's DELWP) to “enter upon Crown Land not exceeding in area one acre for the purposes of garden and residence”.

However, unlike in the English tradition of productive common lands which had always been an insurance against hard times, common lands in the colonies were often little more than a resource to be exploited. They often became a locus of competition or conflicts over stocking rates and boundary maintenance and were frequently neglected with weeds, rabbits and mining activity contributing to their eventual decline.

The Clunes Common suffered from these issues and by 1918 the Ballarat Courier had a small news item titled: Clunes Common Recommended For Subdivision. But while other town commons were carved up, the Clunes Common remained largely intact and in regular use right up to the 1960s. One of those people who remembers it well is John Overberg who settled in Clunes with his parents and five siblings from Holland in 1955.

“We had a house cow, as many people used to in those times, for milk and to make our own butter, cream and cottage cheese. The cow would stay at the house overnight but after milking in the morning you would just let it loose on the common and after school you would collect it and milk again. Sometimes you had to walk a couple of miles to find her. We also had about 16 goats there. The common was certainly an important asset to people like us to help make ends meet. It was also a great playground as we grew up.”

But by the turn of the 1970s the Clunes Common was little more than unused public land and was leased to a local farmer. It is now fully fenced and off-limits to the public. But few tears were shed at the time because society had moved on.

The old dependence on labourious activities such as maintaining a milking cow was hardly necessary when supermarkets could provide such produce cheaply and reliably. What’s more, with the emergence of the sort of social security net taken for granted today families no longer have to grow their own food or collect their own milk to survive, they can do it for fun.

There is also the fact regional councils no longer allow dairy cows to wander on the outskirts of towns nor permit mobs of goats to amble down suburban streets looking for blackberries to eat. The past is certainly another country.

Muses' Delight debut at Porcupine Ridge

HE Muses’ Delight will make their Daylesford debut on Wednesday, April 17 in an intimate house concert in Porcupine Ridge. This vibrant young ensemble will present a footstomping program of baroque and folk music inspired by dance and the raucous Australian bush.

The concert program explores how the classical and folk music of the British Isles has been transformed over time into a uniquely Australian style. The traditional music of England, Scotland and Ireland sit side-by-side with bush dance tunes that once filled halls and pubs in regional New South Wales. The Muses’ Delight has a very special connection to this music, which began with a tunebook used by fiddler Katie Kurtz, great-grandmother of Muses’ cellist Lucy Price.

“My aunt gave me a book of tunes that belonged to my great-grandmother, who used to play fiddle in bush dances around Mudgee and Cassilis with her husband Jim,” Lucy says. “It is really special to be connecting to my family history in this way and to be playing music with two great friends, just like Katie Kurtz would have done at her bush dances.”

Stepping from there into the classical tradition, elegant dance works by Handel and Purcell will be contrasted with Ross Edwards’ Ecstatic Dances, which magically evoke the sounds and spirit of Australia’s unique birdsong.

Hailing from Melbourne, The Muses’ Delight is made of genre-crossing musicians Meredith Beardmore (flute), Katie Yap (violin/viola) and Lucy Price (cello). Formed in late 2017, this young ensemble is passionate about bringing 17th and 18th century stories to life through creative programming, the use of original instruments, and the combination of scholarship and spontaneity in performance.

Bringing the sheer joy of folk music together with the elegance of high art music from the classical period, The Muses’ Delight weave fascinating stories through every concert.

PON receiving an enquiry about protecting outdoor timber cladding and fencing, I turned to my friend and wood sculptor to ask what he recommends.

Mark Rosenbrock, or Captain Carver as he is colloquially called, has been working with dry, weathered, previously infested timber for more years than he has fingers and toes. Working in nature, from nature and carving for playgrounds and public areas he has a penchant for environmentally friendly, low volatile organic compound products.

He has used many oils including tung and linseed (flax). Linseed takes between 12 hours and three days to dry between coats depending on whether your oil is heat treated or polymerised and what your weather is like that day. He found that natural oils penetrated - after an initial citrus solvent or thinner coat, but required annual oiling. This is particularly true for external use. When the dirt and rain collected and mixed on the sculptures they would run dark lines down the timber.

