Christmas Message from the District Grand Master Christmas is nearly on us, and I can’t say where the last year has gone. They do say that ‘time fly’s when you are having fun’.

It has been another exciting Masonic year with a number of highlights, the most memorable of which would have to be the very successful November Communication weekend in Hamilton, hosted by the Alexandra Lodge, in conjunction with the sesquicentennial celebrations of that Lodge.

My sincere personal thanks go to the members of this Lodge for making the weekend so enjoyable for all who attended, with particular thanks to W Bro Roger Johnstone for his organisation and to Mrs Sue Roberson who made such a wonderful job of preparing the food for the Friday meet and greet as well as the lunch on the Saturday.

Saturday night’s formal dinner at the Verandah Function Centre by Hamilton Lake was the icing on the cake and completed the weekend on a high note, that was greatly appreciated by all who attended.

This is also a time to look forward to 2017, a year that is very important to Freemasonry in general and English Freemasonry in particular, being the celebration of 300 years since the formation of the Premier Grand Lodge in London on the 24th of June 1717.

Many of our Lodges have planned, or are planning, local events throughout the year of which you will be receiving information in due course.

The District Grand Lodge has two major events for 2017 with the first being the Grand Ball to be held at the Langham Hotel on Saturday 20th May 2017, the same day as our May Communication, to enable all Brethren from throughout the North Island to attend without having to travel to Auckland twice. Details of this ball have been forwarded to all Lodge secretaries who, I know, will have communicated this to their members. Tickets are on sale now and are selling fast so don’t delay.

The culmination of the year’s celebrations will be in conjunction with the annual Communication to be held next year in Rotorua over the weekend of 17th to 19th November 2017. A very comprehensive programme for this weekend has been arranged, and my thanks to W Bro Tony Mansfield for his considerable work in putting this together. It is hoped that a Ruler from Grand Lodge will travel to New Zealand to be with us during this important occasion and we should have confirmation (or otherwise) of this within a couple of weeks.

Invitations to attend will be sent to all the Sister Constitutions here in New Zealand as well as to the nearby English Districts and Lodges overseas. Full details will be with Lodge secretaries in the near future.

On behalf of Desré and myself I wish you and your families, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. Look after yourselves and we will see you fresh and raring to go again in 2017.

North Island English Masonic District Charitable Trust Application Process for Grants Applications for Grants from the Trust should, in the first instance, be directed by Lodge Almoners to the District Grand

Almoner’s Corner Brethren, the Almoner’s work is often a little easier as the weather warms. And hopefully the blasts of unusual and wild weather have finished with warmer spring conditions now. We trust that our elder brethren and lodge widows and families, were comfortable, and assisted by their almoners, through a winter which was quite cold and wild at times. We trust our Wellington brethren are supported and assisted, as needed, and the shaking stops soon. I know our southern almoners are very proactive at this time….

No doubt lodge almoners will be starting to think about a nearing Christmas time, in a month, and how their lodge assists any of their members who find themselves in distress, and of course, also their older folk. I know that some lodges are very generous to their own in early December, and often there is at least a personal card delivered by the almoner, and perhaps chocolates, or a nice hanky, or even small Christmas cakes! I also realise that many lodges arrange a special Widow’s and Senior’s Lunch nearer Christmas, to express to those eligible how valued and loved they are by their lodge. Some lodges even take them away on a day bus trip to parts unknown!

The Secretary will then circulate the completed form to the District Almoner’s Committee for a recommendation.

The District Grand Almoner, or his representative will then submit the recommendation to the Secretary who will onforward by email to Trustees for a prompt decision which the Secretary will then relay back to the originating Lodge and District Grand Almoner.

Richard Hall - Astronomer Takes his Third Step Bro Richard Hall, one of New Zealand’s leading astronomers, and recognised as a gifted communicator, became a Master Mason at Wellington Lodge’s November meeting.

Richard has been an astronomer at the Carter Observatory in Wellington, but more recently has been a driving force in The Phoenix Astronomical Society, the second largest in New Zealand.

He hosted a popular radio programme “Summer Stars”, which brought the world of astronomy to a wider audience. He has been a member of the Astronomy Standing Committee of the Royal Society of New Zealand and one of the prime movers in the establishment of Stonehenge Aotearoa near Carterton in the Wairarapa.

He is the co-author of Work Of The Gods: A Study Of Maori Astronomy, How To Gaze At The Southern Stars and Stonehenge Aotearoa: The Complete Guide.

