PRODUCT SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL RISK Ensuring chemical regulatory compliance worldwide

STANDARD TRAINING COURSES

PRODUCT SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL RISK THE ACADEMY by DHI provides training courses in topics related to chemicals regulation worldwide, in particular REACH, GHS, CLP and the EU Biocidal Products Regulation. We also provide training courses in the impact that chemicals have on humans and the environment such as toxicological risk assessment, ecotoxicology and food regulation. Keeping track of ever changing requirements in chemicals regulation is a daunting task. At the same time, health and environmental impacts of consumer products have become a visible part of the public agenda. This enhances the awareness of the safe use of chemical substances at the work place, in production processes and during the final use of the product.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

INTRODUCTION TO GHS Chemical user course

This one-day course will give you an overall introduction to GHS. Upon completion of the course you will be able to determine your role and obligations under GHS. Furthermore, the course will provide you with tools for chemicals management. Chemicals, through production, handling, transport and use, pose a potential hazard to human health and the environment. The Globally Harmonized System on classification and labelling of chemicals (GHS) was developed with the aim to enhance protection of human health and the environment through standardised criteria for classification and hazard communication. The GHS regulations pose a complex challenge for companies producing or marketing chemical substances and mixtures, as well as the users of such chemicals. Meeting national and international legal requirements and optimising documentation involve a major effort, especially as the system develops continuously while striving for harmonisation. COURSE TOPICS 

The GHS background

The scope of GHS

Roles and obligations

Classification criteria

Hazard communication through labels and Safety Data Sheets

GHS globally

GHS management

HOW TO PREDICT SUBSTANCE DATA WITHOUT TESTING Introduction to the OECD QSAR Toolbox

More and more emphasis is put on the prediction of (eco-)toxicological properties of chemicals from non-testing methods, such as QSAR modelling, to minimise costly testing. The aim of this one-day course is to make you familiar with the OECD QSAR Toolbox in order to predict missing data cheaper and faster. The OECD QSAR Toolbox has been developed within the OECD chemical programme in collaboration with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) to support industry and minimise unnecessary testing. During the course we will use the most recently released version of the Toolbox. After the course you may be able to use the Toolbox to perform the below tasks: 

To group chemicals into categories (when physiochemical, human health, ecotoxicological and/or environmental fate properties or their mode of actions are similar).

To fill (eco-)toxicological data gaps based on read-across or trend analysis.

To search for published experimental results in approx. 40 databases.

To find out if a target chemical substance is included in national regulatory inventories. To evaluate the toxicity of pharmaceutical impurities or of chemicals in medical devices.

COURSE TOPICS 

Basic theory of QSAR

Explaining the steps of the OECD QSAR Toolbox workflow

How to search for data on a chemical in the OECD QSAR Toolbox databases

How to predict e.g. skin sensitisation and AMES mutagenicity potential of a chemical

How to use the OECD QSAR Toolbox for REACH registrations

FOOD ALLERGENS Risk management in the food industry

At this one-day-course you will learn how to control allergens in a food production. Furthermore, you will learn how to incorporate risk assessment in overall risk analysis. Consumers can be allergic to an infinite number of ingredients. However, some allergens cause allergic reactions more frequently. As a result, labelling is required on food containing certain allergens. This includes food containing milk, wheat, egg, shellfish, fish, celery or mustard. It is vital that the labelling is correct as incorrect labelling may be fatal to allergy sufferers. For a food production comprehensive measures are required to keep track of allergens in production and packaging and on the labelling. We will guide you through the process - from identification of allergens to making the necessary provisions and fulfilling labelling requirements. COURSE TOPICS 

Clarification of food allergy and types of allergens

Why is it so difficult to determine a threshold limit value?

Risk analysis of food production with regard to allergens

Critical elements: staff, suppliers, raw material, equipment, processing, consumer information, product development and documentation

What is required to obtain an exemption from labelling requirements?

The course is a mix of lectures and exercises, which are solved in groups.

At the course you will get a folder with current regulations and guidelines.
