Plenty of attitude for those ageing in Clunes

HE Clunes Senior Citizens Centre in Fraser Street had been central to the needs of its older residents since the early 1970s. Sadly 2020 and the restrictions on social gatherings brought about the dissolution of the centre and a 50-year chapter of community history came to a close.

The building, with its range of meeting rooms suitable for a whole range of intellectual, physical and artistic pursuits lay empty and silent.

Making the most of a Victorian roadtrip

I

T WAS Sunday, February 7. Work was done for the day so we decided to take a road trip around a little of Victoria. Be those people who filled an Esky on the way.

We packed a small bag each, with the thought you can always buy what you forget. That works well unless you are Kyle and forget to pack a right shoe. Oh well.

We also packed laptops, just in case borders closed, or we wanted to stay away a little longer and needed to jump into work. Sunday nights are also the time the printer can call and say "page 10 is missing".

And then, with no particular thought in mind, we headed to Nagambie - just a couple of hours away. We made it an hour into the drive before hunger kicked in, so we stopped at Heathcote and a really quaint business called, quite aptly, Heathcote House. We opted for hot chocolates and Devonshire teas - with really good homemade scones to be loaded with jam and cream. Tip - if you ever find yourself sharing a Devonshire tea with Kyle, do not put the jam on first. He goes the opposite way and is very generous with his serves. That is, no cream left for me, or you.

Also for sale at Heathcote House is great vintage clothing and cool jewellery. And there's an upmarket BnB if you feel like staying over. Oh, there is also a cute kelpie Beau who, from behind a fence, will clean your fingers better than any sanitiser.

Full, we drove on to Nagambie and found very good accommodation at the Nagambie Waterfront Motel. We finally filled our Esky, mostly with wine and ice, and chilled out on our verandah watching cyclists and walkers go by. Nice.

Dinner was an easy decision, the only place open was the Nagambie Rowing Club. Kyle went for the chicken parma, which was fine, but I felt like going more upmarket and chose the linguine, prawns and oyster mushrooms in a lobster cream sauce with white wine, fennel and aged parmesan. Hmmm. The prawns were nice.

The next morning we had breakfast at Harry's. We chose it because we had spotted another place to stay - with an infinity pool. We called the number on the brochure and the manager told us she was busy having breakfast, at Harry's, and to call later. We never called but we did enjoy our eggs and bacon, except for the bloke seated behind us who sneezed about five times, into his hand. Ewww.

We did end up with a pool that night, after we headed to Mitchelton Wines just down the road. We were just going for a visit but decided the hotel looked very enticing and booked on the spot along with a complimentary and comprehensive wine tasting. It was too cold for the pool but the restaurant was very inviting and the food was amazing - after a funny start with an entree of baked haloumi and strawberries, topped with a sweet creamy foam. Interesting.

We slept well that night, maybe the Mitchelton wines helped, although I must say I was pretty unimpressed being woken at 8am by a helicopter landing what seemed on top of the hotel. My first thought was "air ambulance" and that would be fine, of course, but on checking with staff they thought it was more likely the owner flying in.

Now I am not sure if that is true but owner Gerard "Gerry" Thomas Ryan OAM is an Australian businessman, investor, racehorse owner and sports enthusiast. And according to the Financial Review Rich List 2018 his net worth was assessed at A$487 million and he is Australia's 176th richest person. He is also the owner and founder of Jayco Australia. He and his son Andrew bought Mitchelton Wines from Lion Nathan. So, if anyone has a helicopter, it would be him. I wonder if he would like to buy a newspaper?

From Nagambie we headed to Echuca. I like Echuca. It has the historic bit with the paddlesteamers and then the real town with some great shops. We usually stay in town, near The American Hotel which is quite funky, but Kyle decided he would like waterfront digs again so we stayed at the Moama Riverside Holiday Park in an executive cabin right on the Murray River.

It was really nice. The river had a few boats going up and down, including some of the bigger houseboats. Luckily our cabin was right in front of the public wastewater pumping station so we got to see them quite up front and personal. We had a barby one night and ordered delivery pizza the other. Sadly there was another Moama Caravan Park so our pizza arrived a little later than hoped for, but still had some warmth in it. And there is always the microwave.