With W Bro Peter Dieckermann, he travels from the Wairarapa for each Wellington Lodge meeting.

Freemasons of Auckland Kidz First Charity Group

The Kidz First Charity Group was started around eight years ago by a group of Freemasons who realised that, while Starship Hospital was well known and received lots of support for the work they do with children from around New Zealand, the Kidz First Hospital at Middlemore is also a significant children’s hospital, providing services to all of Counties Manukau, as well as being the national centre for the treatment of burns, and is yet relatively unsupported.

The group of Freemasons started by decorating the foyer of the hospital for Christmas, on the basis that being in hospital at Christmas is pretty tough for anyone, but is particularly tough on children. What started out as a small group decorating the foyer has grown to involve all four constitutions who decorate many of the children’s areas for Kidz First including: Page 3

Tessellated Tales • Main foyer • Children’s Emergency Department • Multi agency centre in Manukau • Whirinaki mental health unit in East Tamaki • Community centre in Clendon • Outpatients Clinic at the Superclinic in Manukau In addition, the group sponsor a small Christmas party in early December for the children who are inpatients – that party involves face painting, music, entertainment and, of course, food.

A Very Busy Masonic Year During a very busy first twelve months of office, for a couple of sea fairing brothers, saw them invited by members of the NZ Constitution to visit Calliope Lodge No 252 which meets in the Masonic Rooms Vaivase Apia, Western Samoa.

The occasion being the annual installation ceremony which took place on Thursday the 25th of August 2016, where Master Elect Bro Jacob Frederick Paul was installed as Worshipful Master by VW Bro Barry Rushton DGM North Shore Auckland, who had Samoa under his jurisdiction.

It all started when VW Bro Peter Goodwin PDGM, another seafarer and DC for the installation lined up two of us to support the NZ lodge in Samoa.

A couple of meetings on Peter’s fine vessel at Auckland’s Outboard Boating Club on Saturday mornings, earlier this year, saw the program for Samoa prepared with a couple of differences being two English mason’s playing a part in the Installation.

Wednesday August the 24th saw the remaining members of the team leave on Air New Zealand for Samoa with the exception of Barry Rushton, who arrived the morning of the Installation. The Master Elect’s brother picked us up from the airport and drove us to the Aggie Greys Hotel in Apia. The hotel has had a total upgrade following the extensive damage caused most recent big cyclone.

After a good night’s sleep for most of the team, breakfast was had around the pool.

Charter for Lodge Calliope No 252 NZC Unfortunately Graeme and Robin Martin’s luggage did not arrive with us in Samoa, so this was an anxious time for them, especially Graeme, who did not have his regalia. Many promises fell through.

Despite the luggage arriving on the next flight, island transport did not perform well.

The ladies were left to their own devices during the morning while the men went to the Lodge Rooms, known as the ‘chicken shed’. Because of the climate there are no windows just chicken wire around the top of the walls. Construction is a timber framed structure and horizontal boards with no internal lining, but is has it’s character, which did not detract from the occasion. A full rehearsal was conducted in preparation for the evening’s installation.

The Installation took place with the normal reception of guests and W Bro Martin (in borrowed regalia, as his luggage had still not arrived.) and W Bro Chopping were received by the Installing Master.

VW Bro Peter Goodwin conducted W Bro Martin to the Junior Wardens Chair. VW Bro Rushton was received and assumed the chair to install the Master Elect.

Due to the recent illness of the secretary, W Bro Chopping read the ancient charges to the Master Elect. During the board of installed Masters the Master Masons went for a walk in the large garden that surrounds the Lodge Rooms. Following the Board the MM were re admitted and the usual explanation of the working tools in each degree were presented by past masters of the Lodge.

The newly installed Master, W Bro Paul was addressed by W Bro Chopping, who delivered the English version of the address.

Following the closure of the lodge the brethren attended a refectory on the lawn outside the Lodge Rooms which consisted of pizzas and refreshments.

The following evening we went to a local restaurant with the ladies and had a formal refectory and some speeches.

On the Saturday we were taken for a tour of the island, including a swim in a fresh water swimming hole which disappeared into a large cave. We visited the beaches on the Northern side of the island and saw the damage caused by the tidal wave and the escape routes to higher ground that have been constructed since the cyclone.

We trust the Lodge is successful in obtaining a new Lodge Room in the city in the near future.

After being looked after by our hosts and treated to a traditional buffet lunch we were driven to the Airport for our return flight home.

