Local Lines An Awful Reality Check

On a sunny Sunday morning Back in 1995 Running the Tuggeranong Hill fire trail Feeling good to be alive.

About 3 and half k out from home Give or take a metre or two A father and his son I found Comforting an injured kangaroo.

It had dislocated its hip When its leg got caught in a fence.

The man and son had rescued it, Its pain and panic looked intense.

They asked me if I’d go for help While they stayed with the kangaroo.

Mobile phones not yet around But I knew just what to do.

I had a friend not far away, I hoped that he might be home.

I ran down and knocked on his door.

He let me use his phone.

I ran up the hill to tell the two That a ranger was on his way.

Over an hour before he appeared.

He’d said, “I’ll be there without delay.”

The ranger arrived eventually.

At the injured roo he took a look.

“Will it be OK?” the young man asked.

The ranger’s head he slowly shook.

From the cabin of his ute The ranger pulled out a rifle.

“Dislocated hips and broken legs, With these we cannot trifle.”

He instructed, “Turn your back, The roo is better off dead.”

He carefully aimed the rifle And put a bullet in its head.

The man and boy were horrified.

Three hours they’d nursed that roo.

It was an awful reality check.

For me it was one too.

Daylesford Post Office - Legends of Lockdown

L

UKE Zu and Steve Mason from Daylesford Post Office are the latest nominations for Legends of Lockdown.

The pair, who have been wearing masks and gloves long before anything was mandated, have been kept more than just busy, with many businesses pivoting to operating online and many people at home shopping online.

And social distancing means it all takes that little extra time.

But customers have been appreciating the service.

"I’d like to nominate the guys at the Daylesford Post Office. These two have been working tirelessly, always cheerful and helpful even when the parcels are piling up around their ears, which they often are. Their load has been huge, but nothing is ever a problem.

"I reckon they are Legends of Lockdown."

Another wrote: "Daylesford Post Office is a real lifeline during these days of lockdown. My business is now purely online and my sales all happen through the post office.

"The guys there have been great, offering advice on the best way to send my products, and always have a smile and a personal greeting.

"They are also very safety conscious and always checking they have the right number of people inside, which is difficult when people pop around corners to address envelopes or sometimes come in the back way. Well done to them both, legends for sure."

Recognising our Legends of Lockdown

D

O YOU know a Legend of Lockdown? They don't need a cape but they do need to have gone above and beyond.

The Local would like to recognise those people. Maybe they have served hundreds of meals to people in need, perhaps they have knitted warm clothing to keep others warm or perhaps it's just a neighbour who has helped deliver groceries to your front door?

Maybe it's a healthcare worker on the front line, someone who has set up a community helpline or a person who has kept the community informed.

And everyone has enough going on, so we want to keep it simple. Just email your legend along with 50-100 words about what they have done to enter legend status.

We also need their contact number - some people don't like surprises.

We will keep the entries happening until September 28, so there is still a little time to have a think about who has helped get you, or others, through this extraordinary time.

If lockdown lifts by then, and let's all hope it does, we are hoping to have a ceremony to say thanks! If we are still socially distancing then we will publish names and details in editions of The Local.

Cricket coaches, players needed for Trentham

RENTHAM District Cricket Club is after a coach for the 2020/21 season.

Spokesperson John Cowell said the club was a successful family club, playing in the Gisborne District Cricket Association, which trained and played at the Trentham Recreation Reserve.

"The club is taking expressions of interest for a coach of the following teams: Senior Competition – men and women of all abilities, training from 6pm weeknights with games from 1pm on Saturdays; and Junior Competition – boys under the age of 13 and girls under the age of 15 of all abilities, training from 5pm weeknights with games from 8.45am on Saturdays," Mr Cowell said.

Players are also wanted for the 2020/21 season for both senior and junior competitions.

The Companion Group now in Daylesford

“What I really love is matching staff to clients – it’s a kind of alchemy. When the HEN Companion Group director Paul Sherry packed up his desk in March to go into isolation at home, little did he know what a match is right one doesn’t feel like they are working, and the other doesn’t feel like they are being served. Independence becomes suddenly achievable with the right profound effect the COVID-19 virus would have upon his life.

