“There’s something about the vegetation, too, that I respond to instinctively—the stunning bougainvillea, the flamboyants and jacarandas, the orchids growing from the trunks of the mysterious ceiba trees. And I love Havana, its noise and decay and painted ladyness. I could happily sit on one of those wrought-iron balconies for days, or keep my grandmother company on her porch, with its ringside view of the sea.”

envisions depictions of Cuba as catalysts for intricate, interwoven dialogues about history and culture. Specifically, the exhibition examines complex relationships between nineteenth-century paintings and work produced in the last twenty years by US and Cuban artists as tools to further examine the relationship between the United States and Cuba.1 Across the exhibition and within this companion publication, the term “landscape” is used in its broadest sense—denoting seascapes and the built environment as well as images of the countryside— and there is considerable reference to the Spanish-Cuban-

—DF: Juana, creo que realmente vale la pena subrayar lo que estás diciendo aquí, es decir, las diversas maneras en que se trae al espectador a esta experiencia visual a través tanto de la vigilancia como de la inmersión; tanto como actor en primera persona o como narrador omnisciente. Este posicionamiento se remonta a tu punto anterior sobre obligar al espectador “a situarse en la experiencia y a cuestionar su sentido de ser expulsado o de ser privilegiado”. A la vez des-familiariza la experiencia visual al tiempo que la hace íntimamente familiar.

—JV: Sí, el punto de vista es central para mi trabajo. Por ejemplo, en un trabajo anterior, Una visión inherente del mundo, utensilios para el hogar y souvenirs crean un horizonte a la altura de los ojos sobre una mesa de dieciséis pies de altura. La altura y estrechez de la mesa colocan al espectador en la perspectiva de un agrimensor. Uno puede determinar rápidamente el diseño y los límites de los objetos, su relación

is brought into this viewing experience through both surveillance and submersion; as both first-person actor and omniscient narrator. This positioning goes back to your earlier point about compelling the viewer “to situate themselves in the experience and question their sense of displacement or privilege.” It defamiliarizes the viewing experience while at the same time making it intimately familiar.

—JV: Yes, point of view is central to my work. For example, in an earlier work, An Inherent View of the World,

housewares and souvenirs create a skyline at eye level on top of a sixteen-foot table. The height and narrowness of the table place the viewer in the perspective of a land surveyor. The layout and boundaries of the objects, their relationship and placement, their history, and assumed value can be quickly determined. The viewer is able to look at the objects up close, and intimately, appreciating their ornate details and craftsmanship, before the gaze shifts back to their topographical arrangement on the table. One’s eyes travel across the table, moving as if looking at a skyline of buildings and mapping the empty spaces and proximity of each object as if they were streets and passageways. The overall piece forms a cartography of meaning that offers a reading of unspoken histories. One cannot enter or occupy this space. It is meant to be examined, inspected, and deciphered from a distance.

—DF: Juana, if we might conclude with the stunning photographic images juxtaposed with your film stills from Rest Ashore. The effect of the repetitive blue waves of the sea and the orange hues of sky leaves viewers uncertain if we are seeing impending apocalypse or radiant sunset.

—JV: With the video Eternal Sunshine, I turn to “walking into the sunset,” one of Hollywood’s best-known tropes rehearsed as a metaphor for the possibilities of happiness.

In my rendering, there is no silhouette against the orange sky; instead, the sun never sets. It is eternal or in the process of always becoming and therefore questions whether the happiness that is being desired is achievable or tangible at all.

—DF: Yes, this sense of the processual reminds us that the installation’s title, Rest Ashore, is both a statement and a question. Thank you, Juana, for translating these weighted histories into beautiful and provocative art.

—JV: Del video Eterno Resplandor del Sol recurro a “Sueños de un paisaje extranjero”, uno de los tropos más conocidos de Hollywood propuesto como metáfora de las posibilidades de la felicidad. En mi representación, no hay silueta contra el cielo anaranjado; en cambio, el sol nunca se pone. Es eterno o se encuentra en proceso de serlo y, por lo tanto, cuestiona si la felicidad que se desea es alcanzable o tangible de alguna manera.

—DF: Sí, este sentido de lo procesal nos recuerda que el título de la instalación, Aescansar en la arena, es tanto una afirmación como una pregunta. Gracias, Juana, por traducir estas historias tan importantes en arte hermoso y provocador.