Several years ago, he came across a Victorian, Australian-made company specialising in environmentally friendly timber finishing products. Quantum timber finishes are “vegetable derived resinated oils sourced entirely from renewable resources”. They are low in VOCs and wash up is with water.

Mark says he can “chuck” the product at the sculpture and still the finish will be smooth and streak-free. He uses Timbre Plus Vertical. After the initial three coats, the same as any oiling, you only need to do retouches to keep the timber protected. He uses it constantly and has no hesitation in recommending it to others. I like his confidence.

Naturally oiled interior projects, when out of direct sunlight, will last longer between re-oiling coats.

When anyone uses timber, know it is never a product to forget about.

It dries out and likes to be nourished. Whether your project is a fence, stair railing, timber inside floor or an outside verandah with timber cladding, remember it will require regular maintenance to keep the timber looking good, moist and long lasting.

Oiling, waxing, sanding, staining, nourishing or adding a coating are your choices for finishing timber. Whatever you decide to use to suit your lifestyle and timber project, it will benefit from regular loving care to give it a long beautiful life.

AVING visited and raved endlessly about the amazing gardens of the stately homes, chateaux and palaces throughout England and Europe, it was a pleasure, last week, to revisit this now internationally-recognised destination for garden lovers and tourists alike.

English-born life-long gardener David Glenn, and his acclaimed artist wife Criss Canning, first set up the nursery and garden around their old farmhouse on the dry, windswept plains of the Victorian Goldfields 25 years ago, in the midst of the 2000 to 2010 drought years.

Little wonder the experience they gained in developing their garden has now brought international recognition for the innovative use of non-native plantings in such conditions and has been described as "one of the best examples of gardening with perennials" in the world.

David's constant seeking and sourcing of new varieties of perennials has led to his amassing possibly the largest collection of perennial salvias in the world.

Covering several hectares, the garden features frost-hardy plants requiring minimum watering and is a world-renowned benchmark in dry climate, sustainable gardening.

Following the traditional English style, Lambley's entrance is through and along a wide, tree-lined avenue up to the homestead, surrounded on each side by tall, immaculately trimmed evergreen hedges.

The main geometrically laid-out garden features wide beds brimming with flowering perennials of the day. Being autumn, this means almost every variety imaginable are at their best, especially the aforementioned salvias in profusion, complete with their attendant honey bees and butterflies. And, if you're quiet, maybe a local nectar-seeking honey-eater.

The beds are intersected with wide, some tree-lined, paths leading to a sculptural feature or, maybe, a beckoning bench from which you can rest and enjoy the view.

My favourite place of all is the Windflower Walk, pictured top right, a delightful shaded avenue flanked by masses of white anemone cross hybrida with a welcoming bench at the end.

Also within the garden are several beds featuring a collection of the biggest, healthiest cabbages and other tempting vegetables I've seen. All part of the production of Lambley Nursery's vegetable seed collection, available from the adjacent nursery which features an amazing selection of frost-hardy perennials and other plants, many of which I've only seen in overseas catalogues.

HE Federal Government’s 2019/2020 Budget ticks many items on the Real Estate Institute of Victoria’s wish list and will set Victoria on a strong course for further economic growth, REIV chief executive officer Gil King says.

"The Budget is a shot in the arm for small businesses which are the backbone of our economy. Most real estate agents are small businesses and local employers which will benefit greatly from company tax cuts to 25 per cent and the significant increase in the immediate asset right-off. These stimuli will enable small business to invest in growing their business, employing more people and training their workforce."

Mr King said the REIV welcomed the $6.2 billion in infrastructure commitments to Victoria, the majority to go towards public transport and roads. "This funding will help address the dire need for upgrades to regional roads, while having a positive impact on property values.

"Regional Victoria has weathered the storm of the recent property downturn, in part this is due to improved infrastructure in and around major towns and the Budget allocation for more spending in this area will accelerate the real estate appeal of Victoria’s regional areas.