“I enjoyed working in Geelong, but I always dreamt of a quiet place in the country. However my role was busy and hands-on, I needed to be on the spot to solve problems and take care of the day to day running of the business. I saw myself needing to reside in Geelong indefinitely.”

After COVID landed, Paul spent several weeks coordinating the business from his living room, often having to adopt entirely new work practices.

“Meeting face to face is important to me. When Geelong went into Stage 3, catching up in person became impossible and I found myself having to embrace technology more. I learnt how to conduct remote meetings via webcam, to use messaging and other programs to maintain communication with our workforce and clients.”

Then, something occurred to him. With the right tools and an internet connection, he could operate the business from just about anywhere. The dream of that quiet place in the country began to gestate. A regular visitor to Daylesford, with his partner Samantha, Paul decided to make the tree change, found a house and is now ready to extend his business to the region.

The Companion Group is a National Disability Insurance Scheme registered disability, aged care and mental health service provider. Paul formed The Companion Group in 2015 after spending several years as a disability support worker. He found the work very rewarding, but was often frustrated that he couldn’t achieve some of the things he set out to do.

“I formed The Companion Group out of a desire to create independence; independence for myself, clients and support workers. I also wanted to create some diversity in the marketplace. I enjoy alternative lifestyles myself and found it a shame that many people engaging a social service were offered only mainstream options.”

In Geelong, the business has about 40 staff looking after approximately 350 clients. The youngest client is just five and the oldest is a man in his 80s who lives in a nursing home and just likes someone to visit to share a cuppa and play cards.

The business has been very successful, and Paul is now ready to bring it home to Daylesford.

“I guess what we are doing is something similar to Geelong but perhaps a more boutique model. We want to work individually with people in town to help them achieve their goals with our expertise, people who like to dream like we do.”

Paul is also keen to employ people to work with clients and believes some of those formerly in areas like hospitality would be perfectly suited to the role.

The Companion Group’s service assists people with their daily life. It might be as basic as helping them shower and have breakfast in the morning, or it might be as complex as helping someone who wants to return to study or work, or even engage for the first time in the workplace. All ages and abilities are welcome.

“We work to achieve goals and work in conjunction with specialists such as speech and occupational therapists. It is real hands-on stuff and we know how to make a difference to a client’s life.”

“For example, if a young person has autism traits, we will be doing things to help create some social muscle for them such as going into busy areas, learning how to order, how to make eye contact, or just wait for things. It is all good learning and, of course, respite for the parents. Assisting people with therapeutic exercise is also very common.”

Clients of The Companion Group get to choose what, how and when their services operate. “We are very pro-choice in terms of our clients. They get to choose who they want to work with and have control over their rosters and payments. We value choice and control and individual self-expression.”

With Geelong operations ticking over well, Paul and Samantha wish to offer the service to Daylesford, but not simply as an extension to Geelong. “We want our service to be invested in Daylesford, to do something specifically for Daylesford, and for Daylesford to feel like it has its own disability, aged care and mental health service.

We also wish to employ locally. Unlike other industries, employment opportunities in an essential service are entirely unaffected by COVID. We can offer training, great conditions and the opportunity to profoundly change lives.”

“Only yesterday I got a lovely text message with a photo from one of our staff and one of our clients and they were on the top of the You Yangs. They had finally climbed them, and I couldn’t tell you who had the bigger smile on their face. That is the reward for me.”

All in all, not just another brick in the wall

D

ON'T read any further if you think bricks are boring. Me? I’m a passionate blockhead, the person you’ll see standing in the street of a Goldfields town on a rainy day staring up at an ornate chimney built in the late 1800s.

It’s one of the bonuses of COVID-19 restrictions, that’s right - pounding the pavements of my neighborhood and checking out chimneys. It’s so touching to see that this often underestimated part of a building, whose job it is to expel filthy smoke, has been designed and built with such grace and beauty. You really only need a stack of bricks about ten courses high for a functioning chimney, but once upon a time a chimney was a brickie’s pride and joy.