Kyle had a great walk one day, all the way to Victoria and back to NSW, while I made do with the one-minute drive to the Moama Bowls Club where they still have genuine 1970s prices. A huge glass of white wine for under $7. Not sure how their punters would go in the local pubs back in the Central Highlands.

Anyway, after four nights away, we decided it was time to head home - and who knew a lockdown was just around the corner? But we are keen to get out there again, try a few new places, meet some more interesting people and possibly run a last minute travel story on an empty full page after the Victorian Government pulls its COVID-19 "Stay Safe, Stay Open" advert. Just sayin'...

To get the ball rolling RSPCA CEO Dr Liz Walker chatted with Donna Kelly about the benefits of having a pet at work.

Donna: How does having a pet in the workplace help morale, mental health?

Liz: Animals are integral to the lives of Victorians – we have 6.7 million pet animals in Victoria, and around 24 million pets in Australia. That’s a lot of animal lovers. The research says pets are good for people. They bring people together during times of joy, and times of sadness. We know that pets can help improve our quality of life including reducing stress, improving health, reducing loneliness and providing companionship.

Research has shown that owning a pet can have a number of psychological benefits: Those who have pets have been shown to have higher self-esteem; pet owners report less depression and appear to cope with grief, stress and loss better than non-pet owners; pets enhance social connectedness and social skills and are great conversation starters and pets are also great caregivers. They keep us company when we’re sick or feeling down. They can make us feel safe while we’re home alone and they keep an eye on the house while we’re out.

Research has also shown that owning a pet can have a number of physical health benefits too, including: increased cardiovascular health (lower blood pressure, lower triglycerides and in men, lower cholesterol); and increased physical activity. Dogs especially help us get out and enjoy the outdoors while getting some regular exercise.

They are great motivators and personal trainers, never wanting to miss a training session no matter the weather and fewer visits to the doctor.

Growing up with a dog (and other pets to a lesser extent) during infancy may help to strengthen the immune system and may reduce the risk of allergies.

Donna: Would you recommend a pet in the workplace?

Liz: I think dogs can be a wonderful addition to a workplace environment, for the dogs and people alike. It is a great way to socialise your dog and give them companionship throughout the day, and a great source of wellbeing and satisfaction amongst staff.

However, there are a few things people should consider before bringing their dogs into an office. Not every dog is suited to this opportunity, and the onus is on the owner to ensure their dog is comfortable and prepared to spend a day in an office environment. For example, a dog who is happy in an office would be relaxed and comfortable in busy environments and meeting new people. An anxious or superenergetic dog may not be as suited to spend the day in an office and may be much happier at home.

Owners should ensure that their dog is adequately house-trained, is wearing a collar and identification, has received all relevant vaccinations and is on an effective regime of flea and parasite control.

Animals should be supervised at all times when in the workplace and due diligence should be done to ensure the office is free from hazards or chewable items that might be picked up by a cheeky dog. It’s a good idea to have a specific area/bed for the dogs to sit – this also helps with hygiene and cleaning.

Make sure you take your dog for frequent toilet breaks and a walk throughout the day to help them burn off any extra energy. It’s also worth checking to see if anyone else plans on bringing their dog into work that day to make sure that any interaction is managed if necessary.

Donna: What pets work best?

Liz: Every animal is different. If you see people take their dogs into the office, chances are they have been really well-socialised and have been exposed to a wide variety of different environments enabling them to feel comfortable in new situations.

However, it really does depend on each animal’s temperament. Owners should make a decision based on their animal’s unique needs. My advice would be to start with short visits to the office to see how an animal copes, increasing the time in the office as the animal becomes used to the environment. Or stopping office visits if the office is just not where they feel happy.

As an example, I know Will’s (Belle Property Daylesford's Will Walton), prior pooch, Ziggy. Ziggy loved being in the office – he even spent time in my office when I looked after him many years ago. Ziggy loved the people and attention and would snooze through meetings after making sure he’d said hello to everyone.

In contrast, my current dog, Princess Esther The Great, is a homebody. She will come to the office and sit quietly but her ears are back and she hunches low when people come to visit me. She finds the interruptions and other animals that we sometimes see quite overwhelming. These signs tell me that this is not her preferred place, so in her case, it is better for her to stay at home. It’s fair to say she has enjoyed the COVID-19 working from home regime.