"The REIV welcomes the funding boost for training, together with the 10 new training hubs in regional areas. Real estate agents in country towns are often a pivotal cog in their communities and we intend to work closely with the Federal Government to ensure that regional agents can access these training funds to assist young people to get a great start in their real estate careers.

"We welcome the Budget’s projected surplus position in the forward estimates and personal income tax cuts for 94 per cent of Australians which will mean people have additional disposable income."

Mr King said the REIV acknowledged the Federal Government’s intention to continue with current negative gearing arrangements; a sound decision in the context of low property market confidence.

"This Budget also deals with tough issues in our communities where real estate professionals are often in the frontline dealing with the implications. We welcome the increased funding for addressing domestic violence, youth mental health and suicide prevention.

"Next month the REIV will commence training for real estate professionals on dealing with instances of family violence to better equip our members on this important issue."

Clearance rates

ICTORIAN auction clearance rates have been at their highest levels in months in recent weeks, suggesting confidence in the property market is picking up, according to the REIV.

A clearance rate represents the percentage of properties that sell under the hammer compared with the total number listed for auction. For example, if 10 homes are listed for auction in Bendigo and six sell, then the clearance rate would be 60 per cent.

Victoria recorded an auction clearance rate of 55 per cent during March 2019 which was an improvement on lower rates at the end of last year - October (53 per cent), November (50 per cent) and December (46 per cent).

Shepparton is leading the charge for regional Victoria, achieving an impressive 90 per cent clearance rate so far in 2019, selling nine out of 10 auction listings under the hammer. Wangaratta also sold its only auction listing for 2019, giving it a 100 per cent clearance rate.

Mildura’s nine successful auction sales has led to a clearance rate of 75 per cent.

Two properties have sold under the hammer in Ballarat central, contributing to a 66.7 per cent clearance rate and Warrnambool has recorded a 66.7 per cent clearance rate with six auction sales. Geelong has clocked up three auction sales during the first few months of the year, giving the city a clearance rate of 60 per cent.

Volume-wise, the most auctions have been held in Torquay (32), Highton (20), Belmont (19), Geelong West (17) and Newtown (17) in 2019.

The most expensive property to sell via auction was a four-bedroom home in Wallington which changed hands for $1.4 million, followed by a three-bedroom home in Geelong West which fetched $1.35 million and a four-bedroom house close to the beach in Torquay which sold for $1.27 million.

At the other end of the spectrum, there were three auction sales of less than $100,000 in regional Victoria so far this year. A one-bedroom caravan cabin sold for just $34,100 in Mildura, a three-bedroom house sold in Kerang for $67,000 and another three-bedroom house in Tarnagulla fetched $92,500.

Food, laughter and theatre at Chaplins “A day without laughter is a day wasted” – Charlie Chaplin

“

I want to bring back laughter and food.”

That’s the sentiment of Mel Thomas, fittingly the owner of Chaplins, which has just moved all of five doors down, from 32 to 22 High Street in Trentham.

Mel and Chaplins has been in Trentham for seven years but had long outgrown their original premises. So rather than worry about drawn out renovations, they found a new spot and in just three weeks, added a big kitchen and opened again.

“Ask a bunch of hospitality chicks to move you and it just happens,” says Mel. Chaplins is now open seven days a week (“we have to pay for that kitchen!”) from 7.30am to 3pm but if people are around, it will stay open longer.

And once the alcohol licence is sorted, there will be some fun theatre restaurant entertainment happening. Mel, who started as a street performer with her fabulous Chaplin impersonation, said there were “a whole heap of idiots” who were also clamouring to don the hat and twirl the cane.

“It’s just going to be random theatre sports, back to laughing and having fun. We have spent six years working on our identity and now I want laughter and food again.”

Mel said the closing of the original Chaplins had been a big party with lots of locals mixed with espresso martinis. “It had to be coffee, because that’s our thing and we do it very well.”

The opening of the new Chaplins also saw the same regulars invited but this time with a twist.

There was no charge but everyone had to try something new from the menu whether that was Vegemite rarebit, baked eggs or even baked beans.