Exposed to extreme heat and cold - the chimneys I mean, not the brickies, these towers of wood-fired clay blocks needed to remove all toxic gases from the house, thus saving the inhabitants from death by suffocation, or worse. (An ill-mortared brick could potentially fall down the inside of the chimney, upsetting the ladies having tea.)

Bricks made in Melbourne were available in many colours but had to be used judiciously. You couldn’t just slap a Hoffman’s pale cream next to a Prussian blue in any old willy-nilly fashion. This would suggest a lack of forethought, apathy, or dare I say it – contempt!

One can only imagine how ludicrous a motley free-for-all would look on the summit of Malmsbury’s Birthday Villa or the Red Brick Hall in Kyneton. A good designer of the late Victorian period (1875-1901) would create a restrained, yet dignified bichromatic pattern that stayed true to the rules of symmetry. The Queen Anne style (1895-1910) featured more complex roof forms and like the bungalows to follow, the chimneys of these buildings were often embellished with one or two terracotta pots. Pretty bohemian, hey?

I saw one chimney that reminded me of one of Leigh Sales’ blouses, as it sported a vertical zip feature on a pebbledash background. Further investigation revealed this style as Edwardian (1901-WWI).

Of course, any course of bricks looking a bit fancier than a weekend hobbyist’s would cost money. And where did the money come from? Gold, of course!

Not digging for it, that was for the grubby desperados, but the smarty pants professionals who serviced them. The shovel merchants and publicans who diligently stashed their shillings as each new adventurer arrived in town to stock up on supplies and boast, whisper or weep over a cold one.

Sure, many of us are weeping over not being able to share a cold one at the moment, but we can still sniff around the streets. Next time you’re undertaking your pandemic-permitted exercise, walking through town, head down, facing the gutter and lamenting the state of the universe, glance up for a moment or two and admire the practical and sometimes fancy structures that allow us to keep warm in winter.

PS. I’m not telling you where I spotted these ones in the pictures, you’ll have to hunt them out yourselves.

Creswick rental market booming in COVID

IGGIN & Scott's Creswick property manager Melissa Johnson said she was finding it hard to keep up with rental enquiries, with a lot coming from Melbourne.

"I have been really busy but I need more landlords to rent their houses with us so we can service the enquiry. Before COVID hit, I had a lot of properties that were under $300 per week and I had four left on the market at around the late $300 per week.

"Now we have none. Everything that goes on the market is immediately snapped up and although not officially, anecdotally the rental returns have increased by around 30 per cent since the beginning of the year in the town.

“I came back from leave on March 30 and expected to have nothing to do but it was just insane. It was just crazy busy. I've got one property in Creswick available at the moment and those tenants vacate next week. The enquiry on that has just been over the top, I can't keep up. And it's people from Melbourne, Ballarat and Bendigo.

They all just want to move this way."

Melissa said on the commercial side of things, she had had two lots of interest recently in a Creswick building. The former Pascoe’s hardware shop and residence is being developed into a business hub for Creswick with 10 spaces of which three are leased and with plenty of interest in the others. This building has been sitting on the market for a while and didn't really have a lot of enquiry but now people calling almost every day.

"Over in Clunes, I have leased another commercial space that is going to be a massage and healing business, which will be great for the town. Although there are restrictions now, people are looking to next year, trying to figure out what sort of business they could run in the Central Highlands, so they can make the move.

“Even my husband, who said he never wanted to move to the country and has been commuting from our Bacchus Marsh home to the city for work, has discovered he doesn’t have to be at work every day and we are now considering moving back up here, where I am originally from."

United Nations here in Central Highlands

HERE ain’t such a thing as a free lunch, the old saying goes.

Now, while there may be free lunches, and dinners, for those in need during COVID-19, one group is offering a free boost for high school and university students in these tough times.

Volunteers from the not-for-profit United Nations Youth Victoria, pictured right, saw the damaging long-term impact of a lack of contact for regional students with universities and educational programs and so they fired up online help.

Regional road trips, which began last year, have moved online to offer free educational content. Model United Nations meetings are also run by the group.