Celebrating tomato season in Central Victoria

Growing all sorts of heirloom veggies, herbs and berries for local food boxes, restaurants, markets and produce shops, producer Florian Hofinger, pictured inset, says his farm is also off-grid passive solar "which means no fridges, just good old-fashioned 'picked fresh that morning' kind of produce".

"Tomato season has just arrived here in Central Victoria and this is the first year that we have used a poly tunnel which essentially gives the plants a security blanket for those late season frosts and cooler days that surprise us throughout the typically turbulent Victorian weather.

"But given that it is a different growing environment than the open paddock there is lots to learn and so that keeps things challenging, which is a good thing. The season is going great guns thus far.

"We grow about 50 different heirloom varieties and my favourite is rouge de marmande. There are about 500 plants in the poly and another 400 outside, all certified organic and using mostly our own seed.

"Our tip to lovers of tomatoes is to plant with compost and pot ash and to never place in the fridge. We enjoy our toms sun ripened, quartered, with a pinch of good quality salt and pepper and a splash of local olive oil. Our mate's olive oil, Beats Martini, is the best around town."

Magnificent red volcanic soil at Dairy Flat Farm

N AN easterly facing slope of 38 lush acres of magnificent red volcanic soil lies Dairy Flat Farm, a sustainable growing facility dedicated to regenerative agricultural practices.

It consists of five acres of productive vegetable, herb and cut flower gardens, three large hoop houses, a large barn, a 300-tree orchard, 250-tree olive grove and five-acre vineyard planted with chardonnay and pinot noir. The farm inspires and provides much that is on the menus, beverage selections and floristry at Lake House Daylesford, the Wolf-Taskers' flagship hotel, restaurant and spa.

The farm has planted 25 different varieties of tomatoes this season including 75 per cent old heirloom varieties, with the remaining 25 per cent being more common varieties. From the big petula and the truss cherry moscatel through to the reen zebra, they have had an extraordinary season.

Currently they are harvesting around 60 kilograms of tomatoes a week, mostly for the Lake House kitchen, with around 20 kilograms available for purchase at the Daylesford Sunday Market weekly.

The indeterminate varieties are being grown on strings, with determinates (bush varieties like romas) on the ground. About 90 per cent of the tomatoes are grown in poly tunnels with the other 10 per cent grown outdoors on trellises which enables easy harvesting and pruning from both sides. The team at Dairy Flat practises organic farming methods including an integrated pest management program using predatory insects.

Each year the team at Lake House create a dish that heroes tomatoes, an homage to the season. But for home meals, farm supervisor Glen Ockwell, pictured inset, has a favourite tomato dish stemming from time spent living overseas - simply a tomato cut in half and rubbed on lightly toasted good bread with some olive oil. It is not about eating the texture of the tomato, it is about getting the flavour of the tomato on the bread. Glen feels that when the team has worked so hard for that unique flavour, it needs nothing more.

Uncovering the history of the Convent Gallery

T

HE Presentation Sisters, officially the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, are a religious institute of Roman Catholic women founded in Cork, Ireland, by a pioneer of Catholic education Nano Nagle in 1775. Historically, the Sisters have focused their energies on creating and staffing schools to educate young women.

The first Presentation convent in Australia opened at Richmond, Tasmania in 1866 and as the need for Catholic education in the new colony of Victoria grew, pioneering Presentation Sisters responded by establishing convents and schools there including Daylesford.

By the turn of the 1890s the order took possession of an empty house on the slopes of Wombat Hill, first built in 1862 for gold warden and magistrate James Daley. It was named the Holy Cross Convent and Boarding School for Girls and was opened in 1891 with 27 students. Over the course of 80 years with renovations and additions of extra rooms and buildings they turned it into what visitors encounter today as the Convent Gallery. Some 50 years since the remaining four nuns moved to a new convent next to St Peter's Church in Duke Street, the memory of the Presentation Sisters order still infuses its atmosphere. And owner Tina Banitska has made sure the many stories associated with their tenure are not lost to time.

