NUNUNG WS & INDONESIAN TENUN

NUNUNG WS'S intensity in Indonesian tenun (weaving) was initially motivated by her desire to create new colors for her paintings in the mid-1990s. The traditional weaving dyeing process produces color compounds that are very attractive to her, yielding organic and rooted colors. After intensely experimenting with various colors, Nunung finally found what she was looking for. Following this, Nunung's interest extended beyond the color of the thread produced by a specific dyeing process. She became intrigued by how the intertwining of threads on a piece of

woven fabric could result in interesting nuances of color. Nunung discovered that the color composition in weaving not only produces compounds that enhance the color but also retains the characteristics of the original color. She applied this insight through experiments, attaching concrete objects such as transparent paper to reduce the colors in her paintings. Nunung's composition yields stirring nuances of abstraction. Nunung's dedication to Indonesian weaving goes beyond the quest for a new visual vocabulary as typical of modern artists. It also reflects Nunung's passion as a woman seeking the connection between spiritual experience and bodily knowledge in response to nature. This attachment is evident in the roles of women in traditional lives as carvers, weavers, embroiderers, and more, producing a wealth of knowledge about nurturing and preservation.

NUNUNG W.S. (ID, B. 1948) is an abstract artist with a career spanning over half a century. Despite receiving family pressure to study religion, her passion for the arts appeared at an early stage. In particular, she was inspired by Kartika Affandi, the artist daughter of Kusuma Affandi, who served as a role model that women too could succeed in art. Under the guidance of Nashar, Nunung transitioned from the dynamic expressionism of Kartika and her father to more reflective studies, juxtaposing planes of color that are both meditative and jewel-like. She is a masterful and subtle colorist, using luminous hues to create artwork that stimulates and mirrors the subconscious’s dreams and emotions. Their beauty and power quickly earned her acclaim, as well as national and international group and solo exhibitions. Nunung has been active in the Indonesian art scene and has held exhibitions since the 1970s, in Indonesia and overseas. She chose to pursue abstraction because she wants to invite her observers to not only enjoy her work visually but also to understand what goes on during the process of creating her masterpieces. ---

Cita Tenun Indonesia (CTI) is a nonprofit organization that envisions the preservation of Indonesia's traditional hand-woven fabrics (Tenun) as a valuable cultural heritage. This installation project marks a part of CTI's 15th-anniversary celebration. Since its establishment, CTI has been committed to sustainable concepts. With a mission to empower the local economy, CTI prioritizes the welfare of its supported artisans and aims to protect the surrounding environment. In 2016, CTI organized a significant event titled "Warna Alam" (English: "Natural Colours"). In this event, the coloring ingredients used for clothing textiles, fashion items, and home decoration materials were sourced exclusively from the trees found in the surrounding artisan's village.