Two-person teams may compete in model UNs up to national level, with a Victorian team winning the Australian championship last year.

Rose Bourke, who comes from the Geelong area, is regional director of the program. She tells The Local that it covers global and foreign affairs, international relations, politics and policy, and features outstanding speakers such as former Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr. “He will speak about opportunities in policy and politics from his experience as New South Wales premier. He has invaluable experience in passing on what can be gained from working in the field of international relations and politics.”

Rose, who’s almost 20, began working as a facilitator for UN Youth Victoria two years ago and puts in 10-15 hours a week, away from her day job as a high school tutor in legal studies, politics and English.

“We offer a forum for students that empowers them and gives them a knowledge of world affairs, public speaking, negotiating and diplomacy skills.”

Regional students across the state can take part in the Model UN. So far over 300 have registered and competed.

“We have had grateful feedback from teachers and students, showing that the students have been kept engaged. This is now particularly important because many students are doing it hard studying online. We want to make it as lively and enjoyable as possible.” But there is a difficulty in involving overworked teachers.

“We do see a potential for regional engagement.” She says that historically her organisation has been able to engage with students in central Victoria with the UN model and public speaking.

Nationally, UN Youth Australia educates over 7000 young Australians each year, with a focus on conferences, competitions and international tours for secondary school students.

It works with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on the Australian Youth Representative to the United Nations program and aims to use young leaders’ vision and passion to bring about meaningful change. It has more than 700 volunteers, aged 16 to 25, and says it is one of the only organisations brave enough to empower young people with skills in education, design, leadership, organisation, diplomacy and in negotiating to execute their vision.

Although the educational content and model UNs are free, the Global Affairs Forum, which went online on August 28, does cost $20, but there are bursaries for regional students. This forum is on Zoom and offers speakers, a panel, networking opportunities, a Q&A session and presentations from universities.

Hundreds of students took part in last year’s “fantastic” road trip, she says. This year it goes online in October. Online information is available at UN Youth Victoria.

Working against coronavirus together

T

HE outstanding local success in containing the coronavirus pandemic can be attributed in no small part to the cooperation and sacrifice of local residents as well as the professionalism and hard work of Central Highlands Rural Health throughout Daylesford, Kyneton, Creswick, Trentham and Clunes, CEO Maree Cuddihy says.

"In just a few short months, the health service created two new Respiratory Assessment Clinics to provide local residents with free coronavirus screenings. In a true community partnership, construction of both facilities was supported by many local building suppliers and tradies, who generously donated their products and services.

"This allowed the community to quickly receive what soon became a truly essential local service. Central Highlands Rural Health is supported by specialist infection control staff who provide our organisation with expert guidance."

Erin Lowe is one of those infection control experts. She has previously worked against the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa and started her nursing career on the infectious diseases ward at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

"I was immediately fascinated by some exotic diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, measles and Dengue fever. I then completed a Masters in Public Health and Tropical Medicine. I was fortunate to travel to Tanzania as part of my university course and my experience in a Masai hospital sparked a passion to help others.

"In 2015 I jumped at the opportunity to go to West Africa and work in Ebola treatment units. I was in Sierra Leone and Liberia for nine months working in various roles including providing direct patient care to Ebola patients as the head nurse of an Ebola treatment unit. I was also lead trainer for all staff working in the red zone of an Ebola treatment unit. It was then I realised I wanted to specialise in infection control and so I undertook further postgraduate study."

In 2016 Erin was chosen for an internship at the World Health Organisation in Geneva for three months working with the Infection Prevention and Control Global Unit. During that time, she worked on training resources in Infection Prevention and Control for the West African countries most impacted by Ebola.

Erin brings her experience to the current COVID pandemic by offering locals some important advice. "It’s important to get tested if you have any symptoms, no matter how mild they are. Taking the test provides you and your family with peace of mind – which is priceless."

The Good Earth If you put a spoonful of garden soil under a microscope you would find it contains millions of living organisms and particles of minerals that have taken thousands of years to form.

If plants grow well in that soil it could mean that at least 15 elements have been freed in precise amounts to support plant growth.