In fact, one of the positives to come out of the 2020 lockdown, when attractions like the Convent Gallery had to shut their doors, was to give staff Marija Fina and Rebecca Walker the chance to properly collate the various strands of the sisters' history, their cloistered lives and ultimately their legacy.

“What I took away from the project,” says Marija, “was a real admiration for these women who were living in a time when women didn’t have a lot of rights and many just got married. Perhaps for some women (joining an order) was a way of actually having more control in their lives, a form of empowerment in a way.”

This certainly seemed to be the case for Mother John Byrne - the woman who established the local order and served as its first Reverend Mother or leader.

Originally from Kildare, Ireland she arrived in Melbourne in 1873 and set about establishing convents in Wagga Wagga in 1874 and Elsternwick in 1881 before heading to Daylesford. Accompanied by sisters Alphonsus Southwell, Michelle O’Sullivan, Gertrude Donaghy, Teresa Bourke and Angela Sullivan, Mother Byrne was determined to bring culture, education and the arts to the Daylesford community.

Sister Sebastian Lardi, later to become Reverend Mother serving from 1923 to 1928, remembered her as: “A dignified and gracious lady and aristocrat to her fingertips. A woman of great breadth of mind, hospitable, well educated, strong and in the liberal tradition of Nano Nagle, she had a vision and the courage to carry out her plans.” After Daylesford, Mother John established convents in Rutherglen, Chiltern and Inglewood before passing away in 1906. In 1897 Alphonsus Southwell was made the Daylesford Convent Mother Superior and remained in that position until Sister Joseph Masterton took over in 1914. She was followed in turn by Sister Alphonsus in 1917.

(When a woman officially entered the novitiate - becoming a novice in a religious order, they would receive a name, such as a saint, to denote their new state in life.

That is why many of the inducted nuns carry men's Christian names.)

Over the years, 106 women followed Mother Byrne into the Daylesford Convent.

And while the first eight years were difficult, by the end of 1901 the number of boarders were increasing and the order was prospering. The dormitory spaces were increased and the recollection of women who passed through there over the years opens a window to another time and place.

For example, Mary Buckley Sparks vividly describes the presence of Sister Christopher, a nun there in the years before WWII. “Sister Christopher glided about as though her feet were not on the ground. Head erect, taking in all as she went.” Or this recollection from Bernadette Cleary. “The nuns (were) remarkably competent, admirable women who instilled in me a lifetime love of learning.” To other girls, the women with their black full-length coverings were a source of great mystery. Monte Jenkins who was educated there in the 1920s recalled that she never saw the nuns out of their habit and the girls always imagined them as bald.

Former student and boarder from 1932 to 1941 Merlyn de Van der Schueren also offered these snapshots of life at the Holy Cross. "Sister Teresa: never gave up the old ‘habit’ and never gave up trying to turn Holy Cross girls into ladies. Sister Vincent: bent praying in the chapel. Mother Aloysius: a wonderful teacher and respected Reverend Mother. (And) The Presentation Sisters were women who gave their life to Christ. They were the true biblical holy women. They were holy, prayerful, hardworking, caring, happy and human.”

Wombat Forestcare wants VEAC answers

EMBERS of Wombat Forestcare are alarmed that the Victorian Government has ignored recommendations for a number of state forests from the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council.

Wombat Forestcare convenor Gayle Osborne said an investigation was requested by the Minister for the Environment in 2017 and completed in 2019.

"The government response is now nearly a year overdue. VEAC recommended that large areas of the Wombat, Mt Cole, Pyrenees and Wellsford state forests be converted to national, regional and conservation parks, to protect over 380 rare and threatened birds, mammals and plant species.

"How long do we have to wait for the Victorian Government to take environmental issues seriously? Victoria’s biodiversity strategy, Biodiversity 2037, has an objective to ‘Maintain and enhance a world-class system of protected areas’, yet we fail to see a commitment to this strategy.

"Recently, the Little Eagle, an inhabitant of the Wombat and other forest margins, was listed as a vulnerable species in Victoria. This classification means that the eagle is vulnerable to extinction, adding to a list of the state’s endangered species.

