Climate action - a major focus of the certification process With the DGNB system, your path to carbon neutrality will be customised to your building. During certification, a project-specific Climate Action Roadmap will help you to achieve your goals. Based on an initial status quo analysis, the responsibilities and measures will be defined and put in chronological order.

Environmental quality Climate action and energy A continuous improvement process paves the way towards carbon neutrality.. Water This criterion analyses the water cycle inorder to reduce water consumption to aproject-specific target value. Materials and recycling The aim is to increase the share of recycled materials and reduce waste.
Socio-cultural and functional quality Indoor comfort The aim of this criterion is suitable temperature and humidity.
Economic quality Operating costs The financial structure of operating costs is analysed.
User satisfaction This criterion promotes the well-being of building users.
Risk management and long-term asset value Risk management and long-term asset value promote value retention and an increase in value of your real-estate.
Mobility This system promotes a sustainable and climate-friendly mobility infrastructure at the site.
Procurement and operations The aim of this criterion is to reduce hazardous materials in procurement and operate the building sustainably.

How is the certification process organised? YOUR BUILDING CAN BE CERTIFIED IF IT HAS BEEN IN USE FOR AT LEAST ONE YEAR.
The client commissions an auditor to take on the documentation process. The project is registered with the DGNB. The building is evaluated according to the criteria of the DGNB system. Documents are submitted to DGNB for conformity assessment, and DGNB evaluates these as an independent third party. The project receives an initial certificate which is valid for three years. The project can be re-certified annually by monitoring consumption. The certificate is valid for a further three years. Proof of improved performance can lead to a higher award level.

How can portfolios be certified? AN AWARD CAN BE ACHIEVED THROUGH INDIVIDUAL OR PORTFOLIO CERTIFICATION.
Individual certification: An individual certification considers each building separately. All DGNB criteria are applied and evaluated. As a result an individual award is assigned per building.

Portfolio certification: Certifying a portfolio with the DGNB is a 3-step process: Step 1: An initial certificate is issued based on a small number of pilot projects evaluating overlapping aspects, for subsequent projects only object-specific aspects are evaluated. Step 2: Define object-specific criteria for subsequent projects, which need verification. Step 3: Document and submit object-specific criteria for conformity assessment. Each submitted project receives a certificate.
DGNB - independent and neutral DGNB services are based on the results of voluntary panel work of the DGNB Association. As an independent, non-profit organisation, DGNB, has more than 1,200 member organisations which represent the entire value chain of the building and real-estate industry. Together we support the objective of enhancing and establishing the principles of independence, state-of-the-art thinking and continuous quality assurance. The DGNB Certificate for New Construction and Buildings in Use for sustainable buildings and districts combines the latest knowledge from all disciplines in the building sector and is being continuously advanced.