Soil fertility is complex and because one soil type grows one particular type of plant to perfection, it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t necessarily make it right for other plant families.

Soil is basically made up of two major ingredients: mineral matter, varying from microscopic clay particles to gravel, and humus - the decayed or dead remains of plant or animal life.

Usually, the top 30cm or so of soil contains the innumerable millions of organisms that convert the fundamental ingredients into the fertile, or infertile, blend we know as soil.

To be fertile it must contain sufficient sources and reserves of the most important elements for plant growth especially nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. But to become useful to plants they must become soluble, dissolving a little at a time into the water in the soil. This is performed primarily by useful soil organisms, each with its own specific duties and all drawing energy from the soil and living in a fiercely competitive world that usually prevents one group monopolising all others.

Another fertility factor is the way in which the soil particles cling together. Where plenty of humus is present, the minute clay particles unite in small nodules that allow ready drainage of surplus water and permit free movement of air. This factor is most important to healthy and strong plant growth and rapid establishment of healthy, young feed roots.

Heavy clay soils usually result in oxygen starvation, reduced solubility of important plant nutrients and subsequent destruction of desirable soil organisms.

Under these conditions unwanted organisms soon get the upper hand, causing the plants to become weakened and diseased.

On the other hand, open sandy soil consists solely of large granules. Without this the soil suffers from water loss and the leeching of plant foods down and away from hungry and parched root systems. Obviously a suitably high organic content is important for any soil type, so make sure your garden soil is well stocked by regular mulching with an organic mulch material. Flower and vegetable beds should be wellworked between plantings with well-rotted organic compost or animal manure.

Poor soil can be made to produce good crops of perennials, flowers and vegetables by the careful use of manures and fertilisers. On most soils nutrients must be used for each succeeding crop if fertility is to be kept up, but it often takes several seasons to bring the ground to top condition.

Animal manures of all types are most useful in providing not only nutrients for the current crop but a surplus for future ones as well. One of the features of animal and other organic manures is that the nutrients remain available to the plants over a long period and so can keep them growing throughout the whole time the crop is in the ground. Often, however, animal manures may not be as well balanced as could be desired, being rich in nitrogen for producing strong leaf growth, but low in phosphate so necessary for producing strong root systems.

Better results are usually obtained from a mix of animal manures and fertilisers.

Fertilisers usually provide their nutrients immediately, so where they are to be used together, the animal manure is best dug in several weeks before planting. That is except in the case of slow-release fertilisers, which do not burn the plants, and can be worked into the soil around the hole where the new plant is to go. Fertilisers should generally be applied after planting when the plants have had sufficient to time become established.

F JENNY Morrison can do it, then I can. And no, I don't mean sleep with Scotty from marketing. Or head out to buy some jigsaw puzzles.

Jenny, or Mrs Morrison as I should call her, or maybe The First Lady, was on the news last week telling people to make sure they kept up their health checks. It was part of Women's Health Week so a bit slanted towards the ladies. Well, women.

Anyway, I am going to use this spot here to broaden the message. Make sure you keep all your health checks happening.

Yes, it is pretty easy to let them slide. I mean, coronavirus, what better excuse to put off your pap smear or your skin check. It used to be "I have a bit of a cold, better stay home" but no-one has colds anymore because we all wear masks and keep our distance. Even if you did manage to get a cold you can't be outside anyway. Coughing is a sin, as is sneezing. There is only one OK way to expel air from the body and that's farting. Although, with those sewer checks happening...

Anyway, back to checks. Yes, it would be easy to put them off because you don't want to go where sick people hang out - doctors' surgeries, hospitals etc. But if you think about it clearly, where would you rather be, your local supermarket, or your doctor's? At least the latter knows hygiene. (Sorry, I know supermarket staff are working hard but you can't stop shopper stupidity. I buy the weekend newspapers and when I take them home I Glen 20 the hell out of the cover and the back. Surely the only places anyone could have touched. Well, that theory went out the window last weekend when I watched a woman thumb through the first 15 or so pages of the Herald Sun and then walk off - leaving the paper on the stand! WTF? And don't get me started on people fondling fruit.)