"In the forward to Biodiversity 2037, the Minister for the Environment, Lily D' Ambrosio wrote: 'Despite understanding the importance of our natural environment, not enough has been done to protect it from harm. Victoria's biodiversity is in decline' and 'The Victorian Government has an ambitious environmental agenda and is prioritising the care and protection of our natural environment.'

"We call on the minister to act on these commitments and protect the natural environments of the investigation area. At a time when more Victorians than ever are seeking to connect with nature for their health and wellbeing, we call on the Victorian Government to act on their policies regarding the critical role that Victoria's parks can play in encouraging healthier, more liveable, and more connected communities.

"The VEAC report was a rigorous scientific study with extensive community and stakeholder consultation and recommended converting 50,000 hectares of the Wombat State Forest to national, regional and conservation parks. Yet we are now faced with immediate threats to the VEAC recommendations with recently approved mining exploration licences and VicForests’ stated intention to resume logging."

In response to Wombat Forestcare's concerns Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said: "We know that stakeholders and local communities are keenly interested in the response to the VEAC report and we'll have more to say in due course."

Design with Indre Then the rains came down...

That was just when weather switched to feral Summer and our trees and garden beds were readying for their weather worn, parched faces.

So now we can leave our hoses coiled for just a little longer. Not that we rely on hoses in our garden, except to link our various networks of trickle irrigation to their nearest tap...and a couple of short lengths of those black ‘dribbly’ hoses to trickle around the base of isolated trees and shrubs.

It was nowhere near other area's massive downpours. But aided by the accompanying lower temperatures, it certainly helped top up our tanks and gives us time to catch our breath before the next wave of heat reaches us. Our gardens certainly appreciated the break.

So best take advantage of the damp, softened soil to prepare your plants for the real Summer weather by getting rid of any weeds and lightly raking or digging over the top soil to gain maximum soakage of any further rain. And be ready to spread mulch over the beds once you are sure the rains are over. Trees and shrubs in particular will appreciate a light dressing of an organic fertiliser at this stage as the present damp conditions will assist in its journey to the roots.

Don’t turn your back on your fruit trees, especially now at the end of their crops.

This is a critical time of the year for them as they are recovering from the stress of producing a heavy load of fruit and, at the same time, start storing up energy to see them through Winter and into Spring, and the next harvest.

Don’t rely on the rain or run-off from the rest of the garden. Give them good, soaking drinks by letting a hose run slowly into a shallow moat around their base.

Better still, encircle their drip line with a loop of trickle irrigation hose for a frequent session to ensure the soil is kept moist.

Roses should be allowed to rest now after their Spring/Summer burst of blooms, in readiness for their next bout in Autumn. Mulch the plants and ease up a little on the watering. Do not feed them at this time of year or you could encourage a burst of vigorous leaf growth at the cost of plentiful Autumn flowers.

Garden ornaments turning to rust

It seems that gardens, wherever you look, have turned to rusted metal as the theme for furniture or ornamentation, and artisans and garden stockists alike, are thriving on the boom.

And why not? Especially living, as we do, in a rural setting where the landscape is liberally dotted with rusting implements and easy to obtain bric-a-brac, rusted ornamentation is the logical and certainly fitting choice.

Our garden is liberally sprinkled with 'rustique' ornamentation - created, found, purchased and gifted over the 35 years we’ve been here. They range from an ornate wrought iron chaise longue down to pendant draught-horse shoes. But the piece-deresistance is the elegant wrought iron settlers-themed farmgate framed by a fastgrowing Renae climbing rose at our entrance, pictured. It was created for us by noted Daylesford sculptor/artist Stefan Nechwatal.

Bench parking

The humble park bench is invaluable for our appreciation of our landscape, be it solitary or social, exclusive or inclusive. It offers respite and a place for contemplation, social engagement, or not, as well as partaking of food, alone or shared.

Often the park bench is not an obvious statement. Not made for comfort, lounging or sleeping until recently. Its design beginnings were originally stone slabs in Italian Renaissance town plazas and used for markets and town meetings. They encouraged a sense of belonging and inclusion in town squares plus they offered shelter outside churches, from the weather or for the disadvantaged.

Socialising in a town square was now encouraged. It wasn't solely about making transactions in town.