North Island English Masonic District Charitable Trust For the information of the members, total funds on hand and invested as at the 30th of June 2016 were $1.67 million. For the first six months of the year we have seen a satisfactory level of income, but there still remains a strong need to develop the trust’s capital so that we can ensure that we can support our Brethren, Widows and their Families well into the future.

As we are subject to the vagaries of the Investment Market, and whilst we have seen growth over the last few years, that may not always be the case. The best way to preserve the Trust’s ability to help the needy is to grow the capital of the Trust, and the Trustees are focusing their attention on this matter, whilst remaining vigilant about supporting those that need assistance in the here and now.

The Trust and its operation: Thank you to all members of the District for the careful consideration and debate resulting in the re-structuring of your Trust - concluded last year. It is appropriate to summarise how the Trust now operates. The main components are: 1. Primary Trust. 5 Trustees are appointed at the pleasure of the District Grand Master, who is the ‘Protector’ of the Trust. Trustees have responsibility for the overall Governance of the Trust and the present Trustees are: Bryan Coyte, Tony Cross, Murray Macdonald as Chairman (appointed by DGM), Bob McKillop and Bryce Smith. The trustees have already met four times this year.

2. Charity Stewards Committee. Members are appointed by the DGM, and it is chaired by the District Grand Charity Steward, Euan Allan. The Trustee’s ‘person of contact’ is Tony Cross. This committee has the responsibility to stimulate the Lodges in the District and to raise funds for the Trust. Committee members are Euan Allan (Prince of Wales Lodge), Steve Elliott (Aorangi Lodge), Ben Grogan (Remuera Lodge), Ramon Jarrett (United Manawatu Lodge) and Wayne Mayday (Zealandia Lodge).

3. Almoner’s Committee. Members are appointed by DGM and it is chaired by the District Grand Almoner Ron Agnew. The Trustee’s ‘person of contact’ is Bryan Coyte. This committee assumes responsibility to co-ordinate the work of the Lodge Almoners in providing financial assistance to the brethren of the District and their dependents, by application to the Trust for Grants. Committee members are Ron Agnew (Corinthian Lodge), Neal Kirk (Tongariro Lodge), Richard Prothero (Wellington Lodge), Warren Weir (Eden Lodge) and Ray Wilson (Opotiki Lodge).

4. Trust Secretary/Treasurer is an officer of the Trust and is appointed by the Trustees. The present Secretary/Treasurer is Bruce McMurtrie, and the firm of Chartered Accountants used by the Trust is Belton Smith & Associates Limited, Chartered Accountants, Wanganui.

5. Trust Auditor can be neither a Trustee nor an officer of the Trust, and is appointed by the members of the Trust at the Annual General meeting held in May. The present Auditor is Barry Rogers.

The 5 Trustees have a purely a Governance role to fulfil. The Charity Stewards Committee and the Almoners Committee have the Functional Roles to raise funds for the Charity and to co-ordinate the identification of need and applications to the Trust for assistance.

Tessellated Tales As a District, and as members of the Trust (of which we all are), there is a serious need for all of us to concentrate on the ‘functional’ side of running the Trust and to fully support our Charity Steward’s and Almoner’s committees. It is paramount to increase the Capital value of the funds on hand to ensure our members and families in need can be looked after as and when that need arises. For the latter to be achieved with efficiency, the former needs to be effectively attended to, and until this happens, Trustees will continue with a tight rein on the purse strings as a means of preserving and hopefully increasing the Capital.

Tertiary Educational Grants: Trustees are proud to have introduced the Tertiary Educational Grants scheme and hope that in due time more of our members will avail themselves of the opportunity to gain at least some financial relief from the costs involved in obtaining higher tertiary level qualifications. The present scheme will be reviewed by Trustees next year, as for the present, availability is restricted to active members of our District only.

Masonic Time Capsule

Having been born and lived the first 17 years of my life in a small town near Boston, Massachusetts, I noticed with interest a recent news story that could be of some interest to those who are a little familiar with early American history.

On the morning of 11 December 2014, a work crew performing structural maintenance removed the cornerstone from the Massachusetts State House on Beacon Hill, in Boston, the city which practically invented American history. It is said to be the oldest time capsule in the United States of America.

Placed there in 1795 when ground was initially broken for the building, the time capsule, the size of a cigar box, was sent to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts where conservators x-rayed it to determine what lay inside. It was later found that it was initially brought to light on a previous occasion in 1855 during emergency repairs to the building, which houses the State Legislature and Governor’s offices, and it was replaced when the cornerstone was reset back then. It was opened for the first time since 1855 on the 6th of January 2015, therefore being the second time the time capsule has seen the light of day. The State House is a prominent landmark in Boston, overlooking Boston Common with its gold-leaf gilded dome roof.