Sorry, honestly back to checks this time. For some reason 2020 was my time for everything so during this pandemic I have had a pap test (don't have to go back for five years), a mammogram (all clear), skin check (no worries), an asthma clinic (under such good control the doctor said maybe go off the preventer and see how that works out - but seeing coronavirus could be a tad annoying for those with respiratory complaints I let that through to the keeper) and a colonoscopy (see you in five years too).

OK, being honest, I did put off the colonoscopy for a few months when everything was, you know, hitting the fan, but decided to bite the bullet, and it happened between the two lockdowns. I was going to leave it longer but thought that it would be pretty sad to survive this pandemic and then get knocked off by something that a simple check would have avoided. I guess that's the thought all the time really.

We are very lucky to live in a country where so many checks and balances keep us healthy and upright. So, if you can, take up the offer. Sure, they can be a bit inconvenient and a little worrying but I tell you what, when you get the all clear from the colonoscopy and then you get those dainty sandwiches, after what seems like an eternity of fasting, it is worth it.

Oh, last bit. Thanks for the calls over the past weeks, especially from the person who I have not talked to for about 13 years saying they were just up for a chat, wondering if I am standing for council. No, I am not. But all the best to those who are. Let the games begin.

Kyle’s Rant

A

FEW months ago, a TV advertisement popped up with a little girl who shrieked at her mother for using excess water to pre-wash the dishes before they went into the dishwasher.

Now for years, I have pre-washed the gunk off the pots, pans and plates but since this advert hit our screens, Donna has taken it upon herself to ban the pre-wash. She does scrap the contents into the food waste, but there is always something left stuck on the dishes.

And over the past few weeks, I have noticed the decline in cleanliness. It started with the wine glasses being a little foggy, and then small grains of food appeared, followed by the plates not having that same freshly washed sparkle. I think the trouble is that we are all eating at home more, doing a lot more experimental cooking and using ingredients that perhaps pre-pandemic never made it into the mix.

So I did some investigation on the offending appliance which led me directly to its filter, which was filthy. That got my full attention so I then ran the dishwashing apparatus through a small cycle and it suddenly stopped with a long intermittent beeping siren, sounding like I had just broken into a bonded warehouse on the docks.

I then turned to Google to try and decipher this particular fault code which turned out to be a blockage. Further investigations led me to discover three straws logged in the trap which was blocking the waterflow from the pump. Problem solved I thought.

The next day, laden with a plethora of plates covered with the residue of several speculative menu items from the night before's festivities, I cranked the beast into life, waiting with bated breath for the one hour and 42-minute cycle to sparkle my dishes.

This was only met with disappointment, as I opened up the treasure chest of platters to once again reveal spotted glassware and dishes. At this point I declared war and did something completely foreign to me, I reached for the instruction manual.

I was delighted to find many other things can go wrong with these mystical dish cleaners, and better yet, the arms can also be removed and cleaned. That's when I found huge lemon pips and lots of anaemic-looking enoki mushrooms hanging from the holes on the arms where the water usually comes out.

After a scrubbing session that felt like I was water blasting a large mining vehicle, I finally pressed my dishwasher back into service and it now spits out sparkling clean dishes just like on the picture of the dishwasher tablet packet. But really, the curious thing is how the straws and pips and enoki mushroom ended up in there. We've had none in the house for many months. Rinse your plate, rant over…

ICP is the world's leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture. It was established in 1974 by photographer Cornell Capa and it has chronicled wars, social movements, and disasters to build a historical archive for future generations.

The exhibition, called The Pandemic Project, was inspired by the ICP's founding principle to champion "concerned photography" - socially and politically minded images that can educate and change the world.

Sandy was funded to work on her series by Creative Victoria and Regional Arts Victoria as part of the Sustaining Creative Workers Initiative.

The photo is of Lauren Kemp and her daughter Beatrix being tested for the virus by Australian Defence Force personnel at Kyneton.

Lauren told Sandy she felt like she was in a war zone rather than the Macedon Ranges.