Rustic stone and timber benches transformed into mass-produced cast iron benches and chairs during the Industrial Revolution. Cast iron was durable and cheap. Designs were still not made for comfort but became decorative with motifs depicting flora and fauna, when viewed empty and in situ. The fashion at this time was social parading in the towns.

Often straight backed, if a back was offered, narrow so you could perch but not sleep - chairs or benches were for support only. Add dividers or middle arm rests and you could be sure your stay is temporary.

Regardless of discomfort, the respite provided offered a welcome contemplation.

Many an idea has been thought from a bench. As many a problem has been solved.

Lovers are united in sharing a space and friends or strangers pass time, united by a bench. We have all noticed the dedication plaques displayed on particular benches.

These tend to invoke a sense of intrusion, perhaps of memory, reflection and ghosts?

The plaza at Harvard University has provided a 'new organisation of social space' by introducing Stoss hand-designed contemporary benches. These benches are ergonomic, allowing for multiple functions like stretching, playing or lounging.

This is made possible with 3D modelling and fabrication. It creates a new sense of community, reflecting broader societal changes toward a healthier, more inclusive public space.

Similar sentiments are seen in Italy by architect and yoga instructor Robyne Kassen with the ‘zero point’ bench.

Unire/Unite is an installation in Rome using the zero point benches. They are timber frames covered in ‘concrete canvas’ - concrete on the inside with canvas on the outside. The installation enables visitors to do yoga-inspired body positions to 'activate, strengthen and balance the mind and body'.

Today we are seeing our benches and public spaces reflecting our obsession with comfort, technology, health and social wellbeing. Regardless of the type of bench you find, I think the time of respite and peace found there is welcome, no matter the bodily position you must take up. Go forth and explore your nearest park bench.

Just sayin’...

Pick me, pick me

T'S Sunday morning, well, almost noon, and I have just decided to rewrite this column. I had one done and dusted but I thought about it

overnight and decided it was too gloomy. And one thing we don't need right now is gloomy. So here are some more upbeat things and thoughts.

First up is the "lawyer cat", pictured right, under Pick me. That Zoom meeting must be the funniest of the past 12 months. Just when you thought nothing more could surprise you from Zoom or Facetime or Google Meet, a lawyer turns up with a cat filter and even says "I am not a cat". I can watch that for hours. Well, minutes really but it is still funny.

I did go and look for the filter to use in my next VCPA meeting but apparently it is really old and can't be found anymore. And let's face it, like Bernie Sanders and his mittens, it will become passé pretty quickly.

Next up, today is Valentine's Day. Now we don't celebrate the day. As Kyle says: "We celebrate our love every day." Which is either very sweet or just a way out of buying flowers. My only real Valentine gift arrived in my letterbox when I lived in Japan, more than 30 years ago. A good friend had gone to the city - we lived in the country - and returned with a much coveted McDonald's burger and fries. I wasn't home so he shoved them into my letterbox along with a little card with a heart on it.

I discovered them about four hours later and yes, I ate the burger. The fries were a bit too soggy.

Kyle's and my most memorable Valentine's Day was when our Frankston home burnt down, well half of it. We battled to save the dogs, which we did, and then ended up in hospital in emergency. Our beds were separated but Kyle made such a fuss they moved things around so we could be side by side. Holding hands while sucking in oxygen. How romantic.

Finally, last week we had our first trip away in what seems like forever. Nothing amazing but a few days around Victoria, no plans, just wandering. It was really fun and lifted our spirits which, I must admit, have been a little down. We explored new places, had some great food, met interesting people and just wound down. It's amazing how quickly you can relax and more amazing that we have held onto that feeling after coming back home and even going into this short lockdown.

It also made us decide to start some travel planning. I know that is difficult but everyone needs something to look forward to. So we are going online and making bookings, that can be refunded of course, to places we want to see and people we want to catch up with. On the list so far, and probably in this order, are New South Wales, Queensland, New Zealand and Japan. I know we are still in a pandemic but I think for our mental state, it's time to start looking forward to life again. Just sayin'...

Kyle’s Rant

S YOU are probably aware, unless you have been under a rock somewhere, we have had another couple of recent slip-ups from the hotel quarantine.