In 1795 Governor Samuel Adams requested that the then Grand Master, Paul Revere, perform the ancient Masonic cornerstone ceremony.

Governor Adams requested that the Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts assist with the laying of the cornerstone, and Page 9

saw to it that “the ceremony was performed in due form… with the usual rites of ancient Masonry.”

On the 4th of July that year Governor Adams, Grand Master Revere, and Right Worshipful Master William Scollay laid the cornerstone after “the Grand Master had deposited under it a number of gold, silver, and copper coins, and a silver plaque bearing an inscription” describing the event.

Later, on the 7th of August 1855, while workmen were making repairs to the foundation of the State House, they “were surprised by the appearance of a few copper coins and a small leaden box… put together without the usual solder generally used by workers in that metal. This accidental discovery of the original cornerstone resulted in having the same plaque and coins replaced without any special display under a new stone” in the same location.

So what is a Masonic cornerstone ceremony? What’s the significance?

The origins of the custom are “lost in the mists of antiquity,” as Massachusetts Grand Master Melvin M Johnson said in 1915. The ceremony, however, dates back to as early as 1791 in the United States when Dr Elisha Cullen Dick, Master of Alexandria Lodge No 22 (George Washington’s successor as Master of that Lodge) laid “the so-called cornerstone of the District of Columbia” as Johnson referred to it.

In 1793 George Washington laid the cornerstone of the United States Capitol building acting as Grand Master pro tempore of the Grand Lodge of Maryland. In 1795, the event described here was carried out

by Paul Revere, Grand Master of

Massachusetts.

In total, the Grand Lodge laid 75 cornerstones between 1795 and 1915 in Massachusetts. In addition to the State House, the Grand Lodge was notably involved in ceremonies for Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Worcester Town Hall, the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown, and the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown. The most recent cornerstone ceremony was held at the Needham Town Hall in November, 2011, a ceremony commemorating Grand Lodge’s involvement in the original cornerstone-laying of that Town Hall in 1902.

The 5 kilo box uncovered in December, 2014 measures 14 × 19 × 4 cm and contains a collection of silver and copper coins dating from 1652 and 1855, an engraved silver plaque of Masonic significance (both Adams and Revere and many other colonists being Freemasons), a copper medal depicting George Washington (a Freemason and first President of the United States of America), the official seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, cards, a title page from the Massachusetts Colony Records, and a newspaper of the day.

A record of the 1855 reburial confirms the contents when the time capsule was discovered then due to emergency structural issues that then uncovered it for the first time since burial.

The time capsule.

What could be contained in the oldest American time capsule, dating back to the beginning of the United States, and unearthed in Boston?

The container was created by American Revolutionary War hero Paul Revere, a silversmith and renowned statesman and then Governor Samuel Adams, and was put into the ground in 1795. The contents of the capsule have now been revealed after 220 years.

In the interests of care, nearly five hours were required to loosen screws before the top could be lifted, and it then took a further hour to empty all of the capsule’s items. A porcupine quill and a dental tool were used to take out the items with the greatest care.

Silver and Copper Coins

So, Revolutionary War (as the War with the Colonies is referred to there) heroes Sam Adams and Paul Revere, patriots in American textbooks and Bostonlore, laid the capsule within the cornerstone of the State House in 1795 to commemorate the building, the city, and the imminent 20th anniversary of American independence. In December, 2014 workers fixing a water leak at the building discovered the box along with five embedded coins, a goodluck custom.

Ceremonial cornerstones, often associated with rituals of Freemasonry, were common in early American history. In 1793, George Washington himself conducted just such a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, and it remains as yet unfound, its contents a mystery. The cornerstone deposited in Boston was likewise laid as part of a Grand Masonic ceremony, on 4 July 1795.

At that time, Paul Revere was Grand Master of the state’s Freemason fraternity. On the day of laying the cornerstone, the participants processed from the old State House to the location where the new one would be built. Fifteen white horses drew the stone to its new home, representing each of the states in the Union at the time. Revere then delivered a speech congratulating those gathered on having been part of the establishment of a country where liberty and laws would prevail. “May we my Brethren, so Square our Actions thro life as to shew to the World of Mankind, that we mean to live within the Compass of Good Citizens that we wish to Stand upon a Level with them that when we part we may be admitted into that Temple where Reigns Silence & peace,” he said.