"I sometimes feel as though I’ve woken up in a parallel universe like a sci-fi movie, it really feels like that." Her story is one of many people who have been adversely affected. Her husband lost his job at the start of the pandemic and with two small children at home, she is anxious about what the future holds.

Hepburn Z-NET is a collaboration with the Hepburn Shire Council, Hepburn Wind, local sustainability groups, and local citizens. The group has delivered a website that’s easy to navigate and useful for locals. Organised around Homes, Farms, Schools, Work, Visit (Tourism) and Community sectors the website has tailored information on emissions and programs that can help residents cut CO2 and their living costs.

“We wanted to create a user-friendly website that brought together the incredible work already happening in the shire and some of the technical detail stemming from the Hepburn Z-NET Community Transition Plan.

The website aims to be a living resource, full of existing and emerging programs, projects and resources that anyone can use,” said Taryn Lane, Manager of Hepburn Wind.

The Community Transition Plan was published in 2019 and is the backbone of the Z-NET partnership, offering a breakdown of the shire's existing emissions and approaches to reach zero. The CTP and various other Z-NET resources are available on the website.

Council nominations close September 22

ICTORIANS from all backgrounds are being encouraged to stand as candidates when nominations for local government elections open this week.

Minister for Local Government Shaun Leane said that serving on council was an opportunity for people to represent their community, play a role in Victoria’s recovery from the coronavirus pandemic and deliver changes that can make a real difference to people’s lives.

Candidate nominations will be open for six days from Thursday, September 17 until midday on Tuesday, September 22. The elections on Saturday, October 24 will be held by postal vote and are expected to be Victoria’s biggest ever, with more than 4.5 million voters enrolled and 2000-plus candidates expected to contest.

Updated Safe Campaigning Guidelines for regional Victoria under COVID-19 Stage 3 restrictions will permit letterboxing and handing out leaflets from September 14 with certain conditions.

Candidates must not enter another person’s premises or congregate with others at letterboxes and 1.5 metres of physical distancing must be maintained where possible.

They must maintain hand hygiene when handling documents to be given to the public and cannot enter someone else’s home or invite others into their home to coordinate this activity.

People putting campaign flyers/material in letterboxes should carry a small bottle of alcohol-based hand sanitiser to ensure they can maintain hand hygiene when away from home. They must wear a face covering when they leave their house, unless their have a lawful reason for not doing so. Candidates must not carpool when doing this activity.

Handing out leaflets is allowed but candidates must not hand out leaflets at public gatherings. Hand hygiene must be maintained.

In metropolitan Melbourne candidates and campaign team members will be permitted to engage in campaigning activities in the ward in which they are running for office for up to two hours a day, while following the directions of the Chief Health Officer.

All candidates for the 2020 elections must complete the Local Government Candidate Training Course before they nominate. The online course closes on Tuesday, September 22.

REG Thompson and his wife Jo moved to the region 10 years ago and quickly bought Daylesford Cottage Directories. They then purchased Daylesford Accommodation Booking Services (DABS) and combined the two into Daylesford Accommodation Escapes.

About three years ago, Greg started Hepburn Earthworks as a side business to look after his managed properties, using the equipment for emergency repairs like urgent drainage. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Now the business employs a couple of locals and because we are not huge, we can easily adapt to changes and attend emergencies for our clients," Greg said. "All our gear is only three years old and it's all Caterpillar equipment. We don't operate 24/7 so it's all in great condition and we make sure we take good care and look after it."

Hepburn Earthworks' equipment includes a five-tonne Posi-Track bobcat with soft tracks - for maintaining as much grass as possible, and a three and a half tonne fully-enclosed cab excavator - ideal for trenching and digging auger holes for foundations and trees.

"And then we also have a dual hydraulic roller which allows us to do compaction on driveways. In terms of clearing blocks of land, along with the usual chainsaw equipment, we also have a fire tender (to carry water) set-up so that we can do burn-offs safely.

"We cover a lot territory, from Castlemaine to Ballarat, and over to Hanging Rock. The longest driveway we have constructed was two and a half kilometres which involved crossing a stream and removing several trees!"