Anyway I am here to catch you up. I suppose the guards can be forgiven for letting a nebuliser slip through the dragnet that is our hotel quarantine, and for those of us that wonder what such a machine does, I have done the research for you.

A nebuliser is a machine used to change liquid medication into a vapour that you can inhale. It works by pumping pressurised air through the liquid to form a fine mist, which can then be breathed in through a mask or mouthpiece.

That is, it pushes air through the liquid, which can include COVID-19 droplets, and vaporises it, so as the bug can hang around in small air particles for much longer than normal, so one and all can have a chance to inhale it. WTH. It beggars belief that after all this time, hard work and getting protocols in place one year after this all began, the dimwits who are largely responsible for the health of the country are still slipping up in such a big way.

And then there is the tracing and tracking, which I am led to believe is “gold standard” which is great because the guards who are out and about after their shift are certainly out and about. One guard's movements looked something like a mailman’s run at Christmas time.

They went everywhere. I cannot even think of the last time I went to a bank. This particular individual went to two different banks on the one day and then there are the two visits to Dan Murphy’s and one visit to the Thirsty Camel - all on the same day. Can’t these guys just settle for a reasonable priced bottle of chardonnay and some online banking at the end of their day?

The last word on the subject is “airflow”. It seems a no-brainer that you are more likely to catch or spread a bug in a hotel with little or low airflow. The bug doesn’t seem to live long out in the sun, so maybe give some of these poor iso-bunnies a balcony with air and sunshine.

It’s like if you have ever walked into a teenager’s room after they have a sleep-in.

The fart-imbued air knocks you off your feet and I imagine it is the same with this bug.

Open up an airless room with a family of four hunkered down together and you will get a sudden release of the bug and I imagine probably get the fart cloud on top.

I am not a scientist, despite all I espouse, however I am a thinking human, and when the WHO declared masks were a no-goer, I was running around the supermarket with an N95 strapped to my nozzle.

I figured the WHO was simply trying to conserve PPE gear. In the same fashion that these iso-bunnies are thrown into an airless cell of a hotel, it is just a matter of bureaucratism catching up with science.

Debra Byrne & Dion Hirini at Kyneton

EBRA Byrne and Dion Hirini will perform at the Bluestone Theatre at Kyneton on Saturday, February 27 as part of their Victorian tour.

It is an opportunity to experience one of Australia’s great balladeers with one of Melbourne’s finest musicians, performing a selection of songs that have both beauty and soul.

Debra has had an amazing career as the leading lady of stage, television and film and Dion is well-known for playing with Vika and Linda Bull as well as many other leading Australian singers and musicians.

Describing the two-hour show Debra said: “Our repertoire covers many genres all with our take, our style. I’ve played with Dion for 20-something years. We have developed our way, our sound. Dion is a master at feel and finding new arrangements without losing the original essence of a song.

“Dion is a wonderfully gifted singer, musician and a person I enjoy being with on and off the stage. We like to tell a story through song, and I love to bring my theatrical experience to each moment. We perform the songs we adore, not all of the same genre, but mindful that we keep a flow that complements each song.”

In this touring season of shows audiences will be given a rare treat with Debra singing I Dreamed a Dream, from the musical Les Misérables.

“For the past few years I chose not to sing I Dreamed a Dream, as I felt I was not able to give the song the authenticity it deserved. When I played the role of Fantine in Les Misérables, I was young and vulnerable and understood the character well. As a mature woman I couldn’t feel it and felt I was faking it, which was very uncomfortable and I knew that if not all, some would see through me.

“Recently Dion and I talked about the song and I found a way, at 64 years of age to give it the truth and give me the pleasure of the song. I am looking forward to singing I Dreamed a Dream again.”

Jazz and open mics

HE Castlemaine Jazz Jam, on the first Sunday of the month, is held at the Maurocco Bar in the Midland Hotel opposite the Castlemaine Railway Station.

Organiser John Hannah said jazz musicians come from Ballarat, Bendigo, Melbourne and all points in between. The event starts up again on March 7 from 2pm to 5pm.

Meanwhile, the Three Chord Club is on the third Sunday of the month at the Guildford Family Hotel. It's an open mic for folk, blues and country musicians. The next event is Sunday, February 21 from 1pm to 3pm.
