THE FOUNDATION OF POSSIBILITY

Appalachian Ohio is abundant in leadership and possibilities, but a steep philanthropy gap has long stood as a barrier to success. Since 1999, the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO) has worked to reduce philanthropic disparity between Appalachian Ohio and other parts of the state.

FAO provides a structure through which charitable giving is turned into meaningful investment in the people and programs that catalyze sustained transformation. Our approach to change starts with inspiring donors to multiply their impact by investing in local solutions, supporting transformative leaders, and advancing approaches that are collaborative, holistic, evidence-based, and sustainable.

Today, FAO stewards nearly $100 million in charitable assets and 600 separate charitable funds established by donors seeking to create opportunity in Appalachian Ohio. We also serve as the back-office partner to the region-wide African American Community Fund and 14 geographic affiliates that collaborate through FAO to accelerate local change and grow philanthropic resources for their communities.

Together, we advance lasting change across five areas that increase quality of life, known as our Pillars of Prosperity. Our investments improve health, create educational opportunities, advance economic development and environmental stewardship, and provide access to arts and cultural experiences.