“We had the place buzzing with all those same people, got the kitchen fired up and all the staff working out their systems – without a judgmental audience. It was fantastic.”

Mel says the town has embraced Chaplins from day one and she has done the same back. “I absolutely love this little town.”

She also ensures everything for Chaplins is sourced from within 100km with an ethical and inclusive policy. “We don’t have palm oil and everything is organic and free range. And we are helping Trentham grow. Retail needs us to feed the people and then they can go and shop. We all need each other.”

HE Mechanics Institute in Kyneton was buzzing recently with the sound of a group of enthusiastic voices with the launch of the With One Voice Central Victoria Choir by Cobaw Community Health.

Cobaw is one of five organisations across Australia to receive seed funding from Creativity Australia to establish a new choir with the aim of building social networks in the region, while giving people the opportunity to experience the many health and wellbeing benefits of singing in a group.

The choir will meet every Wednesday at 7pm at the Mechanics Institute in Kyneton and is open to everyone regardless of singing experience. Gabriel Macura, an internationally acclaimed singer and musician, will conduct the group.

Active women strategy Chainsaws for women

EPBURN Shire Council has announced the draft version of the Hepburn Shire Council Active Women and Girls Strategy is now available for feedback.

Council, in partnership with Sport and Recreation Victoria, has developed a 10year Active Women and Girls Strategy specific to the local community.

The development of this strategy is critical to address the current inequality that exists between female and male participation in physical activity, allowing for more girls and women to experience health benefits from regular active participation.

ACEDON Ranges Shire women looking to build their independence, confidence and chainsaw skills are encouraged to express their interest in participating in The Women’s Chainsaw

Council piloted the program last year in the Lancefield, Benloch and Cobaw areas, giving 10 local women the opportunity to build skills in chainsaw use, safety, design and carving, and emergency preparedness.

This year council is inviting expressions of interest from women throughout the shire who are interested in being trained in safe and effective chainsaw use.

The program includes: an accredited trim and crosscut chainsaw safety, handling and maintenance course; an emergency preparedness and skill-based course; and a chainsaw carving course.

The 20 course participants will be supplied with chainsaws and safety equipment, with lunch provided. Free childcare is also available if required.

Mayor Janet Pearce said the program was an opportunity for women to build practical skills, self-reliance and confidence to prepare for and respond to emergencies.

“This is a fantastic program that we’re opening up to women in all areas of the Macedon Ranges. We have 20 places available in the program, with priority given to women in higher fire risk areas, single parent families, women in isolation and those experiencing financial hardship.

“While it is about upskilling and building knowledge, the program is also fun, creative and a great way to meet other women. I’m pleased that Council is able to offer this initiative, and look forward to seeing expressions of interest from women throughout the shire.”

Expressions of interest for the program close on Sunday, April 14.

Pick me, pick me...

Just sayin’...

ATIENCE is a virtue unfortunately - because it's one less virtue that I have.

Well, I actually can wait a little while for things to happen. It just depends what they are. When I call the dentist and they are busy for a week or so, I don't mind.

When I call the doctor and they don't have someone pretty much free that minute, I get annoyed.

But there are three things I have been waiting on for a while. Quite patiently I think, but now I am starting to run out of that virtue.

The first is the outcome of my White Ribbon committee nomination. This started in September last year when I received a media release about the Hepburn Shire Council looking for people to nominate. I thought "I am a woman, I don't like domestic violence and I can help promote any initiatives in The Local". Who wouldn't want me on board? So I asked for a form, filled it out and sent it back. Eight months later I am still waiting to hear if I have been successful. And I wouldn't even mind if I had been knocked back, if someone had just let me know. Well, I might mind a little...

The second thing I have been waiting for is the release of the $200,000 events funding offered in January this year by the state government after the collapse of the ill-fated Live.

Love.Life. festival. I naively wrote about it way back then and assumed that pretty soon lots of little groups would be getting some nice helping hands. Maybe $10,000 to 20 groups?

That would be a nice shot in the arm. (Talking of shots in the arm, does anyone know why flu injections are not available until almost May? There's already an outbreak in Queensland.

