Writer Kyle Barnes caught up with an old mate, artist and sparky extraordinaire Gary Miles, who with his wife Jen, has recently opened an eclectic shop in Creswick called Imperial Lighting.
“I started getting a real shine for lighting about 10 years ago, renovating a lot of properties around Hepburn Shire and starting to work with people in their kitchens and dining rooms. I had a real interest in how light plays a role in our lives and in our homes. And what started out being a small thing started to grow. As we started to look for more and more ways of doing things, it forced us to research and discover and learn what light does in a room space. We play with things and break things down, light fittings, all sorts of things, from garden lighting to inside lighting in a lounge room. The past 10 years have been very interesting in what we can do with light, from light bulbs to the fittings, where we put the light and where we put contrast in the room.”

Daylesford artist Brian Nash was born in Melbourne and has been painting professionally since the ‘70s.
His wide-ranging subjects include sensitive nudes, gracious old Australian hotels and buildings, the Flinders Ranges and historical towns, mountain cattlemen of the High Country, romantic and historical gardens, and the flower gatherers of Monbulk, Olinda and Dingley. His subjects are executed with great strength and feeling. The colours are palpably brilliant and the images poetic. He has had over 20 successful one-man exhibitions and has numerous awards to his name. His paintings are in collections in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, several European countries and in private collections throughout Australia. The Golden Shire is the name of Brian’s stunning book which covers the locations and surroundings of the Hepburn Shire. The inspiration for the paintings is the natural beauty, the elegant historic architecture and the derelict buildings of the gold rush - all situated within Hepburn Shire.

In the late 1850s, there was no bridge to cross the ford of the Coliban River until J.B. Enders built a bridge. He charged a toll for the use of his bridge, which did not sit well with all.
A Kyneton Guardian newspaper report dated June 26, 1869 reads: “The Hon. Treasurer of the Kyneton Ladies’ Benevolent Society desires to acknowledge the receipt of 10s (shillings), being the amount of toll charged by Mr J.B. Enders to Councillor Sinclair for the privilege of crossing his (Mr Enders’) private bridge over the Coliban.” Jeremiah Benjamin Enders was born July 15,1828 in New York and in the late 1840s he headed to the Californian gold rush in the hopes of striking gold. His prospecting dreams may have been shortlived because he emigrated to Australia in 1852. He started at the Bathurst Goldfields in central New South Wales, then headed to the McIvor goldfields in Heathcote, Victoria and finally to Forest Creek Goldfields, now known as Castlemaine. Kim Johnson grew up in the NSW rural town of Murrumburrah, about 150km west of Canberra.
When he was 11 he was walking to school with his brother when he noticed a man painting a huge mural on a shop wall. He was fascinated - so much so that he was not watching where he was walking and smacked into a light post, much to the amusement of his brother who had not even noticed the artwork before him. “I couldn’t wait for the school bell to ring so I could get back to see the completed work. It was a masterpiece. It was around the time of decimal currency and the artist had painted a man holding a one-dollar note in one and a cent coin in the other. It was magnificent and I was hooked. When I retold the story to my mother she said the man was a ‘signwriter’ and that was it. That’s what I wanted to be - a signwriter. I was inspired and entered several poster competitions at school with reasonable success.”

Sometime this year, a memorial service for Thomas Burrowes will be held, 83 years after his death.
Tom was a wireless operator and air gunner on the Beaufort Bomber A9-211 when it was hit during a bombing mission to Rabaul during World War II on December 14, 1943. It was his first and only mission. Tom was 20. Of 10 aircraft to fly out on that mission, only one went down. Among those attending the service will be Daylesford couple Robert Burrowes and Anita McKone – and many other family members. Robert is Tom’s nephew. “My father was born in 1923, he was a twin, and he grew up through the Depression, a pretty tough time as you can imagine, like it was for everyone in that era. But then of course war broke out in Europe in 1939 and came to Australia in January 1942, a few weeks after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Dad’s twin brother, Tom, had been an RAAF cadet from the age of about 16 so once the war started in the Pacific, he joined up but couldn’t become a pilot because he had rheumatic fever as a kid, but he was happy to be a wireless air gunner.”

“I am a pharmacist and nutritionist, and also a certified menopause practitioner. I moved to Daylesford in September last year, but before that we were in inner Melbourne and I’ve had an online clinic for women for nearly 10 years. And just naturally women with perimenopause and menopause have been sent to me by local practitioners mainly because they’re a similar age to myself, I think. You tend to attract people who are like you. I’ve developed a bit of a system that has really helped hundreds of women get through this; really understanding that as well. The full holistic view. And through that, all my patients were saying I was always booked out and how could I get that information to more people? That’s where the idea of the book came about so I could really clear up some of that confusion on social media and everywhere these days with some science-based info that women could actually trust.”

A secret you might like!
It’s not really a secret, because you can see it any time you visit Daylesford, but it is unique. In 1901, the Post Master General’s Department built a new post office at Little Hampton which was just 2.5 metres x 3.5 metres - with the capacity to hold worker and one customer. The post office closed in 1972 and was moved to a site in Daylesford. But where is it? That is the secret part. Just ask a local, they’ll be able to tell you.
