An essay by Wandie Mesatywa with Sue Segar from the second issue of the Human Factor publication.
Writing for DGMT's newly-released publication, the Human Factor, photographer Wandie Mesatywa from the Eastern Cape shares her deeply personal story of overcoming the death of her mother as a teen and working as a cashier to support her to younger sisters, to discovering and pursuing her passion for photography. Through her essay, she explores how she came to develop such resilience, reflecting on the 'ordinary magic' she was exposed to as a child.
As part of the Human Factor's focus on the critical role parents have in their children's development and education, we hope that through Wandie's story, others will be made aware of Ann Masten's concept of 'ordinary magic' - the idea that the everyday support and interactions with able and caring adults that most of us take for granted, is truly life-changing for children.