But I digress.)

Anyway, I asked a few questions this week and found out the $200,000 had only been an election promise - just as well Labor won - and there will be no funding until after the state government hands down its budget. That won't happen until the end of this month and then I guess there is more red tape involved. But if I was running an event I would be asking my local pollie how I can get a head start on a funding application.

Finally, last November we received an offer too good to refuse. It was from the Bendigo Bank who finally had set up a business credit card with frequent flyer points. Finally all that money going to the printer was going to pay off! Not to mention the bonus points which just came with the card. But no, as no points accumulated, we asked what was going on.

Turns out we received the wrong card. But no worries, they said, we'll get that sorted. And so we waited. And nothing got sorted. And then, just last week they said the points were about to land, but then their system went down and we missed the window of opportunity for that month. WTF? Can't someone manually override the system? Yes, we were told, and they were going to make it happen! But for the record, we are still in Glenlyon and not on any planes. Just sayin'...

T

HE digital waterfall has reached capacity, well it seems that way. Life is getting over-run with the online market and messages.

Big W is shedding 30 stores or so, and who knows how many employees, because of the online shopping hyperspace.

But I do feel a small shift away from the screen and that is the human ability that limits us from retaining too much information, or at least until an invention comes along and allows our brains to be plugged into back-up drives that we neatly put in the bedside drawer of an evening. We will then be able to plug them back in like a digital colostomy bag of a morning.

I read that a couple of schools have shifted back to paper due to the students preferring this antiquated system to retain information. And then there are us oldfashioned people who are trying to catch up to the digital market place but know we prefer print.

This occurred to me chasing back through an Instagram post that caught my eye during last fortnight's Daylesford versus Hepburn footy game. It was an impressive mark that keen footy follower Bettina Ralph shot. I tried to look back through the thousands of posts since the weekend, as at the time I couldn’t remember who posted it.

As I scrolled through the vast sea of photos it dawned on me, a moment somewhat like a light bulb but brighter, social media is a load of rubbish. What a bunch of self-loving, self-centred, self-involved, conceited, egotistical, vainglorious people we have become. Granted, in amongst the duck-face, fish-gape, hair-curtain, kissy-face and “the claw” selfie poses there were a couple of great photos of country life, kids, sports (Bettina's comes to mind) and animals. But on the whole it was all about portraying ourselves in a perfectly unnatural light.

Ahh, but I digress. In the end I couldn’t find what I was looking for, so I simply picked up the phone. This strikes me as weird why companies would choose to limit their marketing to online and drop print from their campaigns. I mean, if I see an advert on TV it normally has so many plots, sub-plots and gags that I can’t remember who it represented or let alone what their contact details are. And then there is online; a never-ending, congested place where photos and messages blast upon your screen and drop down to the bottom of the page in less time than it takes to marinate your teabag.

If I am looking for a business, I prefer to go to the coffee table, find the newspaper and look them up. Sure, online is a huge part of our lives now, however I believe it is starting to settle down and find its place as "part" of our world, not our world. I guess it’s like any new toy on the market, if it’s good everyone embraces it, uses it to death and like all humans gets bored with it. Take TV dinners back in the 70s, they were a great thing but now we all like to eat fresh and local as much as we can. Digital rant over...

Hepburn Cricket Club scoring runs

EPBURN Cricket Club is expanding after two years.

Club president Lindsay Olver said the club had reformed in 2017, fielding an Under 16 team and senior team in the Castlemaine Association.

That first year was very successful with the Under 16s in the finals and the senior team taking out the B Grade Premiership.

Mr Olver said this season saw the opposite result as the seniors played finals, but bowed out in the semi. "A brilliant display by the Under 16s however, saw them undefeated all year, ending in a 10-wicket Grand Final victory.

"Captain Nash Robinson was superb all year, winning the association's best player in B Grade and vice-captain Brayden Yanner finished with a batting average of 103."

Next season Hepburn will field two teams in the Under 16 competition with Nash and Brayden respective captains. Mr Olver said hepburn would also field an Under 13 team playing on Friday nights.
